I finished my first blind run of DigiSurvive!!
Being a blind run I, really avoided looking at my karma stats even until the end of the game (lol) but upon further snooping, I apparently the Moral ending so spoilers ahead (with images too, be warned)
I actually got a happy ending?! All things considered. Definitely reminisce a LOT from the original DigiAdventure (down to fighting in the villain's space warp thing...and especially everyone happily returning to their world leaving their Digimons behind) but I'll, leave my full onions on that premise for my ""full thoughts"" review-ish another day.
Since it's a happy ending of course the latter half is not as crazy as the first half and does have the cliche shounen ending trope of "why we should save the world because not everyone is evil" and power of friendship thing, but eh, I DON'T CARE. It was still beautiful and I'm just happy that everyone...well, survived, regardless ;_;
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The only criticism I have is that since its borrowing a lot from Adventures, (with some 02 and Tamers here and there) some of the characters sadly doesn't feel as....fleshed out in comparison? I think that's to be answered mostly when I played other routes. But I still think Some things in this specific route could use some more...time? Renamon's death was too short-lived to make an impact, and while the interactions between the mons and their tamers were good, I'm not sure if anyone would easily buy them since 50% of them does feel boiled down as "I did this because I'm your destinied partner" and doesn't have the buildup like say, the original Adventures in comparison. Honestly that buildup between friendship is what makes the ending to the OG Adventures so impactful, man :^)
...I said that, and I thought I wouldn't be as sad with the ending if they pulled the same thing as Adventures with the whole "farewell with your mons for now and see them again someday" thing (which they did) but I still ended up tearing up a bit :^) so yeah.
I'm honestly glad that they used a video game format like this to utilize multiple endings and character deaths, etc, it really raises how high the stake the original Adventures could be if they went full horror with it LOL.
I'm definitely saving my full thoughts on the game once I played all the routes but I'm 100% happy I got this game !! I love Z/ero Escape games and I love hobbyani/moncolles, and Digimon is the few existing franchises I know can make this combination of two of my fav type of games work! A sequel with an actual murder game someday, mayhaps? Who knows.
Now I'm just gonna...try finish other routes with less stalling as I could since I Really want to talk more about this game but I don't want to risk getting spoiled by doing that haha.
PS. The ending song being Miyuki's song...that also turned out to have the same instrumentals as the intro music, that was a beautiful touch...
Edit: P.PS. The game also gave me this note btw. "You didn't die but if only you befriended that emo mf smh nobody would've been killed"

デジモンサヴァイブ呼称表 - Digimon Survive Appellation Tables
I’m currently compiling a Digimon Survive appellation tables for the main characters—basically a set of tables containing information about how characters refer to themselves (pronouns) and how they address each other in Japanese (obviously, spoilers warning entail). As you might know already, language usage in Japan is largely dictated by social dynamics (mostly the social hierarchy or what’s known in Japan as “jouge kankei”/上下関係) due to Japanese culture focusing heavily on social harmony and collectivism. Thus, knowing and understanding how the characters refer to themselves and one another can tell us a lot about how they view themselves and their relationships. More explanation under the cut because there are potential spoilers.
First and foremost, if you aren’t already familiar with how Japanese pronouns and honorifics work and what the nuances of each pronoun/honorific suffix carry, these pages are good primers on understanding them:
Wikipedia pages on Japanese pronouns and honorifics
TV Tropes pages on Japanese pronouns and honorifics
Because Digimon Survive is quite a massive game in terms of text content and that the way characters refer to each other can change a lot throughout the game (most of the time due to the change in relationship dynamic), it can be quite a challenge to make these tables exhaustive, but I’m trying my best to include everything that I find. So far, there are characters who haven’t called some other characters by their names. For those cases, I infer the way they address the other characters from how they usually address characters of similar positions, and I indicate them with coloring the font blue.
For the Kemonogamis, pronouns sometimes change throughout evolutions and different “iterations” of characters—Story!Plutomon (Aoi and Labramon’s fusion) and Battle!Plutomon (Labramon’s evolved form) refer to themselves with the same pronoun, but different stylizations. For cases like that, I indicate the story version of the pronouns with red font color. Darker blue font color means I know how what the pronouns are from the characters’ battle lines, but don’t know how they’re written.
Aside from pronouns and honorific suffixes, politeness can also be expressed with grammar. Some characters speak to other specific characters (usually those who are older and/or higher in the hierarchy than them) in what is known as the polite language (teineigo/丁寧語), and that’s indicated with green cells. The darker the green is, the more consistently the polite language is used to said addressee.
With all of that said, I want to point out some interesting things I’ve found about Survive characters’ language usage:
The majority of the Kemonogamis share the same first-person pronoun with their human partners (just sometimes with different stylizations), with some exceptions: Shakomon-Miu, Kunemon-Ryou (because Kunemon can’t speak), and Garurumon-Akiharu. However, Garurumon (as Gabumon) used to share the same pronoun as young!Haru, which is “boku” written in hiragana—which is usually used by very young boys when written in hiragana (hiragana gives a very childlike feel to it).
