FNV AU where Ulysses delivers the chip as intended but instead of getting shot he just absolutely rocks Benny's shit and moves on.

The people of Goodsprings are kind to me, but they will not fulfill my purpose of being. They are irrelevant to my mission, but I will leave them with this gift of protection. Using him as courier rather than NPC always feels odd. He canNOT believe he's gotten discharged so quickly, or experienced any complications despite lacking immediate care. He can't tell if he has elevated paranoia from PTSD, brain damage induced psychosis, or is entirely reasonable in his numerous fears related to medical complications.

He's expecting to experience a hematoma related stroke at any moment, and thus both checking himself in reflective surfaces while pocketing anticoags any time he sees them. Goodsprings settlers can see him pausing regularly doing little self set tests trying to gage if he's about to die or not.

Bethesda is not trying to make the West look like the East coast in terms of appearance and lifestyle.

The only time we see a Fallout 4 or 3 like town is Filly and that’s a one time thing. Yeah it doesn’t make sense but it’s similar to Junktown.

As for the idea that since Shady Sands was bombed that means the entire West coast was knocked down to how it was during Fallout 1. Shady Sands is only one city in the NCR. Yeah it was the first capital but the survivors are doing well in Vault 4 and will probably rebuild one day. We also never see the rest of the Boneyard or other NCR places. So Reno, San Fran, Arroyo, etc are most likely still okay.

As for New Vegas Strip it relied heavily on tourism and trade from California. So it makes sense it would suffer. If the theories are true and House won the game then the destruction could be from citizens from the other parts of New Vegas tired of how the Strip acts. Again, NV is only one city in Nevada. Goodsprings and other towns are probably okay.

The term “War never changes” applies with this show as well. Yes the West Coast rebuilt but all it takes is the cycle of violence to spark and it’s back to square one for some people.

@mundanewarden has been replaying 4 while i've been on this run of nv, and we keep complaining about how these areas where people have lived for centuries are still dirty, covered in garbage/scrap, and otherwise look more immediately post-apocalyptic rather than ~200 years post-post-apoc

sure, there are places that haven't been reclaimed or extensively picked over by scavengers that might still look pretty gnarly, but high-population areas should look... well, like there are people actively living there—people who will put effort into not just basic comforts and tidiness, but who will decorate and personalize their living spaces. why are half the folks in ~the great green jewel of the commonwealth~ sleeping on cardboard in the rain? why are most of the beds just stained, bare mattresses? i know to an extent the answer is engine limitations and time restraints, but the point stands.

that goodsprings mod does a fantastic job imo of preserving the vibe of "this is a wasteland fundamentally changed by nuclear war," and "200+ years after the war, people have rebuilt and care about art and clean living spaces."
