Manga def gave me a much higher appreciation of Izumi than brotherhood did because like? watching brotherhood and she showed back up again after a long time and I remember being like “I feel like this is supposed to be more important than this is coming off as, but I guess it’s nice to see you again Izumi??” Although I was definitely always on the lookout for when ling would finally pop back up. I declared him my fave the literal episode before he became greed so I was Starved for a while 😭
03 though… I’m not a hater of 03, I can appreciate what they did and how they did it with what little they had to go on at the time, but it’s just not the right vibes for me to sit down and watch (and not just because ling isn’t in it). I did read a synopsis of the story though, and it definitely did some things very interestingly and I kind of find it like some fascinating case study!! A sort of darkest timeline case study. I probably would’ve had a deeper appreciation for Izumi if I had watched 03, but I also think it was Foolish of studio bones to just assume people who were watching brotherhood watched 03 or wanted to watch 03.

I completely agree with you. Izumi in Brotherhood feels just...not important??? I mean, I love that woman but they did a terrible job trying to make her relationship with the Elric Brothers some kind of found family idk how to explain it, maybe I need to finish my re-watch but I think they could do more with them because it is really sad how distant they are in Brotherhood compared with fma03 or the manga as you said. AND YESS I was like you, reaching for more a more of Ling's scenes and they give me ✨ nothing ✨ after the GreedLing introduction.
Fun fact: I hated Ling the exact moment the appeared on screen for the first time, but then when he fought with Bradley I was like "Oh man, he is such a great character!!!" AND BOM, GREED TOOK HIS BODY AND DISAPPEARED?!!!
And about fma03, I understand you. I mean, I prefer the original plot, the characters in the mangahood (Ling and Van Hohenheim) and I prefer the homunculi and Father as villains than Dante. I watched first 2003 because I thought Brotherhood was a second season and when I started it I was so f confused. I like to think that fma2003 is a what if or an AU fic, so I can enjoy both of them (or three counting the manga). But yeah, there are some things that they included in fma03 but were removed in Brotherhood and I don't understand why they thought it was a good idea.

I watched the final Netflix adaptation of FMAB. Here’s some of my notes
- “Y’know, I don’t think he has any need for his dad.” Hoenhiem. Uhm you left him he kinda did for a while so idk why you’re being bitter now

Conclusion: yep. This got me in the heart, even if it isn’t the show itself. Still stuff that bothered me. But overall, this series of movies is not so bad. Not so great, at times, but not so bad. Honestly, I think they did the best they could and that’s really all I could ask for. And it was nice seeing them all in live action. For this movie, an 8/10. For the series of movies? 6.5/10. Not remotely comparable to the original series, but still a worthwhile watch and something I’d recommend if you want a recap of the series but don’t have time to watch it all again.

feels like i should clarify that while dark is definitely thing-being-hosted by the niwa, he's also never been outside of them. he's never ever been his own entity, only a part of them, which is why he constantly, continuously states that he is them, an alter ego in the truest sense. dark can't exist or properly function in the real world without being a part of the niwa and their bodies the same way daisuke can't survive in a dream world for long by himself without dark. but what i'm mostly specifically saying is dark's relationship with the niwa goes just a tiny bit deeper than say yuji and sukuna, greed and ling, izumi and migi, because from the start, dark was born thanks to the niwa themselves, their feelings, and just a massive overload of hikari magic. 'if it weren't for you, i would never have existed.' this is entirely a true statement. between dark and daisuke, it's never just been about daisuke confronting an external identity, a secondary force to come to understand and bond with, but quite literally aspects of his own self, as well as the literal and metaphorical embodiment of the very first human dark (the og niwa ancestor,) and his family inheritance as a phantom thief. dark is truly not a separate thing from daisuke. they're just two different facets of each other.

