Grim Apostle (Spiritualist Archetype)
Tumblr media
(art by StuHarrington on DeviantArt)
Ah, the spiritualist class, those shepherds of the dead, but very specifically not undead excepting in one case, because of reasons.
The spiritualist is very similar to the summoner, which is why the two were merged in 2E, but there are some stories that can only be told with the combination of ghostly being and the one they are bound to.
Truly, both the spiritualist and their phantom can come from all walks of life, leading to some odd couples and some interesting concepts… but one walk of life really doesn’t normally lend itself to cultivating such a bond: the nihilistic worshippers of daemons.
After all, daemons are distinguished from other fiends by their desire to devour souls, to snuff out those candles from the cosmos and leave it that much darker. A free-floating soul attached to a binder is surely too tempting a target for them.
Luckily, The Midwives of Death adventure, the final part of the Tyrant’s Grasp AP and the final First Edition product created, had a few final character options in it to round things off, including this option for such dark casters.
Rather than draw upon a wayward soul, these spiritualist bond themselves with a spiritual echo similar to those tapped into by mediums, but manifested in ectoplasmic form like a spiritualist. However, it is the nature of these vestiges that give one pause: for they are echoes of the Four Horsemen, the demigod rulers of daemonkind!
This hungry shadow that the mystic bonds with is not forced to reflect only one Horseman, but can shift each day to reflect a new one, giving them variable power sets depending on the day, again hearkening back to the similarities to mediums.
Needless to say, these mystics are every bit as monstrous as their dark patrons, and I can just imagine them feeding souls to their grim phantom as a sacrifice to their daemonic masters, believing, perhaps rightfully that those souls end up on the plates of the Horsemen themselves. They best take care though, for these phantoms prove just as cruel and hungry as the daemons they resemble, taking a bit of their “master” with them when banished.
Regardless, the result is a ghostly master/servant duo with a nasty set of powers and a sinister relationship.
As a reflection of the Four Horsemen, the phantoms of a grim apostle draw upon foci based on those entities, which they can change each day. However, their hunger and malevolence claws even at their own masters, and when the spirit is sent hurtling away from the material world by violence, they dig metaphysical claws into their master, risking taking them with them.
Which isn’t to say that they are entirely a liability. The spiritualist’s soul belongs to them, after all, and they will brook no other claimants, warding their host against death magic and magic that would displace or ensnare their soul, at least while cohabitating their body.
The four foci that these mystics and their phantoms have available are as follows. Firstly, there is Death, when they draw upon Charon. Such phantoms appear as shapeless, cowl-laden figures. They seem to embody death in general rather than Charon’s inevitability, but they gain some fancy abilities regardless. The apostle, for one, marks foes for death with their attacks, making the phantom’s attacks more potent against them. The phantom also develops an aura which impedes mundane and magical healing as well. Furthermore, they also instinctively learn techniques to quickly follow foes that try to escape their grasp. Finally, they learn a killing word to slay foes.
Second up is Famine, the purview of Trelmarixian, which gives the phantom a jackal-like visage. Their attacks are particularly dexterous, and take the form of ravenous bites. Their aura weakens foes with the pangs of starvation, they can unleash a horrific magical howl of anguish that weakens nearby foes, and they can even briefly swallow foes whole.
Apollyon’s domain is Pestilence, and the phantoms gain a ram skull cranium in this form. Their strikes weaken foes as if suffering illness, they surround themselves with phantasmal biting flies that devour foes, they can deliver disease with a touch, and finally, their strikes can make a foe suddenly very contagious, spreading their suffering to others.
Finally, we have War, the position held by Szuriel, and these phantoms resemble his form as an eyeless angel with black wings. These phantoms are strong, rather than agile, and their strikes aim for the most painful and damage-causing areas of the body. Their aura whips allies and foes alike into a frenzy of aggression, and their strikes heal themselves. Finally, Their fury becomes so great that any effect that would slow down or cause them to hesitate in their assault no longer have any effect.
With four powerful combat-focused foci to choose from, this archetype can be pretty good for tailoring your power set to the day, but you can also narrow your focus to one or two if you so choose. It really depends upon you. Just keep in mind the drawback that you can be dealt heavy damage with no way to resist it if your phantom goes down. With that in mind, perhaps building with some survivability in mind would be good.
Now, aside from villain campaigns, this archetype sits squarely in the “mostly for NPCs” category, but the fact they can vary up the powers and fighting strategy of their phantom per encounter means that this archetype works best for a recurring villain rather than a one-off foe. This can be a fun way to surprise the heroes that have prepared for the villain’s previous strategy.
Another interesting note: this archetype draws upon the current holders of the positions of the Horsemen. If you plan a game set in a different setting or time period, might those Horsemen be different? Could be worth homebrewing.
The party has been invited to the manor of a local noble for a gala, but when they arrive, they find the place curiously quiet. Once inside, they find the place overrun with monsters evoking rot and disease, including a whole colony of verduous oozes. It seems a cult of the Rotten One crashed the party before they arrived, led by their half-mad leader and their phantasmal advisor which looks suspiciously similar to depictions of the dark demigod.
After losing a beloved companion, the formerly ascetic astomoi Viius found that he could not return to his former life, taking on a more and more nihilistic worldview, until one day he was contacted by a shape in the dark, offering him the power to help end the world that lacked any such meaning.
The embodiment of War has an iron grip on the nation of Merkas, his devotees whipping the country up into a frenzy of jingoism and fascism, turning their blades upon neighbors for any reason at all, be it greed for resources, preemptive violence against imagined threats, and of course, bigotry against those unlike themselves. High in their rankings are speakers of War, who call upon translucent visions of their master, interpreting his will.

A pair of marigolds are provided soon after, which Barty doesn’t wear, and Evan is almost inclined to offer a helping hand, shocked at how little protest Barty gives him.
He gives him none. With the compliance of an automated coffee machine, Barty steps up on the ladder and starts scrubbing the walls above the bathroom sink with vigor, eyebrows drawn down and lips pinched together.
