tv shows these days don’t do romantic tension as well as burn notice, psych, or white collar
where’s the yearning for each other so much that you can’t tell her how you feel so you work it into a phone conversation while making sad lovey eyes at your girl so that she knows you’re talking about her?
where’s the putting both love interests lives in danger thus making him choose so he does choose but also sends his best friend in the world world to get the other one cause there’s no one else he would trust to do it?
where’s the carrying her out of a river after she got shot because you saved her life even tho she was going to go back to Ireland and leave you?
where’s the not being able to admit how your feel for her so you give her a key to your loft and let her eat your yogurt instead?
where is it? where is it???? this is why I keep going back to those shows because they’re so good and they do it so well and oh my god just kiss each other already won’t you?????

Burn Notice OT3 ramblings
The fic I’m currently writing has really crystallised my thoughts on Michael’s relationships with Fiona and Sam. None of them are particularly new or revelatory, it’s just set them out in my mind in a definite way. What Michael needs from Fiona is unconditional love. He needs to know that someone will love him no matter what he does, that she’ll always come back to him, and there’s nothing that can make her give up on him. He needs that from her because he’s never known emotional stability. His mother loves him unconditionally (and damn, she needs to, with everything he puts her through), but it never felt that way to Michael. To Michael, it always felt like she didn’t love him enough – she didn’t love him enough to protect him from his father, to get him away from that abusive environment. So for him to feel safe in his relationship with Fiona, he needs to know that she’ll always back him and support him, and put his needs first, in a way his mother never did. What Michael needs from Sam is that same love and support, but he very much needs it NOT to be unconditional. Michael knows that he’s susceptible, that the wrong person whispering in his ear in the right way can convince him to do things he really shouldn’t do. He’s known that since Larry, but knowing it doesn’t make him immune. Michael needs Sam because Sam will back him without hesitation right up until the exact point when he doesn’t – and then he’ll stand up against him and stop him. Sam’s primary motivation is to protect Michael, and that includes protecting Michael from himself. Which is something Michael doesn’t appreciate in the moment, but later, he knows, because Michael never sees where that line is until he’s looking back on it from the wrong side. It's not entirely cut and dried between the two of them. Fiona disagrees with Michael frequently and vehemently, but when he refuses to back down, she’ll usually go along. And Sam will sometimes go along with Michael against his own better judgement, but only so far before he digs in. (And the times when Fiona and Sam band together against Michael, that’s when Michael’s really gone off the rails.) What Michael gets from Fiona is a grand, operatic love – the love that drove her to come to Miami for him, even after she found out he’d been lying to her all along, that the man she originally fell in love with was pure fiction. The love that says she’ll choose to die with him rather than live without him. What he gets from Sam is a grounded, practical love. Sam would never choose to die with Michael. He’d offer to be the one doing the dying if that was an option, but if it had to be Michael, Sam would consider dying alongside him to be a waste of Michael’s sacrifice. Sam would stay alive for Michael, and make sure he was there to help his mother through it all. That doesn’t mean he loves Michael less, he just loves differently. Michael doesn’t really work with either one of them alone. He needs both of them to keep him balanced and stop him plunging off an emotional cliff in one direction or the other, because that’s the legacy his childhood and his life have left him with. And frankly, he’s enough of a high maintenance nightmare that it’s better to have two people sharing the strain of him…

Does anyone else watch a film or tv show, look at a woman and go; you’d be a vampire slayer in another life? Or is it just me? I’m re watching Burn Notice and I’ve decided that Fiona Glenanne would’ve been a vampire slayer who liked to set traps for vampires and blow them up. Because I said so.

Michael’s friends spend the entire series trying to get him to see a life beyond his job as a spy and offering him something better than that work and over and over again he rejects it and gets sucked back in. Until in the last two episodes he’s standing there, hopelessly drowning in a mess of his own making until the two people who love him most, his mother and Fiona, come and offer their lives for his. His mother literally dies for him; Fiona offers up her life for his in her play to win him back from Sonya and James’ influence, and then figuratively dies for him in faking her death and giving up everything in Miami to run away with him. And Michael stands there feeling the weight of all his guilt for everything he’s done wrong to cause this and both of them tell him, in Fiona’s words “I didn’t do it because you deserve it”. They do it because they love him even though he doesn’t deserve it. And it’s that grace that finally frees Michael and lets him have a new and better life.