thought I should collect my vague fma/mp100 thoughts here to make it easier to have them all in one place !
basic plot/character stuff
ed and al are both talented young psychics who got their powers when they were pretty young. ed got his powers around the time their dad (a CRAZY powerful psychic) left, and al got his shortly after their mom died :(
they thought they could use their powers to bring their mom back as a spirit, but it went. very bad. instead, an evil spirit took advantage of them and started fucking Eating Their Life Forces. al freaked out and astral projected out of panic, but his entire body was consumed so now he's. stuck like that. ed managed to exorcise the spirit, but not until after his arm and leg are devoured too
their motivation is to get rid of evil spirits that take advantage of people and hurt them like this, which is what takes them to roy mustang's door
roy mustang is a fake psychic pretending to have pyrokinesis (he just has a flamethrower behind his desk) because I think that's funny. he's running an exorcism business like spirits and such, except he has a larger crew -- mostly his friends he can call up to do odd jobs for him, like fixing the leaky pipes that make noises that make people think their house is haunted or whatever. he's also the only exorcism business that's willing to hire a teenager, so that's how the elrics end up working for him
in addition to mustang's crew of non-psychics, he also has hughes, who is tragically a ghost. there is definitely some tragic back story here that I'm still working on hashing out, but they've kind of come to terms about it now. he still haunts his family, who know he's there, and he agrees to help out mustang with Actual Spirit Issues when the elrics are unavailable
the elrics' quest to deal with manipulative evil spirits leads them to encounter the sins, who are all very powerful evil spirits. one of the first ones they deal with is greed, who they mostly exorcise, but he manages to just barely survive, dimple style. he's looking for ways to bring himself back up to full power
enter: ling yao, recently awakened psychic who is also looking for ways to become more powerful. he keeps over-exerting his psychic powers and exhausting himself, which is how the elrics come across him mostly unconscious. he's very excited to meet another esper, but he makes the mistake of asking why al doesn't possess ed, since he knows that can enhance someone's psychic powers. the elrics are both Very Sensitive about that kind of topic and tell him to fuck Right Off
bad idea, because then he goes and finds a spirit of his own. both he and greed approach their mutually beneficial consensual possession situation for self-serving reasons. both of them look at each other and think "yeah I can definitely manipulate this guy into making me more powerful" [fast forward a couple months to when they've become Extremely attached to each other] oopsies
lan fan is a telepath. ling did not know this, so he tried to act soooo normal about being possessed around her. that didn't work for long, jackass! she got so fucking angry with him when she heard a literal devil on his shoulder, and even though ling stopped her from destroying greed, that evil spirit is on THIN ICE.
scar's family was killed in a psychic terrorist incident (think kimblee if he was part of claw). he's one of those really late bloomer espers -- it wasn't until this traumatic event that his psychic powers awoke, and he hates them because of the link to the event. now he's on his vengeance based quest, going after psychics that abuse their powers
things I'm still working out the details for
mustang was involved in some high profile fuck-up. kind of like separation arc reigen except uhhh people Died. hughes was likely one of those people. no one has enough proof to outright prove he did it, but he is definitely linked to the event, especially because he was a pretty public psychic figure at the time. in reality, it was the fault of the sins, but it's harder to find evidence when it was evil spirits doing it
olivier + the rest of briggs are an anti-psychic terrorism government agency (kinda like joseph) and initially scar is one of their targets, but they end up recruiting him bc they have a common goal
eventually scar starts working at spirits and such (olivier's assignment so he can keep an eye on mustang) but he fucking hates it. oh my god I cannot emphasize how much he hates it. imagine reigen serizawa and mob at spirits and such except none of them can stand each other. that's mustang, scar, and ed having to work together.
mei is also a psychic! she kind of latches onto both scar and alphonse (separately) because she needs some help killing someone. they have very different reactions to this.
the someone she's trying to kill is father, a super powerful psychic who's been orchestrating much of the psychic terrorism, as well as directing the sins. he's like if toichiro had a specialty for spirit wrangling like matsuo
miscellaneous au details
ed and al's auras (and al's spirit form) are mostly gold, ed's leaning more coppery and al's more of a green-gold. ed's kind of has the look of fire crackling around him. ling's aura is a blend of red and purple and has a kind of watercolor/bruise look. it's more vibrant and has more purple when greed is possessing him. mei's is mostly pink with some red.
mob psycho spirits range from completely abstract to mostly humanoid and frequently have multiple forms in between. hughes looks mostly humanoid most of the time, but can go simplified and silly when gushing about his family. al has a more powerful form that looks like the full suit of armor but he doesn't like using it very often, so most of the time he's a long blob that's just kind of armor shaped (like when the armor is simplified for silly moments). greed at full power looked like the ultimate shield, after being weakened he looks more like a dimple-like blob that resembles the face in ling's mindscape. when possessing ling and both of them are using their powers, ling gets lines on his face like on the ultimate shield (like dimple's cheek spots!)
other spirits: pride looks how you'd expect. horrible shadow spirit. envy bodysnatches a lot. wrath has been possessing a politician for Literal Decades. it's no good. I'm not sure about the other sins
people's feelings on possession range from the elrics (Fuck No), to hughes and mustang (if necessary to get a job done), to greedling (they like it like this actually)
the rockbells aren't psychics but they live kinda adjacent to the psychic world bc theyre family friends with the elrics + hohenheim, so they know more than most about psychic powers