Shakomon may not share the same pronoun as Miu, but she calls Kaito “Oniichan”, something other Kemonogamis don’t do because they just refer to the kids with their names without any honorifics. On the topic of this, the Kemonogamis not using honorifics might be a way for Survive to show how all of this language stuff is a learned human behavior, as Kemonogamis are meant to be the kids’ true, purest selves.
Takuma, Aoi, and Shuuji being particularly conscious of their social standings as shown in their usage of language isn’t very surprising considering their personalities (and what we know about their upbringing), but Minoru surprisingly seems to also be conscious about his position and actually adheres to the “correct” language usage most of the time despite his somewhat carefree personality. A friend pointed out how he’s always so quick to go to look up to his seniors, so it checks for him to properly address his seniors and elders (except maybe Ryou, who he teases a lot).
Saki and Miu aren’t particularly polite with her language usage, but at least they aren’t like Kaito or Ryou who seem to have no care about social hierarchy whatsoever.
In relation to the two points above, I like to think of Aoi, Shuuji, and Saki as being “Harmony-adjacent”; Kaito, Ryou, and Miu as being “Wrathful-adjacent”; and Minoru as being “Moral-adjacent”; with Saki and Miu falling somewhere in the middle of the Harmony vs. Wrathful spectrum. Most of the time this aligns with how they communicate actually!
I think it’s cute how Aoi and Shuuji call Jijimon “Jijimon-san” and constantly use polite language to him (even when Shuuji is still untrusting of him).
On the topic of Shuuji, you might notice that both Shuuji, Professor, and Aoi refer to almost everyone (or just the boys specifically in the case of Aoi) younger than them with “-kun”. However, there’s a difference in the nuance on how the “-kun” is written. Professor and Aoi use くん, which is informal and feels more familiar, usually used to address men younger than the speaker, but can also be used for girls. Shuuji, on the other hand, uses 君—which is ironically more distant, used by seniors/superiors to address their juniors/inferiors in settings like school or workplace. Given Shuuji’s position as the chaperone, it’s appropriate—I just think it’s funny that Professor (who’s much older) would use something that feels friendlier than Shuuji (I need to check how Jou’s “-kun” is written, because he does call the other kids with “-kun” and I think Shuuji doing that is meant to be a throwback to Jou).
The way Ryou and Saki (and Minoru too, to a lesser extent) call their parents is particularly affectionate that you can tell that they grew up in a warm family (we do know, though, that Minoru’s parents are divorced). On the other hand, Shuuji speaks to his father strictly in polite language, which is both a strange and rare thing to do—unless you come from a distinguished family (with the way Shuuji obsesses about honoring his family name, it checks actually). I talked more about it here.
Both Shuuji and Ryou seem to refuse calling their partners with their names until their respective character development hits in Truthful. A somewhat unknown fact about Japanese is that calling someone else with pronouns when you know their name can be considered insulting (and both of them use rude pronouns to refer to their partners too; particularly noticeable with Shuuji who’s usually relatively polite).
Wendimon speaks strictly in katakana. This kind of stylization is used to evoke an alien and uneasy feeling of the speaker. Also, he only gained the ability to speak after he devoured Shuuji. Make of it what you will.
I might add more if I notice more interesting stuff!

a boy and his weird dog for your consideration
~
THIS ONE KILLS ME because it's after such a happy emotional moment, where Yamato is touched that Gabumon took off his fur coat to keep him warm and ended up getting sick himself and it's how he slowly realizes that Gabumon cares for him besides the "duty" of protecting him because he can evolve into a stronger Digimon and Yamato thanks him with a wide smile
AND THEN WE IMMEDIATELY GET THESE

happy holidays to @noctilucentstorm ! i hope that you have a wonderful festive season, and that you like this little gift :) (if you have AO3, lmk so i can gift it to you!)
characters: sora/yamato
summary: unexpectedly, sora finds common ground with yamato. also, gift giving is nerve-wracking.
a/n: this is my first time writing sorato. i apologize for any mischaracterization! also on AO3 and FFN !
Sora smelled faintly of flowers.
There had been a time when she despised anything with petals. Her mother toiled away with stems, arranging them with such precise care that Sora couldn’t contain her jealousy. Flowers sat mockingly on flat surfaces, staring up at her with unseeing eyes inside crystal vases.
Her mother’s flowers were poised and perfect; her mother’s flowers were everything she wasn’t.
Initially, Sora fought against it, fought against her mother’s wishes and plans with such a ferocity that it scared her. Often, her outbursts left her with the bitter feeling of regret simmering in her stomach. No matter how hard she tried to reign in her anger and disappointment, the tilt of her mother’s eyebrow or shift in her voice could send Sora’s mood spiraling and spewing, destroying everything in its path.
