After they fell into bed together, Steve woke up afraid that they'd done something they won't be able to take back, even though Danny was everything he'd wanted for years. He was scared Danny was going to regret it, and he decided to sneak out before he woke up so they could pretend nothing happened. Having already put his shirt back on, he couldn't resist looking back at Danny, watching him stretch sleepily, before it was too late Danny woke up.
When putting it like that, it seemed ridiculous, how could he slink away in the middle of the night as if they did something wrong when nothing ever felt more right?
Danny knew Steve well enough to know it was just his instinct to flee when things got real, leave them before they leave you, that sort of thing. He knew he had to grab onto Steve and not let him go for Steve to know he was wanted. He wasn't about to let him slip away when they finally got to this point.
Steve couldn't help but smile, Danny knew him so well. Knew him and accepted him and wanted him to stay. He was being stupid, they would be alright as long as they are together they will figure things out.
As Steve shrugged out of his shirt and wrapped himself around Danny's body again, Danny murmured 'There, isn't this better? Don't forget you promised me morning sex, you better be up to task'. Steve chuckled as he kissed his cheek softly. 'Anything for you, sunshine'.

I wasn't able to actually make the h50 big bang this year, but I am still working on the story I started for it! It's a finale fix-it road-trip sort of thing. The writing is going slower than I'd like because I'm picking up extra hours at work, but I thought I'd share a (very unedited) snippet here for y'all!
“So uh,” Danny started, not looking at Steve, “okay. Look.” He looked up finally to find Steve staring at him, beer half-raised, both eyebrows making a hilarious bid for his hairline. “I know you’re planning on leaving, right? Taking some you-time or whatever-”
“Danny-”
“No, shut up, lemme finish,” Danny ordered, waving one hand, much to Steve’s apparent amusement. “So, I’m just spit-balling here, okay, like do not feel pressured, I am not trying to pressure you, but uh, I mean, I’m not going back to work for a few weeks, and the kids won’t be here for the summer, so I was thinking maybe-”
“Maybe?”
“You’re gonna make me ask?”
“I kind of wanna make you ask.”
Danny made a face at him and then sighed, drawing his hands down over his own face. “Fine. Steven, can I come with you?”
Steve grinned, bright and happy at him. “Thought you’d never ask.”
Danny stared, unimpressed. “Thought I’d never ask. Are you kidding me? Were you gonna ask? Or were you gonna just swan off into the sunset without me? What if I’d talked myself out of it, huh? Or Grace hadn’t put the idea in my head in the first place?”
“I knew you’d get there eventually, Danno,” Steve shrugged. “But for the record, no, I wouldn’t have just left.” He made a face. “I’d have packed you a bag and dragged you along.”
He laughed at Danny’s muttered obscenities, and his smile didn’t fade even when Danny leveled a mock glare on him. “Where we goin’ anyway, huh? Do you even know? Were you just gonna hop on a random plane, Steven?”
“Well, Daniel, I figured we might go to San Francisco and visit Chin; I hear Kono might be there. After that…,” he dimmed a little there, some of that lost expression making its way back. Danny hated that he’d had even a part in putting it there.
“We’ll figure it out, babe,” he offered, nudging Steve’s shoulder with his own. “I’ve always wanted to visit the Grand Canyon.”

Having secured Danny’s agreement to marry him, Steve doesn’t hesitate to continue his offensive the next day, taking advantage of Danny’s surprise to claim even more territory. They’re at the International Market Place, looking into a string of robberies that are technically a bit below 5-0’s official mandate. Still, Steve doesn’t mind taking the case off HPD’s hands while they’re between major cases. Kono and Chin are also doing some canvassing while Steve and Danny visit the stores on level one.
The Martin and MacArthur store has a display in the window that catches Steve’s eye. It’s a beautiful display of jewelry incorporating koa—a native Hawaiian wood, a type of acacia.
“Babe,” Danny growls, the back of his hand batting at Steve’s chest as he tries to get Steve’s attention. “What are you looking at?”

But she suggested taking up a hobby to decompress and I mean, trying something new can be fun,” Steve says casually. “Plus, we wouldn’t want your money to go to waste, right?”
“Color me surprised,” Danny says, tone dripping with sarcasm. “I can’t believe the day has come when you finally listen to me on something. But still, I have to ask, why knitting?”

