As the Council left the hall, Cassian gave a last look around. Azriel gave him a silent apology and waited for him and Rhys at the door.

"Let's go to my chambers. I need a second breakfast, this time with some wine." Rhys suggested. "It's been a while, Cass." The Illyrian prince patted his shoulder, and Cassian returned the friendly gesture. "A rough start, but things will start to go smoothly soon." He and Az shared a look. "Trust me."

In their walk, the Captain of the city guard tried to explain himself. "We all have interests of our own to look after, you know that better than any of us."

Cassian wasn't hurt, and he tried to explain that to Azriel. Only surprised, for his friend hadn't voiced his worries to him beforehand. "Just warn me next time, will you?"

With a half smile, Az stopped his walk and extended his hand to him. "Sure. I'll be more talkative when I consider the information to be worth your time." Cassian shook his friend's hand, sealing what he could only guess was an alliance. His first official one in the castle. "Game on."

The three of them separated somewhere in the infinite hallways between the Council room and the Prince's. Cassian trusted them as friends, of course. They had gone through so much together, Cassian would put his very own life in the line for them. But after this first encounter where all three of them made their points of view clear as people in power, he didn't deem it wise to leave his papers within their reach.

The General knew he had made the right call when Azriel followed suit, suggesting they all met at Rhysand's chambers in half an hour.

"I need to set some points for the guards before the next shift starts." He explained, not caring if Rhys and Cassian himself smelled the half-truth or not. Which they did.

Rhys sighed with exasperation. "Sure, both of you. Go plot your little shenanigans and meet me there."

They left him there, since both the Captain and the General's rooms were in the same direction. On their way, his friend told him a little about the Lords and Ladies, and about their superficial scheming. They liked to feel smart by trying to betray each other in the Council meetings just for the sake of it. For fun. They rarely cared enough to actually block important decisions in a vote, though. They had mastered an art of their own creation, which consisted on taking regular gossip, and worsening it. Nothing to worry about.

Minutes later, as the General walked alone the final stretch to his rooms, he understood what Azriel meant.

A guard that should have been... well, guarding a door, was instead peaking his head through an open slit. He wore the silver brooch of the Crown's personal guard, so Cassian made sure to silence his steps, make himself invisible to the traitor. A few more strides, and Cassian could identify the victims of the spying.

"Never lie to me like that again."

He would recognize that whispered scream anywhere, but specially so close now to the half-closed door.

"It wasn't my intention, my dear. I didn't have time to warn you. But I can explain."

He made sure his last two steps were audible. As if struck by lightning, the guard straightened his posture and became paralyzed when he realized who had caught him in the act. Putting his strong arm around the man, Cassian took the knob, his hazel eyes never leaving the guard's, and closed the wooden door with a slam

"You better." Her voice at the other side of the wall had a threatening edge, but she didn't sound worried, only angry at her husband, as her words were finally muted and the conversation between Lord Balthasar and the Princess became truly private.

"Name." He demanded.

The man didn't try to fight his authority. He gave him both his name, and then his rank, when Cassian asked. He had been assigned the task of guarding the Lord since his arrival, had been in the position for less than two weeks. Cassian would speak to Azriel directly to make sure he never stepped into the castle again.

As the Queen's pupil, Rhysand's chambers were filled with every luxury a Prince's room would have. The balcony had one of the most beautiful views one could get in the castle. Lush and green, the foliage of the King's forest called for attention in the horizon, in between the mountains.

The sun was bright up in the sky, not a cloud in sight. And somewhere in the gardens, a skilled flutist played loud enough that the melody could be heard from their seats outside.

"Maybe we are cursed." He was saying to them. "Something must have happened twenty years ago in Illyria, and that's why we are all fucked."

Azriel grinned and ate some grapes. "We are fuck-less, which is the whole problem."

"Are we, though?" Cassian asked. "Or is it just me? Because with Nesta's wedding and all the celebrations, Rhys got to see Princess Feyre. Therefore, he's good, though at my expenses." His friend didn't even try to contain his satisfied expression. He was leaning back in his chair. "And I don't know what you have going on with Nesta's maiden, but I sense that I'm the only one in a position to complain right now."

At that, Rhysand sat straight, an eyebrow arched. "Wait, Emerie?"

Cassian hushed him. Although in his chambers, they were still in the open. If the music could be heard from up there, their gossiping could certainly be heard from the gardens, if they weren't careful enough. And Cassian now knew that not even the highest-ranked people ─specially not the highest-ranked people─ were safe from intrusive ears.

"Not Emerie." Azriel answered. "Nor the other one." He added before a very smiley Rhysand could push it further. "Cassian has just arrived to the castle and doesn't know what's going on after so long."

"It feels like it, that's for sure." He finished his glass of water. No alcohol for him until he finished the job at the end of the week. "Do you think it's possible that Nesta and him have bonded already?"

The way Lord Balthazar addressed her and how little offended Nesta had been at that still clouded his thoughts. Despite having been the one forcing himself out of their marital fight, he would sell every possession to know what those two had going on. If she was okay. If she was safe at all.

Rhysand rolled his eyes at him with absolutely no discretion. "Do you think it's possible for you to not mention her for five minutes?"

It was Azriel who came to his defense. Apparently he still had it in himself to have his back. "Oh, shut up, Rhys. I have been putting up with the same shit from you, whining about Feyre for years."

For the wedding that, by all accounts, everyone but Nesta and him knew would take place, Princess Feyre had come back home, along with Rhysand's mother and little sister. Cassian knew it was hard for them as well. Each living in the other's court, meeting on counted occasions, all spread through the year. Cassian knew the yearning, the longing, they experienced was bigger with each season that passed by, yet their future together was almost guaranteed.

