We don’t need animals getting in our way. But humans are not the only animals that create paths to facilitate their travels. In fact, many animals do. Bison frequently travel along the same trampled paths in snow. Deer create footpaths through brambles. More noteworthy is the fact that many animals appreciate our roads for exactly what they are… paths that facilitate their travels, and so they use them. This coyote practically flies down this open, plowed road rather than sinking chest deep and expending unnecessary energy trudging through the snow. You may complain, but like the coyote in this photo, you haven’t got a leg to stand on!

She barely had to move to grab a new slice, which she did now, strings of mozzarella stretching enticingly. “No, see, I’d have to be something disgusting, like tuna fish,” she said, shuddering. She really hated tuna. “I couldn’t turn into something nice, like—” pausing, she gestured at the pizza, “a pizza. Or a doughnut!” It was safe to assume she’d thought about this before.

1. Who Knew I Needed You by Haelstrom [E, 10K]

Sasuke wakes up in the hospital beside Naruto and starts his rocky journey to recovery after losing his arm. He considers himself lucky to always have Naruto by his side, who always says that's what best friends are for, but is that all they are?

"No one was coming. The kids and their parents were home, the grown-ups were probably in restaurants and the trail by the river was empty. It was just Naruto and Sasuke. The little blond lifted his foot to walk away, but as soon as he did, he noticed the surface of the river wrinkling. Naruto stopped for a moment, his breath stuck in his throat and he pressed his lips together as guilt and sadness was spreading into his guts. The young Uchiha was crying."

A short story about how Naruto and Sasuke had been there for each other, even as kids.

3. Love is Just Another Word for Understanding by themidnightguardian [T, 3K]

Maybe it’s because Naruto doesn’t know when to quit, because he’s always there in the periphery, because he’s loud and obnoxious and pushy. Naruto continued forward until he felt his knees give out. He stumbled to the ground and tried to keep himself upright but it was no use. Footsteps rushed toward him and he rolled over to see Hidan approaching.

His furious expression promised nothing short of murder. He looked like he’d walked straight out of a nightmare. Naruto scooted back pathetically but froze instantly when Hidan pointed the silver revolver at him.

This was it. It was finally over.

“I’ll make it quick,” Hidan said gently as he panted above him. “And I’ll be right behind you.”

Naruto gazed up at the slate blue early morning sky. Everything was silent. His eyes slipped closed and when Hidan cocked the hammer back and the sharp metal clink reached Naruto’s ears, he didn’t even flinch.

Or…

Naruto struggles to break free of his his toxic, abusive relationship and tries his hardest to put his life back together. He meets a tall, handsome, dark-haired stranger and as he slowly tries to move on from his past, Naruto’s demons reappear with a deadly vengeance.

“Do you know how many requests I get for you Sasuke? How much these men would pay to have you? They want to destroy you,” Orochimaru explained in quiet amazement.

His eyes continued to search Sasuke’s face as his free hand came up to cup the side of his cheek. A fond look came over him as he continued reverently.

“But you never even let them touch you, do you… No. Not even one. And we both know why that is.”

Sasuke just stared up at the smiling man as he tried to control his breathing. He tensed immediately as Orochimaru leaned his face towards his.

“You belong to me Sasuke.”

Or…

Sasuke’s life is turned upside down after a terrible series of events. Things steadily go from bad to worse and it seems as though he’ll never catch a break. That is, until a tall, sunny blonde comes into his life.

3. remaking first impressions by mnee [E, 13K, 2ch]

Thanks to a ticketing mishap, Naruto and Sasuke wind up with the same seat to their favorite musical.

It does not go well.

Or; In a artsy beach town off the coast of fire country, Sasuke fell in love with a boy and made the mistake of leaving him behind. Seventeen years later, he's back and hoping to find what he left behind.

Priscilla wasn’t there, thankfully. Things had been fraught enough with Fenrik when Hilda had shared her news that she wanted to share it without Priscilla being there. If she shared it. Nerves gnawed at her. Rationally she knew Yseult wouldn’t react the same, but still the fear remained. What if, what if, what if. What if she lost what she had left to call family, one after the after? Fenrik first, then Yseult, then Elba, the space around her growing emptier and emptier until all she had left was herself and a woman who was only marrying her for the protection it afforded her. Wouldn’t that be ironic, she thought with a wry twist of her lips as she poured drinks: if she lost everything she cared about in this life in an attempt to make a better one for herself. It would be just her luck.

Hilda handed Yseult her drink before settling down next to her. It had been a long time since they’d sat side by side in this cabin. It felt nice, despite her anxieties. “That’s a Hilda special,” she warned. That meant it was strong. “Don’t down it all in one go, or I’ll have to carry you home.” There wasn’t room for three of them in this cabin, and Priscilla would be back eventually.

The constant crashing and banging and sawing coming out of the newly occupied flat opposite her would have been infuriating enough, let alone when Orlaith worked nights so often and relied on being able to sleep in the day. But she was a reasonable person, and realised she could not expect everyone else around her to live in silence during the day. She really took great issue with the whole thing when the noises started inching further and further into the evening and then into the early hours. If she couldn’t at least catch up on her sleep in the day, the least she could expect was be able to on the fortunate nights she wasn’t working.

It was difficult to describe it as anything other than a march when Orlaith finally pushed the covers off herself, slid her feet into a pair of slippers, and went across the hall. Her hand pounded on the door, harder than she would have usually, but she did need to be heard over all the racket, didn’t she? “HELLO?” she called through the door. “Did you know it’s after midnight?”
