ive noticed that most male giants tend to grow very long beards. My father's friend, (though I've always called him uncle) said that he likes to keep his beard to keep track of how old he is, with hundreds of metal beads the size of a ceramic mug running down his whiskers. I havent seen many giants with similar beads, and I wonder if that's a broad cultural practice, or a quirk specific to him (he's an odd man). Beyond beads, I feel it's very rare to see a male giant with a shaved face.

I have heard of hair growth among old world giants being used as a calendar of sorts, and as far as I'm aware the beads tie into that concept, if you'll pardon the pun. Originally, such beads were used to keep track of years, or certain events within those years, an easy to read map of a whole life for any who understand the subtle patterns. It may be that your uncle is following this practise, or simply emulating it for reasons of personal grooming and decoration.

Beards are very useful things, in my opinion. They bring protection from the elements, reduced inhalation of particulates, and a good net to catch dropped food in. Besides which, shaving every day can be time consuming, and allowing it to grow is often easier.

I almost wish I had the capability to grow one too.
