Rebels Rewatch: “Rise of the Old Masters“

Happy Father’s Day! Rather appropriately we are talking about a keystone Kanan-Ezra episode today. I swear I didn’t plan that, just how the timing worked out, lol.

Anyway...

I briefly mentioned this in my coverage of “Spark of Rebellion” but one of the reoccurring elements that tend to crop up in all my favorite characters (because I’m horribly predictable and have a Type) is:

“Has complicated yet ultimately heartwarming storgeic relationship with (surrogate) father figure.”

Soooooooo yeah, Kanan and Ezra pretty much hit me right in that particular button.

Poor Kanan fumbling with the lessons that came so instinctively to him. XD

“Actually that one always confused me too.” Love that Kanan can admit it.

Kanan’s approach is almost adorable in how inept it is, he’s just kind of throwing things against the wall hoping something will stick. In perhaps the worst environment to do any of this.

(Seriously Kanan, on top of the Ghost, while it’s in midair?! Disaster was inevitable.)

Hhhngl, look how Ezra’s eyes light up when Kanan offers him the lightsaber, he’s so eager for this.

Another quick instance of Ezra flinching as if anticipating being hit, watch close and you can see he ducks his head as well as squeezes his eyes closed briefly.

Kanan forgot to teach good weapons safety lol.

Ezra actually gets a few cartons when he peeks. :)

Aaaaaand down he goes, certain unmentioned uncharitable portions of fandom will not let up on Kanan about this particular series of mistakes.

Is practicing on top of the Ghost irresponsible child endangerment? Yes but... that’s literally the point????? Kanan has no idea what he’s doing and makes horrible mistakes left and right????? That’s why he’s so afraid and reluctant to teach Ezra????? That’s his whole motivation for wanting to go get Luminara?????

Oh but if characters do not relate to each other absolutely perfectly without any friction or conflict or mistakes whatsoever that’s horrible and toxic.

Said at least one Maul stan without a hint of irony.

Okay, done salting, let’s enjoy this moment of Ezra trying to play it cool in front of Sabine despite being in eminent danger of falling to his death.

“What, no, this is nothing. I’m fine.” XD

Fun fact: Pretty sure a gifset of this moment was one of the first Rebels-related posts I ever saw on my dashboard.

Hera looks very concerned here, lol.

And our first glimpse of what a Loth-cat looks like. Cutest addition to the Star Wars menagerie ever.

Ezra’s theme is piping in here, fragmented and quiet.

*resists the urge to go into another ranting paragraph about how uncharitable parties in fandom use this scene to argue that the Ghost crew are actually terrible towards Ezra and don’t care about him properly*

Once again, everything in the eyes. So much is unspoken but conveyed with just a look.

Friiiiiiick his expression here breaks my heart.

Casually referencing the events of last episode which should have been fandom’s first clue that it was more narratively tied into things than they thought and also introducing a new story element that plays out later. I don’t remember what I thought about Gall Trayvis the first time around, I’m pretty sure I found it weird and fishy though.

Ha ha ha the casual Fridge Horror of the Imperial broadcaster talking about a “planetary liberation” via Base Delta Zero protocol.

FOR THOSE OF YOU WHO MIGHT NOT KNOW: Base Delta Zero is basically code for “Have a bunch of Star Destroyers systematically incinerate everything on a planet’s surface from orbit.”

Soooooo yeah, there’s probably not much left of that particular “liberated” world.

Kind of interesting that Ezra chooses to confide in Chopper about his fears here.

I do like the nice cloud effects.

Kanan is in a very serious mood here, one we haven’t seen from him yet. Speaks to the depths of how badly he wants this to succeed.

Aaaaaand yet another instance of Ezra flinching like he expects Kanan to hit him. Just what exactly caused such a pronounced startle effect, exactly?

Ezra looks so crestfallen here ow ow ow ow. :(

Hera shivers as if it’s cold, which could be taken straightforwardly but also I like to think she senses the bad vibes about the place.

Oh hey, now’s a good time to remind people of the horrible headcanon theory someone sent me about why Kanan can still sense Luminara even though she’s dead.

You’re welcome.

LOOK AT THIS TIRED FATHER AND HIS THREE HORRIBLE CHILDREN. Love how Zeb and Sabine openly roast him while he’s right there, terrible influences on Ezra the both of you. XD

Snrk, the one Stormtrooper getting his helmet caught in the lift doors lololol.