Evan stands, watches him do so, observing him with clinical attentiveness – his eyes caressing over Barty’s every bump and curve; the sharp elbows, the hills of his hips, dipping into slackened black jeans, loose enough to reveal heart-patterned boxers. The slope of his back, jostling back and forth with each swipe of the sponge, accompanied by the muffled sound of shallow breathing, an occasional sniff. The skin on his fine wrist, the veins pulsating beneath with hot, slick blood, black with lack of oxygen, crimson when exposed to the light. It makes Evan’s hands tremble, iron grip beginning to slip on his resolve, trying to put together the gloppy, scattered gray matter of his mind back together in a panic.
Barty looks down at him. “Hey blondie, you got any drugs? My Vyvanse is wearing off.”
Evan’s mind is suddenly spun wildly out of orbit, smacking on the wall. “Uh–”
“Can I look in here?” Barty asks him, already pulling the cabinet open.
“Stop!” Evan shouts, slamming it shut.
Barty just laughs, nearly falls off the ladder.
Evan huffs, raking a hand through his hair. “You’re going to fall, Barty,” he berates, strutting to the corner of the living room where he keeps his drug paraphernalia. “Barty. What kind of a Jesus apostle’s name is that?”
Barty laughs again, throwing his head back and swaying back a little. “You’re funny. Pretty and funny,” he tells him pervertedly, pressing the sponge into the wall and scrubbing. “It’s not my name, not really. It’s my dad’s. You wouldn’t believe my full name even if I told you.”
Evan stares at him for a few seconds, hums, then flicks the lighter to the bong’s bowl, inhales. It bubbles between them, milky smoke curling up the straight tube, between Evan’s lips.
It’s a green glass bong, and the color of it reminds him of Barty’s.
Chromium.
It’s the color on the wheel opposite to crimson, and Evan wonders if he’ll ever get to see that color. Maybe on his floor, like an inkspill in the form of something divine; the essence of Barty and the vibrance of his innards, twisted and warped around each other, creating a hue of dacre, shiny, marooned plum, perhaps.
Coagulated, fleshy matter and bits of weed, scattered in all the cracks in his floorboards, pouring into the bathroom, tainting the linoleum.
What happens when bleach and blood mix? Does it create something that wasn’t there before? What does it feel like to slather your hands in it, to touch the inside of someone?
Does Barty have an inside?
From above him, Barty’s resonant voice cuts through his aching mind. “Why did you let me in here?” He smirks. “Don’t you know about me?”
Evan blinks, remnants of smoke falling from his lips. “Well, why did you follow me? Don’t you know about me?”
“Yeah, I know about you,” Barty says around another cheeky smile, tongue between his teeth. “I told you. I see you, you know, around campus.”
Evan narrows his eyes. “You see me?”
Barty nods, wipes at his leaking nose. “Around campus. You’re always listening to that music, looking like you’re having prophetic visions. It’s pretty alluring. Damn, this bleach is–”
“Are you feeling faint? Dizzy?” Evan asks him, maybe a bit too enthusiastically. He quickly clears his throat, pushes a strand of hair out of his eyes with his index finger. “You should– take a break. Sit down for a moment,” he adds apprehensively.
Stalling. He’s stalling. What exactly is he stalling? Is he really going to hurt this person? Does he really want to go through with this?
Evan’s eyes flit to the various objects in the apartment.
Bleach to scrub the blood. Bong to diffuse the tremors. The Persian carpet he bought at an auction. He would have to remove it from the living room. Is the bathtub big enough for Barty’s body? He could fold him. Does he have enough hydrofluoric acid left? What would he use? One of Pandora’s expensive Japanese stainless steel knives?
Evan looks away from his unholiness. “Well, I don’t know about you. Never seen you before in my life. Why should I know about you, anyway?”
Barty scoffs, a dismissal of Evan’s tone, canines showing through a smug grin. “Okay, I’ll sit.”
When Barty perches himself on the ladder, half-sitting on the third step with his legs stretched out, there’s a moment when their eyes meet.
Evan notes that Barty doesn’t look away, doesn’t flinch. His face twitches, eyebrow raising just slightly.
He’s so long. Long and languid, and Evan thinks maybe Barty’s the panther now, the way he’s looking at him like he wants to push him up face-first against the wall.
Barty tucks his bottom lip into his teeth, feet resting on either side of Evan’s as he stands stiffly in front of him, bong in hand.
And then something absolutely earth shattering happens.
Barty’s foot wiggles, brushing the inside of Evan’s foot arch, sock fabric rubbing on sock fabric.
The feel of it makes Evan’s throat dry up, his guts clench. He wants to lean away, get that heat emanating from Barty’s body far, far away from him. Wants to lock him up in a basement, throw away the key, leave him there to beg and cry and moan.
Barty gently takes the bong from Evan’s tight grip. “Well, if you want a semblance of truth, blondie, I’m damaged goods.”
Evan raises a brow, watching Barty’s adam’s apple bob with a harsh swallow. “Damaged goods?”
Barty nods, takes a hit from the bong. When he tilts his head back, he blows the smoke into the light, casting a thin veil over their heads. “Yeah,” he croaks, coughing slightly. “I’m shit. But hey, at least I’m me. I’m shit but at least I’m me.”
“Well, we are all just insects groping for something terrible or divine, either way,” Evan tries to reassure him, for some odd reason. He feels compelled to soothe the slight twinge of self-hatred behind Barty’s eyes. “That’s Philip K. Dick.”
Barty coughs into his elbow after another hit. “I think you’re divine,” he says through a cough, eyes watery, rimmed pink.
Evan clenches his teeth. Barty smiles.
Smiles with his sculpted, flushed cheekbones, mouth in a perpetual state of laughter, like it’s all so absurd to him.
Evan turns his eyes away. “You don’t even know me,” he grimaces. “You’re a fool if you think I’m anything close to divine. I’m a wretched person.”
“I like wretched. Wretched’s good,” Barty affirms, reaching out for Evan’s wrist.
His own pulse against Barty’s thumb pad makes him nearly gag.

