Here's a little look I've put together while following a certain rule: all eyeshadow colors pick were random!!! It's a fun game I discovered on a Discord server and I love it.

Margaret’s Summer Product Diary

MORNING

I wake up at around 8:00 am, which, to paraphrase the president, is my personal Vietnam. I feed my plump cat, Clementine (catnip banana for scale), and then head into the bathroom, screaming at my Google Home to play my shower jams playlist. I drink a full bottle of water while waiting for the shower to get hot.

First I wash my hair with Drybar Blonde Ale Brightening Shampoo; it’s violently purple and helps neutralize the brassy tones from bleaching my naturally brown hair. I follow up with Rita Hazan Ultimate Shine Gloss in Breaking Brass. Both of these products are a bit drying, so once a week I use Rita Hazan Weekly Remedy Treatment. This two-step conditioner is the shit. My hair has never felt so soft and healthy – I was forcing coworkers to touch it all day after my first use. 

I cleanse my chest and back with the Body Shop’s Tea Tree Skin Clearing Body Wash (hooray for sweaty summer breakouts), and wash my face with Ole Henriksen Oil Control Cleanser.

When I get out of the shower I wrap my hair in an old t-shirt, because the internet told me to. I immediately apply La Neige Lip Sleeping Mask to my perpetually chapped lips.

I start my skincare with Belif Hydra Sebum Control Essence. It smells delicious, and I like patting it on, but it doesn’t really control oil that much. Then I apply a couple drops of The Ordinary’s Salicylic Acid 2% Solution all over my face.

As you can see in my picture, I have a lot of hyperpigmentation due to sun exposure when I was an idiot teenager. I’m currently on the hunt for a vitamin C serum, suggestions welcome!

The salicylic acid is topped off with a very thin layer (like, a pea-sized amount for my whole face) of Belif Aqua Bomb because it’s hot and I turn into a greasy swamp monster with anything heavier. It smells just as good as the essence.

IT ME.

Okay, skincare’s done! On to makeup. I refill my water bottle. Drinking 32 ounces of water every morning has… maybe helped my skin?

I smooth on CoverFX Mattifying Primer with Anti-Acne Treatment, which provides a great smooth base and also mattifies and provides even more salicylic acid to incinerate zits.

On my eyelids, brow bone, under-eye and cheekbone I apply CoverFX Illuminating Primer; I got it as a sample but I’m way too ~naturally dewy~ to use it all over. It provides a very subtle glow to the eye area and plays well under eyeshadow. In the summer, I use it in lieu of eye cream during the day.

I use Tarte BB Tinted Treatment Primer as foundation. I want to use this the rest of my life: it’s mattifying, pore-minimizing, covers quite well, AND has SPF. It should be called a foundation, not a primer, TBH.

Why yes, I DO use three primers. I’m a prime bitch.

A couple dark marks are still visible, so I dot on Nars Creamy Concealer in Custard (not pictured). I’ll set all that with Too Faced Peach Perfect Setting Powder, which actually smells like peaches, and tastes very nice if you get some in your mouth. I do blush and bronzer after setting powder because otherwise it makes me look washed out.

Then I apply blush (Tarte Amazonian Clay 12-Hour Blush in Paaaarty, which was the Sephora birthday gift last year, and it is Fine), and contour a bit with a matte bronzer (Benefit Hoola, also a sample). (Blend that fucking neck!!!!)

To finish off my facial canvas, I sweep Fenty Beauty Killawatt Freestyle Highlighter in Hu$tla Baby on my cheekbones and orbital area. I am now Rihanna.

This is exhausting. 

Most days I use Too Faced Sweet Peach Eyeshadow Palette; today I’ve used a pretty rose gold shade from it. I then do a small cat eye using Kat Von D’s Tattoo Liner; when I’m dead, I want tattoo liners scattered on my grave every Christmas. I follow up with Too Faced Better Than Pizza Sex Mascara, which is fine but not really worth the hype to me? Again, it was a sample. I subscribe to Sephora Play and use whatever mascara they send every couple of months.

Side note: I seem to have a lot of Too Faced in my routine, but somehow did not pay for any of it.

The last step in my makeup regimen is also my least favorite: brows. I have sparse brows that seem to grow straight down. Using an eyeliner brush & small strokes, I apply ELF Eyebrow Kit gel in Light. I try not to make my brows too dark, and follow up with Benefit’s Gimme Brow.

All this time, my hair has been air drying. I got a keratin treatment a couple months ago, but it’s starting to wear off, which means my not-so-luscious locks are starting to get puffy and frizzy again. I attempt to smooth things a bit with IGK’s Mistress Hydrating Hair Balm, and then blast my roots with the blow dryer. I end up twisting my hair into a topknot to ensure it looks really horrible later.

Finally, I brush my teeth and dab on Nars Velvet Matte Lipstick Pencil in Cruella, a bright red that looks like a rosy lip stain if used sparingly.

FINALLYYYYYYY, at 9:00ish, I go to work. I am a sweaty swamp monster from the second I enter the subway station.

