Mutant Greentoes lovingly stared at me. His deep, crimson eyes glistening in the light of the sunset. I could feel his breath on my face as he leaned closer to me. He was so close that our noses were almost touching. "I love you," he whispered into my ear. "You're everything I've ever wanted." My heart skipped a beat. My body tingled with excitement. I felt like I couldn't breathe. It was all too much for me to handle. He pulled away from me slowly, but not before kissing my cheek softly. Then he turned around and walked back towards the house. I watched him go, feeling empty inside. I didn't know what to do or say. All I knew is that I loved him more than anything else in this world. And now he's gone again. I sighed heavily and looked up at the sky. The sun had already set by now. I could see the stars twinkling brightly above me. They seemed to be shining down on me, telling me it would be okay. That things will get better soon enough.

I stood there for a while longer, staring up at the night sky. But then I heard someone calling out my name.

I turned around quickly and saw Mutant Greentoes running towards me. He stopped right in front of me and smiled. "Hey," he said. "How have you been?" "Good," I replied. "And yourself?" "Great," he answered. "I'm glad we got to talk yesterday." "Me too," I told him. "It felt good to finally tell you how I really feel about you." "Yeah," I agreed. "But I still don't understand why you never told me sooner." "Well…" he started. "I guess I just wasn't sure if you felt the same way about me." "Why wouldn't I?" I asked. "We've known each other for years now. We grew up together. You're like family to me." "That's true," he admitted. "But I mean… I thought maybe you didn't want to be with me because of my mutation." "What? Why would you think that?" I asked. "Because I'm different from everyone else," he explained. "I can't help it. I'm a mutant. And I know it makes people uncomfortable when they see me." "No one should ever make you feel bad about who you are," I told him. "Not even me." "Thanks," he said. "I appreciate that." "So what happened after I left last night?" he asked. "Did you go home?" "Yes," I answered. "I went straight home and fell asleep." "Oh," he said. "Were you upset about something?" "A little bit," I admitted. "But I'm fine now. Everything worked out for the best." "Really?" he asked. "Are you sure?" "Yeah," I nodded. "I am. I'll explain later though. Right now, I need to go inside. I promised my mom I'd help her cook dinner tonight."

I woke up the next morning feeling groggy and tired - again. I rolled over on my side and glanced at the clock on my nightstand. It read 5:20 AM. I sat up in bed and rubbed my eyes. I got out of bed and made my way downstairs. I poured myself a bowl of cereal and sat down at the table. I ate quickly and then quietly made my way back upstairs. I changed into a pair of jeans and a t-shirt before making my way back down towards the kitchen. The back door was never loud - but I had never feared it creaking as much as I did now. I slowly slithered out and gingerly closed the door. It was foggy outside, and still a bit dark. I walked towards the forest like I usually did, but for once, no eyes were looking back at me. 'It's probably just the fog.' I thought to myself, still a bit on the edge about that lesson. As I was looking to see if anyone was there, I realized: I've never been inside the forest. I made my way towards the inside the forest and looked around. There was no sign of Mutant Greentoes. I sighed and made my way deeper into the woods. I made my way through the trees and bushes until I came across a small clearing, just big enough to see the horizon. I stepped into the clearing and looked around. I could see the sun rising. I could see the sky turning orange and red. I could see the clouds moving in the wind. I could see everything. And yet, I could see nothing. I stood there and stared at the clearing. I stared at the grass and the dirt. I stared at the trees and the leaves. I stared at the birds flying overhead. I thought about how nice it must be to see this whenever you want. To be able to look at the world without having to worry about anything else. I thought about how lucky I was to have seen this. I thought about how lucky I was to have lived this life. I thought about how lucky I was to have Mutant Greentoes. "Don't come any closer." I heard someone say. I turned around and saw Mutant Greentoes standing behind me. Er - crouching? I was perturbed by what I saw. It didn't look like Mutant. It looked completely untamed, it looked feral. Almost like an animal. His feathers were matted with dried blood. He was covered in shallow gashes and scratches. I could see the fear, anger, angst, and contrite in his eyes. "What happened?" I asked him. "Are you okay?" He nodded. "I'm fine," he said. "But please, stay back," he paused for a moment. "I don't want to hurt you." he said with a shaky voice. I didn't know what to say or do. "Please," he begged me. "Stay back." My instinct was telling me to run. But I couldn't just just leave him like this. I couldn't just leave him broken and dejected.

"I'll help you," I told him. Mutant Greentoes stood stock-still as I slowly approached him, and gave me a fearful gaze. I reached out and touched his shoulder. He flinched away from me. I tried again, and this time he let me touch him. I gently ran my fingers over his wounds. They were all superficial. I could feel the heat coming off them. I could feel the pain radiating from them.
