The first proper trailer for Castlevania Nocturne dropping has reignited all the usual arguments about the validity of adaptations diverging from or even contradicting the source material, and whether the previous Castlevania cartoon’s deviations, even if valid, were good.
That’s not an argument with an objective answer, of course, and I won’t bore you with my own stance on it.
But I will say that it’s brought out some interesting takes on the original Rondo of Blood story, from both directions.
Fortunately, Rondo’s story content is really easily digestible. A video compiling every cutscene in the game is only fifteen minutes long! And mostly the only gameplay-narrative bit is when Shaft dies at the end of his boss fight and then two rooms later comes back as a ghost for another boss fight - that’s important to the sequel’s somewhat more robust story - and... well, you’re not going to miss that, I just explained it to you.
So you can go ahead and absorb it yourself. Let the truth will shield you from misleading, hyperbolic statements like “Rondo has no story worth preserving!” and “Rondo has a deep, complex story that shouldn’t be touched!”
Or possibly fuel your own hot takes, it’s none of my business.
edit: Oh, excuse me, the compilation is actually missing one cutscene

Random HC: Why Soma Doesn’t Keep Many Souls
((From an OOC perspective, Soma Cruz is a balancing nightmare. He can take control of any demon he defeats, so his power doesn’t have a hard cap. I limited him to a few souls though canonically, something always seems to happen to release them at the end of a game (with it seemingly being implied that his powers including, soul retention, are only active when he’s in danger).
Considering that my Soma breaks canon some by being an active demon hunter instead of just trying to stay out of super natural scuffles, it really wouldn’t take long for him to get a ridiculous amount of souls and, since he would be in constant danger, there would be no reason for his power to shut off. So why would he ever let them go and settle for the solid but small set I’ve given him?
I headcanon that Soma releases souls to keep himself from becoming too powerful. I mean think about it, he can only seem to use a sliver of the demons’ powers. When he defeats Gergoth, he cannot summon the whole half-rotten dinosaur that spews toxic gasses and fires lasers, but he can summon the laser. I bet that with Chaos supplementing his base power, he could summon Gergoth in its entirety and immediately turn it loose on the nearest city. Even souls that he has unhelpful duplicates of could be useful for their raw numbers.
The fewer (and less powerful) demon souls he holds onto, the fewer he can immediately summon if he turns evil. He’s buying humanity time if the worst were to happen by only holding onto the souls he absolutely needs.

Let’s get onto some of Dragan’s night creatures! I’m curious as to how he managed to tame them, or were they made by Isaac and Hector before falling under his jurisdiction?
Anyhow first we’ve got the Flea Man! This is a classic enemy of the games and wonderfully weird and corny, which is why I’m glad the animators included it!
Tumblr media
I have to feel bad for the Flea Men, they’re mostly a joke given their irrelevance to Trevor and Sypha. Then there’s that poor Flea Man who tries to rush ahead of everyone else into battle, only to get anticlimactically skewered for it... And the one that’s used as a meat shield against the holy water arrows! Despite being stronger and more versatile than vampires, it seems night creatures don’t get any authority nor respect among them; They really need to unionize!
Next we’ve got the trio of Dusty, Rusty, and Crusty! I love these crab brawler night creatures, and I wish we could’ve seen them return in the final battle; They’re a very unique and weird, yet fun design, especially with Rusty’s crab claws that function as arm switchblades! Love these lobster humanoids.

Spooder is a hilarious name and a fitting distortion of Spider, just like the creature itself! I love the acid blossoms it spits out through on its back, it’s so wonderfully video-gamey, and I’m grateful that the latter half of Castlevania seemed to embrace the colorful weirdness of the source material more!
Tumblr media
These monsters are called Mad Drivers, based on the Mad Divers from Lament of Innocence!
Tumblr media
I have to question the arbitrary name change... Maybe it’s because they don’t ‘dive’ into the ground unlike the games, instead driving the people of Danesti to Dracula’s castle? Perhaps the true Mad Diver of the show is that mummy that Trevor fights, whose abilities are much more in line with the game counterpart.
GERGOTH! I love Gergoth and he’s such a metal and gnarly, twisted design... Looking at the games, I feel like his face is less detailed in the show VS the source material, and thus less grisly for it- But otherwise this is a faithful recapturing!
Tumblr media
And I loved the show even giving some explanation and backstory to Gergoth’s open ribs, I love this type of subtle worldbuilding for even character designs, as the adaptation gradually connects further and further to the original!
Also from Lament of Innocence are the golems, one of which is named Fist- But I like to call them Koranot after Super Castlevania IV, since that’s a unique name and reminds me of the word coronet. Again, I appreciate the show going weirder and more outlandish with rock monsters, whose stone seems to be more of a carapace to an actual flesh and blood creature within.
Tumblr media
Finally we have the Armored Beast, from Order of Ecclesia! This one died so quickly and early in the penultimate episode that I forgot it even died at all, until I rewatched to see if it did.

There was a power outage, so naturally I blew through most of this game in one sitting. Highlights:
Rahab is actually much harder to beat without a weapon that arcs above you, since most of your attacks just won’t reach it while it’s submerged.
I am STILL fucked up about Gergoth even after all those years, so fighting her is more like putting her out of her misery, at this point.
Idunno how people even get through this game’s Clock Tower WITHOUT exploiting Buer’s soul to defend themselves from the Medusa Heads, but I know they’re more resilient people than I am.
I think this might be the first (?) time I’m replaying this game after getting into JJBA myself, so Zephyr, a clear Dio Expy, is much more fun as a boss now.
