You knew there’d be trouble when you felt the tides turn, the waves picking up and sound of splashing. “We need to go.” Uma says and grabs your hand pulling you along the sea bed before the barrier comes into view and you frown slightly curious as to what she was up to, you’d already searched that part of the barrier for a hole, your questions are answered when the barrier opens and Uma pulls you through with her.
Your eyes are wide as you free yourself from her grip and swim to the surface, “What the hell Uma?” You ask as she appears next to you, both of your treading water. “Why would you bring us back through the barrier?” You yell, an annoyed look on your face. “We have business.” Is all she says before she points at Mal, Evie, Jay and Carlos riding through the isle on motorcycles, “Why do you care what they’re up to? We’ve spent the last year not caring.” You huff, the waves crashing your face a little, the taste of salt on your lips. “I care what Mal’s up to. She’s the one who can get everyone off the island.” Uma says before she ducks under the waves and swims away to the step ladder hanging off the docks. “You coming or not?” She says as she pulls herself out the water.
You hesitate and contemplate the risks, you’d been away for a year and no doubt people would be hostile for your return, especially Mal and her crew, but you really did miss the isle, and especially the people on it. You sigh and swim to the ladder, pulling yourself out the water as Uma grabs your arm helping you.
“Well this is weird.” Uma starts walking and you follow her, the familiar smell of the isle filling your senses and a feeling of home consumes you. “I missed this place.” You mumble, with a slight smile on your face. “Me too.” Uma’s smile is wider than yours as you fall in to old habits and take shortcuts down to the chip shop.
“Wait,” you lightly grab Uma’s shoulder and she turns to you with her eyebrows raised, “Do we really want to just walk in? What if they’ve moved on.” You bite your lip and she chuckles sarcastically, “Don’t you worry, if they have, we’ll whip em into shape.” She smirks before sauntering through the saloon doors, you stop them before they hit you and sigh, walking through the doors and down the steps.
When you enter the shop it’s carnage, the crew is fighting and you can’t hear yourself think, your mouth falls open as Uma stops in front of you, crossing her arms over her chest, you stand by her side and you share a worried look.
Your heart stops when you see Harry walk out the kitchen Gil following behind, as Harry’s about to shout, Uma beats him too it. “So I’m gone for a year and it all goes to shit!” Heads turn dramatically to Uma as the crew stand shocked. “U-Uma?” Harry questions in disbelief, “That’s my name.” She smirks at him and steps down, the crew split down the middle allowing her a path to Harry and Gil, but she walks right past them and stands on the table. “I’m back, and it seems to me things have gotten out of control.” She grits her teeth a little and looks at you, Harry follows her line of sight and his eyes lock with yours, he smiles and ignores what Uma is saying and walks over to you, with you still stood on the steps you’re slightly taller than him giving him the advantage to wrap his arms around your waist and pick you up.
You giggle as he does and wrap your arms around his neck, “Hi.” You whisper and he squeezes you tighter, before pulling away and placing his hands on your cheeks, “You’re here.” You giggle a little, “Oh lover, did you miss me?” His hands still holding you tightly to him “Of course I did,” You look at his face and notice little changes, his eyes were so much bluer, his hair a little darker under his hat that even now he never wore straight, it was always at a crooked angle, his smile still as contagious as ever and his cheeks a little pinker.
“I missed you too.” You mumble, running a hand through his hair as you remove his hat, “You’re stupid if you think this wasn’t the worst year of my life.” You close your eyes as you smile at him, “I’m sorry I left you.” He shakes his head, “Don’t apologise, I know you had to.” He leans down and kisses you, something you’d been craving while you’d been in the depths of the ocean, the salt water had only made you long for him more because that’s what his lips taste like, a mixture of salt water and honey, you never knew why but after 4 years of being together, it never changed.
You pull away lightly resting your forehead on his, “Excuse me? If you’re both done.” Uma yells and you jump a little and look over Harry’s shoulder, Uma smiles before her face hardens, “Mal’s back with her crew and I want you all in on my plan. They’re here for something and I wanna know what. Why would they come back so soon after VK day?” The crew is quiet as they listen to Uma.
You slip through the pirates Harry’s hand in yours as you stand below Uma, “Harry, Gil, you follow them, find out where they are, distract them, mostly Evie, Jay and Carlos, me and Y/N will try and get Mal, we probably have a chance if she’s by herself.” Harry nods as does Gil who you smile at and he waves enthusiastically at you.
Uma dishes out the orders and Harry kisses your cheek before he is grabbing Gil and he’s out the door, Uma jumps down from the table and lands in front of you, startling you a little, “Nice to have him back?” She asks genuinely, until you lived in the ocean for a year, you’d never seen this side of Uma, the loving and caring one, you always saw the hard exterior of a leader and a captain, the one who never took no for an answer, but while you were together in the depths of the ocean, you knew Uma in a different way compared to everybody else and you liked having that advantage.
