While we’re on the subject of names, is there an explanation for how traditional nicknames came about that are seemingly unrelated to, or have little in common with, the original name?
ie- John/Jack, Richard/Dick, Henry/Harry/Hank, Charles/Chuck, Margaret/Peggy/Daisy, Sarah/Sally, Mary/Molly, Anne/Nan, etc
I am actually over a week into researching a huge follow-up post (probably more than one if I’m being honest) about the history of nickname usage, so I will be going into this in much, much more detail at a hopefully not-so-later date - if I have not lost my mind. (Two days ago I spent three hours chasing down a source lead that turned out to be a typographical error from 1727 that was then quoted in source after source for the next 150 years.)
As a preview though, here’s some info about the names you mentioned:
The origins of a good portion of common English nicknames come down to the simple fact that people really, really like rhyming things. Will 🠞Bill, Rob🠞Bob, Rick🠞Dick, Meg🠞Peg.
It may seem like a weird reason, but how many of you have known an Anna/Hannah-Banana? I exclusively refer to my Mom’s cat as Toes even though her name is Moe (Moesie-Toesies 🠞 Toesies 🠞 Toes).
Jack likely evolved from the use of the Middle English diminutive suffix “-chen” - pronounced (and often spelled) “-kyn” or “kin”. The use of -chen as a diminutive suffix still endures in modern German - as in “liebchen” = sweetheart (lieb “love” + -chen).
John (Jan) 🠞 Jankin 🠞 Jackin 🠞 Jack.
Hank was also originally a nickname for John from the same source. I and J were not distinct letters in English until the 17th Century. “Iankin” would have been nearly indistinguishable in pronunciation from “Hankin” due to H-dropping. It’s believed to have switched over to being a nickname for Henry in early Colonial America due to the English being exposed to the Dutch nickname for Henrik - “Henk”.
Harry is thought to be a remnant of how Henry was pronounced up until the early modern era. The name was introduced to England during the Norman conquest as the French Henri (On-REE). The already muted nasal n was dropped in the English pronunciation. With a lack of standardized spelling, the two names were used interchangeably in records throughout the middle ages. So all the early English King Henrys would have written their name Henry and pronounced it Harry.
Sally and Molly likely developed simply because little kids can’t say R’s or L’s. Mary 🠞 Mawy 🠞 Molly. Sary 🠞 Sawy 🠞 Sally.
Daisy became a nickname for Margaret because in French garden daisies are called marguerites.
Nan for Anne is an example of a very cool linguistic process called rebracketing, where two words that are often said/written together transfer letters/morphemes over time. The English use of “an” instead of “a” before words beginning with vowels is a common cause of rebracketing. For example: the Middle English “an eute” became “a newt”, and “a napron” became “an apron”. In the case of nicknames the use of the archaic possessive “mine” is often the culprit. “Mine Anne” over time became “My Nan” as “mine” fell out of use. Ned and Nell have the same origin.
Oddly enough the word “nickname” is itself a result of rebracketing, from the Middle English “an eke (meaning additional) name”.
I realized earlier this week that my cat (Toe’s sister) also has a rebracketing nickname. Her name is Mina, but I call her Nom Nom - formed by me being very annoying and saying her name a bunch of time in a row - miNAMiNAMiNAM.
Chuck is a very modern (20th century) nickname which I’ll have to get back to you on as I started my research in the 16th century and am only up to the 1810s so far lol.

Greetings in the matchless Name of our Lord Jesus Christ.
Topic: The First Martyr, Stephen: A Study of Martyrdom.
Rhema Word: John 11:25-26 (NKJV) “Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in Me, though he may die, he shall live. And whoever lives and believes in Me shall never die. Do you believe this?”
Let’s pray. Our Gracious Loving Father, thank you for giving us an opportunity to meditate Your Word today along with your children who have been called to live a holy life Father. I commit everyone who are all meditating this message into your mighty hand Father. Bless them and give them the oneness of Spirit and make their heart as a good land to receive each and every Word which is living and active Lord. Thank You Holy Spirit for helping us to understand the in-depth treasure of Your Word and helping us to live a life as per Your Word Lord. We give all the Glory and Honour to You only Father. We pray in the mighty Name of Your beloved Son Jesus Christ. Amen.
In the beginning of Acts chapter 6 we see Stephen was one of those leaders chosen to help with the issue related to the care of widows. After Stephen is chosen to help make sure that the widows are cared for, Scripture says of him: ”And Stephen, full of grace and power, was performing great wonders and signs among the people. (Acts 6:8 NASB)”
Stephen was a layman, an extraordinary layman, a great servant of God. His name means a “crown”. The following are the facts about Stephen – the First Martyr:
He was full of Holy Spirit (Acts 6:3,5,10).
He was full of grace (Acts 6:8).
He was full of power (Acts 6:8).
He was full of wisdom (Acts 6:3, 10).
He was a man of great reputation or testimony (Acts 6:3).
He was of great works (Acts 6:8).
He was man of great defender of faith (Acts 6:10).
He was the first deacon of the church (Acts 6:5).
He was the first martyr of the church (Acts 7:59-60; 22:20).
Let us try to understand this vivid study of martyrdom, a study that should encourage believers to stand fast in persecution, no matter the cost, with the help of Holy Spirit, today:
1] The cause of martyrdom: Reaction against God (Acts 7:54)
2] The Lord’s provision (Acts 7:55-56)
3] The insanity of murdering the believer (Acts 7:57-58)
4] The believer’s supreme confidence (Acts 7:59)
5] The believer’s forgiving spirit (Acts 7:60)
6] The believer’s peaceful departure (Acts 7:60)
1] The cause of martyrdom: Reaction against God (Acts 7:54):
The Bible says in Acts 7:54 ”When they heard these things they were cut to the heart, and they gnashed at him with their teeth.”
There is the cause of martyrdom – reaction against God. Remember, Stephen was on trial for his life. He had been called upon to defend himself (Acts 7:1). But instead of actually defending himself, Stephen had preached about the tragic failure of the people to follow and obey God.
(a) Yes, he had shown how God called and founded the nation of Israel to seek and inhabit the “promised land”.
(b) Yes, he had shown Israel had rejected God’s call and the hope of the promised land, rejected it time and again all through their history.
(c ) Yes, he had shown how God delivered the nation time and again, trying to stir within the people an obedience to Him.
(d) Yes, he had made eight severe charges against the nation including the murder of the righteous One, God’s very own Son:
Charge 01: The people of Israel did not worship God, but worshipped false gods (Acts 7:42).
Charge 02: The people of Israel did not carry the tabernacle of God, but of false gods (Acts 7:43).
Charge 03: The people of Israel were inexcusable. Why? Because, they were greatly blessed. (Acts 7:44-47).
Charge 04: The people of Israel did not understand the temple – God is not limited to only one particular place. (Acts 7:48-50).
Charge 05: The people of the present generation of Israel were resisting the Holy Spirit. (Acts 7:51).
Charge 06: The people of Israel persecuted all the prophets – the very servants who predicted the coming of the Righteous One (the Messiah) (Acts 7:52).
Charge 07: The people of the present generation of Israel fulfilled the prophecies. Yes, they betrayed and murdered the Righteous One, God’s very own Son (Acts 7:52).
Charge 08: The people of the present generation of Israel have not kept the law (Acts 7:53).
Stephen’s message had been effective and convicting. It had done its job. Both the leaders and the people were convicted. The response was up to them. Conviction can go either way. It can either cause a person to turn to God, confessing his sin, or cause a person to react against God. Here, the Bible says in Acts 7:54 ”When they heard these things they were cut to the heart, and they gnashed at him with their teeth.”
Yes, the people were in a rage, filled with anger and malice, ready to do violence, ready to unleash the fury of their emotions. When the human heart rebels against God, it becomes disturbed and tormented. Rebellion against God causes the human heart to be (i) uncertain & insecure, (ii) disturbed & troubled, (iii) indignant & reactionary, (iv) passive & inactive, (v) withdrawn & lonely and (vi) purposeless & meaningless.
Here, just see the faithfulness of Stephen in bearing witness to the truth. His purpose was not to escape condemnation, not at any price. He, of course, was not wishing to die. But he was not willing to deny the truth in order to live. His desire was to proclaim the truth, hoping the leaders and people of his beloved nation would heed the call of God and be saved. What a dynamic challenge for bearing testimony in difficult situations!
That is why Peter and John said in Acts 4:19-20 “ But Peter and John answered and said to them, “Whether it is right in the sight of God to listen to you more than to God, you judge. For we cannot but speak the things which we have seen and heard.”
Remember, what Paul said in 2 Timothy 1:7-8 “ For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind. Therefore, do not be ashamed of the testimony of our Lord, nor of me His prisoner, but share with me in the sufferings for the gospel according to the power of God.”
Peter also says in 1 Peter 3:15 “But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts, and always be ready to give a defence to everyone who asks you a reason for the hope that is in you, with meekness and fear.”
2] The Lord’s provision (Acts 7:55-56):
The Bible says in Acts 7:55-56 “ But he, being full of the Holy Spirit, gazed into heaven and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing at the right hand of God, and said, “Look! I see the heavens opened and the Son of Man standing at the right hand of God!”
God is always present when one of His children is facing a crisis, especially martyrdom. But note this: the person must be a true child of God, faithful and obedient to the Lord of glory. Stephen was so faithful and obedient to the Lord. He was doing exactly what Jesus had said to do, bearing testimony to the world. Therefore, Stephen had the promise of the Lord, ”And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age” (Matthew 28:20) Yes, Jesus was there with Stephen, there in the most wonderful way. Note the marvellous provision of God to those who face martyrdom.
i) God filled Stephen with the Holy Spirit. Stephen was a man who was always filled with the Spirit (Acts 5:3,5), but the idea here would be a very special infilling of the Holy Spirit. He received a very special presence and manifestation of the Holy Spirit: a special consciousness; an awareness; a sense surrounding, engulfing, and embracing him; a presence carrying him through the great trial. He also received a very special power and grace to bear and go through whatever lay ahead.
ii) God gave Stephen a vision into heaven; enabling him to see into the other world, the spiritual world, or spiritual dimension of being. (a) Stephen saw the glory of God. He saw God in the brilliant light of His person, full of splendour and radiance. (b) Stephen saw Jesus standing at the right hand of God. Jesus is usually said to be sitting at the right hand of God, symbolizing His authority as man’s Lord and Intercessor (Matthew 26:64; Mark 16:19; Luke 20:42-43; Ephesians 1:20; Hebrews 10:12-13). But here He is seen standing. This symbolizes His overlooking the scene. His care for His dear follower and the joyful reception of His faithful servant.
Here we need to understand this: Imagine the glorious sight! There will be no difference between the vision of Stephen and the actual experience of God’s glory for any believer. We shall all behold every sight in Stephen’s vision and much more. Yes, in a moment’s time, in the twinkling of an eye, the genuine believer will pass from this life into the next world immediately, never tasting or experiencing death.
That is what Jesus said in John 5:24 “Most assuredly, I say to you, he who hears My word and believes in Him who sent Me has everlasting life, and shall not come into judgment, but has passed from death into life.” He further said John 8:51 “Most assuredly, I say to you, if anyone keeps My word he shall never see death.”
Jesus said in John 11:26 “And whoever lives and believes in Me shall never die. Do you believe this?”
Apostle Paul while writing to Timothy says in 2 Timothy 4:18 “And the Lord will deliver me from every evil work and preserve me for His heavenly kingdom. To Him be glory forever and ever. Amen!” He also said while writing to Corinthians in 2 Corinthians 5:8 “We are confident, yes, well pleased rather to be absent from the body and to be present with the Lord.”
The author of Hebrews says in Hebrews 2:9-10 “But we see Jesus, who was made a little lower than the angels, for the suffering of death crowned with glory and honour, that He, by the grace of God, might taste death for everyone. For it was fitting for Him, for whom are all things and by whom are all things, in bringing many sons to glory, to make the captain of their salvation perfect through sufferings.”
iii) God gave Stephen a glorious testimony. Seeing such a scene, Stephen just burst forth proclaiming the glorious vision he was experiencing. It was most likely a natural outburst of joy and ecstasy, a testimony of the truth of the other world to those standing around. Note this part of the truth: the Son of Man, Jesus, is there. He is at the right hand of God.
Stephen was proclaiming that Jesus is the Son of God. Yes, he was proclaiming that our faith in Jesus is not in vain. Yes, he was proclaiming that Jesus is exactly whom He claimed to be.
The Bible says in Mark 16:19 “After the Lord had spoken to them, He was received up into heaven, and sat down at the right hand of God.”
Apostle Paul while writing to Ephesians says in Ephesians 1:20-21 “Which He worked in Christ when He raised Him from the dead and seated Him at His right hand in the heavenly places, far above all principality and power and might and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this age but also in that which is to come.”
Paul further said while writing to Philippians in Philippians 2:9-11 “Therefore God also has highly exalted Him (Jesus) and given Him the name which is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those in heaven, and of those on earth, and of those under the earth, and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.”
That is what Apostle John says in his vision in Revelation 5:11-12 “Then I looked, and I heard the voice of many angels around the throne, the living creatures, and the elders; and the number of them was ten thousand times ten thousand, and thousands of thousands, saying with a loud voice: “Worthy is the Lamb who was slain to receive power and riches and wisdom, and strength and honour and glory and blessing!” Hallelujah!!
3] The insanity of murdering the believer (Acts 7:57-58):
The Bible says in Acts 7:57-58 “ Then they cried out with a loud voice, stopped their ears, and ran at him with one accord; and they cast him out of the city and stoned him. And the witnesses laid down their clothes at the feet of a young man named Saul.”
There was the insanity of murdering the believer. This is seen in two things:
(i) The insane rejection:
The persecutors were actually opposing a person who only wanted to help and minister to people and to offer the hope of living forever. The sole purpose of the believer is to minister to and meet the desperate conditions of man who is being lost, in hunger, suffering from disease, depression, loneliness, lifelessness, etc.
Whatever the predicament, the believer is called to minister. He is not out to destroy, but to build. It is utter insanity to oppose and kill such a person. For men to oppose a genuine believer, their behaviour has to reach a peak of insanity. Note what is involved here: ”yelling at the top of their voices” so as o drown out the truth, ”covering their ears” so as to keep from hearing the truth, ”rushing to him” so as to attack and take vengeance, ”dragging and stoning him” so as to get rid of the convicting message, allowing them to live as they desire instead of living for God.
(ii) The insane leadership:
A person who takes the lead in persecution is in rebellion against God. Those who follow such a leader are following a person who is actually reacting against the Lord, not against a believer. The man who took the lead in Stephen’s murder was Saul of Tarsus. He was kicking against the pricks, the conviction of conscience.
It is dangerous to follow man in rebellion against God. The path of rebellion leads to destruction. The man in rebellion shall perish. There is no exception.
That is why Jesus said in Matthew 23:33 “Serpents, brood of vipers! How can you escape the condemnation of hell?”
Apostle Paul while writing to Romans said in Romans 1:28-32 “And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a debased mind, to do those things which are not fitting; being filled with all unrighteousness, sexual immorality, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, evil-mindedness; they are whisperers, backbiters, haters of God, violent, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents, undiscerning, untrustworthy, unloving, unforgiving, unmerciful; who, knowing the righteous judgment of God, that those who practice such things are deserving of death, not only do the same but also approve of those who practice them.”
Paul further said in Romans 2:5 “But in accordance with your hardness and your impenitent heart you are treasuring up for yourself wrath in the day of wrath and revelation of the righteous judgment of God.”
While writing to Galatians, Paul said in Galatians 5:19-21 “Now the works of the flesh are evident, which are: adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lewdness, idolatry, sorcery, hatred, contentions, jealousies, outbursts of wrath, selfish ambitions, dissensions, heresies, envy, murders, drunkenness, revelries, and the like; of which I tell you beforehand, just as I also told you in time past, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.”
Apostle John while seeing the vision revealed in Revelation 21:8 “But the cowardly, unbelieving, abominable, murderers, sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars shall have their part in the lake which burns with fire and brimstone, which is the second death.”
The Bible cautions about the fate of a stiff-necked person in Proverbs 29:1 “He who is often rebuked, and hardens his neck, will suddenly be destroyed, and that without remedy.”
4] The believer’s supreme confidence (Acts 7:59):
The Bible says in Acts 7:59 “And they stoned Stephen as he was calling on God and saying, “Lord Jesus, receive my spirit.”
The believer’s supreme confidence and hope is assurance of heaven. Here note four points:
(i) Stephen experienced the pain and suffering of the trial. This is seen in that he called for the Lord’s help. Believers are not removed or relieved from the sufferings of trials, but they are given the grace and strength to endure the trials, even martyrdom.
(ii) Stephen called upon the Lord Himself. It was the Lord Jesus who was standing, ready to receive him. Jesus wishes all believers to be with Him where He is (John 14:2-3; John 17:24). This is the very reason for which Jesus humiliated Himself in coming to earth, sacrificed His life in death and prays and longs for believers to join Him in heaven.
(iii) Stephen called for Jesus to receive his spirit. Stephen was still trusting the grace of God, the righteousness of Jesus, for his salvation. He was not trusting his own works and goodness. He was still depending upon Jesus and the wonderful love of God. Yes, Stephen had trusted and lived for Christ during life so he could expect to trust and live for Christ in eternity as well.
(iv) Stephen was going to be where Jesus was. He called for Jesus to receive his spirit, to accept him where He was. Remember, where Jesus is – Jesus is in heaven and He is at the right hand of God (verse 55). Yes, Stephen and all other believers are to be with Jesus right where He is, in heaven itself.
Jesus said in John 14:2-3 “ My Father’s house has many rooms; if that were not so, would I have told you that I am going there to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am.”
Jesus while praying for His disciples prays in John 17:24 “Father, I desire that they also whom You gave Me may be with Me where I am, that they may behold My glory which You have given Me; for You loved Me before the foundation of the world.”
Apostle Paul says in 1 Thessalonians 4:17 “ Then we who are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And thus we shall always be with the Lord.”
5] The believer’s forgiving spirit (Acts 7:60)
There was the believer’s loving and forgiving spirit. Yes, Stephen’s last act was to kneel in prayer and to plead for his persecutors and murderers as recorded in Acts 7:60 “Then he knelt down and cried out with a loud voice, “Lord, do not charge them with this sin.” And when he had said this, he fell asleep.” Yes, he possessed the very sprit of Christ Himself, who had prayed the same prayer in Luke 23:34 “Then Jesus said, “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they do.”
Here, the words “do not charge them with this sin” means three things:
(i) Stephen was filled with compassion for his persecutors. He warmed them to be saved.
(ii) Men will be charged with sin.
(iii) Men must have the charge of sin removed from them to be acceptable before God.
