History of Situational Mutism

have made a post on this before, so have taken some parts of that. but this is more comprehensive. aka long post like looong⚠️

summary:

aphasia voluntaria -> elective mutism (voluntary, refusal, oppositional) -> DSM IV = inability (failure, rather than refusal, to speak).

differential diagnoses: DSM-III = developmental disorders -> IV and IV-TR = speech abnormalities and social anxiety disorder -> DSM-V = communication disorders, social anxiety and psychotic disorders like schizophrenia and autism spectrum disorders.

2013 DSM-V changed it from Childhood disorder to anxiety disorder. it also removes reference to trauma as a possible cause.

DSM IV-TR said SM had slightly more females than males. DSM-V says SM has equal gender distribution.

People thought DSM-V would subsume SM into SAD, but it didn’t due to the uncertainty around the relationship between SM and SAD.

It has since been recognised unofficially as ‘situational’. but this is not enough because ‘mutism’ also ignores how SM can affect all communication.

“It was back in 1877 that a German physician called Adolph Kussmaul used the term ‘aphasia voluntaria’ to describe children who ‘refused’ to speak though they could speak normally. Kussmaul used the term after he reported three clinical cases with similar symptoms (Jainer, Quasim, & Davis, 2001). In 1934, a child psychologist from Switzerland called Mortis Tramer used the term ‘elective mutism’ for the first time to describe ‘a fascinating group of children, whose talking is confined to familiar situations’ (Kolvin, Trowell, Le Couteur, Baharaki, & Morgan, 1997). Going by both the terms, it can be seen that the understanding was of a voluntary act of refusing to speak, which would mean it was an oppositional behavior (Noelle, 2017).

The same understanding is reflected in the diagnostic criteria given by the earlier versions of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM). The third editions of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM-III and DSM-III-R) explained elective mutism in terms of ‘refusal to speak’. This was changed in the fourth edition of DSM, where it was recognized as an inability to speak (Noelle, 2107). The diagnostic criteria given in DSM-III (APA, 1980) talks of ‘continuous refusal to speak in almost all social settings’, while the diagnostic criteria given in DSM-III-R (APA, 1987) updated it to ‘persistent refusal to speak in one or more social settings’. In contrast, after the publication of DSM-IV in 1994, the diagnostic criterion read ‘failure to speak in specific social situations’.

There are other differences between the elective mutism as described in the third editions (DSM-III and DSM-III-R) of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manuals (APA, 1980, 1987) and the selective mutism as described in the subsequent editions, i.e., DSM-IV (APA, 1994), DSM-IV-TR (APA, 2000) and DSM 5 (APA, 2013). Some instances would be the predisposing factors and differential diagnosis.

According to both the third editions of the DSM (APA, 1980; 1987), maternal overprotection, speech disorders, mental retardation and trauma were possible predisposing factors for the onset of selective mutism. These factors were, however, removed in the subsequent editions of the DSM (DSM-IV, DSM-IV-TR & DSM-5). Similarly, the third editions stated that the ‘refusal’ to speak could be differentially diagnosed as developmental disorders, while the later editions (DSM-IV & DSM-IV-TR) list speech abnormalities and social anxiety disorder as differential diagnosis for selective mutism. in 2013 the DSM-5 moved SM from the childhood disorders category to the anxiety disorders category. The DSM-5 also drops the reference to trauma as a possible cause of SM, and indicates that SM has equal gender distribution, whereas the DSM-4-TR had indicated slightly more females than males.

People thought the DSM-5 would subsume SM into SAD, but this didn’t happen due to the uncertainty surrounding the relationship between the two disorders. (high comorbidity, some argue SM is an extreme version of SAD; some argue SAD causes SM; others argue vice versa).

maybe a better name is communication anxiety disorder or something like that. but then again, it is still not fully accepted as an anxiety disorder; only in official definitions.

I think MM is cooked, he’s 1 of 2 players to not outright deny his involvement and there’s also the damning picture of him in the hotel room

I'm rolling with the idea of innocent until proven guilty (the report comes out). There's a LOT of moving pieces and we won't know for sure what happened until we get the report - and even then, we don't know how accurate the report will be to what really happened.

Under the cut, I'll explain more. TW we're going to be talking about the 2018 WJC scandal in-depth, so if you're sensitive to sexual assault themes, please don't read forward.

I'm scheduling this post because I'm honestly a little terrified about this one, for (hopefully) obvious reasons. Sorry for the delay on this, in advance. God, fuck, shit, I know this is a bad idea, and I'm reasonably sure this is gonna get me cancelled (as much as a Tumblr account can be cancelled) lol... please be nice?

