The coming together of Ted McCarty & Les Paul in the late 1940’s after an initial rejection of Les Paul’s “The Log” a journey of inovation was embarked upon that would change the face of popular music forever.

The Gibson Les Paul has become an icon...a symbol of rebellion. You can’t think of Slash, Jimmy Page, Peter Green and so many others without thinking of a Gibson Les Paul. It’s as much of an extension of them as they it.

After 66 years it is still at the fore front of popular music...it is still ‘the’ guitar that so many players aspire to have in their arsenal. Found in bedrooms and venues around the world...will there ever be a day that a Gibson Les Paul won’t be used as a way to entertain the masses?

The Birth of the Electric Guitar

With the guitar’s popularity blooming [in the early part of the 20th century], it wasn’t long before enterprising inventors, luthiers, and guitar players realized there was only so much volume that could be created with a purely acoustic instrument.

Electric amplification was the answer, and from the 1930s onward, makers began experimenting with materials such as Bakelite and cast aluminum instead of wood. 

In 1931, Rickenbacker’s “Frying Pan” used a pair of horseshoe-shaped magnets as the first electro-magnetic pickup, and a new strand of guitar DNA soon followed.

The pre-war period saw rudimentary attempts at developing these ideas so that guitarists could be heard in the big-band jazz orchestras popular at the time. 

These solutions were mostly confined to traditional Spanish-style or archtop guitars with pickups added. 

Soon after World War II was over, however, there were notable experiments, including Les Paul’s prescient semi-solid Log and Clunker designs, and motorcycle-maker Paul Bigsby’s one-off constructions.

These predated the visual flavor of Fender’s early models, and demand from players in the emerging styles of music led to a rapid evolution of these primitive forerunners of the electric guitar.

Leo Fender and his colleagues harnessed the mass-production techniques of the day, resulting in the ingenious Telecaster, Precision, Stratocaster, and Jazz Bass. 

Gibson’s corresponding introduction of the more traditional Les Paul solidbody began a rivalry that has dominated the electric-guitar industry to this day.