“Very much so.” You sigh looking around the shop, “Place hasn’t changed.” Uma laughs, “I’m glad,” She pats your shoulder, “It’s like we never left.” She walks past you and out the shop, you look around one more time before following her out.
“Think they’ll be at the arcade? If Celia’s with them, she’d go there.” Uma’s eyes light up, “Of course,” the realisation hits her and she changes direction cutting down an alley to the arcade and as you turn the corner you hear revving and the sound of fast footsteps as the boys zoom past you on motorbikes with Evie, Jay and Carlos hot on their tale. “There’s Mal. Now’s our chance.” Uma goes to walk but you put your arm across her body and stop her, “Let me, you follow out of sight. I want to know where they’re going and they might change their mind if they see you. Follow my lead.” She nods before slinking behind a metal bin as you exhale and slowly walk over to Mal.
“Well well, I guess you just couldn’t stay away could you?” You laugh and Mal and Celia turn around, Mal’s facial expression changes when she sees you. “Y/N?” She questions and you nod, “Obviously.” You scoff and she stands a little speechless, “What are you doing here Mal?” You cross your arms over your chest and a stern look is on your face. “I-I” she stutters and Celia rolls her eyes, “I’m Celia by the way,” she introduces herself and you raise your eyebrows at her, “We’re here for Hades ember.” Mal looks at her shocked, “Celia!” You smirk, “What do you want the ember for huh?”
Mal looks at you, before closing her eyes and placing her hands on her hips whilst shaking her head, “Hold on, I haven’t even asked what you’re doing here. How the hell did you get back onto the isle?” You shrug a little, “I have my ways.” You lean against the bin behind you, crossing your ankles, “Are you gonna answer my question or not?” you ask and Mal glares at you, “Not, why should I? You’re Uma’s sister, part of her crew, how do I know you’re not doing her dirty work?” You laugh, “Mal Uma’s gone, has been for a year now, I may have followed her into the ocean but I haven’t seen her in a year, she disappeared and I was alone.”
You almost see sympathy in Mal’s eyes but it vanishes before you recognise the emotion, “I still don’t trust you.” She comments and you roll your eyes, “Don’t trust me then, but I’m going to follow you so you might as well tell me why you want the ember.” You say as they start walking, Mal groaning as you follow behind the pair.
“I need the ember for a sleeping spell,” You furrow your eyebrows, “Sleeping spell? I haven’t seen one of those since your mother did it.” Mal rolls her eyes, “Yeah well ironically, it’s Audrey’s who’s cast the spell.” You laugh, although your memory of Auradon kids was short, you knew Aurdrey was sleeping beauty’s daughter. “That’s funny.” A chuckle slipping past your lips as you walk up to a cave, “This is Hades lair?” You question, you’d heard rumours about it but no one never dared to actually try and find it. “In you go.” Celia says and Mal walks in, “You too.” She then shoves you a little, your boots scuffing on the floor. “Hands off missy.” You turn to her and throw your hands in the air, “Sorry.” She sassily replies before walking ahead of you.
Your steps echoing loudly as you walk down deeper into the cave, and as you round a corner, Hades comes into view, asleep in a chair. Celia rolls her eyes and signals for Mal to go around the back, while she walks over and turns the record player off, you stand there, arms across your chest, a smirk on your face, knowing their plan wouldn’t succeed.
“What are you doing here?” Hades says with his eyes still closed and Celia grimaces and you roll your eyes. “I bought you some canned corn.” She chucks the tin at him and he looks at her, lowering his sun glasses before his eyes wander to you and his eyes widen before he grabs Mal’s hand as she tries to take the ember.
“You really aren’t good at sneaking up on someone.” He takes the ember from her grasp and she huffs, “Hi dad.” Your mouth falls open as does Celia’s, “Dad?” You mouth at her and she just looks as shocked as you. “I was just coming to see you actually.” Hades laughs and stands up, “Oh really?” Mal questions, Hades glances at you and you send a confused look his way, “Oh yes,” he stops his sentence and gulps, “Think it’s time we had a chat.” Mal scoffs sarcastically, “Oh and this chat isn’t because I’m going to be queen? Really a little too late.” Hades rolls his eyes, “Now Mal don’t be bitter. I’m sorry I wasn’t there for you and your sister.” He sits back in his chair, throwing his legs over the arm, “You abandoned me as a baby- wait what?” The confusion in Mal’s voice was evident, “Sister?” He nods, “Oh yeah, did mummy dearest never tell you about your half sister? Guess it never crossed her mind.” Mal stands in shock as Hades laughs, “Cat got your tongue?” He chuckles, “Suppose you want to know who it is.” He gets up, putting a finger in the air, “Let’s make this interesting, a little hint, they’re in this room.” You gasp and feel your heart beating faster. “Catch.” Hades chucks the ember at Mal.