Before I get into the discussion, a disclaimer: I am not denying the 2018 WJC rape case. I fully believe that it happened. What happened is terrible and disgusting and should never be allowed to exist in professional hockey. I am analyzing one player (Michael/Mikey McLeod) and his possible involvement in said scandal.

Innocent Until Proven Guilty: A Stereanalysis.

Everyone charged with a penal offence has the right to be presumed innocent until proved guilty according to law in a public trial at which he has had all the guarantees necessary for his defence. - United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UN UDHR) Article 11 (look, international relations IS a useful major!)

Let's start off with the (very limited) facts of the case, from the lawsuit: At a gala in London, Ontario, celebrating the 2018 gold medal of the Canada World Junior's team, a woman (EM) meets a hockey player (Player 1). She becomes increasingly drunk and ends up going to Player 1's hotel room. They engage in sex (seemingly, at this point, consensual, though EM is intoxicated and possibly Player 1 is as well - the ethics of drunk sex are not my realm to parse out, and I will not be analyzing whether this specific instance is rape or not, as it is ultimately moot). Player 1 then invites his friends into the hotel room without EM's knowledge or consent. The number varies; in the lawsuit there are eight total players, but police say there are "reasonable grounds" for only five players. Important to note here is that most media says the lawsuit is against eight CHL players, among which 2018 WJC players are included. These five-to-eight players then proceed to sexually assault EM, intimidating her and blocking off exits. EM and her mother soon open a case with the local police on this issue. Player 1, upon being informed of this investigation by Hockey Canada, goes so far as to contact EM through Instagram and beseech her to "put an end to" the investigation.

Yikes.

We've got up to eight players (five that are going to be named in the report, it seems) that have raped EM. At least one of these, and likely several, but presumably not all, are members of the 2018 WJC roster. We will assume that all these facts are accurate.

On the picture: I can't find it anywhere. I'm looking. It doesn't help that seemingly ALL of Reddit is shut off with the API protests. Fire it my way, if you can. I've seen mentions of it in other places, so I will believe it exists, but I'd like to see it.

Mikey not saying anything doesn't mean he was or was not involved, in my opinion. It would be, frankly, stupid, to make comments on the investigation while it's pending. Remember how anything you say can and will be used against you? Exactly. Any legal advisor worth their salt would tell you to say as little as possible in front of the media.

Every other player on that team, barring (I think) Formenton and Batherson (both on the Sens), have denied they did anything. Formenton's contract wasn't re-inked and he's playing in Switzerland. Batherson was wearing an A when there was a recent injury on the Senators' roster. If we go Court of Public Opinion and claim Formenton is guilty and Batherson is innocent, we still have four-to-seven players' names to fill in. And it's entirely possible that none of those players were on the WJC roster.

Now, consider the NHL's position on this. They're just emerging from the wakes of the Kyle Beach scandal. Do they really need a second major sex scandal on their hands? Especially one at the hands of players and not staff? Would it not be easier to simply round up the players reasonably suspected to be part of the sexual assault and explain to them that yeah, you'll be taking a "personal" leave of absence or playing in Europe until this is resolved?

"But Stereax!" you say. "Cale Makar! Carter Hart! Those guys might be involved and they would be protected by the league because they're stars!" To this, I simply say: Mikey is not a star. As much as he plays a vital role on the Devils, he is far from a Jack Hughes-esque kind of player. I'm fairly certain they could Europe him with little or no real issues.

"But Stereax!" you say. "They did so little about Kyle Beach, even though Kane and Toews were publicly implicated! Nothing happened to them, and they're all but proven to have known and done nothing about it!" To this, I once again say: Mikey is not the face of a franchise. He is not a star. In the eyes of hockey, he is a replaceable 4C. You remove him from the team, you can put Shango or Boqvist in as the 4C and shuffle the third line accordingly.

Another thing to note is how, from the very limited information Mikey did give us, he stated that he was working with the authorities. If a person sexually assaulted someone else, and then ended up under an investigation, would that person willingly work with the authorities? Would they go so far as to say that on record? I'm doubtful.

