"but there's no point in learning Irish is a dead lang-" sHUT UP SHUT UP SHUT UP.
there IS a point. there IS a reason. Irish might be a dead language TO YOU but im gonna pull that motherfucker screaming and crying out of its "grave" by the ankles. if Irish is a dead language then i'm a necromancer (or necrophiliac depending on your outlook on life and opinions.)
there IS a point. im learning Irish because no one in my family, barr from like one of my cousins, and a few distant relatives even have their cúpla focail. (whether they were given the award or they gen only know a few words). my mum and dad barely know any irish. my dad wasnt even really ALLOWED to learn irish. (more it was geniunely discouraged by my granny bc 1970s/80s and early 90s northern ireland was not a fun place).
im learning irish because its my CULTURE. its MY language, ITS MINE, not to rip off my big man Ruairí Ó Báille (granted is leatsa í means its yours but who cares about details) back on topic, it connects me to MY history. everyone calls my granda the irish version of his name, we use anglisized irish words ALL THE TIME. even if you arent learning irish. its still alive in place names. (e.g Belfast, Béal Feirste, Derry, Doire)
irish isnt even dead. it still exists whether you want to acknowledge it or not, we wouldnt have so much protection thingymabobbers trying to preserve it if it was completely dead, yeah its on life support and a long way from getting off it but pROGRESS IS PROGRESS! theres more irish speakers now than a good few years ago
pLUS ITS ONLY GOT LIKE 11 IRREGULARS. ENGLISH HARDLY EVEN, IF EVEN HAS REGULAR VERBS. IT HAS SIMPLISH PRONOUNCIATION (if you actually sit down and learn the spelling/grammar rules. something i need to do more of bc i sound like a dying donkey speaking irish😋) aND ITS REALLY PRETTY OKAY? ITS GOT A COOL EMPHATIC FORM IN ENGLISH YOU JUST USE YOUR TONE TO PUT EMPHASIS ON STUFF.
plus plus. silver and gold fáinnes. what other language in the world has cool little badge pin thingies when you can speak a good enough level of it?
in conclusion; irish is based. Is maith liom bheith ag amharc dónal dána. Ceapaim go bhfuil asal thusa. focáil leat.(was previously 'téigh fuck tú féin, but thats not the best way to say it), Chuaigh mé ar scoil ar a naoi a chlog. Tá mo scoil iontach leadránach.
slán, sláinte, suck my dick you mouldy egg sandwich.

I need a Lovecraftian-style story in which an explorer finds an ancient inscription on a stone monolith, written in a forgotten language, in the antediluvian ruins of a lost city of which only legends formerly spoke.
And then someone translates it, and it turns out to be some king’s plans for an irrigation system.

Dead languages
Danny Phantom fans!
What does ‘Danny can speak dead languages’ actually mean? I've seen it referenced in a number of fic ideas but I’m not sure how far it actually extends. On the assumption that this is a fanon concept, here's a poll.
These options are ordered from least to most restrictive; less restrictive options include more restrictive ones. Please vote for the least restrictive option you agree with.
For the more restrictive options, if a once-dead language is successfully revived, would Danny cease to be able to speak it?

Learning a “useless language” can be hard.
First off, i’d like to state that i believe no language is truly useless. Not ones people in your country don’t speak, not ones that have a very low amount of speakers, not even ones that died out a thousand years ago. But learning a language that the world (or even just yourself) has deemed useless can be hard.
The lack of resources available for these lesser learnt languages can be annoying especially if it isnt on duolingo or other language learning apps.
The lack of community. I’m attempting to learn romanes because my mother is romani but she doesnt speak it and its a closed language (might talk about that in a later post)
The lack of motive. Yes, i want to learn my ancestors/families languages but its hard. It’s not like i’ll get to speak it with anyone.
But sometimes its not so hard. Sometimes you get this sprinkle of hope- a reward that makes you want to push on. For myself, that’ll be talking to my irish friend A as gaeilge. We are both chugging through the duolingo course and sometimes we might attempt to have a little natter in irish and for a moment i’ll feel like i’m not wasting my time. i’m doing something worthwhile.
Learning a useless language can be hard, but the thought of giving up is worse.
Learning a useless language can’t be hard because in my eyes there are no useless languages.

