Introducing:Me
I have always held a sort of aversion to AI and advanced technology as a whole. I remember fighting my mother about taking a typing class in middle school because it wasn’t as cool to me as art. I owe her an apology because technology has been a huge part of my life and has only encroached further as I continued my education. I’ve come to understand that a large part of my job is predicting patterns that concern themselves with consumers and technology has a huge part in that. I hope to have a better understanding of trendspotting within this complex topic applying what I learn to my future projects in Advertising and beyond.
I am originally from Fredericksburg, VA but spent the last 7 years calling DC my home. I am the oldest of 5 in a blended family whom I love dearly. I have the sweetest rescue Pitbull named Mozart. I am a writer at heart and dream of being an author one day. I am a gym enthusiast, artist, and skier who is always down for a road trip as long as I have aux. I got into Advertising as a way to mix my passion for creativity and business savvy nature falling into the stereotypical pipeline of Business School to Humanities and Sciences. I went to Undergrad at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, VA. It was an amazing experience at the Robertson School and helped me recognize how much I love the process of what I create and the perspectives I can gain from my peers. This field offers so many opportunities but I hope to be an Art director or Copywriter at an Ad agency, maybe a Superbowl ad. I am seriously not too picky in this job market but hopefully I have a career that allows me to follow my passion for travel and learning from different cultures. I typically work in adobe programs like illustrator or photoshop but continue to learn something new about them every day. I’m incredibly interested in social media and curating campaigns in an array of different channels.

The haunting spirits of Fredericksburg
My name is Zacharius Ark and its time to wake up. I have to wake up at nine every morning and be at work by round twelve. As a bartender I have to work long ass twelve hour shifts. I only get three hours between waking up and going to work, it isn’t all bad. On the job I can have my little laptop under counter and browse the web, but I mostly just read. I like cowboy books. The one I read the most is this little deal about a old man cowboy all cool; he’s a sweet loner who goes around stealing from thieves. I work out most mornings too, partly from boredom and partly cause things get too rowdy at the bar. No uniform at this place so I can wear the usual; t-shirt, hawaiian top, and levi’s. I guess my closet is a bit dull cause the rest of my clothes are variations of that, I like to be consistent, not standing out much. Work isn’t far from my apartment so I go on nice walks before getting there. There aren’t many people out during working hours, almost like a ghost town aside from the infrequent walker. The trees are nice this time of year, over the ancient cemeteries in the town it all comes together nicely. Opening up shop doesn’t take long and there’s only a few people coming in and out till night. I’m pretty decent at keeping up a conversation, more importantly keeping em’ drinking. Round’ the end of my shift there’s only a few people left in the place. The last two guys got into an argument when one of em’ commented on the others confederate tat. This confederate guy was pretty drunk “You got no pride in your heritage or your history”
“Look don’t conflate bigotry with heritage, can’t you at least acknowledge they were bad people?”
“I don’t like your tone with me mister” the Connie started getting pushy with the other one so I ended up having to intervene. “Sir if you can’t calm down you’re going to have to leave” he said back to me “fuck you libtard” and tried to fight me. I just picked him up while he was screaming something about “the south will rise again” and sent him on his way outside.
“Why’d you have to confront him about that? I’m almost off my shift” I was sorta ticked off at the other guy. “What was I gonna do just ignore that? I’m literally a historian I feel like I know more about it than him.” Yes he COULD have ignored it, we all could’ve just sat around for a bit in silence if we had to and gone away. “Whatever I’m off shift now anyways” The other guy who works there replaced me and I started heading home. I don’t like the streets at night, there aren’t many street lights, trees start looking like demons over the graves, and there are these figures and sounds I can’t make out. I always walk faster at night. This time I saw some lean guy groaning in an alley, all limp and falling over. I ask him if he’s ok but never get anything more than a moan. My hair started standing up and my stomach started feeling horribly empty, I ran away, he gave me the creeps.
The next morning they were talking about sightings of wandering confederate reenactors. Probably just a rumor, but it gives me something to talk about with customers. On the way to work I saw them. All gathered in the graveyard. It looked like they were discussing something, but I couldn’t hear them speak. I tried to walk off to work a bit faster because they sorta ruined my morning. When I got to work my check was lying lonely in a little drawer. I’ve never seen my bosses face, I don’t really care as long as the checks keep coming in. He says hes seen mine, whenever he comes into the bar just to look at how I work, which gives me the creeps. The news media was rattling off about the growing numbers of confederates all day, and even sightings of unioners. All sorts of people came into the bar yelling about how they’ve “seen the old bastards!” or gossiping about if they’ve risen from the grave.
It was starting to bother me too, just when it happened, a whole troop of them were marching through the streets. Their skin either gone or falling apart, organs barely hanging on. The bar screamed, some cheered, others cried. I felt sick, what if I had to see them on my way home? I texted my boss asking if I could get off early, he said no because this is the most business we’d had in a while. Was he here? In this room right now? So I stuck it out in the bar. The historian came in at some point. He was saying they couldn’t just be some reenactment or prank because their clothes were much too realistic, with his logic they had to be the real thing. There were deaths coming in and a state of emergency announced, buildings were in flames and confederate flags were raised. It seemed that the dead could recognize who was and was not on their side, the ones they saw fit were converted.
