Milestone Monday 2
WIZARD OF OZ
On this date, August 15 in 1939, the movie The Wizard of Oz had its Hollywood premiere at Grauman's Chinese Theater in Los Angeles, California. The world premiere was five days earlier in, of all places, Green Bay, Wisconsin. Over the next two days it was test marketed in three locations, two of those were again in Wisconsin, Kenosha and Oconomowoc (the third location was Dennis, Massachusetts, another out-of-the-way location), before its ultimate Hollywood opening at Grauman’s on August 15. The movie’s nationwide release took place ten days later on August 25.
To celebrate this milestone, and our great state of Wisconsin’s place in the movie’s history, we present a few frames from our copy of the Dell Junior Treasury No. 5 comic book The Wizard of Oz, with an adaptation from L. Frank Baum’s story by Gaylord Du Bois, published by Dell Publishing in 1956.

Ok so my list of things I want to draw is IN NO PARTICULAR ORDER
1. Harry trying to shield Kim from the rain with his hand or maybe his ledger and it just falls behind his glasses and directly into his eyes
2. Harry and Kim pushing a stroller and someone is like ‘oh wow I bet he’s a cutie!! Can I see!!!’ And when they look it’s cuno

8. Someone doing thag thing from that one vidoe where the guy walks up to the security camera with sunglasses on and then takes them off the reveal another pair of sunglasses, probably jean or maybe Kim???
9. King of the junjil but with Harry du bois I do NOT know how I’m going to do this I do NOT want to animate please but he would so be like ‘what kind of animal do you think I’d be? SERIOUS ANSWERS ONLY’ to either the hardie boys or the 41st Kim would say rooster with the hardie boys and judit would say rooster with the 41st
Smaller side ones:

‘FOLLIES’ TRIVIA
Tumblr media
Sidney Guilaroff, Lucille Ball’s hair dresser, who takes responsibility for her famous ‘golden red’ for this movie, becoming her trademark color.
Tumblr media
Although they appear in different segments, this is the only feature film collaboration between “I Love Lucy co-stars" Lucille Ball and William Frawley. Coincidently, Frawley's character in this film shares a striking similarity with his iconic character of Fred Mertz on “I Love Lucy.” In this film he plays a money-hungry curmudgeon of a landlord, much like the show. In the above photo, he appears with director Minnelli and co-star Brice.
Tumblr media
The horse ridden by Lucille Ball is the Lone Ranger's Silver!
Tumblr media
Lucille Ball was actually fired by Ziegfeld from his road company production of Rio Rita in the 1930s.
Tumblr media
In February 1956, Lucy and Desi appeared on “MGM Parade” to promote their MGM film Forever Darling. The show also included footage of Lena Horne singing from Ziegfeld Follies.
Tumblr media
Lucy also played a showgirl in pink in “Lucy Gets Into Pictures” (ILL S4;E19) aired on February 21, 1955. The scene was inspired by Ziegfeld’s legendary stage shows featuring beautiful women wearing elaborate costumes navigating long staircases. To solidify the comparison, Ricky says he is going to a meeting with Mr. Minnelli. Vincente Minnelli was one of the directors of Ziegfeld Follies.
Tumblr media
Lucy Ricardo had previously cavorted around in a lampshade in the manner of a Ziegfeld girl in both the unaired pilot and “The Audition” (S1;E6).
Tumblr media
Ziegfeld Follies includes a sketch for Red Skelton called “When Television Comes” aka “Guzzler’s Gin” in which a (future) television spokesman gets increasingly sloshed on his product. This sketch was an obvious influence on Lucy’s Vitameatavegamin routine in “Lucy Does a TV Commercial” (ILL S1;E30) aired on May 5, 1952.
Tumblr media
Ziegfeld Girl Eve Whitney appeared on “I Love Lucy” episode “The Charm School” (ILL S3;E15). She used her own name for the character.
Tumblr media
The Telegraph Boy in "A Sweepstakes Ticket" Arthur Walsh - appeared on “I Love Lucy” in “Lucy Has Her Eyes Examined” (ILL S3;E11) as Arthur ‘King Cat’ Walsh. He teaches Lucy how to jitterbug.