Today in Latin, everyone was talking when we weren’t supposed to, and my teacher said ‘I don’t think we need to use our mouths the turn a page’ and then she looked directly at me and said ‘Don’t try it’.
Later on, she was going to get something from her office and as she left she said ‘Please don’t set anything on fire, but if you do, record it.’ And so everyone in my class was plundering their blazers looking for anything that could start a fire. 10/10. I like my Latin teacher.

Last night I dreamed I was making a list of all the possible uses for chickpeas because I had too many and then at some point I was like "as a family nickname if you're a roman orator BADA BOOM" and was so disappointed no one else got the joke. So basically highly accurate to my waking life

Hi! For the WIP rec week, i’d like to recommend this story. WWX is cursed and turned into a child, leaving the Wens and the Burial Mounds unguarded. LWJ comes to visit and has to deal with the situation. Have a great week! @immoralq

Summary: “Second young master Lan! Young master Wei was turned into a child, the one that you saw just now. It’s a spell or a curse, we don’t know! And—” Wen Ning stops talking, because his sister has him by the ear. - Deep in the Burial Mounds, the small, struggling Qishan Wen sect has a problem. A very small problem.

Do you ever get the urge to study a certain language and then realise it's not all cool grammar stuff, and you actually have to learn words?

hey there! if you read my intro post, you should know that I am learning latin and if you are a person living in the 21st century, you should know that latin isn't exactly a common language. sure, it is sometimes described as a dead language, but doctors study corpses to learn about humans, doesn't it make sense to study a 'dead' language to learn about human culture? anyways to make my language learning more... fulfilling, i've decided to teach you all some latin phrases/words that are indirectly useful! (don't worry, I won't go over too much grammar for now :)
cogito ergo sum. : I think therefore I am
explanation:
cogito we can separate the term cognito into two sections: cogit-o. 'cogit' refers to 'think', and 'o' refers to 'I' (this is called person endings for a verb, 'o' refers to first person singular 'I')
ergo simply refers to 'therefore' or 'consequently' (there isn't much grammar in this haha
sum is like the verb to be. it refers to I am. (sum refers to both 'I' and 'am'! not just am

friendly linguistics reminder that learning a language and not then like. using it frequently and teaching your kids (if you have them) that language and the culture that comes along with it, you aren’t actually doing much of anything to ‘save’ a dying language or dialect. there’s a reason linguists seek out native speakers, especially monolingual ones, and not someone who learned it secondary to their primary language.
it’s the same principle as primary & secondary sources in historical research. a secondary source is never going to be a primary source. it’s useful, yes; but if, say, a colonial power went through and destroyed all of a culture’s artifacts, a sketch one of them made of an object is never going to be the same as the now destroyed original.
dying languages aren’t dying because people don’t care, they’re dying because current or historical forces have decided they needed to be destroyed.
languages aren’t just their words, they’re their speakers. they’re the culture it was born out of. they’re the physical places their words sought to describe.

In fics where danny can automatically speak dead languages, does enough people knowing the language stop it being a dead language?
If danny who can converse with the ghosts of dead kryptonians, travels back in time to krypton could he lose the automatic translation of the language?
I think (ancient) Hebrew(?) became basically a dead language until a person rebuilt the language from the ground up and taught it to people (first and foremost their child).
I know welsh almost became extinct until a Brit irritated a welsh person so much the entire group relearned welsh out of spite.
I'm just imagining danny having to go on time travel missions with JL members and losing the ability to speak languages as they travel through certain 'timezones'