6] The believer’s peaceful departure (Acts 7:60):
There was the believer’s peaceful departure. Scripture simply says, ”He fell asleep”. Yes, there is no death for the believer. Yes, Stephen simply passed from this life into the next world, an experience that amounts to nothing more than falling asleep. Sleep is often used to describe the “death” for the believer. Jesus said in John 11:12-13 “Then His disciples said, “Lord, if he sleeps he will get well.” However, Jesus spoke of his death, but they thought that He was speaking about taking rest in sleep.”
That is what Jesus said in John 5:24 “Most assuredly, I say to you, he who hears My word and believes in Him who sent Me has everlasting life, and shall not come into judgment, but has passed from death into life.”
Jesus said to Martha in John 11:25-26 “I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in Me, though he may die, he shall live. And whoever lives and believes in Me shall never die. Do you believe this?”
Apostle Paul says in Philippians 1:21 “For to me, to live is Christ, and to die is gain.”
While writing to Corinthians Paul says in 1 Corinthians 15:53-56 “For this corruptible must put on incorruptible, and this mortal must put on immortality. So, when this corruptible has put on incorruptible, and this mortal has put on immortality, then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written: “Death is swallowed up in victory.” “O Death, where is your sting? O Hades, where is your victory?” The sting of death is sin, and the strength of sin is the law.”
Paul further said in 2 Corinthians 5:1 “For we know that if our earthly house, this tent, is destroyed, we have a building from God, a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens.”
Here the lesson for us is: believers are to forgive men no matter what the offense may be.
Jesus said in Matthew 5:7,44 “Blessed are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy.”.. “But I say to you, love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who spitefully use you and persecute you”.
Apostle Peter says in 1 Peter 3:9 “Don’t repay evil for evil. Don’t retaliate with insults when people insult you. Instead, pay them back with a blessing. That is what God has called you to do, and He will grant you His blessing.”
Prophet Micah says in Micah 6:7-8 “Should we offer Him thousands of rams and ten thousand rivers of olive oil? Should we sacrifice our firstborn children to pay for our sins? No, O people, the Lord has told you what is good, and this is what he requires of you: to do what is right, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God.”
Yes, let us be ready and stand fast in persecution, no matter the cost, like Stephen.
Let us introspect ourselves.
Shall we preach the Word of God effectively so as to convict the congregation?
Whether our hearts still rebel against God?
Shall we remove our rebellion nature completely so as to allow God’s will is being manifested in our lives?
Shall we stand for the truth in order to live till the end like Stephen?
Shall we have the confidence and belief that our Lord Jesus Christ is always with us when we are facing crisis, especially martyrdom?
Shall we have the confidence and belief that in a moment’s time, we will pass from this life into the next world immediately, never tasting or experiencing death?
Shall we remove our stubbornness and unrepentant hearts today so as to pre-empt storing up wrath for the judgement day?
Shall we have the forgiving hearts to plead for persecutors and murderers as well like Stephen and our Lord Jesus Christ?
Let us Pray: Our Heavenly Gracious Father, we thank you for helping us to understand about the “The First Martyr, Stephen: A Study of Martyrdom” and introspecting ourselves today Father. Father, please help us to preach the Word of God effectively so as to convict the congregation, to remove our rebellion nature completely so as to allow God’s will is being manifested in our lives, please help us to stand for the truth in order to live till the end like Stephen, help us to have the confidence and belief that our Lord Jesus Christ is always with us when we are facing crisis, especially martyrdom, Father. Please help us to have the confidence and belief that in a moment’s time, we will pass from this life into the next world immediately, never tasting or experiencing death Father. Father, please remove our stubbornness and unrepentant hearts so as to pre-empt storing up wrath for the judgement day besides having the forgiving hearts to plead even for persecutors and murderers like Stephen and Your beloved Son Jesus Christ, Father. We give all praise, glory and honour to Your Holy Name. In Jesus name we pray. Amen.
God bless you all.

On January 8th 1697 Thomas Aikenhead was executed in Edinburgh.
So who was oor Thomas, a villain?, a murderer?, a smuggler?, or some enemy of the state? No Thomas’s crime was blasphemy who took the lord’s name in vain…….this would be comic if it wasn’t for the tragic fact that he was executed, unlike the man in Life of Brian, who uttered the words Jehova, Thomas complained that he wished he was warming himself in hell rather than that chilly night walking past the recently built Tron Kirk on Edinburgh’s Royal Mile. Well that’s the simple story that the tour guides that take you round the Old Town will tell you, there is a bit more to it so I will bore you with a bit more of the detail.
Thomas Aikenhead came from a well-to-do family in Edinburgh, his father being listed as a surgeon but more probably an apothecary, a dispenser of herbs and potions. Both his parents were dead by the time he became a student at Edinburgh University at the age of 16 or 17.
His mother had been a daughter of the manse, and you would think that would have made Aikenhead wary of challenging the established religion of the time, namely the all-powerful Church of Scotland, especially while still a student and under the constant gaze of professors, lecturers and, as it turned out, his fellow students.
These were the dying days of a curious period in Scottish history. Aikenhead would have been four when the ‘Wizard of the West Bow’ Major Thomas Weir was executed in 1670. Weir was by day an extreme Calvinist but by night an incestuous Satanist and it takes no great leap of reason to see that an impressionable young boy might well have been affected by the trial and execution of a local celebrity that lived not far from him.
Thomas was a keen student and an avid reader, he may or may not have known and Edinburgh bookseller, John Frazer, who had been prosecuted after admitting either reading, or being in possession of Charles Blount’s Oracles of Reason a book I know nothing about but gather it relates to Deism, which questioned the existence or more importantly, non-existence of God or Satan, Frazer had repented ad as it was a first offence was sack clothed and jailed in the old Tolbooth for a number of months.
Anyway, Thomas had a friend, well he thought he had a friend, Murdo Craig, but Murdo, on the sly had been keeping notes on Aitkenhead, and his dalliances with blasphemous ideals, we know that because they formed a large part of the indictment against Aikenhead.  Craig ‘s testimony read:
“Nevertheless it is of verity, that you Thomas Aikenhead, shakeing off all fear of God and regaird to his majesties lawes, have now for more than a twelvemoneth by past, and upon severall of the dayes within the said space, and ane or other of the same, made it as it were your endeavour and work in severall compainies to vent your wicked blasphemies against God and our Saviour Jesus Christ, and against the holy Scriptures, and all revealled religione, in soe far as upon ane or other of the dayes forsaid, you said and affirmed, that divinity or the doctrine of theologie was a rapsidie of faigned and ill-invented nonsense, patched up partly of the morall doctrine of philosophers, and pairtly of poeticall fictions and extravagant chimeras, or words to this effect or purpose, with severall other such reproachfull expressions.”
That was just for starters. Sir James Stewart of Goodtrees, the Lord Advocate of the day, had taken a personal interest in the case and he decided to throw the whole lot of Craig’s testimony at Aikenhead who was arrested in November, 1696, and charged under the Blasphemy Act of 1661 which carried the death penalty. He also charged Aikenhead under a more recent act, which made it a criminal offence to ‘deny, impugn or quarrel’ about the existence of God.
The prosecution papers go on to record “You have lykwayes in discourse preferred Mahomet to the blessed Jesus, and you have said that you hoped to see Christianity greatly weakened, and that you are confident that in a short tyme it will be utterly extirpate.”  For Mahomet, read Muhammad, could young Thomas be an Islam convert in 17th century Edinburgh, I very much doubt it, they just needed to make an example of the young student, and he knew by now that he was in very great trouble and protested in effect that he was guilty only of the sin of being youthful and had been led astray by the books he had read. He claimed to have repented of his anti-Christian beliefs and was once again a good Presbyterian.
In this way he seems to have thrown himself upon the mercy of the court. There was none. On Christmas Eve, 1696, a jury found him guilty. Sir James Stewart asked for the death penalty and it was granted and “pronounced for doom,” as Scottish judges were still saying well into the 20th century in capital punishment cases.
Aikenhead pleaded for his life to the Privy Council emphasising his youth, his dire circumstances, and the fact that he was reconciled to the Protestant religion. There was some support for the death sentence to be commuted from at least two councillors and two Church of Scotland ministers, but the General Assembly of the Kirk intervened, demanding that Aikenhead suffer “vigorous execution to curb the abounding of impiety and profanity in this land”. These were the same type of zealots that closed down Allan Ramsay’s theatre less than 40 years later.
Back to yer man, Thomas, in  his last letter to friends, written in the Tolbooth prison in Edinburgh as he awaited execution, Aikenhead at last gave a plausible explanation for his conduct – that he had been a disappointed seeker after truth.
He wrote: “It is a principle innate and co-natural to every man to have an insatiable inclination to the truth and to seek for it as for hid treasure. So I proceeded until the more I thought thereon, the further I was from finding the verity I desired.”
In truth, in a repressed society the student had just gone too far in rejecting the doctrines of Christianity calling it “feigned and ill-invented nonsense”
Aikenhead went to his death on this day, 1697, hanged on the scaffold at Shrubhill between Edinburgh and Leith. It is said that before he died he proclaimed that moral laws were the work of governments and men, ain't that the truth!
In his hand as the noose was placed around his neck was the Holy Bible.
The execution angered many people for many years afterwards. The great English historian Thomas Babington Macaulay wrote an account of the hanging and called the execution “a crime such has never since polluted the island.”
He continued: “The preachers who were the boy’s murderers crowded round him at the gallows, and, while he was struggling in the last agony, insulted Heaven with prayers more blasphemous than any thing that he had ever uttered.”
There was other evidence of church authorities being present as Aikenhead died. He was the last man in Britain to be hanged for blasphemy.
According to Arthur Herman in his book How the Scots Invented the Modern World: The True Story of How Western Europe’s Poorest Nation Created Our World and Everything in It the execution of Aikenhead was “the last hurrah of Scotland’s Calvinist ayatollahs” before the dawning of the age of reason in the Enlightenment.
Now we can all rejoice in The Enlightenment but a full 30 years later in the small town of Dornoch in Sutherland, Janet Horne was put on trial for the “crime” of having a daughter whose feet and hands were misshapen and who had herself given birth to a son with disabilities. She was the last woman in Britain to be burned at the stake for being a witch, her death bringing to an end the “burning time” when perhaps 4000 Scottish women were executed for the crime of witchcraft.
As with all good stories there has been a drama set to the events,  I Am Thomas: A Brutal Comedy with Songs was performed at the  Royal Lyceum Theatre in 2016, before going on a short tour, it received mixed to positive reviews from critics. The Gospel reading for this morning, the 3rd Sunday of Easter: Luke 24:13-35
“Now on that same day two of the disciples were going to a village called Emmaus, about seven miles from Jerusalem, and talking with each other about all these things that had happened. While they were talking and discussing, Jesus himself came near and went with them, but their eyes were kept from recognizing him. And he said to them, “What are you discussing with each other while you walk along?” They stood still, looking sad. Then one of them, whose name was Cleopas, answered him, “Are you the only stranger in Jerusalem who does not know the things that have taken place there in these days?” He asked them, “What things?” They replied, “The things about Jesus of Nazareth, who was a prophet mighty in deed and word before God and all the people, and how our chief priests and leaders handed him over to be condemned to death and crucified him. But we had hoped that he was the one to redeem Israel. Yes, and besides all this, it is now the third day since these things took place. Moreover, some women of our group astounded us. They were at the tomb early this morning, and when they did not find his body there, they came back and told us that they had indeed seen a vision of angels who said that he was alive. Some of those who were with us went to the tomb and found it just as the women had said; but they did not see him.” Then he said to them, “Oh, how foolish you are, and how slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have declared! Was it not necessary that the Messiah should suffer these things and then enter into his glory?” Then beginning with Moses and all the prophets, he interpreted to them the things about himself in all the scriptures. As they came near the village to which they were going, he walked ahead as if he were going on. But they urged him strongly, saying, “Stay with us, because it is almost evening and the day is now nearly over.” So he went in to stay with them. When he was at the table with them, he took bread, blessed and broke it, and gave it to them. Then their eyes were opened, and they recognized him; and he vanished from their sight. They said to each other, “Were not our hearts burning within us while he was talking to us on the road, while he was opening the scriptures to us?” That same hour they got up and returned to Jerusalem; and they found the eleven and their companions gathered together. They were saying, “The Lord has risen indeed, and he has appeared to Simon!” Then they told what had happened on the road, and how he had been made known to them in the breaking of the bread.”
Reflections on the Gospel:
This account tells us the story of two disciples of Jesus who have left Jerusalem on the same day of the Resurrection of Jesus. Early that morning, some of the women disciples had gone to anoint the body of Jesus, but find him not only alive but transformed and transfigured, having conquered death, hell, and the grave. The women run to tell the disciples that Jesus has been raised from the dead. There seems to be general agreement amongst the men that they are wrong, that the body has been taken...anything other than believing the testimony of the women who had seen the living Lord. Even after seeing Jesus raise the dead on multiple occasions, including Lazarus only a few days ago, they are unable to believe. Many of the disciples had quickly departed for home after the crucifixion, some to Galilee and others to their own villages scattered throughout Israel. To those still abiding in Jerusalem, Jesus appears to them, eats with them, tells them to touch him and see his wounds. Many of the community of the disciples believe after Jesus appears to them there in Jerusalem, but many had already fled in fear of their own lives, or in utter desolation that the one whom they thought was the Messiah was not in fact the One.
These two in this Gospel reading are among the incredulous and dejected, and so have left the company of the disciples before Jesus appears to those still waiting in Jerusalem. They had heard the testimony of the women, but that was not enough for them, and so they are heading home to Emmaus, a village about 7 miles west of Jerusalem.
Now Emmaus is a town of special importance in the history of the people of Israel. Before the Romans had conquered Israel, the Greek armies of Alexander the Great, returning from their victories in Persia, had conquered the Middle East and much of North Africa. Alexander had died, and his generals carved up the empire and set themselves up as kings. Fast forward a hundred and fifty years to the 160’s BC and we find that Israel is ruled by the descendant of one of those generals, who ruled out of Syria: Antiochus IV. Under the rule of these generals and their descendants, all the conquered territories were forcefully hellenized; that is, forced to adopt the Greek language, Greek customs, and Greek religion. In some cases, such as Israel, the conquered peoples were also allowed to maintain their own religion, but only to a point. Now Antiochus had come to believe that he was, in fact, the Son of God much in the same way that the Roman emperors would do in later years. Antiochus took the title “Theos Epiphanes”, meaning “God revealed”. In his madness, he commanded that the religion of the Jews would be forbidden and an idol of himself would be erected in the Temple in Jerusalem, and sacrifices made to him. Surprisingly, after the idol was put in place, which caused riots among the people, there was at least one priest willing to offer sacrifices to the idol. This event set of what later became known as the Maccabean Revolt, lead by a priest named Mattathias Maccabee.
Mattathias was commanded to offer sacrifices to Antiochus and the Greek gods, but he refused. When Antiochus found a priest who would comply, Mattathias killed that priest and an insurrection was born. The great miracle of Hanukkah occurred during this crisis. Here’s where Emmaus comes into this great history of the Jewish people overthrowing their conquerors and restoring their independence, and return to their own a Semitic religion, language, and culture. It all stems from a singular battle.
The Battle of Emmaus took place in 166 BC between the Maccabee forces of Judea, led by Judah Maccabee, and the third expedition of the Seleucid Empire forces under Antiochus IV Epiphanes to Lysias. Against all odds, the Maccabean Revolt is successful. For over a century, the Judeans established an autonomous state, having declared the sons of Mattathias as their new kings, thus establishing the Hasmonean dynasty, which ruled until Rome conquered Israel in 37 BC.
Now back to our Gospel reading. If you will recall, only a few days before his crucifixion, less than a week before this account, Jesus had quite spectacularly cleansed the Temple of money changers in an event not unlike that of the Maccabeans. Here’s how this connects with the Maccabean cleansing of the Temple nearly two hundred years before. The role of the priests in the Temple was inherited; priests were all descendants of Aaron, the brother of Moses. And the role of High Priest was based on a rota; that is, the role of High Priest was assigned on a rotating schedule amongst all the priestly clans, and was not something that belonged to only one family. In the Maccabean restoration, the role of High Priest eventually became intimately tied with the new aristocracy (and later with the Roman occupation), and the High Priesthood became in inherited role of one family in particular, the family of Annas, whose son-in-law Caiaphas oversaw the unlawful trial of Jesus. Having become an inherited position, that clan began to amass great wealth and influence. Annas was the one who came up with the idea for setting up a money exchange in the Temple, by which his family were extorting great wealth from their own people, along with massive pens of animals for purchase for sacrifice in the Temple (previously, animals for sacrifice were obtained outside the Temple precincts). Jesus, much like the Maccabean restoration of the Temple, is incensed at the corruption of the Temple at the hands of the High Priest clan, thus calling them out as both illegitimate as a High Priests, as profiteers, using the Temple to enrich themselves, and as collaborators in collusion with the Roman occupation. Much like the Battle of Emmaus, Jesus defeated the armies of darkness, oppression, and sin on Golgotha, on the cross.
Is it any surprise that the Judean aristocracy and High Priest clan wanted Jesus dead? Is it any surprise that they were successful in murdering Jesus? Is it any surprise that they resisted anyone calling himself the Son of God, who had the authority to turn them out from their positions of power?
No wonder many of the disciples fled in fear. No wonder many of them lost their faith because Jesus had not started another Maccabean Revolt. No wonder do many of us struggle with belief and with faith, because Jesus has not yet brought about the Kingdom of God as a visible kingdom, overturning the corruption of human governments and liberating the oppressed. We, like these two disciples, still do not understand that God’s ways are not our ways, nor is God’s timetable our timetable. We reasonably desire the permanent end of oppression, corruption, and tyranny. Like these two men, we want it right now! I certainly do!
And this is why faith is a gift from God. Belief alone is insufficient because it relies on our best efforts to squeeze God into simply being the one who immediately satisfies our desires. Only faith can sustain us when our hopes are dashed, our expectations left unfulfilled, and our suffering remains real and painful day to day.
It was only after Jesus agreed to go with the men, and teaches them why he had to suffer and die, why the Resurrection was always the plan, and then celebrates what is the first Holy Eucharist after the Last Supper (in which Jesus establishes and hallows the Holy Eucharist) with them that their hearts are opened to receive the gift of faith. With their hearts and eyes opened, and their souls flooded with grace, Jesus instantly vanished and the men are compelled by joy to return to Jerusalem and tell the disciples that they have seen the Risen Lord!
In much the same way, my own journey of faith has become centered not just on correct belief but upon the objective reality that Jesus is with us in the Holy Eucharist. There are many places and ways to gather with others of shared beliefs or communal stories, where ideas can be shared, or questioned, or rejected until we find some form of agreement.
But there is only one place where Jesus promises to physically, truly, and objectively meet me to heal me, live within me, and fill me with hope, and that is in the most Blessed Sacrament of the Holy Eucharist. Like conquerors or governments throughout human history have done, from the armies of Alexander and of Rome, or the petit powers of hierarchies and class, I am being asked, no commanded to obey: to live, speak, eat, and believe in human powers, which are themselves subject to the “rulers...the authorities... the powers of this dark world and...the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms”. We all are being commanded by these powers to comply, to obey, to be afraid, to offer sacrifice and worship.