Despite the blood bath and survival, the Digital World had given Sora a reprieve. For a fleeting moment, she was able to shift her focus from her mother’s expectations to something more substantial. In the Digital World, people depended on her. Biyomon needed her in a way her mother never did. Months seemed to pass them by, full of learning and growing and friendship. At first, she couldn’t understand the others’ want to go home. This new world offered no preconceived expectations or responsibilities. As she laid underneath the stars, she would listen to the steady breathing of her friends. The stars twinkled from up above, the familiarity squeezing at her heart strings until she came to her senses.
Going home meant leaving Biyomon, and Sora refused to picture her life without her. She didn’t want to go home to her mother’s sour words and cold heart. But, the tides of the Digital World were shifting, and Sora was worried that she would be swept away.
The fantasy world they found themselves in turned sour quickly.  An unfamiliar sadness grew underneath her ribcage, straining against the pounding of her heart. As the excitement of the Digital World wore off, Sora’s sadness only grew. At points, it felt all consuming, like an impenetrable wall that surrounded her. With her other friends focused on the task at hand, slipping away had become easy. Sora felt an odd sort of company in her sadness, wrapping it around her shoulders in a vain effort to shield herself.
If she were one of her mother’s flowers, her petals would perpetually droop towards the ground.
At first, she thought that she was the only one to experience the overwhelming, stifling sort of loneliness.
That was, until. Yamato came into the picture.
Like all boys her age, Yamato was rambunctious, moody, and slightly smelly. The Digital World had equipped itself with digital friends, but had yet to install hygiene products. Despite the changes around them, Yamato always tried his best to remain calm. Most times, he was good at it.
Sora couldn’t help but to feel jealous of him. With a younger brother, there was always someone to need him, to want him around. Her mother only cared for her out of obligation, Sora was sure. Yamato had Takeru, who would love him regardless.
Despite being related to the personification of sunshine, Yamato, too, carried a deep sadness within. It was something only another sad person could recognize - the slight curve of the mouth, nails bitten short and raw. Sora could see the pinched look on his face whenever Takeru chose Taichi to hang out with, or when Gabumon pressed too hard on a sensitive subject. From afar, she allowed her heart to hurt for him, but didn’t dare to come too close.
Only once their adventure was over, their personal dark caverns conquered, did she muster up the courage to talk to him. In the real world, her inbox overflowed with emails and inside jokes. More often, Yamato would attach snippets of lyrics of songs he was working on, seeking her advice or appreciation.
It had been years since their first adventure, but Sora’s feelings grew with every chord he played on his hand-me-down guitar and flick of his overgrown hair.
-
The wind bit at her cheeks, staining them a rosy pink. December had arrived in a flurry of white, her snow boots doing little to fight off the chill. Wistfully, she thought back to that summer years ago when heat came in surplus.
Her fingers fidgeted anxiously in her mittens as she walked down the street. The box, wrapped precisely and carefully in green wrapping paper, seemed to weigh her down.
It had taken three international calls to America and countless hours to decide what to get him. Mimi had been little help, her suggestions ranging from outrageous to downright scandalous. But Mimi’s exuberance gave her strength, and eventually, Sora was able to find the perfect gift. She was excited for him to open it, but anticipated his smile most of all.
An address glittered up from the screen of her phone. Echoes of chords and microphone feedback reverberated from within a nondescript building.
Hordes of teenage girls stood outside in the cold, their chatter keeping Sora company as she made her way towards the back of the building. A few of the girls cast Sora an odd glance, but she let it roll off her shoulders. Her mother’s tough critiques had thickened her skin; petty drama could no longer touch her.
The butterflies in her stomach fluttered about as she rounded the corner. From above, a bird seemingly sang a melody against the clashing of the drums.
Tentatively, she knocked against the back door. With the collective noise from the instruments, she wasn’t sure that anyone would hear her, but after a moment, the rusty hinges creaked open.
Amber eyes gazed into shocked blue ones, another flush of embarrassment coloring Sora’s cheeks.
Late afternoon sunlight reflected off Yamato’s blond tresses. In most ways, it reminded her of their summers spent together, and the way his hair would shine in front of the campfire.
“Hey,” she managed after a breathless moment.
“Hey.”
From behind him, the drummer still clamored away while two other boys chased each other around with a dirty sock.
“It seems like band practice is going well.”  Sora struggled to hide her grin for Yamato’s sake, but mirth shone in his eyes.
“The Crusty Sock of Shota is our band bonding activity before every show. Are you sure you don’t want to play? It’s absolutely riveting.”
The crowd outside of the venue’s door seemed to grow larger by the minute. A light breeze coaxed a chill up Sora’s spine.
In the silence that stretched between them, Yamato’s gaze shifted towards the box in Sora’s hands. A pair of mittens curled around it almost protectively. Anxiety bubbled up in Sora’s stomach; she had never felt so invested in a gift before.
“I, uh,” her throat seemed to close up. Despite all of the time they’ve spent together, a strange sort of tension bubbled between them. Sora stood on the edge of something palpable, but struggled to form the words.
