Eternal Love - Episode 20
Tumblr media
Already 20 episodes in of Eternal Love, still not halfway through the whole series. Last episode, to be able to be together with Susu, Ye Hua pulled a stunt to pretend his death during the war with the Jiao Tribe. Unfortunately everything fell apart when Sujin found Susu and brought her to the Heavens where she's being held captive. But alive, thanks to the baby growing in her belly. She meets with Li Jing, who saved her from a fire cause by his underling, before getting taken away once again. Things are not as they seem.
Lexu tells Susu that she saved her only because of the child she's bearing and that the vows they had in the Mortal realm have no meaning since he's the Crown Prince.
Meanwhile, the Emperor visits his grandson and scolds him for not being careful. He also asks him about that human. Ye Hua says she took care of him while he was injured taking care of the Jin Ni Beast and that her being pregnant with his child was him repaying her kindness. The Emperor wants to keep her in the Heavens while Ye Hua wants to send her back to the mortal realm. Sujin suggests that they make her a concubine, so the child isn't a bastard from a titleless mother. Nobody agrees to it because it's against the rules of the celestial, plus it would a big offense to Bai Qian. Once they leave, Lian Song tells her there's no way for her to live peacefully in this realm. Ye Hua says once the child is born, he'll send her back and have her drink a potion to forget everything about him.
The Emperor scolds Sujin for her stupid idea, but she shows him the mirror, proving that Susu is probably more important to him than Ye Hua says. That she wanted to keep the mortal woman in the Heavens to keep an eye on her. The Emperor leaves her to supervise this. Luxiu comes to bring some soup to the Crown Prince, but Sujin won't let a rival get anywhere near Ye Hua, of course.
When he hears of the fire at the palace, Ye Hua rushes back to the palace. Susu is super happy, but Lexu tells her to respect the etiquette of the palace. Once she greets him, he sends her away. Because remember, he can't let them think she likes her. To protect her.
Fengjiu brings his tea to Donghua. He teases her about going to admire to moon to the celestial pearl platform, which is actually quite a dangerous place. He orders Siming to tell her not to go.
Ye Hua sends the maids away, saying that there shouldn't be any maids taking care of a human. But finally, they can reunite. He apologizes to her and promise that he won't let anyone bully her. Then she understands why he never talked about his family. He apologizes again and tells her that there were nothing good coming out of telling her. He tells her that as long as they are in the palace, he has to act cold towards her, but she should trust him. He's doing this for her. He asks of her not to interact with anyone. A difficult task for her in my opinion, knowing that she's pretty naive and gentle. He appoints a maid to her, Nainai.
The kicked out maids report to Lexu, in front of Sujin. She asks of Sujin to teach Susu about the etiquette and rules of the Heavens since she grew up by her side and knows how it works. Please open the door for even more drama.
Ye Hua and Susu obviously miss each other. Once Susu falls asleep, Ye Hua pays a visit without letting her know that he came. Susu seems to be spending most of her time looking at her mirror. Li Jing pays her a visit. He's surprised that she's Ye Hua's woman. He wants to have his doctor to take her pulse, however Susu is hesitant, what if it's against the rule. Sujin comes in just in time and chases Li Jing away. Xuannu is upset about Li Jing paying a visit to that girl, obviously since she looks a lot like A-yin, her rival. He tells her he has no interest in that woman, he only wanted to check on her since she was injured because of his underling. He offers to take her out for a walk, but Xuannu is forbidden to go as she please in the palace, since she's a traitor. She's really upset that they don't treat her well, but you know... what comes around goes around darling. You should have thought of it before betraying your side during the war.
Sujin pretends to be all friendly to Susu. Of course it's fake, she wants Ye Hua for herself. Sujin tells Susu that Ye Hua almost died. She also reveals that she grew up with Ye Hua, which is why she knows him well. Or not. Sujin offers to take Susu out. She says it was under Lexu's orders. Susu didn't want to go at first, since she didn't have Ye Hua's permissions. But Sujin convinces her as Susu is Ye Hua's woman. She says she'll teach her the ways around the palace and all... With the ominous music at the end, we're sure to see some drama happening again soon.
A very slow episode, setting us for more drama to come, definitely. Again, we're not anywhere near solving any of the problems until love triumphs over it all. Two snakes are in the palace, Susu is as dumb as possible. Well, it's more that she's very naive. And she really should listen more to Ye Hua, but why listen to your lover when a new girl comes in and calls you sister, right?

So a couple years ago, I fell into watching Chinese dramas and because my posts about the most recent one garnered some curiosity, here are the dramas what I have watched.