My shift was over in the empty bar, at some point people realized they needed to protect their family or just their homes. I grabbed the gun we keep at hand, strictly for emergency situations, before going out and into the night. I didn’t wait for my replacement, I figured he wouldn’t come. The flames were high outside, and the flags raged on. I was going to go to my apartment but there were zombies infesting the area and I think they saw me so I just ran back to the bar and fell asleep behind the counter, gripping the gun through my sleep. When I woke up my stomach dropped. The bar was full of them. That confederate cook guy immediately came up to me I guess to calm me down. “Heyyyy this might be a lot I know this might be a lot but me and the guys won’t be causing any ruckus”
“H-How did you get in?” I was shaking.
“What do you mean? Oh right I never told you, I’m your boss. Well anyways we’re gonna stay here if thats ok with you” he stuck out his hand for a shake. If this guy was really my boss I guess I don’t have much of a choice, so I shook his hand. When I noticed his grey skin, mine was slowly turning the same color. The worst feeling came over me, I looked back into his eye dreading to see what I knew was already there. There was a bite mark on the side of his face. I realized at that moment I could hear the confederates speak, I briefly thought about that historian. I shot my boss right there, but it was already too late to fight back, I, or at least my body soon became one of them.

AUSTIN (KXAN) — The Fredericksburg Police Department made an appeal on social media Monday night for information in a 12-year-old cold case that left a business owner dead.
In May 2007, fire crews battled a massive house fire and discovered 55-year-old Linda Muegge dead inside. She was the owner of The Peasant Kitchen catering business.
Police say she’d returned home from a yoga class around 5:30 p.m. that evening and almost 2.5 hours later, a neighbor reported her house was on fire. An autopsy on her burned body found that she’d actually died of blunt force trauma and homicide detectives began investigating.
“Investigators also learned the fire at her residence had been deliberately set and ruled as arson,” Texas Department of Public Safety officials said.

The best possible way through which you can find a reputable and reliable property manager is to see through referrals. Make sure that your property manager is licensed as that would give you a reliability that there has not former record of complaints so far!
Once you are sure of the above facts, schedule a meeting with the property manager and talk to him or her in person. Always go for a documentation where the contracts and agreements would be mutually consented.

Prayer
Father, we thank you for your word today. We thank you for the authority we hear in your words. We acknowledge your rightful authority as God Almighty, sovereign Lord, all powerful, all omnipotent, omnipresent, Holy God. All power, all authority is yours. And even your son said he was giving us all authority in heaven and Earth. We have so misused that authority. We have used it as entitlement to hurt our brothers and sisters, to which we are not even in relationship with. Help us to be more responsible with our actions, Father, with our words, knowing that only you, only you alone are sovereign. Only you alone or God. There is no one beside you. There is no one above you. In one day every knee will bow and every tongue will confess to our Lord. We are not waiting for that day. We are declaring, it now, have your way and our hearts have your way and our minds and our souls and our spirits convict us. Change us from the inside out. We pray this in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, amen.

Hello all! Please, if you can, help me find this ring that means so, so much to my family and myself. I don’t ever make posts like this, but please reblog. You have no idea how much this might help.
The Post Reads:
Help Me Find My Grandmother's Ring!
Attention Facebook! My name is Gabbi, and I am a third generation graduate from Columbia College. For those familiar, you know that the Columbia College ring is unique to the institution. My great grandmother gave her ring to my grandmother, and she gave the ring to me. It was my most prized possession. Unfortunately, last year on Christmas Eve, my family was visiting Fredericksburg, Virginia, and we stopped at a CVS on the way home so that I could pick up some hand lotion. I carelessly took off the ring to apply the lotion, and in the process, the ring rolled from the car. I realized that it was missing less than an hour later, but by that time, it was too late. The ring was gone. We left our phone number with the CVS staff, but no luck. A week later, we received a call from CVS saying that a man had come in, and he had found the ring. He left a phone number, but it did not work, and he refused to leave his name. I know this is a long shot, as this happened so long ago, but I desperately want to find this ring that means so much to my family and me. Please share this as much as possible. I am determined to find this ring, and I can't think of a better way to locate it than through Facebook and other social media methods. Please help!
I have included a picture of the ring here. It has a gold band with a black stone in the center with the Columbia College Emblem engraved on its face. On the inside of the band is engraved my great grandmother's graduation date.