Footsteps and Fellowship: Tales from the Camino de Santiago
Tumblr media
Once upon a time, in a land not so far away, there existed this pilgrimage route called the Camino de Santiago. It was like Disneyland for medieval Christians, right up there with Rome and Jerusalem. Imagine millions of people from all over the world strapping on their sandals and embarking on a journey for spiritual enlightenment, personal reflection, or just to spice up their Instagram feed with some epic adventure pics.
Legend has it that this guy named James, or as his pals called him, St. James the Great, decided to take a little trip to Spain to spread the good word of Christianity. Now, whether he made it there or not is still a topic for history buffs to argue over, but what we do know is that Spain kinda took a shine to him, thanks to his relics chilling in Santiago de Compostela. And thus, the Camino de Santiago was born—a network of routes that crisscrossed Spain and even spilled over into other parts of Europe.
Tumblr media
But who was this St. James character, you ask? Well, he was your average Galilean fisherman turned apostle, hanging out with Jesus and witnessing all His miracles, like turning water into wine and walking on water. Unfortunately for James, his story ended on a rather grim note when he became the first apostle to bite the dust, courtesy of King Herod Agrippa I. Ouch.
Now, why on earth would Gladys (@gladiatorGlasyl), one of my closest and weirdest friends, and I decide to tackle this medieval pilgrimage? Oh, let's blame it on Gladys and her wild ideas. She was all set to do the Camino in June, and I just had to chime in with, 'Why not April? I could join!' Because, you know, I just couldn't bear the thought of missing out on her adventure. So naturally, she couldn't say no to me hijacking her plans. Bernard was supposed to complete our fabulous trio, but alas, other priorities got in his way. And that's how Gladys and I found ourselves preparing for a totally "planned" journey—not because we're seasoned hikers (far from it), but because we've always had a knack for turning mundane situations into questionable adventures. Plus, trying to sync our leave schedules was a delightful nightmare, but hey, when opportunity knocks, you grab it, right?
Tumblr media
Hence, we settled on the Camino Inglés, the glamorous trek from Ferrol to Santiago de Compostela. Here, blisters became our new best friend, and complaining about sore feet was the main event! So, we strapped on those hiking shoes and got ready for a six-day journey filled with laughter, storytelling, banter, sarcastic quips, and scaring each other—better than any reality TV show.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
As we embarked on an unforgettable journey starting from Ferrol, where anticipation filled the air, we passed through rolling hills, occasional glimpses of farm animals, Gladys bullying the dogs (like dogs everywhere and the diva cats!), and the earthy scent of the countryside—nature's unique fragrance. Amidst the chirping of birds and the gentle rustle of leaves, the footsteps of fellow pilgrims set the rhythm for our adventure.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
As we progressed from Pontedeume to Bruma, we braced ourselves for a challenging ascent. Yet, this climb was akin to ascending nature's staircase to paradise, offering breathtaking vistas at every turn. The route from Bruma to Sigueiro was among the most remarkable walks we had ever experienced, showcasing the grandeur of Mother Earth in all her glory.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The highlight awaited us on the final leg from Sigueiro to Santiago. We pictured ourselves meandering through an enchanted forest, where the ethereal melodies of Celtic (its actually Galician) music seemed to dance on the breeze—enticing even the most hesitant of dancers to join in the revelry.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Forget about luxurious spa treatments; on the Camino, blisters are the ultimate souvenir. You'll collect them like badges of honor, right Steffi? (at least for me, apparently Gladys has a thick skin), and proudly displaying your battle scars to anyone who dares to ask about your "vacation." And let's not forget the colorful characters we encountered along the way. From the other pilgrims, we chatted with at every rest stop to the mysterious locals who seemed to materialize out of thin air, greeting us with 'Buen Camino,' there's never a dull moment on the Camino. But hey, it's not all doom and gloom. Amidst the pain and exhaustion, you'll forge bonds with your fellow sufferers that will last a lifetime. Nothing brings people together like shared misery, right? What was the saying? It's about the journey, not the destination.
Speaking of colorful characters, I'm always grateful for the belief that everything happens for a reason and that every twist and turn in our lives serves a purpose. We might not grasp it right away, but eventually, it unfolds before us. Coincidences? I'm not sure. The folks we encounter in our journey? They've got their own mission, their own motivation. The late-night chats, the stories swapped—they're like nuggets of wisdom wrapped into one.
Big shoutout to Steffi, our towering pal (we're vertically challenged, okay?). And to Veronica and Theresia, longtime pals who've been traversing this camino many times over. Thanks for the wild tales, ladies. And to Sharon, the queen of suggestions and hype, cheers for keeping us going. And to our tapas-and-tinto-de-verano companions—Kathleen, Janine, Noah, Jasmin—y'all rock for sharing your journey with us.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
What made our experience even more ridiculous is the fact that Gladys and I are about as outdoorsy as a penguin in the Sahara. We're more likely to be found at a hole-in-a-wall restaurant than trudging through rugged terrain. But hey, life's all about stepping out of your comfort zone, right?
As we stumbled our way to the Cathedral of St. James, I had a revelation: I actually missed writing. Like, with a pen and paper, not just typing away on a keyboard. Who knew walking for miles could reignite my passion for writing? So here I am, not really scribbling but typing away on my phone (I was on the plane, okay?), realizing that life is full of surprises, like finding a gourmet meal in a gas station or discovering a hidden talent for playing bagpipes!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Well, well, well, looks like our Camino expedition is just getting started! Picture this: another journey awaits, but we'll need to put our persuasive hats on for BK. Resistance is futile; he's joining the fun! What do you say? Portuguese Way, perhaps? And so, with a grateful heart, I bid farewell to the Camino de Santiago (for now), carrying with me a renewed sense of purpose and a treasure trove of memories (and perhaps a few extra pounds, that's more on Gladys though, I gave all mine to her). For some time, it's the adventures that leave us weary, longing for a hot shower, that truly enrich our souls. Here's to the journey, my dear amigos, filled with somber reflection and boundless joy. Until our paths intertwine once more in our next grand adventure! May we meet again, fueled by the memories of this unforgettable journey.