“Tell me what you feel?” He stands face fo face with her and she glares at him, “I feel power, more power than ever.” He nods snatching the ember from her and chucking it at Celia, “What do you feel runt?” Celia frowns, “Power.” She says and Hades frowns and you release the breath you were holding, “No I’m just joking, I feel nothing.” She then chucks it to you and you feel the power radiate from the gem when you catch it, the essence seeping through your fingers tip and into your veins. “No.” You chuck the ember back to Hades, “You’re lying.” He rolls his eyes at you and groans, “The ember doesn’t lie.” He walks up the steps to you, stopping on the one just below you, “I don’t care, you’re not my father.” You say before you turn to leave, but he grabs your arm, “I am and I’m sorry, you should really talk to your mother.” You look up at the room, staring at anything that wasn’t him, “I can’t,” You say, your voice quiet, “If I do, everything changes.” Your eyes fall on Mal and you could almost feel the irony in the air, she was your sister as was Uma. “You listen to me,” He hands you the ember again and you stare at it gormlessly, “This will prove I’m not lying.” He clasps the ember shut in your hand and you look up at him again before leaving.
It was too much for you to process, if Hades was your father, it made Uma your half sister as well as Mal, but why didn’t your mother ever tell you, you knew that the relationship she had with your father was non existent which is why she deprived you of knowing who he was but you never thought it would be someone like Hades.
“Hey!” Mal yells and you glance over your shoulder but keep walking, “Hey,” she catches up and grabs your arm pulling you back harshly, “Give it to me.” She demands her hand outstretched expecting you to drop the ember into her palm. “Beg your pardon?” You say, your tone of voice was flat and unenthusiastic, “Come on, I need the ember, you have it. Just hand it over.” You pull your hand back, keeping it close to your body, “The last thing I’m going to do is give it you.” You turn away from Mal and walk out of the cave. You sigh deeply as you welcome the daylight, the isle was dark but that cave was darker. “I don’t trust you to save the world by yourself.” You sarcastically wave at her without looking back, continuing on your path to the chip shop.

Chapter 11
Sam’s POV
A soldier’s jaw came in contact with my knee as I brought it up to strike and he fell on his back. Quickly, I joined Sunny in cover before firing off at the soldiers guarding the outpost opposite of us. We were facing each other when we took cover again. I could see her dilated pupils shaking as we fought them off. “I’m runnin’ out! We need to move towards that outpost and steal us somethin’ good!” She shouted to me as bullets whizzed above us.
“I saw a Shoreline crate just behind those ruins! If you can get there, I’ll cover you!” I shouted back, standing up a moment to shoot back the soldiers. She nodded as we heard a grenade go off nearby, knocking us back into the barrier a bit. “Go now!” I shouted, standing up to fire off again as Sunny ran off. I noticed a red gas tank just posted up in a corner. ‘If I can aim just right…’ I thought with a smirk as I pulled the trigger. The next thing I knew, a handful of men were flying through the air, some of them on fire from the massive explosion. Just then, more of Nadine’s men arrived and I moved to a new cover position. I had run into Victor and Nathan, taking cover on either side behind a large boulder. I closed in and pressed my back against it, cocking my gun to make sure it hadn’t jammed.
“Where’s Sunny?!” Nathan yelled as a barrage of bullets flew by his side and he hopped out to fire a few bullets of his own, taking two or three lives as he did and returning to cover. Just as my little brother had talked her up, the most attractive sight came powering towards us in the clearing. Sunny appeared with the stock of a gargantuan RPG over her shoulder with a warhead on lock, ready to fire and taking aim at the bottom of the fort.
“COME ON, YOU SONSABITCHES!” She shouted like a war cry as she squeezed the trigger and the warhead flew off, creating a magnificent explosion as it collided with the earth. Another handful of mercenaries had gone down and she still had two more warheads to use.
“ALRIGHT, SUNNY!!!” I heard my brother cheer with an excited grin across his face. It was the first time this trip I had seen him genuinely smile.
“Take ‘em out, kid!” Victor shouted. I was absolutely speechless. She ducked behind a Shoreline truck briefly to put in another warhead and appeared again with an aggressive expression on her face, boldly going past our cover and shooting off towards a group on our left and then one on our right. When she was done with that, she tossed the useless stock to the ground, pulling out two pistols and going full Terminator on the remaining mercenaries with Nathan’s assistance from behind the boulder. Soon the fort was cleared and I watched as Sunny dropped to her knees, her head thrown back to catch her breath as she bathed in the light of the hot sun. She was an absolute vision. Luckily, I was running on too much adrenaline to get hard from what I had just witnessed because I was most certainly aroused. We came out from behind the boulder carefully, scanning the area to make sure there were no more men around. When we deemed the coast clear, we approached Sunny with multiple reactions. “Christ, kid!” Victor exclaimed, putting a hand on her shoulder. Nathan dropped to his knees and brought her in for a tight hug.
“I knew we were best friends for a reason! THAT WAS INSANE!!” He shouted with an amused laugh. Sunny just grinned as she laid in his arms.
“It was pretty damn cool, right?” She chuckled and I just stood there. I didn’t know what to say.
