Combining 1980s-style synthwave with industrial and heavy metal, he seductively welcomes his listeners to the dark side with his macabre instrumental music. Hace años, un estudiante le preguntó a la antropóloga Margaret Mead cuál consideraba ella que era el primer signo de civilización en una cultura. El estudiante esperaba que Mead hablara de anzuelos, ollas de barro o piedras de moler, es decir, la tecnología o las herramientas usadas.
Pero Mead dijo que el primer signo de civilización en una cultura antigua era un fémur que se había roto y luego sanado. Mead explicó que en el reino animal, si te rompes una pierna, mueres. No puedes huir del peligro, ir al río a tomar algo o buscar comida. Eres carne de bestias que merodean. Ningún animal sobrevive a una pierna rota el tiempo suficiente para que el hueso sane.
Un fémur roto que se ha curado es evidencia de que alguien se ha tomado el tiempo para quedarse con el que se cayó, ha vendado la herida, le ha llevado a un lugar seguro y le ha ayudado a recuperarse. Mead dijo que ayudar a alguien en las dificultades es el punto donde comienza la civilización.

Głównym bohaterem "Guns Akimbo" jest Miles (Daniel Radcliffe) pracownik niższego szczebla w korporacji, która zajmuje się tworzeniem gier z modelem biznesowym opartym na mikrotransakcjach. Miles, ciągle dociskany przez fit - managera (który nęka pracowników dzierżąc w dłoni shaker ze świeżutkim białkiem), stracił już nadzieję na to, że zawojuje branżę gier video. Jako klasyczny, stereotypowy nerd mieszka w swojej norze wypchanej gadżetami, figurkami, a po odejściu od firmowego monitora siada przed ten domowy. Tutaj wyładowuje frustracje trollując, hejtując, wygrażając w komentarzach w brutalnych widowiskach pay per view, najczęściej tych pochodzących od Skizm, firmy, której sztandarowym produktem są potyczki na żywo w terenach zurbanizowanych. I właśnie takim jednym komentarzem zwraca uwagę nadzorującego rozrywkę Riktora (Ned Dennehy pamiętny przeciwnik Nicolasa Cage'a z "Mandy"), który odpuścić zniewagi nie zamierza (zatem uważajcie przy komentowaniu tej i kolejnych recenzji).
Razem z silnorękimi składa wizytę u Milesa i nie pytając o zdanie robi z niego uczestnika kolejnej potyczki. Za pomocą śrub przytwierdza na stałe pistolety do jego dłoni, daje określony czas i godnego przeciwnika - Nix (Samara Weaving). Miles oczywiście nieprzygotowany na taką atrakcję zostaje wrzucony w sam środek bitwy tak jak stał, albo tak jak leżał na kanapie w stroju codziennym, szlafroku i bokserkach. Wygląda jak kiepski dowcip z wyuzdanych, dopieszczonych wizerunków bohaterów gier komputerowych i takich samych avatarów.
To kino z ADHD, szalone połączenie wszystkich znanych filmowych technik, celna satyra wypełniona przemocą. Jason Lei Howden jako główną inspirację dla swojego stylu wskazuje filmy Paula Verhoevena, gdzie przy brutalnych scenach okraszonych czarnym humorem, twórca zawsze starał się wstawić komentarz dotyczący społecznych zachowań. Jason Lei Howden podąża podobną ścieżką od czasu swojego debiutu "Śmierćgasm", a jego najnowszy "Guns Akimbo" udowadnia tylko, że jako filmowiec ma talent do kreowania szalonych wizji. Estetycznie stoi miejscami całkiem blisko teledysków Setha Ickermana (Raphaël Hernandez) z muzyką Carpenter Bruta (Franck Hueso), a tempem i wykonaniem zbliża się do filmu "Hardcore Henry" Ilya Naishullera.
"Guns Akimbo" to doskonale zmontowany, przepełniony energią film akcji z protagonistą, którego czujemy i rozumiemy. Jego niezdarność nie jest nam obca, a wszystkie zagrania w mig przyswajamy, jednocześnie kibicujemy temu nieporadnemu życiowo bohaterowi. Zabawne perturbacje i problemy Miles'a wynikają naturalnie z jego aktualnego położenia i tych przytwierdzonych na amen spluw. Zwykłe czynności są co najmniej problematyczne, a dochodzi przecież pościg pierwszoligowej zawodniczki i próba ponownego rozpalenia serca u byłej dziewczyny. "Guns Akimbo" zręcznie lawiruje pomiędzy satyrą (jest jasna i klarowna, widzowie oddają się coraz bardziej agresywnym rozrywkom, a model pay per view wymusza na producentach coraz wulgarniejszą i bardziej krwawą wymowę własnych produktów), a solidnym kinem akcji, które, co ważne, nigdy nie opuszcza konwencji i nie staje się autoparodią (jak chociażby seria "Za szybcy za wściekli").
Jason Lei Howden wie jak stworzyć sympatycznego bohatera (wielka zasługa Daniela Radcliffa, który owszem, kontynuuje ciąg swoich dziwnych ekranowych osobowości, ale tym razem nie czuć tu ani grama fałszu), jak wymieszać gatunki i wykorzystać potencjał zaangażowanych pionów technicznych. "Guns Akimbo" wygląda świetnie, łączy style, wykorzystuje świetne muzyczne przeboje, bawi się odniesieniami, które wypadają wręcz porażająco upiornie (w trakcie sceny z młotkiem usłyszymy "Can't touch this" Mc Hammera), a Samara Weaving nie jest wcale tutaj umieszczona na dokładkę, ale stanowi świadomą bohaterkę, pełną ikry, twardą sztukę, która w mig zakumplowałaby się z Harley Quinn.
"Guns Akimbo" to nie tylko komiksowy sznyt, ale przepełniona werwą ilustracja wszystkich nerdowskich sennych marzeń z "od zera do bohatera" na czele.