But Jesus is walking with us, and has given us the Holy Spirit as comforter, protector, and guide as we walk our own road to Emmaus, our own walk of disillusionment, despair, and confusion. He walks with us, and will come and abide with us if we ask him, and he will be with us: truly, objectively, fully; in the Blessed Sacrament. He will set us free from the fear of all earthly and spiritual powers, and empower us and free us to worship God, and him only, no matter the cost. He will fill us with himself, and his joy will become ours. We have only to ask.
So let today be the day that you ask him to come and abide in you, that you may know true freedom from the powers of this world, and be filled with his joy.
O God, whose blessed Son made himself known to his disciples in the breaking of bread: Open the eyes of our faith, that we may behold him in all his redeeming work; who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever.
Amen.

Saint of the Day – 29 April – St Peter of Verona OP (1205–1252) also known as St Peter Martyr – Dominican Priest and Friar, a celebrated Preacher, miracle-worker, Marian devotee.   He served as Inquisitor in Lombardy, was killed by an assassin and was Canonised 11 months after his death, making his the fastest Canonisation in history. Patronages – inquisitors, midwives, Castelleone di Suasa, Italy, Verona, Italy, diocese of, Guaynabo, Puerto Rico. St Peter is the the first Canonised martyr of the Dominican Order.
Tumblr media
In the English-speaking part of the world especially, all too little is known about this illustrious Friar Preacher.   Possibly this is in part due to the well-known bias in England against the old-time inquisition, which spread thence into the colonies founded by that country, for Saint Peter was closely connected with that institution.   Indeed, by not a few he is considered as a man without a heart.   Yet he was most compassionate.   His character was rounded out by an admirable strength of will and a mind so judiciously balanced that he neither shrank from duty, whatever the sacrifice, or even danger, it involved, nor allowed his heart to control his judgement.
Father Thomas Agni of Leontino, another noted Dominican, archbishop of Cosenza and later patriarch of Jerusalem, was the first to write a life of the blessed martyr.   His testimony should he all the more reliable because he lived for many years with Saint Peter of Verona, had been his superior and was an eye-witness of the principal events in his life.   The work shows no signs of undue predilection.   Agni’s original manuscript was for long years at Saint Mark’s Convent, Florence. Another, with some additions by Father Ambrose Taegio, was preserved in the Convent of Nostra Donna delle Grazie, Milan.
Peter was born in Verona, Italy in 1205, of parents who had embraced the heresy of Cartharism but he did attend a Catholic school.   He was educated at the University of Bologna and was accepted into the Dominican Order by Dominic himself.
Tumblr media
Because the Dominicans were theologically trained preachers, the popes entrusted the Inquisition to them.   In 1234, Pope Innocent IV recognised Peter’s virtues (severity of life and doctrine, talent for preaching, and zeal for the orthodox Catholic faith) and appointed him Inquisitor in Lombardy.   He spent about six months in that office and it is unclear whether he was ever involved in any trials.   His one recorded act was a declaration of clemency for those confessing heresy or sympathy to heresy.   In 1251 his jurisdiction was extended to most of northern Italy. Although he attracted huge crowds with his preaching, as an inquisitor he also made enemies.
Marvellously filled with the gifts of the Holy Spirit, he laboured continually for the propagation and defence of the true faith, being zealous for its promotion among the people.   To this end he established the Association of the Faith and the Confraternity of the Blessed Virgin Mary.   He was a fervent of promoter of community and fraternal life and served the brethren wisely as a prior.   He was also greatly solicitous for the spiritual good of the sisters, lovingly assisting them with his advice and exhortations to their spiritual benefit.
In his sermons he denounced heresy and also those Catholics who professed the Faith by words but acted contrary to it in deeds.   Crowds came to meet him and followed him, conversions were numerous, including many Cathars who returned to orthodoxy.
Because of this, a group of Milanese Cathars conspired to kill him.   They hired an assassin, one Carino of Balsamo.   Carino’s accomplice was Manfredo Clitoro of Giussano. On 6 April 1252, when Peter was returning from Como to Milan, the two assassins followed Peter to a lonely spot near Barlassina and there killed him and mortally wounded his companion, a fellow friar named Domenico.
Tumblr media
Carino struck Peter’s head with an axe and then attacked Domenico.   Peter rose to his knees and recited the first article of the Symbol of the Apostles (the Apostle’s Creed). Offering his blood as a sacrifice to God, according to legend, he dipped his fingers in it and wrote on the ground: “Credo in Deum” “I believe in God”, the first words of the Apostles’ Creed.   The blow that killed him cut off the top of his head but the testimony given at the inquest into his death confirms that he began reciting the Creed when he was attacked.   Domenico was carried to Meda, where he died five days afterwards.
Tumblr media
The murderer Carino, renounced heresy, became a Dominican co-operator brother and died with a reputation for sanctity.  He is the subject of a local cult as Blessed Carino of Balsamo.
Wherever he went, the deaf, the dumb, the blind, the lame and people sick with every kind of ailment were brought to him.   Ordinarily all were benefited by his prayers.  They praised God for the power of healing which He had given His servant.
Tumblr media
Peter of Verona and with reason, was considered a learned doctor.   Yet he ever continued to store his mind with new knowledge, whether through prayer, meditation, or reading the Sacred Writings.   The example which he set his religious brethren showed them by what means they could perfect themselves in their state of life and make themselves useful to the Church.   Never did his degree of Master in Sacred Theology cause him to neglect study.   Study never prevented him from being the first at all the regular exercises.   Well did he know how to combine the practices of the cloister with the labours of the apostolic life.
Tumblr media
In private conversation, just as in his sermons, he stimulated the faithful with his personal sentiments of love for the Blessed Virgin.   Because of his influence in their favour the Servites (they were investigated to ensure their orthodoxy) have ever regarded Peter of Verona in the light of a second founder of their order.   After his Canonisation, they placed him on the list of their holy patrons and protectors.
The Bull of Canonisation was sent at once to all bishops and ecclesiastical superiors, with an order that the feast of Peter of Verona should he celebrated every year on 29 April. This day was chosen for the celebration because that of his martyrdom, 6 April often falls in Holy Week, or within the octave of Easter.   Alexander IV and several of his successors, prescribed that the feast should he of the same obligation as that of Saint Dominic. Finally, Clement X, by a papal decree, ordered that the feast of Saint Peter Martyr should have the rank of a duplex for the whole Church.   This was in 1670 and the practice is in use today, wherever the Roman breviary is recited.
However, veneration of Peter of Verona is especially noteworthy in the Order of Friars Preacher and in that of the Servites.   It is particularly the case in Italy, the land of his birth, the field of his labours and the place of his holy death.   There many are the churches, chapels and confraternities erected in his honour.
Tumblr media
The body of the martyr is still preserved and venerated in a magnificent chapel of Saint Eustorgio, Milan.   Princes and noblemen of France, Germany, England and Italy (particularly the archbishops of Milan) imitated the king and queen of Cyprus with their rich gifts for the enshrinement of the saint’s relics.   At each time of their various translations (1253, 1340, 1651 and 1736) many miracles were wrought.   Suffice it to say that the Acta Sanctorum, in the third volume for April, where they treat of our martyr, give a long list of attested wonders worked by him.
Tumblr media
Saint Thomas of Aquinas, the Angelic Doctor, was an ardent admirer of Peter of Verona.  In 1263 he visited the martyr’s sepulchre.   While at Saint Eustorgio’s Convent, the great theologian and poet wrote the following verses in eulogy of the valiant athlete of the faith, which were afterwards engraved on a marble slab and placed near his tomb, where they may still he read:
Here silent is Christ’s Herald. Here quenched, the People’s Light. Here lies the martyred Champion Who fought Faith’s holy fight. The Voice the sheep heard gladly, The light they loved to see He fell beneath the weapons Of graceless Cathari.
The Saviour crowns His Soldier. His praise the people psalm. The Faith he kept adorns him With martyr’s fadeless palm.
His praise new marvels utter, New light he spreads abroad And now the whole wide city Knows well the path to God.

The Hardest Path (Father Brown, one-shot in English)
[Sinopse] Basically, The Owl of Minerva (S03 E15, season finale) with Sid's point of view, a bit of slashy twist, and some drama that could give a nice Mexican soap opera a run for their money. Sorry for it. :3
[Word Count] 4,444
[Disclaimer] Father Brown belongs to the family of the writer G.K. Chesterton (books and short stories, published between World War I and II), and to BBC (adaptation into the very groovy TV series, since 2013). This is just a fanwork, meant for some pleasure, enjoyment, entertainment, and maybe some tears, absolutely without any intention of financial profit whatsoever.
Cross-posted to AO3 and FFN.
 1.
- Kembleford, 731.
Wasn't it easier just to say “Hello?”
He never knew how to react to any joke, to the point of making his pranks lose any trace of fun.
He also never did anything the easiest way.
Probably had never been allowed to go through the easiest path, never had been given any opportunity to play, relax, chill out, try to live a normal life. And for some reason, as absurd as the iron-hard discipline imposed on him, he just never have spared any time to complain, or to rebel.
It was unbearable, to see that stupid act of a trial, with tons of false evidences and bought testimonies, could be taken to the last consequences. Who could see a murderer in the most upstanding man in town? How could such an  uptight, unable to turn a blind eye to some useless, silly rule, be unable to disrespect the sacred gift of life? Even more, the life of a fellow copper, an apprentice who also swore to serve and protect innocent civilians?
The house that they have temporarily given him would remain empty, until the arrival of the next Inspector.
For a few weeks, it'd be, again, an old, empty cottage. Just as dead as any of the graves in the cemetery behind the Church.
Regardless of how many people would be living there, for Sid, that house would never come back to life again.
The next time that the phone would ring, it wouldn't be that boyish voice, affecting cold and authority, that would answer the unlucky interlocutor. That lost expression, a tired attempt to keep people at arm's lenght, would never repeat the address, instead of trying to keep a normal conversation.
If Sid picked the lock, with his good old magic trick, instead of a key, like the previous resident, or any "honest person", he wouldn't have to worry about the nearly empty cupboards, always forgotten by the owner, neither about the ancient plumbing, which would never spend more than a month without breaking, and giving an unpleasant but never unexpected surprise.
He'd never see the well-known mugs stained of coffee or tea, or the plates of pancakes in the sink; and would never listen to the sound of big bands, easy listening or jazz, and never would get weirded out by the otherworldy voices of an opera, because any part of the small and smart collection of  long-plays would spin lazily in that old turntable again.
The slim and well-known figure would never come back to nap or brood in the armchair in the sitting room. There would never be another trenchcoat, wet with dew or rain, or any well-tailored suit jacket, in any dark, austere colour, hanging in the rack by the door. And the sofa would never be laden with that mess of old books full of markers and scribblings.
The next occupant of the police cottage would never have time to stop and enjoy their own home.
And Sid would never have to worry about other nightmares but his own.
Because the person for whom he used to make the nest of blankets that was not in the bed anymore would never come back home, seeking shelter for another cold and sleepless night.
 2.
When Her Ladyship answered the phone, soon after breakfast, Sid feigned the typical mischievous smile, thinking that the call had no more news than another wave in Mrs. M's, or another of Lady F's informants, eternal river of gossiping.
However, when she fell instead of sitting in the sofa, and raised those beautiful green eyes to her loyal servant, the sadness in the precious face became a telepathic message. A single mind, heavy with affliction, multiplied into two.
To the contrary of Sid's fear, the endangered person wasn't the Father, but the person involved in his new "amateur" investigation.
The man that Sid though as gone to never be seen again; condemned to death, for a crime he'd never even think to commit. A man who finally raised in riot against the useless machine that chewed him up, and spat no more than an empty shell back into the world of the living.
Fragile, subdued, dirty, covered in bruises. He was beaten, wounded and broken, physically, mentally and spiritually, in the unjust prison. Didn't look, even in the slightest, like the equivalent guarded in Sid's memory, heart and senses.
Nevertheless, the tired voice had the same timbre, and the hazel-coloured eyes, the same innocence, for which the driver would never be able to resist.
His smart eyes devoured that exhausted shadow, and focused instantly where the suit sleeves couldn't hide parts of horrible red marks in the other man's wrists.
Blood boiled in fury, destroying impulse without a certain target, the need to protect someone who ignored his own closeness to death. An infinite conflict on sentiment, silenced by the former petty criminal.
It was easy, too easy, to fake a joke with the absurd irony of the situation, and even easier to open the cuffs, in less than five seconds.
Look into the well-known eyes and see them full of pain was hard, too hard, and fight the will to soothe the wounded innocent, dress, balm and clean his wounds, almost impossible.
Like always, the black-haired young man ignored his needs, and went on with his story. After biting back a tired sigh, he exposed the free-masons' conspiration, and his own desperate masterplan to clean his name, and get his honor back.
Good God. He still thought about going back and serving the stupid machine of "justice"? With his own life, probably??
Carter felt even angrier, and questioned the prisioner's sanity even more vehemently. The fugitive broke out of jail... to refuse all other offers of help, and go back to the enemy's lair, in a few hours, to get the only and last true evidence that still remained for the case.
A clue that costed two lifes, and his could perfectly be the third.
"Have you forgotten which one of us is the police officer?"
Why did he come and ask for help and shelter, to the found family he despised, for all the time he lived in the town, if he was planning to go alone, in a damn suicide mission, first thing in the morning?
The Father offered a conciliatory answer, soon ignored by the kamikaze; a blanket and the presbytery's sofa, and a break for sleep, and plan a more appropriate counter-attack in the morning.
Sid could see Sullivan, though the shadows in the curtains; his vague outline, curled up in a tight ball of tense muscles, painful bruises and restless nerves. Could feel him struggling in insomniac silence. Both man had been unable to sleep that night.
Sidney was already used to see the stubborn officer working until falling to exhaustion, every time an enquire proved to be more complex than usual. It was obvious that he haven't had even a nap in the previous few days, and that his conscience hasn't gotten off for even a moment of rest, since the start of that perverse circus act.
During the brief, but lovely time they spent nearly living together - in clandestinity, of course - the repentant scoundrel learned to use all sorts of silly and sly tricks and persuasions, to get his constantly tense companion some time to rest, or to eat, even if it were just once in a while. He definetely saw no bother in the fact that the only place where the enslaved policeman could have a proper night of sleep was in the warm nest between a certain thief's chest, and one or two fluffy blankets.
The few exceptions were the annoying, unnecesary situations he spared to make his very best Inspector pose, and be more resistent than his usual.
The bloke was an Atheist and came to ask for sanctuary in the Chuch; to beg for the blessed interference of a man whose kindness and wisdom he overlook and misunderstood.
But he didn't ask for help to the man who know him better than anyone, who kept the most precious and most dangerous secret of his wounded heart.
The silent rejection, a quiet goodbye, sounded loud and clear in Sid's heart. The pain in the con artist's chest was not new. Seeing the Father go back with the Army, to the War; watching Susie go in a bus to London. Biding farewell to a beloved person always hurt the same.
Although, the family had an urgent problem right now. Thomas Sullivan was an innocent man, who brought them a case to solve, and a need of justice to be attended.
The man came, in a moment of despair, to ask the protection of the family. Regardless of how many times he'd soon ask to be abandoned again, none of them would leave him in his darkest hour. Even less a penitent rascal.
3.
When the Father organized the family's combined efforts, Sidney adored the idea of playing the living dummy, a running bait in the police's man hunt. He was already well-used to playing tag with the coppers; a fox could easily run away from a troop of mastodonts.
Throwing the recalcitrant's suit and hat in the river was just a bonus. Such a typical, perfect specimen of well-bred city boy, always obsessed in keeping an immaculate elegance, would be livid after the end of the situation, when he came back home, put his things back in order, and noticed that the coat and the fedora were missing.
Nobody needed to know about the miliseconds of hesitation spent by the young rogue, because the hat and the gabardine still smelled like their owner.
A whiff of that mixture. Cologne, tea, ink from the fountain pen, rain, aftershave. The atmosphere impregnated in the cottage, when it was still a living house. An attractive perfume, painfully calling to his missing heart, and his needy senses.
The sounds of whistles and runnings brought him back to reality.
Whoever saw the shambles of dark blue fabric, floating in the peaceful early morning currents of the river, could only think that the runaway, in an act of despair, threw himself in the cold waters of Hambleston, to avoid the hangman's rope.
When Carter got back to the presbytery, he'd expose the found family's smarts, and maybe he'd succeed at calling Sullivan back to reason.
May God have mercy of the person who needed Sidney Carter, Agnostic hedonist, professional madcap, and reformed criminal, to be adviced back to the common sense!
 4.
 Lady F. brought news and evidence. The Father, a perfect deduction. Mrs. M., a newly-sewn disguise, and Sid, the overview of enemy territory, and a perfect distraction to cover the theft.
... Naturally, he didn't listen to the voice of wisdom.
He reacted just like his predecessor, Valentine. An unkown observer would think that the younger officer was interested in no more than getting another accomplishment to his starry curriculum.
A distant illusion.
Of course that he'd get back into damn "copper mode", and refuse the family's help, to carry an impossible burden alone, and risk his life in vain.
"Do you really think I'd let a cold case loose in my Evidence Room?? Besides, he doesn't know what he's looking for!"
Despite the extreme situation, the reluctant accomplice was still an adorable sight, and a lovely company. The grumpiness with which he hid the obvious vulnerability broke the trespasser's heart. And the ironic answers to all bickering amused him to no end.
Of course, that sourpuss would get even sourer if Sidney remarked on how he looked like an excited thief carring his prey, when he laid avid hands in the clue, and got distracted with the possibilities it opened.
In reality, both got distracted. They went away safe and sound, because they owned their lifes to Sgt. Goodfellow. Two more souls who'd vouch for the giant's pure heart, when God welcomed him into Heaven.
Sullivan was not an ungrateful man, although his inflexibility could inspire envy in a stone; and his stubborness, in an immortal entity.
He went alone to the station, in the pursuit of the dead jounalist's briefcase. Like that wasn't enough, followed the Father, whom he'd mistaken for an interested trader in favour of the conspirators, and nearly got both killed by Harriet Greensleaves, an evil woman successfully disguised as a victim of domestic abuse.
Sidney would like that the stubborn innocent could learn to trust the family without the cost of more lifes.
 5.
Sid would also like to be free of the need of waiting an entire week, in bitter suspense, after going back home... or to his caravan... in a cold night, of rare clean, starry sky, after drinking his last pints at the Red Lion, before the court and the stay of some months in the fridge, and finding a brown paper bag on his tiny, wobbly table.
The intact, labled package, exactly as it was in the shelf at the police station. Inside, the evidence, plus a bonus, the case file.
He still was the most upstanding, honest man in town, and paid all of his debts accordingly. On the other hand, he was susceptible to the bad influence of a cheap thief, who now smiled from ear to ear.
Immediately sober, Sidney ran up the field and the dusty road after, in a mad dash to the police cottage.