Hikaru no Go
Tumblr media
DID YOU KNOW. DID YOU KNOW. THAT IN 2020 THERE WAS A CHINESE DRAMA ADAPTATION OF HIKARU NO GO AND IT IS AMAZING AND MADE ME CRY ALL OVER AGAIN? It is faithful in spirit while making understandable alterations both for the setting and to avoid managing child actors for the entirety of the series (there are about six episodes with Hikaru/Shi Guang as an elementary school student before a time jump to high school).
If you are unfamiliar with Hikaru no Go I recommend becoming familiar with Hikaru no Go, my first and still one of the best sports manga. It's what Takeshi Obata was the artist on before Death Note and my hot take is that Obata post-Hikaru no Go is mid at best.
Hikaru no Go is a sports series about the most normal boy finding an antique go board that houses the soul of an ancient go master who died too young and with go regrets, so he bullies/guilts the boy into helping him play go so he can see or play a divine go move. In the process he acquires a rival/stalker in the form of the genius son of a go master. It's amazing and the drama absolutely does it justice.
The heart of the series is the relationship between Hikaru/Shi Huang and Fujiwara no Sai/Chu Ying.
It's just a fucking good series.
The Untamed
Tumblr media
According to one description on imdb, this is about two friends solving a series of murders. This is technically true, although it neglects to mention a few details.
Sixteen years after doing a whole lot of demonic blood magic shit and dying because of it, hated by society, Wei Wuxian (Xiao Zhan) is brought back from the dead by more super demonic blood magic and is recognized by his noble and esteemed peer/friend Lan Wangji (Wang Yibo) and trying to deal with why Wei Wuxian has been brought back from the dead leads to their investigating a series of murders that result in their becoming entangled in wider political schemes stretching back twenty years.
It's got weird pacing, prolonged flashbacks to explain a lot of the relationship dynamics, and basically an entirely self-contained sub-story that brings the main plot to a grinding halt. There are creatures and CGI effects of interesting quality. There are amazing wigs. There are piles of corpses. There's physical torture and emotional torture and some doomed love stuff and sword fights and musical instrument fights and a donkey and chicken theft and brotherhood and what you're willing to sacrifice for your goals and what goals you're willing to sacrifice for and it is based on a novel that ends in the protagonists raw dogging on the side of the road.
That part's not in the show.
Douluo Continent
Tumblr media
Ignorant country boy Tang San (Xiao Zhan) finds himself involved in the world of martial arts and magic after discovering a hidden talent and ends up in the group of fellow martial artists who are all weird or unorthodox or hiding crucial bits of their backstory like girl who is actually a rabbit and immediately decides Tang San is her best friend/husband (Wu Xianyi), guy who needs to become powerful enough to kill his older brother (Gao Taiyu), girl who rejected an engagement to the would-be brother killer and wants to fight him (Liu Mei Tong), guy who wants to ditch martial arts to become a great actor (Liu Run Nan), and girl who is too rich to be here (Ding Xiaoying). They learn together, they grow together, they fight monsters and embark on a tournament arc, and there's an overarching mystery about Tang San and his weak but simultaneously super powerful spirit summoning.
Even though the best technique is clearly the one where the boy in question can summon a sausage that you eat and heals you.
It's very much of a specific genre that can be pretty samey, but Douluo Continent has a charming cast that makes up for its predictable plot beats.
It does end on a cliffhanger that is possibly resolved in the sequel series where ... all the main characters were recast with, I'm guessing, slightly less pricey actors. Such is the way of things.
Word of Honour
Tumblr media
Do you like knowing what's going on? Then get the fuck out of here, Word of Honour is not for you. Real ones want to be immediately submerged into chaos and confusion and secret identities. You want Mr Bones' Wild Ride in plot form. Why has former superassassin Zhou Zishu (Zhang Zhe Han) abandoned the sect of assassins he created to live in wandering drunk anonymity as he slowly dies? Why is Wen Kexing (Gong Jun) stalking him aside from poorly censored horny desires? Is Wen Kexing actually a ghost? Can any of the impressionable youths attaching themselves to Zhou Zishu and Wen Kexing be stopped from their very poor choices in role models? What is up with this legendary hidden armoury and why do Zhou Zishu and Wen Kexing seem unable to escape the conspiracy around it? HOW HARD IS IT TO GET WOLONG'S FAMOUS NUTS?
Not recommended for people who constantly want to know what's happening or why X is doing Y, but great if you want to watch with someone and then after an episode, walk your dogs and try to figure out what's going on and what's going to happen (you will be wrong).
