“Clarice” Liveblog: Episode 2

Again, some extremely unfashionably late hot takes.

(Special thanks to @kathrynethegreat and @special-agent-pendragon for encouraging another liveblog!)

Clarice is working out! And eating junk food! I love it.

and cleaning her gun!

hey, Ardelia is drinking what I’m going to assume is her grandmother’s “smart people tea”.

Krendler disciplining Clarice already is infuriating but appropriate.

“I lost control.” Oh no, I don’t like that. Don’t make Clarice unstable. Her mental and emotional state never had anything to do with her failing career.

getting weird mixed signals from Ardelia. Last week, she obviously didn’t want Clarice to lie/stick to the script Krendler gave her, but now she’s telling Clarice she messed up by not doing so...?

“I better know you if you’re calling this early.” Amen, Ardelia.

I’m in love: this cinematography is straight out of the film (when she’s flying to WV with Crawford)!

“When’s the last time you went back to Appalachia?” “It’s been years.” What??? It has NOT been years--Clarice was JUST in West Virginia last week as well as in Silence, and she arguably attended college there as well. (UVA is at least nestled in the mountains, and you don’t have to drive far outside the Albemarle Valley to hit Appalachia proper.) After all the details about her character they’ve been nailing, they miss this glaring error?

I like the tiny details she’s noticing (like the guy biting his nails). Not only because she’s an investigator, but because it’s reminiscent of Hannibal’s influence (imo).

Clarice Is Short: The Saga continues

still not getting any creepy vibes off Krendler. He’s going to be much less effective as an antagonist if he isn’t lewd as well as a dick.

I really don’t care for the way the opening “credits” fade out from the death’s-head moth to Clarice’s face. There are MANY animals that represent her, or parts of her, in the books--lions, lambs, horses, and of course birds--so this choice feels empty and lazy to me.

also lazy: having a fellow agent straight-up tell her in episode 2 “you shouldn’t be in the Bureau.” Maybe in two or three years, after some further “Death Angel”-type incidents, I could see this blatant rudeness, but not yet.

“Reesey”? Thanks, I hate it.

this flashback must be of Clarice’s little brother. That answers one question I had last week. That said...Clarice’s brother doesn’t play the same role in her story that Mischa does in Hannibal’s--but this sure feels like a Mischa-esque flashback.

good: they’re finally getting to the source of Clarice’s actual trauma!

bad: this is NOT how Clarice found out about her father. In fact, that whole incident is laid out in detail in the novels, and there’s nothing overly literary/un-cinematic about it, so this feels unnecessary. “The police are here! Something happened to Daddy!” No, bad! Show, don’t tell!

she would’ve known better than to introduce herself to that kid as “Clarice Starling, FBI,” come on now.

were they regularly able to wire tap hair clips in 1993?

actually, nothing in this show looks very 90s to me so far. I’m sad about it.

so in eighteen months, Ruth Martin has gone from a junior Senator to the Attorney freakin’ General, and now she might run for governor?? At least let her get settled in one position of power first, why don’t you!

yet more Buffalo Bill flashbacks...alas.

are they trying to make this guy another surrogate Hannibal character? He’s commenting on Clarice’s accent and the dryness of her skin, asking about who she “left behind”...it all feels very Hannibal. (I know he’s a Charismatic Cult Leader trope, too--but when played off of Clarice...)

“Ew.” “I hate this guy.” I laughed.

I understand that Clarice probably feels conflicted re: her siblings in the book, but I’m really not digging the flashbacks of this Tim Burton character her brother.

@ the writers: Clarice already has the lamb backstory/symbolism, too. We don’t need this Little Brother stuff.

*shrieking* Mrs. Starling! At the sink washing the blood out of his hat!!!

...aaand they had to ruin it with the brother’s painfully bad dialogue. Will still be good for gif-making, though.

are we supposed to interpret all these flashbacks as Clarice being incapable of controlling her emotions/state of mind? She keeps losing herself in memories and emerging all doe-eyed and panicky. I don’t like it.

not to be a broken record but...Clarice should be TOUGH. Again, Ardelia only saw her cry once in seven years. But she’s more worked up in this scene than Jodie was in Memphis!

when Mr. Cult Leader shouts “Agent Starling! Agent Starling!” he sounds exactly like Hannibal calling her back to his cell in the asylum. That has to be intentional.

damn, wish that I could look as good five minutes after I’ve been crying as Clarice does.

I LOVE that Ardelia gets to be the crucial behind-the-scenes book-smart partner to Clarice’s action heroine.

AG Martin’s just playing politics by turning a blind eye to the crooked sheriff. But when her own daughter was just kidnapped and almost killed, she looks like a real hypocrite.

gosh, Rebecca Breeds is great. I already hope she gets nominated for an Emmy.

so Krendler is...doing the right thing???

Clarice’s father was definitely not a sheriff. I hope she’s just exaggerating for dramatic effect. (Maybe this will be clarified later.)

she couldn’t just sit with a manipulative guy without getting emotional, but she’s cool as a cucumber while telling an extended story about her father? HmmMM.

sometimes her mannerisms and facial expressions are so much like Jodie’s that it’s uncanny, like here when she leans forward to confront the Cult Leader.

“She did it.” Damn straight!

another great callback to Silence. this show’s camera crew knows its stuff!

“He’s concerned I have some residual trauma from Bill.” I. Hate. This. Subplot--and all its OOC implications.

“Catherine was close to her father, too.” Ooh, a nice allusion to the novel! Clarice makes note of their “common wound,” the loss of a father, when she’s in Catherine’s apartment in Silence.

she is just SO pretty.

little Clarice looks a LOT like Rebecca Breeds. I hope we see some more of her.

The Good:

the continuing visual nods to the Silence film via cinematography

Mama Starling!!!

Clarice’s “The World Will Not Be This Way Within the Reach of my Arm” attitude, refusing to leave without helping the victims.

Ardelia Mapp coming in clutch!

Clarice being, generally, a badass

and using psychological tricks/mind games to pin the antagonist...that’s the woman who disarmed a monster with just a few words.

Rebecca Breed’s acting has been phenomenal so far.

I like Clarice’s haircut a lot better when worn down (though it’s not very practical for fieldwork, so we probably won’t see it much).

The Bad:

the continuing Buffalo Bill-related Trauma Subplot. Ugh.

all the flashbacks to Clarice’s brother (and the not-so-subtle suggestion that her brother is, symbolically, another lamb).

will the real Paul Krendler please come forward? this guy is so TAME.

the other agents’ hostility towards Clarice needs to be toned down slightly so that it can escalate. Otherwise, where’s the tension?

is this actually 1993? I’m not feeling it. Shouldn’t it have a little of that Season 1/2 X-Files aesthetic? Please give me more than once-an-episode references to pagers and fax machines!

that glaring Appalachia continuity error...it’s still bugging me.

I missed the overt Hannibal references, even though they’re not necessary to any part of this episode. A lady can dream!

Overall, I really liked this one despite my various issues with it. It started shakily but built to a great finish. The emphasis across both episodes on Clarice being in the FBI not just to “get out, get anywhere,” but out of a genuine desire to help victims has been wonderful. I just hope they don’t swerve too far into the “too traumatized and emotionally compromised to function” lane. It would be a disservice to Clarice’s character and to her journey (and would smack too much of “Hannibal really did prey on her weak mind/brainwash her”.

Things I’d still like to see: More of her personality. Her hobbies and interests. That she’s cleaning her gun is great! Now let’s see “Poison Oakley” practicing her sharpshooting skills. Or car shopping. Or clothes shopping to show off her “developing taste.” (Ardelia can come!) I’ll take literally anything. Give us more of Clarice’s sense of humor as well. She had some subtle funny moments in the pilot, and it’s nice to see Rebecca smile for a change.

And Krendler? Smear that man in grease! I appreciated a happy ending even though Clarice’s career is, as we know, already in a downward spiral--the last thing we want is for every episode to be a slog, especially when a good chunk of the audience hasn’t read the book and doesn’t know Clarice is doomed to fail in the Bureau.

However... Krendler’s not a “redemption arc” kind of character. Or even a “run-of-the-mill sexist asshole” character. This is a man who spent seven years systematically sabotaging a young woman’s career because a) he was jealous that she solved the Gumb case before him, and b) she wouldn’t fuck him. He was a Justice Department official working fist-in-glove with a serial child molester who was planning some of the heinous vigilante justice imaginable. THAT’S why his very gruesome end at Hannibal’s hands felt deserved--even Clarice thought so! In short, he needs to get nasty.

Anyway, thanks for coming to another long-overdue TedTalk. Fingers crossed that the next one will be more timely (aiming for Sunday night)!

Letters From the Past

Newtina Week Day 3: A journey through time. (Newt and Tina go to the past/future or someone from the past/future visits them.)

Now at just over 100 years of age, Newt and Tina receive a surprise. A long-forgotten letter from Queenie, years after her death at the hands of Grindelwald.

TW: Character death mentioned.

Newt climbed the ladder of his old, beaten case, a stack of yellowed correspondence in hand. He was nearly half-way through cleaning it out after decades of research. It was time to move on, pass the case onto the next generation. His son and grandson would be taking over his work soon, though Newt felt a bittersweet clench in his chest whenever he thought about it. He was proud that they had created something wonderful between them. He worked for over eighty years to make the world better for creatures, to educate other wizards about them. He had seen protective orders, ordinances, and treaties written in dozens of countries around the world to improve their living conditions. He was proud of the work he had done. His son had continued at his side and branched off into herbology and potion testing, trying to find alternative ingredients for common potions that would not harm creatures.

Now his grandson, Rolf, had expressed interest in taking on the family business. He was currently traveling, studying creatures, plants, and whatever he fancied at the moment. He called himself a Naturalist because he was fascinated by all things in nature and yearned for the discovery of new things. Newt saw a lot of himself in his grandson. It was when he wrote to let them know that he had met a wonderful girl who he would be bringing home to meet them soon, and that he thought she might be the one, that Tina said it might be time to pass on the case.

Newt knew she was right. There were few things that Tina wasn’t right about, come to think of it, but it was still difficult to think of his case being in the care of another, even if that person was Rolf.

Newt pushed himself up and over the lip of his case, recalling how he used to run up the rickety ladder and out with ease. How fit and young he had been at thirty, though he never realized it. Time had been kind to Newt and Tina, but their bodies were not what they used to be. Years of hard work, injuries, and physical labor had seen to that.

“What do you have there?” Tina asked as she stirred the soup on the stove with her wand, her keen eyes trailing down the page of an old, stained cookbook. She glanced up at her husband as he emerged into their kitchen and placed the pile of parchment onto the table. The light from the window over their large farmhouse sink made her still-dark hair shine. Gray streaked through the soft locks that were currently pulled back away from her face into a plait that hung loosely over her shoulder. Newt still found that there were moments when she would still take his breath away, even seventy-seven years after their first meeting. He was a lucky man.