Didn't even need to think about picking locks in doors or windows. There was the lonely inhabitant, sat by the back door, with a mug of cold tea in a hand, and a star map, just like the one kept by the Father in St. Mary's library, in the other. A rare sight in shirtsleeves, an insomniac, unsheltered and placid, sitting in the cold night, playing a staring contest against the sky.
The quiet stare flew to the newcomer, just for the time needed to sign that his arrival was noticed, before it went back to the counting of stars and galaxies. Like this was more natural than a worker resting in bed, after a long, tiring day.
Regardless of the light, or its absence, around the two man, Sid known that his interlocutor hadn't slept in days, maybe weeks; and that he refused any superior orders, medical attention, or other disciplines that came with a prescription for barbiturates.
He knew and felt the extension of the dark circles under the hazel eyes, the pain and oppresion, physical and mental, the wounds, the scars, the bruises, as well as if they were upon his own flesh.
Also knew that he'd need a silver tongue to convince the benefactor of the sincerity of his gratitude, and his offer of caring feelings.
A simple, modest thief, a man of insignificant crimes and petty ambitions, had his little skills in his hands, not in his words.
There was only the easiest way to start. He sat in the stone floor, close to the back door of the cottage, and closed the distance between the policeman and himself with the package.
"Evening, Tom."
No answer, but at least now he had some attention.
Practically every single person with whom the austere Inspector had interacted with would hate the intensity of that stare. A silent, gloomy attention, thal almost never blinked, and reminded the unlucky observer of a loud, clear, constant warning of "Keep away!".
Sid also had a body language that went misunderstood by most of the people who passed through his life. And, for the sake of his hard-earned livelihood, learned to discern other postures that went off the beaten path. Among them, there was Tom's unique way to keep people at arm's lenght, to evaluate the people around him, to calculate all possiblities to reveal the minimum possible about himself, and to avoid to get even more hurt, at all costs.
Nothing could be more appealing, more unresistible, to Sid, as the potential of the shy stargazer giving him his hurt trust again.
All at his reach was gratitude and retribuition.
"Thanks, handsome. Thank you, a lot. You saved my sorry skin..."
The compliment, to his aesthetic beauty, or to his gentlemany, thankless honesty, made him look away.
Or maybe was he blushing? How sweet.
"Without your goodness, I'd spend six months in a damn cell."
The other voice failed in a hesitant answer.
"I thought you saw it as just the payment of a debt... Nothing more."
So, that was the poor sweetheart's problem, all the time. He haven't let him down, he lost all hope, before everyone, and bid him farewell. After all, he had all reasons to believe he'd come back dead, after the encounter with the "Enlighted". At the end of the hellish ordeal, the clueless upstanding didn't know how to thank the beloved accomplice for the victory.
The same innocent of always.
Relieved and even more grateful, Sid grinned and shaked the package.
"No way! We were in the thing against the Illu... Illumi... Illumi-whatever... those guys..."
It was so good to see him trying to hide a smile, trough the corner of that beautiful mouth, no matter how briefly.
"... 'cause you came to us, and asked for our help. You got into the family, you're one of us now. And we never let each other down. You'll never see any of us, left to get drown, in the boiling water..."
While his attention was still into holding back some mirth, Sid could hide his own blush, and gather the bone to say the few words still missing from his speech.
"I'd get into your thing anyway, 'cause I love you, and I wouldn't sit still and watch you get arrested for something you'd never do!"
The usual guarded expression in the stoic face opened in naive stunning.
"What??"
It wasn't typical, seeing a man who could force confessions from cold-blooded killers, getting speechless after a talk with a small-time thief. However, it was even funnier than stealing evidence, or exchanging banter with him.
"And now, because you're family, I have even more reason to love you, and take good care of you."
Sid ignored the discomfort of his burning cheeks, and smirked again, before getting up, and taking the other unprotected body with his.
"That's it, mate. When have you last slept? Or ate? Or had any medicine for these wounds??"
"I can't remember... "
Merciful Lord. He felt so cold and rigid. Felt, now more than ever, like a figure cast in stone, marble, or some rusty metal. If all he could do was answer his questions with a weak voice, he was terrible exhausted, maybe even sick.
Or just a bit stunned, with the feelings that neither of them had never confessed.
"Your working hours are already over, Tom. Get over your Inspetor mode. Let's go home. Come back to me."
The cottage was still bereft of the mismatched fusion of order and mess, zeal and forgetfullness; the environment of an inhabitant who was nearly always out, who could almost never stop for a while and enjoy its comfort. The atmosphere Sid remembered and missed was still not there.
Tom was very shy and introverted, and Sid didn't want to think on how devastated he felt, going back to the place that slowly became his home, and see it invaded, nearly destroyed, brutally ransacked by the search of evidence that had never even been there.
First, the kind-hearted rascal would take good care of the living. And after, he'd help him... as much as possible... to take care of the home. Their home, with some hope.
The door closed behind them, and he sheltered the slightly smaller body in a long, timeless embrace, a hug like they missed for uncountable days, lived by both like infinite, bitter years. Adored each inch of the body melted against his own, molded in a perfect fit, and the quiet relieved sigh, impossible to discern from whose mouth it went, and Sid didn't care; too busy in feeling dematerialize, in his body, the tension he didn't know that was guarded there for too long.
Bending down, just a little, he got drunk in Tom's smell, before kissing his hair, his forehead, his temples, his lips, and delight in the heat that slowly, so slowly, enveloped both their bodies.
Under any other circunstances he'd love to caress, spoil and venerate each little part of that delectable body, before pleasing them both in loving possession. He'd love to watch the quiet, stoic expression melting into innocent, stunned pleasure. With some reluctance, the former con man let go of the luscious mouth, and fell even more in love with it and its owner, and the needy murmur it couldn't bite back. Also let go of of their embrace, just enough to open the cuffs of the black-haired man's shirt sleeves, and to let his braces loose, before resting a hand in his still bruised wrist, and the other in the back of his neck, and call both their attentions to other needs, more urgents in that moment.
"Come here. Let's give you a nice warm bath, and put something in these wounds."
The insomniac still had some complaints, something about not being a child, neither being under no pain and suffering no wounds;and the ultimate proof of his clean bill of health was his presence at home, instead of the Cottage Hospital in the nearest town.
Or maybe that was what Sid could telepatically guess, from his lover's rough, broken voice, and the words suffocated by the face pressed against the crook of his neck, and the desperate hands squeezing his back.
“It's all right. I'm not letting go of you any sooner. Come here.”
He dozed in the warm water of the tub, and was totally unaware of Sidney's furious, horrified gaze. Was just too lost, far away from the borders of conscience, trying to find out, why was him in the water, and not in the backyard, counting stars, like usual, or in the armchair in the sitting room, curled up with a book, or in the bed, under the cocoon of blankets that he hid under in the coldest nights. Didn't notice the loving, careful hands washing and massaging his body, neither the pained eyes full of empathy, making an inventary of his cuts, bruises and wounds.
Didn't feel the ointment in his hurting flesh, nor the new bandages in the wrists, ribs and right hand. His very tired, green and naive eyes opened up on their own accord, well-fixed, but completely blind to his beloved. Like he dreamed of his presence, but the solidity of the dream was more strange than its irreality.
Wasn't used to sleeping, even less dreaming. There was never a safe, peaceful place to do it. Lived in constant alert, kept his eyes open, for the maximum of possible time, and when he closed them, only nightmares appeared before his eyelids. Usually, the creatures there were, indeed, pretty solid, and had really big hands. But their touch was cold, bloody and painful; never warm and soothing.
Since his eyes were unable to show him a logic image, they went closed again.
Sid washed himself in a hurry, quickly got rid from the smell of alcohol in his body and breath. Had years of practice into going to work, absolutely functional, after a good, long night ot drinking and brawling. Got up and off the tub, taking Tom with him, before getting them both dry, and dressing his wounds in new bandages.
Tried to tell his own heavy mind that dressing him in some pyjama bottoms was hard because he was a very, very attractive image, so perfectly into his reach, so effective at getting him distracted. Both the petty man and his conscience knew that it was the relief of finally, finally see that he was safe and resting. The usually tense muscles, the sinew that was dead cold not too long before, were now warm and malleable to the touch, like Mrs. M's homemade bread dough.
Sid chuckled with his own comparation, and with how it'd affect both people who were the subjects in his figure of speech. His delighted mirth grew when he felt Tom's hands tangling in his torso, searching for him in a tired, slack grip, treading his chest like a sleeping cat.
He retributed the kind caress, in a continuous, careful touch on the young man's naked back. His hands roamed carefully over the recent bruises, and other scars, older, probably from the War, things that Tom was terribly ashamed of talking, even more of showing. The con man delighted in feeling the body nestled in his chest relax even more, in warm docility. Threw the blankets over them both, and fell asleep, enjoying the shelter of mutual conforting, healing warmth.
Tom took several hours to get back even a shred of his conscience. Didn't remember when was the last time he slept trough the night. His head felt like full of cotton. His already very off notion of time went away, along with the sunlight streaming through the window. Tried a clumsy movement to sit up in the bed, and after waking Sid up, accidentally, ended back in the lazy brunet's chest.
"Morning, handsome. It's your day off. Come back here!"
"??"
Sid exulted. He wouldn't lose his freedom, nor the contact with the family, nor even the man he loved even more, after fighting those darn conspirators.
They were both alive, whole, free, cleaned their wounds that were slowly closing, while they could rest to fight another day.
Regardless of the adventures, news, or dangers brought by the next sun, Sid was feeling optimistic and well ready to face whatever would appear in their way. Being a petty, mediocre small-time thief haven't made him unable to fight world-level conspirators, for the sake of the safety of his beloved and his family.
 Tom couldn't struggle for more than some seconds, trying in vain to awake his blurry conscience. Hands, enormous, kind and warm, ran over his back, the hands from the dream, counting, feeling, playing with his vertebrae and his shoulder blades. Their caress molded and rebuild his nerves and bones, transforming him into a shapeless, thoughtless mass of confort.Didn't stop to ask himself about why was him in bed, instead of the tub, or why Sid was there. Didn't have strenght to more than fall back asleep.
The reformed criminal smiled to his innocent lover, adoring the pleasure of watching him, and the illusion of protecting him, while he finally got some rest after his hellish ordeal.

God bless you all on this Palm Sunday of the Lord's Passion!
Gospel LK 22:14—23:56
When the hour came, Jesus took his place at table with the apostles. He said to them, "I have eagerly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer, for, I tell you, I shall not eat it again until there is fulfillment in the kingdom of God." Then he took a cup, gave thanks, and said, "Take this and share it among yourselves; for I tell you that from this time on I shall not drink of the fruit of the vine until the kingdom of God comes." Then he took the bread, said the blessing, broke it, and gave it to them, saying, "This is my body, which will be given for you; do this in memory of me." And likewise the cup after they had eaten, saying, "This cup is the new covenant in my blood, which will be shed for you. "And yet behold, the hand of the one who is to betray me is with me on the table; for the Son of Man indeed goes as it has been determined; but woe to that man by whom he is betrayed." And they began to debate among themselves who among them would do such a deed. Then an argument broke out among them about which of them should be regarded as the greatest. He said to them, "The kings of the Gentiles lord it over them and those in authority over them are addressed as 'Benefactors'; but among you it shall not be so. Rather, let the greatest among you be as the youngest, and the leader as the servant. For who is greater: the one seated at table or the one who serves? Is it not the one seated at table? I am among you as the one who serves. It is you who have stood by me in my trials; and I confer a kingdom on you, just as my Father has conferred one on me, that you may eat and drink at my table in my kingdom; and you will sit on thrones judging the twelve tribes of Israel. "Simon, Simon, behold Satan has demanded to sift all of you like wheat, but I have prayed that your own faith may not fail; and once you have turned back, you must strengthen your brothers." He said to him, "Lord, I am prepared to go to prison and to die with you." But he replied, "I tell you, Peter, before the cock crows this day, you will deny three times that you know me." He said to them, "When I sent you forth without a money bag or a sack or sandals, were you in need of anything?" "No, nothing, " they replied. He said to them, "But now one who has a money bag should take it, and likewise a sack, and one who does not have a sword should sell his cloak and buy one. For I tell you that this Scripture must be fulfilled in me, namely, He was counted among the wicked; and indeed what is written about me is coming to fulfillment." Then they said, "Lord, look, there are two swords here." But he replied, "It is enough!" Then going out, he went, as was his custom, to the Mount of Olives, and the disciples followed him. When he arrived at the place he said to them, "Pray that you may not undergo the test." After withdrawing about a stone's throw from them and kneeling, he prayed, saying, "Father, if you are willing, take this cup away from me; still, not my will but yours be done." And to strengthen him an angel from heaven appeared to him. He was in such agony and he prayed so fervently that his sweat became like drops of blood falling on the ground. When he rose from prayer and returned to his disciples, he found them sleeping from grief. He said to them, "Why are you sleeping? Get up and pray that you may not undergo the test." While he was still speaking, a crowd approached and in front was one of the Twelve, a man named Judas. He went up to Jesus to kiss him. Jesus said to him, "Judas, are you betraying the Son of Man with a kiss?" His disciples realized what was about to happen, and they asked, "Lord, shall we strike with a sword?" And one of them struck the high priest's servant and cut off his right ear. But Jesus said in reply, "Stop, no more of this!" Then he touched the servant's ear and healed him. And Jesus said to the chief priests and temple guards and elders who had come for him, "Have you come out as against a robber, with swords and clubs? Day after day I was with you in the temple area, and you did not seize me; but this is your hour, the time for the power of darkness." After arresting him they led him away and took him into the house of the high priest; Peter was following at a distance. They lit a fire in the middle of the courtyard and sat around it, and Peter sat down with them. When a maid saw him seated in the light, she looked intently at him and said, "This man too was with him." But he denied it saying, "Woman, I do not know him." A short while later someone else saw him and said, "You too are one of them"; but Peter answered, "My friend, I am not." About an hour later, still another insisted, "Assuredly, this man too was with him, for he also is a Galilean." But Peter said, "My friend, I do not know what you are talking about." Just as he was saying this, the cock crowed, and the Lord turned and looked at Peter; and Peter remembered the word of the Lord, how he had said to him, "Before the cock crows today, you will deny me three times." He went out and began to weep bitterly. The men who held Jesus in custody were ridiculing and beating him. They blindfolded him and questioned him, saying, "Prophesy!  Who is it that struck you?" And they reviled him in saying many other things against him. When day came the council of elders of the people met, both chief priests and scribes, and they brought him before their Sanhedrin. They said, "If you are the Christ, tell us, " but he replied to them, "If I tell you, you will not believe, and if I question, you will not respond. But from this time on the Son of Man will be seated at the right hand of the power of God." They all asked, "Are you then the Son of God?" He replied to them, "You say that I am." Then they said, "What further need have we for testimony? We have heard it from his own mouth." Then the whole assembly of them arose and brought him before Pilate. They brought charges against him, saying, "We found this man misleading our people; he opposes the payment of taxes to Caesar and maintains that he is the Christ, a king." Pilate asked him, "Are you the king of the Jews?" He said to him in reply, "You say so." Pilate then addressed the chief priests and the crowds, "I find this man not guilty." But they were adamant and said, "He is inciting the people with his teaching throughout all Judea, from Galilee where he began even to here." On hearing this Pilate asked if the man was a Galilean; and upon learning that he was under Herod's jurisdiction, he sent him to Herod who was in Jerusalem at that time. Herod was very glad to see Jesus; he had been wanting to see him for a long time, for he had heard about him and had been hoping to see him perform some sign. He questioned him at length, but he gave him no answer. The chief priests and scribes, meanwhile, stood by accusing him harshly. Herod and his soldiers treated him contemptuously and mocked him, and after clothing him in resplendent garb, he sent him back to Pilate. Herod and Pilate became friends that very day, even though they had been enemies formerly. Pilate then summoned the chief priests, the rulers, and the people and said to them, "You brought this man to me and accused him of inciting the people to revolt. I have conducted my investigation in your presence and have not found this man guilty of the charges you have brought against him, nor did Herod, for he sent him back to us. So no capital crime has been committed by him. Therefore I shall have him flogged and then release him." But all together they shouted out, "Away with this man! Release Barabbas to us." — Now Barabbas had been imprisoned for a rebellion that had taken place in the city and for murder. — Again Pilate addressed them, still wishing to release Jesus, but they continued their shouting, "Crucify him!  Crucify him!" Pilate addressed them a third time, "What evil has this man done? I found him guilty of no capital crime. Therefore I shall have him flogged and then release him." With loud shouts, however, they persisted in calling for his crucifixion, and their voices prevailed. The verdict of Pilate was that their demand should be granted. So he released the man who had been imprisoned for rebellion and murder, for whom they asked, and he handed Jesus over to them to deal with as they wished. As they led him away they took hold of a certain Simon, a Cyrenian, who was coming in from the country; and after laying the cross on him, they made him carry it behind Jesus. A large crowd of people followed Jesus, including many women who mourned and lamented him. Jesus turned to them and said, "Daughters of Jerusalem, do not weep for me; weep instead for yourselves and for your children for indeed, the days are coming when people will say, 'Blessed are the barren, the wombs that never bore and the breasts that never nursed.' At that time people will say to the mountains, 'Fall upon us!' and to the hills, 'Cover us!' for if these things are done when the wood is green what will happen when it is dry?" Now two others, both criminals, were led away with him to be executed. When they came to the place called the Skull, they crucified him and the criminals there, one on his right, the other on his left. Then Jesus said, "Father, forgive them, they know not what they do." They divided his garments by casting lots. The people stood by and watched; the rulers, meanwhile, sneered at him and said, "He saved others, let him save himself if he is the chosen one, the Christ of God." Even the soldiers jeered at him. As they approached to offer him wine they called out, "If you are King of the Jews, save yourself." Above him there was an inscription that read, "This is the King of the Jews." Now one of the criminals hanging there reviled Jesus, saying, "Are you not the Christ? Save yourself and us." The other, however, rebuking him, said in reply, "Have you no fear of God, for you are subject to the same condemnation? And indeed, we have been condemned justly, for the sentence we received corresponds to our crimes, but this man has done nothing criminal." Then he said, "Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom." He replied to him, "Amen, I say to you, today you will be with me in Paradise." It was now about noon and darkness came over the whole land until three in the afternoon because of an eclipse of the sun. Then the veil of the temple was torn down the middle. Jesus cried out in a loud voice, "Father, into your hands I commend my spirit"; and when he had said this he breathed his last. Here all kneel and pause for a short time. The centurion who witnessed what had happened glorified God and said, "This man was innocent beyond doubt." When all the people who had gathered for this spectacle saw what had happened, they returned home beating their breasts; but all his acquaintances stood at a distance, including the women who had followed him from Galilee and saw these events. Now there was a virtuous and righteous man named Joseph who, though he was a member of the council, had not consented to their plan of action. He came from the Jewish town of Arimathea and was awaiting the kingdom of God. He went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus. After he had taken the body down, he wrapped it in a linen cloth and laid him in a rock-hewn tomb in which no one had yet been buried. It was the day of preparation, and the sabbath was about to begin. The women who had come from Galilee with him followed behind, and when they had seen the tomb and the way in which his body was laid in it, they returned and prepared spices and perfumed oils. Then they rested on the sabbath according to the commandment.