8th January, Week 4.
Furi.
Today, a friend suggested looking at a game called “Furi”; an action shoot 'em up game developed and published by indie studio The Game Bakers. The soundtrack is purely electronic dance music, composed by various artists, such as The Toxic Avenger, Waveshaper, Carpenter Brut.
All of these artists are established in their style of music and collectively made a compelling and subjectively impressive OST for the game (Furi : Complete Soundtrack // by Various Artists, 2018). The soundtrack consists mainly of music similar to that seen in Blood Dragon, emulating the classic synthwave/synthpop 80s style, with big snares, flat kicks and lots of retro synthesiser use (Wetmore, 2018). Whilst the overall tempo of the soundtrack is roughly 110 to 125 bpm, the style and punchiness helps support the choice of music to be made for Project Island.
The artists
The Toxic Avenger
Simon Delacroix, who hails from France is an Electro, Synthwave and House producer and DJ. He has been producing music publicly since ~2009 (Lonnie, 2011). One notable track from him that helps sum up the music he makes is ‘Kids’, which plays on loop when visiting his website as well (The Toxic Avenger - Kids (Official Video), 2016).
The music he made for Furi consisted of downtempo 110bpm with elements of synthwave and darkwave, whilst staying more modern than the majority of the full OST. His track ‘My Only Chance’ playing at 1:10:10 demonstrates this and is a big inspiration for the track that will accompany the boss fight scenario in Project Island. The reason that this track is an inspiration is due to the emphasised kick and snare in the mix that contribute to the punchy and adrenaline inducing nature of the scenario itself.
However, this track is a little too positive, busy and crowded, which is something that the Project Island music aims to do the opposite of. As mentioned in a previous post, busy music is more likely to distract the player from the task at hand and hinder their gaming experience.
Waveshaper
Tom Andersson, a synthwave artist from Sweden has been releasing music since ~2014. Andersson also composed tracks for the Furi OST (Vehling, 2017).
His track ‘A Monster’ which plays at 1:03:33 is a synthesiser orientated atmospheric composition that has a long, drumless intro, with heavy use of minor notes and drawn out pads in a single note. These pads are accompanied by brighter plucks, as well as pitched down plucks that play in the background. The second half of the track introduces the same style of synthwave drums that have a pronounced kick and snare.
The first half of this track is an inspiration for the ambush scenario in Project Island, due to the factors mentioned above such as long drawn out notes, pitched down plucks and no drums.
One reason that this track is not a perfect fit is due to the long drawn out notes having no automation or alteration in velocity or EQ, something that is intended for the ambush scenario music.
Carpenter Brut
Franck Hueso, better known by his stage name Carpenter Brut, is a synthwave artist from Poitiers, France, who has been releasing music since ~2012 (Neilstein, 2016).
The track he made for Furi ‘Enraged’ encapsulates the mood and pace planned for the defending an objective scenario. The reason that this track is a good inspiration is due to the generally fast sounding pace, even though the tempo is similar to that of the rest of the OST. Other reasons include the 16th note choppy lead synth and bassline underneath the drums, which helps give that illusion of the tempo being faster than it is, as well as vocal/synthesised pads on top that add to the tense and energetic atmosphere.
Whilst these traits are inspirational and will no doubt help shape the track for Project Island, the busyness of ‘Enraged’ would not fit the type of scenario that will be implemented in the map.
Additional info
Whilst this OST and the music mentioned from these artists are great inspiration for the proposed music, these tracks will not completely define said music, as it needs to fit the map itself and not Furi. This reasoning is backed up by Sholler (2013) who argues that a game must have fitting music, in order to help create compelling gameplay and have an immersive experience for the player.