“Letters mostly,” he replied, his fingers flipping through a few of the pages on the top of the file. “I haven’t seen them in years, most are from the thirties, I’d say.” He sat down with a small grunt and leaned on his elbow, sorting the papers into piles. Tina finished adding ingredients to their dinner and joined him at the table, picking up the top piece of parchment off the pile.

“Oh, Thes,” she said with a sad smile, tracing his name with her fingertip. Newt looked up and nodded, his eyes flashing back to the paper before him.

“I know. I think most of the people these letters are from are dead now. It’s…”

“It’s hard to get old,” Tina said, finishing his thought. Newt nodded, his eyes not leaving the parchment in front of him as he read. They had both lost so much over the years, so many people that they loved and cared about, but they had lived a good life together and he wouldn’t give up the family they had created to change anything in their past. It was still heartbreaking to think that neither of their siblings had lived to see their niece or nephew grow up, even though it had been more than half a century since they had been put to rest.

“Who is that one from?” Tina asked, pulling a faded, lavender envelope from the stack.

“Mr. Worme.” Newt flipped the letter over and read the few lines on the back before placing it gently onto a pile. “It was congratulating me on my seventh edition and updating me on its progress and publication.”

“Oh, goodness. That must have been in thirty-six? Thirty-seven??”

“Thirty-five,” Newt corrected her with a smile, pulling another envelope from the pile. “They all sort of run together. I can’t keep track of the dates myself.”

Tina flipped the unopened envelope in her hand over and she stilled, her eyes growing wide. Newt noticed her change of mood immediately.

“What is it, Love?” he asked. When she didn’t answer, he pulled the envelope from her fingers gently. He flipped it over to see the writing on the front. “Is that…?”

“Queenie.” Tina’s eyes were wide and tears were brimming in their chocolatey depths. Her sister had been a tough topic for years. Tina, though she knew that Queenie had made her own tough choices all those years ago, still carried guilt with her. She still blamed herself for driving her little sister into Grindelwald’s circle, and later, for not being able to save her when she tried to run from it. Her death stung, far more than watching Theseus fall in the final battle, far more than the peaceful death that Jacob had seen at the age of 90 a few years back. Hers had been the hardest by far.

Taking the envelope back, she stared at it for a few more moments. “It’s not opened...and it’s addressed to you.”

Newt shook his head, confused. “I don’t remember that one at all. I would have remembered if she had tried to contact me, it would have stood out. It happened so infrequently that…” Newt stood and walked around the table, lowering himself into the chair at his wife’s side. “Do you want to open it?”

“I- I think so,” Tina mumbled, her gathered tears breaking through her lashes and cascading down her cheek, “I...no. You open it. It’s addressed to you.”

“It’s for you, though. You know it is.” Newt’s hand rested lightly on her shoulder, his fingers passing lightly over her upper back in a practiced motion. “Do you want me to read it to you?”

With a sniff and a nod, Tina passed the letter over to Newt who opened the wax seal carefully and pulled out a letter on matching stationary. He watched as Tina pulled a handkerchief from her pocket and dabbed at her eyes before leaning on the table and watching out the window, listening. Unfolding the letter, Newt looked at the familiar handwriting with a pang of sadness and something akin to a long-held frustration and anger. He cleared his throat and began to read.

February 12, 1934

My dear Newt,

I know that you will be surprised to hear from me. You may not want to, and if that is the case, then I understand. I have done things that make me ashamed beyond explanation, and for that, I am truly sorry. I left Teenie, and I can never go back to the way things were. I did that, and I have regretted it ever since. I thought that what I was doing was right, but over time I have realized that Gellert was not truthful or forthcoming with his goals. Thank you for being the family for her that I could not be. Thank you for loving her the way that she deserves to be loved.

I heard the news of your first child in the Daily Prophet. Congratulations. I am so happy and proud of you both. You will be wonderful parents, she is a lucky little girl. I wish that I was able to meet her, but I fear that it might never happen now. Please give her a kiss from her Auntie Queenie with love.

I am leaving Nurmengard tomorrow. I know that there are several Aurors on watch and correspondence is being checked. I do not know if Tina’s correspondence is among those, they keep any information about Tina a secret from me, even now. I didn’t want to take a chance and have this letter be intercepted. I figured sending a letter by no-maj post to you would be safest.

Please, tell her how sorry I am. I made these choices and I take full blame for my actions. She has been my everything since we were children, and she will continue to be my everything until the day I die. Tell her that I love her. She deserves nothing but the best in life, and that is all I hope for her. Tell her that I would be by her side right now if I could do this all over again. I’m not sure if I will make it to England or not, that is where I am trying to go. If I do, I will be in contact again. If I do not, please forgive me for what I have done. Not only here with Gellert, but to you both. Especially to Tina. I know my sister, and I know that she has probably tried to take responsibility for what happened in Paris. Don’t let her live her life thinking that she was responsible, Newt. She wasn’t. It was my choice that led me here.

I hope that I can tell her these things in person soon. Please be watching for an owl from me in the coming weeks. If the worst should happen, I am sure that you will hear through the Ministry. I am running, not because I am scared, but because I know that Gellert Grindelwald is a manipulator and a liar. I cannot stand with him any longer. I know that I will face prison time when I arrive in England, but I will do what I can to help the resistance working against him.

I am sending love to you both, and I hope that you will allow me to see you soon. I will be in touch. Please also share these sentiments with Jacob as I have no address for him. I don’t know where he is and I will probably never see him again, but I only wish him happiness. I hope he can forgive me someday.

A pause followed Newt’s reading, interrupted only by Tina’s choked sobs as she clutched her handkerchief to her face. Newt stared at the letter in his hand, the other resting along Tina’s back and trying to soothe her with a light touch. He realized that he was also crying as tears began to blur the words before him. Clearing his throat, he removed his glasses and used his shirt sleeve to dab at his eyes.

Tina sighed and looked up at Newt, her eyes were red and tears still streamed down her face. He set the letter on the table and thumbed the tears away from her slightly-wrinkled face, cupping her cheek lightly as he had done thousands of times before. She leaned into the touch and then her face buried itself into his shoulder as her arms wrapped around his waist. She seemed to be calming now as she took deep, steadying breaths.

“She never made it,” Tina mumbled into Newt’s shoulder, her despair heavy in her voice. Newt closed his eyes and held her close.

“I know.” He shook his head as he laid the letter down and wrapped his other arm around Tina, surrounding her. She continued to cry into his shoulder, her sobs and hiccuping breaths growing farther apart as she calmed. She took deep breaths and Newt played with the wisps of hair that had escaped their confines at the nape of her neck. “I can’t believe you found that letter. I never knew it existed.”

“I know,” she responded, pulling away from him and wiping the remnants of her tears away with her handkerchief. “She sent it by muggle post, it probably got mixed in with the fan mail. The purple envelope saw to that.” They both laughed, softly and awkwardly in the solemn moment, as they thought back on the piles of fan mail that had arrived over the years from witches of all ages and walks of life. Thankfully, it had tapered off after a couple of decades and they were left in peace with only scholarly letters of interest scattered here and there.

“Thank Merlin I never get rid of anything…” Tina snorted and shook her head, dabbing at her eyes once more. She inhaled deeply through her nose and then released her breath through her mouth, her face downcast as she twisted the cloth in her hands absently. “How are you, Love?” Newt asked softly.

“I’m… okay,” Tina whispered without looking up. “Surprised, sad, angry… happy to hear from her… I don’t really know how I feel right now.”

Newt nodded, picking the letter up and looking at it again. “That’s completely understandable. It’s a lot to take in after so long. I wish we had seen it sooner.”

“I wish Jacob had seen it,” Tina continued, and Newt hummed in agreement.

“He forgave her long ago.”

“I know he did. He was so… good.” Tina said with a wistful smile, her eyes closing at the wash of memories. “He deserved closure too, though.”

“Do you feel that this was closure, then?” Newt asked carefully.

“I- kind of? Maybe a little.” Tina said, her voice hoarse after her burst of emotions. “I’m glad to have it. I’m… I’m glad that she ran for the right reasons. I wish, so much, that she would have made it to England. She could have been…”

“She would have been a part of our family again, even if she would have been in prison. She always was in a way.” Newt watched as Tina’s dark eyes rose to meet his, they were bloodshot, and tears still threatened to fall, but they were still as bright as they had ever been. “I always considered her family, even if she was never here.”

“I know you did. You never had to, but you did.” Tina leaned forward and hugged Newt properly. “Thank you.”

“I love you,” he whispered into her hair, and he felt her arms tighten around his back.

“I love you, too.”

Tina pulled away and used the heel of her hand to brush an escaped tear from her cheek. She lightly, gently grabbed the letter and envelope from the table. Folding the letter carefully, she slid it back into its home and tucked it carefully into the pocket of her long, woolen sweater.

“I’m going for a walk,” Tina said, standing slowly from her chair. “I need a bit of fresh air, I think.”

“Right,” Newt agreed. “Do you want company?” He knew the answer already, but he wanted to make sure she was okay after the shock she had just received.

“I don’t think so,” she said, a small forced smile crossing her face, “I think I need a bit of time alone to think.” Newt nodded and Tina bent down to place a light kiss on the top of his head. “Keep an eye on dinner for me?” she asked as she made her way to the door.

“Of course, I’ll take care of things here.” With a nod, Tina slipped through the door and began to walk up the path. Through the window, Newt watched as she paused to pull the lavender letter from her sweater pocket and pull the letter out. She continued walking toward the pasture, her eyes trained on her sister’s final words. He smiled at the sight, thankful that Queenie had been able to pay her sister one final visit with her words from the past, even if it had come years later than intended.

Thanks for the visit, Queenie, he thought, hoping that wherever she was now, that she was finally at peace.

The Haunting of Hill House Season 1 (2018) - Thoughts [SPOILERS]

I just finished watching season 1 of The Haunting of Hill House, and wow, I am impressed. I watched three episodes last night, and I watched the other seven episodes tonight. I finished at 7:23am. Was it worth the all nighter? Hell yes. Did I immediately come here to blog about it before getting any sleep and before a coffee? Again, Hell yes.