Even if the NHL was to take no action, I sincerely believe that the Devils' organization would have done something if they were aware that Mikey was involved in the scandal. Unlike some organizations in the league (coughcoughRangerswhocough), the Devils tend to do things with general respect for humans. Like Fitz, who took the time to sit down with Severson and basically tell him that we'd love to keep him but he's too expensive, then help engineer the sign-and-trade to Columbus, getting Sevo the extra contract year. From a team that outwardly had a gender equality night, it would seem antithetical to the organization's roots to knowingly shelter a rapist. Hell, why would they write a FEATURE PIECE on McLeod in the playoffs? That's just asking for trouble.

Speaking of the playoffs - the report is dragging on. It's been months since we were promised it. Devils fans had worried that the report, if it would be indicting Mikey, was being postponed until the Devils were out of the playoffs so as not to mess the team up in the middle of their run. The run's been over for a month now. The report still isn't out. That's perhaps a good sign, that the report wasn't being held just so Mikey could have his "last hurrah", so to speak.

Think now about Ben Johnson. When he was found guilty of rape, the Devils terminated his contract basically immediately. Johnson never played for the Devils, splitting time between the AHL and ECHL affiliates (Albany Devils & Adirondack Thunder). Even so, it was a hard-line and immediate stance from the organization in a league that keeps trying to get Mitchell Miller ice time.

Or Jake Virtanen - though he was found not guilty of sexual assault by court, his contract was bought out and then he hauled ass to EHC Visp in the Swiss NL, where he got in enough fights with his teammates that the team basically told their manager they'd walk if he stayed. Recall Virtanen was a 6th overall pick in the NHL, probably the best non-lockout-era player the NL had ever seen, and he was that unpopular and much of a jackass.

Contrast this with Mikey, who the entire team seems to love. Take the Desert Island interviews, where every player asked says they'd take Mikey or Nate (the Superbuddies) or both onto a desert island for entertainment. Or how Luke's first dinner with the Devils was with the Superbuddies, Jack, and Dawson. Or generally how Mikey (and Nate) seem to parent half the young'uns on the team. Is Jack "our parents raised us to believe in gay rights and support the queer community" Hughes going to knowingly associate with a rapist? Is the team, which Jack has outright said was excited and had no issues with pride night and were looking forward to supporting that - is this a team that would all stick by someone who's committed sexual assault? Hockey culture and all, but I'd hope the Devils would be better than that.

And here we get to the most intriguing part of Clouder's Defense, what I call the 7+1 Theory. There have been whispers of this in the media and among circles of those in the know. The 7+1 Theory, most simply, is: Eight players were in the room where it happened. Seven sexually assaulted EM. One walked in and out, "unaware" of what was going on. (How "unaware" is up for debate. Some sources say that Player 8 was unsure whether whatever was happening was consensual and just resolved to stay out of it.) If this is the case, was Player 8 Mikey? We have no way of knowing.

And that's the long and short of it - we don't know. And we won't know until the report is released. And even when the report is released, how much will it say? How accurate will it be?

Now, if Mikey IS indicted in the report, all of this speculation is moot. However, I wouldn't go so far as to assume he is involved until we get the report - there are significant factors playing in his favor, which I've outlined above. I'm sure there are more that I'm forgetting, but I've spent way too long on this post already...

When the names are named and the information is released, only then will I pass judgment. Until then, I'm going to stick with the UDHR and presume innocence, both for the sake of legal thought and for the sake of my own sanity.

Once again, please do not take ANY of this as me dismissing or belittling sexual assault in any way. What happened in that hotel room in Canada was horrific and should never be even implicitly approved of by the NHL. I hope this report comes out sooner rather than later and justice can finally be served.

Scavengers Part 3: The Seduction

“Are you sure about this? We could just stake out Rafe-” His words stopped as he saw you emerge from your bathroom, dressed from a grand contrast to what he was used to. The complete modesty you exercised through everyday sweaters had been exchanged for a dress that showed every part of your curves hidden beneath the usual thrifted cashmere. 

 “I’ve got one thing Rafe Cameron can’t say ‘no’ to…” With this, you produced a small bag concealing a signature white powder associated with the man in which you were referencing. 

“Where they hell did you get that?!” He asked, almost angrily, as you chuckled. 

“It’s just powdered sugar, Pope…But by the time he figures that out, I’ll have gotten what I want out of him…” Pope suddenly became nervous to your words, the arrogance usually spread across his face as a coping mechanism to how you actually made him nervous, now faltering as his eyes fought to remain on you. 

“What exactly IS your plan?”

“I’m going to seduce Rafe Cameron. Can’t be too hard…I mean…it’s Rafe…” You reminded him as Rafe had a reputation for many things. Part time dime bag dealer, trust fund baby, coke head, and a good time for just over an hour or so. But he was anything but complex, and you were grateful for it in this instance as it made your task that much easier. 