Advance Bravely
Tumblr media
What if the most ridiculously unrealistic and unhinged slashfic by a teenage girl who doesn't fully understand anything was adapted into a drama series where censorship means everything must be painted with a special "no homo" brush? You get Advance Bravely which is the most incoherently homoerotic thing I've ever watched. No one thinks you should watch Advance Bravely and you watch Advance Bravely and you agree but sometimes you just have to watch a beautiful trainwreck where the protagonist explains his lack of a girlfriend with erectile dysfunction and the series climax involves his being, essentially, trapped in a well.
Love Between Fairy and Devil
Tumblr media
DO YOU WANT TO GO FULL SHOUJO MANGA FANTASY?
Innocent fairy Orchid (Yu Shuxin) just wants to strengthen her immortal spirit and pass the exam that would let her serve in the palace of the fairy capital so she can catch glimpses of the War God Chang Heng (Zhang Ling He) who she is hopelessly in love with. Instead, an attempt to help her crush causes her to bumble her way into the high security spiritual prison that has held Dongfang Qingcang, the Moon Supreme (Dylan Wang), for 30,000 years.
DO YOU LIKE BIG NUMBERS BECAUSE YOU WILL GET TO SEE SOME BIG NUMBERS IN TERMS OF TIME SPAN AND AGES.
Because of some plot magic, Orchid and the Moon Supreme swap bodies and loophole out of prison, much to her distress. Their fates are tied together and Orchid becomes more familiar with the wider world and the politics between the realms and how much the fairy realm's supreme ruler fucking suuuuuuuuuuuucks while Moon Supreme finds himself having feelings again after they were tortured out of him in a mystical coffin prison as a child.
Moon Supreme's closest friend is a dragon. Orchid's closest friend is an opportunistic snakeoil saleswoman. There's a pissy younger brother and a bitchy but honourable love rival. There are secret origins and reincarnation and hidden identities and the way it alternates broad comedy and melodrama and sweet romance may give you whiplash.
I just love a bodyswap, you guys.
Sailor Moon vibes but Mamoru is actually interesting and becomes likeable.
Guardian
Tumblr media
Okay so the best thing about Guardian is not only that it's a censored adaptation of a novel with a same-sex romance, but that /the entire premise/ is altered for television purposes.
The novel is steeped in Chinese folk religion and the Underworld is real and mythical creatures secretly walk among us.
In the show?
ALIENS, BABY.
Ghosts? THOSE AREN'T REAL BECAUSE HUMANS DON'T HAVE SOULS, THEY'RE JUST ENERGY BEINGS.
It's so ridiculous it's endearing.
Anyway, it's about bros solving mysteries with a Monster of the Week vibe until it becomes about possibly the end of the world and alien domination and evil twins.
Mysterious Lotus Casebook
Tumblr media
IT'S TIME TO SOLVE CRIMES. IN ANCIENT CHINA.
Quack doctor Li Lianhua (Cheng Yi) is just trying to live a quiet life with his dog and his horse-drawn house. Fang Duobing (Joseph Zeng) just wants to gain admittance into the martial art cop organization that's carrying on the legacy of his dead teacher, Li Xiangyi, who was maybe never actually his teacher and also wasn't killed ten years previously by Di Fei Sheng (Xiao Shunyao), the head of an evil martial arts sect who is also not dead. Not nearly as many people as people think are dead! Identities are cleverly hidden behind pseudonyms and various levels of mask!
Crimes are solved and Li Lianhua is very tired about the whole thing. It's an unwilling buddy cop sort of thing until it becomes about youthful hubris and the sins of the past and also one woman's determination to conquer the world and give it to the man she loves, even if he doesn't want the world and also doesn't love her. We love a woman who takes what she wants and if necessary cuts a man's tendons and imprisons him in a torture pool so his blood can't clot until he agrees to be her wife, don't we, folks?
Folks?
Story of Kunning Palace
Tumblr media
The scheming empress Jiang Xue Ning (Bai Lu) dies and wakes up, eighteen-years-old, at the point in her life where she's on the verge of making the start of the decisions that lead her to the Very Bad End. She is going to make different decisions this time and prevent the things she regrets and avoid becoming the empress at all costs.
