Elizabeth Hawes: Along Her Own Lines Until March 26, 2023

This show at the FIT Museum in NYC only runs a month which hardly seems long enough in light of its subject.

Elizabeth Hawes (1903-1971) was both a designer, who made couture clothing and then tried to work for a ready-to-wear garment company, and a writer. She found she could not make money with custom-made clothing because her own perfectionism made it too costly, and that garment manufacturers expected a frenetic creativity that was impossible to achieve. She wrote best-selling books about the fashion industry and about garment design, and then began to advocate for the rights of workers and improvements in their conditions.

This show look at all these different aspects of her life and works, and shows some of the garments she designed like this purple wool coat from 1950 with a contrasting lining.

Meseros Robots

¿Ya vieron los nuevos meseros?

En el Costanera Center y Parque Arauco asistieron unos días un par de robots meseros llamados KettyBot y BellaBot, entregando pedido y brindando ayuda.

Estos robots son exportaciones de China diseñadas para facilitar la entrega de platos de la cocina a los meseros. Y claro, también son excelentes anfitriones por su atractivo y la capacidad de programarlos para la interacción con clientes. 

Además de trasladar platos desde la cocina a las mesas, los robots son capaces contar chistes o cantar un "cumpleaños felíz". Lo que resulta un excelente forma para atraer clientes.

Why you should join the BSU at FIT

The BSU which stands for “The Black Student Union” is a student ran club at the Fashion Institute of Technology. I have had the pleasure of being a member of the club for the past three years I spent at FIT. I worked my way up from being a regular member to the director of media for the club. I also also one of the two executive producers for “The Black Print” fashion show this past April 2022. Below are three reasons why you, a BIPOC student, should join and actively participate in the club: 

1. Networking opportunities: 

You never know what kind of opportunities will present itself when you meet new people and find out what their interest are/ what they do. 

- Joining BSU is a great way to network and meet new people.

-  Keeping in contact through social media is a great way to keep that connection going (share your Instagram and LinkedIn) 

2. Sense of belonging: 

Going to a PWI can often be intimidating for those such as myself who came from predominantly black institutes where it was easier to get out of your shell and feel some sense of belonging. That is not to generalize PWI’s, because everyone’s academic journey is different. 

- Joining a club with like minded individuals can take the pressure off being a small fish in a big pond. 

- Helps boost your confidence and self-esteem 

- Develop new friendships that can last a lifetime 

3. Opportunities for growth 

College is a great time to learn about yourself, what your likes and dislikes are, hobbies etc. What better way to explore your interest than to get involved in a club?

- BSU is a great way to tap into your creativity and see your visions come to life with those around you. 

- For example, “The Black Print” fashion show started out as an idea and blossomed into a full blown production in just eight months. 

- The entire show was student ran with the help of the Student Activity Board, and we all used our talents and ideas to make our vision come true. 

- Build your resume with skills you gained from BSU 

- Leadership roles in the club will look great on your resume 

That is all! Those are my three key reasons as to why you should join BSU. With the semester now coming to an end, there is still a chance for those who aren’t graduating yet to join next semester, Fall 2022!

With a campus full of driven, unconventional creatives, it’s inevitable that FIT students' ingenuity would foster within their clothing and aesthetic. Chic, expressive, and original, FIT’s everyday style on campus ranges from casual to niche personal styles. The community influences and encourages taking risks with clothing, or not. The beauty of style at the Fashion Institute of Technology is that of every individual because there is a school-wide appreciation for clothing and other styles, regardless of one’s closet. As for Fall 2023, FIT style trends would include: comfortability, expressiveness, individuality, and well rounded outfits. Anything that fits these elements is free rein to be worn, ripped, sewed, and repurposed. Color palettes can range from dark to earthy tones, from hyper-feminine pink to neon colors. Overall, fashion at FIT can be described as ‘creatively individual.’