[A] great cabinet opposite—whose front, divided into twelve panels, bore, in grim design, the heads of the twelve apostles, each enclosed in its separate panel as in a frame; while above them at the top rose an ebon crucifix and a dying Christ. According as the shifting obscurity and flickering gleam hovered here or glanced there, it was now the bearded physician, Luke, that bent his brow; now St. John’s long hair that waved; and anon the devilish face of Judas, that grew out of the panel, and seemed gathering life and threatening a revelation of the arch-traitor—of Satan himself—in his subordinate’s form.
Congrats, Jane, you are one out of three on "people who would appear in a representation of the Twelve Apostles."

I hate how Casca had so much potential but Miura took a fat shit on her character after he made her Guts' love interest. It's annoying because we could have gotten a powerful story about a female character living in an grim, patriarchal world and her struggles with misogyny and sexual violence, but she strives forward no matter what and slowly heals from her trauma or snaps and becomes an apostle. But we didn't because the author reduced her to being Guts' manpain, a damsel in distress and an infant because taking a female SA survivor's trauma seriously for once would have been too hard for him I guess.
Yes, sexual violence against women is common in war and there is absolutely nothing wrong with depicting it in your work, but Miura did nothing with it. Every time Casca gets nearly raped she shrugs it off after she has been rescued. No PTSD, no nightmares, no flashbacks, no doubts if she wants to remain a warrior and deal with this shit over and over again, nothing. And then she actually gets raped and that scene is gratuitous garbage and only exists to make the Eclipse more dramatic (as if Guts watching his friends get brutally killed and his bestie transform into a literal demon isn't dramatic enough) and it focused mostly on Guts and his feelings, not her, and I hate it.
Anonymous asked:
I fucking hate how Cascas character is treated, she's my favourite character and I bloody hated the fucking age regression. Like I cared so much about her, her jealousy and her ambitions so to see her basically just acting like a child was so shit. Guts gets to have his PTSD fuel his manpain and berserker rage, while Casca gets to be infantalised. I hated it
Everyone wants to rant about Casca rn, and man I don’t blame you guys. Nothing to add that I haven’t said before, but yeah, it sucks.

Do you hear the noise that is drowning us? Sometimes I'm afraid I don't. Sometimes it fades into the background of the trillion ticking clocks, gates sliding open or shut, switches clicking and light rushing, the relentless flow of bright, sharp words across stone, stone eyes, stone ears and faces and hearts. Not tongues. Those move with the flashes, spilling out lifeblood on already soaked earth, dirt inundated with lives unlived, dreams pressed into thin mirrored shapes, left there in the ground to break themselves into sharp fragments for unwary or uncaring feet, eager to further flood their new home, to make for themselves a new baptism, a hyssop-wrapped meal left for a chimerous thing, god and wretch and apostle and altar in one, mirrored inside and out, reflecting and refracting till every moment is swallowed by its ancestors who are saturnine in appetite if not mien. The face is not grim, you see. The nymph is as bright as its river in the morning, and it shines on us as our lungs drink.

“A New Day: It is evidently clear that, that which has identified itself as "church" is going through monumental upheaval.
Just like in the days of John the Baptist, there is massive migration from the institutional church with large number of believers turning away from traditional/ organizational church to find organic community that is bound up with authentic expression of Christ where every member functions under the Lord’s direct headship (rather than the headship of men). This is God’s ultimate intention concerning His Ekklesia.
Note, by "institutional church," I am not just talking about the traditional mainstream denominational churches such as the Catholic, Anglican, Baptist, Presbyterian, Lutheran etc, but I am referring to all those churches, whether Pentecostal, Charismatic, Apostolic, Reformed or such that operate primarily as institutions or organisations that exist above, beyond, and independent of the members that populate them.
These churches have gravitated towards programs and rituals more than relationships and community. They are highly structured, typically building-centered organizations regulated by set-apart professionals ('ministers' and 'pastors') who are aided by volunteers (laity). They require staff, building, salaries, and administration. In these institutional churches, congregants watch a religious performance once or twice a week led principally by one person (the pastor or minister), and then retreat home to live their individual "Christian" lives.
As the great migration picks momentum, many nervous institutional church leaders with obvious vested interests are responding to this exodus from their buildings and organisations by saying that people are losing interest in God and becoming "worldly.
However, nothing can be further from the truth, this migration/ turning the back on the institutional/ organizational church is not the same as turning away from God or rejecting the faith.
In reality, believers are coming to a grim realization that by and large the churches they have been involved with have been in the numbers game and not the community game.
And the numbers game happens to be drenched in Babylonian value systems, with many of the so called men of god pre-occupied with acquiring personal power via ecclesiastical forms, hierarchy and titles. These pseudo leaders use their position to acquire money and power, some even deliberately distort the Word of God and use blatantly false teaching for financial benefits.
The truth is, the original Ekklesias were just simple informal believing communities that functioned much like extended families. The reason we cannot find information about the early church’s organizational structure is because the early church was not an organization. The reason there are no guidelines for running a church board meeting is because there were no church boards. This is also the reason why the requirements for church elders were only about equiping and training believers (like parents would instruct their children), not about running programs. Because the church was never intended to become a program but a family.
The Ekklesia was originally intended to be a spiritual family, plain and simple. And the apostles continually reiterated this vision— "Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all people, especially to those who belong to the family of believers" (Gal. 6:10). Selah! Acts 2:44-47 (NET)
All who believed were together and held everything in common, 45 and they began selling their property and possessions and distributing the proceeds to everyone, as anyone had need. 46 Every day they continued to gather together by common consent in the temple courts, breaking bread from house to house, sharing their food with glad and humble hearts, 47 praising God and having the good will of all the people. And the Lord was adding to their number every day those who were being saved.” (Daniel Njuguna)

Leonardo da Vinci's "The Last Supper" is considered to be one of the most important paintings in the history of art. A less well known fact is that Leonardo had intensively studied a variety of mystic and spiritual teachings. Some people believe that the twelve apostles are a symbolic portrayal of the twelve signs of the zodiac.