The music has been periodically sparse throughout this episode, the quiet parts giving all focus to dialogue, but it’s picked up quite a bit here.

I hear the Force Theme strings prelude of course.

It is physically painful how much Ezra already hero-worships Kanan and looks up to him. He didn’t want to learn how to be a Jedi from just anyone, he wanted to learn from Kanan specifically because thinks Kanan is so cool and amazing. Ezra is constantly in awe of him this episode.

But, I mean, is it any wonder that an emotionally vulnerable teenage boy with deeply-seated abandonment issues would latch onto the first available and positive adult male influence in his life?

The Force theme coming in more fully here to trick us right before the horrible reveal, though the way it sours on the end note is a little five-second musical foreshadowing.

Hi Grand, bringing the Imperial March with you I see.

And then his theme breaks in after the commercial break cut and lemme just appreciate it again, it’s so nicely dark and foreboding. That tiny little snatch of Force Theme on the trumpet can barely be heard through it, it’s too overpowering.

Grand refrains from going for an easy kill several times this fight. He likes to play with his food, apparently. Even toying with Kanan he’s waaaaaay outclassing him, very neat and precise fencing strokes here.

Kanan’s heavy flailing is actually very at odds with his supposed preferred form, Soresu, Form 3, a primarily reflective and defensive form, which makes Grand’s comment about him being a poor student sting a bit more.

Lololol my man doesn’t even flinch at Ezra’s slingshot bolts.

Hngl the smoke element is fantastic here. Watch it waft around Kanan and Ezra as they run through it. This is not the kind of effect work you usually get on CGI kids cartoon shows.

Kanan’s form actually improves a bit after the cutaway, his footing is more solid and he’s expending less effort, making his blocking stances more effective at turning back Grand’s blade. So that jibe from Grand apparently kicked Kanan’s brain into focus.

Oh yep, all those troopers are dead, that is not a survivable explosion.

Kanan’s managing the spinny Jedi flips now; he’s untensing and likely falling back into muscle memory and connection to the Force. I love how Star Wars tends to depict Jedi survivors getting back into practice after they haven’t picked up their sabers or connected to the Force in a long while, awkward at first but slowly getting the hang of it again, remembering their training, moving through basics into more complex moves until they’re comfortable again. I know A New Dawn also depicts Kanan tapping into the Force as straining a muscle that hasn’t been used in a while, nice consistency across the board there.

“He is unfocused and undisciplined.” “Well then we’re perfect for each other!”

And one of my favorite Papa Wolf Kanan moments right here when Kanan slams Grand up against the ceiling. :)

The Force Theme is finally louder and more confident here and Grand’s has taken a pause.

Buuuuuuut it’s soon back in force lol.

I dunno what it is but I really love the animation in Grand’s unflinching run through the closing doors here, even when he has to leap over them he doesn’t even break stride.

Ezra’s slicing and lockpicking skills kind of fall by the wayside as he focuses more on Jedi training, which is kind of a shame, I liked that he was a bit tech-savvy in ways Sabine wasn’t.

Why I like to include little moments here and there in my fics where he still gets to use his talents.

Can I appreciate this little moment of Sabine reaching for him in concern?

Of course I can, who’s going to stop me?

And one of my favorite master-padawan moments right here, Kanan finally giving some solid instruction (”Picture the locking mechanism in your mind.”), doing it with him, and it’s something easy that Ezra can already do albeit on a bigger scale.

A very victorious Force Theme to mark the occasion. :)

Something Rebels does when it needs to emphasize Kanan and Ezra’s connection is basically have them mirror each other’s pose, this is one of the first examples. Ezra’s straining a little bit more in his expression but they’re perfectly in sync and mirror-matched limb for limb.

WHICH DOESN’T NECESSARILY MAKE THE PARALLELED IMAGERY IN THE FINALE HURT MORE BUT IT ADDS A LAYER.

Ohhhhhhh hang on, does anyone wonder if Hera leading the tibedees here was inspiration for the eventual purrgil surprise?

It’s on theme at least, lol.

I hear the “Rebels Shenanigans” leitmotif here, bit more dramatic than normal, lovely.