MIDDAY

Blot blot blot blot blot with those toilet seat protector things. It’s the only decent ~life hack~ I’ve seen on Buzzfeed.

Makeup is holding up well, aside from lipstick (I forgot to bring it to reapply) and hair looks less terrible than expected. I drink 3-4 bottles of water at work.

EVENING

I leave the office around 7:00 pm. During warmer months I walk about 2 miles home through Central Park. It’s the most beautiful and relaxing commute, but the downside is I arrive home with a wicked case of boob sweat.

I throw my hair into a bun and hop into the shower again to cleanse my body and soul of sweat and general NYC grossness. While I’m in there I wash my face with the same Ole Henriksen Oil Control Cleanser.

Clementine guards me whilst I bathe.

After showering, I lube my body up with Eucerin. While that soaks in, I stand naked in the middle of the apartment and get stoned.

Before bed, I remove any lingering eye makeup with a couple drops of The Ordinary’s Moroccan Argan Oil (not pictured), and use a cotton ball to apply The Ordinary’s Glycolic Acid 7% Toning Solution. This toner RULES, and is frequently sold out, because it is a HUGE bottle and only eight goddamn dollars, and a dupe for Glossier’s toner.

Continuing on The Ordinary train, I pat-pat-pat a few drops of Hyaluronic Acid 2% + B5 into my face, and follow up with The Ordinary’s Niacinamide 10% + Zinc 2% serum. Niacinamide is great for treating acne, but isn’t in a lot of products yet. It’s anti-inflammatory and this serum can be worn under makeup.

Once again I apply Belif’s Aqua Bomb and then smear on Estee Lauder’s Advanced Night Repair Eye Cream. It’s kind of greasy, but I believe eye cream is a scam and refuse to spend money on it. Samples only for this gal. I’m so fiscally responsible!

After all this is complete, I brush my teeth, braid my hair and get in bed at about 10:30. Goodnight!

You have the most beautiful smile 😍 also, I recently got highlighter but I have no idea how to apply it without looking like a cheap trick 😖 what's your secret to getting it to look so elegant?

THANK U SO MUCH AAAA 😭💖 i think the trick w highlighter is really correct placement and using the right type of brush! i can go into more detail/do a mini tutorial if needed but the basic idea is that highlighter is supposed to accentuate the high parts of your face where light would normally hit-- so cheekbones, the bridge of your nose, cupids bow, under your eyebrows, etc. some people also do above the brow bone by the forehead but for me that’s a little excessive bc i struggle a lot w oily skin and do NOT need any more shine up there. for a long time i was putting my highlighter too low on my cheeks and just moving it up a bit made a world of difference, as weird as that sounds. know the structure of your face, know what you want to emphasize, etc. 

additionally, most people use a fan brush like this for highlighter, but i wasn’t a fan (ha ha) of it bc i felt it didn’t give me enough control over how my highlight was being placed. instead, i actually use a setting brush (this one!). you can see the bristles are more tightly packed together which means the product will be more concentrated, and it’s easier for you to decide Where Exactly You Want That Highlight. so either would work, but the setting brush is my preference. i also always blend out my highlight w a regular face brush at the end so that it’s not too harsh-looking. you want it to stand out, but it should also blend into the skin pretty seamlessly or else it just looks out of place.

some people have different preferences for highlighter based on their skin-- i prefer powders, but cream highlighters can work just as well for different people. additionally, some people prefer shimmery highlighters over more natural looking ones. as a gentle ‘intro’ to highlighters, you can try using this mini becca highlighter set ($20) to see whether you like cream or powder better, or the fenty beauty killawatt freestyle highlighter ($34) to see whether you like shimmer or sheen better (i have the mean money/hu$tla baby one!).

not that anyone really cares but I'm so happy right now I could die.

work was weirdly slow for a Friday (it's been weirdly slow all week) but that was fine by me. I went to the mall after I got off and headed straight to Sephora and my heart was literally racing cuz I was so excited to see the fenty beauty line in person. I purchased the pro filt'r foundation in shade 210, the makeup sponge, and the killawatt freestyle highlighter in mean money/hu$tla baby (I'm going to use it as an eyeshadow which I've never done before.) I also bought two shirts from pacsun and two jelly face masks from lush (just to clairfy and fomo.) I also bought some sour candy strings and alcohol infused chocolate.

Here’s How to Recreate Rihanna’s Makeup Look at the Ocean’s 8 Premiere

We’ve been thoroughly, deeply, whole-heartedly invested in Rihanna’s red carpet makeup for years, but our obsession has reached an all-time high, thanks to the Ocean’s 8 press tour that’s currently happening. We’re especially excited for two reasons. Firstly, because, duh, Rihanna’s in the movie. Secondly, this is Rihanna’s first huge international press tour since launching Fenty Beauty last year. So, needless to say, we’re following her red carpet looks very closely.

