Europe Lecture (2013)

The documentary Freedom Besieged premiered last night in Toronto, to a packed house and with the director Pan Yiannitsos and cinematographer Izaiah Kane present. The film is any eye-opening and sobering look at the financial, political and social crisis that has gripped Greece for almost a decade. Bur rather than relying solely on well known and established peronalities to tell the story and provide context (and there are a number good ones in the film who span the ideological, political, economic and social spectrum), or lapsing into rehashing the same old lazy tropes and cliches about the country and the crisis, the filmakers make a bold, path-breaking move and turn their main focus on a group of young Greeks. The film show how, in the aftermath of the crisis, these young people are taking control of their future and destiny with ground-breaking initiatives across a range of fields and industries, at the same time as they are trying to define what it means to be Greek in the early part of the 21st century. There is a lot to unpack in this film that would take many more words to describe, but hey I’m sharing this on social media and who’s going to read ‘em. So to summarize the essence of this doc and its central message I’ll summon Socrates who said “The secret of change is to focus all of your energy, not on fighting the old, but on building the new.” Discosure: the director is my nephew and while I am not above shamelessly shilling for a good cause or effort, the reason to see Friedom Besieged is that it stands on its own.