“Holy shit…” I finally managed to say, still not quite sure if it was all I could say. “Damn, girl.” I chuckled, still in shock and running my fingers through my damp hair.
“Y’know, it was oddly very satisfying. Ten outta ten- I’m definitely doin’ it again.” She said, grinning like a maniac and practically shaking with adrenaline. I laughed at how jacked up she was as I offered a hand to help her up. We grabbed each other’s forearms and I pulled her up with ease. She stood, looking up at me, her head barely reaching my chest. I could’ve kissed her right then and there had Nathan not called for me.
“Yeah?” I answered back lazily, lost in Sunny’s presence. She smiled at me, staring at me like I was the only person left in the world.
“This is ridiculous… Rafe and Nadine must have guys everywhere.” Victor mumbled.
“They could just blindly stumble onto the treasure…” Sunny said, still staring in my eyes. Could she have felt it, too? That strange feeling in the chest when we look at each other.
“Mmhmm…” I mumbled, just enamored by her every being.
“SAM!” I heard my brother shout again and I got irritated.
“WHAT, NATE?!” I shouted in annoyance, looking at him as he stood at the top of the half destroyed tower.
“There’s another bridge to take up ahead! It’ll put us back on the path!” He shouted and I groaned. It was unnecessary information; Stuff he could’ve told me once he was already grounded. But that wouldn’t be my little brother if it were otherwise.
“O-okay….” I said, waving him off as he descended down the zipline hanging by his grappling hook. Sunny looked down a moment before heading towards the fort to look for more ammunition and artillery; my eyes followed her every step. For just a second she looked back at me, and for that second I felt like I mattered. She looked obnoxiously attractive with the cigarette hanging loosely between her plump lips and the heavy machinery in her hands, the weight making the muscles in her arms more present. I watched as she carried weapons to the truck from the crates when Victor caught the look on my face pining after her. He made the face of a disapproving father as I lit up a cigarette and assisted Sunny, making myself useful. I could see him talking to Nate as soon as he hit the ground and they both looked my way. ‘Oh great…’ I thought, rolling my eyes. I wasn’t going to hear the end of it. It was only a matter of time before I’d receive “the Talk”.
After we loaded up the back of the 4x4 and strapped in the guns, we were off again to cross yet another rickety bridge; and this one didn’t seem as sturdy as the last. My little brother took his time driving across slowly but to no avail, the bridge cracked beneath the 4x4 and my heartbeat kicked hard when we fell a couple feet to the ground. Sunny screamed, grabbing onto me as we fell and the car landed with a loud thud and a few creaks. “Jesus! These pirates really need to work on their infrastructure!” Victor exclaimed.
“So now what?” Sunny managed to get out as she clutched her chest. The poor girl was going through a few things on this job and I felt bad. I let my hand run over her shoulder comfortingly for a moment as we watched Nathan hop out of the car to grab the winch. He wrapped it around the base of the two pillars still holding the bridge and latched it in place.
“Winch.” Nathan said simply as he headed back to the car. I cocked a brow in confusion before my brother put the car in reverse and we began to pull the pillars until they broke, dropping the other half of the bridge enough to turn it into a ramp. The winch zipped itself back to the car and my brother smirked as us. Sunny grinned and nodded her head. We pushed up the ramp and was put back on the path. After a few minutes of driving, Nathan spoke up. “Sully, just how well do you know Nadine?”
“Why?” Victor replied, not really knowing where he was going with his question.
“Well I was thinkin’ maybe you could contact her, convince her to call off her goons?” My brother suggested and the old man burst into laughter.
“Yeah right.” He said.
“What if we promised her a bigger cut than Rafe?” Nathan added.
“Nope. That’s not how she operates. Nadine’s more of a money-upfront kinda mercenary.” He told him.
“And Rafe’s got that in the bag…” Sunny grumbled, the face she made clearly exposing that she’d been thinking about her brief and uncomfortable time with him. I felt kinda bad that she had to go through that. As we pulled into another clearing, I stood up, noticing the mass of trucks zooming up the pathway.
“Look. It’s Shoreline.” I told them, pointing out the vehicles in the cliffs.
“Why are they so deep out here?” Sunny commented.
“And why are they getting awful close to that volcano?” Victor added. He took the words right out of my mouth. I began to panic. The end was in sight and Rafe was closer to it than we were at the moment.
“What if they’ve already got the treasure…” I asked worriedly.
“I don’t know. They seem lost. They’re scouring every inch of this place.” Nathan said. Sunny grabbed my hand as I sat down and squeezed it reassuringly.
“If they’d found the treasure already, they wouldn’t be so scattered like this. We’re gonna find it, okay?” She told me. She was too precious for this world. I took a deep sigh and nodded, running my fingers through my hair as the wind blew by.
“You think that old building up ahead is worth checkin’ out?” Victor asked. We all turned our heads to where he pointed.