Or LK 23:1-49

Pas. Johnraj Lamech
🍁

The Conjuring 3 Sheds Light on Arne Cheyenne Johnson Trial That Rocked Connecticut
https://ift.tt/eA8V8J
The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It continues the arc of the Conjuring franchise, exploring the continuing misadventures of demonologists Ed and Lorraine Warren (Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga), while The Nun and the Annabelle movies tracked the backstories of the pious paranormal pioneers. The newest entry dramatizes one of their most famous cases, which set several legal and historic precedents.
The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It will be the first main entry in the horror series not helmed by James Wan, who is producing along with Peter Safran. Michael Chaves (The Curse of La Llorona) directed the film from David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick’s screenplay, with a story by Johnson-McGoldrick and Wan.
The story involves the very first murder committed in Brookline, Connecticut, in its 193-year history. It is also the first U.S. legal case where a defendant used the “devil made me do it” defense. Arne Cheyenne Johnson, played by Ruairi O’Connor in the film, stabbed his landlord, Alan Bono, more than 20 times with a pocketknife on February 16, 1981. In what was known in the press as the “Demon Murder Trial,” Johnson claimed demonic possession as his motive.
“The courts have dealt with the existence of God,” Johnson’s attorney Martin Minnella said at the time. “Now they’re going to have to deal with the existence of the Devil.” Ed Warren testified in court the possession was rooted in Johnson’s connection to his fiancée, Debbie Glatzel.
Johnson moved into Glatzel’s home in May 1980. A month later, her 11-year-old brother, David Glatzel, played by Julian Hilliard, began complaining about increasingly violent encounters with an old man. It escalated until the boy would wake up in the middle of the night crying hysterically. He said he had visions of a “man with big black eyes, a thin face with animal features and jagged teeth, pointed ears, horns, and hoofs,” according to People. After first discounting the boy’s story, Glatzel’s family asked a priest from a local church to bless the house. When nothing changed, the family called in the Warrens.
Over the course of the possession, David gained 60 pounds. During episodes, he appeared to exhibit special abilities, including levitation and precognition. He even predicted the murder Johnson would go on to commit. The Warrens called in priests from the Catholic Church to help them perform “four minor rites of exorcism” to expel the 43 demons which took up residence in David’s body. While Father Nicholas Grieco of the diocese of Bridgeport denied any exorcism was performed, the Warrens reported the process took several days.
The Warrens Made Me Do It
The first trailer catches the Warrens as they head to Connecticut to investigate a troubled family. The crusading couple soon find evidence of a curse and claim there is deviltry afoot. The trailer also offers a glimpse of the exorcism which made the whole thing possible.
During the exorcism, witnesses stated they saw a demon transfer from David to Johnson. Ed Warren laid the blame on Johnson, who made the “fatal mistake” of challenging the demons, saying, “Take me on, leave my little buddy alone.”
After the exorcism, the boy was completely cured. Johnson’s defense stated that he hadn’t been the same after David Glatzel’s exorcism. Debbie Glatzel testified that Johnson’s behavior was similar to her brother’s. “Cheyenne would go into a trance,” she told People. “He would growl and say he saw the beast. Later he would have no memory of it. It was just like David.”
Debbie Glatzel worked for the victim at his Brookfield kennel. According to the testimony, Alan Bono took his employees, including Debbie and her nine-year-old cousin Mary, out to lunch on the day of the incident. Bono got drunk, grabbed Mary, and refused to let her go. Johnson attacked him with a five-inch pocket knife. Witnesses described Johnson behaving “like an animal,” stabbing Bono repeatedly, mostly in his chest.
When word got out Lorraine Warren told the Brookfield Police that Johnson was possessed at the time of the crime, the trial became a media circus. Johnson’s defense attorney cited two British court cases permitting a defense based on demonic possession. Judge Robert Callahan ruled against the defense, arguing the claim could not be objectively proven by evidence or substantiated by science.
Johnson changed his plea to self-defense and all the surrounding media attention vanished. The jury found Johnson guilty of first-degree manslaughter on November 24, 1981. He received a sentence of 10 to 20 years. He served 5, for good behavior. After his release, Johnson and Debbie Glatzel got married.
Th case was later dramatized in the 1983 NBC television movie The Demon Murder Case, which starred Andy Griffith, Cloris Leachman, and Kevin Bacon.
Lorraine Warren wrote The Devil in Connecticut with Gerald Brittle about the case. When the book was reissued in 2006, Debbie’s brother Carl Glatzel sued for damages, calling the occult claims a hoax engineered by the Warrens, who “concocted a phony story about demons in an attempt to get rich and famous at our expense.”
Warner Bros. Pictures’ The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It is the eighth movie in the Conjuring Universe, which is one of the highest-grossing movie franchises in horror history. The Warrens’ estate still owns the real doll which inspired the Annabelle trilogy.

The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It will hit theaters and HBO Max on June 4.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The scriptures. May God bless the reading of His holy word.
Then you will be handed over to be persecuted and put to death, and you will be hated by all nations because of Me.
Matthew 24:9
You must be on your guard. You will be handed over to the local councils and flogged in the synagogues. On account of Me you will stand before governors and kings as witnesses to them. And the gospel must first be preached to all nations. Whenever you are arrested and brought to trial, do not worry beforehand about what to say. Just say whatever is given you at the time, for it is not you speaking, but the Holy Spirit.
Mark 13:9-11
But before all this, they will seize you and persecute you. They will hand you over to synagogues and put you in prison, and you will be brought before kings and governors, and all on account of My name. And so you will bear testimony to Me. But make up your mind not to worry beforehand how you will defend yourselves. For I will give you words and wisdom that none of your adversaries will be able to resist or contradict.
Luke 21:12-15
This ends today’s reading from God's holy word. Thanks be to God.
Watch out for imposters!
Watch out for wars!
Watch out for earthquakes, famines, pestilences, fearful events, and other great signs from heaven!
These were all things Jesus was telling His first four followers - Peter, Andrew, James, and John - as well as us, as He mentioned signs in the form of events that would precede His return to earth. They would have been enough on their own but Jesus wasn’t finished giving warnings to His believers as we see in today’s continuation of this devotional series. Look again at His words here:
Then you will be handed over to be persecuted and put to death, and you will be hated by all nations because of Me. Matthew 24:9
You must be on your guard. You will be handed over to the local councils and flogged in the synagogues. On account of Me you will stand before governors and kings as witnesses to them. And the gospel must first be preached to all nations. Whenever you are arrested and brought to trial, do not worry beforehand about what to say. Just say whatever is given you at the time, for it is not you speaking, but the Holy Spirit. Mark 13:9-11
But before all this, they will seize you and persecute you. They will hand you over to synagogues and put you in prison, and you will be brought before kings and governors, and all on account of My name. And so you will bear testimony to Me. But make up your mind not to worry beforehand how you will defend yourselves. For I will give you words and wisdom that none of your adversaries will be able to resist or contradict. Luke 21:12-15
What Jesus is saying here is clear. Anyone who professes their belief in Him will be persecuted for that belief. His words would come to life as His followers set out to carry on His work after He ascended as they were subjected to the same harassment and discrimination He suffered through during His earthly ministry. Much of this harassment and discrimination early on was from the same Jewish authorities too. In fact, we see many parallels between Jesus and Stephen who comes on the scene in the Book of Acts, Chapter 6. Persecuted and falsely accused, Stephen was hauled in front of the Sanhedrin and received the same unfair trial that Jesus received earlier. Thus, the verdict was the same as well. Stephen was issued the death penalty just as His Savior had, only by way of stoning instead of crucifixion.
This was just the start of the persecution movement as Christians have suffered it ever since, even up to today. If you doubt this, check out the following organizations that devote their time to advocate for persecuted Christians around the world:
The Voice of the Martyrs            https://www.persecution.com/
and
International Christian Concern   https://www.persecution.org/
Reading through either of these websites, it’s easy to see how persecution is alive and well today, and it’s going to get worse before it gets better.
How bad will it get as we approach the time when Jesus will return?
He tells us in our passages. Here’s what to expect:
1. Hatred.
It was hatred that led a group of Jewish religious authorities to act sinfully while falsely accusing, abusing, and then crucifying the one and only Son of the God Most High. And as we see Jesus promise, it would be this hatred of Him that would carry over to His disciples. All the ensuing things to expect are grounded in this Christ-centered hatred.
2. Arrest and Incarceration.
Jesus makes sure His followers know that they will be taken into formal custody for following Him. Incarceration for Christian beliefs will happen on account of His name.
3. Abuse.
Floggings can be expected and believers can expect to suffer physical abuse just as their Savior did.
4. Trial.
Once arrested, Christian believers will be brought to trial and stand before governors and kings to be held accountable for their religious association with Jesus. During these trials, note how Jesus encourages His disciples to use them as a time of ministry, a time to testify and share the Gospel with those who are judging them.
Then Jesus gives all His Christian followers comfort and assurance. For they would not have to worry about what to say when being judged in court because He, Jesus Himself, would provide them the words to say via the Holy Spirit. These words would be grounded in truth because they come from a perfectly true Savior and therefore a Christian’s adversaries would be left unable to contradict the statements provided by Jesus.
Keep this promise in mind the next time you fall under persecution for your belief in Christ.
5. Death.
Despite testimony through words from Jesus via the Holy Spirit, Christian believers would still be put to death, murdered just as He was although the killing might happen in a different way than His.
Hatred. Arrest and Incarceration. Abuse. Trial. Death.
This is what is happening today as Christians are persecuted on a small scale globally but one day this harassment and discrimination will one day have a much broader scope. When that day comes, no one should act surprised because Jesus has already told us that it is a sign of the times, the times preceding His return to earth.
Tomorrow, we’ll look at the fifth devotion in the series as Jesus warns us of other things that will impact Christian believers in the future.
Amen.
In Christ,
Mark
To be wrongfully sentenced to death.
yet, in the process to unveil a new covenant of grace that became the sacrifice to take the place of our own death sentence due to sin that separated us from our Creator.
this is the significance that is documented in Today’s reading of chapter 23 in the book of Luke as the 3rd book in the New Testament:
[Jesus before Pilate]
The entire council stood at once and took Jesus to Pilate, the Roman governor. They accused him with false testimony before the governor, saying, “This man tells us we’re not to pay our taxes to Caesar. And he proclaims himself to be Christ the King and Messiah. He’s a deceiver of our nation.”
Pilate asked Jesus, “Is this true? Are you their king and Messiah?”
Jesus answered, “It is true.”
Pilate turned to the high priests and to the gathered crowd and said, “This man has committed no crime. I find nothing wrong with him.”
But they yelled and demanded that Pilate do something, saying, “He has stirred up our nation, misleading people from the moment he began teaching in Galilee until he has come here to Jerusalem!”
[Jesus before Herod]
When Pilate heard the word Galilee, he asked if Jesus was a Galilean, as he knew that Antipas, son of Herod, was the ruler over Galilee. When they told him yes, Pilate saw a way out of his problem. Herod happened to be in Jerusalem at that time, so Pilate sent Jesus to Antipas.
When Antipas saw Jesus, he was elated, for he had heard a great deal about his ministry and wanted Jesus to perform a miracle in front of him. Antipas questioned him at length, but Jesus wouldn’t even answer him.
All the while the high priests and religious leaders stood by, hatefully accusing Jesus of wrongdoing, so that Antipas and his soldiers treated him with scorn and mocking. Antipas put an elegant purple robe on Jesus and sent him back to Pilate. That day, Antipas, son of Herod, and Pilate healed the rift between themselves due to old hostilities and they became good friends.
[Jesus Sentenced to Death]
Pilate gathered the people together with the high priests and all the religious leaders of the nation and told them, “You have presented this man to me and charged him with stirring a rebellion among the people. But I say to you that I have examined him here in your presence and have put him on trial. My verdict is that none of the charges you have brought against him are true. I find no fault in him. And I sent him to Antipas, son of Herod, who also, after questioning him, has found him not guilty. Since he has done nothing deserving of death, I have decided to punish him with a severe flogging and release him.” For it was Pilate’s custom to honor the Jewish holiday by releasing a prisoner.
When the crowd heard this, they went wild. Erupting with anger, they cried out, “No! Take this one away and release Barabbas!” For Barabbas had been thrown in prison for robbery and murder.
Pilate, wanting to release Jesus, tried to convince them it was best to let Jesus go. But they cried out over and over, “Crucify him! Crucify him!”
A third time, Pilate asked the crowd, “What evil crime has this man committed that I should have him crucified? I haven’t found one thing that warrants a death sentence! I will have him flogged severely and then release him.”
But the people and the high priests, shouting like a mob, screamed out at the top of their lungs, “No! Crucify him! Crucify him!”
Finally their shouts and screams succeeded. Pilate caved in to the crowd and ordered that the will of the people be done. Then he released the guilty murderer Barabbas, as they had insisted, and handed Jesus over to be crucified.
[The Crucifixion of Jesus]
As the guards led Jesus to be crucified, there was an African man in the crowd named Simon, from Libya. He had just arrived from a rural village to keep the Feast of the Passover. The guards laid Jesus’ cross on Simon’s shoulders and forced him to walk behind Jesus and carry his cross.
Massive crowds gathered to follow Jesus, including a number of women, who were wailing with sorrow over him. Jesus turned to them and said, “Daughters of Jerusalem, do not weep for me. You should be weeping for yourselves and your children. For the day is coming when it will not be the women with children who are blessed but the childless. Then you will say, ‘The barren women are the most fortunate! Those who have never given birth and never nursed a child—they are more fortunate than we are, for they will never see their children put to death!’ And the people will cry out for the mountains and hills to fall on top of them to hide them from all that is to come. For if this is what they do to the living Branch, what will they do with the dead ones?”
Two criminals were led away with Jesus, and all three were to be executed together. When they came to the place that is known as The Skull, the guards crucified Jesus, nailing him on the center cross between the two criminals. While they were nailing Jesus to the cross, he prayed over and over, “Father, forgive them, for they don’t know what they’re doing.”
The soldiers, after they crucified him, gambled over his clothing.
A great crowd gathered to watch what was happening. The religious leaders sneered at Jesus and mocked him, saying, “Look at this man! What kind of ‘chosen Messiah’ is this? He pretended to save others, but he can’t even save himself!”
The soldiers joined in the mockery by offering Jesus a drink of vinegar.
Over Jesus’ head on the cross was written an inscription in Greek, Latin, and Aramaic: “This man is the king of all the Jews.” And all the soldiers laughed and scoffed at him, saying, “Hey! If you’re the king of Jews, why don’t you save yourself?”
One of the criminals hanging on the cross next to Jesus kept ridiculing him, saying, “What kind of Messiah are you? Save yourself and save us from this death!”
The criminal hanging on the other cross rebuked the man, saying, “Don’t you fear God? You’re about to die! We deserve to be condemned, for we’re just being repaid for what we’ve done. But this man—he’s done nothing wrong!”
Then he said, “I beg of you, my Lord Jesus, show me grace and take me with you into your everlasting kingdom!”
Jesus responded, “I promise you—this very day you will enter paradise with me.”
[The Death of the Savior]
It was now only midday, yet the whole world became dark for three hours as the light of the sun faded away. And suddenly in the temple the thick veil hanging in the Holy Place was ripped in two! Then Jesus cried out with a loud voice, “Father, I surrender my Spirit into your hands.” And he took his last breath and died.
When the Roman captain overseeing the crucifixion witnessed all that took place, he was awestruck and glorified God. Acknowledging what they had done, he said, “I have no doubt; we just killed the righteous one.”
The crowds that had gathered to observe this spectacle went back to their homes, overcome with deep sorrow and devastated by what they had witnessed. But standing off at a distance were some who truly knew Jesus, and the women who had followed him all the way from Galilee were keeping vigil.
There was also a member of the Jewish council named Joseph, from the village of Ramah, a good-hearted, honorable man who was eager for the appearing of God’s kingdom realm. He had strongly disagreed with the decision of the council to crucify Jesus. He came before Pilate and asked permission to take the body of Jesus and give him a proper burial, and Pilate granted his request. So he took the body from the cross and wrapped it in a winding sheet of linen and placed it in a new, unused tomb chiseled out of solid rock. It was Preparation Day, and the Sabbath was fast approaching.
The women who had been companions of Jesus from the beginning saw all this take place and watched as the body was laid in the tomb. Afterward they returned home and prepared fragrant spices and ointments and were planning to anoint his body after the Sabbath was completed, according to the commandments of the law.
The Book of Luke, Chapter 23 (The Passion Translation)
Today’s paired chapter of the Testaments is Joshua 20 that documents designated Asylum cities:
[Asylum-Cities]
Then God spoke to Joshua: “Tell the People of Israel: Designate the asylum-cities, as I instructed you through Moses, so that anyone who kills a person accidentally—that is, unintentionally—may flee there as a safe place of asylum from the avenger of blood.
“A person shall escape for refuge to one of these cities, stand at the entrance to the city gate, and lay out his case before the city’s leaders. The leaders must then take him into the city among them and give him a place to live with them.
“If the avenger of blood chases after him, they must not give him up—he didn’t intend to kill the person; there was no history of ill-feeling. He may stay in that city until he has stood trial before the congregation and until the death of the current high priest. Then he may go back to his own home in his hometown from which he fled.”
They set apart Kedesh in Galilee in the hills of Naphtali, Shechem in the hills of Ephraim, and Kiriath Arba (that is, Hebron) in the hills of Judah.
On the other side of the Jordan, east of Jericho, they designated Bezer on the desert plateau from the tribe of Reuben, Ramoth in Gilead from the tribe of Gad, and Golan in Bashan from the tribe of Manasseh. These were the designated cities for the People of Israel and any resident foreigner living among them, so that anyone who killed someone unintentionally could flee there and not die by the hand of the avenger of blood without a fair trial before the congregation.
The Book of Joshua, Chapter 20 (The Message)
my personal reading of the Scriptures for friday, August 21 of 2020 with a paired chapter from each Testament along with Today’s Psalms and Proverbs
A set of posts by John Parsons to go along with Today’s reading from the Bible:
There is a price to be paid for the miracle of God being manifest in our lives. The message of the cross means confessing the truth about who we are and how we have failed the test of faith. Yeshua does not appeal to the self-righteous ones to come for healing, but rather to the sin-sick and weary: "Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick. I came not to call the righteous, but sinners" (Mark 2:17). The LORD wants us to be honest with ourselves: ""Behold, You delight in truth in the inward being, and you teach me wisdom in the secret heart" (Psalm 51:6).