Tumblr media
The first Judge in the “Pay the Two Dollars” James Crehan also played the Police Detective on “I Love Lucy in “The Great Train Robbery” (ILL S5;E5) first aired on October 31, 1955.
Tumblr media
Porky, a voice on the telephone in “Number Please” Peter Lawford, played “Password” against Lucille Ball on September 24, 1964.  At the time, Lawford was married to President Kennedy’s sister, Patricia. On November 26, 1968, Ball was a guest on “The Tonight Show” when Peter Lawford was sitting in for Johnny Carson.
Tumblr media
Chorus Boy Bert May appeared as a solo dancer on “The Lucy Show” in “Lucy and Tennessee Ernie Ford” (TLS S5;E21) in February 1967.
Tumblr media
In the dressing room, Lucy jokes with Fanny Brice, one of the funniest women in showbusiness.  This was the only time Ball and Brice collaborated and was Brice’s last film.
Tumblr media
Ziegfeld’s follies began on Broadway, so it was appropriate that the show featured past and future Broadway musical stars:
Lucille Ball ~ Wildcat (1960)
Carol Haney ~ The Pajama Game (1954)
Tommy Rall ~ Call Me Madame (1950)
Fanny Brice ~ The Ziegfeld Follies
Marion Bell ~ Brigadoon (1947)
Victor Moore ~ Anything Goes (1934)
There was a lot of material that was not filmed, but written and cast. Some of the original skits would have added “Lucy” performers Mickey Rooney, Ann Sothern, and Van Johnson to the cast.

NOW ON VIEW IN SPECIAL COLLECTIONS My Mighty Journey, A Waterfall’s Journey
In May, renowned printer and wood engraver Gaylord Schanilec stopped by the Special Collections department to deliver our copy of his latest project, My Mighty Journey, an impressive fine press book done in collaboration with author John Coy, designer Paul Nylander, and book binder Barb Eijadi, of which only 40 copies were produced. Gaylord gave us a tour of the book describing the concept, process, and work that went into creating this impressive work of art over the last four years. My Mighty Journey and other artists’ books by Gaylord Schanilec, are now on view in Special Collections. My Mighty Journey is open for reading and browsing.
Owamniyomni, the Falls of St. Anthony, is the only major waterfall on the Mississippi River. Over the past twelve thousand years, it has eroded fifteen miles to its present location in downtown Minneapolis. My Mighty Journey is the story of this migration, written from the perspective of the waterfall. The narrative considers the people who lived nearby, the ways they lived, and how the area around the waterfall changed drastically in the past two centuries.
Coy’s poetic narrative complements Schanilec’s stunning visual images, which feature material collected along the riverbank—wood, stones, fish, and plants—to show the progression of the waterfall as it moved fifteen miles upriver from present-day St. Paul to its current location in Minneapolis.
My Mighty Journey was purchased for the Hennepin County Library with funds generously donated by Chris Du Bois. A trade version of this book will be available in October. Join us for an author talk and book signing on Saturday, November 2, 2-3 p.m.

The Widow’s Best of 2018
In what has been another miserable year in many respects, the arts have been more important than ever in keeping spirits high. Here are some of the things we’ve liked. They lean a little, but – suffering as we are from ‘circus fatigue’ – certainly not all the way, towards that art form. But first we have something to say. Last year when we posted our ‘Best of’ round-up, one of our favourite cabaret acts had a fit of pique and unfollowed us and blocked us because she hadn’t made the cut. So this time, before offending anyone else of a similarly delicate disposition, we’d like to point out that to be considered for our list, we have to have seen your show – even if it’s an old one – during the year. So, now that’s clear, let’s proceed. All shows are in London unless otherwise stated.
BEST SHOW: Knot by the hand-to-hand duo of Nikki and JD – American Nikki Rummer and Frenchman Jean-Daniel Broussé – seen (again) at The Place. This show has it all: skill, emotion, humour, dance, music. We simply loved it! Don’t miss it on tour again in 2019.