Part 2 to this mess.
To phrase my point concisely: BNHA is more focused on putting relationships to the test, as opposed to relying on already solid relationships to move the plot.
Examples off the top of my head that don't rely on personal conflicts (like BNHA), but actually rely on the characters' interactions and pre-existing relationships with each other to drive their plots forward:
Because I'm literally reading it right. now.--Soul Eater is a big example. That entire story moves forward by relying on the friendships among the seven main kids. It develops their relationships with each other, and hell, the weapons and meisters literally have to synchronize their souls and emotions with each other in order to even make it through a fight. These are already solid relationships that only get further development throughout the story. The conflict/plot in Soul Eater is driven by the main cast deepening their bonds with each other.
Because it's the manga I always refer back to for everything--Fullmetal Alchemist. In FMA--yes the big conflict is fighting Father and the homunculi, but what drives the plot forward and adds so many layers to it is the main characters' abilities to trust each other despite all their differences and perspectives. Edward and Alphonse place the value of a human life above all else, and have to learn what having mercy is going to cost them. Roy Mustang and Riza Hawkeye have helped in committing genocide and show no mercy, but want to redeem themselves. Ling and Mei want the philosopher's stone that requires human lives to be sacrificed to be created, but have to get mixed up in another country's affairs in order to do so. All of these characters have to learn to reconcile with their differences and work together to save the world, and themselves. And the story does actually put some focus on how uncomfortable the two main characters are sometimes around their soldier friends superiors, and around the Eastern Envoy's desire to obtain immortality through the Philosopher's stone. But the plot moves forward by them ALL putting their differing perspectives aside and working together. And in the end, Greed even hammers in the impact of their friendships right before his death. They were all together from the beginning and stayed together until the very end (and most of them are all shown together in a photo! 💙)
Gonna use Naruto again--Naruto and Sakura already had a bond with Sasuke before he left. That friendship they all had is what kept them going and moving forward. Naruto, Sakura, and Kakashi, while still mentor/mentees, eventually developed into them being on equal ground and relying on each other to move forward. And of course in the end, friendship saved Sasuke. Although Naruto does align with BNHA in that its personal conflicts between people drive the story (Naruto and Sasuke/Sasuke and Itachi/Kakashi and Obito).
And it's plain as day. Look at the relationships BNHA's plot line is depending on:
First and foremost: Midoriya and Bakugo. The entire story focused on them trying to work their feelings out. Finally they did, 322? chapters later. Whether it was handled well is up to each person to decide, but that's where the story put the MC's focus. Now where to go from there?
The Todoroki Family: Shouto's arc is literally about reconciling his family's abuse. Which, imo is probably the toughest relationship dynamic the story has to offer.
Last but not least: the heroes and villains. The LOV trio and their kids, Aizawa and Kurogiri, Endeavor and his son, Touya and his mother, Touya and his other two siblings.
As beautiful as found family is, and as strong as it can be, BNHA doesn't put emphasis on it. If it did, we'd have more detailed bonds among the kids at UA, because the Found Family trope is definitely pushed on them. But they're all too 2D for it to make any real impact. If found family/power of friendship was the answer to BNHA's conflict, we'd have so much more focus on the interactions among the LOV members where that trope is pushed as well, and not just get one-sided dialogues from a few of them here and there. If you really look at what BNHA puts emphasis on (and the author himself did this for his own personal reasons I'm sure) it's the impact your family that you're born into has on you. Not everybody has to like that, I get it. Blood is not everything. But Horikoshi obviously put time and effort into showing that your family impacts you BIG. They can hurt you, but they can save you too (Touya). They can hurt you, but the fact that they existed and wanted YOU to exist can be a comfort in its own (Tenko). But sometimes, you really do need acceptance from an entirely different group of people to thrive (Toga).
These are the relationships driving BNHA forward, the endgame to the story, and none of them are solid relationships. They all need to be reconciled in some way in order to come to a conclusion. In these set ups, the conflict is not only physical (fighting), but it’s rooted in emotion (saving), and is extremely personal (realizing what it takes to really be a hero).
I think my bottom line is: BNHA is not as friendshippy as it's made out to be outside of canon. I don't think people are thrilled with the outcome right now because it's not focusing on the UA kids (all of them), or because the LOV aren't getting any emotional scenes with each other digging into their connections (for now, I'm not expecting this to happen but it's possible), or because the heroes are going to basically be given everything by not really developing, and will just be extending a hand to the villains and saving the day that way.
I think that was always the plan for the story btw, but I don't blame anyone for disliking the way the heroes have been handled thus far. They're pretty stagnant as characters.
BUT--that being said--I think the story is going to end on the note of the heroes being rewarded by accomplishing their challenges. Which, isn't really rooted in any found family or friendship relationship in the story.

