If you ever have the sudden urge totlk about Kushina/Fugaku, please do <3
(Totally unrelated to me reading your fic and finding a new rare pair. Honest. /lh)
Why yes I do love talking about my rarepairs!! *chin on hands* I’m so glad you asked! Also, sorry for the incredibly late reply!!
Okay. So. Fugashina. I haven’t actually had to put down my thoughts about this ship beyond fic ideas before, so be forewarned that some of this is just brainmush and might not make sense.
I’ve mentioned this a couple other times, but I’ve long held the headcanon that the Uzumaki and the Uchiha are linked, through their sealing abilities (actual seals vs the sharingan which I would argue acts as a seal on the mind) but also as narrative foils. And that trickles down to their members. We already got the Naruto/Sasuke dynamic in canon, along with some teeny bits of Kushina and Obito also as foils (outcasts desperate to prove themselves to the place/people that regard them as Other).
Kushina is a fantastic character, strong and determined and so very underutilized. Admittedly, it is mostly Minato’s story but Kushina just gets swept under the rug. And while I lovelovelove Minato’s character, there’s a power imbalance in the relationship between the two of them that I don’t particularly like, (probably why I ship both Minato and Kushina with people that are not each other lol). They each deserve to have an equal partnership (and if that means writing fanfic, then fine damnit). Kushina doesn’t deserve to be that wife who wields power over her helpless husband; Minato deserves to be more than just a malewife after we got glimpses of what he could be. Kushina just feels like wasted potential (admittedly we only see her in domestic scenes in the anime, and mayyyyybe some fights scenes in the movies I think if I’m remembering correctly) and I think that’s just sad. It’s like… watching Padme, once the queen of an entire planet and then a senator in the galactic senate, spend most of RotS barefoot and pregnant. Idk I just think it’s wasted potential and it’s stupid and I want to make it better.
I already said I like the Uchiha and Uzumaki as foils, and the one who seems to beat balance her out personality-wise is Fugaku: he’s another case wasted potential (not as bad as Kushina, but still). I like having someone more serious and a little older than her to balance her immaturity and whimsical nature, someone who has the physical and mental stamina to keep up with her, and abilities that compliment hers. I think there are a lot more thoughts about those qualities but I’m exhausted rn. BUT. All this to say Fugaku seems to fit perfectly with her personality and her abilities and has the mental resilience to keep up. He doesn’t strike me as someone who would put her on a pedestal (like Minato did) and instead would challenge her and force her to think instead of behaving recklessly. In canon he’s stern (discipline-wise)with his children—I can see him taking the same approach with Kushina pre-relationship because he can see the potential and will try to help it grow the best way he knows.
She probably likes him for the fact that he doesn’t care she’s an outlier in the village—he likes competence and assertiveness and she’s got that in spades. He treats her as a person and a contributing member of the village—treating her like she has value beyond being a jinchuuriki (which I’m pretty sure was kinda hush hush at that point in canon but idc shhh).
I just want mutual respect and a balanced relationship and symbolism with an Uchiha/Uzumaki union. A kind of closure to these two once great clans.
…And their babies would be hella cute ☺️

