The Story of the RTDLDX Box-art Leak

news of the Magolor Epilogue side mode is officially out! with that, say hello to @qui-gg , the original source of the RTDLDX box-art leak to the kirby fandom!

watching the leak spread in real time, the both of us talked and thought it would be fun to make a post about all of this later as a piece of fandom history. the reason why i'm making the post and not her is because while she was the original source, i'm the only one who witnessed the rest of the entire story firsthand.

note: all screenshots of dms/quig's initial reactions/info from quig and her friend posted here i received permission to share. all other screenshots are from public servers, so names are not censored unless someone asked me to, or unless they're the person who caused the leak to spread to the fandom at large. with that, let's get into the story 👇

the story starts with quig's friend, who works at gamestop, posting images of the the boxart to a mutual server they share

the white is the name of quig's friend censored. also for consistency's sake, note that these screenshots from quig are in central time. the rest of the screenshots in this post are from me and in pacific time (2 hours behind)

quig's friend isn't into kirby and had taken and shared the pictures without the knowledge that there was even anything special or spoilery on them. they had only taken it to show quig, because they knew quig as the kirby person of their friend group. quig decided to share it to my discord server soon after

a thread for the leak was made in the server instead of quig dming everyone individually, and we quickly established a rule against reposting it outside of this server. however, it was still allowed for it to be shared privately

everyone talked about the news excitedly for a while. quig continued to feed us more early info from their friend that never made it into the main leak spread throughout fandom, like photos of the inside box art, preorder bonuses, and info that apparently the boxarts were going to be displayed in-stores in about a week, confirming some sort of announcement or trailer soon.

around 2-3 hours later, we started to hear about other places talking about the leak.

at the time, no one suspected foul play. considering quig's friend's gamestop had received the boxart, everyone assumed that gamestop in general had received it and that other employees had also leaked it. however-

also going back and checking the image shared to reddit, we confirmed it was the same picture. then begun several bouts of back and forths trying to figure out how it had been leaked

apparently the very first leak of it outside of my server was to the r/kirby discord server. at this point, because im the owner and head mod of my server, and we had already established many times that we had not wanted it to be shared outside of there, and because quig was starting to get stressed about this immediately getting out of control, i decided to do my own investigating and find out who had leaked it so i could yell at them for breaking the rules

these were the very first messages to r/kirby that started the leak getting out to the entire fandom. ive censored her name in pink because i dont want anyone to attack this person, and from this point on i'll be calling her "the leaker". interestingly, it was someone not from my server, however, by chance, i happened to know her decently well anyways because we share some of the same spaces. because of this, i just dm'd her directly asking where she had gotten the picture from, providing additional context because, while i knew her, we didn't talk much and i thought it would be rude to only ask that without letting her know why

by that time it turns out she had went to bed, however. so for the rest of the night i did more asking around and found out who had shared it on my own. the person who showed it to her did end up being from my server. they were a friend of the leaker and had shared it to her in dms, but told me that they didn't know she had posted it to r/kirby because she never asked or let them know she was going to do so.

because i knew the person who had shared the box-art image to the leaker was cool, as well as sharing in dms not being against our rules, i decided there was no malicious intent and decided to lay off my "ass kicking" mood. i guess as you'd expect, the leak happened because it was shared from friend to friend and it took just one person not getting the memo it shouldn't be shared publicly for all of this to get out of control. that was my thought process at the time.

i already found out who had shared the image to the leaker, but since i had already sent a dm to said leaker about the event, i figured id just leave the messages to confirm and see what she had to say about it in the morning. like said in the beginning of this post, i did not get permission to share the dms so i will not post any screenshots, but ill summarize what was said next

i was told the next morning that, yes, the person who i had already known had given her the photo had given it to her. the leaker had taken it and immediately shared it to the largest kirby discord server out there because "shes incredibly impulsive" and "wanted the attention and clout", but otherwise was sorry. she told me she felt incredibly guilty about the whole event and went on to say stuff about how she was an "worthless human being". i told her it was fine and that she didn't have to be so harsh on herself, i had only wanted her to know the consequences, since at this point the next day, large gaming news sites had begun posting about it and it had gotten really big, to the point where quig rescinded her previous statement that her friend was in no danger and had started to worry this could lead to them getting hurt. the leaker told me she did all of this because she couldnt help wanting the clout over everything else if she wasnt told the consequences to her face

hey getting lost in the hype happens right? i wasnt the most happy that quig was feeling incredibly stressed now and that their friend could be in danger because someone wanted clout without thinking of the consequences, but this stuff happens. being impulsive happens. once the official news comes out sometime around a week later, this would all blow over. once again i reassured the leaker this was all fine, and we had a good friendly talk for several hours afterwards

later that day, quig found a youtube comment on the gamexplain video about the leak

the detective work started up once again. the canadian portion could be assumed from the french text alongside the english on the box, but it shouldn't have been public that it was from a canadian gamestop employee. quig started to worry that people were now digging so hard for the source their friend would get doxx'd. we did not believe it to be a random lurker in the server, because none of the other info quig had told us had gotten out.