“So the question is…” As you spoke, his peripheral vision catching you turning towards the mirror to iron out the dress to perfection, your words would be muffled until a specific set would take his focus to you in shock. 

“Would YOU fuck me, Pope?” 

“What?!” He was on his feet, taken aback and immediately defensive, as you couldn’t help but smile. 

“I mean if even you’d fuck me then he doesn’t stand a chance against me.” The blush across his cheeks made your grin widen as he tried to shake off your request, but it had been too late. The ideas had already been formulated in his mind. Pulling that dress slowly to the floor. Adoring the skin beneath. Hearing you moan his name as he slipped his fingers-

“Pope?”

“Right.” He answered absent-midedly as you were completely unaware how your current ensemble affected him. Of course, you’d hoped, but were sure. 

“I’m going to go back to the library and get that next clue and meet you outside of the fraternity house in exactly an hour and a half…” He let out a deep exhale. “I don’t know about this…”

“Aww, are you worried about me?” He didn’t reject or accept this possibility. Instead, he would just reinstate his question again, just in a different array of words. 

“Rafe’s dangerous.”

“So am I, Pope.” You surprised him with your words, “Now will you help me?” You asked while offering the clasp of your necklace to him. He hesitated before moving behind you, your eyes catching his response on the reflection in front of you, as you saw how he fumbled before redirecting his focus. 

“The slightest sign of trouble-”

“I know…I know…”

“I still think you should let me-”

“He saw you there, Pope…He beat you…He isn’t expecting a girl to have a plan like this against him, he’s too much of a misogynist to think the opposite sex is even capable…So I am already ahead of him. But I’ll BE fine. But we are running out of time. They could have Kiara in Switzerland by now, so we have to go.” As you attempted to leave the room, he caught your arm. 

“I know it isn’t much, but I’ll feel better if you have it.” He offered pepper spray from his pocket. 

“You just walk around with this?”

“Since the library thing…yeah…” You slowly nodded in understanding before accepting it, some faux security in knowing you had a means of protection if it had come down to it. Which you prayed it wouldn’t…

“Be careful.”

“You too…” You would separate after this sweet parting, a moment’s glance held too long, before you were set on your prospective paths. 

It would take only ten minutes before you stood before the front of the Fraternity house, a party in full effect, as you were immediately ogled by peers who were too drunk or too ignorant to understand you had dressed up for the night as most believed you were a Freshman or even a transfer. But this could be used to your advantage. You used it to ask about Kiara, but found nobody was in the mood to discuss her or was none the wiser in genuine existence. 

“Why do you want to know about Kiara Carrera?” Rafe’s voice questioned at your back as your skin chilled for all the wrong reasons. As handsome as he was, he was equally as intimidating, and even more so frightful as you turned to face him. 

“I heard some girl went missing-”

“Well this is a party…and we don’t talk about things that don’t matter…so have a drink with me, I don’t think we’ve been introduced…” You breathed a sigh of relief as you realized he didn’t know you. He had the same belief you were new to campus, which allowed you to wrap him around your finger with nothing more than a few ‘accidental’ touches and a bend over the beer pong table as you would ‘unintentionally’ brush over the seam of his jeans. The acts of seduction were truly too easy. 

But you would wait until he was intoxicated enough to then ask about the reason you’d attended to begin with, but with the question of Kiara having already garnered his suspicion, you optioned for something else. 

“What do you know about that Pope guy?” You asked as he wrapped his arms around you from behind, taking you rather aggressively to him, as you allowed him to lead you towards his room. 

“That geek is always following around some other geek-”

“What?”

“Yeah, he used to be obsessed with that Kiara girl but then this other scholarship girl came to campus and he follows her around now…smart girl because she doesn’t give him the time of day…But I don’t want to talk about anyone but you…Us…” He suddenly pinned you against the wall as you turned away to the sudden rush of alcohol forced at your face by his breath. 

“More specifically this dress…and how it belongs on my floor…this pretty little neck in my hand…” His thumb teased the skin he spoke of as you shifted uncomfortably. 

“Isn’t this what you came here for…” As he spoke your name, you tightened, jaw clenched, “Think I’m stupid, don’t you? Think I don’t know you and your little geek friend are following me around? At least I’m gonna get something out of it…” You were pulled by your hair into the closest bedroom, the boom of music the floor beneath you having subjected any attempts for help to be made in vain. You were left to your own devices. And you would have to save yourself. 