A continuation from this: hope you like it @books-n-guns ;) took me long enough
.*.
Mikoto had suggested a restaurant for their not-date, but any kind of restaurant fancier than a food stand makes her uncomfortable. Her options are limited but she also has intention on making this as comfortable for him either.
She hears the flapping of the noren being pushed aside and she’s looking up at the vaguely terrifying features of Mikoto’s erstwhile suitor. He doesn’t look like he smiles a lot—or at all, really.
But he’s polite enough, doesn’t wrinkle his nose at the simple food that’s slid across the counter to them, and eats with enough of an appetite that Kushina grudgingly admits he’s not too bad. If only it weren’t for the near-monotone of his voice. At this point she’d gladly take Minato’s stupidly philosophical rambling.
T&I, Mikoto said. Torture and Interrogation. Kushina is pretty sure he just talks his victims to death. She feels pretty close herself, even as she hums vaguely in response to any of his (infrequent) questions. It seems enough to keep him going. Right now he’s on some complaint about the washing machines in his apartment building getting clogged with sand from too many nin returning from Suna missions.
She inhales another bowl, catching the vendor’s eye. If she’s going to be stuck here for the foreseeable future, at least she’ll be well fed. Fugaku continues his diatribe, surprisingly talkative for someone who looks like his fingernails are being forcibly removed. It becomes a background hum, mixing with the chatter of other patrons and the clanking pans.
Until he says something she really can’t ignore.
Kushina, who’s zoned out the whole time he’s been talking, jolts back into awareness. She realizes she’s holding her chopsticks like she’s ready to stab him with them. “I’m sorry. What did you just say about Obito?”
It’s a credit to Fugaku’s seeming lack of social awareness that he doesn’t notice the edge to her voice. He blinks, unsmiling mouth curling further into a frown. “I assumed Mikoto had told you. With his grandmother not being able to—”
“No. I heard what you said.” She hadn’t. But that isn’t the point. She’ll simply ask Mikoto later. “But what did you say about Obito?” He’s one of her favorite genin, has more of a personality than most of the others and isn’t afraid to get sassy. And she’s pretty sure Fugaku just called him a half-breed.
Not in those words, exactly—but putting that kind of emphasis on Obito being part Senju and with that expression, there’s not much room for interpretation. She knows the Uchiha have a long-seated dislike of the Senju—everyone does—but her threshold for bigotry is very low.
For the first time the entire evening, his eyes are fixed completely on her. The prospect of Wicked Eye Fugaku’s complete and undivided attention would have sent many other shinobi running for the hills. But Kushina is a predator in her own right and she can read challenge in those inky eyes.
With a chill, she realizes he’s been testing her the entire ‘date’. Finding out what gets reactions, what buttons to push. He’s been toying with her. What for, she doesn’t know. She’s never even talked to Uchiha Fugaku in her life and she doesn’t know what Mikoto’s told him, if anything. But either he’s got some grudge or there’s something else going on. And Kushina doesn’t like being toyed with.
Her palm cracks down on the counter and that’s all the warning the patrons of the stand get.
While her being a jinchuuriki isn’t common knowledge, her being an Uzumaki is. People dive out of the way the moment she’s on her feet. It’s a messy fight in such close quarters, kunai digging deeply into the counter and the cook shouting something at them.
It doesn’t take long before the fight spills into the street and there’s suddenly space for them to exploit in the war they’re waging. Civilians and shinobi alike crowd out of the way with the frankly terrifying knowledge that an Uchiha and an Uzumaki are trying to kill each other.
But Kushina is intent only on the Uchiha asshole, wondering for the thousandth time why she’d said yes to Mikoto’s dubious request. It’d be one date, she’d said. You’d never see each other after it. But Kushina has a feeling that they’ll be seeing each other more than is wise.
Several senbon whistle just past her cheek and she whips a thin chakra chain back in retaliation. Fugaku isn’t nearly as powerful, but he’s fast.
His eyes spin red and Kushina can’t stop the rush of excitement that courses through her. She’s always wanted to fight a Sharingan user and Mikoto, while willing, has yet to even achieve a second tomoe. Fugaku is on an entirely different level, brutal and willing to go to whatever lengths.
She can feel the Kyuubi stir uneasily inside her—but he remains silent and still, for which she’s grateful. Sharingan users have been used since the first jinchuuriki’s sealing as a protective measure and she doesn’t care for distractions now.
They whirl around each other, mismatched but equally balanced—power and expertise fighting for dominance. And Kushina can’t stop the feral grin splitting her face. This is what she’s been missing, what she’s been searching for during battle. True competition.
It would have continued, true ninja-style, all the way through the village—but with one of his senbon pricking the artery in her throat and her fingers curled around a kunai pressed to his ribs, there’s no way to ignore the fact they’ve fought to a standstill. Kushina realizes just how close they’ve ended up, practically in each other’s arms.
She leaps back, frantically putting space between them. Fugaku doesn’t follow. He remains statue-like, sendon bristling in his fingers. Kushina can’t stop herself from thinking she sees approval in his now-black eyes.
The spell has broken and their surroundings seep back into place. But Kushina won’t (can’t) look away from the man. And he looks back with an expression she can’t read..
All she knows is that this is a truce, balanced on the blade of a kunai.
One more move and it could start all over again. Either way they’re not going to let this go, and there is promise in their eyes—there will be a rematch. And when they do, there will be no holds barred. Nothing stopping them from bringing this—whatever this is—to completion.
And when Kushina turns and disappears into the crowd that has gathered, Fugaku is left alone in the middle of the street. People eye him warily as they begin to assess the damage in the aftermath. But no one approaches him.
Fugaku wipes the blood from his mouth, and looks after the redhead with the barest trace of a smile.

“Tall, dark and asshole? No thanks. You can keep him.”
Mikoto’s wide eyes are pleading but Kushina purposefully turns away. The Uchiha follows anyway. “But if my parents see he’s interested in someone else, they’ll stop thinking of him as a possibility—“
“And they’ll look at me and start thinking,” Kushina says sourly. “Like I said, no thank you.”
Mikoto’s brows arch meaningfully. “Does this mean Minato finally got the guts to talk to you?”
“It’s the problem getting him to shut up. I’m not looking for a date—from anyone,” she stresses when her friend’s mouth opens.
Mikoto grabs her arm. “It’d just be one date. One. And you’d never have to see him again.”
”Are you serious?”
”Deadly. He works T&I, so he hardly gets out in the field anyway.”
Kushina scrubs her forehead, already regretting the decision she hasn’t fully made yet. “And how old is he?”
“He’s only eight years older than you.” Mikoto’s look is uncomfortably triumphant.
“I’ll do it, but—BUT,” she shouts over Mikoto’s victorious crowing, “you owe me ramen for a month. Make that three months.”
The Uchiha slaps her hand into Kushina’s in a deal done. “And you’ll get it,” she says with a sharp grin. “And more beside.”
Kushina feels like she just made a deal with the devil.

Kushina discovers that Fugaku hates pets and starts leaving bowls of cat food out. A few days later Fugaku’s wondering where all these cats have been coming from and why they’re hanging around him—and then realizes someone’s been feeding them outside his apartment.
But he resigns himself to this and he finds himself buying cat food for his newfound pets (watching from a distance, Kushina’s wondering where she’s gone wrong. But she can’t deny it’s adorable to watch him feeding the stray cats and awkwardly patting them like they’re dogs.)

The sudden realization that if Fugaku and Kushina had *any* relationship/acquaintance, they would be Naruto/Sasuke 1.0