One Man’s Road to Herbal Success: An Interview
By Chrissy Moore
I have always been fascinated by people’s life stories, particularly those in the herb world. How did they end up where they did? What circumstances led them down their chosen path? Some people take decades—and numerous career maneuverings—before they settle into their career of choice; others know their life’s calling from an early age. For Bill Varney, owner of URBANherbal in Fredricksburg, TX, his life’s work encompassed all those things and more. I recently asked Bill to give me a glimpse into his world as an herbal enthusiast and business owner and what it takes to succeed. Here’s what he said:
When did you first encounter herbs?
BV: I first discovered plants and gardening when I was very young! When I was eight years old, my parents had a greenhouse built for me, and I would start all kinds of plants from seeds and cuttings. Later as my love for all things green grew, I developed a love of herbs. That was about 1985, when I opened a small herbal apothecary shop and small herbal nursery, Varney’s Chemist Laden.
What is your technical background (education or otherwise)?
BV: I grew up tending to people’s gardens, worked for a number of nurseries, then received a B.S. in Business with a Minor in Horticulture from Oklahoma Panhandle State University. I went there because I had volunteered to help my elderly grandparents who lived in the area. Later, I became a Texas Certified Nurseryman.
Have you always known you wanted to work with plants/herbs?
BV: Yes, I have always had a “green thumb.” I have always been intrigued by plants, their use, their contribution to the world, whether they are reproduced by seed, rooted cuttings, etc. After I finished college and had a one -year agriculture stint in Tasmania, Australia, I returned to Houston, Texas, where my family was living and went to work for a well known nursery as their landscape buyer. Later, I wanted to “get out of the big city” and moved to Fredericksburg, Texas, to manage a local nursery. It was soon after that that I started Varney’s Chemist Laden, which later grew into the Fredricksburg Herb Farm. I sold that operation in 2007 and simplified my life to URBANherbal.
Give me a synopsis of your road to URBANherbal.
BV: When I owned the Fredricksburg Herb Farm, it was a very high end, labor intensive business with acres of manicured gardens, a day spa, bed and breakfast, two retail stores, a James Beard recognized restaurant, and wholesale operation that sold our products all over the world. Life was kind of crazy for me with “fires” to put out daily! I revamped and started URBANherbal. My son had finished his undergraduate degree and came home to help me for a year to open URBANherbal. A much simpler life: a laboratory, greenhouse, smaller gardens, and art galleries. For the most part, a one-man operation with a little help here and there. I make colognes, aromatherapy products, skin care for both men and women, candles, and gourmet foods. I also do landscape consulting and public speaking.
Can you describe your herb gardening style for those who are unable to visit your establishment in person?
BV: I always try to build gardens that use as many natives as possible, that attract pollinators, and are drought tolerant. I have studied Frederick Olmstead and Adelma Simmons (and got to visit with her a few times) and, of course, Madalene Hill from here in Texas.
What inspired you to start the apothecary shop segment of your herb garden, and how did that lead to the skin care/fragrance lines and the culinary products?
BV: Well, originally, our first store was an herbal apothecary store, Varney’s Chemist Laden. We sold “old fashioned” scents and skincare from old, reputable companies and finally realized we could do better, and our products ended up selling faster than the ones we were retailing. I ended up hiring an elderly retired founding chemist of a manufacturing skincare company to come for a few months and help formulate. Many of our products got recognized by the media and some received awards. I really enjoy custom making things for clients.
From what do you draw the most inspiration, both in your gardening and in your product development?
BV: I always am inspired daily if I can just bring a bit of happiness to one or two people either through products, plants, or foods through all of our senses. My personal life is inspired through faith, hope and love with friends, family, and anyone I meet.
Is there a fragrance profile or collection of herbs that you gravitate toward more than others?
BV: Personally, I love woody scents, citrus scents, masculine scents, lavender, lemon verbena, peppermint, eucalyptus, patchouli, musk, just to name a few. But I am always drawn to white flowers and night blooming flowers, not for myself on my body, but just to smell them and make PRODUCTS WITH THEM.
Which herbs/profiles do you find the most challenging to work with and why?
BV: Sweet woodruff and French tarragon because it is too hot here in Texas to grow them.
Who were your biggest herbal influences (alive or deceased), both in your younger years and as an adult? Do you have any herbal superheroes today that provide you with encouragement along your herbal journey?
BV: Well, as I said previously, I was really inspired by reading about Frederick Olmstead and his visions in landscapes. Walafrid Strabo, who around 840 A.D., wrote a beautiful poem called “Hortulus,” in which he lovingly describes clearing a garden of stinging nettles and preparing the soil to plant sage, southernwood, wormwood, fennel, poppy, clary, mint, pennyroyal, celery, betony, agrimony, tansy, catmint, and radish. Strabo introduces his herbs the way a mother might speak of her children, praising their qualities without neglecting their occasional blemish. In my life, Adelma Simmons, who founded Caprilands Herb Farm in Coventry, Connecticut, and Madalene Hill, who founded Hilltop Herb Farm and later built the gardens at Round Top, Texas. In Madalene’s book, Southern Herb Growing, I was really proud that she had a few pictures in the front of her book of my first herb gardens. After her book came out, she came to my place and did a class and book signing. I have always admired Emelie Tolley and all of her books, and she and I have been friends for many years. In my book, Herbs: Growing and Using the Plants of Romance, Emelie wrote the forward. She came many times over the years and did stories on my gardens and business, and I was thrilled to visit her in New York City at her country home in NY. I have also always been inspired by Jeanne Rose. She came years ago and did a class and book signing at my place, and I have visited her in San Francisco. Betsy Williams has always been an inspiration to me. I think that my biggest inspiration is everyday herb gardeners whom we meet and we can share with. As James Beard, the famous chef, said, “We learn from each other and end up teaching ourselves.” Also, I have always been inspired by Lady Bird Johnson. She came into my store many times over the years and would have me make things for her to give as gifts. Her love of nature and wildflowers has done so much for our island home, Earth.