“Couldn’t hurt.” Nathan said and headed for the hill. When we pulled up, there were a few Shoreliners hanging around the area. Five minutes tops, the four of us manage to stealth attack each man so we wouldn’t waste ammunition, clearing the site in no time. We came across a laptop next to a detonator sitting on top of the crates and Sunny managed to trace the wires to the building in front of us.
“They were gonna blow up that door. Natey…… can I do it… please?” She asked him cutely. He just chuckled.
“Go for it.” He grinned. Before the words could even leave his mouth, she was already pushing down on the handle, causing a massive dusty explosion before us. She made a silly but satisfied face and hopped off the platform to run into the doorway.
“Hey! Be careful runnin’ in there like that!” I shouted to her, now obviously concerned for her well being. I began to follow her and Victor when my brother put a strong hand on my chest to stop me. I looked down at his hand then back to him. He bore a rather serious expression. “What’s on your mind, little brother?” I sighed.
“I know we’ve all been pretty busy, but I’m not blind, Sam.” He told me. ‘Here we go…’ I thought, rolling my eyes.
“What are we talkin’ about here?”
“I’m talking about Sunny. That’s my best friend and she’s been through a lot in her life. I just wanna make sure that you’re not going to hurt her…” he said.
“Why would I hurt her?”
“The way you look at women nowadays, it’s bound to happen.”
“Ouch, Nathan… that one hurt.” I sighed and put my hands on my hips. I would never intentionally try to hurt her. I didn’t want that. But he was right. I was bound to hurt her eventually. But not right now. Right now, I only wanted her… “I’ll behave. And I will keep her safe, Nate. I will.” I promised him. He looked at me a moment before sighing.
“I’m trusting you, Sam.” He said and with that we headed towards the building. “I thought you didn’t like her anyway.”
I smirked, remembering that barely a week ago I didn’t trust her as far as I could throw her but things changed…
“I’m grown enough to admit when I’m wrong.” I said. “You were right to tell me I could trust her. Now that I’ve seen her in action.”
“See! She’s got your back. Trust.” He stressed.
“I guess that's my word of the day, huh?” I chuckled. Sunny and Victor exited the building as we approached. “Anything?” I ask.
“Nothin’. It was dynamite wasted.” Sunny pouted before heading off to the 4x4. We all piled in and began to follow the path again.
A few moments of silence had gone by and I could tell everyone was bored so I thought maybe I’d lighten the mood. “So a pirate walks into a bar…”
“Oh god. Here we go…” Victor groaned. Nathan rested his head in his hand as he drove. Sunny raised a brow at me with a small smile, clearly wanting to see where this was going.
“And he’s got this steering wheel stickin’ outta his crotch…” I continued. Sunny was already stifling a laugh.
“Alright…” Victor said, feeding into it.
“So the bartender goes, ‘Hey man, what’s with the wheel?’ And the pirate says to him, ‘Argh, it’s drivin’ me nuts!’” Ba doom tsss! I looked over at Sunny whose head was thrown, cackling. The two men in the front groaned.
“Don’t make me leave you out here.” Victor told me. I thought it was funny. So did Sunny. As long as she thought I was funny, that was all that mattered to me.
“Check it out, guys.” Nathan said as we turned off of a cliff and up a small hill. A tall tower stood before us. Bigger than the ones we’d already seen. We all got out and went to the platform. We were really high up.
“Holy shit, you could probably see all of King’s Bay from up here!” I exclaimed, taking in the view. Sunny pulled up beside me, shielding her eyes from the sun as she looked out.
“And look. There’s the city.” Victor said pointing in another direction.
“A city?! Did I hear the word ‘shopping’?” Sunny piped up. I shook my head.
“Hey Sunny? Wanna climb that with me?” Nathan asked as he examined the sturdiness of the tower. “It’s not a mountain but…”
“Let’s do this.” She said leaving my side to start climbing this tower rather quickly. I could hear her squeal from the height up above me when they reached the top. “There’s another tower just up the hill, boys!” She shouted to us below. I looked in the direction she pointed and she was right.
“Any sign of Shoreline?” Victor asks.
“Not that I can see! Hey Sam, if I jump right now would you catch me?” She asked goofily and my eyes widened.
“I’d try but I don’t know how well that’s gonna go from that high up!” I chuckled. She wouldn’t do it. As much as she climbed, heights we’re not her thing and I could already tell from the first time she needed to jump to me. But she seemed as if she was trying to get used to it now. I smiled as I lit myself a cigarette and took a moment to look out into the world, admiring nature at it’s finest as the pair climbed down from the tower. Sunny landed in front of me with an adorable little jump and shook her hands.
“Fuck I need a cigarette after that.” She said pulling out her packet stored in her fanny pack and lit one up, exhaling some smoke with a shiver and turning to look at the view along with me. “Look at that… it’s beautiful…” she leaned on the railing next to me and I smirked as I admired her for a moment.
“I know right. I keep thinkin’ I’m gonna wake up in solitary; like it was all a dream or something…” I said. She frowned. “No guilt trip or anything. It’s just amazing.”
