Clive’s horse was not like the other horses.

Other horses had brown fur or black fur or grey fur. They didn’t have wrinkled silvery skin with long strands of what seemed to be human hair. Clive lovingly combed, braided, and curled his horse’s hair every day.

Other horses whinnied and neighed and snorted and sneezed. They didn’t emit long shrieking metallic whines which occasionally stunned passing birds and shattered glass. Clive wore earplugs under his hat, and knew exactly what each pitch his horse whined at meant, from ‘I love you’ to ‘I’m hungry, can you feed me that bird I just stunned?’

Other horses ate apples and oats and carrots and crabgrass. Clive’s horse ate live animals it hunted down and shrieked to death, such as birds, coyotes, other horses, and cattle rustlers. Clive always acted surprised and excited when he found a dead animal in his boots, and gave his horse plenty of affection for the gift.

Other horses had four long legs with solid hooves at the end, and ran at a gallop. Clive’s horse had fout short stubby legs ending in cracked and broken hooves, and six long lithe tentacles which he used to swarm over the countryside. Clive had a blacksmith craft some tentacle-sheaths to protect his horse’s delicate feet from the hot desert sand and sharp stones they’d cross as they rangled their cattle.

Other horses were skittish around strange things, shying away from loud sounds or quick movement. Clive’s horse carefully studied every new thing it came across, from an old buddy of Clive’s to a lit stick of dynamite, in the same way - it extended a long needle-esque tongue, jabbed it deep into the new thing, then pulled it back to analyze the chemical makeup. Clive assured his buddies that ‘It won’t hurt a bit’ and ‘She’s just getting to know you’ and ‘She’ll let you know if you have any tumors!’

Other horses came from a stable or were bought off a stranger who needed to unload it in a hurry. Clive’s horse came from a cave deep in the Earth, in a chamber made of an unknown black metal harder than steel, carved with glowing words in a strange unknown language. Clive brought his horse back there every year on the day he found her, to sing her ‘Happy Birthday’.

Clive loved his horse, more than anything in the world. He talked to it late at night by the campfire, sang to it accompanied by his own badly-played guitar, tried to learn as much as he could about her to help with her unique needs. And though his friends didn’t understand how he could handle the thing, Clive didn’t mind them none. He was happy with his horse, and he knew his horse was happy with him. And that was all that mattered.