The number twelve, representing the twelve solar months, appears in various narrative forms in Antiquity: the twelve tribes of Israel, the twelve labours of Hercules, the Zoroastrian twelve generals of the sun god Ahura Mazda, and the twelve apostles of Christianity. The attempt to translate the pagan symbolism of astrology into terms acceptable to Christians began in the first centuries of the new church.
There is no direct evidence that Leonardo Da Vinci intended astrological symbolism in his master work. However, he painted it in a time when correspondences between apostles and zodiac signs had been in circulation for over a millenium.
According to one astrological interpretation:
-The apostle on the far right of the painting is Simon who stands for Aries, the first sign. The distinctive head and dynamically gesturing hands pointing to his left clearly illustrate this fact.
-Thaddeus, the apostle immediately to Simon's left, symbolises Taurus. The powerful "Taurean neck" coupled with his hands which he is pointing at his own physical body are a testament to this.
-Next comes Matthew who represents the sign of Gemini. The head and hands point in different directions, symbolising the open and often sometimes indecisive energy of Gemini.
-After Matthew comes Philip who stands for the sign of Cancer, symbolised by his gentle, soft and vulnerable appearance which is the most feminine of all the apostles.
-Next comes James, son of Zebedee, who stands for the sign of Leo. He has an air of certainty which is indicated, among other things, by his confidently outstretched hands.
-Barely noticeable behind James is doubting Thomas, symbol for the modest sign of Virgo. When Virgo does say something it tends to be in a critical or questioning manner, as illustrated by his raised index finger.
-Continuing on the other side of Jesus we find John, his favourite apostle who unmistakably stands for the sign of Libra. His whole character expresses a longing for love and harmony.
-He stands in stark contrast to Judas, betrayer of Jesus. His dark, grim expression stands for the energy of Scorpio, the sign of death and transformation.
-The next apostle is Peter, the Sagittarian among the apostles. He appears to be dynamic and energetic, but in a rather chaotic sense and not as focused as Aries symbolised by Simon.
-Next to him sits Andrew, who represents the sign of Capricorn. He seems rather aloof but at the same time clear and decisive. His hands are raised in a gesture that clearly indicates where his own boundaries are which makes the most steadfast impression of all the apostles.
-The next disciple to his left is James, son of Alphaeus, who is the Aquarian among the disciples. He has physical contact with both Andrew and Peter, symbolising the Aquarian ideal of contact with like-minded people.
-The last apostle is Bartholomew, who represents Pisces, the sign that completes the zodiac. He seems to be observing the proceedings with an air of equanimity without really being involved. It is also interesting to note that his are the only visible feet in the whole painting. Feet are associated with Pisces. In the middle of the painting sits Jesus, the Sun around which everything revolves.

Berakhot 4b: 24. "Michael."
Tumblr media
24. What does this sound like "one" Michael is?
Michael, called the Question, "Who is God?" is explained best usig the Value in Gematria of 2063, ב‎אֶפֶסג‎ "at zero, at the Summit."
Zero is the beginning of the infinite when there was just the Darkness before birth, the Summit is the moment one attains to Ha Shem on Horeb.
Without this Being, who provides creation with its energetic substratum and the rules for all of its interactions, the rest of the Torah, the Bhagavad Gita, the Quran are incapable of adding dimensions to the human mind.
In Hinduism, He is called Purusha, the life spark, the male element needed to turn inert matter into life. In the Bhagavad Gita, He incarnates as the god Krishna, the Scourge of the Wicked in order to explain why duty, justice, sin and wickedness are incompatible with each other. In this tradition, work and devotion to an ever increasing portion of the Grace of God is the only way to be a Hor.
In Islam, His providence is explained as follows:
Mīkāl, in Islam, archangel said to effectuate God’s rizq (providence) as well as natural phenomena, such as rain, and who is often paired with Jibrīl. In Muslim legend, Mīkāl and Jibrīl were the first angels to obey God’s order to prostrate oneself before Adam.
The two are further credited with purifying Muhammad’s heart before his night journey (Isrāʾ) from Mecca to Jerusalem and his subsequent ascension (Miʿrāj) to heaven. Mīkāl is also remembered as aiding the Muslims in their first significant military victory (Battle of Badr) in Arabia in 624.
It is said that he was so shocked at the sight of hell when it was created that he never laughed again. In biblical literature Michael is the counterpart of Mīkāl.
The single allusion to Mīkāl in the Qurʾān (2:98) states: “Whoever is an enemy of God or his angels or his apostles or Jibrīl or Mīkāl: verily God is an enemy of the unbelievers,” a verse exegetes say was intended to address the Jews of Medina, who disbelieved in the Qurʾān’s revelation yet held Michael in particular esteem as “the lord of Israel.”
According to one account, related by al-Qurṭubī (died 1273), Muhammad was questioned by the Jews of Medina about the origin of his prophetic mission.
Upon responding that Jibrīl is the bearer of his revelations, the Jews replied that the archangel (called Gabriel in biblical literature) is an enemy who brings about war and suggested that Michael would be a more trustworthy bearer of revelation.
Another report, related by al-Bayḍāwī (died 1280), states that ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb, curious why they disbelieved the revelations Gabriel had brought to Muhammad, entered the synagogue of Medina and asked the Jews there how they regarded Gabriel.
The Jews replied that Michael sat at God’s left and Gabriel at his right but that the two were enemies. Whereupon ʿUmar responded that an enemy of either angel was immediately an enemy of God.
In Judaism, Dread Michael and Grim Gabriel told Adam and Eve they could not re-enter Eden until the answered the Question, "Who is God?" The Answer always is "He is the Almighty, the Most High."
No matter the religion, its messenger, its book, or its traditions, there is only one way to exceed the boundaries and limitations imposed the cycle of sin and virtue, cause and consequence and that is to retrain oneself in the importance of the question of Who is God? and Who is man?
My response today would be "The Maker of Heaven and Earth" and "The Breakers of Heaven and Earth." We were not put here to break the Law or crack the earth open and core it. As the Mishnah states, we are here to hear the Sound of One, 535, הגה‎‎, "The steering wheel."