Ezra’s theme coming in as we return to Lothal and man, there’s really nothing I could say about this scene that hasn’t already been said, this is one of fandom’s favorites, we can all spill ink about Ezra’s fear of abandonment and Kanan’s sense of inadequacy and how the Force tends to bring together pairs that teach and grow each other.

How Kanan finally figures out and understands what Yoda’s “Do or do not” line means, how it’s all about your mental state, you can’t give up before you’ve started, you have to be all in and fully committed.

How he’s realizing he has to commit to this and not half-ass it and that leads him to adjust his strategy and go much slower and more meticulously in this lovely little last scene which has the distinct look and feel of a father and son playing catch in the yard. ^_^

Our first real “plot-heavy“ episode of the series, heavy on the drama and interpersonal character conflict. Can see why it’s the episode that convinced a lot of people to stay on board. It delves much more deeply into Kanan and Ezra’s master-padawan connection, the Found Family aspects of which are, of course, widely loved. Their relationship was always one of the show’s strengths. Like Ezra and Zeb’s friendship it starts off rocky but there’s an extra emotional and personal element in that Kanan is the teacher, the “parent”, and they’re both connected to the Force, something no one else can teach Ezra about. Kanan has to be the one to guide Ezra through that learning process because he’s the only one who understands it, who can bring that aspect out of Ezra and make him truly who he is.

Kanan really starts to step up after this. He’s still got a LOT of fears and worries and insecurities, as he’ll tell Yoda later, but he’s over his initial mental block now. All the better for Ezra, for helping him feel wanted and safe. :)

Ahhhh I love this episode, the character growth from this point to the end is just *chef kiss*. More worried spacedad Kanan up next week, hopefully I’ll have that post up quicker than this one.

don't know if i've talked recently about why I wrote YRMR (past tense since it's sitting at 98% done in the gdoc file).

not to be navel gazey, but it's cool to look back in hindsight and see what "worked" in terms of endurance fuel for such a massive project, and to see what worked as consistent motivators (maybe motivators to take for future projects?)

there's a few reasons, the big clusters being:

* i actually like revelation's plot a lot. i don't think it's cobbled together at all. but i was missing that specific fictious merged version of 'what if revelation + while corrin romanced gunter (a la conquest)' especially since it (would) make a lot of implied characterization explicit.

talked with one of you recently how FE games do really good at leaving the player a lot of high quality ingredients (such as characters), but oftentimes FE stumbles on mixing the ingredients together to make a killer packaged soup of a plot. so it's weirdly the perfect kind of series to spring off with fanworks to fill that gap.

* the bark bark horny. i uhhh. yeah. would be remiss in leaving this out. :P honestly while there's a lot of stories that gets close to my specific itches/cluster of tropes i like, i feel like stories often pull the punches with,,, how do I say this, "ugly" erotics? how do you make stroke recovery sex smoking hot. i'm going be blunt here, how do you write post-trauma sex with dignity and then also write a rape fantasy from the perpetrator's point of view in the same turn with nuance and have both be hot as fuck? how do you write intimacy between a frankly obscenely large age gap while being explicit about the way bodies fall apart in the end, and yes, it too being hot?

messy fucking stuff. you know, literally.

in a weird way, it's that 'ugly erotics' that strongly feels the most human to me. it's the only kind of erotics i really see myself in, those knife-edged places where erotics intersect with the jagged edge of unpleasantness and sometimes end up creating something all the more tender for it.

* there is a very specific 'chewing my arm off out of a sheer need to selfishly see more fanwork of a specific character' focus that i've only gotten with zihark in the past (got me to start drawing to begin with) that is the same for gunter. it's actually really fun to feel that nameless drive again. there's a real clarity to it that i missed.

* this last reason goes into a little woo-woo territory of how i see some characters, and it genuinely galls me to say this with a straight face, i am not.... a woo-woo person by and large lmao. anyway. i genuinely felt called to make this specific redemption story. dunno how to say it any other way. i remember sitting there halfway through the first revelation playthrough feeling so. fucking pained for the character and what a raw deal he got. like ok yeah, fictional character, I get that part. but then there's quotes like this that do a far better job of capturing that... calling.

i am genuinely fond of this old man and i think he deserved a hell of a lot better. was willing to swear on my Muse about it and i think it says a lot that i'm a stones throw from finishing it, too.