Finished Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood last night and frickin bawled through four episodes...
This post will certainly include spoilers, but I will try to keep it as light as possible!
Things that I realized this time around:
- Greed is hands down my favorite homunculus. The way he chooses to work with Ling and fight alongside him in his own way is so goddamn beautiful. “This is my first and last lie” OW
- I’ve always recognized the emphasis that FMA and FMAB puts on familial love, but I forgot how much they stress platonic love and how important friendships are. The found family that Ed and Al create is so enormous and it’s impossible for me to think of all the characters in the series as anything other than a huge family. I can just imagine the entire cast getting together for holidays, everyone teasing Elicia as she grows up and has a normal-ish life, all the chimeras having a good time using their abilities to play with the young’uns, Ed and Al pranking half the cast, catching up, etc. Hiromu Arakawa really took my heart and threw it against the wall, scraped it up, then stomped on the pile of my old heart.
- Hohenheim really stole the show for me this time around. I fuckin bawled when the Elric brothers, his sons, literally had his back in the final fights. Ed calls him dad for once. Then at the end of the episode how they ran all those flashbacks of him interacting with his sons... plus how one of the first things Al does is take Hohenheim’s hand and comment on how it’s warm! I absolutely lost it. It’s such a small thing, but I still lost it. Then that comment, the “and once you and our sons came into my life, I felt alive in a way I never had before” in front of Trisha’s grave? Gone. I was obliterated.
- The brothers being happy at the end. They’re not satisfied, they’ll never be satisfied (*cue Hamilton music*), but they’re working together to further research alchemy and find ways to make sure that tragedies like what happened with Alexander and Nina never happen again. It feels SO good to see Al smiling and making full use of his expressions. Plus, Ed becomes such a mature adult, but doesn’t let go of complaining or acting like everything’s a hassle. He does that less out of genuinely not caring and more as a way of teasing. I have never been as stupidly happy watching him hug Winry at the train station as I was this time around. Where he was broody at the beginning of the series, he finally showcases the absolute softness at his core and stops being afraid to display it and and and
In short I basically cried nonstop for eighty minutes and then immediately began FMA 03. I’ve never seen it but I’ve seen CoS, so I’m pretty excited to watch it and find the similarities and differences.

Wenzhou. Wen Kexing and Zhou Zishu. They both are a trope, contrast between each other. Both refering to the other the light of their life. Having duels often with each other and always together when they both encounters with the Scorpions, their last opponent before reaching immortality. Their colour up their life, with Wen Kexing wearing so many colours with his hanfu, Zhou Zishu smiles.
They both mirrors each other, be it in a duel or fighting, be it in their purpose of life and training methods. They both are soulmates with the sense of knowing each other intimately and without words. Everyone, be it the women, children and their disciples knows they are zhiji, and also a pair of mandarin ducks. Wen Kexing loves music and proficient at it, while Zhou Zishu does not. Zhou Zishu likes bath because water always cleanse him from anything, including blood and tears. It is a habit that turns into something de-stress.
They both literally becomes the reason of death between each other. They both wanders around jianghu, having foods and drinks in moderation and dual cultivation with each other to retain their health. Seeing their 20 disciples are alive and well, having their own families makes them happy. They both sometimes dreams of an alternate universe where Gu Xiang or Qin Jiuxiao alive and well. Having their friends and families alive without the cluster-fuck of jianghu greed. It was a regret of them of not doing better or unable to prevent something.
But they cannot change everything. Where is the beauty in life if they change certain things?
Love is ancient. Zhou Zishu knows about it. Lao Wen is so passionate with his love. From their relationship growth, Lao Wen's love is truly the thing he treasure most. He would not take for granted. Once is enough at White Deer Cliff event. Something so serendipity he never thought to have.
He was a ghost. He kills, he maims and he schemes. He does not deserves forgiveness. Even to A-Ling he never ask for it. But the young man freely given it to him. With A-Xu, he could not. He could not bear if the man would not forgave him for his stunts. He would accept any form of punishment his shixiong had.
He likes to bring comfort to A-Xu. Transporting the man with care. Ever since he knew about the Nails, he subtly transport the man with gentleness, often during midnight to settle down the effect of the Nails. Sometimes he overwhelming the man. But never to pressure and pity. And A-Xu trusted him. Even now A-Xu having unbroken faith and trust on him. From his clothing to preparing foods, his A-Xu wears and eat it. Even walnuts, the one he dislike most to eat only once in his life. All because of Wen Kexing.