Man can pretty much do anything he wants as often and as soon after he learns to use the steering wheel of intellect. Maturity of this sort is like Balaam on his Donkey, which protected him and was mistreated only the way because of it.
If we want to go, as the Mishnah and Gematria state from zero to the Summit, we have accept without being too disgrunted this is going to mean a few sacrifices must be made.
While there is nothing all that wrong with a bunch of teenage boys hanging out around the sling and peeing on each other in the shower morally or ethically, we would wonder if they didn't have a lawn somewhere to mow, trig homework to do or fast food to deliver; Mom and Dad who get up early, go to work, however, who pay form acquire and prepare all the food, vacuum the rugs, scrub the toilets and clean all the dirty underpants, they know they have earned the right to the time to do it.
This is the real lesson of the Steering Wheel found in the Mishnah, "the portion of fat" obtained from life through what is called Gemara, "by growing slim", i.e. "what do we need to learn in order to properly cleave to life and Cleave to God through it?"
To answer this, we begin with the Sound of The Question.

Walking In The Footsteps of St. Paul
Tumblr media
On my recent trip to Greece and Turkey, I returned for my second visit to the incredible archaeological site of the ancient city of Ephesus.
It's been well over a decade since my last visit to Ephesus, and I was amazed at how much more work had been done to uncover even more of its history.
Ephesus was one of the many cities in the Roman Empire where the Apostle Paul not only visited during his missionary journeys but also worked to establish a church that would continue to grow long after he left.
Paul's Letter to the Ephesians in the New Testament contains some specific information about the church and its congregants but is generally believed to be a cyclical letter, one that was copied to be distributed to several churches.
The tour I was on was billed as a journey in "The Footsteps of Paul," However, there were very few places on the tour where we could firmly say that we were walking where Paul most likely walked.
Ephesus was one of those places, however.  Our guide could confidently say there were several streets where we walked that were first-century streets that anyone who walked through Ephesus would have trod all those centuries ago.
There was a thriving Jewish community in Ephesus as well, and there is some graffiti to prove it.  On the marble steps of the great library of Ephesus, someone carved a menorah into them two thousand years ago.
As my fingers traced the grooves in the marble step, I thought of the Apostle Paul arriving in Ephesus, visiting the local synagogue, and preaching the Gospel of Jesus Christ to the people gathered there.
Tumblr media
His message would have seemed strange to most and caused a stir.  He would have claimed that the long-awaited Messiah had arrived and was executed at the behest of the corrupt Jewish religious leaders by the Roman authorities.
And he would have further claimed that this same Messiah was raised from the dead, and his followers sent out to proclaim the coming Kingdom of God on earth.
Paul had the credentials to do all of this in the synagogue.  He was a visiting rabbi who had studied under the tutelage of one of the most famous rabbis in the Jewish world, Gamalial of Jerusalem.
The message he came to share would have taken them all by surprise.
While he was in Ephesus, Paul also healed a young woman who had been enslaved by unscrupulous men, who used her strange powers of divination to make money from those who sought to have their fortunes told by her.
There was a subsequent riot, and things were looking grim for Paul as a huge mob traveled to the city's auditorium to voice their grievances and demand Paul and his companions be brought to justice.
The fascinating thing is that Paul wanted to go to the auditorium and address the crowd, but his friends stopped him and eventually got him out of the city quietly.
I imagine that Paul chafed at this turn of events, though.  He would have seen the auditorium full of people as an incredible opportunity to share the Gospel with the biggest crowd he'd ever spoken to.
His friends quite rightly knew that he would have probably been beaten within an inch of his life, but you have to admire Paul's moxy.
You see, Jesus had transformed his life.  He had been a zealous persecutor of Christians in his former life.  The kind of guy who saw Christianity as a threat to Judaism and Christians as worthy of punishment, even death.
But his encounter with the Spirit of the Risen Christ changed everything.  He spent decades studying Scripture, listening to accounts of Christ's ministry and teaching, and then forming the theology that would change the world.
And then Paul spent the rest of his life traveling the world, telling anyone who would listen about the One who had turned both his life and the world upside down.
As I walked the well-worn stones of those first-century streets and Athens and touched the menorah graffiti on the steps, I couldn't help but feel both gratitude and admiration for the determined rabbi from Tarsus, who believed that Jesus had ushered in a new age and that God's love and grace were for all.
May the grace and peace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all, now and forever.  Amen.

The Ungodly and the Grim Reality of Life after Death
Man by nature is inherently evil, and all he deserves is death; for the wages of sin is death. But in his grace, the Lord has given us his Son Jesus Christ through Whom we can be justified before Him, and thus escape the sting of death. “For by works of the law no human being will be justified in his sight, since through the law comes knowledge of sin” (Rom. 3:20). “And (as Paul writes in Rom. 4:5) to the one who does not work but believes in Him who justifies the ungodly, his faith is counted as righteousness.” That is to say, all those who turn to Christ in repentance and faith are clothed with the Lord’s own righteousness; they are graciously justified before God and treated by God as righteous.
There is no forgiveness without genuine repentance, nor justification apart from the grace of God and faith in his Son Jesus Christ. Repentant sinners are freely justified by God according to the work and merit of his Son Jesus Christ, and are graciously granted the gift of eternal life. As Rom. 6:23 says, “The wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” This verse reveals to us two inexorable absolutes: on the one hand, those who recognize their spiritual bankruptcy and their inability to save themselves, and cry out to the Lord for mercy find peace with God through his Son; they receive God’s free gift of life. Ps. 126:5 says, “Those who sow in tears shall reap in joy.” That’s to say, those who mourn over their sins and seek forgiveness in Christ the Saviour receive the glorious grace of reconciliation with God, and are endowed with life everlasting in the bosom of his glory. But on the other hand, anyone who serves sin, anyone who rejects the Son of God, remains under the bondage of corruption; he is given a portion with the wicked – death is his eternal reward. Prov. 3:33 reads, “The curse of the Lord is on the house of the wicked, but He blesses the home of the just.”