It's super fucking funny to watch when FE fans (especially the dudebro ones) get all worked up about stuff like female versions of avatars tending to get better unit reps in FEH. Or FEH having the sheer gall to regularly pepper their original characters into storylines outside of the main plot. Or how some of the more popular FE games tend to get favored over the ones most people have never played and barely heard of. Their pathetic outrage just warms the heart.

Hello how are you? Still accepting feh artist opinion? Not sure if this has been asked, but how about Hagiya Kaoru? I've known this artist because of the mobage I played long time ago (Chain Chronicle). He was like Rika Suzuki who only drew fe cipher before joining feh with resplendent Ike or Galle as his first one I think.

I think my fav part of his art is the face. Especially the eyes and the shading near eyes. Whenever I see the art, I can tell pretty much that must be Hagiya Kaoru works. Though I'm not fan off his normal portait L.Byleth face. Maybe it's because hair color which is more soft tone if you compare to female one. Oh and his Yen'fay is top notch👌good unit as well and really worth it to +10

I want you to know I wasn't ignoring this ask, I was just at work and I've been itchin' to answer this one all day ;w;

I LOVE Hagiya Kaoru's artwork. Their lineart is really well defined and gives the pieces a really crisp feel. I think "crisp" is how I'd describe their artwork when I look at it, because it's just sharp and angular and I love that about the art. Although to be honest I actually like L!M!Byleth's hair more than L!F!Byleth's hair more simply because it's easier on the eyes whereas F!Byleth's hair is like... a lime, lol. But that's just my opinion! I totally understand where you're coming from though, because it IS supposed to be more drastic and the lime green is a good color.

But getting back to Kaoru's artwork, their color palette choices are great, their anatomy is accurate, and they've got some great posework!

Though I will say that Yen'Fay's pose, while absolutely true to character, feels a little... too rooted:

Which again, it's not a bad stance and it's absolutely in-character, but for an attack pose you need a forward dynamic when the pictures are panning in from the left or right side of the screen.

And I almost forgot to mention it, but as you guys saw from my post this morning, it was just revealed that they did Lon'qu:

Awh MAN look at that pose! And that special effect! And they even made it reflect in the lighting! They were honestly the best pick for Lon'qu.

Now I think the only true criticism I can think of for Kaoru's artwork is that we haven't really seen them draw a huge variety of characters, only men. But according to their Twitter (which I clicked today out of curiousity) they DO draw women as well.

All in all, Hagiya Kaoru's a 9.9999999/10. I just wanna see them draw a wider variety of characters but everything about their artwork is practically perfect; they've pretty much got a grasp on all the important stuff for FEH art.

Now, back to your statements :

Fighting against Rhea fits in quite nicely with FE running theme of humanity choosing its own fate rather than being playthings for dragons

Fire Emblem has never been a series of “choosing” fate rather than being “playthings” to lizards.

FE series is all about a blue haired protagonist coming to terms with their duties and expectations, and doing the “right thing” when it is needed/asked.

Also, daily reminder that FE8′s dragons do not expect anything from humanity :)

While the Elibe dragons just wanted to live in peace, but some people didn’t want that :)

Unless you’re talking about some weird kink Nergal (and Eliwood?) was into with his dragon wife, but I am not into that.

I sure hope it’s not the case, else, following this maxim, Seliph is also someone who forcefully seduces ladies since Bramsel did it first, because they are both humans.

Elibe dragons were attacked by humans, so unless breathing counts as “starting a problem” I don’t know what was expected of them. Archanea dragons, since you seem to like this verse enough to talk about it - but not enough to read about it - degenerated naturally, yes, but the enemity Medeus had towards them is not because humans have round ears, nope, but because humans enslaved “disminished” dragons who became manaketes.

You could even make a point that humans always start to mess with dragons and it bites them in the rear, this is what happens in FE Archanea, FE Elibe, FE Ylisse (since Grima is an artificial, human made construct) and, arguably, in FE Fodlan with all this nonsense about Crests and whatnot.

Hm.