“I’m so sorry you had to go through that, Sam. It wasn’t fair.” She said, kicking up dust with her boots and picking at her nails. She shook her head and looked out at the river valley, adjusting her sunglasses.
“No it wasn’t. But somebody had to take the fall.” I said jokingly. She wasn’t laughing.
“It just sucks that it had to be you…” She said solemnly.
“Yeah… But I’m here now. And that’s all that matters.” I said positively. “Let’s go find this thing, eh?” I tapped her on the shoulder and threw my cigarette off the cliff. She put out hers and followed me to the 4x4. Nathan and Victor soon followed and hopped in as well.
“How are you doin’ with all this, Sully?” Sunny asked.
“Hell, I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t enjoying myself.” He replied with a chuckle.
“Good! I’m glad to be here with all of you. Seriously. God knows what I’d be doin’ right now if Natey hadn’t called.” She said leaning back in her seat as my brother drove. I could see him smiling as we drove on a path cut through giant rocks. That’s when we arrived at another abandoned outpost. Nathan slowed his driving to make sure there weren’t any mercenaries around and I smiled for a change.
“Well it would appear that we’re the first ones here.” I grinned.
“I say we check the place out and keep it pushin’.” Sunny said, taking the words right out of my mouth as we drove through the outpost. That’s when we noticed a drawbridge. Just our luck, of course we had to go lower it ourselves. And by “ourselves”, I mean Nathan. Victor, Sunny, and I just stood by the 4x4 enjoying a smoke. The drawbridge was getting lower and lower when the three of us heard the sound of vehicles approaching. All of us threw our cigarettes away and waved our arms about.
“Nate, stop! It’s Shoreline!” I shouted to him as I grabbed Sunny’s hand and jumped across the moat with her, dragging her to take cover.
“Shit! The guns!” She swore in a panicky tone as we hid at the bottom of a stairway. “How are we supposed to get outta this?” She asked as what seemed like a fleet of mercenaries began taking posts across the site. Honestly, this time, I didn’t have an answer….

Robin x Reader: The Bird Tattoo~Part Three (Soulmate AU)
A/n: Sorry, my writing is horrible. OOC. I know next to nothing about police radios, so bear with me. Please.
Wally and Dick found themselves sitting in the living room with a police radio sitting beside them. It played quietly in the background, and they listened for any key words. Specifically the words speeding, motorcycle, failure to comply, high speed chase, etc.
“I can’t believe they’ve been chased by the cops,” Wally tugged at his hair in disbelief. “Like, what?!” He shoved another handful of popcorn in his mouth. The bowl was big and filled enough to feed at least three people, but it’s Wally.
“I’m not surprised.” Robin supported his chin with his hand as he rested on the arm of the couch. “Definitely something Mockingbird would get herself into. Reckless must be her middle name...” He trailed off; the odd feeling he was getting in his stomach was distracting.
Wally shifted in his seat and put down the bowl of popcorn with a serious look on his face. “You do realize that Artemis is involved, too, right? It’s not just M.” He was best friends with Robin, and almost always took his side in things, but he was on the fence at the moment. Wally strongly disagreed with Robin’s decision to clear your tablet- a very idiotic decision -and he had yet to find out why.
“Well, yeah, but,” Robin had difficulty finding an excuse. “Mockingbird’s the one driving! Artemis has no control over her!” It was very poor excuse with many holes.
“I’m pretty sure Artemis could get her to slow down if she genuinely wanted to. And she’s M’s best friend; plenty of control there, if that makes sense.” Wally reached over for his cup and took a long sip of pop through the straw. “Why did you wipe her tablet, anyway? You never said why.” finally, the question on everyone’s mind was out in the open.
This time, Robin was at a loss for words. If there was a reason, it was a stupid, childish one. So he went with honesty. “I...don’t know. I was just so annoyed with her, I needed some sort of payback. She’s annoyed me since the very start of this team.” His voice was a mix of defensive and irritated.
“And what did she do to earn your very obvious hatred?”
That sent him into a rant. “She broke into the Batcave to use the computer when ours was down without setting off any of the alarms I set up! Her powers are so aggravating and barely useful when we’re on missions!” Robin started motion with his hands. “And she knows my identity! She knows Batman’s identity! Almost everyone’s identity. But I’m not allowed to know her identity! I tried getting into her files to find out, but it takes me forever to get pass even one section of security.”
Wally was speechless, for once. He could easily poke holes in everything he just heard. He could turn Robin’s explanation into a slice of Swiss cheese. “Dude, her powers are insanely useful. When she said she can make any sound, she wasn’t exaggerating. Any sound at any volume. Cut her some slack.” He still didn’t know who’s side he was on. “But I can definitely see where you’re coming from on the whole identity thing. Really unfair to you, dude.”
Suddenly, the police radio emitted the words they were looking for.