What you need to know about Story of Kunning Palace is that Bai Lu could have chemistry with a rock and she inadvertently collects a bisexual harem. Her end game love interest is Xie Wei (Zhang Ling He), the man who killed her, an advisor to the emperor, music teacher, double or triple agent, and sufferer of vampire snow madness and a fear of cats, whether adorably fluffy or badly CGI'd. But she's in love with noble civil servant Zhang Zhe (Wang Xing Yue), a pure and hardworking man who she seduced into betraying his principles, leading to his imprisonment and probable death. However, her childhood friend Yan Lin (Zhou Jun Wei) is in love with her and previously she rejected him VERY HARSHLY after his family fell into disfavour due to political machinations and Jiang Xue Ning had cemented the likelihood of her marriage to the next emperor. Also there's Princess Le Yang (Liu Xie Ning), who Jiang Xue Ning made an enemy of after the Princess fell in love with her when Jiang Xue Ning was crossdressing and did not take the reveal of her true gender well. Xue Shu (Elisa Ye) is an unfavoured daughter of a scheming lord who was the only truly loyal person Jiang Xue Ning knew as empress. ALL OF THESE PEOPLE FALL IN LOVE WITH JIANG XUE NING and you look at Bai Lu and go 'yes, that makes sense'.
It's mostly about the politics and scheming and Jiang Xue Ning trying to find a way to have a stable, satisfying life without betraying everyone she knows and standing on a pile of corpses, but the love shape Jiang Xue Ning isn't fully aware she's in is comparable in complexity to the plots between ministers and lords and dowager empresses and cousins and rebels.
The choices the characters make are maybe not always the best choices, but DAMN are they a good time.
Story of Kunning Palace is also one of the only times I have begged a character in a show to take a particular action and then she DID IT and fuck it was satisfying.
The Sleuth of the Ming Dynasty
Tumblr media
IT'S TIME TO SOLVE CRIMES. IN ANCIENT CHINA. AGAIN. BUT WITHOUT MARTIAL ARTS.
Tang Fan (Darren Chen) is a low-ranking government official and detective genius who loves food and hates routine work, but loves a fucked up crime. Since he spends most of his money on delicious food, he writes trashy porn under a variety of pseudonyms to pay his rent. Sui Zhou (Fu Meng Bo) is an imperial guard and ex-soldier with PTSD who has no time for nonsense but loves the passionate pursuit of justice and food. He's also From Money and has a very empty house that Tang Fan whines his way into after they solve a case together. Everyone is manipulated by dangerously powerful eunuch Wang Zhi (Liu Yao Yuan) who is the enemy of basically everyone, except for Tang Fan, who has the political and social awareness of a rock.
An amiably pathetic man solves a variety of mysteries, from murder to complex imperial assassination plots and also this really complicated one involving diluting the purity of silver currency, and also the executive producer is Jackie Chan.
It's missing the romance subplot that I understand is in the source novel and also apparently there's an overarching plot involving a cult?! which we don't get here, but there's lots of bombs which are almost as good as a cult, maybe? (They're not.)
Divine Destiny
Tumblr media
This is the one we're currently watching and the ride that this show is. How many plots can be crammed into one show? How many ridiculous but true things can I say about this show?
Ji Ruochen (Ma Tianyu) is an orphan who dreams of martial arts adventures. Raised by a couple who run a Crime Inn, one day a customer robbery goes very wrong when the customer turns out to be the latest incarnation of Yin Feng, the Banished God (Marius Wang). Ji Ruochen accidentally kills the Banished God and his foster parents promptly take the body into the desert and dump it down a cliff, but not before taking a necklace made from a piece of Gu Qing, the Blue Stone Goddess (Xuan Lu), which is supposed to let her recognize the Banished God in their final incarnation. Accidentally stealing the Banished God's identity, Ji Ruochen finds himself a hotly desired commodity by the cultivation sects who are all eager to have the Banished God as a disciple for prophecy reasons. He goes with Zhang Yinyin (Angelababy), a feisty, argumentative girl who has had to work extra hard because her spirit was contaminated by a demonic root planted by the evil nine-tailed fox who is poorly imprisoned in a cave anyone can access.
MEANWHILE some dudes with amazing moustaches and a penchant for laughing in delight at their own evil have found the body of the Banished God and done some questionable mystical shit to put him in a new body and nurture a grudge against Ji Ruochen for stealing his identity.
THEN Gu Qing meets Ji Ruochen and like everyone else assumes he's the Banished God and she falls in love with him (Gu Qing having been a literal rock spirit who cultivated to immortality under the guidance of the Banished God, who followed her into the mortal realm and a cycle of 100 incarnations after Gu Qing accidentally Did A Crime) but then falls in love with HIM.
ALSO Zhang Yinyin is always at risk of succumbing to the temptation of using the demonic fox power that is within her even though that will literally turn her into a demon but maybe it's worth it if a woman who is actually a goddess who is actually a rock is making eyes at the junior you brought into the sect and are in love with and you want to be more powerful than her?
ALSO what's the mysterious power that let Ji Ruochen kill the Banished God in the first place?
IS the woman seeking revenge for the death of the Banished God's mortal incarnation his sister or his cousin or his "cousin"?