One day, the Illyrian prince and the youngest princess from the Archeron family would be wed, finally sealing the alliance between kingdoms and formalizing the truce born 20 years ago.

For Azriel and him, that alliance had meant a chance at survival. It had been a lifeline, tended to them and a few more. The reason was unknown, but Cassian and his brother had taken it and refused to let go. They knew people like them hardly ever got an opportunity like the one they had been given by the Illyrian Queen, and had promised to each other they would take it and succeed. Against all odds, the two bastards would exceed everyone's expectations.

It had been a long journey that was far from over, but they all had come so far, it was sweet to look back and remember where they came from.

"Tell me about Emerie. How is she?" His thoughts inevitably led him to her.

His two friends shared a glance, deciding who would be the one breaking some sort of devastating news to him. But what he heard was far from devastating. She seemed to be doing great.

"It took her a while to find her place, but she's been Nesta's maid for a few years now." Rhys explained. "She went back to Illyria for a while when Nesta left for Kyrlan Fort. But she's back, and as far as I know, she is truly happy here."

Cassian couldn't hold his relief at the words. That girl had gone through so much even before she was capable of processing the atrocities she witnessed, happiness felt short for what she deserved.

"Do her and Nesta get along well?"

"Oh Gods, here we go..." Rhys sip his wine and made his exasperation clear at the mention of a certain woman.

"You should go find her and ask her yourself." Azriel suggested at the same time.

Cassian ignored the first and shook his head at the latter, not too convinced. So many years had passed since the last time they had talked. "She probably doesn't even remember me."

Another glare at each other.

Azriel gave him a half smile, but Cassian noticed the corner of his lips tugging his smile wider. The guard resisted them, though, and that grin was all he got from his friend. "Who knows, maybe you should give it a try."

Thank you for sending these two ships, they're perfect parallels to each other. They're mlm and wlw solidarity at it's finest.

Barmine

I AM VERY GLAD I CAME UP WITH THIS SHIP BECAUSE IT BRINGS ME SOOOO MUCH JOY.

I can't even explain why, it's just fun "moronsexual is in love with a himbo and is hating it" shenanigans. They're serotonin generators and it's the best.

BUT, there's also the small bit of possible enemies to lovers, maybe Carmine'd be conflicted about having a massive crush on the prosecutor trying to but his sister to death, then realize Barnham's really just being tricked by a system that's told him he'd doing the right thing.

They probably wouldn't have much story impact, but I still love them so much.

Evespella

I interact with Evespella like I do Narumistsu, I see how gay they are, I get swept up in it, I see how obvious it is and I need it to be canon, but I don't really think about it much afterwards.

Regardless, they're SO gay and sad and angsty I care them greatly. They've even got childhood best friends, which is my secret weakness. Peak galpals.

rika route where you go into the past before you meet the RFA, before she meets V, and you meet her and date her and become girlfriends with her where you urge her to visit a psychiatrist and it’s a healthy relationship where you support each other and acknowledge each other’s flaws and help each other out with them

the subplot is that you form the RFA together with your beautiful girlfriend rika and try to recruit the rowdy ragtag group of the RFA members into the group while dealing with their shenanigans and open a party together

also no galpals.

"#too bad anne just got a new galpal" I was pleased by the implication that they were leaving Max open--Max was leaving herself open--for a possible future. And if we follow up on that, on what history tells us happens to Jack and Mary and Anne--that perhaps Anne will find her way back to Max after all. (this is my headcanon please do not disturb it ;))

I’m still a little unsure of where I stand on everything. all I know is that my headcanon of the last however many years is in tatters. if I’m being 100% truthful to myself I never fully believed Max was Mary Read or that she would ever go on to become that historical seagoing pirate version of her. but I was definitely 100% invested in the idea that the show had borrowed the Mary/Anne/Jack dynamic to write Max/Anne/Jackand that for all intents and purposes Max was the show’s ~Mary.so all I wanted from the ending was for it to allow me to continue thinking Max is and always would remain the third point of the M/Anne/Jack triangle.

I actually really love that Max became queen of Nassau. it’s perfect. I can’t lie though, the closer we got to the possibility of her ending up with nothing the more I did want to see her sail away with Anne and Jack to assume the role of authentic Mary Read. but that was just my general fondness for pirate lore coming out and because I’m still waiting for somebody to put the story of those three on my screen. I would have been perfectly content to mix my headcanon with show canon and settle for an ending which met somewhere in the middle. say… the three of them getting both Nassau and their piratey shenanigans, with Max running one side from that fucking chair while Anne and Jack do the heavy lifting on the sly. and for the sake of my desperation to see it–all done in a way which left a little window through which maybe one day Max could get on a ship herself. I wasn’t after much really. it’s what we saw being the case in earlier seasons and it’s how the show did pretty much finish in fact. I thought I’d gotten exactly what I wanted. but then the name confirmation on Mary came and ruined it somewhat.

it still works if you really want it to, you just adopt the idea of the trio becoming a quartet and that Mary, Anne and Jack go off to do the piracy then return to Nassau and Max with the spoils or whatever. but I think I’m too well versed in the history books to go with that. Mary pushes Max out for me. both in regards to the M/Anne/Jack triangleand Max/Anne. but I can see why some would think differently and not be bothered at all by Mary’s introduction. it’s just that it is very obvious to me that she had that cameo purely to give a nod to history and within that history there is no ‘Max’ in the story of Mary/Anne/Jack.