I will try to briefly sum up what the show is about: It’s some time in the 90s, Olivia and Hugh Craine buy a mansion and temporarily move into it with their five children with the intent of doing up the building and selling it for profit. Issues arise so they end up having to stay there a lot longer than planned. After a short while, lots of paranormal incidents happen and it seems like the Mum is going crazy. The family experience death amongst them - the mother kills herself in the home, and the rest of the family end up fleeing into the night. The movie jumps between two timelines so it can get quite confusing. The movie follows the lives of the children when they are grown up - two are married, one is a heroin addict, one owns a funeral home and one is a therapist. They all need to come to turns with the things that happen in their childhood. The youngest in the family, Nell, hallucinates all her life a ‘bent neck lady’ who she has been seeing since childhood. Nell ends up having a breakdown after the death of her husband and coming off her meds, so she returns to the house years later and kills herself there. Eventually, the entire family return to the house and learn both Nell and the mum didn’t kill themselves, the spirits in the house did. They all have vivid hallucinations and the youngest brother Luke almost dies in the house because the spirit of their Mum won’t let them leave. Finally she frees them and they leave in one piece. The dad dies - not sure why he had to die - and they’re free from the house and can move on with their lives. The show ends with three different things happening - the door to the ‘red room’ (a room they can’t get into where lots of paranormal activity happens, the red room is a reoccuring theme in the movie) shuts with the spirits of both Olivia and Hugh, and the spirit of Nell all embracing. It shows the other siblings doing well in life all together, and it shows the caretakers of the building returning in their old age to die there.

That is the absolute basics I can sum the plot in. I have missed SO much in that paragraph, there are so many different plots for all the characters in this show, I will be here all morning trying to type it out. If you’re reading this, I’m assuming you have seen it anyway so I don’t need to go into further detail. The plot was extremely complex, and I was captured right from the beginning.

I have a file of notes I took while watching this show. I am going to go through them, the order of them will seem crazy because it kept jumping between timelines, so bare with. I will try order them best I can.

To start off with - Nell.

Nell was one of the two ‘nutcase’ characters. She was on medication for mental health and was thought to be hallucinating. She also was told she suffered with sleep paralysis, she ended up marrying her sleep technologist - get it, girl. First, she saw a ‘bent neck lady’ often in her childhood and it really scared her. Then, her mum killed herself. Then, she got removed from her home and her parents and placed with a different relative all in one night. Later in her life she got married, then eight months later he died right infront of her in the middle of a ‘sleep paralysis hallucination’. Can we really blame the girl for being crazy? All her life her siblings didn’t believe anything she saw. After her husband’s death, she was back in therapy and on some heavy medication. The ‘bent neck lady’ returned and she stopped taking her meds. One night, she tried phoning every sibling and no one would answer, her Dad answered but by this point it was too late. She returned to the house where her mum died and where all the paranormal stuff happened. I feel like I can relate to Nell in some ways. She was young and scared and she thought she was hallucinating. Being someone who suffers from hallucinations that scare me and relying on heavy medication, it broke my heart seeing her suffer as I know what it feels like, and I’d never wish it on anyone. They shown two scenes regarding Nell’s death. First, it was a brief scene of Nell dancing round the empty, black house wearing a white nightgown. Then they show her hanging herself. A few episodes later, the timeline jumps back to Nell’s death and goes into more detail. She drives to the house and when she pulls up outside, all the lights are on inside in every room. She goes into the house and it is clean and fully furnished, all of her family are in there and so is her husband. She dances around the bottom floor of the house in her husband’s arms and she kisses him. She’s truly happy, so much she cries. She’s with everyone she loves. Her family start apologising to her - for not being there, for not believing her, for arguing etc. This leads to her going up the same stairs her mum jumped off. her mum gives her a necklace and she puts it on, then her mum pushes her off the stairs - the necklace was a noose. What bothered me most was she was so happy before her death after so long of being miserable.

A couple who tend to the house, Clara and Horace Dudley, find Nell’s body when they come to check on the house. The family are told straight away. The body is collected and taken to the funeral home Nell’s sister Shirley owns. Shirley herself does the embalming and funeral directing. The open casket viewing is emotional, the Dad turns up after not seeing his children in years. Her siblings get drunk and have a big argument. Shirley catches Theo making a move on her husband. Dad and Theo see a very dead looking Nell crawl across the room towards them. I feel the casket viewing went how a lot of broken family gatherings would go - too much alcohol and too many words being said. That’s another thing I could relate to - family disputes. I wouldn’t say my childhood was in a broken immediate family, but my teenage years were and my whole family certainly has it’s issues. I can’t help but feel if both sides of my family got together under the same circumstances, it would end the same way it did in this show, if not worse. Maybe without the sister trying to get her sister’s husband. It really highlighted how broken the family is from their behaviour at the casket viewing.

Her funeral and casket viewing scenes were emotional, they put a lump in my throat. Death of a loved one is one of my biggest fears, so watching these things are difficult for me. Seeing the pain in her family over her death, especially her twin brother, it killed me. I felt like I was grieving myself, they made me feel such strong emotions over these scenes - not many movies, shows or books have done that. Props to them. Even now, hours later, I am still a bit sad.

The biggest plot twist? The bent neck lady Nell saw since childhood. Guess who she was? That’s right, she was Nell herself. After Nell was hung, she was shown flashbacks of her life to every time she saw the bent neck lady, only she WAS the bent neck lady. The bent neck lady never tried to scare her, she was doing the opposite and was scared herself. I was in shock when this happened.

Not only did I form an attachment to Nell, I also did to her 90-seconds-older twin brother, Luke. Luke is a heroin addict in and out of rehab. Watching his struggle was difficult, seeing how badly he wanted to come clean and how hard it was for him wasn’t the easiest thing to witness. In their childhood, Luke was the only person who believed Nell with the things she was seeing.

Theo - Theo was the second oldest sister. She had some sort of psychic power where when she touched things or people with her bare hands, she’d know stuff. So she always wore gloves. I particularly admired Theo, she used her ‘power’ for good but didn’t let people take advantage of her. She was a strong character and possibly my favourite in the whole season. Her actress captured her perfectly, plus, she was incredibly pretty. There’s a moment where she breaks down to her sister, Shirley. Shirley is mad at her for trying to sleep with her husband when that isn’t what happened. Theo had touched Nell after she died and with her psychic ability, she was consumed by a dark emptiness. The way she got out of it was embracing her sister’s husband in the dark. The way Theo broke down talking about what happened, it was powerful and one of the best performances of the whole show.

Steve - Steve was the oldest of all the siblings. I strongly disliked him. He never believed anything Nell or his mum said, he was completely in denial about everything and as an adult, he just had a horrid attitude. He was too quick to call his family crazy, while at the same time writing their stories in books and making a big profit off of it despite not believing any of it. Only in the last ten minutes or so did I even slightly like Steve. I feel his character was badly written, it is no fault of the actor that I didn’t like him. He didn’t contribute much to the story other than the fact his character wrote the book about it - but the story would have been the same without the book existing, so again, didn’t contribute.

Shirley - I don’t really have much to say about Shirley. She’s the least touched upon character. I didn’t particularly like her as I thought she was rude and dull. She also didn’t contribute much to the story and was just being negative a lot of the time. I felt for her when she had to embalm her sister, although for quite a while she didn’t show any emotion to it which I didn’t like but I see why they did it.

The red room - The red room is a room in the house that no one could get into. Even with the skeleton key, it couldn’t be opened. They tried busting the door open and still couldn’t get in. The red room comes up a lot throughout the show. I like the mystery about the red room, although I don’t really get the ending to it. Apparently, they were all in the red room. For the mum it was a reading room, for Shirley it was a family room, for Theo it was a dance room, for Luke it was a treehouse, for Steve it was a games room and for Nelly it was a toy room. How none of them realised this, I do not know. Towards the end they all see that room for what it is, but I don’t really get how it was all these different rooms for the whole family. What if Nell wanted to be in the toy room and Steve wanted to be in the games room both at the same time? They don’t really explain this very well, I would like to know more. Quite at the beginning, Shirley has the skeleton key and she’s rattling the door handle trying to get in, Theo is in her dance room and her door handle rattles, even though Theo isn’t behind that exact door at the time it’s two seperate rooms and the children can’t hear eachother through the door... Explain!!

There are a few completely random things going on, the red room being one of them. Another being a forty year old body was found in the walls of the basement. Why? It was the body of someone barely mentioned, and if I am correct we don’t even see his ghost. This was yet another thing that didn’t contribute to the plot so I’m not sure why it was added. Another random thing is the character Abigail. Young Luke has a friend called Abigail who ‘lives in the woods’. No one else has ever seen her and they all say no one live sin the woods, so they say she’s an imaginary friend. Well one night she just randomly decides to stay over and apparently no one knows - both parents said yes thinking she was imaginary. She also dies that night. She is the child of Clara and Horace Dudley who live around a fifteen minute walk from the mansion. She dies there so her ghost is stuck there. The night the dad and kids flee from the house, the dad wants to burn the house down, but the Dudleys beg him not to as it is the only place they can see their little girl now that she has died. So he leaves it for them. Do they return every day to visit the ghost of their little girl? I’m assuming so. At the end of it, the Dudleys are very old, they both return to the house as Clara is dying. I’m assuming they both died in the house together to be with their daughter.

Clara has a sat down moment with Olivia and tells her of the things that happen in the house and how she won’t be in there after dinner time to avoid being there in the dark. Yet Olivia still stays in the house, even though these things are happening to her - why? Why doesn’t she leave when she is straight up told what happens? White people stupidity, that’s why. I am also weirded out with how the Dudleys were close with the previous family that lived in the house before the Craines moved in. They must have worked for the Hills for quite a while to be so close, yet they were relatively young and the Hills were in their youth in the 1920s. How old are the Dudleys? How long had they been working at this house? The times are slightly off. The Dudleys also takl about how their child was a stillborn which I thought was just more unnecessary sadness added to the show.

Towards the end when all the siblings end up in the red room, one of the spirits called Poppy hits them all in the face which sends them into the hallucination. Why? Why is Poppy getting involved? Poppy was one of the worst characters, the acting was questionable and there wasn’t much point to her. She killed Olivia and put awful ideas into her head. Why did she hit the siblings in the face and send them into a hallucination? When they all snapped out of it with help from Nell’s spirit and were all in the room together.

A part that messed with me a little bit was Steve was back at home with his wife. He was writing a book about what happened that night they all returned to the house. His wife comes home and is heavily pregnant. It turns out this is all a hallucination, he isn’t at home and the night isn’t over and his wife isn’t pregnant. He then wakes up back in the red room. This shocked me, I thought things had gotten better then it turns out it wasn’t real.

When they all return to the house, the spirits are out. Abigail is on the stairs watching them, and one spirit in particular made me uncomfortable. There was an incredibly tall man floating and using a cane he would tap on the floor with every ‘step’. He leaned over everyone and was incredibly creepy. I think the reason he made me so uncomfortable is because he reminds me of my main hallucination, see THIS POST if you want to read more about this.

