Gold Tutorial

hiiiii i got asked for how i color gold. tbh most of the time i just blob shapes in but i can try to explain my process too <:v

(i was trying to write more b4 giving up bc my handwriting is a mess)

here is an elf ear to start with! i just paint on top of my sketch for gold but feel free to line art or do whatever is your normal process

we need to keep in mind gold is reflective! so while picking a light source keep in mind there will be light bouncing back. typically i do this by not coloring the shadows all the way to the edge, but if there are multiple sources be ready for some bounce light action too

heres some colors! the second lightest shade is the base color we'll be working with. feel free to make the gold cool or warm toned, i just usually make my gold warm toned. in theory this also works with rose gold and silver, so feel free to play around with colors!

we're gonna keep in mind the light source, which i will be using the same as the example photo roughly. again i'm really messy with gold i just slap it on on top and it usually works okay but refine the shapes if you wanna!

first shadows! i keep these towards the middle to build shape. playing with different shapes of shadows will give different form to the metal but tbh.... i build most of my form in the highlights

second shadows: i focus these usually closer to the light source, but you can also do darker near the rebound light. again, try not to color directly to the edge to keep it looking very shiny

darkest shadows! like before, but smaller. here you can also add in different colors blobbed in the shadows if you want. i find its easiest to see reflections in the 'shadowed' parts of metal. add in your character's hair color, clothing color, or even the bg color if you want!

example with my nerevar picture of the reflections: you can see the blueish-grey of his collar in the gold to give it more dimension! even if you're working with abstract shapes it can help sell the illusion with more detail.

next up is highlights which i use a blending mode for (actually every highlight in anything i draw uses it but i feel for metal it REALLY helps): Add (glow)

or at least, it's called that in CSP. in other programs it might have a different name.

first highlights i like to draw rays of light from the light source and blend the parts furthest from the light. you can curve these according to shape but tbh most of the time i just do this. or you can softly add it in very blended like the nerevar picture above for a brighter look

second highlights: i add them in around the top and bottom. keep it organic really if im being honest.

ANDDDDD UR DONE! it should hopefully look like metal. tbh i have no idea what im doing <:v

This was requested of me a while ago, so apologies for the wait! In this video I cover my entire process when it comes to coloring/drawing gold. I did my best to explain in-depth and detail how light, shadows, contrast, and color work together to create a polished gold look, applicable to any metal in art. The demo gave me the biggest autism event ever /pos when that layering backgrounds came on. I was stunned and had a huge art nerd out over it. THAT REMINDS ME. how did you do the backgrounds in this?? the photo realistic ones? I especially like to hear it when something I've made helps someone else feel like making something, too. ^u^ Feel free to open up the script.rpy file in a text editor (or just download Ren'py!) and see how it works! The Parallax backgrounds might be a little complicated if it's your first time, but you can always hold onto the file as a reference text for later!

Backgrounds can be tricky! While I love it when I have the time to paint from scratch, my solo-dev form will wither to dust if I try that every time! So it's very important to learn how to use photographs effectively.

I always start with a photo I have permission to use. For these ones, I went to a local movie theater, took some shots, and rapidly chickened out due to social anxiety. So Tsush patted me on the head and talked to the staff and got some PERFECT shots:

I popped this one into Clip Studio, and rendered some lineart using LT Layer conversion:

After all, while I'll need the daytime lobby later, when Lee arrives it is after closing, so the lighting's all wrong for the scene. So it's time to reshade it by hand. There's no trick to this, you just gotta hop in and do your best.

The values are off a little here, because I keep checking while painting to see how it looks with my Sire texture on top. I love that thing. You'll all get tired of it before I do.

And that's pretty much it! If I get to finish this game, I'd like to go back in later and maybe fix up some shadows that don't make sense. XD But I got the ambience where I wanted it, which was my goal.

I did a similar paintover technique with The Case of the Serialized Killer, so that I could go for a sort of "colorized photo" look. I printed out my lines and painted over them using watercolors, and then scanned the backgrounds back into the computer:

Anyway, if anyone's looking for more step-by-steps, my patrons have gotten to read about painting backgrounds in gouache, or making visual novel sprites with watercolor.

kamitsubaki trying to frame rime as the "responsible one" is so funny to me. thats a kid playing house. she couldnt keep the others in line for one moment and ran to haru about it. ill admit shes a little above what they portray coko as but like shes kind of on par with all the others. which is to say they all collectively have one responsibility brain cell and pass it back & forth

#i dont actually see rime as a kid. to be clear. since im aware of the reading comprehension on this site i feel the need to say that #like ill wait to see what they have in store in ensemble but how theyre showing her in the 4koma is like.#she's responsible but only when she feels like it. which. mood. but to go out and call her the responsible one is funny to me #i also have no idea whats going on in the other game. i started it but after i realized it was multiplayer only after the tutorial #i never logged in again. im like. vaguely aware they introduced the isotopes to it but i have absolutely no clue the context #i just know theyre white & gold color scheme. which does look really cool admittedly #which is to say maybe im missing out on key rime details & am completely unaware of it #im not sure how much i care considering my own personal image of the isotopes is not 1:1 with the official sources anyway #as is the way with vocal synths. theyre kinda whatever u want them to be by design.#haru & sekai are the more responsible ones to me. but also thats just me & im aware of this.#also im not saying this to put her down. im rime defender number 3 after like rim herself & like one other person #i just think rimes too full of whimsy to be the responsible one #theyre free to prove me wrong tho i would like to see it

Just wanted to make a quick tut of how i do simple gold shading (u can skip a step or two too, this is just what my max steps are). Alternatively, you can replace the grey bounce light in step 3 with whatever colour is around the gold itself. I never use it as max opacity for the grey btw!

If you take anything away from this, the final step could be cool to use, I dunno LMAO

Listen I love the self-inserts whose idea of makeup is putting on a swipe of chapstick and maybe some mascara, but mc and Quinn were both forged in the dark crucible of mid 2010s makeup trends. Those bitches can wing their eyeliner with the best of them. Quinn has a dusty, forgotten drawer of eyeshadow palettes that are all full of the same warm neutrals. MC has a crusty, dry as hell liquid lipstick kicking around in her tote bag. Quinn’s at least into skincare now - and now I’m imagining her and Edge sitting around with face masks on lol - but MC absolutely goes to bed with a full face of makeup after a night out and wakes up with a false lash stuck to her forehead.
