#12: Sister Friede and Father Ariandel (Dark Souls 3)

“When the ashes are two, a flame alighteth.”

Time for soup! This dynamic duo nails several key elements of a good gank boss (big melee dude with slow but high damaging attacks and long range support dude keeping you on your toes) and deserves plenty of praise for that skill. But for my money, the fight is at its best during your two 1v1s with Sister F herself. The first encounter is an eerily quiet duel where you face off with her graceful yet quietly powerful movements that are occasionally broken up by an (admittedly pretty easy) game of hide and seek reminiscent of Priscilla, but when the gloves come off in phase 3…oh baby. Blackframe Friede is the closest Dark Souls gets to Lady Maria, and it kicks ass. Her ranged attacks from phase 2 combine with her melee focus from phase 1 for a maddeningly difficult but intensely rewarding experience. That said, the fight sometimes feels a bit too close to Lady Maria, and not just because it reuses some of her animations. A few of Friede's attack combos go up to SIX hits in a row in a way that sometimes feels ill-suited to the more methodical combat of the Souls trilogy. That isn't to say that she's too hard or anything, only that it can feel a bit off-rhythm. But that's a pretty minor complaint about an otherwise incredible fight. And let's be real, it's the only redeemable part of that entire DLC. RIP.