Reasons why I think Greed is the black sheep of the homonculus, besides running away from home and not following father's orders. I mean, there's that too, but I meant in behavior. One of the reasons is that he's very, very clear about his motives. He wants everything, period. One of the things we didn't know about Father and the homonculus was, for a long time, their motives. They're quite literally a family of cryptids. I'm mainly talking about Envy and Lust, since they're the ones we saw most often (and Gluttony was just... Yeah). They were very mysterious when they appeared or even later, didn't say anything about their abilities or what they were here for (which is smart, keep the surprise effect - looking at the villains who literally explain their powers to the enemy here. FMA doesn't do that, it's great). But Greed? Just straight up says that he's an homonculus as if he didn't give the answer to a big mystery. He's VERY blunt while Lust and Envy seem to be trying to preserve the mystery of it all, be it because they're drama queens or because Father ordered them to not say anything. Greed has no discreet bone in his body, I assume that he escaped Father for so long only because Father didn't actively hunt him. Also seems to care about his chimera friends and later about Ling - Greed just seems... Very human, just barely greedier than most. Basically, what I mean is that he's a normal guy (mentally speaking) in a family of cryptids. He stands out! And it's interesting.

ROYAI SHIP OF ALL TIME ANYWAYS. Riza is so good i love her so muchhhh!!!! She has so much depth and she constantly works to support roy in their goal to overthrow the government she is SO GOOD IM NOT SAYING ENOUGH HERE JUST KNOW I LOVE RIZA I ALSO LOVE ROY.

Okay so we all know the Dwarf on the Flask purged his sin to become the "perfect" being right, but Truth (at least in FMAB) says something along the lines that Dwarf was ignorant to think removing his sins and would make him superior to humans. So obvis we know those 7 sins are part of being human, but what if Truth was implying that the Dwarf made him incapable of becoming perfect because he removed his sin? Basically, he had no way of becoming self-actualized, because the sins were the key to obtaining virtue, as well. A quick breakdown of sins and their commonly associated opposing virtues:
Lust=Chastity, Gluttony=Temperance, Sloth=Diligence, Envy=Kindness, Greed=Charity, Pride=Humility, Wrath=Patience
For all of these, the sins in the show were defeated, in some way, by these virtues.
Lust: The virtue is usually said to be Chastity, but it's also been translated as Purity. Lust is defeated not just because of Roy, but because of Hawkeye. Hawkeye buys time for Roy to come and burn her because of her love for Roy. Her pure, unquestionable, no expectations, selfless love for him. Sex isn't part of their relationship, it's not necessary, it's just pure love, and Riza's so overcome with grief that she uselessly shoots Lust until she's out of ammo. If she hadn't done that, Roy wouldn't have been able to come and save who he loves, too.
Gluttony: Poor baby never had a chance. Temperance, aka self-restraint is usually the translation, but also Equanimity. Basically balance and peace of mind. While Gluttony gets eaten, he is absolutely wrecked because of Ling and Lan Fan. These two are the ultimate show of self-restraint and peace of mind with their method of fighting with the flow of qi. Gluttony is taken down by their temperance.
Sloth: Also straight forward, the Diligence of Olivier and Alex Armstrong, both in their personal resolve and in the literal fight with Sloth eventually takes him down for good.
Envy: Hoo boy, this messy disaster. Envy is taken down to just barely living. He's been the cause of so much pain and suffering of everyone surrounding him in his final moments, everyone should hate him, everyone should be taking turns stomping him. But instead the group stops Roy's cruelty. They show Roy Kindness when he's at his breaking point. But then Ed looks at Envy, and takes the time to understand him. Ed gives him Kindness, but specifically, Compassion. Envy is faced with this feeling that's so at odds with everything inside him that he can't bear it. He chooses to die than face that horrific extreme against what he believes he is.
Greed: My son, my boi, god he deserved better. Greed, the being that covets all and lost everything, the being that wanted the world but took the time to listen to Ling and realize he was wrong. Greed got it. Greed understood his opposing virtue. Avarice is often associated with Charity as its virtue, and Greed shows this in sharing the body with Ling, giving up control as often as he does. But Charity is also translated to Sacrifice. And well, Greed truly understood his other half. He'd obtained his self-actualization, even if it was at the end, he'd realized "I have enough."
Pride: As straight forward as this is, Edward Elric, the poor boy who learned Humility so horrifically, Humility is not just what defeats Pride, but it saves him. It's what makes him just a kid in the end. Ed literally stripped Pride of his power, of his body. He stripped him down to just a baby, and if that's not the ultimate Humility I don't know what is. Pride is able to live without his sin because he also lives with his opposing virtue.
Wrath: Terrifyingly efficient and powerful, and I think it's because Bradley himself was made human. The opposite of Wrath is associated with Patience, and we sure as hell know that he had Patience, 60 years as a humunculi in secret for that matter. I'm not actually here to talk about Bradley, kinda. Nope, we're gonna talk about Scar.
Scar has been tortured by Amestris, by Wrath; his people destroyed, his family taken from him. He has every right to want revenge for the pain caused to him and his people. Scar is consumed by his Wrath. Scar wants to burn Amestris to the ground and god do you understand him. But Scar grows, Scar learns, and in the end, with his brother's research, Scar shows mercy. The opposite virtue associated with Wrath is often Patience, but it's also been translated to Mercy. And this makes so much more sense to me, that the opposite of anger, revenge, and hatred, is stopping the pain by letting go. Scar doesn't forgive, but he shows mercy to Amestris from his Wrath. Scar being able to let go is what gives him the strength to defeat Bradley, and his own Wrath. And it gives Scar the strength to move on, too.
Tl;dr the Dwarf in the Flask is a moron who wasn't able to obtain virtue without his sin, and if he'd kept his sins he would have grown beyond perfection, he would have been human.

