Hm... I'm feeling benevolent...

Guys sorry, I am not immune to Hazbin/Helluva propaganda. I am also not immune to criticizing the designs and character motivations.

So! Let’s start with one of the most redesigned characters in the show: Beelzebub^^

So, sorta hot take, I really like the idea behind Beelzebub in the show. Ik "boo tomato tomato," but hear me out. I like how she is meant represent the hellhounds she rules over (ik she actually is a reference to Jay Jay, but let me have this connection PLEASE). However, the source material is very bug-like and compact.

The HB Beelzebub is NOT that bug like. Or compact.

With this redesign, I decided to pick all the stuff I liked about the og, and what I wanted to see more of. I kept her colors and general vibe but made her more built like a bumble bee with more inspo from the fly Beelzebub.

This is what I got.

DESIGN EXPLANATION:

Anyways, I always imagined Beelzebub to be, y'know, more BEE like. The show did not give me that, so I did it myself. I made her wings bigger, gave her an actual bee tail and face (with the proboscis and stinger too), and more stripes and fluff. I also made her small and slightly chubby. Gotta hone the bumble bee.

I thought the hair made the original design too cluttered, but I wanted to keep the party colors. To compromise, I stuck all the goop in her tail. It sort of works like a firefly's abdomen and a lava lamp. I also nullified her cloths, so they would blend more with the body and help pop the neon colors in her eyes, antenna, and tail.

When she stands at her normal form, she is the smallest of the sins. But when she is in her "true" form (that I have not illustrated yet), she is the biggest of the sins. This is a reference to how gluttony starts small but gets really large over time, both mentally and physically.

As for additional details, I wanted to keep her "foxness". So in a brilliant brainstorm of ideas, I came up with the concept of "Masks". Basically, all the sins I'll redraw will have them. The masks are meant not only to represent their hellborn, but to represent how the sins pretend to be good things at first.

Stuff like "Rest a little more, it won't hurt" and "Be proud and don't care for what others say" are how they present on the surface, but if you continue those mindsets in a toxic way, it turns into sloth and pride and stuff instead of self-care and being proud of things.

For Bee specifically, it's "Have a little more, you deserve it!" and she has a hell-hound/fox mask. This also feeds into her personality change.

PERSONALITY CHANGES:

In the og, she's a party animal who cares for... moderation??? Yeah, I hate this about Helluva Boss. Why is it so hard to write *sshole/negligent people in power and why is it only Mammon who's allowed to be like this? Give me more morally dark grey powerful people!

That's where Bee is different for the redesign. She runs te lowest ring in hell and is in charge of hellhounds, the lowest species in hell. B/c of this, she is much more lenient compared to the higher ranked sins in hell, which is why she is often seen talking and hanging out with lower classes. (She gets slack for this from the other sins). She is also the only sin who has had open relations with lower class citizens all the way down to hellhounds. However, none of them last. Most of her relations outside of the sins are one-night stands and flings.

As for how she sorta sucks: she is still a party animal, yes, but she purposely chooses to be blind and ignore all the suffering that occurs at the parties. People have fun, but they overindulge, and as a result get sick, sad, and violent. However, Bee leaves the parties before they get this way. She does not want to see it. She is negligent. When she comes back to the party aftermaths, she quickly gets her workers to clean everything, so she does not have to discover anything gruesome and sad. She just wants to live, party, and see people "happy". (Sort of like Gatsby's parties minus the pining for a single woman who does not care for her).

... I wonder what would happen if that mental image she had shattered? I guess only the future will tell.

