Boys from County Hell. It’s a film I wasn’t expecting anything out of when I walked into the cinema. I can happily say that this film has been one of my favourite films of the last couple of months.

Tutorial #01
How to make gifs like the ones I made in this gifset.
End result:

any questions ask me!
So, first of all you're gonna need a couple of different videos/scenes to gif. I suggest using HD trailers and teasers on youtube (look for 720p and 1080p!) and downloading them with a video downloader like VDownloader or an online video downloading site like this one.
Once you've done this you're gonna start by making three simple gifs of around 3-10 frames each so you get a total of 15 frames in the end after you combine them all. Make sure they're black and white as it's easier to work with the color fill option later and it also just looks a lot better, I think.
This is my first gif (sorry everything's in German!). Once you're happy with the way it looks (brightness, contrast, etc.) save it and make the next two gifs. Now close all three and open them again in Photoshop so it's not a smart element but you can see all of the frames like so:
This is gonna be my "base gif" so it has the most frames. I usually choose 10 frames for my base gif.
General info: Layers are the pictures on the right and frames the pictures at the bottom in the time line. When you select a layer, it's always smart to select the frame as well so you can actually see what you're doing. Say you want to change something on the second frame, so you select the second layer but still have the first frame selected then you will still change the second frame but all the while you're just gonna see the first frame. I hope this makes sense. Anyway, once you're finished editing a layer/frame and you go to copy/paste the frames, make sure the first frame is selected and only the first layer has the eye next to the thumbnail, meaning it's visible. You're gonna figure this out while you're doing this, though.
Now comes the fun part!
We're gonna add three effects to this gif:
1. Distortion
2. 3D
3. Color Fill
1. Distortion
Decide which part of your gif you want to distort. I'm gonna use frames 2 and 3. Select the frames you want to distort and copy them.
Now open a new document with the same width and height (mine is 245px by 260px) and paste those frames in here.
Simply delete the white frame after you past them. Now, whenever you add changes to the layers make sure that this box here is UNCHECKED (it should say something like "propagate first layer" in English, I think):
Alright, I want to distort this gif so basically what you're gonna do now is you're gonna use any selection tool you want (square, circle, lasso, ...) and select a part of your gif. Copy and paste this part and then move it around until you're happy with the way it looks. Again, make sure that box is unchecked!
I like the way this looks, so I'm gonna select the layer with the selection, right click and select "merge down" (again, sorry it's German) and always make sure that box is unchecked! Your gif should now look something like this:
Now you repeat the same steps with your second layer. Play around with shapes, copy/paste, merge down and always make sure that box is unchecked. Here's what mine looks like:
Now select those two frames in the time line, copy them and paste them back into your original gif and delete the original frames you just edited.
2. 3D
Next I would like to add a 3D effect to a part of my gif. Again, decide which frames you're going to use and copy and paste them into the document you used for editing the last frames. I'm going to use frames 7 and 8.
Creating a 3D effect is a lot simpler than it seems, really. Select the first layer (make sure the box is unchecked, as always) and copy it by pessing Ctrl + J.
Now select the copy of your first frame (as always, make sure the box is unchecked) and go to Layer > Layer Style (I don't know what it's called in English exactly but it's gotta be something with "style" I think?) > Filling Options (or something like that ... it's the first one, anyway).
You should now get a window that looks like this:
Uncheck the last two boxes so the color on the right chages to blue/cyan. Click OK.
Now you're just going to select the copy of your first layer and move it (make sure that box is unchecked bla bla bla) to the left/right or up/down and WOAH it's suddenly 3D. Just move it around until you're happy with the way it looks, then right click and select "merge down". This is what mine looks like now:
You're gonna do the same thing with your second layer. I like to add some distortion or blurriness or whatever to the second frame though. Since you already know how to distort gifs I'm gonna show you how to smudge/blur them.
Select the second layer and make sure that box on top is unchecked. Now select the part of your gif you want to be smudged or wiggly or whatever you wanna call it. I'm gonna add this effect to Loki's eyes so I selected this area:
Now go to Filter > Distort > Shear and play around with the curve until you like the way it looks. Mine looks like this:
When you're happy with the way it looks, click OK and then pres Ctrl + D to deselect that area. Now just add the 3D effect again and we're done with that part. Select your two frames in the time line, copy them, paste them back into your original gif and delete the original frames you just edited.
3. Color Fill
The last effect I like to add is a (partial) color fill. As always, decide which frames you're going to use (I'm using the last two frames, so 9 and 10) and copy/paste them into the other document and make sure that box is unchecked in every layer.
I like it when at first only a part of the gif is filled in with a color so I'm gonna select the part I want to fill.
Now you're gonna go to Layer > New Fill Layer > Solid Color and a box like this should appear:
Just choose whatever you would like to fill it with. I'm gonna go with red.
Now set the mode to Multiply. You can change the opacity later.
Now another window should open where you can choose what color you want exactly. Just play around with it until you find one you like but make sure you remember what color you use exactly 'cause you're gonna need the SAME ONE later! I'm going with a very simple red.
It should look something like this now. Don't worry if it's too red now, we're gonna change the opacity in a second. Click OK when you're happy with the color. Then play around with the opacity of this layer until you think it looks good. Again, uncheck that box on top. I'm using an opacity of 85%.
Now right click that layer and select "merge down". Select your second layer and repeat the same steps as before (use the exact same color and opactiy as before or it will look weird) but this time you're gonna color the whole gif and not just a selection so it should look like this in the end:
Now select your frames in the timeline, copy them, paste them back into your base gif and delete the original frames you just edited. Your base gif is now finished and should look something like this:
What you're gonna do now is use some of these effects on your other gifs until you like the way they look. Then select the frames in the timeline, copy them and paste them into your base gif where you want it to flash. Make sure these gifs are only 2-3 frames long so you have a total of 15 frames in the end when all three gifs are combined. When you're finished it should look something like this:
If you want to, you can add some text to your gif, maybe make it flash or flicker as well, just go crazy with it! Always remember to uncheck that little box though and always select "merge down" and not "merge to one layer" (or whatever it's called) or anything else. This is how my gif looks at the moment:
I feel like the gif could use some text though, so I'm gonna copy/paste the frames I want to add the text to, add the text and edit it until I'm happy and paste them back into my base gif. The procedure is always the same, really. Go crazy with it! Especially for adding text I would recommend editing each frame on its own so just copy/paste and edit one frame at a time. It's a lot easier to do and keep track of.
Here's what my gif looks like with some text:
Hm ... I think the part after the text looks a bit empty. How about some texture? Same procedure. Copy/paste the frames, edit them, paste them back in. (Sure, you could do that all in the same gif but I like to be organized and, trust me, it's a lot easier if you edit the frames separately!)