A perfect synthesis between dark synthwave from the 80′s and high energy metal. Very retro but this BAND (Yes, Mr.Brut is joined on stage by a drummer and guitarist, both in flesh) will hit you with a hammer. Wow !!

Siempre soy el que acaba mal, el día que querías comer en el auto a pesar del contagio quisiste verme y yo como estupido estuve de acuerdo. Pero cuando Franck quiere estar contigo, eso está mal, es un infantil, son niñerías, y te emputas. Cuando Oscar quiere verme ahí está el perro de Franck siempre esperando nada más a ver qué quiere Oscar.
Mi problema de siempre es quererte de más. Siempre me pasa por ser un puto sentimental.
Siempre termino puteado, regañado y tú terminas emputándote conmigo nada más por que pensé que podía estar un momento contigo. Bien pudiste haberme dicho que no desde un principio, o solo decirme que no se puede por la situación y ahí hubiera quedado, pero siempre tienes que regañarme y hacerme sentir que buscarte y quererte está mal.
Siempre todo lo hago mal, lo que yo pienso está mal, lo que digo está mal, todo en mi puta vida está mal. Y terminas enojándote conmigo por que como siempre lo que quiero está mal.
Neta que yo lo que menos quería era pelear y tener una discusión, yo no te pedí estar contigo por que quiera hacerte enojar y mucho menos por que quiera que me regañes... la neta me siento bien pendejo que lo que yo quiero nunca está bien, pero una ves más cuando vuelvas a tirar el hueso y a hablarme, ahí voy a estar como el gran perro imbécil que soy.

Escenario Bacardí Live, jueves 31 de mayo, 4 de la mañana. Según estas coordenadas espacio-temporales, estaríamos situándonos en el volcánico concierto que el francés Carpenter Brut ofreció hace unos días en Primavera Sound. Pero en realidad, el calendario y la localización a los que nos transportan los teclados de Franck Hueso (así se llama el músico que se enmascara detrás de este proyecto) es más intangible: los fotogramas de alguna película de terror de finales de los 70, principios de los 80, de aquellas que se encontraban rebuscando en las estanterías del videoclub.
Icono de la retrowave y a la vez artista que trasciende esta misma etiqueta, Carpenter Brut ha devuelto la vida a los sintetizadores de línea gruesa y oscura en tres EPs (luego recogidos en Trilogy) ya célebres y un álbum, Leather Teeth, que contienen la música que John Carpenter debe de silbar en la ducha. Aunque en directo sumen guitarra y batería, el misterioso músico de Poitiers (esconde su identidad y su rostro con tanto celo como en su día Daft Punk) se ha convertido en uno de los nombres de culto de la electrónica actual. Y es que al margen de los instrumentos que utilice en escena, Carpenter Brut en directo va a por ti. Tenle miedo, tenle mucho miedo.