Tumblr media
MALE CIRCUS ARTIST OF THE YEAR: Laci Simet, whose 40-year career has encompassed appearances on high wire, Wheel of Death, motorbike on the wire, skywalks and more recently The Semaphore – a recreation of the Koch Sisters revolving act – during which he balances on a knife edge that is constantly falling away from him. His was also the MOST READ WIDOW INTERVIEW.
Tumblr media
FEMALE CIRCUS ARTIST OF THE YEAR: Rhiannon Cave-Walker from Fauna, not just for her stunning skills but because she’s such lovely person. Fauna ran at Flora Herberich’s Battersea Circus Garden during Wandsworth Arts Fringe.
Tumblr media
BEST ACT: The flying Russian cradle in Cirque du Soleil’s OVO at the Royal Albert Hall, Barcode’s Russian bar with flyer Alexandra Royer and bases Eric Bates and Tristan Nielsen, seen at Cirque de Demain in Paris, and anything Lewie West did in Gravity & Other Myth’s Backbone, which ran at the Queen Elizabeth Hall.
BEST SURPRISE APPEARANCE: The stupendous Rowan Heydon-White, who popped up unannounced in Circa’s Peepshow during the Underbelly Festival.
MOST INNOVATIVE CIRCUS SHOW: The holograms used in Circus Roncalli.
youtube
BEST THEATRE SHOW: Mother by Peeping Tom Dance at the Barbican during the London International Mime Festival.
MOST WELCOME RETURN FROM INJURY: Lydia Harper, who returned to Cirque du Soleil’s TORUK after four months off following hip surgery. And Andrew Adams of The Silhouette. Having fallen 30ft from the Wallendas’ high wire and being badly hurt, he recovered and appeared with Sasha Harrington at Cirque de Demain.
BEST CIRCUS 250 SHOW: Chris Barltrop’s self-penned one-man show, Audacious Mr Astley – seen at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe – tops the year celebrating the birth of circus in the UK. Chris also gets BEST COSTUME for Astley’s beautiful and authentic red coat.
Tumblr media
BEST MC: The inimitable Calixte de Nigremont, whom we met at last at Cirque de Demain.
BEST MAGIC TRICK: Yann Frisch appearing a pack of cards from nowhere during Le Paradoxe de Georges in his spectacular movable theatre Le Camion-Chapiteau – which gets BEST VENUE – in Paris, and Eric Chien’s Ribbon act to become 2018 FISM close-up champion.
MOST ARRESTING IMAGES: Phia Menard’s show about suicide, Les Os Noirs, at the Montfort Theatre in Paris.
vimeo
BEST ONGOING NIGHT: Rose Thorne and Benjamin Louche’s Double R Club at Bethnal Green Working Men’s Club.
MOMENT OF WONDER: Cai Guo-Qiang’s exquisite daytime powder fireworks. Plus Lewie West skidding on this hands in Backbone, and Daniel Cave-Walker balancing on his head in Fauna. Look, no hands!
Tumblr media
BEST CIRCUS CABARET: Black Cat Bohemia at the Underbelly Festival at Southbank Centre. A simply wonderful show! It transcended the format, which can often look tired, and its line-up included our interviewees Lj Marles, Katharine Arnold and Nicolas Jelmoni, as well as others knock-out acts such as the lovely Jo Moss.
MOST UNIQUE SHOW: Crème de la Dregs by Dina Martina at Soho Theatre.
BEST ‘IN CONVERSATION’: Performance artist Rose English and Stine Hebert during Crying Out Loud’s Circus Sampler at Somerset House.
Tumblr media
BEST DANCE: B-boy Elihu Vazquez in Barely Methodical Troupe’s SHIFT, seen at the Norfolk & Norwich Festival, and German Cornejo and Gisela Galeassi’s thrilling duets in Tango After Dark at the Peacock Theatre.
BEST DANCE CIRCUS: Motionhouse’s Charge also at the Peacock. BEST CIRCUS FILM: Psycho-Circus with Christopher Lee from 1966, in which a circus becomes the location for stolen loot and murder!
Tumblr media
MOST FABULOUS: Régis Marvin Merveille N'Kissi Moggzi in the joyous French teen movie/documentary Swagger, which is set in one of the country’s most under-privileged neighbourhoods.
