Drugi krążek Gwenno Mererid Saunders to moje pierwsze spotkanie z muzyką walijskiej artystki piszącej swoje płyty w języku kornijskim. Album kupił mnie swoim openerem – “An Stevel Nowydh” (ang. “The New Room”) to zdecydowanie najlepsze rozpoczęcie płyty tego kwartału. “Drzwi są otwarte / Popołudniowy cień pada na podłogę / Powiew z okna / Jestem tutaj”. I dalej: “Czy kompletny brak znaczenia jest nieodzowną częścią istnienia?”. Cudowne jest to, że dosadność tych słów jest w stanie poczuć każdy – nie tylko te niespełna kilkaset osób, które aktualnie biegle włada celtyckim językiem wywodzącym się z terenów Kornwalii. Fala znajomego vintage-popowego brzmienia wypełniająca słuchawki nieopisanym spokojem i przestrzenią. Uczucie to przeplatane jest bardziej snującymi się rytmami, zakrawającymi o wpływy mistyczne czy etniczne. Przebojowość wraca głównie w “N.Y.C.A.W.” i “Keltek”. Solidna płyta z ciekawym przesłaniem i niebanalnymi aranżami. Warto dać szansę chociaż tym wyżej wymienionym perełkom.

Gwenno — Tresor (Heavenly)
Tresor by Gwenno
Tresor is the third album by Welsh artist Gwenno, sung mostly in Cornish. It feels like a natural continuation of the sound of 2018’s excellent Le Kov, while also reflecting a more subdued and insular palette of sounds that’s in-keeping with the realities of living through a pandemic. Not that Tresor is your typical lockdown record; its title translates to “treasure,” which is acknowledgment of the fact that Gwenno became a mother during its creation. Though her melodic sensibilities are as strident as before, there’s a softer focus to Tresor’s aesthetic, a dreamier cast to its electronic folk-pop.
Opener “An Stevel Nowydh” is an excellent example of Gwenno’s craft, indebted in part to the retro-futurist sound of bands such as Broadcast. The production here is particularly striking, with a sense of space and depth in the music that’s eerily transportive. Ghostly voices meld with chiming guitars and vibraphone to create something simultaneously otherworldly and gently groovy. On “Anima” there’s a lovely, lilting quality to the vocal melody and the octave leaps in the bass, plus an earworm of a chorus. The vibraphone of the title track has a spy movie shimmer, underpinned by a sparse, crisp rhythm section. “N.Y.C.AW.” reaches a winning climax of chiming electric guitar and backing vocals that seem to be singing my name, “Tim Clarke” — an uncanny feeling when you’re listening to the album on headphones at night…
During the verses of “N.Y.C.AW.” and “Ardamm,” Gwenno’s vocals are almost spoken word in feel, laid down over repetitive, motorik backing. Instrumentals “Men An Toll” and “Keltek” take an opposite approach, their sounds drifting and insinuating rather than insisting. There’s a distinct Boards of Canada flavor to the synths in the intro of “Tonnow,” then the track veers off into a hypnotic, minimal direction foregrounding drum machine and acoustic guitar. The BoC influence is also apparent in the synths of closer “Porth Ia,” while the rhythm section lends a swinging 1960s lounge vibe. Then, in the album’s closing moments, there’s a field recording of a tolling bell — an ambiguous way to roll credits on a colorful, evocative dream-pop record.

Gwenno / An Stevel Nowydh
Da ist der erste Vorbote des dritten Albums von Gwenno – An Stevel Nowyth. Gwenno Saunders Sängerin in den Nullern bei den wunderbaren Pipettes setzt seit ihrem zweiten Soloalbum Le Kov (2018 auf Lyriks in Walisisch (einer Unterart des Gälischen). Und wie bereits kürzlich bei Adwaith ausgeführt: erstmal an das latent kehlige und immer etwas aus der Tonspur wirkende Gälisch gewöhnt, ist an der Musik von Gwenno überhaupt nichts auszusetzen. Bin sehr gespannt auf das neue Album Tresor (gälisch für Schatz). Und auch wenn ich Ihnen keine vollständige Übersetzung liefern kann – leider liegt mein Gälisch Kurs an der Volkshochschule mittlerweile fast 30 Jahre zurück – An Stevel Nowydh steht für The new room – sinngemäß das sich wiederfinden an einem völlig neuen und ungewohnten Ort.

In "Tresor" geht es um die bewussten Entscheidungen, die wir haben, um entweder einen positiven oder negativen Einfluss auf unsere Umwelt auszuüben, während Gwenno zudem die Herausforderungen und Hürden für Empowerment anprangert. "Do you want a crown upon your head and a woman at your feet? / Do I want to fill a room with all of my will and feel ashamed?"
Aus dem Album hatte Gwenno bereits im Vorfeld die Songs "An Stevel Nowydh" und "Men An Toll" veröffentlicht.

[Album+Video] Gwenno mit neuem Album “Tresor”!
Die walisische Musikerin Gwenno kündigt ihr drittes Album “Tresor” für den 01. Juli über Heavenly Recordings an und präsentiert mit “An Stevel Nowydeh“ die erste Single sowie den Opener des Albums.
Mit beinahe mystischer Energie wabert „An Stevel Nowydeh“ zwischen Pop, Folk und leichten Psych-Pop Elementen. Der Sound erinnert an die ebenfalls walisische Musikerin Cate Le Bon und ist, genauso wie das Album, fast komplett auf Kornisch gesungen – einer Sprache zwischen dem Walisischen und dem Bretonischen.

Über den Track sagt Gwenno: “[It] is a song about finding yourself somewhere entirely new and realising that you’re completely lost, and acknowledging that the only thing to do in an existential crisis is to don your favourite hat and dance!”
Wo die beiden früheren Alben „Y Dydd Olaf“ (2015) und „Le Kov“ (2018) vor allem nach Außen gerichtete Themen behandelten, geht das neue Album „Tresor“ nach innen und blickt auf die weltweite Isolation von Menschen. Es geht um die Wiederentdeckung des eigenen Ichs, des eigenen Körpers nach der Geburt ihres Kindes und dem Spagat zwischen Pflege der eigenen Person und den Menschen um einen herum.