Just finished my yearly FMAB rewatch and I can’t stop thinking about the homunculi
Can’t stop thinking about how at first Gluttony seems childish and easily led around but when provoked he turns savage and consumes indiscriminately, and about how hunger is one of the most primal instincts a living creature possesses, and about how when Ed and Ling were stuck in Gluttony’s stomach they were nearly done in by their hunger, and how between them and Gluttony human or homunculus didn’t matter, because hunger was hunger
Can’t stop thinking about how Lust was cruel and cold and manipulative, and how she prayed upon people’s sexual desires/attraction and used it against them, and how she died in hot flames, produced by a man spurned by the death of one dear friend and the grave injury of another, and how she represented a desire for closeness, but knew nothing of it herself
And I can’t stop thinking about how Sloth was utterly alone in that tunnel for all those centuries, and how despite his slow speed, he hit hard, and how he found everything including being alive or interacting with others bothersome, and how ultimately he was done in by the tenacity of humans who wanted to continue living, who refused to give into their exhaustion when fighting him
And I’m still thinking about how in the end Wrath was contented by being tethered to nothing, to have one final fight with Scar, where name, sex, race, alliances and ‘human or homunculus’ didn’t matter in the slightest, and how he was killed by a man who had been overcome by his rage, but who had eventually learned to harness it into a positive driving force behind his values
And I can’t stop thinking about how Pride, the First Homunculus’ true form was that of a human baby, and how he would use human and homunculus alike as pawns to achieve his goals, and how Pride was destroyed by humans, because his pride in his abilities, as his superiority as a homunculus, couldn’t measure up to Ed’s will to save everyone
I can’t stop thinking about Envy, who constantly described humans as scum, yet switched between human forms, posing and acting, desiring to look ‘young and cute’ because they were disgusted by their true form as a homunculus, and how ultimately it was humans that they were jealous of, and how they pitiful and alone, at the hands of humans who all held true connections to one another
And I especially can’t stop thinking about Greed, who was so desperate to have human comrades, ones who truly cared for him, that he talked ‘lowered himself to the human level’ both in what he claimed to desire, ‘money and woman’ and through sharing a body and goals with Ling, and how despite being Greed the Avaricious he was contented in having comrades, in being connected with his friends, through the soul
And I’m also thinking about Father, Dwarf in the Flask, Homunculus, how in his attempts to become the perfect being he tried to cast aside the 7 desires that made him resemble the humans he saw as little more than energy sources, and how truthfully his desire was to have the ‘rights of man’, to be free from both the literal flask, and the metaphorical one he put in self in by deciding that being a person simply wasn’t enough
And most of all I can’t stop thinking about how Edward, sacrifices his Gate of Truth, his alchemic abilities, because he doesn’t truly need it when he has all his friends, his comrades, his connections, and they are still very much with him, and how the Truth itself tells him that’s the correct answer, and how the ‘power of friendship’ trope has been beaten to death by shounen manga but Hiromu Arakawa took it and made it into a beautiful commentary on human nature, and the fulfilment that comes from connections with others, be it familial, romantic, platonic, or of any other kind, and how her protagonist, the youngest state alchemist in history, the man who opened the Gate of Truth more times than any one else, the kid who *punched god in the face*, was never anything more than a mere, simple human