Tumblr media
BEST INTERVIEW: Gaylord Fields speaking to the tireless Petula Clark on WFMU. Hoping for some UK concerts in 2019.
BEST MUSIC IN A CIRCUS SHOW: Elliot Zoerner and Shenton Gregory’s soundtrack for Backbone, played live onstage.
MOST SHOWBIZ: Mr Murray Hill. Nobody cared when his show at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe drifted off course and never came back. It was enough to be in the New York icon’s presence.
Tumblr media
BEST SHOWBIZ BOOK: Spun Into Gold: The Secret Life of a Female Magician by Romany, Diva of Magic.
BEST BURLESQUE: Dita Von Teese, naturally, plus the stunning Zelia Rose, but certainly not the rest of the cast in The Art of the Teese at the Carré in Amsterdam.
BEST TV CHARACTER: Ciro di Marzio from Gomorra and Joséphine ‘Maître’ Karlsson from Engrenages/Spiral.
Tumblr media
MOST IMPRESSIVE MEMORY FEAT: Laura Linney in I Am Lucy Barton at the Bridge Theatre, who was word perfect in this 90-minute monologue.
BEST GIG: Winter Kills (Piano Magic) at Antenna Studios, Barry Adamson at Union Chapel, and Sevdaliza at The Barbican.
BEST SOLO SHOW: Songs for Nobodies, Bernadette Robinson’s astonishing portrayal of five divas: Garland, Cline, Piaf, Holiday and Callas, at Wilton’s Music Hall.
Tumblr media
MOST UPSETTING: The news that the spectacular French variety show Le Plus Grand Cabaret du Monde, hosted by Patrick Sébastien, is ending in June 2019. Sob!
MOST CHARISMATIC: Isabella Rossellini in her theatrical lecture, Link Link Circus, at the Queen Elizabeth Hall; a sort of follow-up to her wonderful Green Porno.
Tumblr media
ONE TO WATCH: Mieke Lizotte, currently with Gravity & Other Myths.
MOST ANTICIPATED IN 2019: Aurélia Thiérée’s Bells and Spells at the Theatre Royal during the Norfolk & Norwich Festival, and Isabelle Huppert in the film Greta!
MOST MISSED: Circus artist/actor Raphael Cruz, who died at just 32, and our lovely friend Merian Ganjou of the fabulous Dior Dancers, who died aged 79. Keep on flying, Merian!
youtube
Look out for the first of our interviews in the new year, which will be with one (or more) of the artists from Cirque Eloize show Hotel, which is coming to the Peacock Theatre in February.

Something I learned today* One of the things I love about wine is the way it constantly surprises you. You regularly realise how much you still don’t know (or at least I do): new places, new grapes, new twists on wines you thought you knew well. But for that, you need good, adventurous wine merchants prepared to seek out the new: you’re never going to find many surprises in the supermarket. And I was reminded of this at today’s tasting from the ever-brilliant The Bunch collective of independent wine merchants. Here, in no particular order, are some of the things I learnt today in the course of an hour and a half’s tasting (interspersed with long and anguished handwringing with Fiona Beckett, Anthony Rose, Olly Smith and others about the current state of our Brexiteer-hijacked nation). * Hüsker Dü, pictured above - 1984, from Zen Arcade: see https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rktLCGpQ3RA.
