Sebastian Aho gave a lengthy interview for a Finnish golf site on September to promote his and other Oulu based players’ (Pekka Rinne, Jussi Jokinen, Markus Nutivaara, Joonas Donskoi - the last one absent because he was spending his off-season in America) charity event.
I had no idea I was so deprived of Aho content that I just spent - ? how long? 30 minutes? an hour? - (rough) translating probably the longest golf story I have ever read.
If I suffered through this without getting bored out of my skull, so will you.

“I spend my mornings practically training hockey so it’s in the afternoon when I have time for hobbies: tennis and golf are my favorites. It’s unusual for me to be able to spend time in Oulu in September. The weather has been favorable for golf and courses are in good condition.”
It isn’t hard to get Sebastian to talk about his hobby with flowing enthusiasm. He has played the game for five seasons now. His handicap is impressive for someone with such short and irregular playing history: 6.5.
“I’m a total left-hander, like I am in all ball games. It didn’t even cross my mind to try to play golf from the right side,”
“I haven’t had any lessons, friends have shown me some basics. Sami Vatanen had a lot of really interesting and helpful ideas and tips about swings and short game during one round that we played. I learned a lot from that session.”
“I play from 2 to 4 times a week here in Oulu, sometimes when I have the chance multiple days in a row. Tennis is my other main hobby.”
Sepe tells he watches golf videos on YouTube to learn more.
“I’m interested in improving my game and getting better results. I haven’t had a hole-in-one yet. I play so irregularly that my game still varies a lot. I’m okay at driving in my opinion.”
As a hockey player Sebastian is a team player who fills his defensive duties as well as the offensive game. Golf is different.
“I go for the king shot and I do it too often from really difficult spots, trying to be the hero of my own game.”
“Putting is where I’m the most inconsistent. Sometimes I hit a flow where nothing can go amiss, the next day nothing I do makes sense and nothing sinks in.”
What does Sebastian enjoy the most in golf?
“Success motivates and carries me forward. Golf challenges the player with each hit. And of course a round of golf gives you other little pleasures, the beauty of nature around you, a nice atmosphere with the group of playing buddies.”
When asked about his best game of experience in golf, Sebastian gives an answer that ties the game to a broader context.
“We were on the training camp with the team, preparing for the playoffs. We trained every day, there was little to no other activity or contacts with people outside the team because of the covid-19, but in the evening we had a chance to go and play golf, almost the whole team came along.”
“The golf course gave us a chance to get into a positive, recharging headspace. You could let loose, hang your brain in the corner, forget about the outside world. The regular playing improved my game a level up.
Golf gave the kind of activity in our days that we needed. That was a nice golf memory.”