For a good full episode it looks like Luke is going to do - one large hallucination and a hospital visit later, he lives! Hoorah.

I have so many questions about this show. I just sat here and watched ten hours of it, yet I still have things unanswered. I am very glad this wasn’t a movie - there’s no way this could all be squeezed into an hour and a half.

Would I recommend this show? YES. I haven’t enjoyed something this much since IT part 2, and even that was the first horror I fully enjoyed in about a year. Will I be watching season 2? I’ll be counting down the days. I also plan on the book the next season is based on - The Turn of The Screw by James Henry - before release, get my own view on it.

Pairing: Stray Kids’ Jisung x Reader

Con Amore: an Italian musical term designating the singer to sing the melody with love

The beat played in the background of the studio as Jisung stood in the recording booth, meticulously rapping his part for Stray Kids’ upcoming track. Suddenly, the back track stopped.

“Can you redo that last line?” you asked into the mic, “Your intonation sounds weird.” Chan nodded in agreement from next to you. “Also,” you leaned towards the mic again, “add more emphasis on the first syllable please.” Jisung gave you a thumbs up before going back and rapping his line again, now fixed with your suggestions. You smiled at him through the glass, even giving him a thumbs up when he finished.

“Amazing work, Jisung,” Chan said as his bandmate entered the studio.

“Couldn’t have done it without my favorite producer’s help,” Jisung replied as he ruffled your hair. You stuck your tongue out at him playfully

“I’m hurt,” Chan exclaimed dramatically, clutching his chest. You rolled your eyes at their banter.

“Wait, what time is it?” you asked both boys, already shoving some of your things into your bag.

“4:20pm,” Chan said after glancing at his watch.

“Oh shit,” you mumbled before scurrying towards the door. “I gotta go, guys. Monthly evaluations start in 10 minutes. See you tomorrow!”

Adrenaline pumped through your veins as you dropped to your knees and slid across the floor, bending yourself backwards, and watching as Sera flipped over you. As the song entered the next verse, you got up off of the floor and went straight into rapping, losing yourself to the beat you had produced just weeks prior. Sera quickly went into her rap verse, her energy bouncing off of you. Then the two of you got back into formation with the rest of the girls, moving along to the choreography Sera perfected just 3 days ago. The chorus came, and a girl named Haeun belted out your lyrics. When the climax of the song came, you and her stood in the center of the formation, going back and forth with high notes and ad libs. The music from the stereo stopped, and the entire group lined up in age order in front of the trainers.

“So the song is self-produced?” Ms. Kim, the vocal trainer asked. The group nodded. “Who produced the track?”

“I did, Ms. Kim,” you said politely, raising your hand, “I also composed the track and wrote the lyrics with Sera’s help.”

“And Sera choreographed the entire thing?” Mr. Park, the dance trainer asked.

“We worked together to come up with the big picture,” Sera stated.

“But Sera pulled together our ideas to form one cohesive choreography,” you chimed in. The trainers nodded at your statement but kept their eyes trained on the papers in front of them: the papers that outlined your age, talents, weights, and other info.

“You’ve been producing a lot haven’t you, Y/N?” Ms. Kim asked, eying your profile.

“Yes, ma’am.”

“You assisted producing and composing for Twice’s latest album, GOT7’s sophomore album, and Stray Kids’ upcoming mini-album?”

“She also wrote most of 15&’s songs,” Sera chimed in this time.

“Who?” Ms. Kim asked. You chose to stay silent for her sake. After another beat of silence Ms. Kim spoke again, “Nice work on the song, Y/N.” You bowed gratefully at her compliment, hoping your curtain of hair hid your triumphant smile.

“Clean choreography as well, Sera,” Mr. Park said. Your best friend also bowed down a full 90 degrees. “No laggers this time,” he stated. You could see the two youngest trainees in your group let out a sigh of relief.

“Also amazing high note, Haeun. Good usage of the JYP technique,” Ms. Kim complimented. Haeun beamed and also bowed. You chewed at the inside of your cheek. Let’s say you weren’t exactly too fond of your agency’s infamous technique.

“Now, girls, I’m pretty sure you’ve heard the rumors by now,” Mr. Park started, “And I’m going to tell you that they’re true. We are looking at debuting a new girl group by the beginning of next year.” The excitement in the room grew tenfold. “No decisions are final yet, but we will let you know in the following week who will make the final group. You’re dismissed.”

The moment you exited the stuffy dance studio, you let out a giant sigh of relief. “Jesus, I really thought I was going to get cut this time,” you said, pulling your water bottle out of your duffel bag and chugging half its content.

“Shut up,” Sera replied, rolling her eyes, “you’ve been here for what? Eight years now? How could they possibly get rid of you? You produce half of their artists’ albums now. You’re a triple threat. Plus, you’re my best friend, and you know if they kick you out, JYP’s finna catch these hands.” You giggled at her comment before pulling her aside.

“They almost got me for my weight,” you whispered, “I was half a kilogram over.” Sera looked at you incredulously.

“But you’ve been dieting for the past month? Like, for a whole week you only ate an apple a day!”

“I just need to hit the gym a couple more times a week,” you sighed, “And cut down on the snacks.”

“But,” Sera dropped her voice even quieter when Haeun walked by, “they’re not gonna cut you from the debut group because of your weight, right? Like, they didn’t kick you out because of your weight, so why exclude you from the group?”

“They didn’t kick me out because everyone knows I’ve been here for years, and this is just a minor fluke. Ms. Kim even brushed it off saying it’s my time of the month.”

“So you won’t get excluded from the final group?”

“Probably not, but I just need to step up my game for now. Can’t be known as the girl who got cut from joining SIXTEEN and from debuting in any of the girl groups,” you said wryly.

“Chin up, buttercup. We’re debuting together, and that’s a fact!”

“Y/N, do you think you could rearrange this song for me?” Haeun asked you the following day.

“‘Honey’ by Kehlani? I feel like the acoustic guitar is really the identity of the-”

“But can you rearrange it?” she asked, this time a bit more impatiently.

“I can, but how do you want it rearranged?” you asked, plastering on a smile.

“More pop, dance music-esque. I need a beat added to it, and, well, I don’t know. You usually do that part for me!”

“Yeah, just give me a couple hours,” you said, already putting on your headphones. Haeun prances out of the practice room, only to be replaced by Sera.

“What did the princess want?” Sera asked.

“Just a rearrangement done,” you replied blandly, already focusing on the beat you were conjuring up.

“Ya know, I can’t hate her because she’s so talented, but god, she’s irritating.”

“She’s not that bad,” you said, already laying down the track, “She just doesn’t really understand what it means to be part of a team yet, which makes sense because she’s an only child and has only been a trainee for 6 months.”

“Yeah, I guess you’re right,” Sera said before looking at the clock, “Hey, Y/N?”

“Hm?”

“Aren’t you helping Chan oppa today?”

You nodded, not really looking up from your laptop.

“Shouldn’t you go now?” Sera insisted. You finally tore your attention away from your rearrangement to see that, yes, you should definitely head to the recording studio now.

“Sorry I’m late,” you exclaimed, bowing to the many people that filled the studio.

“It’s fine,” Chan said, “Just help us make an awesome song and you’re forgiven.”

“Sounds like a plan!” You looked down at the sheet in front of you, “So Felix is recording today?” The freckle-faced boy sent you a little salute before heading into the recording booth.

“Ah, Y/N, Jisung’s going to help you with recording today,” Chan said, “I still need to finish up the last two songs for the mini-album.”

“Yeah, that’s fine! Jisung’s fun to work with too.”

“See, hyung, Y/N likes me better,” Jisung said, cheekily sticking his tongue out too.

“Hey! Don’t go starting rumors about me now,” you said, laughing.

“Mhm, you owe me one, brat!” Chan’s voice rung out even after the door closed after him.

“Anyways…” Jisung stalled, “Let’s just get the rest of them done?”

“Okay, Felix,” you said into the mic.

“Yeah?”

“From your first line, okay?”

“I’m exhausted,” you exclaimed, slamming your head down on the table.

“Really? You’re usually fine after a session,” Jisung replied. He was the last member left in the recording studio; the rest had filed out of the room ages. “Want a snack? That usually brings your energy back up.” He starts digging around his bag.

“Nah, I can’t. I’m dieting.”

“Dieting? What for? You seem fit to me.”

“It’s just, well, there’s a lot going on right now,” you said.

“Really? Like what?” he asked, leaning forward.

“You really want to know?”

“C’mon, we’re close!”

So for the next two hours you found yourself curled up in a ball on the recording studio’s couch across from Jisung as you spilled out everything. He learned that you were up to be part of the next girl group, but nothing is certain. He empathized with you when you let out all of your concerns: your weight, your ancient trainee status, your seemingly plateauing skills. Heck, he even heard you slip out your slight dislike for a certain six-month old trainee. After speaking him for so long, your chest felt itself lighten from all the stressors that had buried you over time.

“So what now?” Jisung asked after your rant.

“I find out sometime this week if I’m in the final debut group or not,” you said, “I find out if my 10 years of training is really worth it.”

“But you’re one of the most talented people I know!” he exclaimed earnestly.

“Thanks,” you said shyly, “But it takes more than talent to debut.”

“And you have all of those things! I swear, Y/N, you’re talented, hilarious, passionate, beautiful-” his eyes widened at his last adjective. “Wait, I didn’t mean that! Wait, no, like, you are beautiful, but I meant that in a completely non-creepy-” He immediately closed his mouth when he felt your lips pressed on his cheek.

“Thank you, Jisung,” you said when you pulled away, “It means a lot hearing that from you.”

Beads of sweat trailed down your face as you amped up the speed of the treadmill just a hair faster. Your legs burned, but you kept at it; the looks of your trainers’ faces when they saw your weight fueled you.

“Tsk,” Ms. Kim only glanced at the scale before writing it down. Mr. Park tried to give you a reassuring shrug, but the extra pound glared right back at you.

“Can Mr. Park leave the room?” you asked, steadying your voice. The dance instructor didn’t utter a word as he left the room. You stripped yourself of your hoodie, jeans, and t-shirt. The number dropped a mere half pound; a sob almost escaped your lips.

“I’ll round down this time around, Y/N,” Ms. Kim said, already scribbling the goal weight down, “But don’t expect it next time around.”

“Thank you so much, Ms. Kim,” you exclaimed, giving her a full 90 degree bow when you got off the scale.

“Don’t let me down, kid. You’re probably the best vocal trainee we got in this company; I’d hate to let you go.”

Your limbs were screaming at this point, but you kept at your robotic pace, keeping your eyes trained on the clock on the opposite wall.