The Tenth Commandment says, "do not covet" anything that belongs to your neighbor (Deut. 5:21), though the Hebrew does not simply say "do not desire" (i.e., לא תְאַוֶּה) but rather "do not bring yourself into a state of desire" (i.e., לא תִתְאַוֶּה), the verb in this case (אָוַה) being "hitpael" (reflexive), that is, expressing the relationship within yourself to the truth of God. As Soren Kierkegaard once said, the "self" expresses a relation with itself, and the "how" of that relation determines what sort of self we are... God does not command us like someone might train a dog; he instructs us to awaken to what we are doing, to take responsibility for our lives, and not to yield our hearts to envy, despair, and sorrow.
The unexamined life -- especially for the follower of Yeshua -- is not worth living, and the practice of suppressing the truth about our sinful condition can lead to self-deception and even death (1 Cor. 11:30). "If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us; if we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness" (1 John 1:7-8). “Therefore, confess (ἐξομολογέω, lit. 'confess out') your sins to one another and pray (εὔχομαι) for one another, that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person (tzaddik) works great power” (James 5:16).
Notice the link between confessing our sins and praying for one another with healing... Being yashar - honest and upright - produces spiritual power and life. The word translated “pray” (euchomai) means to “wish (εὐχὴ) for oneself (or for another) the good.” Prayer is always reciprocal, as King David said in Psalm 35:13: "may what I prayed for happen to me!" (literally, tefillati al-cheki tashuv - "may it return upon my own breast").
We are all on a spiritual journey, and that means we are willing to engage in honest self-examination about our behavior. We must take time to review our lives and ask some hard questions: "How did I get to this place in my life?" "Where am I now?" "Am I where I should be?" We engage in this process of self-examination with an aim let go of the pain of the past and move forward. We find our deliverance by looking to Yeshua.
If you repent of sin without looking to Christ, away with your repentance! If you are so lamenting your sin as to forget the Savior, you have need to begin all this work over again. By no means look at your sin except as you look at Jesus. A man may hate sin just as a murderer hates the gallows – but this does not prove repentance. If I hate sin because of the punishment, I have not repented of sin – I merely regret that God is just. But if I can see sin as an offense against Jesus Christ and loathe myself because I have wounded Him, then I have a true brokenness of heart. Only under the Cross can you repent. Repentance elsewhere is remorse which clings to the sin and only dreads the punishment. Let us then seek, under God, to have a hatred of sin caused by a sight of Christ's love. - C.H. Spurgeon
We must begin by asking God for courage and strength... We must let go of the fear that we will discover the truth about who we really are -- about what we've done, what we've thought, about who we've allowed ourselves to become. Confession (ὁμολογία) means bringing yourself naked before the Divine Light to agree with the truth about who you are. Indeed, the word homologeo literally means "saying the same thing" - from ὁμός (same) and λόγος (word). We need to confess the truth if we are to be free from the pain of the past. When King David wrote, "The LORD is my Light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? (Psalm 27:1), he implied that he should even be free of fear of himself and of his past.... We also need to understand our sin in relationship to the wounds of the Savior, since without that connection, our repentance will be vain indeed.
Of course it is a struggle to keep our focus along the way, and there are various tests we all will experience, including the tests of apathy, weariness, confusion, and so on... We must ask the LORD God of Israel to awaken us to His resurrected and all-glorious Presence. His radiance fills the heaven and the earth, and by faith we take hold of hope with wonder, praise, and great joy.... May it please God to help each of us "put on the new self, created after the likeness of God in true righteousness and holiness" (Eph. 4:24). Amen. [Hebrew for Christians]
While it’s true that we express sorrow and regret for our sins - we mourn over our lives - this is an essential part of the healing process, with the end result of obtaining comfort from God (Matt. 5:4). Mere regret over sin is not enough, however, since the motive may be from shame (pride) or disappointment over some selfish loss. Esau “repented” with tears, but his wasn’t true repentance since he didn’t lament the loss of his heart to God’s love (Heb. 12:14). True repentance always leads to healing and life. When the woman from Magdala wept and washed Yeshua’s feet with her tears, he said, “I tell you, her sins, which are many, are forgiven -- for she loved much” (Luke 7:44-48). In other words, she was lavish in her love because she deeply regretted that she had missed what was most important, what she desperately needed all along... She saw her sin as blindness to God's love... After all, why would she weep over her sins unless she loved him? And how could she love him unless he first revealed his love to her? (1 John 4:19)
"For grief (λύπη) as intended by God produces a repentance (תְּשׁוּעָה) that leads to salvation, leaving no regret, but worldly grief produces death" (2 Cor. 7:10). [Hebrew for Christians]
Teshuvah, or “turning to God,” is a daily practice in our lives, of course, not just something we do during the "Forty Days of Teshuvah." We always live just one day at a time: "Each day is a little life; every waking and rising a little birth; every fresh morning a little youth; every going to rest and sleep a little death" (Arthur Schopenhauer). We often struggle with selfish attachments, but these things often become sources of unhappiness for us. Part of teshuvah is learning to let go of those things we cling to for support but which actually are holding us back... The sages liken the process of spiritual growth with the analogy of how a father might teach his infant son how to take his first steps. Once the child makes a fumbling effort to stand up, the father will come closer, extending his hands, encouraging the child to come to him. As the child takes a faltering step, the father moves back just a little so the child will try to take another step. The child may think he is making no progress reaching his goal, but the father's aim is to teach the child to walk. This story is meant to illustrate the point that you move forward as you seek, and such seeking is the way you draw close to Him:. "You will seek me and find me when you search for me with all your heart" (Jer. 29:13).
Along these lines C.S. Lewis once said: "The real problem of the Christian life comes where people do not usually look for it. It comes the very moment you wake up each morning. All your wishes and hopes for the day rush at you like wild animals. And the first job each morning consists simply in shoving them all back; in listening to that other voice, taking that other point of view, letting that other larger, stronger, quieter life come flowing in. And so on, all day. Standing back from all your natural fussings and frettings; coming in out of the wind. We can only do it for moments at first. But from these moments the new sort of life will be spreading through our system: because now we are letting work at the right part of us... ” (Mere Christianity). This is the practical outworking of what God has worked into us through the gift of his life (Phil 2:12-13). The first real step is to be connected to your Father, trusting in his loving presence, as you attempt to take a step closer to him. But do not be discouraged if you seem to be making slow progress, because the heart of your Father knows that your seeking him is essential to finding his steady hand to both uphold your way and to eventually give you the balance and strength to walk together with him... We grow as we draw close to the heart of our loving heavenly Father.
“Today is the day of salvation.” Now is the time. “Repent and experience times of refreshing from the LORD” (Acts 2:39). Let us remember to pray for one another and encourage one another while we still have the opportunity to do so. Time is short, friends. Call upon the LORD and find life! [Hebrew for Christians]
On January 8th 1697 Thomas Aikenhead was executed in Edinburgh.
So who was oor Thomas, a villain?, a murderer?, a smuggler?, or some enemy of the state? No Thomas's crime was blasphemy who took the lord's name in vain.......this would be comic if it wasn't for the tragic fact that he was executed, unlike the man in Life of Brian, who uttered the words Jehova, Thomas complained that he wished he was warming himself in hell rather than that chilly night walking past the recently built Tron Kirk on Edinburgh's Royal Mile. Well that's the simple story that the tour guides that take you round the Old Town will tell you, there is a bit more to it so I will bore you with a bit more of the detail.
Thomas Aikenhead came from a well-to-do family in Edinburgh, his father being listed as a surgeon but more probably an apothecary, a dispenser of herbs and potions. Both his parents were dead by the time he became a student at Edinburgh University at the age of 16 or 17.
His mother had been a daughter of the manse, and you would think that would have made Aikenhead wary of challenging the established religion of the time, namely the all-powerful Church of Scotland, especially while still a student and under the constant gaze of professors, lecturers and, as it turned out, his fellow students.
These were the dying days of a curious period in Scottish history. Aikenhead would have been four when the ‘Wizard of the West Bow’ Major Thomas Weir was executed in 1670. Weir was by day an extreme Calvinist but by night an incestuous Satanist and it takes no great leap of reason to see that an impressionable young boy might well have been affected by the trial and execution of a local celebrity that lived not far from him.
The 1680s was also the ‘killing time’ for the Covenanters when many died because of they worshipped their same god in differing ways!
Thomas was a keen student and an avid reader, he may or may not have known and Edinburgh bookseller,  John Frazer, who had been prosecuted after admitting either reading, or being in possession of Charles Blount’s Oracles of Reason a book I know nothing about but gather it relates to Deism, which questioned the existence or more importanyly, non-existence of God or Satan, Frazer had repented ad as it was a first offence was sackclothed and jailed in the old Tolbooth for a number of months.
Anyway, Thomas had a friend, well he thought he had a friend, Murdo Craig, but Murdo, on the sly had been keeping notes on Aitkenhead, and his dalliances with blasphemous ideals, we know that because they formed a large part of the indictment against Aikenhead.
“Nevertheless it is of verity, that you Thomas Aikenhead, shakeing off all fear of God and regaird to his majesties lawes, have now for more than a twelvemoneth by past, and upon severall of the dayes within the said space, and ane or other of the same, made it as it were your endeavour and work in severall compainies to vent your wicked blasphemies against God and our Saviour Jesus Christ, and against the holy Scriptures, and all revealled religione, in soe far as upon ane or other of the dayes forsaid, you said and affirmed, that divinity or the doctrine of theologie was a rapsidie of faigned and ill-invented nonsense, patched up partly of the morall doctrine of philosophers, and pairtly of poeticall fictions and extravagant chimeras, or words to this effect or purpose, with severall other such reproachfull expressions.”
That was just for starters. Sir James Stewart of Goodtrees, the Lord Advocate of the day, had taken a personal interest in the case and he decided to throw the whole lot of Craig’s testimony at Aikenhead who was arrested in November, 1696, and charged under the Blasphemy Act of 1661 which carried the death penalty.
He also charged Aikenhead under a more recent act, which made it a criminal offence to ‘deny, impugn or quarrel’ about the existence of God.
The prosecution papers go on to record
“You have lykwayes in discourse preferred Mahomet to the blessed Jesus, and you have said that you hoped to see Christianity greatly weakened, and that you are confident that in a short tyme it will be utterly extirpate.”
For Mahomet, read Muhammad, could young Thomas be an Islam convert in 17th century Edinburgh, I very much doubt it, they just needed to make an example of the young student, and he knew by now that he was in very great trouble and protested in effect that he was guilty only of the sin of being youthful and had been led astray by the books he had read. He also pleaded and repented of his anti-Christian beliefs and was once again a good Presbyterian.
In this way he seems to have thrown himself upon the mercy of the court. There was none. On Christmas Eve, 1696, a jury found him guilty. Sir James Stewart asked for the death penalty and it was granted and “pronounced for doom,” as Scottish judges were still saying well into the 20th century in capital punishment cases.
Aikenhead pleaded for his life to the Privy Council emphasising his youth, his dire circumstances, and the fact that he was reconciled to the Protestant religion. There was some support for the death sentence to be commuted from at least two councillors and two Church of Scotland ministers, but the General Assembly of the Kirk intervened, demanding that Aikenhead suffer “vigorous execution to curb the abounding of impiety and profanity in this land”.
In his last letter to friends, written in the Tolbooth prison in Edinburgh as he awaited execution, Aikenhead at last gave a plausible explanation for his conduct – that he had been a disappointed seeker after truth.
He wrote: “It is a principle innate and co-natural to every man to have an insatiable inclination to the truth and to seek for it as for hid treasure. So I proceeded until the more I thought thereon, the further I was from finding the verity I desired.”
In truth, in a repressed society the student had just gone too far in rejecting the doctrines of Christianity calling it “feigned and ill-invented nonsense”
Aikenhead went to this day 1697, hanged on the scaffold at Shrubhill between Edinburgh and Leith. It is said that before he died he proclaimed that moral laws were the work of governments and men.
In his hand as the noose was placed around his neck was the Holy Bible.
The execution angered some people for many years afterwards. The great English historian Thomas Babington Macaulay wrote an account of the hanging and called the execution “a crime such has never since polluted the island.”
He continued: “The preachers who were the boy’s murderers crowded round him at the gallows, and, while he was struggling in the last agony, insulted Heaven with prayers more blasphemous than any thing that he had ever uttered.”
There was other evidence of church authorities being present as Aikenhead died. He was the last man in Britain to be hanged for blasphemy.
According to Arthur Herman in his book How the Scots Invented the Modern World: The True Story of How Western Europe’s Poorest Nation Created Our World and Everything in It the execution of Aikenhead was “the last hurrah of Scotland’s Calvinist ayatollahs” before the dawning of the age of reason in the Enlightenment.
Now we can all rejoice in The Enlightenment but a full 30 years later in the small town of Dornoch in Sutherland, Janet Horne was put on trial for the “crime” of having a daughter whose feet and hands were misshapen and who had herself given birth to a son with disabilities. She was the last woman in Britain to be burned at the stake for being a witch, her death bringing to an end the “burning time” when perhaps 4000 Scottish women were executed for the crime of witchcraft.
How I Stood Witness for God Through the Persecutions
Tumblr media
By Anna, Italy
In the course of following God, we will inevitably encounter various kinds of disruptions and temptations of Satan.
 If we fail to see through Satan’s plots and overcome its temptations, we will be captured by it and lose the chance of gaining God’s salvation and entering the kingdom of heaven. So it is of great importance for each of us Christians to stand witness for God through persecutions and tribulations of Satan. Before, I also encountered Satan’s temptations, and it was God who led me to stand testimony under siege by Satan.
In December of 2016, I accepted Almighty God’s work of the last days and later preached the gospel to my daughter-in-law. We often read God’s words and watched videos from The Church of Almighty God together. However, just when I was enjoying God’s love, Satan’s disruptions came upon me quietly.
The May 28 Murder Case brought about a storm at home.
One night, I was reading God’s words sitting on the sofa in the living room, when my son came back home from work. Upon seeing me, he said, stony-faced, “You are reading God’s words again? Can’t you read them less?” Hearing this, I felt very perplexed: “I have believed in God for a long time, and he never opposed me. But why did he say such words today?”
The next evening, my daughter-in-law said to me, “Mom, a few days ago, your son showed me lots of negative information made up online by the Chinese Communist Party to frame The Church of Almighty God. Mom, is the God we believe in really the one true God?” Hearing her say this, I felt upset, thinking, “Never did I expect that my son would oppose my belief in God.” At this thought, I immediately came before God, praying, “O Almighty God! Now I feel very upset inside. May You quiet my heart. I know the negative information online is false. I’m sure that You are the true God, but I feel this environment around me is insurmountable. May You give me cleverness and wisdom, and guide me to experience this environment.” After praying, I remembered God’s words, “In every step of work that God does within people, externally it appears to be interactions between people as if born of human arrangements, or from human interference. But behind the scenes, every step of work, and everything that happens is a wager made by Satan before God, and requires people to stand firm in their testimony to God.” From God’s words, I understood this: The environment that I’m in appears on the outside to be my son obstructing me from believing in God, but, behind the scenes, it is Satan disrupting me to make me give up the true way. I can’t fall for its tricks. I should persist in believing in God and stand firm in my testimony to God. After understanding God’s will, I had the power to face the environment calmly.
Later I walked to my son with my daughter-in-law. Upon seeing me, my son quickly took out his cellphone and showed me the news about May 28 Zhaoyuan Murder Case, saying with anxiety, “This is reported by the news media, so how could it not be true?” Seeing that the CCP brought false charges against The Church of Almighty God, I was filled with righteous indignation, saying, “These are all rumors and absolutely go against fact! It is reported by the news media—but so what? The ‘Tiananmen Square self-immolation’ incident was also reported by the news media, but wasn’t it also fabricated by the CCP? When the court heard the May 28 Zhaoyuan Case, Zhang Fan said, ‘I never had contact with The Church of Almighty God because they are very secretive.’ Lyu Yingchun said, ‘What the state cracks down on is the Almighty God that Zhao Weishan believes in, not the Almighty God that we believe in.’ They themselves said they were not members of The Church of Almighty God, but the CCP insisted that they were. This is not in line with the fact at all. Anyone with a discerning eye can easily see that this is the CCP trying to frame The Church of Almighty God. Its purpose is to persecute against religious beliefs. Besides, the kingdom’s administrative decrees promulgated by Almighty God clearly stipulate, ‘Kin who are not of the faith (your children, your husband or wife, your sisters or your parents, and so on) should not be forced into the church. God’s household is not short of members, and there is no need to make up its numbers with people who have no use. All those who do not believe gladly must not be led into the church. This decree is directed at all people. In this matter, you should check, monitor and remind each other, and no one may violate it. Even when kin who are not of the faith do reluctantly enter the church, they must not be issued books or given a new name; such people are not of God’s household, and their entry into the church must be put a stop to by any means necessary.’ God’s words have clearly told us to preach the gospel based on the principle: ‘All those who do not believe gladly must not be led into the church.’ God’s disposition does not tolerate man’s offense, so all believers in God preach the gospel with a heart that fears God. However, it was reported that when Zhang Lidong and his gang preached the gospel to Ms. Wu, they asked her for her phone number, and even killed her just because of her refusal. The way they preached the gospel was not at all in accordance with God’s words or the principle of The Church of Almighty God in transmitting the gospel. So obviously, Zhang Lidong and his gang are not members of The Church of Almighty God. As we all know, the CCP resists God and has been using textbooks to teach people that there is no God in the world, so that people will believe in and worship it. Since Almighty God carried out His work of the last days in China, millions of people have accepted God’s gospel. And now Almighty God’s work of the last days has spread overseas to every country. Various websites have published the words of Almighty God, and more and more people begin to seek and investigate the true way. Facing such a situation, how can the CCP allow people to worship God instead of it? So in order to thoroughly prohibit The Church of Almighty God, it fabricated the May 28 Case, through which it wants to arrest God’s chosen people and tear down God’s work. This is the sinister intention of the CCP!”
The Truth Exposed Behind the May 28 Zhaoyuan Case
When I finished saying this, my son was left speechless and just nodded. Through this experience, my daughter-in-law gained some discernment of the rumors and went on investigating Almighty God’s work of the last days.
Pain is God’s blessing.