WHY is the only love language of immortals stalking?
There's a homunculus and a baby snake demon who is the most precious angel in the world and so many evil dudes delighted in how evil they are and TWO GOOD AND ALIVE PARENTS and a pair of comical monks who have a special attack with a name they have to shout out every time they use it.
Oh and the imprisoned fox demon may have an ex who just hangs out on a rock in something called the Endless Ocean wearing a mask and playing go against the homunculus he made.
And there's an ancient master who lives in an ice mountain and eats memories of love.
Also some people might be secret demons.
There's some weddings.
There's a tiny woman with an ice sword who brutally murders so many dudes.
Do you like CGI birds?
Do you like giant mechanical CGI birds that are for riding purposes?
There's a desert hermit who has a son who is a giant tortoise.
So many things are going on and terrible decisions are constantly being made and it's over a week before I can watch another episode and it's driving me mad. WHAT WILL BE THE FALLOUT OF THE MOST RECENT BAD DECISIONS?

Three Families Divide Jin
This was intended to be a translation of the first part of the Tongjian jishi benmo通鑑紀事本末 ("Comprehensive Mirror Chronicling Affairs from Beginning to End") which is a rearrangement of the Zizhi Tongjian into topics rather than a strictly chronology done by Yuan Shu (1131-1205) . However I quickly realized that for this particular topic there is no rearrangement done, as the ZZTJ after starting the chronicle in 403 BC with the elevation of Wei, Zhan and Han immediately launches into an extended retrospective. So I guess it's actually just a translation of the beginning of the ZZTJ. I have reluctantly decided to skip Sima Guang's long commentary at the start, and after the death of the Elder of Zhi in the interest of actually completing anything. Note that "Han" here refer throughout to the Warring states era state of Han韓 rather than the later Han漢 empire.
Three Families Divide Jin
23rd Year of King Weilie of Zhou [403 BC], began to instruct Jin's great men Wei Si, Zhao Ji, and Han韓 Qian to be Marquises.
Earlier, Count Xuan of Zhi wanted to use Yao as heir. Zhi Guo said:
He is not as good as Xiao. That which people find worthy with Yao are five, that which he does not match up in is one. His beautiful temple-hair, his tallness and large size are admirable. That he shoots and drives with the strength of his feet is worthy. That his skill and craft are fully provided is worthy. That his artful writings are articulate and graceful is worthy. That he is strong, resolute, decisive and daring is worthy. It is like this, but he is extremely inhumane. In case he used his five worthy qualities to climb past people, but uses his inhumaneness to act against them, who would be able to treat with him? If in the end [you] install Yao, the Zhi lineage will surely be wiped out.
He did not listen. Zhi Guo separated from the family with the Grand Scribe, and became the Fu clan.
[Wei Zhao says: Count Xuan of Zhi was the Jin dignitary Xun Li's son, Shen. Yao was Count Xuan's son, [known as] the Elder of Zhi. His posthumous title was Count Xiang. Zhi Gao was a kinsman of the Zhi clan. Xiao was Count Xuan's common-born son.]
Among Count Jian of Zhao's sons, the elder was called Bolu and the younger Wuxu. He wanted to set up the heir, nu did not know who should be installed. He therefore wrote a speech with teachings and admonishing in two letters, and gave them to his two sons, saying:
Vigilantly familiarize yourself with it!
After three years, he asked about it. Bolu and not been able to study his speech. He demanded his letter, but he had already lost it. He asked Wuxu, he recited his speech with great practice. He demanded his letter, he produced it from within his sleeves and laid it before him. And so Count Jian considered Wuxu to be worthy, and installed him as heir.
Count Jian sent Yin Duo to be at Jinyang. He inquired, saying:
Use it as silk from a cocoon? Or use it as a protecting shield?
Count Jian said:
A protecting shield!
Yin Duo reduced the number of his households. Count Jian spoke to Wuxu, saying:
If the state of Jin has difficulties, regardless of Yin Duo being of little importance, and regardless of Jinyang being far away, be sure to use is as somewhere to return to.
[Hu Sansheng says: “To extract the people's vital bounty is like pulling a silk thread from a cocoon.”]
When Count Xuan of Zhi passed, Count Xiang of Zhi had the government. He feasted Count Kang of Han and Count Huan of Wei at Lantai. The Elder of Zhi made fun of Count Kang and insulted Duan Gui. Zhi Guo heard about it, and admonished, saying:
If a ruler does not prepare against difficulties, difficulties will surely arrive!
The Elder of Zhi said:
Difficulties will be due to me. I will not be in difficulties, who would dare to raise them up!