Patiently, Yamato stood in place. Having a younger brother prepared him to wait out whichever storm Sora was battling. Still, the corners of his lips twitched upwards at the way her eyebrows scrunched together. The tag on the present stated his name in a careful, yet elegant, font, but Yamato remained silent.
He knew that Sora had the courage to get whatever was resting heavily on her chest out in the open without his help.
“I bought you something for, you know, Christmas.” The wind blew wisps of Sora’s auburn hair around her rosy cheeks. Her hands quivered as she thrust the box towards Yamato, who accepted it with a flush of his own.
“You didn’t have to get me anything,” he insisted. Yamato’s voice was hushed against the ruckus of his bandmates in the background. “I haven’t had time to do any shopping with everything going on.”
Sora glanced up into his crystal blue eyes, her own anxiety forgotten. “You didn’t have to get me a gift! Besides, you’re the only person besides my parents that I’ve gotten anything for at all.”
In the heat of the moment, the connotation of her declaration fell onto deaf ears.
Only once the wind died down and the pair stared at each other for a moment longer did Sora feel the warmth of embarrassment crawl up past her scarf.
A tentative smile played on the corners of Yamato’s lips, but any retort that bubbled in his throat died out as soon as Sora averted her gaze.
“Thank you,” he nearly whispered.
With a light flush, Yamato leaned closer, his eyes impossibly blue against the drab building. For a moment, his face hovered next to hers, his breath ghosting over Sora’s chilled cheek. “You smell kind of like a rose.”
His voice was no louder than a whisper, as if he was afraid to break the gentle tension that surmounted the space between them.
Sora didn’t fight the blush that bloomed on her cheeks. His palm found her mitten, squeezing lightly. He seemed to know that speaking would overwhelm her, instead opting to press his chapped lips against her warm cheek.
Silently, Yamato slipped back into the bustling building, the twang of a guitar escaping into the winter air.
Alone, Sora smiled to herself. The prettiest flower was the one that bloomed in adversity, she mused.

Monster Replays The Truthful Route: Prologue
Warning: Spoilers for Digimon Survive under the cut. Read at your own risk.
In case you're not familiar with this blog, I've recently finished the Harmony route of Digimon Survive, meaning that I've played every route. I didn't want my final playthrough to over half the cast dead, so I've decided to replay the Truthful route, fully knowing what happens.
Thoughts:
The art for Gabumon and Renamon's first appearance honestly look very cool, especially Gabumon.
I find it funny how in the flashback, Haru and Miyuki are just referred to as 'Boy' and 'Girl'. With other characters, they either have a '???' or a word that describes them (e.g. 'Spirited Boy'), but with these two, their just 'Boy' and 'Girl', even after they refer to each other as their actual names. LMFAO
I love the animated short at the beginning. If I didn't know any better, I'd think it would be a trailer for an actual anime.
Saki: Wow, you're such a charmer. No wonder all the girls love you.
Ryo: Oh, shut up.
Lmao, I love these two.
Miyuki's singing is very, very pretty.
I'm genuinely curious if the school Takuma and co. camp at is based on a real place.
I imagine Shuuji's lines being dubbed over by SammyClassicSonicFan.
Something I didn't notice before is that Takuma mentions that Shuuji is an alumnus of Aoi's school.
Saki: Clearly you're not the type to be left to your own devices.
If you really think about it, this kinda feels like foreshadowing.
I'll never get tired of Ryo and Saki's dynamic.
Lesbian much, Aoi?
Aoi: All of us need to work together
Me: Okay, as long as you don't try to absorb the entire goddamn planet for the sake of Harmony™.
I love the way Miu's voice actress delivers her lines. It definitely feels like Miu's exaggerating and being super dramatic.
I love how Kaito's description of Miu is just completely inaccurate. At the same time, it also kinda hurts, especially after playing the Harmony route.
*it starts snowing* What is this, Digimon Adventure?
Can't believe there was a period in my life where I thought getting Harmony karma was a GOOD thing.
Minoru: The ones that worship the lewd stuff are the best!
Ah, so it appears that Minoru and I share a braincell *shot*
Honestly, it took me a while to notice that the Professor was wearing glasses in the prologue, but then lost them in the Kemonogami World.
I like how Shuuji's just randomly staring at a stone wall. Not even the mural, just a stone wall.
THE PROFESSOR SAID AGUMON! W00T!
Aoi: A pervert? On a MOUNTAIN?!
Of course, everybody knows that perverts can be found anywhere except in high altitudes!
Ryo's dialogue: Oh jeez, oh boy...
Ryo's voice: uwrraarAH!
The intro is very, very pretty. Plus, it definitely fits the vibe of the game well.
Takuma: *says bingo ONCE*
Me: Miyako Inoue? Is that you?
KOROMON WHY ARE YOU SO PRECIOUS
Takuma: My point is that I'm not a kid!