At last night’s London premiere of the film, Rihanna appeared in a slicked back topknot and a summery red lip and soft gold smokey eye (to match her earrings and her dress). Her makeup was done by Priscilla Ono, Fenty Beauty Global Makeup Artist, who shared every single product she used.

In other words, here’s exactly to recreate Rihanna’s look yourself!

Step 1: Pro Filt’r Instant Retouch Primer to prevent shine and pave the way for smooth makeup application. Step 2: Ono applied Pro Filt’r Soft Matte Longwear Foundation in 340 for a soft matte finish. Step 3: Match Stix Matte Skinstick in Peach to conceal, for the ultimate flawless complexion. Step 4: Ono used Match Stix Matte Skinstick in Mocha, a few shades deeper than Rihanna’s base, to contour and define her face. Step 5: One used the Killawatt Freestyle Highlighter in Moscow Mule/Ginger Binge as blush on Rihanna’s cheeks and Hu$tla Baby from the Killawatt Freestyle Highlighter in Mean Money/Hu$tla Baby as a highlight, up through the temples. Step 6: To set the look, One applied Invisimatte Blotting Powder on the t-zone to absorb excess shine and diffuse pores for an instantly filtered appearance. Step 7: For the lip, Priscilla applied the Mattemoiselle Plush Matte Lipstick in Ma’Damn, a royal red.

A beauty from Barbados, Rihanna has taken the world by storm with the release of her cosmetics line, Fenty Beauty. I was really excited to visit Harvey Nichols in Knightsbridge to browse the line, and hopefully go home with some goodies.

I arrived at Harvey Nichols just before opening time and waited in the queue for an hour before I could explore the Fenty Beauty counter - definitely wasn’t expecting that as it was long after the initial release. However, It was overall a very pleasant experience - I was with my mother and sister, and we were provided with a personalised service; I’m not sure if it’s always like this, but I thoroughly enjoyed it despite usually preferring to be left to explore by myself. The girls were so much fun, very patient, and clearly knew their stuff! It was definitely different from the service I received from some other high-end brands, so this was refreshing to see and left me with a positive lasting impression.

Now, the products. The packaging is sleek, minimal and stylish, with a luxurious weight to it and I think that everything is fairly priced given the quality. 

Pro Filt’r Soft Matte Longwear Foundation (£26) With an initial release of 40 foundation shades, many people including myself were confident that they may finally find their perfect match, especially as Rihanna paid close attention to the issue of undertones. Of course, some other brands offer a vast range of foundation shades, however in my personal experience, many have left me with an ashy or even orange finish. I was also thrilled to see that people with richer and darker complexions had more colour choices, because let’s be honest, two or three ‘dark’ colours is just not diverse enough (can I also emphasise initial release!). I watched many YouTubers warning that the foundation may oxidise, and the lovely ladies at Fenty Beauty were also aware of this so we tried out some shades and waited for them to set and see what they looked like in natural lighting. I opted for 290 and it’s safe to say that it is a perfect match. As someone with dry and sensitive skin, I usually favour more dewy foundations however I was pleasantly surprised with the way this foundation sits on my skin. It is definitely a matte finish, though I would describe it as a natural matte as opposed to a completely one-dimensional cakey type of matte. This foundation looks phenomenal whether I apply it with a makeup brush or damp beauty blender, and it is the kind of foundation that sets itself so I can skip using powder. It lasts absolutely all day - I’m talking 13 hours of coverage, with limited shine and no lines/caking/gathering. On some days, the foundation can be a little drying, especially with my skin type during the winter months, so I like to mix it with more hydrating foundations. 

Overall, I’m very happy with the Pro Filt’r Soft Matte Longwear foundation, and can definitely see myself repurchasing this as soon as I’m all out. 

Killawatt Freestyle Highlighter: Trophy Wife (£26)

This was a last-minute purchase - literally, I asked the lovely lady serving me to throw that in the bag just before she took payment. Now, when I saw this online, I wasn’t too keen on it and I thought “I would never wear this”. It was too yellow-gold, glittery, pigmented. Everyone working at Fenty Beauty, of all different skin tones, flaunted Trophy Wife in some way...as an eyeshadow, inner corner/browbone highlight, dusted on their lips, or popped on their cheekbones and it looked gorgeous, quickly changing my mind to “I can make this work!”. I think the trick for me with this is a little goes a long way and this has now easily become one of my favourite things because it is more versatile and wearable than I assumed. I honestly cannot wait for Summer to just douse myself in this.  

Killawatt Freestyle Highlighter: Mean Money Hu$tla Baby (£26) A more subtle yet equally beautiful highlighter, this duo was too beautiful not to take home - I mean, look at it! I think it’s a must-have for someone who is looking to treat themselves to a more high-end highlighter, especially if they currently do not have many options in their collection. 

Pictures don’t do these justice - I mean the way they catch the light is just beautiful! Overall, I was very impressed with the makeup range from Fenty Beauty, and I’m now eyeing the new Mattemoiselle Plush Matte Lipsticks and Stunna Lip Paint!