He replied, saying:
Not so. The Book of Xia has this: “One man makes three mistakes, will his enemies be made clear? The unseen must be planned for.” In all cases the Lordly Man is able to pay attention to small things, and for that reason he has no large worries. Now the ruler in a single feast then has shamed a lord of men and his minister. Again to not make preparations but say “they do not dare to raise up difficulties”, nothing then is impossible. If black flies, ants, wasps and scorpions are all able to injure a person, then how much more a lord and his minister.
He did not listen.
The Elder of Zhi requested land from Count Kang of Han. Count Kang intended not to give it. Duan Gui said:
The Elder of Zhi is fond of gains and is headstrong. If we do not give it, he will attack us. It is not as good as giving it. That one is accustomed to obtaining land, and will surely request it from other people. [If] other people will not give it, he will surely turn against them with troops. Afterwards we will obtain our escape from worries and wait for a reversal in affairs.
Count Kang said:
Good.
He sent messengers to bring a town of ten thousand families to the Elder of Zhi. The Elder of Zhi was pleased. Again he demanded land from Count Huan of Wei. Count Huan intended not to give it. Ren Zhang said:
What is the reason for not giving?
Count Huan said:
He has no reason to exhort land is the reason for not giving.
Ren Zhang said:
He has no reason to exhort land, the various great men will surely be afraid. Us giving him land, and the Elder of Zhi will surely be haughty. When that one is haughty, he will make light of his foes. When these are afraid, they will be affectionate with each other. Use troops of those affectionate with each other and wait for a person to make light of his foes, and the Zhi clan's lifespan will surely not be long. The Book of Zhou says: “If you want to defeat him, you must for the moment assist him. If you want to take from him, you must for the moment give to him. What the ruler [said] is not as good as giving it to him, and so make haughty the Elder of Zhi. Afterwards we can chose who to make contact with and make plans against the Zhi clan. What recourse is there in for us alone to be the Zhi clan's target!
Count Huan said:
Good.
Then he gave him a town of ten thousand families.
The Elder of Zhi also demanded the lands of Cai and Gaolang from Count Xiang of Zhao [i.e. Wuxu who had succeed his father, Count Jian.] Count Xiang did not give it. The Elder of Zhi was angry, and led the forces of Han and Wei to attack the Zhao clan. Count Xiang wanted to set out, and said:
Where can we flee?
His followers said:
Changzi is nearby, moreover the walls are thick and complete.
Count Xiang said:
The people exhausted their strength completing them. To also be wrecked and die defending them, who of them will be with us!
The followers said:
Handan's granaries and armouries are full
Count Xiang said:
[We] extracted the people's vital bounty to fill it. Also because of that to kill them, who of them will be with us! Those at Jinyang belonged to the Previous Ruler and were treated generously by Yin Duo. The people will surely be agreeable.
Therefore he fled to Jinyang.
The three families used the people of the state to besiege and flood him, that of the city walls which was not immersed measured three ban [3 ban = 6 chi]. They submerged stoves to produce frogs, and the people had no rebellious thoughts. The Elder of Zhi went to the water. Count Huan of Wei steered and Count Kang of Han was on his right side in the carriage. [A traditional chariot had a crew of three. The noble, the driver, and the bodyguard on the right.] The Elder of Zhi said:
I have now learned water can be used to destroy a person's state.
Count Huan elbowed Count Kang. Count Kang trod on the back of Count Huan's foot. By using the Fen River he could flood Anyi, and with the Jiang River he could flood Pingyang.
Xi Ci spoke to the Elder of Zhi, saying:
Han and Wei are certain to turn against you.
The Elder of Zhi said:
My Count, how can you know that?
Xi Ci said:
It is due to people's affairs [I] know it. In all cases troops from Han and Wei have been used to attack Zhao. When Zhao perishes, the difficulties are sure to reach Han and Wei. Now the pledge is to win against Zhao and then divide its land into three. The walls that are not immersed measures three ban. People and horses eat each other. The city will surrender within days, yet the two Counts have no joyful resolve, but have an anxious appearance. If they are not turning against you, then why?
Next day, the Elder of Zhi reported Xi Ci's words to the two Counts. The two Counts said:
This is a case of a slanderous person intending to be the Zhao clan's wandering persuader, making the ruler be suspicious of the two families and negligent in the attack on the Zhao clan. If not so, why in that case are the two families not profiting from morning to evening by dividing the fields of the Zhao clan, but intend to be in precarious difficulty in an affair with no possibility for success!
The two Counts went out. Xi Ci entered and said:
Why did my ruler report your subject's words to the two Counts?
The Elder of Zhi said:
Sir, how did you know that?