Koromon: Why not?! You seem to be pretty childish to me!
BUUURRRRRNNN
What's funny about NG+, especially early on in the game is that while most of the enemies are Rookie or Champion level, I can just evolve straight to Mega and oneshot everybody. It's especially funny if it's after the Kemonogami just evolved in the cutscene before the fight lol
I love how Takuma and Agumon share -2 braincells lmao
Takuma says that he and the others probably accidentally broke a seal on the shrine that released the Kemonogami. While that's obviously not what really happened, I still think that'd make for a good premise for a Digimon story, whether an anime or a video game.
This concludes my thoughts on the prologue, and onto Part 1 I go!

Identifying with Makoto Niijima on a spiritual level
In honor of the birthday girl today: I'm playing Persona 5 for the first time and hooo boy I found that Makoto and I are so alike it's kind of scary.
-expected to conform to the conservative nature and meet high standards imposed by Asian culture and society
-very studious and diligent about her schoolwork to the point of being out of touch with her peers (I have to ask my friends to take me to clubs, raves, breweries, etc when I'd otherwise never have the time or interest to do when I was a student)
-an honors student (I was in honors college and got accepted to medical school)
-has short hair
-practices aikido (I practiced Tae Kwon Do)
-her dad died 3 years before the game's events (my dad died 3 years ago as of this post)
-obsessed with Buchimaru since she was a kid (I've been obsessed with Gabumon from Digimon since the 90s)
-half her room is occupied with books
-almost never seen without a notebook to study from (I went everywhere studying T^T)
-her shelves have dense law textbooks along with shoujo manga (I keep textbooks on anesthesiology, anatomy, and neuroscience as well as rows of my favorite manga series)
But there are also many ways where we're different:
-the younger sister (I'm the older one)
-the student council president (I'm too shy to take on any leadership role)
-never bothered with video games until recently (I've played games for as long as I can remember)
-wants a career in law enforcement (I have a career in medicine)
-rocks a motorcycle Persona (I've seen too many gnarly injuries and deaths from motorcycle accidents in the ER (including a case of internal decapitation) to consider riding one myself)
I can see why she's a fan-favorite, especially among the primary Japanese audience. The proof is in the Japan and southeast Asia popularity polls; I think Makoto's character arc resonates with a lot of us Asians who face significant stress and pressure from our families and society to be conforming, well-behaved overachievers. For us Asian girls especially, at least from my experience, having masculine interests and tendencies are frowned upon. Makoto casting off expectations and the nice girl facade, releasing and embracing her tough rebellious side, was so empowering. I love that she's an honors student who's serious about her studies, yet also an awkward dork who loves her panda merch and motorbikes and gangster movies. She makes me, the female Asian anesthetist with a big shoulder tattoo and a lifelong love for Pokemon, Digimon and superhero movies, feel seen. I'm so glad that a character like Makoto exists. Happy birthday, Queen/best girl.

Clearly, you've talked a lot about Digimon (the show) characters. But just like pokemon, I've been wondering, do you have a favorite Digimon?
Seeing how Yamato is my favourite character, and how watching the show now I was able to understand and appreciate many more things than I did as a kid, my knee-jerk reaction answer would be Gabumon... But I can't help admitting that as a kid, Patamon was my favourite.
Tumblr media
I don't know, it's probably because when I first watched Digimon I was Takeru's age, so it was him and Patamon that I related the most to and felt the closest to (even though Yamato was still the Blorbo even back then). I mean, he was cute and sweet and didn't understand why people could be mean and he was super close with Takeru and they were an adorable duo then he turned into a MOTHERFUCKING OP ANGEL AND SAVED EVERYONE'S ASSES BY SACRIFICING HIMSELF WHILE PROMISING TAKERU HE WILL RETURN TO HIM and like
And those feelings have carried through to today, so to this day I still have an appreciation for this flying hamster that turns into a mf OP angel, so big that I have to choose him over Best Boi Gabumon. Tailmon comes close third because cat.

In your headcanon, when the Digidestined married their spouses, while couples had a Western-style wedding? Which couples had a Japanese-style wedding? And which couple just went to the ward office and filled out the paperwork?
Oh boy, wedding headcanons! Fun~ Let's see.
Yamato and Sora: Traditional Shinto temple wedding, as expected of the daughter of an iemoto and a Japanese folklore professor. Yamato and Sora decide on that of their own accord, though, as they like the idea of a more private and spiritual ceremony. I do headcanon that they marry after both their kids are born, so it's not all that traditional! The kids are a bit small for the ceremony itself, but they have free rein of the reception and get photos with their parents in the traditional wedding garb. Yamato and Sora get just a little misty eyed during the day, but Gabumon, Piyomon and Takeru all cry full on tears of joy at various points.