initially i thought this was my fault. i mentioned it was from a gamestop employee in the tags of this post when i had made it the previous day, and then deleted those tags about 15 hours afterwards once we realized this was getting way too big. while not unreasonable, i found it a bit strange that this info had come from me, though

obviously people take tumblr as being the dead site that no one uses, and the leak news in general was spreading much more sluggishly over here with our smaller fandom and, compared to twitter and reddit, significantly less reach. not to mention i had left that information in the tags where less people read anyways, and with the word gamestop censored and my post itself not in the main kirby tags, the person in the youtube screenshot had to have been someone who follows me and was active on tumblr during that short timeframe for this to have happened

completely unrelated, later in the afternoon i decided to look in the r/kirby server's leak thread for fun, specifically the messages from the leaker. the previous day, people were swarming her about where she had gotten the image since she was the first person to post it to the general fandom. people were speculating that the leak was fake and that the leaker could've tried to fake it. there were lots of vague rumors about it being from "some random discord server out in the world". as my server was almost like the "ground 0" of the leak, it was a lot of fun watching this and watching people talk about us. i used the leakers messages as a boost to find these types of messages, since the r/kirby spoiler thread had dissolved to regular leak discussion.

and i found these

it turns out she was the one who had leaked that this was from a gamestop employee. from my dms without letting me know once again. this was almost exactly 2 hours before i had the aforementioned conversation in dms with her. before she apologized and told me she felt immensely guilty and asked if there was anything she could do. before she told me she leaked the initial info because no one had told her the consequences to her face

excuse me in advance, please take the following as my interpretation of the event alone. i say and assume these things because of many prior encounters with this person

there is a lot i could say about these screenshots. i was absolutely furious when i saw them. in my eyes, the blatant 180 shift in attitude and behavior when talking to the public and when talking to me in my dms only a short while later shows the exact opposite amount of care she told me she had. the complete lack of acknowledgement of several people mentioning someone could get fired because of her actions, instead choosing to focus on how confirmation of it being from a gamestop employee just confirms the leak is real now... the fact that she said behind my back that i needed to chill, right before telling me she thought she was a worthless human being for doing this... i'm sparing the full details of my grievances because i don't want to make this a vent post or about me; i say this as a conclusion to this part of the story. as in, i think there's zero reason to believe the leaker actually ever gave a shit. i fully believe she purposely stepped over the consequences for the sake of clout

(to be clear i'm not trying to totally absolve myself of responsibility here, or make this some kinda persuasive argument. it totally could've been just my fault that the gamestop employee info got out. i don't particularly care if people think the leaker didn't do anything wrong either. whatever, make your own conclusions based off what's there)

thus ends the bias section. luckily the next news we got from quig's friend was very good

really a one in a million event. we now had concrete proof that her friend was, for sure, at 0 risk by some stroke of luck.

with that, the server, and quig and her friend, enjoyed the leak chaos in peace. this stuff doesn't happen often in the kirby fandom, and we thought this was a particularly interesting leak story to share as people who were there from start to finish. watching everything play out from one person, to one group, to the whole fandom and more, while stressful at times, was a unique and overall really fun experience

thank you for reading if you've made it this far! i know this post is kinda long, but i hope you've enjoyed this (probably over-comprehensive lol) write-up. really my final words on the subject are: i hope people can understand from reading this that, while getting lost in the hype happens, please know that there are real life people behind leaks. there can be real consequences to one person letting it slip. don't spread leaks without asking and, if you know the source of a leak, don't go around shouting it from the rooftops. not to mention the amount of people upset that they got spoiled. even though this was very tame as a back of box-art leak, ultimately its best if these things are kept secret and in small groups

some final words from quig (that i'm paraphrasing on her behalf): she says sorry to anyone who didn't want to see the leak and got spoiled early. she never meant for it to spread out of control, and had believed the leak would spread from multiple sources at the same time, instead of being just from her

How did you get into Fire Emblem? Saw Shadow Dragon in my local Gamestop one day and didn't buy it even though it stuck out to me with its somber and less colorful boxart. Next time I saw a Fire Emblem game in the store, i.e., Awakening, I bought and played it. The rest is history.

Have you had any other TOA muses? Besides Marth and Rafal I've also written Xane. Though there isn't a lot of data, my second muse slot historically (and presently) being reserved for dragons tickles me a lot.

Do you think you have a type of character you gravitate towards? Not really. My tastes are unexplainably versatile. I can favor the sweet and friendly golden boy type characters, or the less pristine and morally ambiguous "bad boy" types, and everything in-between. This isn't just true for TOA but also for characters from different series. My friends have a lot of trouble forecasting possible favorites for me because of it.