“What IS the fascination with Kiara? Huh? She’s GONE. And if you aren’t careful, some random girl is gonna ask about YOU next year…”

“I know what you did, Rafe.” You bluffed as his brow raised. 

“Yeah, what did I do?”

“You kidnapped Kiara.” He scoffed before suddenly taking your neck in his hand and forcing you against the wall. 

“That little bitch was always asking for it. Wearing skirts short enough to-” You reached for the pepper spray held between your breasts as he would be quick to apprehend it. 

“REALLY? THIS?” He chuckled, tossing it across the room and a part of some pile of discarded clothes. 

“What else are you hiding in there?” He asked, forcing the strap of your dress to tear and reveal your bra to him. But you were quick to use your knee to his side, managing to knock him off kilter enough to move to the direction of the door. The success of the knob twisting in your hand would be a short lived feeling, however, as you were apprehended once again. 

“You little bitches never learn, do you? You’re nothing but disposable. Putting your nose in places it doesn’t belong. But you want to see her? You want me to take you to her? Don't’ worry, it isn’t far…But you’ll want something a bit warmer…let me help-” He tried for your dress again, only this time, a strong bite made to his arm would grant you that final freedom that had you barreling from the fraternity house, degrading titles spat as you left the front door, sending you colliding into Pope. It took him only a second to assess what happened before he was moving back in the direction you came. 

“No-”

“That asshole doesn’t get to get away with this shit! Not anymore!” 

“Please, just trust me!” You pleaded, pulling him away from the fraternity house and back to the direction of your own dorm, closing the door and ensuring your roommate was still away, as Pope took note of your well-being. 

“You’re bleeding-”

“I’m fine.” But he ignored you, leading his step into the bathroom as you began to dismantle your ensemble, or most importantly what was beneath. 

“What are you…” You were stripped down in only the bra, a workout headband used to hold your phone just beneath your breasts, concealed perfectly by the fabric that had kept it concealed. And for that, you would press play on the conversation up to when Pope questioned the blood on your lip. 

“You recorded? Why didn’t you say anything-”

“I told you there was one thing Rafe couldn’t resist…I meant gloating. But I didn’t tell you because I knew you’d try to stop me. Because I knew that even if you hate me, Pope, you’re still a good guy and wouldn’t let me put myself in that situation.”

“Well what good did that do?” He asked with a clenched jaw, looking away when remembering you were half undressed. 

“I got what we needed. Not only did he confess to being involved with Kiara, but he threatened to hurt ME, so either way, his daddy can’t protect him this time. But what about you? What did you find?” He paused. 

“Someone beat us to it…It was gone. Whatever IT was…” His eyes fluttered from you and to the opposite direction as you cocked a jaw. 

“Well then…I think it’s time we got even…For Kiara and all the other people they’ve intimidated and hurt…” You explained while pulling the phone to view. 

“You’re gonna blackmail Ward Cameron?”

“Don’t you think it’s time someone did? Someone made them accountable? Beyond their politics and protection. Because you and I both know they have the law wrapped around their fingers. Donations and fundraisers, the poster children of privilege…so THIS has to be on our own…”

“How would we even go about it?”

“Ever see those old eighties movies with the magazines and they cut out threatening letters? It’s untraceable…we’ll use gloves and-”

“You’ve really thought about this.”

“Ward has hurt a lot of people, Pope…a lot.” Your eyes drifted off to the side. “And he deserves this. Everyone but Sarah does…”

“What happened between you two?” He asked as you sighed. 

“Some stupid bonfire and a guy. It doesn't matter. It really doesn’t, he wasn't even worth it. But it was enough to make an enemy out of her…And believe it or not, I don’t want to hurt her…But Ward’s hurt so many people-not to mention Rafe…” 

“Yeah, about that…Sit down…”

“I’m fine-”

“Sit.” He ordered as you took a breath before sitting on the edge of your bed as he was quick to follow, first aid kit in hand, as he used the alcohol on the end of a fresh square of gauze to mend your scratch. 

“Rafe did say something about you.”

“I’m sure it was about how he cheated off of me or something-”

“Actually it was about Kiara…how you were obsessed with her.”

His jaw clenched. “I just tutored her. Organic chemistry and algebra III. She was...She doesn’t deserve any of this…” He shook off the idea before returning to the first aid kit, pulling a bandage from the bottom of the container. 

“Do you realize how stupid this is. We’re practically kids going up against-” He spoke again.