2:43am. You still had so much left to go.

“Yo, Y/N, you okay?” Sera asked the next morning. She had a hand on your arm, steadying you as you almost trip over your own two feet.

“Yeah, I just spent some extra time in the gym yesterday,” you tried waving her off.

“How much extra?”

Your silence gave it away.

“Did you spend all night in the gym?” she exclaimed, “Do you not remember what happened last time that happened? You were in the hospital for two whole days!”

You winced at her words. “I’m sorry, Sera. I just really need to make the debut group,” you sighed.

Your best friend engulfed you in a hug, “Don’t stress! We’re getting in together!”

A week has passed, and you were finally safe under the weight limit. The anxiety of possibly debuting was pushed aside as you spent your hours awake producing, arranging, and practicing music. You’ve been so caught up in work, you didn’t realize you were staring into space for a solid five minutes in the corner of the dance studio.

“Y/N?” Jisung called your name for the sixth time as he waved his hands in front of your face, “You good, fam?”

“Y-yeah, I just find out if I debut today or not,” you said, trying to shake the nervousness out of your voice, “Nothing major.” You cleared your throat, “Anyways, what are you doing here? Thought you were still working in the recording studio.”

Jisung sat down next to you, “I finished earlier than expected and wanted to check on you. Chan-hyung mentioned you were finding out if you debut today. Don’t be too nervous, Y/N!” He gave you a bright smile causing you to send him one right back. “There’s that pretty smile,” he said softly, “Don’t let it fade away, Y/N, things will work out for you.”

“Thanks, Jisung,” you replied, your voice barely over a whisper. The air shifted between the two of you. The loud banter usually exchanged between you two was replaced by a softness characterized by lingering looks and bashful smiles. “Um,” you broke the silence awkwardly, “I better head to the meeting room now.”

Jisung stood up first and held out his hand for you. Slowly, you extended your hand and allowed for him to help you up. “Good luck, Y/N,” Jisung said, his hand still clasped around yours.

“Thank you, Jisung,” you slipped your hand out of his after, “I’ll let you know what happens!”

“We’ll be announcing the girls debuting today,” Ms. Kim announced.

“Kim Sera, main dancer,” Mr. Park said. Your best friend burst into a wide grin, bowing and thanking the trainers profusely.

“Kwon Hyorin, main rapper, and Lee Suji, lead rapper,” Ms. Kim read off from the list. The two girls smiled and thanked the trainer.

“Lee Minju, lead dancer,” Mr. Park added, “You worked hard in this past year.” The young girl smiled in reply and softly thanked him.

“Lee Haeun, main vocal & visual,” Ms. Kim said. The girl beamed proudly and thanked the trainers also. “Those are the only girls debuting. Hopefully you all can pick a leader for yourself; we’ll inform you of the group name in a couple of days. Good work, girls.”

It was like the world came crashing down. You bowed respectively to the trainers as they left the room, but your feet wouldn’t budge from your spot. The whispers started around you as the girls eyed you strangely.

“How’d she not make it again?”

“Just look at her body? How could anyone looking like that debut?”

“God, it must suck to be her right now.”

“Y/N, you alright?” Sera asked. She was already ready to engulf you in a big hug. You allowed her to comfort you for a bit before pulling away.

“I have to go practice,” you muttered, “I’ll see you in a bit.”

“Did you hear?” Felix asked the guys scattered on the floor of the dance studio; their heavy breaths fogging up the mirror after hours of choreo practice.

“Hear what?” Seungmin asked.

“Y/N didn’t make the debut group.”

The sound of a water bottle crashing to the ground rung throughout the studio. The guys looked up to see Jisung standing in shock, a pool of water forming around his feet.

“What?” the rapper asked, “What do you mean she didn’t make it? She was practically leading the whole girl trainee group for the past five years!”

Felix just shrugged. “It’s JYP. When is he never a snake?”

The light guitar strums and snaps of “I Like Me Better” played over the speaker as you moved fluidly with the music. You kept your eyes trained on the mirror, making sure your expressions matched the tone of the song and that your limbs didn’t look too forced or stiff while you moved through the choreography.

“Y/N?”

You almost tripped over your own feet at Jisung’s voice.

“H-hey, what are you doing here so late?” you asked, scurrying over to the speaker to shut the music off.

“I wanted to check on you, and I figured you’d be in here.”

“Well, here I am,” you said with an awkward flourish.

“You alright?” Jisung approached apprehensively, stopping only a foot in front of you. You looked over at the stereo as you nodded in reply, but his eyes stayed in the same soft, worried way they had been since he’d entered the room.

“I got cut, Jisung.” Your voice was barely over a whisper, but he could still pick up on the little tremor at the end of his name.

“Hey, hey, hey,” he put his hand on your arm, “It’s alright, Y/N. C’mere.” He wrapped his arms around your shoulders and pulled you closer to him. You looped your arms around his waist and buried your face into his shoulder. Jisung’s words of comfort wafted through your ears, an absent-minded hum to the overwhelming feeling of weight pressing on your chest.

“I’ve just worked so hard,” you cried into his shoulder, “And I don’t know what else I can do.” Jisung tentatively lifted his hand to run them through your hair soothingly. “What if this is my best, and I’m never going to get good enough to debut?”

“Hey, Y/N,” he held you at arm’s length now, “I can 100% assure you that you are worth way more than what those trainers picked, okay?” A small grinned played on his lips. “I swear that I’m not lying to you when I say you’re the most talented trainee in this whole damn company. It’s just,” he paused, “Sometimes the opportunity we think we missed is just something that will open a door for us later on in life. Don’t beat yourself up over this, Y/N. Prove them wrong. Show them that you’re meant to debut.”

You let out a derisive scoff. “I think they made it obvious I’m not debuting.”

“Talk to Momo-sunbae, Felix, Minho-hyung, and maybe you’d get a different answer. Trust me, Y/N. I think you are perfectly awesome just the way you are, and I know most of your peers know that too.”

You went back into his arms for another hug. There was always something about Jisung that made you feel safe and sound. Maybe it was the warmth he emitted whenever he came in contact with you, arms snuggly wrapped around your figure. Maybe it was the way his voice made the back of your neck tingle just a bit when he lowered his voice to give you words only meant for your ears. Or maybe it was just him. Jisung. The guy that’s been by your side since he joined JYP.

“Thanks, Jisung,” you murmured, pulling yourself back just a bit. From this angle, you realized exactly how expressive his eyes were. It was as if he was pouring every single one of his thoughts into his gaze.

“No problem, Y/N.” Neither of you had let go yet. “Y/N?”

“Yeah?” Your voice was breathier than intended.

“You feeling better?” He was already leaning down.

“Yeah.” You decided to meet him halfway; your lips meeting in the middle. Was it awkward? Yes. But did you hate it? No. Jisung brought his hand up to cradle you cheek, trying to figure exactly what to do with his hands. Suddenly you pulled away. “What about the cameras?” you asked, wanting to kill yourself for pulling such a rookie mistake.

“Blind spot.” Jisung gestured to the cameras, “They don’t catch this corner for some reason.”

“Thank god,” you sighed, “So we can continue.”

“W-what?” Jisung’s eyes blew up comically.

“C’mon, Romeo, you’re the one that took advantage of an emotionally wrecked girl,” you teased.

“Hey, weren’t you the one that kissed me?”

You wrapped your arms around his neck. “Just shut up and kiss me before I get sad again,” you replied, laughter threatening to spill past your lips.

“Did you finish my arrangement?” Haeun questioned you one day in the hallway.

“Yeah, I sent it to you, like, 20 minutes ago?” you replied.

“Awesome! I’m planning on using it for the pre-debut showcase. They’re letting all of us have our own solo stages to showcase our individual talents!”

Ah yes, another twist in the knife already impaled in your heart. “Sounds great, Haeun,” you gritted.

“Plus, I’m going to the salon tomorrow. I heard they’re going to dye my hair blonde for debut! Do you think the managers will let me dye it another color?” Hauen pouted. “I heard all the visuals nowadays get natural hair colors while their members get weird ones.”

You were six steps away from throttling the poor girl.

“Haeun! Help Minju with her vocal warm-ups!” You had never been so glad to hear Sera’s voice.

“Thanks, Sera,” you uttered as Haeun pranced away from you.

“Anything to get rid of that brat,” Sera joked before looking at you with concern. “You okay, Y/N?”

“Yeah, I’m just getting some background work done. Ya know, arranging and producing and all that.”

“I heard you’re composing our debut track,” Sera said with a wry smile.

“Yeah, composing, writing, producing,” you counted them off on your fingers. “Make this debut lit, Sera. I’ve always wanted to swim in a pool of money from all my royalties,” you jested.

Your best friend hesitantly smiled right back. “I swear I will, Y/N. I’ll make you proud!”

“Again,” you demanded into the microphone. Haeun readjusted her headphones before belting out the bridge again. You winced at the strained quality of her voice. “It’s fine for now, next up is Sera.”

You were used to this already. In the weeks leading up to the showcase, you were tasked with ensuring the success of the girl group’s music. Funny how JYP could trust you with the future of his next big thing, but he couldn’t trust you to be in his next big thing. Time ticked away quickly as you settled into your zone. That was until an incessant cough kept snapping you out of it.

“Do you need water, Haeun?” you inquired.

“I’ve got some,” she said.

“Then drink it.” You returned your attention back to Minju standing in the recording booth. “We can’t have you getting sick when the showcase is next week.”

“I know,” Haeun replied matter-of-factly. “I’m going to rest my voice for the rest of the day,” she got up off of the couch, “Am I dismissed?”

You waved her off. “Don’t forget to drink warm water with honey and lemon, you brat!” The girl might be growing on you.

Hauen rolled her eyes at your advice.

Okay, maybe not.

Recording goes by smoothly, and you find yourself burning the midnight oil as you work on mixing all the components together. However, you kept on being pulled back to the bridge of the song, wrinkling your nose at how the audio sounded no matter how much you tweaked it. You were so engrossed in your work that you didn’t notice a certain someone sneak up behind you.

“Boo,” Jisung whispered, tapping on your shoulder. You jolted in surprise before turning around to see his grinning face.

“Not funny, Jisung.” You scowled at him.

“C’mon, Y/N, don’t give me that face.” He poked your cheek, but you continued to glare at him. “I won’t do it again?” he offered.

“Fine,” you sighed before turning back to your work. “What do you want?”

“Just wanted to see what you were up to at,” he turned to look at the clock, “1:34am.” You didn’t verbally reply, instead handing him the headphones you were wearing earlier. He placed them over his ears, and you played him the rough mix. Jisung bobbed his head along to the beat, smiling at a really cool switch up you did in the second chorus, and then wincing when he got to that part in the bridge.