What do you believe you enjoy writing the most? Emotions. Conflict with those emotions. Mwahahahaha

Favorite TOA-related memory: The first few months into my TOA debut when everything was bright, fresh, and new. Meeting new friends and forging bonds with other characters was super fun and I still remember who was around me during that time. Farina (written by Maxie) is the closest muse to Marth in terms of when they joined TOA and who has stayed to this day.

Got any delusions that didn’t see the light of day in TOA that you’d like to share? I tend to be very stable, loyal, and proactive in my delusions. If they're strong enough I pursue them, like Xane and Rafal. Rath would be among them if I ever replayed FE7 and if I determined having three muses wouldn't make my performance suffer over all.

It seems this time we’re getting the Toriyama artwork as the boxart. They used this gorgeous piece for the Japanese boxart of the PlayStation 3, 4 and Vita versions of Builders, while they used a nice 3D render for the western PS4 release.

What’s up guys? While last year 🎅🏻🎄Christmas was a total bust because I didn’t get any presents; especially not during the late days of December before New Year’s Eve. It was disappointing indeed the fact my mother just left for work or something for full week until coming back for January 2022 was really taking so long. At least knowing she tried to make up for me by giving one item that originally supposed to be my Christmas present of 2021. That’s okay though. I’m still holding to it until I decided to show for my latest item reveal post for 2022 soon; while trying to get through other continuing topics on focus.

However for today’s reveal of 2022 will be this first one after my mom got something for me from 🕹GameStop. Just to reminder that it wasn’t my Christmas present I’ve gotten, but rather from last year of November while getting through 🦃Thanksgiving related stuff to check by. It used to be one of my past wishlist for my Nintendo Switch game picks that I’ve saving from years. Although this port version from the original Wii U game been released back in May 2018, but had new features such as a new playable character of Funky Kong that I’m gonna try it out during my gaming progress to share soon; just in case for other gaming progress that I’m also like to share as well like Super Mario 3D All-Stars for example. Hope you guys like my first item/game reveal of 2022 that I’m proud to own. I even flipped the back boxart cover to change from the original with the Donkey Kong Family to Funky Kong himself. Thought it funny to see what he’s trying to show his handsome side while going through an adventures to stop the evil vikings. 😎👍

Will you get the 30th Anniversary DBZ blurays?

No I will not and for several reasons.

The main being is that the Dragon Boxes from years ago look way better in quality than these blu-rays do. These blu-rays are falling into the same problem that the Orange Bricks had, in trying to remove grain, Funimation is cutting film off and this is more detrimental than it is good.

And we’re expected to pay $350 for a product that looks inferior to DVDs?

I’m sorry but no thanks.

Heck even the boxart doesn’t look as interesting as the box art from previous releases and the Goku figurine is hardly worth the money it’s being factored into. I can easily get a better Goku figurine at Gamestop for $10.

‘85 Again

It’s Christmas once again! It gets harder to feel holidays’ jolliness the more we grow up, yet some of everyone’s most vivid childhood memories are certainly Christmas centered. For a lot of kids (me included!), Christmas has always been one of the very few occasions throughout the year to get a new toy or gaming console: the choice was hard to make, and we had to base our preferences on other people’s experiences or advertisings: there still wasn’t Internet afterall. Most importantly, we had to enjoy our final gift! Even if we ended up with something mediocre because an advertising had fooled us, that was the only new toy we were gonna get for several months.

But, yeah, no other colorful vision will ever top blinking Christmas tree lights shining upon wrapping paper’s metallic sheets as we could finally uncover our presents: the joy of shaking the box, making wrappings scrunch and tear under our fingers, finally revealing what’s inside and recognizing our gift little by little from its cover. Just reading that sentence will send you back in time! Of course, Nintendo is among those companies that have made these kind of memories real, and vintage videos of kids screaming of joy in front of their new console have thrived all over the Internets as one of the most lightheartedly sappy memes.

This year we’ve gone back to the ‘80s and found the console every kid during the 8-bit games era wanted under their tree... well, let’s say we found a miniature version of it. xP

As much as I love small and compact consoles, I wasn’t that keen on getting a Nintendo Mini at the beginning; it was my little brother who got completely captured, asked it as a Christmas present and for the sake of proper Christmas memories, me and dad decided to get it for him. He wanted to get a deal on Amazon or Ebay, but the prices had already skyrocketed! We were almost giving up when we casually found a local Gamestop that was still selling it at its normal price! This little guy now sits in the livingroom, plugged into the TV, with two controllers always ready for everyone that wants to play.