Ayyyyyyyy what a rough time we are going through right now ? Not really what everyone hoped for huh ? Tangle why... oh dear..), i had some great conversations with friends over the recent Arc and i bet this will be rewarding at the end of it. Really looking forward to more Character development for Whisper and Tangle. Rough road but we get there. Kudos to @scurvypiratehog​ :) ! Always enjoy our long, in detail, all about Snoc Convos. Anyway, i usually don’t share a lot of early sketches but i thought, thanks to the heavy circumstances right now, why not. The Art above is a bit older. I planned on finishing it last year but as many of my sketches i never really found the Time to do so. The Inspiration comes from this:

I love the Message behind the third eye kiss. Especially the Part about healing and brought in combination with Whisper, spoke to me. The Plan was to maybe finish this for Valentines Day. But i gotta be real here, i’m going through a rough time in RL right now as well, which makes it hard to work on more Art. There will be better times too though and i guess this one really will be  my next Piece for this year :> I have Stuff planned, just waiting for the Art Drive to fully come back. I don't think I write that quickly anymore, I used to churn out a ton of fic a day and now I go long stretches without. But good practice is my favorite site ever, typetrigger.com ; it's what generates a lot of what I tag as microfics. It gives you a prompt that you have to fill in 300 words or less, and the prompts cycle out every four hours so if you want to write something you gotta do it then.

I've been using that site for 10 years, and if you look at my profile I've done over 500 of the typetriggers! I think it helps with getting over the "must be perfect" mindset which traps a lot of people and also feels like the writing equivalent of a sketch. Here's a scene, here's a though, here's a bit of passing dialogue...and maybe you can build something more after.

Writing tips in general - the old favorite that no one loves to hear is just to write a lot and read a lot. All writing helps, even if it's not progressing the word count on a project. Write a poem. Write a journal entry. Narrate to yourself as you're doing chores. Annoy your friends by talking in rhyming couplets. Etc.

I love to write dialogue and there is SO much unpublished, unrefined fic I've dropped in chats and saved in notepad files that amounts to this format:

I can find files like this for every fandom I wrote for, all the way back to Fullmetal Alchemist. It's just how my creative process works, lol.

Do you have any recommendations for character modeling in blender?

Ooh boy I never know how to respond to questions like that, but I'm gonna try my best and list some stuff which helped me personally, so hopefully this will be helpful to you guys too.

A lot of what im gonna say is probably gonna sound really generic but generally speaking just watching one tutorial series and calling it a day isn't gonna cut it.

Something that helped me a whole lot was having a clear goal in mind (like I remember the first thing I wanted to do was translate my OCs in 3D). Picking something I was invested in is what pushed me to do my own research (and now its Deltarune fan animations lol). Knowing how to maintain motivation and going in with the right mindset is the most important thing imo.

I use Blender for my 3D work, which is free and open source. I personally prefer it over paid software like Maya or 3dsMax, especially for modeling and sculpting (I remember I had to use Max and Maya for a while but overall it was a pretty agonizing experience to be honest, so I switched back to Blender, which just feels a whole lot easier to use for me personally lol, but really at the end of the day just pick the software you want. This is just my personal preference). If you have a potato laptop like me, I definitely advise you to use Blender tho as it is very lightweight compared to other 3D programs, plus it can do the same things and then some. Not to mention there are way more free resources on Blender stuff so it's easier to get access to the info you need. Anyways Blender-simping over, moving on!

Tutorials are always a great idea, but you're also gonna have to learn how to do problem-solving. 3D can be a really technical and rigid medium, so being patient and knowing how to do independent learning is very important. Take a look at box-modeling, sculpting, texturing and procedural shading. Unfortunately that's gonna involve a lot of annoying situations and moments of immeasurable pain, but once you're more familiar with how things work, it's super fun and rewarding!

Don't forget to have fun and experiment! It's easy to get lost and overwhelmed by the technical aspects of 3D but it's important to just let go and make silly things. Also talking to other 3d artists with similar interests helps a ton, especially more experienced ones but I am aware not everyone has access to that (plus not everyone might want that, esp when you're an introvert like me haha!)

If you gotta sell your soul to a corporation then focusing on one particular subset is gonna be useful for animation jobs, as this is what most studios want. Some artists might like specializing into just one area, and that's totally fine but for me who prefers to be a generalist, it just kinda ruins my joy for 3D to restrict myself to just one part of it. Plus if you enjoy doing what you do, you tend to learn a lot faster anyway.