“This is unit 227. I’ve got a speeding motorcycle in my sights; I am in pursuit. Going at 90 miles per hour and slowly accelerating. No license plate, and their helmets prevent me from identifying them.”
“Do you need back up, Officer Bronson?”
“Nope, I’ve got this one. Just looks like some teenagers going for a joy ride.”
“10-4,we’ll be on stand-by.”
Silence briefly entailed before the radio blared to life again.
“These speedsters are aren’t slowing down! At all! I need back-up!”
“10-4, what’s you’re 20?”
“I’m on route-”
Officer Bronson, the cop in question, stopped speaking.
“Bronson? Do you copy?”
“They disappeared.”
“What do you mean, ‘disappeared’!?”
“The motorcycle is gone! I went around the corner and poof, no more motorcycle! Not a single vehicle as far as I can see!”
“Again!?”
Wally started snickering, and then started full-on laughing. But he stopped when his drink came out of his nose. Then it was Robin’s turn to laugh. He didn’t want to admit it, but disappearing like that while on a motorcycle was kind of impressive.
Suddenly, the hangar doors opened and a black motorcycle zoomed inside almost immediately after, the engine roaring and the headlight(s?) lighting up the base. The tires screeched obnoxiously as you drifted into a parking position. Ironically, next to Robin’s. But your heart was pounding too hard and your adrenaline levels were too high to give a damn.
You and Artemis ripped off the helmets and basically sunk to the floor to sit for a moment. Artemis was shaking from the adrenaline rush while you were grinning like a fool. Wally and Robin jumped up to see what was going on, and they were surprised to see you two panting on the floor.
“I told you to slow down!” Artemis exclaimed with a weak glare. She had fun and she knew it.
You scoffed. “Bull! You said speed up!” It’s not like you were going to get caught.
“That was before I saw the cop car behind that rickety barn!”
“You never said slow down, I’d bet my life on it.”
Wally decided to chime in. “I could have gone faster, just to make it clear.” The situation was hilarious to him. Artemis and Mockingbird getting tailed by a cop? Funny. Arguing about who’s fault it was? Even better.
You and Artemis said in unison, “We aren’t talking about you!” No one said anything the following moment, but then you two burst into giggles. That was the fastest your motorcycle had ever gone, and you two were the lucky ones to be on it. The jokes you cracked, the girl-talk, and venting about Robin again made it one hell of a night.
Robin saw the scene unfold and it made him feel... weird. Like his stomach was going to burst, or he ate something bad. Nonetheless, he still glared at you and opted to scold you. “Sure, you had fun and all, good for you. But what if you got caught, huh? What would you do then?”
That definitely ruined the mood. All the smiles were gone, turned into frowns. “I would have called you, my knight in a black and yellow cape, to rescue us from a jail cell.” Sarcasm dripped from your words and you stood up. “We weren’t going to get caught. Who do you think we are?” Your footsteps echoed as you walked away, an angry aura replacing your exhilarated one.
“And if you crashed?” Robin asked, his voice quieter. The lack of bite to his words startled you. It was calmer, and... caring? He almost sounded sad. Maybe he was. You didn’t want to look into it.
It made you freeze in your tracks. Not only how he sounded, but what he asked. If you crashed, both you and Artemis would’ve died. Undoubtedly. For two human girls, there would be no chance at surviving a crash at such speed. You thought about being responsible for Artemis’ injuries or death from any sort of motorcycle crash, and that thought made your heart clench. Leaving the team, practically your family now, behind because of a stupid decision hurt you even worse.
You turned your head a little to look at Robin out of the corner of your eye. He was right. You were wrong. And if someone asked, you would be willing and mature enough to confirm it. You maintained eye contact with the Boy Wonder for a few more seconds, but then you turned and walked back to your room without giving an answer. They saw you take off your sunglasses and fold them back up, but not your face. Not a surprise.
Artemis and Wally stared at Robin in bewilderment.
“Oh my goodness,” Wally dramatically put a hand over his heart. “I guess you’re not as cold-hearted towards her as I thought!”
“Am not allowed to talk to her without being a jerk? It was just one time anyway, it doesn’t mean I like her.” Robin grunted and went back to the living room. “We’re staying here tonight, right?”
“That is the plan!” Wally called out to him before looking down at Artemis with a smirk. He held a hand out to her. “Need help getting up, babe?” His wink would have made the average teenage girl swoon, but Artemis was no average teenage girl. They were also the ones who used to hate each other, but they eventually started getting along. Wally was a flirt at heart, so she got plenty of that.
Artemis stared up at him for what seemed like hours before taking his hand, rolling her eyes. She almost yelped when he yanked her up and brought her close to his chest. Wally’s green eyes met hers, but she firmly pushed him away before anything else could happen.
Robin was positive that they were going to be soulmates, but what about his? Wanting to meet his soulmate was a natural thing, so of course he was excited, but he was absolutely clueless on who it could be, or where he would meet them. People usually are, but it bothered him to no end.
