i love taking adventure time figuratively in general but there's something very, very screwed and potent about f+c when you read simon petrikov as an addition allegory. Especially when you know how hard betty tried to "fix" him and know that it took her (a symbol of his life pre-crown and a catalyst to his insanity) ruining her own life trying to get him "back", reconnecting with him then, in a way, dying, to compell him to return to his sober, conscious state - but no more mentally stable than he was the first time he slipped. If anything, worse.

Then bring in the artistic success of a book he doesn't even remember writing (remember f+c was not the first book he wrote, with Betty, no less) to add insult to injury. Its relateable. Then his desperate attempts to psychically connect with Betty, when hes just had it shoved in his face again how he was "cooler" and more fun and made better stuff when he was under the influence, and failing so hard, is completely understandable.

Remember, Prismo doesn't control f+c and their world. Simon does. Simon manifested her as a real person. He did. It's HIS fault this is happening, even if he feigns ignorance. He did it deliberately, to affirm his decision. He made Fionna parrot back to him his OWN depressive spiral: paraphrased, "the magic is gone" "it was better before" "living like this isn't worth it", in the form of ANOTHER young girl on hard times who he ties himself into knots for trying to harness this "magic", that in his mind, is almost a necessity to have any chance at being able to bear day-to-day life. Remember how he called Marceline hours before he pulled Fionna out of his head, just to find out she didn't need him?

He's just fortunate he started to use Fionna to work through all his problems at the same time he was exacerbating them, and fortunate that it took her, however fictionalized, going from an excited participant and influencee of his intentions to relapse saying he was right, it was better before, we can't do this, to looking at him "before" and saying "wait, this is wrong, this is self-destructive, we shouldn't do this" to make him see that. When fionna got the magic back, everything was just even more horrifying, and she felt terrible about leading simon back into that, shoved into a freezer, metaphorically speaking. And that really makes sense to me idk. I get it. Idk how else to say it:

fionna's world being represented by a dandelion makes so much sense ... they're weeds. yet people make wishes through them, changing their whole meaning from something meant to be destroyed to something hopeful.

dandelions are also resilient and it makes sense that something associated with them would. you know. perservere despite the destruction caused by the scarab.

but ultimately i think what REALLY made me tear up over this is that dandelions are really boring plants. when you're a kid you blow on them and make your wish but they're not eyecatching or anything but still, fionna's final wish was for her old world to still exist as it was when she left it (> plain and simple. boring even).

like the moment she realized she would lose her friends, and that her friends might forget each other if the world got its magic back, she immediately decided she didn't want it and I think that ties back to the dandelion metaphor so well... like, do you really need magic to be real to find it everywhere? or can you turn something boring into something magical?

I find it completely hilarious to think after Simon was freed from the crown and got to be himself in Ooo that he and Finn have a close relationship that neither of them understand.

Finn views Simon as a fellow human, someone he saw at their lowest point and now is on the upswing and now they can be buddies and go on adventures together. He also wants to do sleepovers all the time, what a bro. Simon sure is fussy with him, like Jake sometimes is, must be because they're such good friends.

Simon meanwhile is going around to people in Ooo like 'why did you let a child/teenager live alone in a treehouse with a dog and access to weaponry while making him fight monsters?' and when no one stepped up, Simon unofficially claimed Finn as his own. He checks in regularly, goes over a brings groceries, cleans up the treehouse, educates Finn as best he can on human anatomy, culture, history as well as other stuff.

Its so obvious to everyone - especially Marcy who is laughing her ass off in the background - that the former Ice King is trying to parent Finn who doesn't get it and proceeds to friendzone the hell out of his father figure.

Alright so I want to add my own two cents to the latest Simon and Betty news from episode 8.

Already I’ve seen so many people talk about how their relationship could be toxic. However, to simply label it as such just because we got more detail completely misses the point of what their love story represents for both their characters. Their relationship isn’t toxic — it’s just a tragedy.

Yes, I agree with you guys — there is a bit of a power imbalance and implied age gap. But that doesn’t mean their relationship isn’t healthy. The main trait that is toxic is their co-dependency for one another as they become too blind in their passion that they cannot envision living without the other. Going to any extremes necessary to be together again.