A snippet for you all, since I have nothing else going on today:
He startled when the knock sounded on the door. A faint tap tap, unfamiliar in the hesitance. He wasn’t expecting to open the door to Danny standing on the other side, tie askew, eyes red, looking like he had nowhere else to go but wasn’t entirely sure either how he’d gotten where he was or if he was welcome. Steve would have to make sure he knew, in the future, that he was always welcome, wherever Steve was.
This is a sort of coda to Loa Aloha, wherein I asked myself what if Danny had gone to Steve’s at the end instead of Rachel’s. I haven’t done Steve POV in literally 10 years, so it’s going a little slow. But I’m having fun writing it!

i know, about time. Blame the job change and holiday family obligations.

Fic summary:
When one family seems lost another comes back from the past. But does Buck want to return to the past or live in the present? And does his present lead to a future he wants? Only he can answer these questions but Steve at least will be there to support him.
Chapter summary:
Steve finds out about Danny’s conversation with Sang Min before getting the wind knocked out of his sails by an unexpected visitor. Danny takes care of Steve and gathers actionable proof. Buck storms Wo Fat’s lair and rescues an Eddie that may or may not need rescuing (he’s no damsel in distress).

“Hey! I don’t need a babysitter. I’m a detective, Babe, and this is what detectives do—they get leads!”
Steve tries to breathe in and out through his nose, but he’s still stuck on the fact that Danny had a clandestine meeting with Sang Min earlier night and hadn’t told Steve about it. “Sang Min is dangerous. He’s working with Wo Fat!”
“I know,” Danny snaps, hair ruffled from running his hands through it when he’s stressed and hasn’t slept, the gel losing its hold. “And for what it’s worth, he’s sorry about it.”
“Oh, he’s sorry about it? Well, then, that makes it alright, doesn’t it? He’s not going to kidnap you and put you in the same cell next to Kono or Diaz—“
“Enough!” Buck barks, interrupting the argument. The kid is hugging himself tight, his biceps about ready to tear through his t-shirt, and he’s rocking on his heels in anxiety, but his attention is locked on Danny. “What did Sang Min have to say?”
“He is willing to trade the location of where Wo Fat’s keeping Kono and Eddie in exchange for leniency.”
“Leniency?” Steve is so mad he’s spitting.

Thank you, babe @stephmcx because of your great fic rec list I noticed this amazing Fic Rec Day! I'm not often on Tumblr anymore scrolling and discovering interesting things and I miss the interaction with other fandom folks. And here you are, posting a great fic rec list of the most epic OTP ever: Steve and Danny.
I have my McDanno 'go-to' fics I love dearly but for this list I put together a different number of McDanno stories from my bookmarks. I hope some of you haven't read them already. Maybe there's a chance you find an unknown great McDanno story. All of my recommanded stories always act like a large safety net of love I let myself fall into when I need those special, unique, and most magic McDanno vibes.

put a version of the book emoji in my inbox, and i'll explain the plot of a fanfic that i haven't written, but i want to write!
okay is this a very original idea? no it is not but i haven't been able to get rid of the idea, so i should actually very much get around to writing it
this is all because i genuinely love the idea of things happening in bars, and i don't think we have even close to enough bar!aus for, well, anything
ok but hear me out and if you think this sounds too much like cheers then oops
[ mentions injuries, alcoholism ]
steve is still a former navy seal, but due to a traumatic brain injury and anxiety, he gets a medical discharge and is shipped back to hawaii, his title then being former navy seal. he copes poorly, turns to alcohol and copes even more poorly, and kind of on a whim, ends up buying a bar. he eventually gets help, gets clean, but holds onto the bar, and to this day he still has the bottle cap from the last bottle of beer he drank (it's a poor, worn-out longboard bottle cap)
danny never became law enforcement. instead, he kept on with the baseball track, and became the hero of major league baseball, having come through the academy of the new jersey jackals, before being signed by the yankees, nicknamed "mayday" because whenever he started on the bench, he'd come on and save the day at the mayday signal. however, a rough episode on the field and three acl surgeries later, he's had to put his career on the shelf, and has turned to working with papers about sports, specialising in baseball (naturally).
when they start a baseball history series, he is sent to hawaii on a mission to write an in-depth article about the hawaii islanders, a former hawaiian baseball team that hasn't been active since 1987, and after meeting one of the old coaches at this bar, he decides to sit there and write down elements of his article every night (though it takes him about a week to realise that maybe he's returning to the bar to keep the ruggedly handsome bartender company, more than he's interested in actually writing the article)
i quickly put together a little scene here:
"what's the story here, new guy?" steve asked, a tea towel slung over his shoulder as he sorted the clean glasses back onto the right shelves.
danny huffed, sinking down on the uncomfortable bar stool that somehow had become his over the past couple of days. "a thirsty guy walks into a bar. you finish it, barkeep."
"take it your luck with the islanders' coaches are out, then?" steve chuckled, flicking the tap on the hanalei ipa as he filled a glass, placing it in front of danny with a thud. "on the house, mayday. and do know my offer to pull some strings around here still stands."
"it's my article."
"i'm just offering to help." steve raised his hands in surrender, shrugging down the tea towel to wipe some droplets of beer from the polished surface of the bar. "when all comes to it, it's your choice."
danny chewed on the inside of his lip for a moment, hand coming to wrap itself around the cool glass, the dew causing his fingertips to get slippery. "alright, you're on. what can you help me with?"