He replied, saying:
Your subject saw them looking at your subject in particular, and then scurried away, and [I] knew your subject had obtained their feelings.
The Elder of Bo did not make amends, and Xi Ci requested to be sent to Qi.
Count Xiang of Zhao sent Zhang Mengtan to furtively go out and see the two Counts. He said:
Your subject has heard that when the lips are gone, the teeth are cold. Now the Elder of Zhi leads Han and Wei to attack Zhao. When Zhao is destroyed, Han and Wei will be next.
The two Counts said:
In our hearts we know that it is so. [We] fear if the affair is not be carried out when the plan leaks, then the calamity would become extreme.
Zhang Mengtan said:
The plan goes out from the two Counts' mouths, and goes in your subject's ears. What is the harm!
The two Counts therefore furtively made a pledge with Zhang Mengtan, that on the appointed day they would dispatch [their forces]. Count Xiang sent people at night to kill the functionary who guarded the dikes, and then breach the water to flood into the Elder of Bo's army. The Elder of Bo's army put a stop to water but was in disorder. Han and Wei flanked and then struck them, Count Xiang commanded his solders to assault them in front. They greatly defeated the Elder of Bo's multitudes, and thereupon killed the Elder of Bo and entirely wiped out the members of the Zhi clan. Only Fu Guo survived.
The three families divided the fields of the Zhi clan. Count Xiang of Zhao lacquered the Elder of Zhi's head, and used it as a drinking vessel. The Elder of Bo's subject Yu Rang wished to get revenge on him. He therefore pretended to be a punished criminal, tucked a spoon-head dagger, and entered within Count Xiang's palace to plaster the lavatory. Count Xiang went to the lavatory, felt his heart race. He search it and captured Yu Rang. His left and right wished to kill him. Count Xiang said:
The Elder of Zhi died without descendants, and yet this person wishes to revenge him, truly a right-principled gentleman. I will respectfully release him, and that is all.
He therefore let him go. Yu Rang again lacquered his body to become leprous, and swallowed charcoal to become mute. He went to beg at the market, his wife did not recognize him. He went to see his friend. His friend recognized him, and he began sobbing at him, saying:
Due to Sir's talents, [if you were] to serve Zhao Meng as a subject, [you] would surely obtain affection and favour. Sir would then have what [you] wished to have, would that not be easy? Why then make yourself miserable like this? The search for vengeance, would not also be difficult!
Yu Rang said:
Then [I] would have given my pledge as a subject while also seeking to kill him, this is to have two hearts. Overall, what I am doing is extremely difficult, that is all. However, what I am doing perhaps might shame those in later generations Under Heaven who are subjects with two hearts in their breasts.
Count Xiang set out and Yu Rang hid under a bridge. Count Xiang arrived at the bridge, and his horse startled. He searched it and got Yu Rang, and consequently killed him.
Count Xiang, because Bolu had not been installed, although he had five sons, was not willing to set up an heir. He ennobled Bolu's son at Dai. He was called Lord Cheng of Dai and passed young. He installed his son Huan as the Zhao clan's heir. Count Xiang passed, and his younger brother, Count Huan, expelled Huan, and installed himself. After one year, he passed. The people of the Zhao clan said:
Count Huan's instalment was not Ruler Xiang's idea.
Therefore they together killed his son[s]. They then welcomed Huan# and installed him. This was Count Xian. Count Xian begot Ji, this was Marquis Lie. Wei Si was the grandson of Count Huan Wei, this was Marquis Wen. Count Kang of Han begot Count Wu. Count Wu begot Qian. This was Marquis Jing.
Marquis Wen of Wei used the Bu Zixia and Tian Zifang as teachers. Always when he passed by the cottage of Duangan Mu, he was certain to bow toward the front crossbar [on his chariot]. Many of the Four Regions' worthy gentlemen reverted to him. Marquis Wen was dranking wine with the crowd of subjects. They were having fun but then it was raining. He called for his carriage, wanting to go out into the wilderness. Left and right said:
Today we are drinking and having fun, and the sky is also raining. Why would my lord go?
Marquis Wen said:
I had an appointment to hunt with the gamekeeper. Though we are having fun, how could [I] not meet with someone at the appointed time.
Then he left and and put a stop to it himself.
Han [wanted] to borrow a force from Wei to attack Zhao. Marquis Wen said:
This Orphan and Zhao are brothers. [I] do not dare to hear the instruction.
Wei [wanted] to borrow a force from Wei to attack Han. Marquis Wen responded to them in the same way. The two states were both angry and left. Later they understood Marquis Wen was reconciling them, and both came to court in Wei. Wei hence was first to be great among the Three Wei. The various feudal princes were unable to contend whit them.