This might be a bit of an uncommon take, but one of the most stifling pieces of advice I have received from industry 3D artists is to only focus on one thing (as in, only skill up your UV-unwrapping, or only do rigging, only do hard-surface modeling, only do organic environment modeling and so on). NUH-UH! Just do what you want fam. Make the spoingle-boingles pet cats. Focus on the things you like. Make barney the dinosaur destroy the whole set. Model, rig and animate them if you want. Really, just have fun. Obviously you gotta do some self-checks and see where you need to improve, and where your strengths and weaknesses are, and focusing on those areas can be very helpful. Just make sure you're having a good time doing it, and don't be too harsh on yourself. Definitely take a break if you're overwhelmed.

You don't have to be able to draw to be good at character modeling but making turnaround sketches helps me a whole lot whenever I make 3D characters. Knowing how to draw will also benefit your sense of design and shapes, as you can use your drawing skills for texturing and adding your own flair to your models.

Another thing I would do is look at other people's 3D models and study the topology and the way they model things. This also helps a lot with motivation. Obviously you don't wanna copy, just study the way other people model things and see what other talented artists come up with! There are a bunch of free Blender rigs you can download and study on your own, not to mention useful videos and streams on YouTube. The Rain and Snow rigs are pretty awesome. Some of this stuff is behind a paywall but I recommend checking out the free resources of the "Settlers" project for highly cartoony modeling and rigging (this playlist is very useful, I didn't watch all of it but some parts have been pretty inspirational to me). Also just following 3D artists you like and looking at their art for inspiration will help you stay motivated.

(I agree it’s superior to the 20K Grem and most Chams, but with a single colored winged dog with a halo, that’s not saying much. At least Lu is going to do extra art due to the high price, more than what a lot of CS owners would do…)

When it comes to high-cost CS, I often hear shit like, “support artists!” and “they gotta eat, too”, “get that coin!”. Or whatever excuse. Mother fuckers spend shittons on CS designs. You aren’t supporting shit. You’re buying into clout and manipulative FOMO tactics. OK, yeah, someone’s making rent or whatever, but admit it: if that $900 Fooling (or whatever) wasn’t a CS, you’d be cackling at the person who bought it.

CRICKETS when artists who don’t use manipulative FOMO tactics put out comms or adopts. Sometimes even relatively popular artists struggle. So much for supporting artists, right?

I want to use this opportunity to show you what $900 can get you in art if you’re so inclined to kick clout-chasing to the curb, but still want to shake dollars at artists. The artists I’ve selected are random faves of mine and I’m not affiliated with them. They’re chosen to give you an idea of what you could get for $900 instead of a fucking dog.

sariyaart on Carrd: $900 is almost certainly going to get you a painted full body. PAINTED. As in, fully-rendered, in a mostly-realistic style.

Aspeneyes on Weebly: $900 will get you a full illustration since these start around $400

Nebquerna on Carrd: $900 could get you two or three concept sheets or custom designs

BlindCoyote: $900 is about enough for a full illustration, and definitely enough for a shaded colored sketch

Godbirdart: $900 will get you a full illustration

I know we often compare prices of stuff other than art to demonstrate what a rip off CS is. I think it’s even more demonstrative to compare prices (and quality!) to what other artists do. The artists I’ve listed above are professional freelancers, by the way, either part time or full time.

I remember someone once joking that the 20K thing was all Caravan’s fault because no artist could be expected to produce work good enough to justify that amount of money. Aside from the fact that the artist shouldn’t fucking take that money, then, and show some integrity, I guarantee you any one of those artists above would produce something spectacular. Hell, at that price, they’d probably agree to some sort of commercial rights.

