The Green Iguana, or Iguana iguana, lives throughout Central America, Northern South America, and the Caribbean. With their numerous population and the fact that they have barely any enemies (human or animal) they are classed as Least Concern.

They can grow up to 2 meters in length, with males averaging at 4 kilos and females half their weight. Their strong muscular legs and tail make them excellent climbers (they can climb trees and fall up to 18 meters without injuring themselves) and fast swimmers. They're known for having a flap of skin hanging from their chins (a dewlap). The movement of the dewlap is how they communicate with each other. And despite being called Green Iguanas, their colours range from green to blue, brown, and orange (usually their colour morphs depend on their location of origin).

Similar to birds, iguana hatchlings have a special tooth called a 'caruncle' used for breaking through their egg shells. It falls off shortly after hatching.

Fun fact: Green Iguanas have a rudimentary third eye on top of their heads known as a 'pineal eye', which is sensitive to changes in light levels and movement.

The last #colorpencil piece this year from my #summer visit to @hausdesmeeres is especially special: This one is also an old sketch from 2014, of a #greeniguana, which I didn't get to color onsight at the time - due to (mental) exhaustion. I got to catch up on this, along with another sketch of mine of a #chameleon (previous post), this year. Again, I think it profits from the #pencilcoloring I used this year, opposed to my usual watercoloring. But the thing is, as so many years have passed, I actually did not get so lucky with this sketch, as there was no green #iguana visible (visitable 😆) in the house anymore. I searched up and down in the house, searched the website and finally got in contact with the house. They answered me very quickly and friendly informing me that, Yes, there are no green iguanas housed anymore, since the housing concept in general changed - more open, more space. So the remaining animals have been relocated and then adopted. Which brings me to a mind-boggling thing, that I figured out during my social media research. The @hausdesmeeres not only houses the #indoorzoo but also offers space to an organisation dedicated to lost, found and confiscated animals (mostly reptiles). It's called "Der Blaue Kreis" (the blue cycle) and you can support their cause by donating or even adopting reptiles - if you're qualified, of course. https://blauerkreis.at/ There's a great behind the scene glimpse on tiktok of the adoption station (tiktok: @hausdesmeeres) and if you look closely you can even see some green iguanas in the reel. 🎥 🦎 So, yeah, to make this story short, I couldn't get a #naturedrawing out of this and worked from photographs found on the house's social media.