That is the common theme of their story. This is why their love is a tragedy and it is what fuels both of their character arcs.

But we already know this. I personally love episode 8 because it gives us a glimpse of a “what if” for Simon and Betty. Besides the negatives we discuss earlier, they have mutual respect for one another. Betty idolizes him, but she also doesn’t shy away from pointing out new ways of thinking that he never considered. Simon doesn’t take advantage of this. In fact, he respects her knowledge and even goes along with her suggestions during their expeditions because they worked, even if they were a bit unconventional.

Also, to simply negate their relationship and label it “toxic” after being given this context completely undermines Betty’s character. She knew he would pick up the book they both reached for, so she left a note — knowing he would find it. And it worked.

Once they confessed, yeah, she could’ve still left for the Outback. I’m sure Simon would’ve let her go since they established they care for each other. He probably would’ve planned a trip to go after her. But the crucial detail is that she chose to stay.

And that is in line with her character. Time and time again, Betty has always chosen Simon before herself, even to her own downfall. There’s even an AT episode where they address this! To ignore this aspect of her character removes her agency. She chose Simon above all else, even at the start of their relationship! She chose him, and he chose her.

Who knows, maybe if the mushroom war never happened and the Simon never found the crown, they would’ve lived happily together. But their love story is not toxic — it’s a passion that would’ve been so lovely and pure had the circumstances been right. And that’s why it is a tragedy.

Not toxic, just a tragedy.

look sorry for the reference but simon's relationship to fionna is giving barbie movie vibes to me. she both exists and is 'real' in some capacity but is also a creation made by a person, and is therefore directly affected by her creator's thoughts and actions. simon is like america ferrera inadvertedly giving his fionna barbie thoughts about dying and just generally ruining the vibes of 'fionnaland' because he's so overwhelmingly depressed that it seeps into how he perceives that world in his mind

WELCOME TO PHIO'S EXTREMELY SELF INDULGENT AU HOUR!!!

This AU was meant to be posted on halloween but eh.... Happy Thanksgiving? HAHAHHA

still dont have a name for it, but basically, back in october i was suddenly hit with the need to have a halloween au, so now we have ghost-ified prismo and vampire/witch-ified scarab :D ( although didnt finish the scarab reference spread in time because uh, school and i lost motivation unfortunately )

au synopsis and rambling below the cut!!

the premise of this au is simple : scarab is a real estate agent whos known for his manners ( never barges in, always waits to be invited! though it is a little weird how he keeps asking to be let inside even if they already agreed that he was going to come over... ) and efficiency at his job - that is, convincing people to buy high-end housing for a good price. although his social skills need some... work, his ability to persuade people isnt something to be laughed at.

unfortunately for him, persuading the higher-ups is a completely different story - which he learned the hard way after flunking something big for the company. they dont choose to fire him, no. instead, they put him through a trial, assigning him to sell their most unprofitable property : the mansion in a small town locally known for being haunted by an "evil spirit". if scarab manages to sell it (for good profit) within six months, he is excused and is able to go on with his job. if not... well, best not to think about it, yes? after all, he'll succeed with ease - all he has to do is dispel any worries about some fake "ghost" that only exists as a result of filthy rumors. maybe clean up the place. not too hard, right?

meanwhile, stuck inside said mansion is an extremely bored prismo. hes been hangin around this place for like... how many years now? forty? a hundred? meh, all the same, lately the place has been quieter than usual. i mean- of course people dont just walk into a creepy mansion every day, but there would usually be at least a few bold kids or vloggers coming in now and then for him to entertain but even then they wouldn't stay long ( for obvious reasons ). and now, just some unbound spirits or dumb animals would pass by and thats about it. a guy can only entertain himself for so long, yknow?

that is, until today. when some posh-looking business man entered the premises and started snooping around ( whats the deal with that, by the way?? ). must be prismo's lucky day!! this is the perfect chance to pull out all the stops and play the FUNNIEST prank ever! hah!

... oh. looks like things've gotten a little out of hand.