“My dad lost his job because of Ward, Pope. My entire family split apart because my dad found out something about him. He was embezzling money from his own company and my dad took it to the authorities and he got fired. Blacklisted…he…he couldn’t handle it…” Tears filled your eyes as Pope’s jaw clenched. 

“So I need this scholarship and this money so believe me when I tell you, I know the risk. I know what can happen. But I also can’t let him get away with this.” He smirked. 

“What?” you questioned as he looked away with a shake of his head. “What?!”

“You’re just…not what I expected…You’re…tolerable…” You pushed against his chest as he caught your hand, your eyes flashing down. But a surprising hand softly across your cheek, gliding to your hair, would bring your breath to a sporadic series of inhales and exhales. 

“Pope…”

“How many times are we gonna keep pulling away from each other? How many times…are we gonna pretend we don’t want this? We’re smart enough to know it’s only a matter of time-” You interrupted him with a kiss to his lips. 

Whether it was the recycled adrenaline from earlier or that of the fact you’d always wanted to act on this, it didn’t matter, you were unapologetic to your kiss. A single kiss that he would allow you to instigate and retreat from before offering one of his own. This continued for a time until you were pulled into a straddle over his lap. 

“I wanna kill Rafe for putting his fucking hands on you…For even a second…” He explained while pulling your dress from your waist and up over your head. Soft kisses littering across your skin, not deep enough for the desire you felt, but frequent enough to accommodate this. 

“Pope-” You were suddenly twisted beneath him. 

“You want me to stop, you say the word-” But instead, you led his hand between your legs, eyes locked to him once his returned from this descent the made to witness you positioned his fingers over your clothed sex. 

“Don’t stop. Please.” He grinned, his lips returning to yours before he pulled you closer to the edge of the bed. But where you expected him to quell his desire you felt in an impressive presentation at your thigh, you watched him lower to his knees. 

“Do you like when someone-”

The southeastern corner of what is now Pennsylvania was once home to entire towns of religious dissidents. All had been persecuted in Europe, and sought freedom in the colonies. There were clusters of Mennonites, Moravians, Lutherans, and various other German-Protestant sects, some obscure and eccentric. Residents of the Ephrata Cloister, for instance, practiced extreme calorie restriction, sleep deprivation, and celibacy. Another group followed the sixteenth-century teachings of Caspar Schwenckfeld von Ossig, a bearded, deaf ornithologist who split ways with Martin Luther over the meaning of the sacrament. These motley religious communities had significant theological differences, but shared a great deal as well — they were farmers who spoke German, prized religious tolerance, and practiced the same distinctive artform: fraktur.

Fraktur is named after the font — heavy, angular, old-timey — which is usually called “blackletter” in the United States. Fraktur was ubiquitous in eighteenth-century Germany, and it remained so long after other European countries switched to the more readable Roman. (Fraktur is now associated with the Nazis, who used it extensively in propaganda, going so far as to outfit government offices with Fraktur typewriters.) How did the name of a font become the name of an art form? Fraktur art existed at the edges of text, as a decorative accessory of writing. It embellished fraktur script. In Pennsylvania and beyond, baptismal records, land deeds, certificates of accomplishment, bookplates, birth registries, and sometimes valentines were lettered in German-language fraktur, and decorated with the hearts, vines, and tulips that came to be characteristic of fraktur art.

Fraktur has its origins in folk art traditions from Alsace, Switzerland, and the Rhineland, but in America it became more colorful, elaborate, and freehand, and far more apt to dominate the script it sought to embellish. The genre’s golden age was the period between 1790 and 1830 — a time when the American religious context was still strong, but the European influence less stultifying. The forms are highly stylized. Hearts, flowers, angels, and various birds are repeated over and over, to soothing effect. The palette favors bold primary colors, traditionally made of inks concocted from berries, iron oxide, and apple juice. The composition is orderly. The tidy leaves of the tidy vines are perfectly equidistant, and the flowers pared down to floral symbols. The goldfinch that appears in many fraktur images is drawn in such a specific way it’s still known by its German name: distelfink. Symmetry reigns, and when it doesn’t, the composition is otherwise balanced. One of the most common fraktur motifs is the “three-heart design” wherein a large heart is complemented by two smaller hearts on either side of its apex — in fraktur, even the most curvaceous of shapes assumes the rootedness of a square.