But yeah, $900 for a dog with wings and a halo is totally at the same level of these other artists.

a note to add to this is that cs often artificially inflate value with traits and artificial scarcity while also actively undervaluing other artist’s. they’re even aware that the artificial scarcity is the highest reason people buy since it’s developed this toxic mindset that no one else can have the same idea.  if people can make the same thing then they won’t buy theirs, not because people might buy from the merit of their work but because they slapped on so many labels such as ‘official’ and ‘rare traits’

have the gall to cry about having to make so many adopts on a base while people who buy them draw entire fullbody drawings with backgrounds for 5 pieces of artificial currency

most cs are so deathly afraid of making things easy to get because it’s hyped up by the artificial scarcity. would cypherus grems be as tempting if people could just make one? would a cow girl oc perk your interest as much if it wasn’t followed by ‘biia-made mal’accilin’? these artists are genuinely skilled and talented and DO deserve a high degree of respect skill-wise to get where they are, but they grow themselves higher by pushing others down and that’s just not right

I was able to work on this much sooner than I thought!! don’t worry, I plan on doing all the suggestions (and maybe more, we’ll see) I just got a bit of a plan for how I want to go about it :)

It’s been nice working on this series. I find it so easy to overthink my process and art, constantly trying to make things perfect or fit certain criteria. Sure, by nature of being a series, I am thinking about matching it to the other pieces. But being able to step back from the usual worrying about nit-picky details and just drawing fun animal on recycled material has a great. It feels like i’m making art for the sake of it again, something I haven’t felt like I’ve done a whole lot of the past couple years or so. I gotta say, I can probably thank the “daily” drawing challenge I did on my instagram story for putting me in this mindset!!

Hoping to get the other two animals I have planned done soon!! I’ve mainly been working on them to take a break from assignments, and considering finals are approaching, there will be lots to take breaks from (if I can afford to haha). Hope you’re all doing well!!

I GET HOW U FEEL SO MUCH. truth is back in liiike 2020 i was exclusively creating art for this blog in a 'What Does My Audience Want?' mindset, and if you do want to get into fields that center around Art/Design for An Audience theres no harm in doing that in moderation(but back in 2020 it felt like all i did was make art for other people lmao). one major thing that helped me make this blog more about My Art for Me and less My Art for Someone Else was rethinking how and why i made art. my art was 'the thing i have to put on my blog today' but nowadays its more 'this project im doing to learn XYZ while also drawing what i want to draw' (i also have more projects and ideas overall because of it!!!! thats also something i noticed just now lol) that shadow gijinka i just posted used 2 be a ditched sketch from. last week? i forgot abt until i lined, colored, and rendered it just for fun (and to do some more paint-adjacent rendering cuz thats my jam) since i do plan to get into commission work this year i am aware i gotta prioritize more Art Studies and 'Learning how to draw for other people, figure out what they want, etc.' or whatever. uhhh tldr i wanted to get better at art without hating art so i do studies with shadow the hedgehog and anime girls.

crashmax

crash goes nowhere without his sketchbook + an overstuffed pencil case of assorted colored pencils. he sketches to center himself. at some point he notices maxwell freakin' the fuck out and tells him to sit his ass down and color before his blood pressure explodes his ass. crash provides an inked piece from earlier in his sketchbook and max just. sits and colors while crash continues sketching.

max doesnt realize how fast coloring calmed him down until way later. but it worked, and it worked well, and max is mad about it. not mad enough to say no a few weeks later when crash offers him another inked piece to color.

it becomes part of a ritual for them. crash sketches and inks. max colors it in. they listen to broadway soundtracks or a podcast or weird youtube videos. They vibe. It’s a good time overall.

Max tries to roast Crash’s hometown when they fight in Crash’s home turf, but Crash just keeps nodding and going “so true bestie” because Crash loves making fun of his hometown and will do so at every possible opportunity. Max wants to strangle him.

Two most annoying people to watch a horror movie with. They can quote the entirety of the first saw movie by heart. They will do this whenever bored.