remember when i said in my post about how bido is unappreciated that id talk about why greed/bido is a good and important ship but thats a whole other post. well This is that post
the first and most important reason that greed/bido is a good ship is very simple and that reason is Bido Was In Love With Greed The Whole Time And Nobody Noticed?????? how come nobody noticed. i mean SOME people noticed but nowhere NEAR enough people noticed
when greed compliments bido for successfully proving that alphonse is just a soul bound to a suit of armor, he blushes and acts very flustered and happy. unfortunately this scene is not animated in either show (bido talking to greed is changed to be over the phone in 03, and in brotherhood the scene just gets skipped, HOWEVER theres a single shot of bidos face in one of greeds flashbacks that shows him blushing and looking directly at the camera. ie at greed)
also in the manga his first thought when the military shut down the nest was to worry about whether greed SPECIFICALLY was okay (i used this page in my other post as well but its important)
and in brotherhood he was shown to have actually followed greed through the sewers during his fight with bradley but could only watch from his hiding place as greed was defeated and taken away; remembering this is what gives him the determination to hitch a ride to central to look for him
did i mention he went all the way to central to find him!!! clinging to a MILITARY TRUCK no less. as a very obvious chimera if he had been found by any of those soldiers it would have been horrible for him and every other time we ever saw bido faced with danger he ran away from it. but he was brave For Greed. he went into the labyrinth under central For Greed, and didnt try to escape until he was convinced greed wasnt there. and when it turned out he WAS there (and had lost his memory and had been trying to kill him) he immediately dropped his guard and walked closer to him because that was greed and he trusted him despite everything that had just happened. in the manga he grabs onto greeds coat as he dies and it is just about the saddest thing ive ever seen in my whole life
and then of course greed starts physically shaking because what he just did was so awful his body knows he fucked up before his mind even remembers Why it was fucked up and he cradles bidos body in his arms and screams. unfortunately if we are to acknowledge bido as the gay icon he was, we also must acknowledge that he was buried
(by all rights bido SHOULD have survived. where is the fanfiction where he survives fullmetal alchemist fandom or are you too busy writing the same royai-gets-married-and-has-babies fic over and over again. actually never mind i greatly prefer that to all the pedophilia. but thats another Other post, that unlike this incredibly niche topic some other people have almost definitely made before me)
the thing about grido is you could make a huge tragic thing about it being unrequited and frankly thats Fair, greed does not seem one to settle down in a relationship and bido likely has a lot of self worth issues that would prevent him from confessing his feelings. but you cannot deny that greed cared about him. he praises him, he pats him on the head (!!)
he COMPLETELY breaks down after he realizes he killed him. bido was so important to greed, as were the rest of the chimeras of course but i think theres a valid argument to be made that bido in particular was special to him. theyve got a few things in common actually that i find interesting:
both like to just chill on roofs??? when greed is in lings body he sometimes just hangs out on top of a roof. bido does this too
they could have hung out on roofs together.......maybe thats why greed likes to be up there. because he hung out with bido on roofs a lot. please consider this possibility
both of them are accidentally rude to children. the same children in fact
greed is like 200 and looks 30 while bido is middle-aged and people think he is a baby for some reason?????
okay this is just straight up a headcanon and has no actual basis in the text or subtext of fma but I Think Bido Is Trans and was cast out by his family in his youth and greed would understand that experience!!!! having left his own terrible family because they wanted him to be someone he wasnt
and then there are the differences:
greed is very outgoing and bido is mostly pretty anxious, though he has outbursts of confidence; that might be because greed being nice to him has built up his self-esteem (the way he calls himself cool/awesome when he escapes from the elrics, directly followed by greed complimenting his skills, really makes me think this is the case)
one is tall and lean........the other...is short and fat....... i know its cliche but let me have this
bido overthinks things. greed is a jock. with their powers combined they can do things at a mostly reasonable pace (as long as bido doesnt just go along with whatever greed wants which is probably most of the time what happens)
bido is outwardly inhuman and weird-looking but is incredibly caring and hard-working and loyal and sweet. greed is the sexiest motherfucker alive but hes literally the personification of a deadly sin and at his core he is technically just a rock made of pain. but below these layers both of them want the exact same thing which is to care about others and be cared for in return
also you know that post about how ships between immortal people and super young adults (or worse, teenagers) are OUT and instead we should have stories about immortal people dating 40-something accountants. bido is the 40-something accountant. except not an accountant. you know what im getting at though hes an Established Adult
and bido DESERVES it, he deserves to be loved by the person he cares about more than anything, he has been through so much and gotten nothing but pain and he needs something good for a change!!! and greed DESERVES someone who will love him with all his heart and make him feel wanted no matter what. just, listen to me okay, they would make each other so happy
so!!! there are MANY reasons this ship is interesting and a million different ways you could go about exploring it and there is just NONE of it out there. for some reason the chimera that gets shipped the most with greed is dolcetto (though ive seen martel as well) and i think that is probably because they are more attractive to people (and also id wager more than a few dollars people simply see a dogman and his boss and go wild for the petplay angle). like you dont see any greed/roa either and thats very telling since roa appears with the other two almost every time and nothing about him is different except hes older and not as. pretty i guess???? in my humble onion hes hotter than either dolcetto or martel but thats neither here nor there
the important thing about bidos relationship to greed is that he might not have been transmuted with an animal with a strong sense of loyalty, but he didnt NEED to be, to be loyal to greed. he loved him entirely because he was human. and in the end he did the most for him out of any of the chimeras. unfortunately it was via dying but through the power of imagination we can collectively ignore that and pretend both he and greed survived, and greed went back to his original sexy, sexy body, and they made out on a roof for several consecutive hours. thats how im coping at least. thank you so much for listening to my unhinged rambling about lizard man who dies of fullmetal alchemist (gay edition)