You can make Rioja taste like Beaujolais – Artuke Rioja 2018 (Lea and Sandeman, £11.95): I exaggerate somewhat but I honestly would not have recognised this as a Rioja, even though it’s 95 per cent tempranillo (the rest is viura – I’ll admit that I didn’t know you could use white grapes in Rioja, though perhaps I should have.) Carbonic maceration gives this wine a uniquely juicy and, well, Beaujolais-y tang. Not sure it would be my choice but it was arresting. And to be honest I could have put the contents of the entire brilliant Lea and Sandeman table in here too… You can make almost-rosé champagne that’s not rosé – Champagne Gatinois Brut Tradition NV, Grand Cru Ay (Hayes, Hanson and Clark, £34.45): this champagne is not listed as a rose, and its very delicate, slightly-pink colour can’t be the product of more than a couple of hours’ skin contact at most. Still, the 90 per cent pinot noir fruit shines through deliciously – expressive and long. Very unusual. Picpoul can be quite nice – (Adnams Picpoul de Pinet 2018, £7.49): It’s not the greatest-ever vinous revelation but I for one have got pretty tired of the ubiquity on even pub wine lists of flabby, blah Picpoul de Pinet: better than pub pinot grigio or a kick in the groin, slightly less enjoyable than a half of Stella. So it was a pleasure to taste this Picpoul, made for Adnams by Jeanjean. OK, so Jeanjean are now part of the giant AdVini group, reportedly France’s fourth-largest wine company, but one with its roots still firmly in its home patch of the Languedoc. And this is very decent at the price: clean and well-balanced with a little bit of breadth. There’s another Chablis taste-alike north of the Côte d’Or – Sorin Coquard Bourgogne Blanc 2016, Côte d’Auxerre (Private Cellar, £14.75): as something of a French geography anorak, I’m embarrassed to admit that I had until now missed the Cote d’Auxerre appellation (the generic AOC for the area around Irancy and St Bris, south-west of Chablis on the other side of the Autoroute du Soleil.) Pure and taut chardonnay with a quite Chablis-like stoney, mineral quality. There is a talented French winemaker called Gaylord – Domaine Gaylord Machon “Cuvée Lhony” 2015, Crozes-Hermitage (Lea and Sandeman, £25.95): one might suppose that most people with parents mad or cruel enough to call them “Gaylord” would themselves learn the lesson and name their boys, say, John (or Jean). Not Gaylord Machon, whose sons rejoice in the names Lhony and Ghany – after which he has named his two cuvées of Crozes-Hermitage. And fair play to him, this one is about as serious as Crozes gets: gorgeous fresh, brambly fruit with the added depth and structure of a strong vintage. Top notch. There’s a decent Austrian grape called Neuberger – Feiler-Artinger Neuberger 2017, Burgenland (Tanners, £22.50): writing this, it’s almost inevitable that tonight I will run into crowds of office workers drunk on this Austrian grape after over-indulging at one of the popular “Neuburger ‘n’ a Nurnburger” wine-and-sausage promos in local pubs. Still, I hadn’t come across it before this tasting. Apparently a roter veltliner/sylvaner cross, as some drunken smartass will doubtless tell me tonight before getting in the next round of neubergers. Quite full, fruity, well-balanced, expressive: for this kind of money to be honest I’d prefer a top-end grüner veltiner – but this is intriguing. You can make syrah in Morocco that tastes like the northern Rhône – Domaine des Ouled, Thaleb Syrah du Maroc “Tandem” 2017 (Yapp, £16.25): northern Rhône superstar Alain Graillot and partner Jacques Poulain make this syrah 30km north of Casablanca, Morocco. I guess the combination of altitude, Atlantic breezes, Crozes-Hermitage clones and a Rhône winemaker account for the fact that, although it’s made the best part of 1200km-plus south of Tain L’Hermitage, it tastes very, well, Crozes-like in its freshness and acidity, albeit with a bit more depth and fruit. Very good. Vaccarèse and Terret Noir are actual Rhône grapes – Gourt de Mautens 2015, IGP Vaucluse (Corney and Barrow, £54.75): I suppose I should know by the heart the grapes permitted in the Rasteau AOC (no Googling now) but while the grenache noir dominant in this is inter-planted with syrah, mourvèdre and cinsault (predictable), is Châteauneuf-du-Pape curiosity counoise allowed? Every wine critic remembers, with a mixture sympathy and schadenfreude, our colleague Oz Clarke’s televised failure to identify this and most of the other eight permitted Châteauneuf red grapes in a blind tasting – so I’ll admit now that I had forgotten the very existence of the vaccarèse and terret noir grapes in this group. Whether in their proportion or their mere unauthorised presence, they dictate that this Rasteau is actually labelled an IGP Vaucluse. And our government fancy their chances against French bureaucrats? Hilarious. Anyway, this is fantastically luscious and long, if expensive.