“It’s bad isn’t it?” you grimaced, taking the headphones back from him after the song ended.

“No! The song is good! It’s just,” he paused, “whoever is singing the high note and adlibs during the bridge sounds really strained.”

“Yeah, the main vocal’s throat hasn’t been in the best shape, and the company wants the song to be pretty much perfect in two days, but I can’t get her to redo her recording of the bridge part because I really don’t want her to mess up her throat even more.” You slammed your head down on the table and let out a frustrated groan. “I don’t know what I should do.”

“Why don’t you just do the high note and adlib recording and mix it in?” Jisung inquired. His voice was so soft, you barely heard him say it.

“What?”

“Well, it’s just a high note and adlib, right? Your voice shouldn’t be too distinct? Plus, it’ll get the recording done just in time for the company’s deadline?”

You mulled over his words for a second. Maybe it’ll work? Your mind couldn’t pull up any other solutions, so you found yourself standing in the recording booth, belting out the notes with ease. Jisung manned the recording equipment, giving you a thumbs up whenever you hit a high note perfectly. For the first time since the debut group was announced, you were genuinely smiling. It felt so good to be able to sing out to your heart’s content, knowing that it’ll end up being heard by thousands of people.

“Was it good?” you asked Jisung once you stepped out of the booth.

“Good? That was the best I’ve heard you sing since you joined this company,” he teased.

“Gotta make sure the girls do well. Even if it means someone else taking credit for my work,” you stated. Jisung frowned at your words.

“What? No! Just let the company know that you sang the high notes and adlibs since the main vocal was sick. I’m sure they’ll give you credit.” He sounded extremely unsure on his last statement.

“And completely expose the main vocal for not doing the main vocal’s job?” you snorted. “It’s fine, Jisung. This is just a one time thing.”

You had lied to yourself that night. It was definitely not a one time thing. This was being proven to you just this second as the stylists fitted you in an outfit probably worth ten times more than you ever will. How exactly did you get to this moment?

“Haeun is sick,” Ms. Kim stated the Friday you presented the debut track to the board, “We just rushed her into the hospital last night.”

“What are we going to do?” Sera asked, stepping into her appointed leader position, “Our pre-debut showcase is Monday. How can we perform if our main vocal is sick? We didn’t even record the pre-recorded tracks yet for our stages!”

“We can always just delay the showcase? Cite that our main vocal had fallen ill due to overworking herself,” a board member proposed.

“How can we do that when the girl’s stricken with Mono?” Ms. Kim snapped, “She wasn’t even working that hard!”

“We also can’t delay it since our fans have been excited for this for weeks now,” Sera chimed in, “We might get a lot of backlash for this.”

“What do you propose we do then?” Mr. Park asked.

“Why don’t we just have a stand-in for Haeun?” Ms. Kim said in all seriousness, “Have some trainee do her part during the showcase; we’ll just have Haeun pre-record her introduction part or any other speaking parts for the showcase.”

“What trainee has the same vocal prowess as Haeun? Same build? You can use make-up all you want, but you can’t copy Haeun’s natural looks and talent,” a board member countered.

“If you throw a cap over anyone’s head, their face is 95% covered,” Minju threw in.

“But who can we use as a stand-in?”

“Why not, Y/N?” Ms. Kim inquired, gesturing towards you. “She is one of the strongest vocal trainees in our company, and she’s been extremely involved with the debut group’s production, so she knows all of the setlist in terms of music and choreography.”

“Aren’t their voices different?”

“If you thought the high note and adlibs in the debut track were Haeun, I’m here to inform you that you should retract your statement right this instant.” Her voice was strangely cold when she reprimanded that board member. It was weird to have the usually stoic teacher be by your side. “It’s settled then. Y/N will fill in for Haeun during the showcase.”

You stared at yourself in the mirror. It was strange to see yourself dolled up: your eyes smudged with peachy eye shadow and glitter, your lips tinted a pretty pink, and your hair slightly curled. It was also strange to see yourself wearing something other than a hoodie and training shorts; the peach blouse and high-waisted white shorts combo made you look way prettier than you could imagine. It was almost like you were going to debut. Almost.

“Ready?” Sera asked, handing you the white cap you’d be sporting during the showcase.

“To pass my voice off as Haeun’s? Ready as I’ll ever be.”

The showcase went without a hitch. You easily lip-synced along to Haeun’s pre-recorded talking segments, flowed along to the choreography, and belted out the lyrics to Haeun’s parts in all the songs. You were showered with the thunderous applause and cheers of the fans that had filled the theater. However, your smile faltered when you heard exactly what they were cheering.

“Haeun! Haeun! Haeun!”

That’s right. It wasn’t you they were cheering for. It’s the girl you’re pretending to be that they’re cheering for.

“Awesome work, Y/N,” Sera said, giving you a high five once the group filed off of the stage. You forced on a smile in return and handed your headset to the stagehand.

“Good work, everyone!” you said while bowing to each person respectively before ripping the white cap off of your head.

“Haeun is just sooooooo good!”

“Can we talk about Queen Haeun’s high note during her solo? Your fave could never!”

“Can’t wait for her debut!”

The fancams for the showcase had been released onto the internet, and the netizens were ready. You scrolled past comment after comment praising “Haeun’s” talent: proud that your voice brought about such a positive reaction, bitter that it was Haeun getting all the praise.

“Hey Y/N!” You didn’t even bother to look up.

“Hey, Jisung,” you mumbled. Your eyes were still glued to your phone screen, thumbs scrolling absentmindedly as you poured over the seemingly endless comments.

“What’s wrong?” he asked, brows furrowing together in concern. You just held out your phone for him. He plopped down next to you on the floor and took your phone from your hands. “I don’t see the problem? It looks like the public is excited for the girl group’s debut?”

“Play the video,” you deadpanned. At this point, you leaned your head against his shoulder. Jisung stiffened beneath the sudden contact but obliged.

It wasn’t even a minute in before he went, “Oh shit.”

“Yeah.”

“That’s you.”

“I know.” You readjusted your head on his shoulder and interlocked your fingers with his.

“Y/N, what are you doing?” he stuttered out. Cheeks flushing at the sudden amount of contact you were enacting with him.

“I’m upset, and you’re always here when I’m an emotional mess, so accept the fact you’re now my source of comfort,” you grumbled while snuggling into his side.

“I’m your source of comfort, huh?” Jisung asked with a stupidly cheeky smile.

“Don’t make me say it again, you fool. I’m upset right now, and you don’t want me to get more upset,” you warned.

“Yeah, I know.” He sat with you in silence for a good five minutes before saying something. “What are you going to do? With this whole ‘Haeun is getting all the credit for your work’ thing?”

“I don’t know,” you mumbled, “The company’s gonna kick me out if I say anything since I’d be slandering the upcoming group. Plus, this is a one time thing, so I guess I’ll be fine?”

“But you deserve to be in the debut group if they keep making you do all of her work!” Jisung countered. For once in your life, you heard Jisung sound angry.

“What do you expect me to do?” you cried. Your head was no longer on his shoulder.

“I don’t know, Y/N!” he shot back. His expression immediately softened when he realized you were tearing up.

“You don’t think I’ve already tried everything, Jisung,” you whimpered. “The board threatened to kick me out of the company if I say anything about this.”

“Hey, hey, hey.” He engulfed you in a hug. “I’m not angry at you, Y/N. I’m just angry at the company for treating you this way.” He could feel his shirt getting wet from the tears you were shedding. “It’s okay, Y/N. Just let it out. We’ll fix this.”

You didn’t know exactly what Jisung meant when he said those words until exactly two days later. You had awoken to your phone being bombarded with texts from Sera (she had not had her phone revoked just yet).

Sera - “Y/N CHECK WHAT’S TRENDING!!!!!!!!!”

You groggily rubbed your eyes before pulling up the link Sera just sent you. Suddenly you found yourself fully awake. You jolted upright, proceeding to bump your head against the ceiling, and scrolled through the article detailing the truth behind the pre-debut showcase.

“Hi everyone,

I don’t know where else I can put this, so I decided to put it here. So everyone know JYP is debuting a new girl group, and they had their first talent showcase recently. Well, I have some information to share. The main vocal debuting isn’t the main vocal that sang at the showcase. They used a different trainee to sing her part since the main vocal fell ill. I wanted to let everyone know that the main vocal can sing, but it hurts me to see her get credit for someone else’s work.

Everyone might be wondering how I know this. I’ve been working at JYP for a very long time now, and I personally know both girls involved in this situation. Thank you for reading my post; I just wanted to get it off of my chest.”

Oh shit.

You scrolled through the thousands of comments on this post. A good portion were of netizens demanding proof or calling the OP a liar, but the majority of them seemed to have believed the OP, demanding JYP to release a statement. Your phone then buzzed, indicating you received another text.

Ms. Kim - “Come to the office now.”

You sat in front of the debut team’s board members, furiously gnawing on your lower lip.

“Do you have anything to say for yourself?” the man sitting at the head of the table.

“I didn’t post it, sir,” you meekly replied, “I don’t know who did.” He simply scoffed at your reply, but Ms. Kim stepped in.

“We checked the IP address of where the post came from, and it was traced to an internet cafe. Y/N was in the practice room at the time of the post according to our security cameras,” she stated. She glanced over to you for a split second before turning back to the board member. “For now, we can deny all allegations. The post never gave verified evidence of them being part of JYP to back up their claim.” The board murmured amongst themselves for a couple minutes before agreeing and letting you go.

Once you exited the meeting room, you stormed towards the dance studio, knowing very well who’d be there.

“Y/N?” Jisung asked in surprise when he heard the door slam open.

“Why would you do something so stupid?” you retorted, stomping up to him. “I could’ve been kicked out of the agency because of what you did!”

“I-I’m sorry, Y/N, but I couldn’t just sit around while the company screws you over!”

“Why does it matter, Jisung? Why does it matter so much to you what happens to me?”

“Well, I don’t know, Y/N! If you hadn’t noticed from all the kissing and touching we do, I actually do care about you a lot, and I’m so sick and tired of you being treated like you don’t matter because, well, you do matter!” He turned away from you and lets out a resigned sigh. “You matter a hell of a lot to me,” he mumbled before brushing past you and leaving the room.

The mess died down in the following handful of days after JYP denied all allegations of a stand-in singer for upcoming debut group’s main vocal. You continued through your normal routine: practice in the morning, working with the debut group for the rest of your day, and more practice in the late nights. It was a numbing process really. Sera was so busy preparing for debut that you couldn’t pull her aside for a chat like you used to. Chan no longer needed your help with producing since he was in the final process of completing Stray Kids’ recording. And Jisung, well, Jisung’s been avoiding you since that day in the dance studio. Life was slowly reverting back to normal, until another storm came your way.