The console itself is just so small and cute! It fits in one hand, so much so that it’s the same size as its controller! The boxart is deliciously retro and the game selection is varied and well-chosen, allowing hours of play for fans of every genre. The first game we’ve decided to play was, of course, Super Mario Bros. 3, which we completed in three days and helped us getting handy with the console’s main menu, options and save features.

NES Mini is a well-mixed cocktail of modern gaming and original, retro preservation and aims to get the best of both worlds without falling into over-nostalgic territory. First off, I’m partly glad the console works offline: after the Wii, 3DS and Wii U online shenanigans the Mini doesn’t waste time with chatrooms, screencap sharing and all that Mii bullshit, praising instead couch multiplayer modes (of course, what would you expect from a retrogaming collection? xP). The main menu, while still being something that is usually unheard of in older consoles, is minimal and mostly centered on the 30 available titles: in a way, it reminds me of Super Mario All Stars menu screen, and it even has a silly catchy tune. Above each game cover, the video options and game manuals are quickly available; I especially like the “CRT- view” video option, which transforms any modern screen into a vintage telly. Personally, I also think it’s the mode in which the games look best, and I’m not referring to any nostalgia-related factors: this option doesn’t distort the video’s proportions and avoids having those annoying “graphical bleedings” whenever your character moves. Hell, even the screen saver the Mini has is amusing to watch. Another great addition is the save feature: each game has four saving slots that stay in the console’s memory even after shutting it down. Each slot can be locked to avoid accidental overwritings and they also act as a safe “pause” button, appearing on the menu as floating mini-screens, with pixelly wings and all.

Of course, the save feature can be enabled in any part of the game and it obviously easies them up significantly if one abuses of it; on the other hand, if it’s used within reason, it’s a great way to bypass older problems that were caused by unexisting continues and terrible password screens. It’s also worth to note at this point that the featured games aren’t a “modern remastering of classic titles”, but they’ve been instead packed in their original state, flaws and all! This pretty much makes it the most legit/accurate NES emulator available; the only update I’ve noticed is the swap between Mike Tyson and Mr. Dream in Punch Out!, but that actually happened during a later release of the game so it’s still legit.

With that said, I’ve also found some flaws, like...

The cables are pitifully short, especially the controller ones. It’s probably one of those things that have been drilled deep into my skull as a kid, but the cables force the player to sit right in front of the screen and I’m really not fond of staying so close to the TV; even if I found a longer HDMI cable, the console still needs to be powered by the AC adaptor (speaking of which, the adaptor isn’t included in European boxes. What’s up with that? Do they expect it to run on batteries?) and therefore can’t move from under the TV set; in some occasions, we’ve risked of pulling the poor Mini off the coffee table because we were moving our controllers with too much enthusiasm!

It’s also too bad that the manual (which you see in my third picture) is in boring greyscale and only talks about the console itself without mentioning the games in it; while it’s true that the original Game Boy booklets are similar, I do miss rich manuals with coloured graphics and descriptions and the Mini, with its 30 titles, could have managed to get a nice looking book!

As for the main complaint about it (and the previously mentioned reason why I wasn’t very keen on getting a Mini once advertisings started appearing on the Net): 30 games are undoubtly a considerable amount, but between me and my brother we’ll eventually complete all of them. Gee, considering that my boyfriend managed to beat Punch Out in just a day when he stayed for the holidays, it doesn’t seem that it’ll take long, either. And the main flaw of the Mini is that... it’s just those games! It’s a pity that a cartridge-based console with such a rich library gets a “revamp” that wasn’t designed to load additional games, not even in the future; the lid that is supposed to “open” in the original NES is a sealed, solid piece in the Mini, meaning that there are never going to be additional “cards” to buy and load, and the fact that it lacks internet connections means that customers will never be able to get new games in an online shop. One could argue that a lot of NES games are too flawed to be worth re-releasing or made by now-defunct third party companies, but I can’t believe that among hundreds of titles only 30 of them were “good enough”.

It’s obvious that Nintendo is aiming at non-updatable consoles in order to sell newer units in the near future (some people are already mentioning a SNES Mini?), but I think that “booster pack”-like carts or SDs would’ve worked just as well: maybe small collections of 5 or 10 games each, divided by genre or theme. Funny thing is, pretty much every person that saw the console (even my dad, go figure) wondered why Nintendo didn’t do anything like that, so it’s not just a personal impression. NOE, hire me :V Surely, modders are already on their way: I’ve heard of people screwing the Mini open and discovering that it’s theorically very simple to add ROMs in it, so there’s eventually going to be a way to extend its library.

Until that, well... it’s still an enjoyable game; its design is cute and very portable even for a home console, it comes packed with good classics and in the end, who doesn’t want to find a NES under their tree?

This was before I actually new anything about strategy (like 3rd/4th grade) or even how to swap out pokemon, but I remember running through the whole game with just my trusty Swampert, up until the Elite Four beat my unbalanced ass ; u ;