i've seen a fair share of fic dealing with amnesia!steve but what about amnesia!danny? i just accidentally wrote this half headcanon-half fic
what if after the adrenaline runs out he actually collapses in steve's arms in 4x19 and when he wakes up the last and only thing he remembers is steve and him confessing their love for each other.
naturally with steve holding a constant vigil by his bedside and being his emergency contact and the one in whose care they release him to after the hospital stay and everyone calling them partners, he assumes they are together together and because of how they are with each other no one notices that that's the conclusion he came to for a while.
when danny first woke up, smiled flirtatiously at steve and said 'hey gorgeous' steve just laughed in relief with barely contained tears and made a crack about danny being really out of it.
then when it turned out danny has temporary amnesia while steve seems to be the only one he feels safe and familiar with, it's only natural that he took danny home after they released him from the hospital. a little selfish part of steve enjoyed that his connection to danny was stronger than melissa's which meant he got to have danny for himself but the bigger part of him just missed his best friend.
it doesn't help that amnesiac!danny dialed up his natural flirtatiousness but steve just explains it away as danny not having his usual inhibitions in check. the doctor said it was important to bring danny home and surround him with comfort and familiarity to speed up his recovery so everything falls away in the face of that.
the one thing that knocks steve off his rocker is when danny comes downstairs one morning and greets him with a peck on the lips before making a beeline for the coffeepot.
'what's wrong?' he asks, concerned at steve's dead stupor.
'why did you just do that?'
'what? kiss my boyfriend? is that not usually how i greet you in the morning? i know you've been careful with me because you didn't want to violate my agency or whatever but this whole physical distance thing isn't exactly going to help us reconnect as a couple.'
as realization hits, steve shakes his head with a sad chuckle, he's used to other people assuming they are a couple but it hurts extra that as an outsider even danny came to that conclusion, just steve's luck that the only circumstances that danny considers that possibility is when he's not himself.
it's danny's turn to be confused. he was so sure. 'but...but... everyone says we are always together and are partners wink-wink, i practically live at your house. plus, i've seen the way you look at me, i know I'm attracted to you and clearly you feel the same, not to mention my clearest memory is you telling me you love me and me returning the sentiment'.
'i don't know what to tell you, danny. we are not a couple.' '
'and why not?'
'because you don't feel that way about me.' steve's voice breaks at the end of that sentence.
danny puts his hand over steve's heart 'except I do, babe.'
steve shakes his head 'you don't mean that, you are not yourself right now. you are just confused'.
'i may be confused about most of things in my life right now, but not my feelings for you. our connection is the only thing that feels real right now, and from the way you don't deny it, i know you feel it too, so what's stopping you?'
'i can't take advantage of you, i care about you too much to do that. please don't look at me like that, I'm not rejecting you.'
danny sniffs 'sure feels like rejection to me.'
as he turns to leave steve grabs his arm 'can we please revisit this topic after you have your memories back?'
'what if they never do?? you just don't want me without them, admit it.'
steve presses their foreheads together 'oh, danny, no, i will always want you. i just need this to be real, please?'

the first time danny yells at steve about being a reckless idiot steve knows his danny is back. having a willing and affectionate danny in close proximity and not being able to do anything about it was torture, but not having the partner he knows and loves by his side was so much worse.
'i love you'
danny stops mid rant 'i love you, too'
'despite knowing me so well? really?'
danny puts his arms around steve's neck 'yes. because i know you, it's real.'
and then they kiss, finally. for real.