For many business owners, they must sacrifice a lot in terms of personal time and preferences. But, there are also rewards in being the curator of your own products/services. What has been your driving philosophy as you’ve grown URBANherbal?
BV: Yes, having your own business is a huge sacrifice, personally in man hours and struggles. My biggest driving philosophy is: “Touching all of your senses, daily. Hearing, Touching, Seeing, Tasting, Smelling and our Sixth Sense, our Spirit.” I strongly feel that these things are where herbs can really affect our lives in spirit, balance, texture, space, and love.
What brings you the most joy in your herbal day?
BV: Making something that will help someone! Be it a small plant, a cologne, a room freshener, a cream to make someone feel better, or a simple herb vinegar or seasoning that will enhance someone’s food.
Herbs have many stories to tell, from historical uses to modern industries. Do you have a favorite herb story that you find yourself telling over and over again?
BV: I think that hearing people tell me that they can’t handle being around scents. I find that it is because they have been around “commercial scents” that are not good for you, and they are not natural! So many people tell me that they can wear my scents, and they don’t have a negative reaction. Herbs and flowers are nature’s courtesans. They elevate our moods, fragrance the air around us, and so many are edible and medicinal. For instance, rosemary and lavender can be used for fragrance, in foods, and in healing. You should have herbs and flowers around you daily!
Herbs aren’t the first thing people think of when they hear “Texas.” What do you think people are most surprised to learn about herbs or herb growing in your neck of the woods?
BV: I think that when they find out how easy most herbs are to grow around here and then find out how much they can enhance our lives and they are really surprised! The fact that they attract butterflies, bees, birds, and release beautiful scents in your gardens and in pots, and trigger so many memories through your senses. The air you breathe affects not just your health but also your mood.
I’m not going to ask you your favorite herb, because that is often like picking a favorite child. Instead, what handful of herbs would you recommend every new herbie explore (for various reasons/uses)?
BV: Lavender for scent, Beauty, healing, and flavor.
Rosemary for scent, beauty, healing, and flavor.
Thyme for scent, beauty, healing, and flavor.
Roses for beauty, scent, healing, and flavor.
Rose geraniums for healing, scent, and cooking.
Chives for flavor and the beauty of their flowers.
Sage for beauty, scent, flavor, and healing.
Basil for flavor, fragrance, healing, and beauty.
Lemon verbena for fragrance, aromatherapy, scent, beauty, and magnificent flavor for foods and drinks.
These are just a few of my favorite herbs…….
How would you characterize your road to herbal admiration and its impact on your life?
BV: Working with herbs and plants, one gets to know their essence and understand they are not just a commodity. The gardener and herbalist becomes rooted to the ground with them as part of God’s creation. We are trying to be stewards of our environment. It is not an accident that the humus, or the soil, comes from the same word. It’s the base from which everything grows. Gardening and my spiritual life go together. I just can’t imagine a day in my life that I’m not using herbs in some way. I really relate to this simple quote from the designer and architect, Ettore Softass, “basil-flavored architecture,” as a way of expressing the idea of achieving much with little.
Lastly, if you were to give advice to someone embarking on their own herbal “quest,” such as starting a business or a garden, etc., what key elements have you found to be the most important for successful endeavors?
BV: Make sure you are passionate about what you want to do with herbs! Do everything you can to educate yourself about herbs. Get to know other herb lovers through organizations like The Herb Society of America or garden clubs, or online groups, because that is one of the best ways to learn. Be creative about what you are going to do. Remember, you are going to have to work hard! Have a strategy, write it down. Bounce your ideas off of friends and family.

NATIONAL DRESS UP YOUR PET DAY
Tumblr media
NATIONAL DRESS UP YOUR PET DAY
National Dress Up Your Pet Day on January 14th provides a special day to celebrate with your pet and show of their fashion style. Pets do become part of one’s family. Whether you take a visit to the groomer or take it a step further and dress up in matching outfits, be sure your pet companion is safe and comfortable.
Please remember to keep your pets safe and comfortable in the pet clothing and costumes that you choose.
Tips for dressing up your pet:
If your pet just doesn’t like dressing up, let them sit this holiday out.
