Broken Hopes: Freezeout continued

I almost faint when I see one burger patty on the griddle. Thankfully, it isn't burnt.

I hear someone, probably the plant monster, complain about not having received their burger yet. I very quickly prepare the burger with the condiments that I know the plant monster usually has and hurriedly bring it out to them.

"Hrm. Took you long enough," they mumble.

"I-i-i'm sorry. I forgot you had ordered a burger," I say, breathing heavily.

"Just don't forget next time, or I might not come back here."

"O-okay. I'll… okay."

I bow apologetically and return to the kitchen to prepare the chilidogs.

Chillby is in the kitchen, and he got started on the chilidogs for me. "Thanks, Chillby. I got it from here," I say. Chillby simply shakes his head and says, "Naw, I got it. Your chilidogs don't turn out too well, anyway. I'll deliver 'em to Papyrus for you, as well."

"There's no need. I got it."

Chillby pauses and looks at me before firmly telling me to return to the counter. I reluctantly nod and go back out.

“Hey. How’s the ‘dogs comin’ along?” Papyrus asks.

I yawn and say, “Chillby’s doin’ ‘em.”

Papyrus, probably… no… definitely worried about me, lends me his scarf. “You can return it tonight,” he says. I refuse it, saying that it is against the rules to wear anything other than the uniform during my shift. Papyrus makes googly eyes pop out of his head, and he looks angry.

“YOUR SHIFT IS FROM 4:20 A.M. TO 4:10 A.M.,” he shouts quietly, “Why does Chillby make your shift 23 hours and 50 minutes long? And why does he not have any other employees?”

“I ask myself that every f**king day,” I mutter. My thoughts are interrupted by an unexpected voice.

I finally got back into your head. Your Determination’s been so weak for the past… DECADE… that I haven’t been able to talk to ya, partner.

I’m sorry, but I can’t talk right now… Who are you, again?

Ya know, I don’t blame you for not remembering me, Frisk. I haven’t talked to ya in over a decade, so… yeah. And the last time I did talk to you, I shouted at you and made ya cry like Azzy. It’s me, Chara.

A-azzy?

Don’t tell me you forgot teh fluffy goat bro, too!

I don’t respond.

Papyrus waves his hand in front of my face and says, “Helloooo. Earth to Frisk? You’ve been staring off into space and polishing the same spot on that pint glass for over ten minutes. Are you okay?”

“Y-yeah. I just… was thinking.”

“Well, that’s dangerous,” Papyrus jokes. “In all seriousness, the chilidogs that Chillby made were delicious!”

thinking about FCO Rosquez at their first PR-forced public dinner (like a week or two after the announcement, Wednesday or Thursday night) and how their conversation is supposed to go when Marc was dying to talk to Valentino all winter (still has a string of unanswered texts in his phone) but now he’s closed off and Valentino wants to make this work but can’t have them fight in public or be silent for an entire hour, do we think they find a middle ground or Vale just talk about random things on his own or they somehow ignore everything and are able to tell each other about their winter or subjects that have nothing to do with MotoGP or—

this is so nuts to think about... like even outside the insane emotional reality of getting outed and the violence of public scrutiny and like. marc having (once again !) his ability to control his own narrative ripped away from him by his association with valentino— which is his LEAST favorite thing (i do think he blames himself for the photos though... like maybe if i wasnt such a whore we wouldnt be in this mess :((( which. marc buddy naur.) on TOP of that he is having a romantic candellit dinner with his ex situationship that he is still in love with. one million points lightning damage. so everyone is extremely strung out at this shitty little date night table (michelin restaurant lbr) and marc has justtttt gone dark on his whatsapp thread with valentino. maybe he is trying to maybe exert some control over his life here in small ways... put up SOME walls in clumsy self protective fashion...