Ken and Miyako: Irreligious western-style wedding in a banquet hall. It's the wedding of Miyako's wildest childhood dreams, with Ken indulging her every request and only gently suggesting alternatives when her dreams were a bit too lofty. Every alternative is happily approved and rewarded with a kiss on the cheek. Miyako is a bit of a nervous wreck the morning of, but Hawkmon, Mimi and her sisters all give her a really good pep talk, and the wedding itself goes without a hitch.
Taichi: Chapel wedding and reception. Taichi really rocks that white tux and makes bowties look good. Yamato gives an amazing speech during the reception that makes Taichi want to bury himself in the ground from embarrassment but also very grateful for Yamato's friendship.
Koushirou: Fills out paperwork at the ward office because even now, being the center of attention is not his favorite (and his significant other feels about the same). His and his SO's parents serve as witnesses, and naturally Tentomon is also in attendance crying his sweet little bug eyes out, though he's not quite a legal witness - they're still workshopping the regulations on that by the time Koushirou gets married.
Jou: The only Kido brother to have a Shinto temple wedding. Jou and his significant other are happy enough to just fill out paperwork, but they have the full ceremony and reception mostly because Gomamon gets really excited about the prospect (and it gives their parents peace of mind, but let's be real it's mostly about Gomamon's happiness).
Mimi: Chapel wedding followed by an extravagant reception just outside New York City. The buffet is a very international and varied affair, there's a lot of dancing, and Mimi wears a total of three dresses and four pairs of shoes (she breaks one pair) over the course of the event. She somehow manages to check on every single guest and make sure they're having fun while never taking a break from dancing.
Takeru: Chapel wedding immediately followed by a month traveling in Europe for the honeymoon. They stop in Paris for three days to have a party at Takeru's grandparents' place (in which Patamon learns he can't handle his champagne), and have a big dinner with family and close friends when they return to Japan.
Hikari: Chapel wedding and reception. She just really likes the aesthetic. Her wedding dress is very cute and blush colored rather than white.
Daisuke: Once he gets the coveted "yes", he almost arranges for an immediate city hall wedding from sheer excitement, but his significant other quickly convinces him to do an irreligious ceremony and reception with all their family and friends. Ken and V-mon are his best men.
Iori: Shinto temple wedding. Considering his upbringing, he just can't think of any reason why he should go for anything else. He surprises himself by getting very emotional during the ceremony.

Watching DA:LEK during another trip around the Sun
Tumblr media
Focus on colour
Earlier this week I turned a year older & pretty much since my time in Ports, I have a mini tradition of watching my favourite films on my birthday. It’s also more accurate to say that they’re coming-of-age films, I re-watched Last Evolution Kizuna (2020). Out of the way, LEK is genuinely drop dead gorgeous. Yeah it was a theatrical release, but this is legit the best DA has looked imo, even better than the reboot. The art direction, the lighting, I’m not even touching on the animation; it all belongs in a gallery. Something that has always intrigued me is the use of colours in the film. Whenever I visualised LEK in my mind, blue & a variation of summer hues are the most prominent palettes that are ingrained into my memory. Obviously, Taichi & Yamato’s colour schemes are orange & blue; there’s that association that’s been around for the past 2 decades with these characters. Initially I was thinking of writing a piece that analyses the use of colours scene by scene. Yeah so um, I’m just busy straight up. But I still want to shed light on what stuck out to me the most.
Tumblr media
Colour choices
There’s the colour scheme of the characters with their crests / Digimon partners, and also the colour scheme of their clothes. The Crest of Courage & Agumon are orange (sometimes yellow for the latter), Gabumon & the Crest of Friendship are blue : basic Taichi & Yamato colours as discussed before.
Tumblr media
Taichi As seen with Taichi’s signature clothes all the way from DA (1999), he usually wears blue clothing items. We see this in 02, Tri he had a mixture, & typically in all the scenes of LEK, Taichi is wearing variations of blue with his attire. Yamato has always had his ugly green singlet. In 02 what we do see of his casual clothes it’s actually black, from Tri my most prominent memory is his rocker black hoodie & the green jacket when they fought Alphamon. Coming close to his hipster brother, Yamato is arguably the best dressed male Chosen Child & during LEK, it’s a mixture of green & black clothing items. (Yes there are scenes for both where this colour choice isn’t always the same, likewise in promotional art. I’m just pointing out the most obvious ones.) Orange is a secondary colour from a combination of passionate red & optimistic yellow, it’s naturally a warm colour; these attributes fit Taichi. You’ll also see it associated with the autumn season & Halloween, all that stuff. *Incoming personal take, not related to colour theory or symbolism. Literally just my own opinion, it may change* Despite how loud orange is, I don’t see it standing on its own. It’s an in between colour for me; I see it, I think ‘that's just a mixture of red & yellow’. Yeah it’s associated with warmth, joy & enthusiasm, but again you get that more with yellow & red; it’s a colour that’s part of a package. Paradoxically, I personally think the same can be said for Taichi. Sure, he’s the main goggle-head leader & poster boy for DA. But when you think of a leader, you also think of his team members. *Your chance to walk away from LEK spoilers* Aside from the main message of growing up, Taichi’s goodbye with Agumon also represented his ‘in between dynamic’ with his partner. At the start of the film, he had his thesis which he wasn’t that sure what to write about. Similarly being a Chosen Child, of course Taich cares about Agumon & his duty, but he just manages the bare minimum amount of time to spend on this aspect of his life. Taichi’s in between worlds, and in either one, he’s not a 100% there - but cares & takes these things to heart. Tri gets plenty of criticism as it is, but the plotpoint of Taichi being melancholic & considering the impact of the Digimon fights in the real world, there’s some merit to it.