Be sure it fits. Restricting movement or ability to breathe can cause injury or illness.
Many pets like to chew. Avoid loose or dangling pieces which can cause choking hazards.
HOW TO OBSERVE #NationalDressUpYourPetDay
The name of the day tells you how to celebrate it; dress your pets up! Keep your pet’s comfort first and foremost. A visit to the groomer for a bit of polish and trim always improves our pet companion’s appearance. Get a snazzy bandana, bow, or collar to show off the fresh do. How about a sweater for chilly, long walks? If the tutu is too, too much, your pooch will let you know. Be sure to share your favorite pet poses with us. We love to see how you #CelebrateEveryDay. Use #DressUpYourPetDay to post on social media.

ANIMAL SPOTLIGHT: JANUARY 2021 from Fredericksburg SPCA
Harper & Lucinda are from the case we assisted with back in August on the Tennessee border, where 53 dogs were removed off of a property. Undersocialized and fearful, a shelter environment was no place for these beauty queens. Being placed in foster care with our #FredFosterFam has helped them blossom and feel safe! They absolutely adore being around other dogs, so if you are looking for a BFF for your BFF, these girls would be a great choice. Harper and Lucinda can go to separate homes or go together, but they must go to a home with another dog to help their confidence keep blossoming! Here’s what their foster mom had to say:
“It was such a joy to have both Harper & Lucinda with us on Christmas Day! Lucinda didn’t really understand the hype of all the toys but she started playing with them the next day. The ball is her favorite. Harper was not amused with me dressing her up as a reindeer!Lucinda has started to come out of her shell a little more. She is Harper’s little shadow, following her everywhere! Harper has been a good leader for her. Luci will come up to me for some pets now, after she realized what a cuddle bug Harper is with me. They visited with some friends and did a couple of hikes this weekend! Harper is my explorer that loves to be outside. Lucinda prefers to let her energy out indoors, running laps around the house!Harper & my pup, Reia have bonded so well together. I catch them cuddling quite often now. She will definitely be a hard one to let go”
You will not see Harper or Lucinda listed on the website just yet, but they are available for foster-to-adopt pending their spay surgeries! If you are interested, please reach out to us! [email protected]

QAnon: The alternative religion that’s coming to your church
Tumblr media
(RNS) — It’s a rough time to be a pastor. An election year, national racial unrest and a global pandemic each challenged the usual methods of ministry. Taken together, many church leaders are facing the traditional post-vacation ingathering season with a serious case of burnout.
But there’s another challenge that pastors I spoke with say is on the rise in their flocks. It is taking on the power of a new religion that’s dividing churches and hurting Christian witness.
Mark Fugitt, senior pastor of Round Grove Baptist Church in Miller, Missouri, recently sat down to count the conspiracy theories that people in his church are sharing on Facebook. The list was long. It included claims that 5G radio waves are used for mind control; that George Floyd’s murder is a hoax; that Bill Gates is related to the devil; that masks can kill you; that the germ theory isn’t real; and that there might be something to Pizzagate after all.
“You don’t just see it once,” said Fugitt. “If there’s ever anything posted, you’ll see it five to 10 times. It’s escalating for sure.”
Conspiracy theories — grand narratives that seek to prove that powerful actors are secretly controlling events and institutions for evil purposes — are nothing new in the U.S. But since 2017, a sort of ur-conspiracy theory, QAnon, has coalesced in online forums and created millions of believers. “To look at QAnon is to see not just a conspiracy theory but the birth of a new religion,” wrote Adrienne LaFrance in The Atlantic in June.
Named after “Q,” who posts anonymously on the online bulletin board 4chan, QAnon alleges that President Donald Trump and military officials are working to expose a “deep state” pedophile ring with links to Hollywood, the media and the Democratic Party. Since its first mention some three years ago, the theory has drawn adherents looking for a clear way to explain recent disorienting global events.
Once the fascination of far-right commentators and their followers, QAnon is no longer fringe. With support from Trump and other elected officials, it has gained credibility both on the web and in the offline world: In Georgia, a candidate for Congress has praised Q as “a mythical hero,” and at least five other congressional hopefuls from Illinois to Oregon have voiced support.
One scholar found a 71% increase in QAnon content on Twitter and a 651% increase on Facebook since March.
Jon Thorngate is the pastor at LifeBridge, a nondenominational church of about 300 in a Milwaukee suburb. In recent months, he said, his members have shared “Plandemic,” a half-hour film that presents COVID-19 as a moneymaking scheme by government officials and others, on Facebook. Members have also passed around a now-banned Breitbart video that promotes hydroxychloroquine as a cure for the virus.
Thorngate, one of the few pastors who would go on the record among those who called QAnon a real problem in their churches, said that only five to 10 members are actually posting the videos online. But in conversations with other members, he’s realized many more are open to conspiracy theories than those who post.