The case had closed, but upon thinking of Satan’s disruption, I couldn’t help but feel uneasy, because I didn’t know what would happen to me next. During a meeting, I recounted my condition to my brothers and sisters. Then Sister Zhao read a passage of God’s words to me, “Do not be discouraged, do not be weak, I will reveal to you. The road to the kingdom is not that smooth, nothing is that simple! You want blessings to come easy, right? Today everyone will have bitter trials to face, otherwise the loving heart you have for Me will not grow stronger and you will not have true love for Me. Even if it is just minor circumstances, everyone must get through them, it’s just that they differ to some degree. The circumstance is one of My blessings….” Then she fellowshipped with me, “From God’s words, we can see that the path of believing in God is not smooth and that we will face lots of temptations and disturbances of Satan. Your son persecuted you and obstructed you from believing in God because of the rumors of the CCP. From the outside, it is bad and makes you feel pained, but there is God’s will behind it. God’s permitting such circumstance to come upon us is to perfect us and give us His truth, so that we can see through the evil and despicable essence of Satan, and have a deeper appreciation of God’s salvation; meanwhile, in such circumstances, we rely on God and look up to Him more urgently, so that we can be closer to God and have more faith to follow Him. Peter also had experienced hundreds of trials and refinements before he was finally perfected by God.” From her fellowship, I understood God’s will. It was in such an environment that I drew near to God more often and relied on Him more urgently. Through the persecution of my son, I had some discernment of the CCP’s evil essence. It only allows people to follow evil paths and does not allow people to follow the true way, and thus it persecutes religious beliefs so crazily. At that moment, I developed a heart that hated the CCP and came to know that only God loves us the most and that only God can lead us onto the right path of life. This was indeed God’s blessing to me.
Who says we don’t want our families?
One night, when I returned home after work and passed by my son’s room, I heard him shouting at my daughter-in-law. At that time, I was shocked, thinking, “Something bad must have happened.” Then, I walked into his room and saw my daughter-in-law crying. Upon seeing me, my son said fiercely, “This is no way to live!” Then he walked to me and showed me a video on his cellphone, saying, “Have a careful look!” Then, I saw a girl in the video saying that after believing in Almighty God, her mother abandoned her home to preach the gospel. At that time, I realized that it was Satan again using rumors to deceive my son and make him oppose our faith in God. Then I prayed to God silently in my heart, “Dear Almighty God, Satan is unwilling to give up, and again uses my son to persecute us. I’m willing to entrust everything to You. May You grant me with the words I should speak, so that I can counterattack Satan’s schemes. Amen!” After prayer, I said to my son calmly, “Son, I have believed in Almighty God for a long time. Have I, in your eyes, become better or worse? Do I quarrel with your dad more or less frequently?” Hearing this, my son went silent for a moment, and my daughter-in-law said to him, “Mom indeed has become better.” Hearing her say this, my son said, “I admit that you’ve changed. You used to frequently quarrel with dad, but now you seldom do that. Our family has become more harmonious.” Then I continued, “Before I have faith in God, I often quarreled with your dad over trifles, and wouldn’t stop until he obeyed me. Later from God’s words, I understood that such behaviors were the manifestations of arrogance and megalomania, which were despised by God. So I learned to put myself aside and deny myself when his actions were not to my liking, and now we are able to live together in harmony. Additionally, I’ve been looking after the kids, cooking and doing housework, haven’t I? However, the rumors say that we don’t want our families after believing in Almighty God; isn’t this distorting the truth and confounding black and white?” Hearing my words, they both nodded.
Then I continued, “Almighty God says: ‘As members of the human race and devout Christians, it is the responsibility and obligation of us all to offer up our mind and body for the fulfillment of God’s commission, for our entire being came from God, and it exists thanks to the sovereignty of God. If our minds and bodies are not for God’s commission and not for the righteous cause of mankind, then our souls will be unworthy of those who were martyred for God’s commission, much more unworthy of God, who has provided us with everything.’ It is God who created us humans and gave us breath. So as Christians, we should pay some effort to complete God’s commission; otherwise, we are too lacking in conscience and rationality. We have gained God’s salvation, and are willing to forsake our personal pleasures of the flesh to preach the gospel so that those who are still living in misery can be saved by God. This is the most righteous cause and is approved by God. Just as the Lord Jesus said, ‘And everyone that has forsaken houses, or brothers, or sisters, or father, or mother, or wife, or children, or lands, for my name’s sake, shall receive a hundred times, and shall inherit everlasting life’ (Matthew 19:29). So the statement online that we believers in Almighty God don’t want our families is not in line with God’s words at all. What’s more, is it true that the brothers and sisters of The Church of Almighty God don’t want their families? It is all because the CCP resists God and crazily arrests them that they daren’t return home and have their families destroyed. For fear of being arrested, many brothers and sisters pass their hometown but dare not return home. But now the CCP actually says it is us believers in Almighty God not wanting our families. This is really confounding black and white!” Hearing this, my son said nothing and no longer obstructed us from believing in God.
Having experienced these disturbances and battles, I truly felt it difficult for us Christians to follow God and walk the right way. If it hadn’t been for God’s guidance, if I hadn’t relied on God, I would have failed to stand firm. God’s words say, “God works, God cares for a person, looks upon a person, and Satan dogs His every step. Whoever God favors, Satan also watches, trailing along behind. If God wants this person, Satan would do everything in its power to obstruct God, using various evil ways to tempt, harass and wreck the work God does in order to achieve its hidden objective. What is its objective? It does not want God to have anyone; it wants all those that God wants, to occupy them, control them, to take charge of them so they worship it, so they commit evil acts alongside it. Is this not Satan’s sinister motive?” God becomes flesh in the last days and expresses His words to change and purify us, humans so that we can be gained by Him and enter the beautiful destination He bestows on us. However, unwilling to let us return to God, Satan has been disrupting and obstructing us, making up rumors and creating false cases to attack and frame The Church of Almighty God. It also deceives our families to persecute us and obstruct us from following God and walking the right way. Its sinister goal is to make us weak and fearful and give up our faith so that we will return under its domain and end up being ruined by God with it. Satan is really too despicable!
Actually, my son also believes in the existence of God. It was just because of Satan’s rumors that he opposed our faith in God. In order that he would not do things that resist God, I preached Almighty God’s gospel of the kingdom to him. Thank God for His guidance. Now my son sometimes reads Almighty God’s words.
Epilog
Thinking back to the way I’ve walked, I deeply know that it was God’s words that guided me to overcome Satan’s temptations and siege. Not only did I see the evil and despicableness of Satan, I also saw God’s almightiness and sovereignty, which made my faith to follow God more steadfast.
Thank God! All the glory be to God! Amen!
2 Major Reasons Why God Allowed Job to Suffer
By Li Zhi
Tumblr media
I believe that everyone knows well the story of Job. When his property was all taken away, his servants were murdered and his children had their lives taken, Job still revered God and shunned evil and didn’t sin with his tips. Moreover, he said a famous saying that cowed Satan, “Jehovah gave, and Jehovah has taken away; blessed be the name of Jehovah” (Job 1:21). No matter whether God gave or took away, Job praised God’s holy name and willingly obeyed in the presence of God, creating a beautiful and resounding testimony for God. But Satan was not yet convinced and it continued to attack Job, causing him to be covered in sores. Despite this, Job still didn’t abandon God.
The Bible records, “And he took him a potsherd to scrape himself with; and he sat down among the ashes. Then said his wife to him, Do you still retain your integrity? curse God, and die. But he said to her, You speak as one of the foolish women speaks. What? shall we receive good at the hand of God, and shall we not receive evil? In all this did not Job sin with his lips” (Job 2:8–10). The testimony of Job is worthy enough to be admired and emulated by the later generations. I really liked reading the Book of Job, which increased my faith, but there was one thing that I didn’t understand. God knew that Job had fear and reverence for Him and stayed away from evil, so why did God allow Satan to tempt Job and subject him to such great suffering? What is God’s will in this matter? Recently, through reading a book, I came to understand a little about God’s will …
First, God testing Job was to verify his reverence and obedience to God.
That book says, “And what did God do when Job was subjected to this torment? God observed, and watched, and awaited the outcome. As God observed and watched, how did He feel? He felt grief-stricken, of course. But, as a result of His grief, could He have regretted His permission to Satan to tempt Job? The answer is, No, He could not have. For He firmly believed that Job was perfect and upright, that he feared God and shunned evil. God had simply given Satan the opportunity to verify Job’s righteousness before God, and to reveal its own wickedness and contemptibility. It was, furthermore, an opportunity for Job to testify to his righteousness and to his fear of God and shunning of evil before the people of the world, Satan, and even those who follow God” (“God’s Work, God’s Disposition, and God Himself II”). After reading this passage, I understood that God allowing Satan to tempt Job was to test Job’s reverence and obedience to Him. After years of God’s work on Job, whether it be Job’s humanity, faith in God, knowledge of or reverence to God, they had all become perfect. At that time, God was going to test Job, and He used the service of Satan to subject him to trials. That gave Job an opportunity to testify to his reverence and obedience to God before Satan and all people. Through this, Satan was utterly convinced and acknowledged God’s words are the truth, and thereby it was humiliated and defeated. Meanwhile, that enables us humans to have discernment on the essence of Satan—not only wickedness and despicableness but also the utmost foolishness. Amid these two times of Satan’s attacks, Job bore resounding testimony, which proved that he was a man that feared God and shunned evil, and which particularly made Satan utterly convinced and not dare to tempt him any longer. In the end, Job escaped the bondage and constraints of Satan, lived in the light of God and gained true release and freedom. That was God’s blessing of Job.
Similarly, as we believe in God and follow Him, God will also put us into different tests based on our own statures. This means that we will encounter Satan’s temptations and through them we can verify whether we are true believers in God. Take me as an example. I, after believing in God for several years, already understood some truths through reading God’s words, and I was resolved to bear witness to God. But when unpleasant issues continuously happened at my home—my child was ill, my husband was injured at work, and then I got into a car accident—I felt weak inside and even complained, “I sincerely believe in God. Then why did these unfortunate things befall me?” Through praying and seeking guidance from God, I remembered the testimony of Job, and I suddenly saw the light. It turned out that these things I encountered were the battles of the spiritual world and that Satan’s temptations came upon me. Satan tried to use these environments to make me deny God and betray Him and achieve its aim of consuming me whole. Yet from God’s side, that was also God testing me to see if I had true confidence in God when facing unpleasant matters. At that time, I finally realized that my stature was really small, and that my faith in God was not true faith and couldn’t stand His test at all. When only something unpleasant happened to my family, I complained against God—there was no comparison with Job’s obedience and reverence to God. In the past, when nothing happened to me, I resolved before God that I was willing to obey His orchestration and arrangements and bear witness to Him. However, only through the revelation of these trials did I realize that that was not my real stature, and that I didn’t have any obedience or reverence to God. I still needed to keep working hard at pursuing the truth, diligently pray and draw near to God and read God’s words more. Only by taking God’s words as a weapon to battle with Satan could I overcome Satan’s temptations. Afterward, I relied on God and got through those gloomy days, and not until then did I truly comprehend God’s kind intentions. God arranging these situations to test me was His love and salvation of me. I truly saw my stature and deficiencies and was inspired to pursue the truth. Thank God for saving me!
Second, God testing Job was to allow man to know Satan’s wickedness and despicableness.
Tumblr media
The Bible records, “And Jehovah said to Satan, Have you considered My servant Job, that there is none like him in the earth, a perfect and an upright man, one that fears God, and eschews evil? Then Satan answered Jehovah, and said, Does Job fear God for nothing? Have not You made an hedge about him, and about his house, and about all that he has on every side? You have blessed the work of his hands, and his substance is increased in the land. But put forth Your hand now, and touch all that he has, and he will curse You to Your face” (Job 1:8–11). “And Satan answered Jehovah, and said, Skin for skin, yes, all that a man has will he give for his life. But put forth Your hand now, and touch his bone and his flesh, and he will curse You to Your face” (Job 2:4–5). And that book says, “Through these words, Satan completely lays bare the attitude toward God and the loathing of Job’s fear of God that it holds in its heart. When this happens, its maliciousness and evil nature are completely exposed. It loathes those who fear God, loathes those who shun evil, and even more so loathes Jehovah God for bestowing blessings on man. It wants to use this opportunity to destroy Job whom God raised with His own hand, to ruin him, saying: ‘You say Job fears You and shuns evil. I see it otherwise.’ It uses various ways to provoke and tempt Jehovah God, and uses various ways so that Jehovah God hands Job over to Satan to be wantonly manipulated, harmed and handled. It wants to take advantage of this opportunity to exterminate this man who is righteous and perfect in God’s eyes. Is its having this kind of heart a momentary impulse? No, it is not. It has been long in the making. God works, God cares for a person, looks upon a person, and Satan dogs His every step. Whoever God favors, Satan also watches, trailing along behind. If God wants this person, Satan would do everything in its power to obstruct God, using various evil ways to tempt, harass and wreck the work God does in order to achieve its hidden objective. What is its objective? It does not want God to have anyone; it wants all those that God wants, to occupy them, control them, to take charge of them so they worship it, so they commit evil acts alongside it. Is this not Satan’s sinister motive? Normally, you often say that Satan is so evil, so bad, but have you seen it? You can only see how bad man is and have not seen in reality how bad Satan actually is. But have you seen it in this issue concerning Job? (Yes.) This issue has made Satan’s hideous countenance and its essence very clear. Satan is at war with God, trailing along behind Him. Its objective is to demolish all the work God wants to do, to occupy and control those whom God wants, to completely extinguish those whom God wants. If they are not extinguished, then they come to Satan’s possession to be used by it—this is its objective.” From the means that Satan adopted to tempt Job, we can see that each time when it abused him, Satan grew more and more wicked and contemptible. First, in just one night, Satan made Job lose a mountainside of livestock, all of his immense wealth and all of his children. Yet despite this, Job still didn’t abandon God. But Satan was unwilling to give up, and began a second round of attacks upon Job. It put forth its hand to harm his bones, had his body covered with sores and used his wife and friends to attack and judge him. We can see from these facts that Satan is so evil and despicable. It doesn’t allow man to love and follow God. It uses various means to attack and afflict those who sincerely follow God, and looks for opportunities to thoroughly destroy our faith in God and reverence for Him, so that we will wallow in the mire with it and follow it in alienating and betraying God. This way, it will be able to completely control and toy with us in the palm of its hand, making us betray God along with it and ultimately be punished and destroyed by God.
These facts about Satan’s harming Job allow us to see through Satan’s tricks and intentions, so that we will be able to forsake and betray it and won’t fall for its schemes. For example, when many brothers and sisters were enthusiastically expending for God after first starting their belief in God, misfortunes unexpectedly befell their families. At that time, the unbelievers around them sneered, “Since you believe in the true God, why does your family meet with bad things? Look, we don’t believe in God but have better luck than you.” Then we developed doubts of God, “Right, why do we believers suffer disasters?” Besides, when some brothers and sisters who spent for God were arrested and imprisoned by the CCP government, the evil police mocked them by saying, “Why don’t you let your God come save you?” Hearing this, we generated misunderstandings about God, “I’ve been spreading the gospel and expending for God. Why doesn’t God protect me?” … We had come across so many such temptations, but we never understood why these unfortunate things befell us, and thus we were filled with conceptions and misunderstandings about God in our hearts. All this is caused because we lack true faith in God and knowledge of Him and are unable to see through Satan’s cunning schemes. Now, it seems that all the situations that we encounter are the battles of the spiritual world, just like Satan accusing Job. Satan tries to use its evil and despicable way, through many unfortunate things, to make us develop misunderstandings of and barriers to God and even betray Him, so that we will return under the domain of Satan and continue to be controlled and afflicted by it. That shows us Satan’s treachery and evil. God allowed Satan to tempt Job, and also allows it to tempt us, with the aim of letting us have discernment about Satan’s wickedness. In so doing, no matter how Satan tempts us in the future, we will be unlikely to blame or betray God, and will be able to stand witness and follow Him resolutely.
Thank God! Through this period of reading the Book of Job and pondering why God allowed Satan to tempt Job, I’ve known that the disaster Job was faced with was a battle in the spiritual realm. Therefore, if I am tempted by Satan in the future, I’ll be able to see through its schemes and understand God’s kind intentions, and have resolve to stand firm in my testimony to God and put Satan to shame.
The Acts of the Apostles, pp. 57-69: Chapter (6) At the Temple Gate
This chapter is based on Acts 3; Acts 4:1-31.
The disciples of Christ had a deep sense of their own inefficiency, and with humiliation and prayer they joined their weakness to His strength, their ignorance to His wisdom, their unworthiness to His righteousness, their poverty to His exhaustless wealth. Thus strengthened and equipped, they hesitated not to press forward in the service of the Master.
A short time after the descent of the Holy Spirit, and immediately after a season of earnest prayer, Peter and John, going up to the temple to worship, saw at the gate Beautiful a cripple, forty years of age, whose life, from his birth, had been one of pain and infirmity. This unfortunate man had long desired to see Jesus, that he might be healed; but he was almost helpless, and was far removed from the scene of the great Physician's labors. His pleadings at last induced some friends to bear him to the gate of the temple, but upon arriving there, he found that the One upon whom his hopes were centered, had been put to a cruel death.
His disappointment excited the sympathy of those who knew for how long he had eagerly hoped to be healed by Jesus, and daily they brought him to the temple, in order that passers-by might be induced by pity to give him a trifle to relieve his wants. As Peter and John passed, he asked an alms from them. The disciples regarded him compassionately, and Peter said, “Look on us. And he gave heed unto them, expecting to receive something of them. Then Peter said, Silver and gold have I none.” As Peter thus declared his poverty, the countenance of the cripple fell; but it grew bright with hope as the apostle continued, “But such as I have give I thee: In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth rise up and walk.
“And he took him by the right hand, and lifted him up: and immediately his feet and ankle-bones received strength. And he leaping up stood, and walked, and entered with them into the temple, walking, and leaping, and praising God. And all the people saw him walking and praising God: and they knew that it was he which sat for alms at the Beautiful Gate of the temple: and they were filled with wonder and amazement at that which had happened.”
“And as the lame man which was healed held Peter and John, all the people ran together unto them in the porch that is called Solomon's, greatly wondering.” They were astonished that the disciples could perform miracles similar to those performed by Jesus. Yet here was this man, for forty years a helpless cripple, now rejoicing in the full use of his limbs, free from pain, and happy in believing in Jesus.
When the disciples saw the amazement of the people, Peter asked, “Why marvel ye at this? or why look ye so earnestly on us, as though by our own power or holiness we had made this man to walk?” He assured them that the cure had been wrought in the name and through the merits of Jesus of Nazareth, whom God had raised from the dead. “His name through faith in His name,” the apostle declared, “hath made this man strong, whom ye see and know: yea, the faith which is by Him hath given him this perfect soundness in the presence of you all.”
The apostles spoke plainly of the great sin of the Jews in rejecting and putting to death the Prince of life; but they were careful not to drive their hearers to despair. “Ye denied the Holy One and the Just,” Peter said, “and desired a murderer to be granted unto you; and killed the Prince of life, whom God hath raised from the dead; whereof we are witnesses.” “And now, brethren, I wot that through ignorance ye did it, as did also your rulers. But those things, which God before had showed by the mouth of all His prophets, that Christ should suffer, He hath so fulfilled.” He declared that the Holy Spirit was calling upon them to repent and be converted, and assured them that there was no hope of salvation except through the mercy of the One whom they had crucified. Only through faith in Him could their sins be forgiven.
“Repent ye therefore, and be converted,” he cried, “that your sins may be blotted out, when the times of refreshing shall come from the presence of the Lord.”