Obedience to the Lord produces blessing, blissfulness, hope and life. But disobedience or sin brings about curse, it leads to death. Having this truth in mind, Moses in Deut. 30:19-20 says to the people of Israel during their wandering in the wilderness, “I call heaven and earth to witness against you today, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and curse. Therefore choose life, that you and your offspring may live, loving the Lord your God, obeying his voice and holding fast to Him, for He is your life and length of days, that you may dwell in the land that the Lord swore to your fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, to give them.”
Set before every human being on this planet are two ends: life and death. The end of each person depends on whether they choose to love the Lord, obey his voice and be faithful to Him until the end or not. All those who reject the Lord Jesus in this life will one day wake up to their surprise in hell. As the Apostle Paul writes in 2 Thess. 1:8-9, the Lord will inflict “vengeance on those who do not know God and on those who do not obey the Gospel of our Lord Jesus. They will suffer the punishment of eternal destruction, away from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of his might.” Their souls will be delivered to everlasting and conscious torment. Only those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, those who die to sin and live in Christ will inherit the Kingdom of God. The Lord says in Rev. 21:6-8, “I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End. I will give of the fountain of the water of life freely to him who thirsts. He who overcomes shall inherit all things, and I will be his God and he shall be my son. But as for the cowardly, the faithless, the detestable, as for murderers, the sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars, their portion will be in the lake that burns with fire and sulfur, which is the second death”
There is no escape for those who are not in Christ; their portion is the second death. Some people think that hell does not exist, and many others believe that because God is love, He cannot send people to such a horrific place. Still many others believe that they do not deserve to go to hell because they think they are ‘good people’. But I tell you this, based on the authority of the Word of God: hell is real. And because God is love He hates sin and all workers of iniquity, i.e., all those who refuse to abandon their evil ways, as well as those who deny the existence of God and refuse to give Him glory. Whether they have heard the Gospel or not, they are without excuse. For God has revealed Himself to all men not only through his Son, but also through creation and by his written law in our hearts. Yet in their boastful pride, many shake their fists in the face of God.
God has revealed Himself to all men through creation, “For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made. So they are without excuse” (Rom. 1:20). This type of revelation called general revelation is an unambiguous and wonderful display of God’s glory and might, a clear proclamation of his handiwork and provident care for his creatures. As David writes in Ps. 19:1, “The heavens declare the glory of God, and the sky above proclaims his handiwork.” Therefore those who reject God are without excuse. “For what can be known about God is plain to them, because God has shown it to them” (Rom. 1:19). Ps. 19:2-6 reads, “Day to day pours out speech, and night to night reveals knowledge. There is no speech, nor are there words, whose voice is not heard. Their voice goes out through all the earth, and their words to the end of the world. In them He has set a tent for the sun, which comes out like a bridegroom leaving his chamber, and, like a strong man, runs its course with joy. Its rising is from the end of the heavens, and its circuit to the end of them, and there is nothing hidden from its heat.”
While the physical world testifies to the existence of God, his divine nature, his infinite providence and everlasting power, our conscience helps us discern between good and evil. This mechanism is meant to guide man toward the truth. Hence, every time he sins, his conscience accuses him. The testimony of creation and the work of conscience are sufficient to refute any assertion that a person can be totally unaware of the existence of God. Therefore everyone who denies the existence of the Creator God and refuses to worship Him stands condemned; all those who suppress their consciences in order to freely indulge in deeds of wickedness are without excuse; all those who bow their knees before false gods rather than the Creator God are under divine curse because they suppress the truth about God with their unrighteousness. Such are doomed, “For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who by their unrighteousness suppress the truth” (Rom. 1:18).
Apart from general revelation, God has also revealed Himself to all men in a special way through his incarnate Son, the Lord Jesus Christ – “Whoever has seen Me has seen the Father”, declares the Lord Jesus Christ in John 14:9. Col. 1:15 tells us, “He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation.” For the Son, the Father and the Holy Spirit are one, one in essence, with the same attributes. Just as the Father is God, the Son is God, and the Holy Spirit is also God. God the Son was in the beginning with God the Father and God the Holy Spirit. And by Him all things were created, in heaven and on earth. Christ is the Light that shines in the darkness. For after the fall of Adam, we were all dead in sin. But, when the fullness of time came for our redemption, the Father sent the Son into the world. He became flesh and came to earth, that through Him all might know God. For sin had separated us all from God and kept us prisoners of death. As John 3:16 says, “God so loved the world, that He gave his only Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life.” Jesus Christ, the Prince of Peace, came to reconcile us with God, He brought salvation to all who sit in darkness. For He is the Light of the world, the Lord our salvation. Without Him no one can be justified before God.
Christ came into the world to save sinners. However, it is essential for us to understand that his coming into the world was also to make God known to us; it was to reveal to us the attributes of God. Christ’s sinless life, his teaching and preaching of the Word of God here on earth, and his works – i.e. the signs and wonders and healings that He performed, his crucifixion, his resurrection from the dead and his ascension to glory – clearly reveal to us the nature and character of God. As Paul says in Col. 2:9, “In Him the whole fullness of deity dwells bodily.”
Therefore we are all without excuse. No one can justify his rejection of Christ by ignorance; for God has revealed Himself fully to all through his Son. Anyone who rejects the Son rejects the Father who sent Him. Therefore God will unleash his righteous wrath upon those who dishonor Him. Ps. 7:11-13 reads, “God is a just Judge, and God is angry with the wicked every day. If he does not turn back, He will sharpen His sword; He bends his bow and makes it ready. He also prepares for Himself instruments of death; He makes His arrows into fiery shafts.”
Wrath is God’s righteous response to the wickedness of man. Such a righteous and justified indignation substantiates the love of God, his righteousness, holiness and goodness. Because God is love, holy, good and righteous, therefore He abhors all that is evil. The psalmist understands this to be true of God. And so when he prays in Ps. 5:4-6, he bears this testimony about God, “For You are not a God who takes pleasure in wickedness, nor shall evil dwell with You. The boastful shall not stand in Your sight; You hate all workers of iniquity. You shall destroy those who speak falsehood; the Lord abhors the bloodthirsty and deceitful man.”