Thorngate attributes the phenomenon in part to the “death of expertise” — a distrust of authority figures that leads some Americans to undervalue long-established measures of competency and wisdom. Among some church members, he said, the attitude is, “I’m going to use church for the things I like, ignore it for the things I don’t and find my own truth.
“That part for us is concerning, that nothing feels authoritative right now.”
A demonstrator holds a QAnon sign as he walks at a protest April 19, 2020, in Olympia, Washington, opposing the state’s stay-at-home order to slow the coronavirus outbreak. Washington Gov. Jay Inslee has blasted President Donald Trump’s calls to “liberate” parts of the country from stay-at-home and other orders designed to combat the spread of the coronavirus. Inslee said Trump is fomenting a potentially deadly insubordination among his followers before the pandemic is contained. (AP Photo/Elaine Thompson)
For years in the 1980s and ’90s, U.S. evangelicals, above nearly any other group, warned what will happen when people abandon absolute truth (which they located in the Bible), saying the idea of relative truth would lead to people believing whatever confirms their own inward hunches. But suspicion of big government, questioning of scientific consensus (on evolution, for example) and a rejection of the morals of Hollywood and liberal elites took hold among millennial Christians, many of whom feel politically alienated and beat up by mainstream media. They are natural targets for QAnon.
There’s no hard data on how many Christians espouse QAnon. But Ed Stetzer, executive director of the Billy Graham Center at Wheaton College, noted that distrust of mainstream news sources “can feed a penchant for conspiracy theories.”
A 2018 poll from BGC found that 46% of self-identified evangelicals and 52% of those whose beliefs tagged them as evangelical “strongly agreed that the mainstream media produced fake news.” It also found that regular church attendance (at least once a month) correlated to believing that mainstream media promulgates fake news (77% compared with 68% of those who attend less regularly).
Jared Stacy said the spread of conspiracy theories in his church is particularly affecting young members. The college and young adult pastor of Spotswood Baptist Church in Fredericksburg, Virginia, Stacy said some older members are sharing Facebook content that links the coronavirus to Jeffrey Epstein and secret pedophile rings. He says his and other pastors’ job is to teach that conspiracy theories are not where Christians should find a basis for reality.
“My fear … is that Jesus would not be co-opted by conspiracy theories in a way that leads the next generation to throw Jesus out with the bathwater,” Stacy said, “that we’re not able to separate the narrative of taking back our country from Jesus’ kingdom narrative.”
Others are concerned the theories will become grounds for more mistrust. “Young people are exiting the church because they see their parents and mentors and pastors and Sunday school teachers spreading things that even at a young age they can see through,” said Jeb Barr, the senior pastor of First Baptist Church of Elm Mott outside Waco, Texas. He said conspiracy theories are “extremely widespread and getting worse” among his online church networks.
“Why would we listen to my friend Joe … who’s telling me about Jesus who also thinks that Communists are taking over America and operating a pedophile ring out of a pizza restaurant? … Why would we be believed?”
But Barr and other pastors I spoke with are reticent to police church members’ social media conduct. Instead, they try to teach broader principles. “Christians are meant to be agents of hope, to be peacemakers; the Bible says we’re not to be quarrelsome,” said Barr. “We’re not to be the ones spreading fear and division and anger.”
Barr also teaches critical thinking skills and encourages his members to read “boring news.” He will recommend news sources that are credible.
But teaching media literacy isn’t enough, precisely because QAnon thrives on a narrative of media cover-up.
Fugitt said it’s not effective to tell conspiracy spreaders that what they are sharing online is false. “Nobody joins a cult. I don’t think anybody shares a conspiracy theory either because they believe it’s truth.” Rather, he tries to address the dehumanizing language of QAnon theories that equate certain people with evil. History is replete with examples of where such language can lead.
“I can’t hate another person, but boy if I can make them less than human, that’s the Crusades, that’s Jewish persecution throughout history, that’s racial issues hand over fist there.”
In a fraught political moment, the pastors I spoke with worried that taking on QAnon, by addressing politics directly, would divide the church.
But QAnon is more than a political ideology. It’s a spiritual worldview that co-opts many Christian-sounding ideas to promote verifiably false claims about actual human beings.
QAnon has features akin to syncretism — the practice of blending traditional Christian beliefs with other spiritual systems, such as Santeria. Q explicitly uses Bible verses to urge adherents to stand firm against evil elites. One charismatic church based in Indiana hosts two-hour Sunday services showing how Bible prophecies confirm Q’s messages. Its leaders tell the congregation to stop watching mainstream media (even conservative media) in favor of QAnon YouTube channels and the Qmap website.
And it’s having life-and-death effects: It’s hampering the work of anti-sex trafficking organizations. The FBI has linked it to violence and threats of violence. And its adherents are downplaying the threat of COVID and thus putting others’ lives at risk.
The earliest Christians contended with syncretism in the form of Gnosticism, which blended elements of Greek philosophy and Zoroastrianism with Christianity, emphasizing the good-evil spirit-flesh divide as well as secret divine knowledge (Greek: gnosis is “knowledge”). Early church fathers such as Irenaeus and Tertullian battled Gnostic ideas, rejecting them as heresy.