Interestingly enough in LEK, Taichi’s not the one taking charge, it’s Yamato. Taichi’s backseat approach reminds me of Sora not including herself during the first Diaboromon fight; and how she spends her last few moments with Piyomon just spending time with her. Taichi does the same with Agumon once they find out about the rings, it felt like spending your last few moments with a pet that has to be put down. But Agumon’s not a pet, he’s Taichi’s Digimon partner.
Tumblr media
Yamato In recent years, I've seen people online vouch that Yamato is the one DA cast member who's unapologetically himself & will wear his heart on his sleeve. Taichi's a loud person, but he has a hard time confessing his feelings & confronting them. A foil to Yamato who by all accounts appears as a reserved individual, he's the boy who literally cries & he doesn't hide his emotions. Emotionally constipated maybe, but if he has something to say, he'll definitely show it.
This is apparent during the course of LEK. Whereas Taichi spent his final days with Agumon eating & taking him to his uni apartment, Yamato took charge of the investigation of the new adult characters they were dealing with. We could see at times while Gabumon was there, Yamato did keep his distance (my boy's character arc is learning to embrace his friends & not putting it all on himself). In some regards, Yamato’s the ‘blue oni’ to Taichi’s ‘red oni’ (or rather orange). Yamato is also part of that other half dynamic with Taichi, you usually think about him while  thinking about Taichi. There’s the ‘blues’ part of Yama’s colour scheme, his passion for music & moody character. Blue is a cool colour, it can invoke a feeling of calmness, loyalty in other situations. Then with the whole werewolf theme of Gabumon, there are blue elements there & the debatable ice/blue fire attacks he has.
Tumblr media
Blue DA:LEK’s usage of blue covers both the joyous aspects and melancholic parts of not only the film, but is a mirror to the characters’ internal struggles. Butterflies have always been a huge motif in DA & Menoa has this butterfly hair clip that is a stunning, electrifying blue. But transferring that blue to Never-Land, it’s still electrifying, but for the worse. It feels hypnotic & eerie, the colour blue loses its calm connotation & diverts toward a sea of depression. For months after leaving the theatre, the Never-Land scenes were stuck in my head. The film has a message of ‘don’t get too caught up in nostalgia / your childhood’ & they hit it right over the ballpark with the Never-Land setting / conclusion of the film. Adult Menoa was trying to hold onto a childhood that her child self was previously trying to rush growing up from (??), it’s a cracked mirror to how Tai & Yama were also struggling to hold onto their beloved childhood while navigating the abrupt transition to adulthood. This mixed explosion of emotions & realisations, character growth & inner battles is reflected back in what I’m calling the ‘twilight colours’.
Tumblr media
Twilight Menoa’s crystals have this purple-blue-pink thing going on. Her goodbye flashback with Morphomon is a daunting hellscape. Taiyama’s final goodbye with Agu & Gabu is a softer hue of that purple-like colour; literally getting darker & welcoming the night once they’re gone.
I’m really going on a limb here, but this reminds me of the ‘twilight hour’. *Could totally be pulling out of my ass - During my uni dissertation, I focused on Kimi no Na wa (2016). The film explored the ‘twilight hour’ & it had a more romantic connotation there. But there’s the rough translation of this period of time being a transition from our world to the other or supernatural world; that tiny bridge where we cross paths. In LEK during those twilight goodbyes, it’s Taichi, Yamato & Menoa having to say goodbye to not only their childhood, their Digimon partners, but also a part of themselves - that child part. That child in the blink of an eye is thrown into the same confusing world, but now debuting as a young adult with all its responsibilities.

matches (taiato)
Tumblr media
to whomever. happy valentine's day.
The sun shone obtrusively against Taichi’s goggles, momentarily blinding Yamato. It was uncharacteristically warm for the beginning of the year, both boys discarding their jackets as soon as they stepped foot onto the soccer pitch.
“Just one game. Please.” Taichi’s eyes were wide and hopeful, and even at the tender age of twelve, Yamato knew he would do whatever it took to keep that look on Taichi’s face.
“Only because you asked so nicely.”
Goggles nestled tightly in his hair, Taichi took off, flying across the half-frozen field. Yamato could see his own breath, quick bursts of fog that temporarily obscured his vision. Growing up with a single father had equipped him with a vague understanding of sports. Still, Yamato’s basic understanding was no match for Taichi’s prowess. Brown hair fluttered in the wind, smile brighter than the sunshine. It had taken Yamato’s breath away, but only for a moment. Muscles burning, Yamato pushed himself faster, further, trying to be a worthy opponent.