Fraktur scholars and aficionados can distinguish Ephrata Cloister fraktur from Schwenkfeld fraktur from Mennonite fraktur. They can also identify the work of certain artists by sight —whether by name, or, for those who left their work unsigned, by epithet: the Nine Hearts artist or the Stoney Creek artist. But to simply appreciate the form, no expertise is necessary. Fraktur is straightforward and earnest. There is no irony and no secret code. Its pleasures are the homey kind. To contemporary eyes, the imagery signals feminine domesticity, but it wasn’t always so. Nearly all fraktur artists were men, and the papers they embellished were civic and religious documents. It is true, however, that fraktur was designed for private, domestic pleasures. It was not an artform of display or exhibition, but of personal devotion. A Navigation System to Combat Bottlenecks in Medication Supply - Technology Org

A new model designed by ETH Zurich researchers measures how flexible medication distribution systems are in real time. It shows that supply shortages can be eased if pharmaceutical wholesalers coordinate their inventories and reroute scarce products as flexibly as possible along existing supply chains.

Supply bottlenecks for medications present major challenges to healthcare systems the world over. In Switzerland, for instance, just under 1,000 drugs that are covered by statutory health insurance are currently unobtainable.

Currently, the main strategy for tackling such bottlenecks has been diversification: if it looks like supplies of a particular drug will run low, wholesalers try to procure alternative products via other manufacturers and supply chains in the market. But all too often, this proves difficult because the shortage of raw materials for medications means no alternatives are available.

ETH researchers have now produced a study, published in the journal external pageScience Advancescall_made, that points out a different path. Even if multiple wholesalers are affected by a supply bottleneck for a particular drug, there is usually enough of that drug available within the overall medication distribution system.

As long as the wholesalers reroute scarce medications as flexibly as possible along existing supply chains, they can stave off and ease shortages. This calls for fully digital distribution systems that allow supervisory authorities and wholesalers to monitor inventories in real time and see the location of specific shipments.

“Flexible, digital supply chains lead to more efficient distribution of scarce goods. It’s a way of combatting supply shortages without necessarily having to increase production immediately,” says Frank Schweitzer, Professor of Systems Design at ETH Zurich.

Together with the scientists in his research group, he developed a model that measures the flexibility of drug distribution systems in real time with a view to ascertaining their resilience. This model can help supervisory authorities to detect supply shortages early on and to enhance the resilience of distribution systems.

Flexible supply chains

“You can picture the distribution network for a medication like a road network with various junctions,” says Luca Verginer, one of the study’s coauthors. Buyers like pharmacies and hospitals tend to be connected to manufacturers through several wholesalers, which store their stock at distribution centres. It would be possible for these distribution hubs to reroute medication shipments as well.

In this scenario, should there be a bottleneck in production or distribution, wholesalers can get a scarce medication or a suitable substitute to buyers via an alternative route – similar to when a car’s navigation system suggests a new route when there’s a traffic jam ahead.

This would lead to better distribution of idle stocks of scarce medications. Wholesalers also benefit from not having to go to the trouble of establishing new business relationships with additional manufacturers and distributors; they’re simply using existing supply chains more efficiently. Another important source of flexibility in the distribution system is that wholesalers have access to alternative products that have the same active ingredient as the medications that are in short supply.

Extensive opiate data from the US

To develop their model, the researchers examined the entire distribution system for opiates in the US for the years 2006 to 2014. The required logistics data was obtained from the US Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) and was released as part of a legal action against the drug company Purdue Pharma. This data contains details relating to more than 40 billion distribution routes between manufacturers, wholesalers and buyers. 

“This dataset offers an unprecedented overview of the nationwide distribution of a high-​demand drug which, over the observation period, was repeatedly in short supply,” Verginer says. The researchers used the data to assess how well different supply chains were able to maintain the flow of goods by tapping sources of alternatives in response to a bottleneck but still using existing distribution routes.

KPI for flexibility and resilience

The result of this assessment is a flexibility KPI that measures the potential of using alternative distribution routes to maintain supply of drugs. The higher the KPI value, the more adaptable and resilient a distribution system is in dealing with bottlenecks. For instance, the researchers’ analysis revealed that when the US distribution system for opiates displayed an extremely high level of flexibility, there were fewer supply shortages.

But the researchers also showed that flexibility comes at a cost: “Flexible supply chains tend to be less direct because they involve more intermediaries. This slows down distribution and drives up costs,” Schweitzer says. “There’s a conflict of objectives between a distribution system’s flexibility and resilience and its economic efficiency.” The ETH researchers’ new model can help supervisory authorities to better understand this conflict.   