At a time when church leaders are having to host digital church and try to meet members’ needs virtually, the idea of adding “fight heresy” to their to-do list might sound exhausting. But a core calling of church leaders is to speak the truth in love. It’s not loving to allow impressionable people to be taken in by falsehood. Nor is it loving to allow them to spread falsehood and slander to others.
“Conspiracy theories thrive on a sort of cynicism that says, ‘We see a different reality that no one else sees,’” said Stacy. “Paul says to take every thought captive — addressing conspiracy theories is part of that work.”

Schmidt Christmas Market is excited to bring you another one of our wintertime features detailing all of the exciting places you could see around the world over Christmas. Today we will be talking all about one of our favorite Eastern European cities, Copenhagen. This is a town older than the United States itself with plenty of history to show for it. So let's get started. Sign up to get our blog in a weekly email
Top 10 Christmas Activities In Copenhagen For Guests To The City
Schmidt Christmas Market has scoured through all of the available attractions within Copenhagen and narrowed it down to the top 10. Hopefully, this is a short enough list that you'll be able to knock every single one of them out before you go home if you decide to go and visit Copenhagen this year. Even if you don't, it will be a lot of fun trying.
1. Check Out The Julemarked At Tivoli Gardens
Christmas Decor galore is found at one of the most impressive outdoor gardens in the world. While the theme parks section is only open in the summery months of the year, the location is still popular when the rides are closed. That is thanks to the prolific abundance of outdoor Christmas markets. Vendors will line up their stalls all around the square, where you are able to bargain with them and hopefully find some new Christmas decorations. It's one of the best ways to get hands on experience with the culture of the people of Copenhagen yourself. It is hard to beat it this time of year.
2. Go And Visit Hotel D'angleterre & Magasin Du Nord
If you are as obsessed with the best Christmas Decorations as we are here, then you will absolutely die when you catch a glimpse of this magnificent hotel. While the actual cost of staying at the hotel can be quite pricey, their brilliant Christmas Decor display each year has become a tradition for even natives of the area to go and see. You simply do not catch this kind of glamour in most areas of the world, even when it is Christmas time. If you happen to have the money, it is also one of the most phenomenal places you could stay while in Copenhagen over the holidays.
3. Test Your Skills On The Ice At Frederiksberg Runddel
A lot of people have never gotten the chance to try ice-skating. Well, while you are in Copenhagen, whether you have tried it in the past were not, you must go to the Fredericksburg ice-skating rink. It is one of the most popular areas in the city. Fredericksburg is technically a tiny community within Copenhagen that is its own city. The ice-skating rink has skate rentals, for you do not need to bring your own ice skates. Make sure you get there before the sun sets if you still want some daylight while you are skating. Otherwise, once it hits 4 o'clock, you will get the option to use the light of the Christmas décor that is abundantly spread throughout the park.
4. Copenhagen Christmas Food Walking Tour
Copenhagen has a ton of guided tours available. One of the best Christmas-themed tours you can check out while you are in the city is the Christmas Food walking tour. Denmark is considered to be one of the world's foodie capitals and has a long history of culinary traditions. This store is located in the most popular food market of Copenhagen, Torvehallerne. Throughout the experience, you will taste everything from candy to sausage and even wine.
5. Copenhagen's Christmas Spirit By: Ourway Tours In Copenhagen
This is not a specific section of the city but rather the entire city itself. Christmas Décor is thrown up all over the entire area every year over the holidays. This tour brings you through nine of the most popular spots found within the Danish capital and drops you off at King's Garden. Throughout the experience, you will learn some of the histories of the city and check out all of the beautiful new decorations thrown up in the holiday spirit.
6. Denmark's Forest Tower
The Forest Tower is one of the most famous attractions within the entire country of Denmark. It is located within one of the world's densest forests and has been rated by Times Magazine as one of the world's greatest places to visit. There are tour groups that leave the city of Copenhagen daily to go visit the Forest Tower. It is located just outside of the city limits and is perfect for when you feel like escaping the city life for a few hours. At the top of the Forest Tower, you will be greeted by one of Denmark's most magnificent vistas. It is the perfect getaway for the nature lover that wants to travel over Christmas.
7. Magic Christmas Tour In Copenhagen By: Fun Top Fun Denmark
Christmas Decorations seem to be very popular throughout Copenhagen's city if you judge by all of the guided tours that show them off. This is another guided tour definitely worth checking out only available over the holidays. You will be given a professional tour guide who will personally guide you through the most decorated areas of Copenhagen. On the way, they will read the volume with various Christmas stories and tales from the history of Copenhagen. At the end of the trip you'll be at another one of the attractions on our list: the Rosenborg Castle.