There was another post trending this time. Another accusation towards JYP for using a stand-in vocalist. However, this one was different. This one had proof.

“Hi everyone,

I’m a different OP from last time, but I felt like I had to share this. I’ve been working for JYP for a very long time now, and I’m disappointed to see them try to cover up something like this. Honestly, they used a stand-in vocalist, another trainee, for their debut group’s main vocalist, and I have proof.

Linked to this post is a video I compiled. It compares the voice of the girl at the showcase to the voice of the debut group’s main vocalists. “What are we going to do now?” the head board member asked, “Our stocks are decreasing, and the interest for the upcoming girl group is too! And it’s all because of her!” He pointed an accusatory finger at you.

“I didn’t do anything, sir,” you replied calmly.

“It’s true,” another board member chimed in, “The IP address doesn’t match Y/N’s location when the post was published.”

“She could’ve queued it!” someone else chimed it.

“This isn’t Tumblr. You can’t just queue posts.”

“Well then,” the head member grumbled, “what are we going to do?”

“Listen to the people of course,” Ms. Kim spoke up for the first time since the meeting had started, “Put her in the debut group.” You swear you could’ve heard a pin drop after her statement.

“What now?”

“Put her in the debut group,” Ms. Kim said matter-of-factly, “People want her to debut. If we debut her, we’d appease the public, and the debut group will get a good boost after this ‘publicity’ stunt.” The board looked as equally shocked as you did. “Am I wrong?”

“I don’t see how it could hurt…” the head member murmured, mulling over the proposal.

“According to my calculations, we’d have an 154% increase in interest from the general public if she debuts in the group. We could sell it off as an underdog story. ‘Rising up to the challenge when a friend falls ill,’” another board member chimed in. You cringed at the cheesy underdog story they were trying to give you, but you kept your mouth shut. You might actually get to debut.

“Well, I think we all know the answer here, gentlemen,” Ms. Kim said. She then turned to you. “Looks like you’ll be debuting, Y/N.”

“Jisung!” you exclaimed, barreling through the dance studio door. Unsurprisingly, he was there sitting on the floor next to the stereo.

“Y/N?” He got up onto his feet.

“You’re an idiot, I swear to god, Han Jisung,” you said, marching up to him. You stopped right in front of him, toe to toe. “But you’re an idiot with a giant heart that’s way too big for me to handle, and you do stupid things because you believe they’re the right thing to do, and I want to thank you so much for being my big idiot because I’m debuting!”

Jisung could only stare at you in shock as the words began to register in his brain. Suddenly, he breaks out into a grin and wraps his arms around your waist, lifting you up and twirling you around. “Hell yeah you’re debuting!” he cheered. You giggled at the excitement that paints the entirety of his face.

“I’m so sorry for being such a ass about the whole thing, Jisung,” you said once he placed you back onto the ground, “I was just so scared about what would happen to you if they found out.”

“Hey, I’m sorry I didn’t ask for your consent to post it first. I should’ve thought about what would happen to you once I post the truth.”

“Now that we’re done apologizing,” you paused to pull him down by the collar to your face-level, “I want to give you my thanks.” You pressed your lips against his softly. Jisung quickly threw away his shock and molded his lips with yours before breaking out into a small smile.

“Wait, what about the cameras?” he mumbled, pulling away slightly.

“Blind spot,” you replied cheekily, “Now are you going shut your mouth and kiss me?”

“Happily.”

After a good twenty minutes of making out with Jisung, you found yourself cuddled into his side whilst sprawled across the dance studio’s floor.

“Jisung?” you asked, breaking the comfortable silence.

“Hm?”

“How exactly did you get the footage from my monthly evaluation?”

The boy turned to give you a cheeky little grin. “Let’s just say I’m not the only person that really wanted you to debut,” he hinted.

“Oh really now?” You cocked an eyebrow at him.

“Yup. A certain Ms. Kim was very adamant about sharing the monthly evaluation videos with me for some odd reason.”

“Oh my god, you’re joking.”

“Dead serious. Now I think I need another thank you present for pulling that off,” he teased while puckering his lips.

“Shut up or else I’m never kissing you again,” you replied with an eye roll. Jisung’s hands find themselves on your torso, and they pull you towards him. Your eyes widened at the sudden movement. “Jisung!”

“Take it back,” he pouted.

“You’re such a baby!”

“Take it back!”

“Never!” you replied, trying very hard to hide your smile.

“Fine then, you leave me no choice.” Jisung pressed his lips against your neck. You freeze at the sudden contact, but instantly tried squirming away once he blew a raspberry against your skin.

“Jisung!” you screeched while futilely trying to escape his grasp.

“Take it back!” You could practically hear the laughter in his voice.

“Fine! Fine! I take it back!” The raspberries ceased, and he turned you to face him. Jisung looked at you expectantly. You only let out a sigh before leaning in and placing a kiss on his lips. “Happy now?”

“That my girl is debuting and just gave me a kiss? Definitely. I’m definitely happy.”

EVOLVE 93 Live Review.

MATCH RATINGS: -Cedric/Yehi 3.5 -Yehi/??? NR -Henry/Kincaid 3.75 -Drake/Theory 2.75 -Freelance 4-way 3 -DJZ/Darby 3.75 -TrollBoyz/Workhorsemen 2.25 -ZSJ/Lee 4+ -Riddle/Tracy 4.25 -The venue was great. Plentiful free parking, air conditioning (on a 90+ degree day), plenty of concessions (including good, cheap pizza), alcohol, clean and spacious bathrooms. Zero complaints about that building. A comfortable fan experience if I've ever had one.

-Zack Sabre Jr. is the most naturally over babyface the Evolve roster has. The ovation he received from the Summit crowd was loud and sustained, different from the reactions received by Keith Lee and Riddle. It's not easy to describe, but ZSJ got everybody on their feet the most of anybody, while guys like Lee and Riddle received louder chants from the audience. Then again, "Ooh, Zack Sabre, Jr." is always a hit among the live crowd.

-DJZ and Darby Allin had one of the most fun, succinct matches I have seen in a hot minute. Both are criminally underrated and linger in that "we'll do anything to put on a good match" territory -- including Darby diving from the corner post to a seated DJZ on the floor. Nuts! These two need more bookings elsewhere. I'd love to see Darby in AAW -- maybe a rematch of this one?

-Matthew Riddle is the best wrestler in the world when it comes to fan interaction. He is second to none in this regard. I could write a fucking novel about the ways he has gone above and beyond for me, including naming his finishing move after me. Yes, he has a move called "The Derek," and he uses it to close matches. Exclusively. Nobody has kicked out of it yet. (That I have a finish named after me, that I gave to a wrestler who is my favorite, that is protected to this degree -- that Matt even points at the move's rightful owner before he hits it... come on. What the fuck is even going on?)

-I felt the Freelance showcase was a little rushed, like the guys were trying hard to impress, which led to a little sloppiness. Matt Knicks slipped off the top rope and nearly ended himself right in front of me. I didn't need to see that. Beyond that, this was a fun match that got the crowd going. Lots of "Free-lance Wrest-ling" chants. I saw people buying Stevie Fierce shirts and Freelance merch, and honestly, isn't that what it's all about?

-I laughed at the antics of the #TrollBoyz, but they looked extremely... how do I say this? Checked out? They're clearly unhappy in Evolve, and they wear it on their faces. Maybe run the next Evolve show in the Knights of Columbus in Hamilton, ON and these guys will perk up a bit, I don't know. Beyond the Yehi squash, the tag title match was my least favorite of the evening.

-Seeing Cedric Alexander was a treat, but something about his appearance felt a little off. Maybe it was because it was for the live audience only, maybe it was because it opened the show. The match was one of the best of the night, but people were still filing into the building and a number of them missed this match. I think offering an exclusive match at the start of the show, when you open doors only a half-hour early, is a bit silly. Open doors at 7, do the show at 8. What's difficult about that? Gives people more time to give you their money.

-Fred Yehi is a treasure. An over-the-top nice person and a heck of a wrestler to boot. Big personality. Fred needs more bookings.

-Anthony Henry is a bona fide star in the making, and the match he got out of Jason Kincaid was wonderful. I phrase it like that because Kincaid's style of offense is so much lighter and he can't take that huge beating you like to see out of a guy. But he meshed extremely well with Henry here, and this match really helped shape the beginning of the show for me. I think I liked this more than Cedric/Fred.

-If I never have to see Jarek 1:20 ever again, that will be too soon. I got up to take a leak and talk to Shigehiro Irie during his segment.

-I was not impressed by James Drake and his high-waisted trunks. Austin Theory is jacked beyond belief at like, 19 years old, and I'm afraid to see what he's going to look like when he's my age (for numerous reasons). I just wasn't a fan of this match. Priscilla Kelly is always nice to have around, but she didn't add much to this one. Not a bad match, don't get me wrong, but it didn't burn down the house.

-It was fancy seeing Dominic Garrini in Evolve as Stokely Hathaway's enforcer. I think if they play up that angle -- that he is Stokely's protection from guys like Riddle -- that would be for the best. Dom more than looks the part, and he kills it in the ring, so this was a good call. Love me some Dom.

-ZSJ and Keith Lee was some hot soup, though! I went four stars-plus on that, because I'm a sap who does star ratings, quarter-star ratings and all that other stupid Meltzer-like stuff. Lee dominated throughout the 18 minutes, flattening Zack with chops and elbow strikes, with Zack selling like a bastard. The finish was a bit rushed, and I honestly wanted to see Zack win by blunt force as opposed to a lucky flash pin, but I'm also an idiot. (Yes, Derek, ZSJ winning via five straight penalty kicks is great business!) Good pacing, much different from the match that followed.

-Apparently to the viewer at home, Keith Lee's consistent attention he gave the guys seated right behind me played into the match, and led to Lee getting pinned at the end. From a live viewership perspective, this flowed completely organically. I thought Keith was legitimately upset with these legitimate jerks behind me, so he kept staring over at my side of the arena. But he kept doing it. It was weird, a bit, just how distracted by these guys he was, at one point jawing at them that what he was about to do to Zack was because of them. Brilliant move that it tied into the rest of the match, but again, from my perspective seated in the front row, I thought it was just crowd interaction.

-My match of the night was Bro vs. Sauce in anything goes. There were restrictions they had to work around here, due to the building -- for example, they couldn't use the crowd chairs the way they wanted, and they couldn't do anything with tables since they were plastic. They wanted to do more but what they delivered was nevertheless creative and inspired and left fans wanting more. There were some funky-looking spots in this one, don't get me wrong. A Bro-buster on the apron, a tombstone on an open folding chair, and a Van Daminator from Riddle to Tracy, but using Riddle's knee. A respectable blow off match. Now, leave it at that. Don't pull an Ego/Darby and keep it going.