It had only taken them four matches to tire out, leaning helplessly against a nearby bench.
Half of a bottle of water tight in his grasp, Taichi’s chest heaved with exertion. “You know,” he started, words broken up between gasps of breath. “I didn’t know you could play like that. Why don’t you sign up for a team, or something?”
Blond hair plastered to his forehead, Yamato paused for a moment. Words gathered on the tip of his tongue, almost shattering their silence. ‘I only like soccer when I play with you.’
His teeth bit back the odd confession, heart beating haphazardly. Where had that come from? Taichi raised an eyebrow, patiently waiting for a response. Blue eyes met brown, Yamato’s throat growing uncomfortably dry. He managed a shrug, gripping his water bottle with white knuckles.
Taichi’s hair was tousled, sticking up in all directions. Usually, Yamato would tease him about it, but the sun illuminated his golden skin, eyes shining with happiness and what was happening?
For a moment, Taichi’s bottom lipped puffed out in disappointment. “But we could be teammates, Yama.”
“Aren’t we already?” It was meant to come out light-hearted; a joke to lift Taichi’s spirits. Instead, a shadow cast itself underneath chocolate eyes, a chill in the air that not even the sun could chase away.
The soccer ball fidgeted in Taichi’s hands. It had only been a few months after their endless summer together; Yamato’s heart ached for Gabumon.
“Of course we are, Taichi.” His hand reached out towards his best friend, grasping him with trembling fingers. “It’s just hard, right now.”
Without warning, the soccer ball flew from Taichi’s hands, a singular kick projectiling it towards the other side of the field. “This blows, man. It’s Valentine’s, and I can’t even show Agumon all the good candy.”
A laugh escaped from Yamato’s lips, loud and brash. “You know what, Taichi? You’re right; Agumon would’ve loved tasting all of your chocolates. Maybe we should go out and buy some in his honor.” Yamato lifted his water bottle to his lips, taking a large sip as he caught his breath.
Taichi’s face spun towards him, eyes flickering through emotions. Finally, he settled on hope, a goofy grin working its way onto his face. “It’s a date!”
Yamato nearly choked.

Digimon Adventure: 2020 – Episode 49: The God Of Evil Descends, Millenniumon (Review)
Thoughts on the forty-ninth episode of the Digimon Adventure reboot series.
This was a pretty decent build-up episode.
The white foamy blob thing (WIP Kimeramon) is hideous. :D
Yamato: “Gabumon. Can you fight? Koushirou! Sora! Let’s go . . . stop them! You guys stay here to protect Patamon and Tailmon until they recover. Got it?” I love Yamato taking charge. In fact, reboot Yamato is just as competent a leader as reboot Taichi . . . which begs the question: WHY IS TAICHI THE LEADER? XD; (No, seriously, there is really nothing distinct about Taichi’s “leadership” in the reboot compared to the OG . . . he’s just the leader because he’s the main protag. That’s it.) But . . . we finally got Yamato uttering Sora’s name! uwu
MetalGarurumon “flying” looks so lame and hilarious, lol.
Wow, Hikari can actually emote! :o She definitely seems the most human she’s ever been in this series. I like!
I admit I laughed when Gomamon fell. :P But aww, Gomamon wanting to fight. <3
Komondomon trying to cheer the kids up with flowers was cute. I guess he isn’t completely useless/just transport. :P
Mimi comforting Hikari was A+ material. She is 100% the best character in the reboot - anyone who disagrees is just extremely biased. :P
Mimi: “Taichi-san sure smiles a lot. I like it when Taichi-san smiles. My grandpa usually has a stern face, but his smiles are just lovely too. Maybe I like people who smile.” Yo . . . we got any Michi fans up in here!? XD I liked Michi in the OG too. :3
The quick Taichi/Hikari flashback scenes were super cute - but it’s amazing that they did more for this particular sibling relationship than most of their shared screentime together so far. XD;
MetalGarurumon v. Griffomon was fleeting and a non-event, but it was cool to see MGMon’s Grace Cross Freezer attack. :D
Millenniumon is freakin’ HUGE. Now that’s a big boi. :o
And WarGreymon returns! After one episode. XD; Can’t say I didn’t expect that . . . having the main protagonist “die” is pretty traumatising for little kids, so best to have him return ASAP. But I still wish it had been for a few more episodes. :P
But I hope Taichi doesn’t defeat Millenniumon on his own . . .
I loved the emotional beats of the episode. The kids’ interactions - especially the Mimi stuff - elevated it, because without them I would’ve just thought it was ho-hum. I liked seeing Jou and Mimi support Hikari - it was one of the few times I actually felt like the kids were friends and actually cared about one another.
I wonder how long the series can stretch the Millenniumon battle out for . . .