“Ye are the children of the prophets, and of the covenant which God made with our fathers, saying unto Abraham, And in thy seed shall all the kindreds of the earth be blessed. Unto you first God, having raised up His Son Jesus, sent Him to bless you, in turning away every one of you from his iniquities.”
Thus the disciples preached the resurrection of Christ. Many among those who listened were waiting for this testimony, and when they heard it they believed. It brought to their minds the words that Christ had spoken, and they took their stand in the ranks of those who accepted the gospel. The seed that the Saviour had sown sprang up and bore fruit.
While the disciples were speaking to the people, “the priests, and the captain of the temple, and the Sadducees, came upon them, being grieved that they taught the people, and preached through Jesus the resurrection from the dead.”
After Christ's resurrection the priests had spread far and near the lying report that His body had been stolen by the disciples while the Roman guard slept. It is not surprising that they were displeased when they hear Peter and John preaching the resurrection of the One they had murdered. The Sadducees especially were greatly aroused. They felt that their most cherished doctrine was in danger, and their reputation at stake.
Converts to the new faith were rapidly increasing, and both Pharisees and Sadducees agreed that if these new teachers were suffered to go unchecked, their own influence would be in greater danger than when Jesus was upon the earth. Accordingly, the captain of the temple, with the help of a number of Sadducees, arrested Peter and John, and put them in prison, as it was too late that day for them to be examined.
The enemies of the disciples could not but be convinced that Christ had risen from the dead. The evidence was too clear to be doubted. Nevertheless, they hardened their hearts, refusing to repent of the terrible deed they had committed in putting Jesus to death. Abundant evidence that the apostles were speaking and acting under divine inspiration had been given the Jewish rulers, but they firmly resisted the message of truth. Christ had not come in the manner that they expected, and though at times they had been convinced that He was the Son of God, yet they had stifled conviction, and crucified Him. In mercy God gave them still further evidence, and now another opportunity was granted them to turn to Him. He sent the disciples to tell them that they had killed the Prince of life, and in this terrible charge He gave them another call to repentance. But feeling secure in their own righteousness, the Jewish teachers refused to admit that the men charging them with crucifying Christ were speaking by the direction of the Holy Spirit.
Having committed themselves to a course of opposition to Christ, every act of resistance became to the priests an additional incentive to pursue the same course. Their obstinacy became more and more determined. It was not that they could not yield; they could, but would not. It was not alone because they were guilty and deserving of death, not alone because they had put to death the Son of God, that they were cut off from salvation; it was because they armed themselves with opposition to God. They persistently rejected light and stifled the convictions of the Spirit. The influence that controls the children of disobedience worked in them, leading them to abuse the men through whom God was working. The malignity of their rebellion was intensified by each successive act of resistance against God and the message He had given His servants to declare. Every day, in their refusal to repent, the Jewish leaders took up their rebellion afresh, preparing to reap that which they had sown.
The wrath of God is not declared against unrepentant sinners merely because of the sins they have committed, but because, when called to repent, they choose to continue in resistance, repeating the sins of the past in defiance of the light given them. If the Jewish leaders had submitted to the convicting power of the Holy Spirit, they would have been pardoned; but they were determined not to yield. In the same way, the sinner, by continued resistance, places himself where the Holy Spirit cannot influence him.
On the day following the healing of the cripple, Annas and Caiaphas, with the other dignitaries of the temple, met together for the trial, and the prisoners were brought before them. In that very room and before some of those very men, Peter had shamefully denied his Lord. This came distinctly to his mind as he appeared for his own trial. He now had an opportunity of redeeming his cowardice.
Those present who remembered the part that Peter had acted at the trial of his Master, flattered themselves that he could now be intimidated by the threat of imprisonment and death. But the Peter who denied Christ in the hour of His greatest need was impulsive and self-confident, differing widely from the Peter who was brought before the Sanhedrin for examination. Since his fall he had been converted. He was no longer proud and boastful, but modest and self-distrustful. He was filled with the Holy Spirit, and by the help of this power he was resolved to remove the stain of his apostasy by honoring the name he had once disowned.
Hitherto the priests had avoided mentioning the crucifixion or the resurrection of Jesus. But now, in fulfillment of their purpose, they were forced to inquire of the accused how the cure of the impotent man had been accomplished. “By what power, or by what name, have ye done this?” they asked.
With holy boldness and in the power of the Spirit Peter fearlessly declared: “Be it known unto you all, and to all the people of Israel, that by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom ye crucified, whom God raised from the dead, even by Him doth this man stand here before you whole. This is the stone which was set at nought of you builders, which is become the head of the corner. Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.”
This courageous defense appalled the Jewish leaders. They had supposed that the disciples would be overcome with fear and confusion when brought before the Sanhedrin. But, instead, these witnesses spoke as Christ had spoken, with a convincing power that silenced their adversaries. There was no trace of fear in Peter's voice as he declared of Christ, “This is the stone which was set at nought of you builders, which is become the head of the corner.”
Peter here used a figure of speech familiar to the priests. The prophets had spoken of the rejected stone; and Christ Himself, speaking on one occasion to the priests and elders, said: “Did ye never read in the Scriptures, The stone which the builders rejected, the same is become the head of the corner: this is the Lord's doing, and it is marvelous in our eyes? Therefore say I unto you, The kingdom of God shall be taken from you, and given to a nation bringing forth the fruits thereof. And whosoever shall fall on this stone shall be broken: but on whomsoever it shall fall, it will grind him to powder.” Matthew 21:42-44.
As the priests listened to the apostles’ fearless words, “they took knowledge of them, that they had been with Jesus.”
Of the disciples after the transfiguration of Christ it is written that at the close of that wonderful scene “they saw no man, save Jesus only.” Matthew 17:8. “Jesus only”—in these words is contained the secret of the life and power that marked the history of the early church. When the disciples first heard the words of Christ, they felt their need of Him. They sought, they found, they followed Him. They were with Him in the temple, at the table, on the mountainside, in the field. They were as pupils with a teacher, daily receiving from Him lessons of eternal truth.
After the Saviour's ascension, the sense of the divine presence, full of love and light, was still with them. It was a personal presence. Jesus, the Saviour, who had walked and talked and prayed with them, who had spoken hope and comfort to their hearts, had, while the message of peace was upon His lips, been taken from them into heaven. As the chariot of angels received Him, His words had come to them, “Lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end.” Matthew 28:20. He had ascended to heaven in the form of humanity. They knew that He was before the throne of God, their Friend and Saviour still; that His sympathies were unchanged; that He would forever be identified with suffering humanity. They knew that He was presenting before God the merit of His blood, showing His wounded hands and feet as a remembrance of the price He had paid for His redeemed ones; and this thought strengthened them to endure reproach for His sake. Their union with Him was stronger now than when He was with them in person. The light and love and power of an indwelling Christ shone out through them, so that men, beholding, marveled.
Christ placed His seal on the words that Peter spoke in His defense. Close beside the disciple, as a convincing witness, stood the man who had been so miraculously healed. The appearance of this man, a few hours before a helpless cripple, but now restored to soundness of health, added a weight of testimony to Peter's words. Priests and rulers were silent. They were unable to refute Peter's statement, but they were nonetheless determined to put a stop to the teaching of the disciples.
Christ's crowning miracle—the raising of Lazarus—had sealed the determination of the priests to rid the world of Jesus and His wonderful works, which were fast destroying their influence over the people. They had crucified Him; but here was a convincing proof that they had not put a stop to the working of miracles in His name, nor to the proclamation of the truth He taught. Already the healing of the cripple and the preaching of the apostles had filled Jerusalem with excitement.
In order to conceal their perplexity, the priests and rulers ordered the apostles to be taken away, that they might counsel among themselves. They all agreed that it would be useless to deny that the man had been healed. Gladly would they have covered up the miracle by falsehoods; but this was impossible, for it had been wrought in the full light of day, before a multitude of people, and had already come to the knowledge of thousands. They felt that the work of the disciples must be stopped or Jesus would gain many followers. Their own disgrace would follow, for they would be held guilty of the murder of the Son of God.
But notwithstanding their desire to destroy the disciples, the priests dared not do more than threaten them with the severest punishment if they continued to speak or to work in the name of Jesus. Calling them again before the Sanhedrin, they commanded them not to speak or teach in the name of Jesus. But Peter and John answered: “Whether it be right in the sight of God to hearken unto you more than unto God, judge ye. For we cannot but speak the things which we have seen and heard.”
Gladly would the priests have punished these men for their unswerving fidelity to their sacred calling, but they feared the people; “for all men glorified God for that which was done.” So, with repeated threats and injunctions, the apostles were set at liberty.
While Peter and John were prisoners, the other disciples, knowing the malignity of the Jews, had prayed unceasingly for their brethren, fearing that the cruelty shown to Christ might be repeated. As soon as the apostles were released, they sought the rest of the disciples and reported to them the result of the examination. Great was the joy of the believers. “They lifted up their voice to God with one accord, and said, Lord, Thou art God, which hast made heaven, and earth, and the sea, and all that in them is: who by the mouth of Thy servant David hast said, Why did the heathen rage, and the people imagine vain things? The kings of the earth stood up, and the rulers were gathered together against the Lord, and against His Christ. For of a truth against Thy Holy Child Jesus, whom Thou hast anointed, both Herod, and Pontius Pilate, with the Gentiles, and the people of Israel, were gathered together, for to do whatsoever Thy hand and Thy counsel determined before to be done.
“And now, Lord, behold their threatenings: and grant unto Thy servants, that with all boldness they may speak Thy word, by stretching forth Thine hand to heal; and that signs and wonders may be done by the name of Thy Holy Child Jesus.”
The disciples prayed that greater strength might be imparted to them in the work of the ministry; for they saw that they would meet the same determined opposition that Christ had encountered when upon the earth. While their united prayers were ascending in faith to heaven, the answer came. The place where they were assembled was shaken, and they were endowed anew with the Holy Spirit. Their hearts filled with courage, they again went forth to proclaim the word of God in Jerusalem. “With great power gave the apostles witness of the resurrection of the Lord Jesus,” and God marvelously blessed their efforts.
The principle for which the disciples stood so fearlessly when, in answer to the command not to speak any more in the name of Jesus, they declared, “Whether it be right in the sight of God to hearken unto you more than unto God, judge ye,” is the same that the adherents of the gospel struggled to maintain in the days of the Reformation. When in 1529 the German princes assembled at the Diet of Spires, there was presented the emperor's decree restricting religious liberty, and prohibiting all further dissemination of the reformed doctrines. It seemed that the hope of the world was about to be crushed out. Would the princes accept the decree? Should the light of the gospel be shut out from the multitudes still in darkness? Mighty issues for the world were at stake. Those who had accepted the reformed faith met together, and their unanimous decision was, “Let us reject this decree. In matters of conscience the majority has no power.”—Merle d'Aubigne, History of the Reformation, b. 13, ch. 5.
This principle we in our day are firmly to maintain. The banner of truth and religious liberty held aloft by the founders of the gospel church and by God's witnesses during the centuries that have passed since then, has, in this last conflict, been committed to our hands. The responsibility for this great gift rests with those whom God has blessed with a knowledge of His word. We are to receive this word as supreme authority. We are to recognize human government as an ordinance of divine appointment, and teach obedience to it as a sacred duty, within its legitimate sphere. But when its claims conflict with the claims of God, we must obey God rather than men. God's word must be recognized as above all human legislation. A “Thus saith the Lord” is not to be set aside for a “Thus saith the church” or a “Thus saith the state.” The crown of Christ is to be lifted above the diadems of earthly potentates.
We are not required to defy authorities. Our words, whether spoken or written, should be carefully considered, lest we place ourselves on record as uttering that which would make us appear antagonistic to law and order. We are not to say or do anything that would unnecessarily close up our way. We are to go forward in Christ's name, advocating the truths committed to us. If we are forbidden by men to do this work, then we may say, as did the apostles, “Whether it be right in the sight of God to hearken unto you more than unto God, judge ye. For we cannot but speak the things which we have seen and heard.”
Master P Seems High Key Annoyed With Monica After She Called Kim K About C-Murder’s Case, Implies Singer Is Only Around Due To Divorce + Monica Responds, C-Murder Rides For Her
  Master P and Monica are feuding on social media over who has C-Murder’s best interest at heart. All hell broke loose after Monica called up Kim K to help get her ex released from prison. P def felt a way about it and spoke out about it. And Monica made sure to respond. Get it all inside….
Everyone’s yelling #FreeCoreyMiller!
No one could have made us believe that Master P and Monica would be going at it via Instagram, yet, here we are. 2020 has def been a doozy and isn’t showing any signs of slowing up.
No Limit Honcho Master P and R&B songbird Monica both want the same thing. They both want rapper C-Murder – P’s brother & Monica’s ex-boyfriend – to be released from prison. They – along with a lot of other people – believe C-Murder (real name Corey Miller) was wrongfully convicted for murder and sentenced to life behind bars. However, they can’t seem to come together as an unified force to help get him out of prison.
If you didn’t know, C-Murder is currently sitting behind bars after he was arrested in 2002 for the death of 16-year-old Steve Thomas, who was shot to death in New Orleans. A jury voted 10-2 in favor of sentencing the rapper to life in prison.
Last week, Kim Kardashian West announced that she was teaming up with singer Monica, along with Jay-Z & Meek Mill’s REFORM Alliance, to get C-Murder out of prison.
C-Murder hopped on Instagram to thank Monica, Kim K (and the team that does the actual work) for using their platforms and resources to raise awareness about his case. He said Monica connected him with Kim K seven months ago and after their conversation, it was the first time he actually rested while behind bars.
So I published multiple books to help feed my kids & pay lawyers bare minimum! I am a man so it was no one’s responsibility to save me & no one attempted to! But when you trust God he will send his angels! This message is To any man or woman fighting the injustices of the system , DONT EVER GIVE UP!!! And do as I am. Focus on the Blessings, Not the Betrayals! #TruStory #FREECoreyMiller
                  IT'S BEEN A LONG JOURNEY FIGHTING FOR MY BROTHER COREY MILLER'S INNOCENCE AND I APPLAUD THE CELEBRITIES THAT ARE JOINING THE MOVEMENT. His case has recently received renewed interest due to the No Limit Chronicles. The key witness in the trial revealed that the police forced him to lie. The incident happened in 2002, although several witnesses have recanted their stories my brother has been denied a new trial after multiple times. An innocent man is still incarcerated. He was sentenced to life in prison at the Louisiana State Penitentiary even though there are no forensic evidence tying him to the homicide. #FreeCoreyMiller @silkktheshocker @romeomiller @snoopdogg @monicadenise @kimkardashian #Godisreal #GodGotTheLastSay
Master P got word about Monica and Kim K deciding to help get his younger brother out of prison, so he chopped it up with TMZ about it. He said he welcomed all the help he could get since he has been pouring in money almost two decades ago to get his brother released. Although, you can sense a mild undertone of shade…specifically about Monica stepping up after getting divorced from NBA player Shannon Brown.
Check it:
youtube
You can tell he definitely felt a way about it.
P also seemed disturbed that C-Murder would call Kim K one of his "angels." The music mogul put up a post about who the original angel was in C-Murder’s life:
                  I put my trust in God, this is my angel. The lady that put the house up for my brother the first time he went to jail. RIP Big Mama you will never be forgotten #FreeCoreyMiller We work so hard to change his name back to Corey Miller, then these fake people use Cmurder again. The system convinced him on his name and lyrics. The only way to get back in front of the board is to show change and growth. The truth always prevails. No weapon formed against us shall prosper, every lying tongue that rises against us, Father God You shall condemn.
In an IG TV clip (that has been deleted), Master P addressed his brother writing books about their family. He didn’t like how C-Murder made it seem like their mother and father wasn’t there for them and he didn’t like how his brother spoke bad about their family. He’s annoyed C-Murder spoke on their family, but never said anything negative about the people who allegedly helped put him in prison. P is frustrated with “ungrateful family members” and made sure to let it be known.
Peep the video he posted (then deleted) below:
In the caption, P wrote:
"There’s nothing more important to me than family And when a family member is incarcerated or hurt, the whole family is affected. But if you truly believe in God, you know that every man is accountable for their own actions. We also have family members that make poor decisions that result in painful consequences but put the blame on others to avoid taking responsibility themselves. It’s time for me to be truthful with my own family. None of us are perfect but we are not going to grow if we don’t face the truth with each other. We need to stop being afraid to speak up, tell the truth, confront and correct each other in love. Everything is not about money. I’m tired of family members looking at me like an ATM. The Bible says: “Owe no man nothing but to love him.” I have went above and beyond for all of my family members whether they deserve it or not and most of them are ungrateful. My brother is innocent. We have been fighting this case since 2002 and I know that he is frustrated. But he can’t continue to blame his family for his predicament when he has constantly put his trust in his friends. All his co-defendants aka friends, the ones that were in the club with him on the day of the incident, testified against Corey and stated that he was the one that committed the crime so that they could save themselves and get out of jail. He never said anything negative about those friends, wrote any songs about them, talked about them in interviews or wrote any books about them. But he did speak negatively against our family, even against his own mother and father. And WE STILL LOVE HIM and will CONTINUE to fight for him. Whoever wrote the Instagram post that the bloggers and the media are talking about, doesn’t even sound like my brother or something that he would say. And the only reason I am addressing this is because I will not allow him or his friends to make a mockery out of our family that has been dedicated, committed and continue to be here for him even when the fakers and publicity goes away. I’m tired of family members thinking I’m supposed to fix all of their problems. I’m not God. I love my brother and I’m praying for the best for him. God knows the Truth @cmurder @silkktheshocker @monicadenise @kimkardashian "
After that video, Master P posted a picture of himself with C-Murder and their brother Silkk the Shocker with a direct response to Monica. He basically blasted her for being “married twice” while his brother was doing time in prison. He feels like she’s only stepping up now because she’s divorced. Oop.
Peep the IG post he put up then deleted:
  The "So Gone" singer isn't one to hold her tongue, so she clapped back at P:
Master P must have saw the error in his ways and decided to apologize to the "Boy Is Mine" singer:
                  We’re doing too much positive to have to deal with the negative. I have no beef with @monicadenise She got caught up into some family drama that we have to fix and I am man enough to admit that. No family is perfect, we all go through turmoil but with God all things are possible. I love my brother and can’t wait till he get home. We can’t allow the devil to steal our joy. We are bigger than this! @silkktheshocker @cmurder #RIPBigMama
The privilege that is constantly displayed in our prison system is surely frustrating.  Black people can present every single piece of evidence and money to free an innocent prisoner, but all a white person like Kim Kardashian has to do is send a tweet and the powers that be act like she cured cancer and suddenly listen. The system is unfair, and it's frustrating.  And it's also unfair to credit white people who didn't do half the work with beig a savior, especially when they are not addressing or calling out the root of the problem - racism.  She could have amplified the work and voices of those already doing the work as well, so black people don't have to continue to rely on white saviors for the rest of our lives.
With all that said, hopefully the "beef" is squashed so they can put their energy into the same goal they both want: C-Murder's release!