You were in the library of the cave, a quiet place that wasn’t used too often. But you had one of your laptops out and several notepads surrounded you. On the screen were The Doctor’s files, as well as your own. You were deep in your research, ignoring all of the painful memories that you desperately wanted to rebury. You placed your mask on the desk and reached up to rub your tired eyes. It wouldn’t be the first time you stayed up all night, and certainly not the last.
Wally was zonked out on one of the couches, the credits of a movie rolling through on the TV, while Robin shuffled around the halls. He couldn’t sleep, so a walk around the cave wouldn’t hurt. But he got curious when he saw light coming from the doorway to the library. Who would be up at this hour? Aside from him.
He poked his head in to see who was there, but he only heard the clacking of a keyboard and occasionally the scratching of a pencil on paper. Robin slowly stalked through the shelves and made his way to the back of the library.
You were sitting with your back facing him, deeply invested on the screen in front of you. Robin was amazed that you didn’t hear him and leaned closer to see what you were looking at, but to no avail. So he settled on trying to get a look at your face.
He saw the tip of your nose before he gave away his cover. The floorboard beneath him creaked and it got an insane reaction from you. Your hand thumped against the desk and some papers drifted to the floor as you tried to snatch up your domino mask.
The moment it was on, you whipped around, ready to attack any hostile being in the room. But it was just Robin. Although, to you, it might as well be a hostile. You visibly relaxed before getting back in your chair and grabbing a blank sheet of paper to write something else down.
“You’re up late.” Robin looked at his watch; it read 12:23 AM. Not late at all for the life of a hero, but you were all still exhausted teenagers. Wally was dead asleep on a couch, Artemis was at home getting some shut-eye, you weren’t sure if Conner slept often since Superman technically doesn’t need to, Megan was certainly getting her rest, and Kaldur was comfortably regaining energy from a hard-day’s work. It was only you and Robin, now.
“Same to you.” You mumbled. You weren’t keen on talking to him, so you didn’t plan on talking unless spoken to.
Robin really did feel horrible for deleting all your hard work, and your reaction to his question earlier that evening darkened his mood. And he didn’t know how to make it up to you, so he started with picking up your fallen papers.
The rustling of papers didn’t phase you, nor did him holding them out to you. You snatched them out of his hand and firmly put them back in their original place. You were still angry at him, but you aimed to keep your words civil. Your actions? Not so much.
Robin crossed his arms as he stared at the back of your head. “I could have gotten a paper cut, you know.” At this point, he was just trying to make small talk out of pure boredom.
“I’m sure you’d live...” You muttered again and hit the ‘enter’ button a little harder than necessary.
The next twenty minutes were spent on several attempts to get you to say more than one sentence at a time, but trying to get you in a conversation was more advanced, and Robin had yet to level up. If anything, he’s still at level zero.
Robin sighed, starting to get irritated. “Well, what are you doing?” His question was the straw that broke the camel’s back.
The loud slam of your fist hitting the desk made him jump. Just a little. “You want to know what I’m doing!?” You growled, quietly. It was still a library, in your eyes. “Since you deleted every single thing I had on my tablet, I have to start from square one! I have to go through stacks of police reports and investigations and closed cases!”
“Look, I’m sorry, alright? I didn’t know what you had on your tablet; I thought it was a just bunch of games you could easily re-download. I was annoyed, and I didn’t think any harm would be done. If I knew that this is what was on there,” Robin gestured to the desk you were working at. “I wouldn’t have even tried messing with your tablet.”
You trained your eyes on the screen, then at your notes, but the anger you held started losing it’s intensity. All you needed to hear was a sincere apology, and it sounded sincere enough to you. But the feeling didn’t entirely disappear.
The sigh Robin heard made him hopeful. Did you still feel like choking him? Most likely. But it’s better than you wanting to snap him like a toothpick. He then heard you mumble something, but it was too quiet to understand. “What?”
“Do you know how close I was to tracking down and stopping the man who took everything from me?” You said quietly with gritted teeth. “I know he’s not dead. Everyone else says he is. And I could have proven it,” the pencil in your hand was suffering from your deadly grip. “If it weren’t for your petty dislike for me.”
Robin was aware of how childish and immature about why he acted so cold towards you. For a while, he thought you were just as mean. But it was just you retaliating and mirroring his behavior.
“So if you don’t mind,” you pointed in the direction of the exit. “I’d appreciate it if you got out of here. Immediately.”
“Let me ask one more question,” Robin jumped up and looked at where your eyes would be. “Why don’t you take off your mask? I can’t because Batman said I can’t give it away to anyone... but why can’t you?”
The tension in the room was suffocating, and the silence was deafening. You didn’t want to answer the question; something else inside you did. “After I got my powers, I was trained to never reveal my face. I was punished if I didn’t listen.” Your voice was almost inaudible. Barely a whisper.
“Oh,” Now Robin understood. It wasn’t a ‘haha, I’m keeping this secret from you to make you mad’ type of thing, it was something entirely different.
     “Now get out.”