8. Conger Rosenborg Castle
Rosenborg Castle is located right in one of the most popular parks in the city: The King's garden. The initial Castle was erected by the Scandinavian King Christian the fourth. It is over 400 years old and has a ton of history. Throughout its halls are numerous treasures that were once adorned by the country's previous monarchs. Inside of the Great Hall can see the coronation drones and three life-size lion statues made entirely of silver. If you've never gotten the chance to see a European Castle that is even older than the United States in person, it is an experience that you cannot miss out on without regretting it later.
9. Learn The History Of Nyhavn
The English translation of the name for this little hamlet is New Harbor. Although the name might try to convince you otherwise, this little port village is quite old with tons of history. Throughout the city, there are canals that fairy passengers throughout the area similar to Venice. While in the past, the area was considered to be hit or miss thanks to the bodacious sailors who used to frequent the bars. Today the area has been restored and is now the most popular tourist attraction in Copenhagen. It's a great place to go and check out, with over 80 different tours available within this tiny area there are more than enough options to keep you busy.
10. Relax And Reflash At Copenhot Saunas
Of course, after checking off all nine of the other attractions we have discussed so far, you must be exhausted. Luckily, Copenhagen is home to some of the world's most famous hot saunas. Scandinavian culture places a lot more value on saunas than most other Western nations. There are plenty of different places that you can choose from within the city limits, but Copenhot is probably the one worth checking out the most. This is not actually located in one place but on top of a boat that cruises through the canals. On top of the boat, there are several different saunas with hot water to relax while you float through the city. Enjoy all the sites, and remember to take some pictures.

If you are truly adventurous, you can take a dip into the canal's icy cold waters before getting into the sauna. This is a tradition descended from the ancient Vikings, actually.

Bell Harig Home Inspections Raises Awareness On Importance Of Sewer Line Inspections
Culpeper, VA based Bell Harig Home Inspections is taking steps to raise awareness of the vital nature of home maintenance in Fredericksburg, with a particular emphasis on sewer line inspections. As part of this effort, they recently published a blog post that sheds light on sewer lines and their function. The article is available here: https://bellharig.com/fredericksburg-va-home-a-battlefield.
Tumblr media
The author of the blog states, “There are pipes responsible for wastewater drainage that need to be inspected properly by a professional team. Such pipes will pose a threat to a home if they are not properly checked.” She adds, “Issues such as sewer sag will cause the pipeline to flow in an irregular shape, which will in turn cause water to leak. It prevents water from going up, and all the waste and water will then collect at the site of the sag.”
The wastewater will not be able to drain as a result of this blockage. Fortunately for homeowners, the company utilizes new inspection techniques that will help them discover such problems in the sewer line. Eric Harig of Bell Harig Home Inspections says, “An inspection carried out by sewer camera will help keep the line in proper condition whether it is a commercial or private property. The technology will also help identify any further issues that owners of the property in question should be aware of, especially those that would inhibit further attempts to perform maintenance in any way.”
Harig continues, "The sewer camera inspection is an easy process. The camera is sent into the sewer line, at which point its high-resolution sensors will help us check for any minor issues that will cause a problem in later stages. Such issues can take the form of leaks, breaks or cracks in the sewer pipes.” He observes that while property owners may consider inspections an unnecessary expense, they should consider this form of maintenance an investment that will prevent them from having to pay for much costlier repairs if an issue in their sewer line goes untended for too long. Culpeper residents in need of professional sewer line services can find Bell Harig Home Inspections at this location: https://www.google.com/maps?cid=3797755706293345424.
“After the camera detects a defect in the system, the team on site will present the property owner with a list of suggestions that will rectify the problem at hand. They will also be able to offer advice to help tackle issues such as a sewer overflow. Harig states that grease, for instance, is a substance that has a high tendency to block sewage systems. He advises, “Avoid pouring cooking oil in the kitchen sink, and never flush grease in the toilet. When people pour it down in the toilet, the substance will then become a solid and hinder the drainage system. Instead, you should dispose of it in the garbage.” Disposal procedures should also be appropriate to the item. People should not flush any fibrous food, for instance, because it could damage the sewer line. Notably, coldwater can exacerbate any existing problems since it allows certains liquids to solidify faster.
Harig states that homeowners should seek a plumber’s assistance when they notice a blockage in their pipes. Furthermore, the drain should be cleaned every month to avoid blockages. White vinegar and baking soda can be used to clean the bathtub and sink, particularly because they are primary sources for drainage. He adds, "Trees and plants should be situated away from homes if possible since the roots often cause issues with drains and sewer lines. Shrubbery may pose a problem too if left unchecked.” He notes that in most circumstances, performing regular maintenance and having inspections carried out by a professional will help a homeowner avoid bigger complications in the future.
Maintenance also has the benefit of giving homeowners a more precise idea of the state of their sewer line. This gives them the opportunity to make further investments, should they wish, that will reduce the risk of damage to their pipes. In many cases, this will also raise the value of the property itself.
Homeowners who wish to learn more may reach out to Eric Harig directly to follow up on any further inquiries. More resources can be found on the company’s website as well, including all their blog posts.