i love the homunculi so much because theyre a) evil and badass, b) because theyre basically a messed up family and the way they interact is hilarious and c) i get so emotional because theyre literally just people with feelings, envy and gluttony were so angry when lust died, none of them looked happy when greed died even though he betrayed them and greed sacrificed himself to save ling, and if they all got a real chance they could have been actually happy :( also they on the good side is funny
oh the homunculi are Excellent antagonists and I love each and every one of them to bits - I gotta say going into this series knowing the main antags were based on the seven deadly sins my expectations were not high because I thought they were gonna be sterotypical/one-dimensional as hell, but then lo and behold arakawa actually found a way to make that trope /WORK/ and frankly the best thing about it was making them not human representations of sin but representations of what an inhuman creature thinks sin is which is waaaay more fun and interesting and means you can squeeze character analysis out of them like overripe lemons it’s gr8

I JUST NEED TO GUSH ABOUT HOW AWESOME GREED AND LING ARE TO SOMEBODY!
BROTHERHOOD SPOILERS AHEAD
Like FIRST OF ALL Ling retained enough sanity to withstand literal THOUSANDS of screaming souls that a philosopher’s stone is made of, like do you how TAXING that would be on your mind and how hard it would be to keep sane while you are literally housing multiple voices of agony inside your brain???? like BRUH. ALSO GREED. GREED. My baby my sunshine my BELOVED GREED. He ALLOWED LING TO TAKE OVER SOMETIMES. Like, this mans lost his memory and is completely loyal to “Father” and yet he still had some semblance of not wanting to be entirely alone and didn’t completely cast ling out. Logically wouldnt that be a bit more of a threat to who he is a character? Oh ho one would think so but no! Greed as a character is greedy only because he feels thats what hes supposed to be, but in reality he just wants friends and people to care about deeply. Material items sure are great and he loves them (headcannon his love language is gifts) but he doesnt NEED them. He NEEDS to feel loved, he NEEDS to feel like a leader, he NEEDS to feel important to a group that he cares abo(Hence why he and ling took over Ed’s group during the teamup).
I also believe that the way Greed regauned his memories was entirely Ling’s doing. Like, normally Greed wouldnt have regained his memories but bored ling went digging through and found them buried and realized greed was actually wonderful to the devil’s nest gang. SPEAKING OF THE DEVIL’S NEST GANG! They were all chimeras, EXPERIMENTS THAT WERE TORTURED AND KILLED BY THE ALCHEMISTS AND THE GOVERNMENT and greed saved them. He took them in when no one else would and they were like a family which made Bido’s death not only hit harder for the audience, but for Greed himself. He DESPERATELY cared for those chimeras and they were his most important “possessions” (headcannon that he wouldnt know how else to describe how important they were because hes a homunculus) and so him remembering (forcibly by ling the fuckin CHAMP) was what really broke him I think. He remembered why he left father’s side, he wasnt some mindless soldier. He was more. He may be a cocky bastard but he CARES. I love Greed because though he acts all swaggerous and confident at his core hes scared of loosing those he’s close to.
I feel that if you were to be upset or show pain in front of Greed, he would drop everything to patch you up and make sure okay. He’d drop his cocky demeanor and he can be dead serious at times and he would have the most upmost concern for what is hurt and what you need to feel better. I feel that he would hold you in a deep embrace and promise you that everything would be alright and fine because you are his and he doesnt let bad things happen to his possessions, that you’re that important to him. His kisses would be soft and gentle with that crooked raven’s beak nose that’s probably been broken and rebuilt so many times he cant remember how to heal it properly anymore.
All he was looking for in life was friendship and in the end he found it in ling and cared so deeply for ling that when he sacrificed himself to save the world he finally didnt feel an empty void anymore. He no longer felt greedy because he had found what he most desperately desired. GODDAMNIT SO ANYWAYS THATS MY ESSAY TO WHY GREED IS MY NUMBER ONE F/O