When there’s a show on Crash’s home turf, Crash will always try to drag Punk out to his favorite board game cafe. Crash and Punk are also the two most annoying people to play board games with, because they both subscribe to the “I don’t need to win, I just need to fuck everyone else over” mindset of playing games. You will make the mistake of playing Catan with them exactly once. Only tried and true masochists will opt for a second game

Speaking of home turf— Punk is the one who gets dragged along to go dirtbiking while they’re in Crash’s hometown. Crash is nice and drives much slower than usual so Punk can get used to the track and feel comfortable

Crashhausen

As avid collectors of toys, Crash and Danhausen spend a lot of time together just browsing Facebook marketplace and looking at listings together. Sometimes they find good shit, but usually they just end up laughing at people being weird or dumb

When Crash decides to try his hand at sculpting weird little creatures, he gifts his first attempt at a not-deer figurine to Danhausen. The hooves are made of teeth. Danhausen named him Reginald and displays him proudly with his action figures

the trickster&demon alliance is strong. Danhausen curses you, Crash dabs on you, and their collective power gives you erectile dysfunction for at least three days. do not fuck with them less you want a wizard curse upon your penis

In support of evilhausen, crash rocks up in black and red gear wearing a necklace of fangs and carrying a realistic plush Canadian goose, which is the most evil thing he could think of

How do you get inspiration to draw stuff?

Well, I could say that I consume a lot of stuff that I like and get me in the mood to draw new things but honestly I really recomend having a dirty sketchbook.

One you have NON respect for it, (I use mine as a cupholder and as a tool to smash clay sometimes) like you gotta almost insult that bitch.

You can have others sketchbooks that are more expensive and fancy buy at least ONE that is your bitch.

Sooo eventually, since you don’t care about the output of anything that comes from that sketch, you start to get brave and a lil crazy, so the creativity starts to flow. What am I gonna lose after all? I dont care if it’s good or bad, let’s try something I’v never done, something whit out anatomy or sence, whatever nothing matters here !

This mindset has reallyyyy help me a lot because I get inspired by the feeling of random freedom that I created, no longer relying on pinterest or other artist that much. I feel like I’m free of doing whatever garbage I want because is for me and only me ! And that estimulates me so much whit new and crazy ideas. So after almost abusing my sketch during the day, I can use the ideas made there for a good, clean, and finished piece ( in the expensive sketch jaja).

So yeah, just don’t be afraid of braking the rules sometimes! Give you the chance to make whatever you want regardles of what your art teacher or youtube tutorial says, at least from time to time !

As an avid reader of "X Reader" fics, I wanna defend it a tad (though I never insert MYSELF into the "reader" seat because hella ace/aro, I usually shove one of my multitudes of OCs into the seat instead)

I also enjoy the comment about not hating "X OC" fics, but they tack on qualifiers like "They have to be paired with side characters and not the main characters".

At the end of the day, we are all cringe. You don't have to love "X reader" or "X oc" fics, but ya also don't need to be this rude about it. Let people have fun in the ways they wanna have fun, we're all just trying to survive in this world

Didn't intend for this hiatus to go as long as it did, but here we are. Also this is long so it's gonna be under the readmore. If you want the short answer: I'm back, but still as slow as ever.

Tbh I wanted to come back once I got into the routine that I wanted (the 2 pic, 1 fic, 1 profile upload per week plan), but the mindset hasn't been able to kick in as of yet. Trying to adjust in the new temporary place hasn't exactly worked out, and it's still gonna be a while before we move into a potential NEW place, so I haven't been able to focus on the creation stuff. I just now got back into drawing again.. only for my tablet to fuck up, which means I have to get a new one. (if I get paid a lot next week, then I should be able to buy a replacement. If you wanna help me so I can buy it sooner, you can donate to my kofi, but you don't have to-) So the most I can offer drawing-wise is doodles/sketches from my book, which I don't mind, but it feels incomplete.

As for writing.. that's taking even longer. I feel like I'm just writing the same info over and over in my docs cuz it's the only info that I can focus on. I've been developing the Symbol au a lot, as that's been my biggest focus, and I have a bunch of ideas for it.. just gotta get it written in a way that makes sense. That's kinda the reason I decided to make the blog despite not being 100%: it might help me get my writing in order. Idk. This is hard.