Now, to those who think they are good enough to be right with God, “There is none righteous, no, not one” (Rom. 3:10). The Lord Himself affirms in Mark 10:18, “No one is good but One, that is, God.” If you see yourself as a good person, this is what you ought to know: all your good works are just enough to buy you a ticket for hell; for they are only filthy rags in the sight of the Holy God. There is no escape for unrepentant sinners. Anyone who rejects the Son of God ought to be terrified; for there is no other way to be reconciled to God. Christ the Lord came to bring light into the world, to turn sinners to God, to give them life at the cost of his own life. He died to save sinners from sin, judgement, wrath and hell. Anyone who rejects the Son of God is condemned to eternal destruction. John 3:18-20 reads, “Whoever believes in Him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God. And this is the judgment: the light has come into the world, and people loved the darkness rather than the light because their works were evil. For everyone who does wicked things hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his works should be exposed.”
He who tramples on the precious blood of Christ cannot escape judgment. For God will not let unpunished those who dishonour his Son. Whoever hears the Gospel and rejects it commits the ultimate sin against God, and there is no way they can be reconciled to Him. All that is left for them is to face the wrath of God, to spend eternity in the hell of fire, subject to conscious cruciation. “For if we go on sinning deliberately after receiving the knowledge of the truth, there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins, but a fearful expectation of judgment, and a fury of fire that will consume the adversaries. Anyone who has set aside the Law of Moses dies without mercy on the evidence of two or three witnesses. How much worse punishment, do you think, will be deserved by the one who has trampled underfoot the Son of God, and has profaned the blood of the covenant by which he was sanctified, and has outraged the Spirit of grace? For we know Him who said, “Vengeance is mine; I will repay.” And again, “The Lord will judge his people.” It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the Living God”, Heb. 10:26-31 reads.
Sin is a lack of conformity to or a violation of God’s law, it is an act of rebellion against God, punishable by death. There is no hope for people who do not seek reconciliation with God through his Son Jesus Christ. Such ought to be terrified, because by rejecting Christ the Lord and Saviour, they turn their backs on the grace of God and remain dead in trespasses and sins; they are held captive by the sting of death. Unless they find peace with God, through repentance and faith in his Son Jesus Christ, they will never find freedom from sin and death. Therefore hell will be the eternal destination of their souls.
The Lord Jesus took on the wrath of God on the cross, so that anyone who believes on Him might have their sins forgiven. He is the only means through which sins are forgiven, He is the only access to God. “I am the Way and the Truth and the Life. No one comes to the Father except through Me”, declares the Son in John 14:6. His blood was shed to cleanse repentant sinners from their idols and impurities. There is no cleansing for those who reject the precious blood of Christ. Anyone who rejects the Lamb of God remains covered with filth inside and out, from head to toe, and cannot enter the Kingdom of God. In this life we all have two choices: to turn to the Lamb of God that was slain, in order to be cleansed from all our filths by his precious blood, or to hold onto our filthy garments and be cast into the outer darkness. The option we choose determines our end. Those who are purified by the blood of the Lamb belong to Him; they alone will inherit the Kingdom of God. So declares the Lord in John 13:8, “If I do not wash you, you have no part with Me.”
If you reject Christ the Saviour, it is foolish to think that somehow you will escape hell. God is angry with you every single day. I encourage you to consider the judgements of God that fell upon those of old and the angels who despised the authority of God and disobeyed Him. 2 Pet. 2:4-10 says, “For if God did not spare angels when they sinned, but cast them into hell and committed them to chains of gloomy darkness to be kept until the judgment; if He did not spare the ancient world, but preserved Noah, a herald of righteousness, with seven others, when He brought a flood upon the world of the ungodly; if by turning the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah to ashes He condemned them to extinction, making them an example of what is going to happen to the ungodly; and if He rescued righteous Lot, greatly distressed by the sensual conduct of the wicked (for as that righteous man lived among them day after day, he was tormenting his righteous soul over their lawless deeds that he saw and heard); then the Lord knows how to rescue the godly from trials, and to keep the unrighteous under punishment until the Day of Judgment, and especially those who indulge in the lust of defiling passion and despise authority. Bold and willful, they do not tremble as they blaspheme the glorious ones.”
Unless you turn away from your sins right now and seek forgiveness in the name of the Lord Jesus, there will be no escape for you. As I quoted earlier, “Whoever believes in Him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God” (John 3:18). The Son of God cannot be dishonoured. The Father Himself promises in Ps. 89:23, “I will crush his foes before Him and strike down those who hate Him.” Therefore I urge you not to delay. Turn away from your sins now, for tomorrow may be too late. Salvation is now! Judgment is coming soon. As Is. 55:6 says, “Seek the Lord while He may be found; call upon Him while He is near.” Otherwise you will die in your sins, you will leave this world, dragging with you the heavy burden of all your sins. And God will cast his wrath upon you for all the abominations you have committed. For every unrepentant sinner is guilty before God. There is no rest for the ungodly, but torment and dread. Because they have rejected the only Son of God in Whom “we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of his grace” (Eph. 1:7), the eternal destination of their souls is hell, where there is weeping and gnashing of teeth.
Do not be caught up in your pride. I urge you to turn now to the Lord Jesus Christ in repentance and faith in order to be reconciled to God. For there is no hope for those who die in sin: the death row in which they confine themselves does not have an exit. The path they take while here on earth has no turnabout. It goes straight to hell and runs through eternity, being engulfed in the fire that is never quenched, and is infested with worms that never die (cf. Mark 9:48). Ps. 34:21-22 reads, “Evil shall slay the wicked, and those who hate the righteous shall be condemned. The Lord redeems the soul of his servants, and none of those who trust in Him shall be condemned.” I plead with you to repent of your sins, to put your trust in Christ, and He will clothe you with his garment of righteousness. You will no longer be God’s enemy, but his child. You will be sealed in the love of God by the Spirit of grace Who will make you joint heir with Christ. Instead of wrath, you will receive mercy; instead of eternal torment in hell, you will have eternal life in heaven in the glorious presence of God.