but VALE is like okay. so if this thing between us is public he doesnt want it or want me. interesting. okay im cool im fine im good np who cares i hate him anyway (girl.) and he's also um. kind of reeling from the abrupt reversal of the status quo here tbh. marc has never played hard to get ever ever not once in his entire life. no self preservation on that man 5ever. he's literally always been there giving vale flattering attention and being in love with him !!! so vale is kind of off-balance here being met with some version of the marc marquez freezeout, not sure how to react but missing marc's attention. and he chooses to compensate as he does with most roadblocks in his life: full charm offensive. (he also, in some selfless and tender corner in the back of his mind that he is trying to ignore, just really and truly knows marc is FREAKED and misses seeing him laugh. he wants the evil jajajas.... he will do anything for the evil jajajas....) so he is trying. SO hard to get him to crack a smile. lowkey causing a scene in the restaurant by being such a clown... but marc isnt really biting. is still responding, like they ARE having a conversation, but its nothing like it used to be. clearly he is just being polite. smiles twice ALL night—all wan and pale and beautiful and so clearly exhausted—and vale's mouth gets all dry and his ribcage feels like its going to implode. and of course in response to this he is like wow. my heartburn is going crazy. damn. [chugging wine].

like looking to real life, as awkward as rosquez have been in their years of estrangement, they have always had to share space. for 6 years in that paddock ! that's a lot of years of small talk ! they can have and will do it if necessary... so as the night drags i think marc talks about riding and the season to fill in the gaps... goes home and gives himself a list of regimented rules to stick to when interacting with valentino (i see him texting exclusively the PR thread more as his classically unpracticed self protection style than like. a deliberate fuck you to that end. i cant drunk booty call vale if karen from PR is also there type stuff). that being said, eventually i do think he makes elaborate excuses to BEND these rules bc he still wants valentino's attention. and also his tongue in his mouth. hes like okay! i am only kissing valentino in front of tv cameras if we both podium! and then they DONT share a podium and hes like. okay! it would be WEIRD if i didnt kiss vale after i podiumed even if he didnt! because thats what i would do if we were actually together! [starts jogging across the paddock like a dick-seeking missile.]

Sad and Frustrating News

In early September, the Pacific Crest Trail north of Harts Pass closed due to fires on both sides of the border. Harts Pass lies just thirty miles from the Northern terminus of the PCT. For so many this is a bitter end in their endeavor to complete the PCT in 2022. It is possible that the trail could re-open but when is anyone's guess. Conditions in the North Cascades have taken a late summer turn rather suddenly.

Many believed this year might allow some respite from the past smoke filled years. The mountains received late winter snows and a wet spring followed. Apparently this was not enough. Sadly it appears that for many Harts Pass will be the northern terminus this season.

Following is the news release from the US Forest Service:

Release Date: Sep 8, 2022

Increased fire activity on some of the lightning caused fires, burning in the very remote, steep, and inaccessible terrain in the northwest corner of the Pasayten Wilderness Area, spurred trail and area closures over the holiday weekend. Hot, dry, and windy conditions are expected today as a trough moves into the area which is expected to create conditions for increased fire behavior. The Shull, The Parks, Kid, Three Fools, Skagit, and Elbow fires, located near the Canadian-U.S border, are expected to grow in acreage today.

In a joint delegation with the National Park Service, a National Incident Management Organization Team, NIMO Team 2, assumed command yesterday over the six fires now being called the NW Pasayten Fires, located in the Pasayten Wilderness on the Methow Valley Ranger District of the Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest, as well as the Chilliwack Complex Fires within the North Cascades National Park Service Complex.

A number of closures are in effect including an area closure for the Freezeout Creek basin and a number of trails and portions of trails in the area. Portions of both the Pacific Crest Trail and Pacific Northwest Trail remain closed at this time.

Currently, there is no reroute in place for hikers. In a post, the PCTA reminded hikers not to cross into Canada on alternate trails, which is a violation of Canadian law and could result in deportation and a ban from the country; instead, they should exit the trail at Harts Pass at mile 2623.

The closure is a blow for northbounders, who make up about 90% of thru-hikers on the PCT. The northern reaches of the trail often see significant snow in late September or early October, making travel considerably more difficult. In an email, Scott Wilkinson, Content Development Director for the PCTA, called the closure “totally indefinite” and noted that what happens will likely depend on how the fire north of the border behaves.

Major wildfires have become an annual feature of hiking on the PCT, necessitating closures and reroutes that have forced some hikers onto roads, convinced others to skip sections of the trail, and driven others off the trail entirely. Currently, another 24.7-mile section of trail is closed in Oregon; fires had previously closed other parts of the trail in Oregon and northern California this year.