Hey there, hope you’re having a winter time as nice as it can be! I’m looking for a male face claim to portray a typical fantasy elf (think LoTR, Dragon Age, The Witcher, etc). I’m imagining sharp facial features and slim and/or builds. Ethnicity doesn’t matter at all. Would prefer suggestion with fantasy/historical resources but if impossible I’ll figure something out. Thank you very much! Also: Love the work you’re doing with this blog!

Any historical figures you legitimately dislike?
Well, there's Hou Jing. Mixture of an overblown ego and what even the people of those days would consider cruelty in war.
I also don't like Liu Ziye or Liu Yu. The former was a horny teenager who turned his court into an orgy with some rape, while the latter was randomly murdering people by the age of 13.
I have a particular distaste for Gao Zhan and Gao Wei of Northern Qi. The former was too fond of torture and the latter went around murdering everyone who could defend him against Northern Zhou.
The Northern / Southern dynasties in general was filled with assholes.
I don't have much patience for Yang Guang or Li Yuanji.
I also dislike Xu Jingzong for being a bastard who killed many innocent officials to try and please Li Zhi.

Eternal Love - Episode 18
Tumblr media
So someday I will be over with rewatching this series, I am really the type of people who watch dramas by phase and I haven't been in that kind of phase for a while. But seriously, whenever I get back to this specific one, the opening is giving me the chills. It's just so good and lovely, I don't know. Maybe cause it was one of my first Chinese historical dramas, apart from Startling by each step and Princess Pearl Return or whatever the English name are for those, because I refer to them in Chinese haha.
Anyways, if my memory is good enough, we left right when Yehua is getting ready to fake his death and live a happy life with his Susu, war at the verge of raging against the... is it jiao or yao again? Can't remember that precisely. Anyways.
Yep the Jiao people. So Changhai isn't that willing for a war, because poor them will face the aftermaths once the celestial beings will be gone. So Yehua says they have to exterminate them until there's no more left. The injured are numerous. The injured soldiers are afraid of a big war because of their families. Once Diefeng introduce Yehua, the soldiers are pleading to get rid of the Jiao and Yehua promises he will drive them away.
When Yehua goes back to Susu, she's nauseated. She's pregnant hahaha. She's so happy about it, Yehua too. But he wants to send her away because of the war that will happen. He promises it's the last time they will be separated. They are so cute. She wonders about how Yehua was as a child. If his mom gave birth to him without any mishaps. And that he was taken away from his mom to train every day. She feels sad for him too and for the crown prince of the Heaven. Oh, it so happens they are the same person.
Li Jing's brother gets rejected by his uncle at the Jiao people. Things are about to go down. The uncle sends his son to feast and the water lord tries to send off his daughter to marry in the Jiao people. Then Yehua and Diefeng come over and Yehua is unhappy about the situation. Diefeng pushes his uncle to kill the little prince. So of course, it's going to start the war between Changhai and the Jiao people.
Yehua takes Susu back to Junji mountains. He promises her to be back for the child's birth. He makes her promise not to go outside of this little forest and he tells her he will explain everything to her once he's back. He sets a barrier to protect Susu from everyone else and goes back to report to Heaven.
Lian Song agrees to help Yehua. But he can't rush things, because if the Celestial Emperor has any doubts, he will find him wherever he's hiding. Ugh. Sujin moment. She bothers me so much. She's there to clean Yehua's palace to prepare for the wedding with Bai Qian. Yehua completely ignores her.
Yehua pays a visit to his mom. Her headpiece is so pretty. She's probably one of the prettiest actress of this drama. And... somehow my tv decided not to work. Thank you very much... It's a very heartfelt moment, when she's getting sad about how she couldn't be by her son's side as he grew up. She's worried that he's unhappy about his betrothal and she wished that he didn't have to sacrifice that much as the Crown Prince. She's worried about him going to battle the Jiao Tribe, but Lian Song comforts her saying that he's as powerful than Mo Yuan so there's nothing to be worried about.
I wish Ye Hua didn't always have such ugly headpieces. Sujin also joins the war force. Lian Song tries to talk her out of it. Also that she has to completely give up on Ye Hua since she married the Emperor. As usual, she's annoying. Ye Hua calls to send the troops that same night. His advisors are a bit reluctant, but our main lead thought of everything. Lian Song tries to convince Ye Hua out of his plan, but when he has decided something, I believe we can't have him change his mind.
Since I wrote this recap in two parts, it's hard for me to write my general thoughts accurately since I know what is going on after this. Let's say we are slowly hoping for a better future, but knowing that there are 30 something more episodes to go... It won't happen that easily and drama is bound to happen.