I'm going to be focusing my content upload to here instead of twit because twit is just a shitshow. Drama, hateful people, people going to the extreme over every little thing.. just constant negativity. It's genuinely draining, even though none of it is targeted towards me. It's just twit shoving that kinda shit in my face. So I wanna focus on tmblr instead, since I can actually manage what I see better. Hope that's okay for you guys.

I know I'm not alone as an artist struggling with social media/following nowadays. There's an abundance of absolutely AMAZING artists. I'm not good on the marketing side of this personally.

Basically what I'm saying is this is starting to impact my mental health pretty bad in that I'm feeling like I'm not good enough (this is just me getting my thoughts out into the void, bear with me, I'm not asking for reassurance here. Heck ty if you're even reading <3). So I... think I need to change up my approach and my mindset.

If I post here it's just gonna be studies and sketches for a while. I know a lot of people, no matter how many followers or notes they have, contend with the "I'm not good enough" thing and it's something I've gotta learn to deal with myself. So my plan is to stop thinking about posting for a bit and just enjoy art and learning art for the simple fact that I LOVE doing it. I got some new books. I'm gonna sit and follow some tutorials. It's a good outlet for me, and it always feels great to see progress, and I'm going to try to start seeing my social media as a way to look at my progress rather than me hoping to turn it into a career.

So I wanna learn how to do environments. Perspective. I wanna get better at painting and inking and try a bunch of different colouring methods and processes and see what I find fun. I'm... actually excited to try.

why is the twitter art community so insane literally the worst parts of deviantart and the worst parts of twitter combining i think like alfkakkd every few weeks i swear people have like art advice discourse and people scream at each other about the best way to improve at art and for whiney beginner artists to stop harrassing their replies and that if they want to get better they should just practice and also obviously people get very angry at people who have never claimed to be art teachers offering simple advice like practice because theyre sorta at a loss idk its just deranged and i cannot look away i know i should stop being on twitter evil website but its enthralling sometimes but its really so depressing the way the gatekeepy and insane dont steal my secrets just grind at art mindset of deviantart has survived with none of the incredible tutorials and knowledge sharing that also somehow managed to coexist alongside that weird closed community and hmm the lack of like spaces for total beginner artists to easily share stuff in a way that puts them on equal footing with all other artists like that was something nice about deviantart all those groups that accepted pretty much all art and so u could have beautiful fully rendered complex art right next to like some 11 year olds lovingly sketched out colored pencil doodle and like its so distressing in general i guess the entire like never stop the grind always improve mindset being seen as normal and not idk if beginners truly want advice good lord just like find things ur passionate about art should be fun its so insane why is art not seemingly fun for people in these places i guess its the ever growing encroachment of trying to professionalize and everyone hoping the internet will be the gateway to great jobs in art when most of the time thats like an illusion and its also just so crazy cuz i dont even feel like its that hard to give like mediocre art advice that just u know creates a more positive community instead of just being like practice train fight whatever thats it idk remind people to draw things theyre passionate about and that genuinely enjoying what ur doing matters not just pushing towards a skill that will make you totally fucking miserable and idk most people posting art online or taking small commissions arent gonna be incredible professional quality artists but thats literally ok and can be a wonderful good thing to just have a closely held enjoyable thing and like idk u gotta learn to see art is literally not simply about motor skills thats whats also so crazy to me is people seem to focus on improving like the motor skills of physically drawing and not like composition and learning your own taste and discovering what artists you like and admire and study what makes their stuff work things that can be done when ur in an art block mode u know i gotta know how to see like understanding colors and how to frame things and composition are all things that u can like learn to see and grow ur skills by simply seeing and knowing with purpose and implementing that like theres so many levels you can be technically skilled and not put an image together nicely idk so many things that can also u know translate to photography fashion food daily life like whatever this is a total tangent and lord knows my composition sucks but alskkska theres such an aggressive anti copying mentality i think also people dont understand how to use references or how to grab from a lot of different inspiration idk whatever i love to bitch!!