Tool for supervisory authorities

Although the model was developed using data on opiate distribution in the US, Schweitzer stresses that it can also be applied to other distribution systems: “Our model would, for example, also work with the extensive product data collected by the European Medicines Verification Organisation and stored in the European Medicines Verification System.”

European supervisory authorities would then be able to better monitor supply chains for high-​demand medications in Europe, and intervene early on to boost these chains’ flexibility and resilience.

Managed to install Wii System Menu, News Channel, Homebrew Channel, and Priiloader in Dolphin

A chain of events led me to see the potential of what Dolphin was truly capable of:

Installing the Wii System Menu was the easiest part, far easier than on PCSX2. I just ran Tools → Perform Online System Update → Whichever region suits you best (Note that the region also determines available Forecast Channel countries to some extent).

With Options → Settings → Wii → Enable WiiConnect24 via WiiLink; then going to the Wii System Menu → Settings → WiiConnect24 → turn on. In Europe, the System Menu's default country is Switzerland, which should be changed in the System Menu settings to your preferred country. You'll be prompted with a long and somewhat silly TOS by Nintendo, which you can accept. Forecast Channel will now work.

News Channel doesn't work through this, however, with Error 107305; and at the time of writing, the Dolphin Wiki is blatantly lying that it works.

Only through https://github.com/riiconnect24/RiiConnect24-Patcher/releases does it have a chance to work. On Windows, it's not sufficient to just click on the .bat no matter what the Releases page says. Instead, open PowerShell, run "cd [whatever folder you saved it in, with single apostrophes if the folder path has spaces]", then run ".\RiiConnect24Patcher.bat". Running the resulting menu should go pretty easy.

The files generated by the menu can then be pasted into the folder(s) where Dolphin detects games from, then right-click on the game's row in Dolphin and choose "Install to the NAND". News Channel will now work.

Now comes the crown jewel: Get Wii System Menu to show disc banners for games from other regions. For instance, Mario Super Sluggers on a PAL System Menu, or Monster Hunter G on an NTSC-NA System Menu. This was a tough one for sure:

Since fail0verflow's official repo doesn't have meaningfully downloadable versions of Homebrew Channel, one has to go to https://github.com/FIX94/hbc/releases instead. Once it has been downloaded, paste it in the Dolphin game detection folder, where it can be launched directly and/or from Wii System Menu.

Once it has been confirmed that Homebrew Channel launches correctly, one needs to add Priiloader Installer and very likely also Launch Priiloader to Dolphin's emulated SD card; the standard Wii versions of both files will work. Dolphin didn't exactly make the process of adding files to the SD card easy, however:

Download ImDisk Manager from Sourceforge, then use Powershell once again, run "cd [the folder you unpacked it to]", then run ".\install.bat". Once installed correctly, the launch file is so hard to find that it's actually better to search for "ImDisk Virtual Disk Driver" in the Windows start menu.

It's likely best if Dolphin isn't running at this point. Run ImDisk Virtual Disk Driver → Mount new… → The exact filepath of the SD card that is used in "Dolphin → Options → Settings → SD Card Path:". Checking the "Removable Media" option in ImDisk is also said to be an advantage. At this point, the card will show up as a disk in Windows File Explorer, likely G:/ or something like that.

Extract Priiloader Installer and (if at all possible) Launch Priiloader into that disk. Then cut and paste the folders' "apps" folders onto the root (Top menu) of the disk. Don't worry about 2 folders having the same name, they will merge into each other.

In ImDisk, click on the disk and choose "Remove". Any complaints it claims about lacking rights are fake, and can be clicked OK on. If it complains about "Invalid filesize", click back and forth on the options of "Size of virtual disk" and then try "Remove" again.

Run Dolphin → Homebrew Channel, and see if Priiloader Installer and Launch Priiloader show up as launchable apps in Homebrew Channel. If yes, run Priiloader Installer.

There is one installation process across all Wii OSs, so don't worry about there being no specific Dolphin process. Once completed, the installer may hang on "Exiting…", but the emulator can safely be closed at this point.

To use Launch Priiloader, you have 2 options: 1) Launch Homebrew Channel → Launch Priiloader. 2) Rename the boot.dol from a LoadPriiloader folder to something descriptive, paste the .dol into the Dolphin game detection folder, and run it directly.

All the relevant options for Wii consoles (though not those exclusive to Wii U) will indeed show, including the good stuff like "Region Free EVERYTHING" and "Auto-Click A on Warning Message". If you want to, you can safely use the "System Menu" on top afterwards.

The result: Showtime!