-Chicago crowd was hot all night. The draw was great. I would say there were maybe 250 there? Maybe 300? I am bad with numbers, but I had joked about the potential for a bad draw going into this show, and Evolve well surpassed my wildest dreams. I give them credit. They delivered on their promises and I don't think anybody went home unhappy. A return date should be announced sometime in the next calendar year. I think the Detroit/Chicago loop is lucrative and will work well in Evolve's current show rotation.

-Finally, I just wanted to say I got zero beef with Gabe or anybody. I respect the booker man and I had a nice chat with him after the show last night. I was hesitant to approach him, because of the whole "Derek trolls people online sometimes with his criticisms" thing, but fuck it, we're just people. And Gabe is a nice enough guy to me, has always been decent to me. WWN and Evolve get a lot of trash, but personally speaking, I still dig them and they will have a customer in me going forward. (There is no Bullet Club-style finger gun to my head as I say this.)

I think it's fair to say that this has been a month like no other, certainly in the UK, where the restrictions on movement that other places in the world were ahead of us on finally came down. These are strange times where we're all trying to get used to new ways of living, but I hope this month's show has some tunes that can lift your mood a little!

Heltah Skeltah : Operation Lock Down

The sampler 12" for the "Nocturnal" LP made its way onto my turntables this month, and this old 90s favourite wormed its way into my head as a possible inclusion for this episode. I umm-ed and ahh-ed but a chat with someone whose opinion I respect convinced me to go with it. Actually referring to Heltah Skeltah and Boot Camp Clik's goal to lock down the industry, it was a big statement of intent for the Ruck (Sean Price) and Rock, two MCs making their entry to the game. The skills are on display without question though, and this track is notable for being a reach outside their camp for production - E-Swift of Tha Alkaholiks is on the boards for the woozy, dreamlike thump. Big tune then, and unexpectedly fitting now.

Abstract Orchestra : Eyes Up

Great version of a solid Slum Village beat. Abstract Orchestra have been touring and recording for a while with their takes on J Dilla material, and along with the current lineup of Slum Village, they've finally released "Fantastic 2020", a version of the classic "Fantastic, Volume 2" with instrumental and vocal tracks. By the way - make sure to buy the two-disc CD version for all the content!

Voodoo Black ft. LayFullStop : In The Mood

Voodoo Black have been getting ratings here since the start - and it was an honour to have Dubbul O, one of the MCs, here as a guest last year - and so it's with great pleasure that we can talk about their debut LP! "Sitting At The Table" will have just been released as you read this, and it's a lean ten-track collection that does Manchester proud. Ellis Meade, Sparkz, and Dubbul O are joined on this particular number by adopted Manchester daughter LayFullStop, who really does set the mood on top of the DJ Cutterz beat. It's always great to see sustained effort come out on top!

Kombo ft. Vinia Mojica : Sands Of Time

I played the wicked B-side to this back on episode 2 (!), then filed the vinyl back on the shelf from where it occasionally made outings - but only as part of the recent effort to digitise my collection has the A-side really got the deep listening it deserved. Ge-ology on the chilled beat perfectly scores Kombo's love rhymes, and Vinia Mojica keeps it subtle with her vocal contribution.

Little Brother : Altitudes (Flyin' High)

Another great B-side that may have escaped your notice! Back in 2002, Little Brother were making noise on the underground as a promising crew on the rise - one of the first to blow up primarily on the internet - and their single "Whatever You Say" was a mixshow/mixtape staple of the time. Tucked away at the very end of the B-side was this little gem that didn't make the album (but was later heard on "The Chittlin Circuit 1.5"), themed around aviation and featuring classic 9th Wonder production underneath confident rhymes from Phonte and Big Pooh.

Consequence ft. Phife Dawg : No Place Like Home

One of the last tracks Phife ever recorded, this was a great release from last year. These two real-life cousins who both made their different contributions to A Tribe Called Quest over the years come together in an ode to their home of Queens over a smooth beat by Cons and Mike Cash, with Alex Isley on the hook. Yes, that "Isley" does in fact link directly to the famous Isley Brothers - the songwriting and multi-instrumentalist legend Ernie is her father!

Superior Thought : Sky

I was amazed I hadn't played this already - quality sample-heavy beat by a producer and engineer out of London, a 2011 release that feels like it was only out a few weeks ago! Pick this one up on the "S'strumentals" LP along with twenty-three other beats, and all for free!

Clear Soul Forces : Kraken

Always here for some CSF. Ilajide brings the bump as always, and on the mic, all the MCs are representing lovely. This was available on the Fat Beats 25th Anniversary Compilation from last year, but CSF have a brand new LP out which is well worth checking!

Freddie Gibbs & Madlib ft. Anderson .Paak : Giannis

Anderson does his thing here for sure, but Gibbs is unquestionably the star turn on the mic here. Waka Flocka Flame recently admitted being a "wack rapper" but said "my realness overcame my wackness". Freddie Gibbs has the realness and the skills. This is one of the big tunes from his second LP with Madlib, "Bandana", which is definitely worth your time for a listen. The quick line that gives the track its title ("real Gs move in silence like Giannis") might not be the first time someone has referenced a silent "G" in that way, but then Gibbs builds off it immediately afterwards like the elite MC that he is.

The Cool Kids ft. Louis The Child : Super Smash Bros

Tim Dog's "Fuck Compton" was an angry diss. Pusha T dripped with disgust at Drake's conduct on "The Story of Adidon". This? This is... disdainful. Dismissive. The Cool Kids sound like they're just annoyed they had to take time out of their day to address people who aren't coming up to standard. It's also kind of amusing to me that here's a group I remember as the new young artists - now, several years down the line, they are older heads disappointed about how the new generation of youngsters are doing it! Wicked single, with fellow Illinois natives Louis The Child providing the booming beat. Full marks for the inspired sampling of Ebro's rant for the break after the first verse; if you didn't know (and I didn't at first), you'd think this was recorded specifically for this track!

Stic : Motivated

It is so time for a second album of motivational music by Stic of dead prez! The original "The Workout" was an original and welcome release for those in the know, and hopefully the sequel can gather even more of a following. Here, his dramatic production comes through with "Eye of the Tiger" vibes filtered through a Hip-Hop mentality, with a positive lyrical message of pushing forward to victory!

DJ Bombjack : From The Depths Of The Soul

Another one that popped up in my vinyl conversion mission, this is a nice instrumental from a UK DJ and producer from the 1999 "The Brothers Grim" EP.

De La Soul : The Future

Supa Dave West made this one thump! This is the opener on "The Grind Date", and the sampled hook points to an mix of optimism about the future and a determination to shape it. The solid two verses speak on the unquestionably strong legacy De La have carved out over the years - and they're not done yet.

Lisa Shaw : I'm Okay

This was a track from the 2009 "Free" album that I overlooked for a long time in favour of some of the others, but have grown to appreciate. Lisa's voice has the kind of cool clarity that points to the influence of Sade, and Dave Warrin keeps the production low-key to give her space to breathe.

Jazzanova : No Use

A personal headphone favourite which somehow hadn't been played on the show yet! Jazzy (as you'd expect), continental, breezy production from the German production collective, with the kind of delicate balancing of elements that so many fail to master. Clara Hill's lead vocals fit in perfectly, making this a really satisfying listen. The "In Between" album is almost twenty years old, but hasn't really aged at all.

Pete Rock ft. Carl McIntosh & Jane Eugene : Take Your Time

If you've never heard Pete Rock's "Soul Survivor" LP, it's a must-own - he takes an imaginative selection of excellent guests and knocks it out of the park with his stellar production. This is a prime example, where he shows his appreciation for talent that wasn't necessarily "current" at the time, bringing in McIntosh and Eugene of the seminal UK group Loose Ends to lend their soulful vibes. The beat is a relaxed head-nodder supreme, and Pete gets it done on the mic too - not breaking your head open with crazy bars, just staying in the pocket, which is what the track needs.

MindsOne & Kev Brown : Manipulated (Instrumental)

Kev Brown really is one of the best when it comes to those basslines. My god. Serious beat from the 2014 "Pillars" EP.

The Notorious B.I.G. : Hypnotize

A huge tune to finish, one which can't fail to put a smile on your face! I first heard this one in a club, likely just before its official release, and the reaction it got was something special. The first single from "Life After Death", and the last Biggie record to be released before his death, this was a perfect combination of elements. Biggie's rhymes had skills for the streets but still appealed to the club and radio, The Hitmen took the Herb Alpert "Rise" sample and gave it new energy, and Total's Pamela Long nailed the infectious, sing-along hook. Fittingly for our current times, that hook is almost exactly twenty seconds long, making it a perfect timer for thorough hand-washing. So fresh, so clean.

I helped him work on the car since the first day we bought it with just the frame, body panels and wheels. We're finally about to finish it by painting it and he said he'll most likely give it to me as my next car. What I don't understand is how some people say that at my age, it won't be legal to drive a car this old due to insurance issues or something like that yet one of my friends owned a first generation Mercury Cougar as his first car and he seemed fine. He stated that when he saw the driveway that he cut from behind the bus to turn in then realized from the skidding that he turned in front of a car. His insurance company is still investigating and waiting for pics of the scene and his friends statement. I was told by his insurance company (USAA) that witnesses not listed on the police report could not be used, but his friend is not on the police report and they are waiting for her statement. NC State Highway Patrol responded to the scene and the driver was cited for failure to yield the right of way. The driver was apologetic and admitted several times around a number of people that he must have blanked out or was daydreaming from the frustration of the school bus. USAA is saying that they need to make sure that my daughter was not 1% at fault, meaning speeding perhaps. The officer estimated her speed at impact at around 40 mph and the speed limit is 55mph. She hit the drivers back tire of his Jeep Wrangler (small truck) causing him to rest in a small trench or ditch ion the side of the attempted driveway. The front passenger side above the front tire and the front by the headlight is damaged on her car. She tried to avoid him, protect her younger sister (13) and avoid veering to much left in fear of hitting the school bus. My girls were terrified when I arrived 15 minutes after the accident. USAA stated that she may have had time to instanly stop, but she tried everything that she could do. In my opinion, she should have never been put into that situation. USAA is saying that points of contact are off, but my insurance agent said that she hit the back tire because a Jeep Wrangler is only 5 ft long and he was not towing a boat or driving a common sized vehicle. Plus the driver admitted to pushing down on the accelerator when he realized what was happening. I just need to have someones advice on this matter before hiring a lawyer. Thank you.""