This makes me think of this (translated) line in FE4, between Loptyr who possesses Julius and Seliph :

Yurius (defeated by Celice): “Urrgghhhh… Take note, Celice…! While greed exists in men’s hearts… …I will return…! …You’ve been warned! Gaaahhh…”

FE15′s ending narration :

Only one truth is clear: War will come again, when man grows proud and slothful once more, and its flames will devour one and all, raging until the very earth itself lies scorched and bare of life. For whatever madness lay in the hearts of gods… a darkness deeper still beats wild in the hearts of man…

Medeus from FE12 :

Medeus from FE11 :

So what can take from the Archanea saga - which created and cemented the themes that inspired all future FEs?

Some dragons are big and scary and powerful, as long as Men have evil/greed/darkness/madness in their hearts, they will continue to exist ; almost as if those bad dragons are the symptoms of an illness caused by Humanity’s folly, or just, humans being humans and asses.

Loptry did not corrupt the first Galle - Jugdral is very clear about how Dragons give magic blood to humans, it is a pact. Galle I wanted power, and he received power. Through the course of the Jugdral games (I recommend playing them, watching a LP or just reading their script on SF, trust me, your posts will finally have some substance!) the player will realise that Julius is the only “corrupted” human by the power of Loptyr, but Manfroy, Bramsel, Chagall, Di Maggio, and even Arvis himself?

Are not corrupted at all by a dragon, they made their own choices and while I know some people really like the concept of agency being removed to justify a fave still being a fave, even if she ends up mindbroken in a certain game, all those Jugdral people? They do what they want, and not what a lizard locked in a book wants.

rhea reminds me of mila and dumas They all actively interfere with and try to shape humanity to fit their ideals but ultimately are detrimental to the humans they seek to protect

In my copy, and the one some person at SF received and transcripted on the site for everyone to access, and the ones all those people on Youtube who made LPs received -

Mila’s biggest “sin” is to have grown lazy and complacent and not have taken enough action regarding the humans of Zofia, allowing Lima to seduce ladies and Desaix to burn a bunch of babies.

Rhea’s interference is so active that

Hubert complains that she didn’t do enough to shape the world as she saw fit,

Nopes!Leicester dgaf about her and don’t even know who she is,

a branch of her organisation tries to kill her for sheltering foreigners.

I suppose she is as active as Leopold’s braincells when he stares at a map.

rhea was scared of humans and claimed without her fodlan was doomed which isnt true

A: Loputousu, Narga and Holsety held different positions compared to the other dragons. Loputousu’s plan was obvious – “to use Bishop Galle to wreak vengeance on the humans”, which is why he formed a blood pact with Galle. The holy dark tome Loputousu contained Loputousu’s overpowering hatred and resentment towards humans, and was able to control the human who broke its seal (namely Bishop Galle’s descendants, those who inherited large amounts of the original pact-former’s blood). So it was, a human who possessed Loputousu’s strength and will was born.

Loptyr was an ass, and wanted to piss on humans by using Galle’s descendants as meatsuits (note how this only says the humans who were controlled were Galle’s descendants, not the man himself!).

As for Galle 1, Kaga says this about him :

In Genealogy of the Holy War, the ambitious Bishop Galle believed the legend that “drinking the blood of the ancient dragons grants one tremendous power and eternal life” and traveled around the world, finally arriving at the continent of Akaneia. And don’t worry about Duma and Mila being wrong, my personalised copy of FE15 had them acknowledge the errors of their ways, and entrust the fate of Valentia to Alm’n’Celica, but my copy also had a character named Desaix who burnt babies to become King without any draconic interference.

Fates is, I reckon, not my area of expertise. You would have more chance talking to Fates fans. But from what I remember, Anankos degenerated, he gave his dragon stone to Azura’s ancestor hoping he could sing for him but after some time it didn’t work, and that’s it ?

I don’t think how this evens it out - unless you’re talking about how, in Fates, everything “bad” happens because of Anankos, without any human hand, but it has the very unfortunate implication of saying a race of people is bad because this person who has a mental illness did bad things, and I really do not support this train of thought.

As for Rhea :

It goes without saying, however the reason for Seiros tampering with history was not so she could rule over humanity—it was to minimize war and preserve peace across the land.

The devs don’t agree with you, and despite what the personalised copy you got said, or what NoA advertised, Rhea, and the Church of Seiros, never controlled nor ruled over Fodlan.

Whatever issues Rhea’s secrets and “guidance” cause, the main problems arising in FE16 (and in Nopes) are caused by Agarthans - humans. Not lizards.
