The city of Berkeley, CA made it illegal to award live fish as prizes in 2017.
I spoke with the individual who proposed the law, and we talked about ways that people could attempt to propose something similar in their own cities.
One of the intentions of the Berkeley ordinance was to serve as model legislation for other cities.
If you're interested in learning more about the law and ways that you could encourage your local government to adopt a similar ordinance, you can watch the full interview on YouTube:

The interview has a lot of useful information in general for how to engage with your local government and advocate for change in your community -- not just on this issue but with other causes as well.
If you think you might attempt this in your community or want to talk about it more please feel free to email: [email protected]
does anyone have any recommendations on books that have information on goldfish breeds and their origins? bonus if they have more info on japanese and chinese breeds. these are the goldfish books that i already own.
The first two are older. The second is from yesterday.
They both turned a year old this summer and are almost 5 inches long including their tails (I know you typically measure the body and the tail separately but whatever lol)
I love my beautiful babies, Shiva (ryukin) and Wednesday (black Moore).
For the past month or more, Goldeen had been laying on the floor of the tank, unable to have a normal life. I tried switching her diet. I tried more veggies. I pulled her out of the main tank every few days to help her eat her portion since she couldn't get around. She started getting fin rot from laying on the tank floor, and I even made her a little contraption to help her float.
In the past week she has not been wanting to eat even with assistance, and was starting to go lateral. I knew it was time.
I did a necropsy on her myself and found many tiny nodules all over her kidneys and liver. My guess is some kind of metastatic disease rather than infectious since the other fish have no problems. I think she was beyond help with how widespread it was.
Goldeen was with me for almost 2 years. We went through many jobs and schools and trips and changes. And she was a wonderful little fish.
