Gwenno - An Stevel Nowydh/”The New Room” (from Tresor) Checking out the Gwenno album Tresor again. Great music with the lyrics in Cornish. You can watch this video on YouTube with the English translated lyrics in the info area. Love the retro vibe of this one (and her voice is so awesome). Definitely a consideration for my top albums this year.

Gwenno – Tresor
Drugi krążek Gwenno Mererid Saunders to moje pierwsze spotkanie z muzyką walijskiej artystki piszącej swoje płyty w języku kornijskim. Album kupił mnie swoim openerem – “An Stevel Nowydh” (ang. “The New Room”) to zdecydowanie najlepsze rozpoczęcie płyty tego kwartału. Przebojowość wraca głównie w “N.Y.C.A.W.” i “Keltek”. Solidna płyta z ciekawym przesłaniem i niebanalnymi aranżami. Warto dać szansę chociaż tym wyżej wymienionym perełkom.

3 July 2022: Tresor, Gwenno. (Heavenly/PIAS, 2022)
I learned of Gwenno Saunders when she was part of the kitschy, high-concept British group The Pipettes, modeled after ’50s/’60s girl-group vocal acts. The original 2006 UK version of their debut We Are the Pipettes was a favorite of mine from the time (the 2007 US/Canada edition bungled it, changing the track list and cover art). A casual observer of The Pipettes could understandably take them for a novelty act, and in some ways they were. When the group disbanded, Gwenno having been the sole constant across their two studio albums (the second, 2010′s Earth vs. The Pipettes having given very diminishing returns), I was pleasantly surprised to see her turn to serious record-making and away from the levity of her previous project.
Her first solo album (after four EPs), 2014′s Y Dydd Olaf was sung entirely in Saunders’s native Welsh. For its follow-up Le Kov (2018), she sang entirely in Cornish, a language originally spoken in the far southwest of England that died out in the late 18th century. A revival of the language began in the early 20th century, and a small number of people do now speak Cornish as their first language; Gwenno’s father spoke Cornish at home and since birth she has been a speaker of both Welsh and Cornish. She has said her decision to record her last two albums in Cornish was sparked by the British government’s 2016 resolution to cut funding for advancement of the Cornish language. Gwenno’s music has contributed significantly to subsequent language-revival efforts; the Cornish Language Board reported that Le Kov contributed to a 15% increase in the number of people taking Cornish language exams in 2018 (see an article here). Tresor is entirely in Cornish but for one song in Welsh, “N.Y.C.A.W.,” which stands for “Wales is not for sale.”

Here is the 12″ x 24″ fold-out insert, which the hyper sticker calls a “pull out poster.” It contains the lyrics to the album.

This is the first of four posts detailing purchases I made at my final visit to the longtime Wisconsin music chain The Exclusive Company. My last trip was to the Milwaukee location. The chain closed after 66 years due to the November 2021 death of owner James Giombetti (known as “Mr. G” to longtime customers) and his family’s unwillingness to maintain the business in his absence. I’ve visited Exclusive Company stores in Milwaukee, Greenfield, and Madison (home to two locations, which closed in 2009 and 2012, respectively), and multiple other Wisconsin cities were home to their outlets: Janesville, Green Bay, Appleton, Oshkosh, and West Bend. The chain never resurfaced in Madison, but the other seven towns’ stores remained in business until recent months. Some of the stores were successfully bought out by employees and have reopened under other names: the Milwaukee location closed in July, shortly after my visit, and has since reopened as Lilliput Records; the Greenfield location, another Exclusive Company outlet I liked to visit, has reopened as Volta Records.

Gwenno – Treasure | UNCUT
Gwenno – Treasure | UNCUT
“If we opened up people, we would find landscapes,” said the French director Agnes Varda in 2009. Varda is one of many artists, musicians and filmmakers around the world who have inspired Treasurethe Cornish-speaking Welsh psychonaut’s third album Gwenno Saunders — and this quote is especially beloved of a musician who is dedicated to mapping the intersection of land, heritage, identity and…

"Do you want a crown upon your head and a woman at your feet? / Do I want to fill a room with all of my will and feel ashamed?"
Aus dem Album hatte Gwenno bereits im Vorfeld die Songs "An Stevel Nowydh" und "Men An Toll" veröffentlicht.

This is from my favourite album of the year ‘Le Kov’ by Gwenno. It is entirely in Cornish and it’s just lovely. This song is called ‘Eus Keus?’ which translates as “Is there cheese?”. Thus the picture of Gwenno holding cheese with druid owls.

Life´s too short for weird music - Tagesempfehlung 21.03.2022
Gwenno / An Stevel Nowydh
