Midnight Series Masterpost
Even though everything is in the Series Page, figured I’d write a quick Masterpost for y’all <3 I’ll update it as I post new parts, including any Tumblr exclusives I might write.
The Midnight Series
Rating: Scales between PG13 to Mature. Everything Mature+ will be tagged as such.
Fantasy Mumscarian AU
This takes place in a world that mashes up Real Life, Fantasy RPG and Minecraft. There’s no game mechanics- no inventory, no respawn, no hunger bars, etc- but there are mobs, redstone, magic and enchanting, and the setting is an undetermined medieval-esque world with mixed technology bordering between middle ages and modernity. Oh... and gods are real.
Grian is trying to flee from something he can’t outrun and stumbles into the world of the supernatural. Mumbo has been alone for a long time and no longer knows how to open up. Scar is all too aware he’s living on borrowed time and acts... accordingly.

Mumbo from my dragon rider au, with his dragon familiar Safi.
Fire dragons like Safi are the only dragons too small to ride, however they are also the only dragons able to breathe fire. Safi is a particularly temperamental example.
The scarring on the left side of Mumbo’s face is from an accident involving dragon fire.

What if I just went insane for my birthday and wrote a 528 word snippet of a fantasy au. What then. Read below the cut! As a warning i did not edit it so there might be errors lmao
Grian adjusted his grip on Scar’s staff as Mumbo fixed his suspenders. The elf was still lying on the ground, though he had assured them he was fine, he just didn’t want to stand up yet. Grian panted as he caught his breath, looking at the dead bear in the middle of the road. There had been no warning for its attack, it just appeared in front of them. It didn’t come out from the forest surrounding the path, or at least Grian swore it hadn’t. He stayed close to Scar, squatting down and using his wings to balance himself with Scar’s staff acting as a third leg.
Mumbo approached the bear, cautious in case it wasn’t actually dead. Of the three, he was the worst fighter, so the bear had a free swing. Grian could see, even from the bit of distance he had, Mumbo’s mustache twitched as he crouched, looking at the bear, and then he grimaced, standing back up and dusting his hands off even though they’d touched nothing. “Sculk infection!” he called out, taking a step back from the dead bear.
Grian muttered under his breath and his poked his head up over Scar’s face. “Are you able to get up yet?” he asked.
Scar shifted and groaned softly, but he pulled himself up anyway, despite Grian’s quiet assurances that it was fine if he laid a little longer. Its not like the trio were blocking any traffic on an abandoned backroad. He passed Scar is staff and his hands hovered behind the elf as he stood in case he fell back over. The staff’s form twisted until it was a little thicker and shorter, good for Scar to use as a cane. The emerald that sat at the top when it was its full length now embedded itself into the tip of the cane. Scar’s full weight leaned on it and his eyes squinted just a bit as he focused on the bear. The elf’s long ears twitched where they were visible under his hair, and then the bear’s limp body lifted into the air. Mumbo took a few steps to get out of Scar’s way as the body floated over to a bush.
“It’s getting more common,” Mumbo said, watching foliage overgrow the area to hide the body, to keep any other passersby safe.
Grian took a deep breath and stood straight, waiting a beat before he flew up over the tops of the trees. The ruins of cities and towers revealed themselves to him before he landed again.
“Well. It’s a good sign we’re going the right way, I suppose,” he said. Mumbo had closed the gap between himself and Scar and Grian and was looking their elf over as Grian landed. Mumbo pressed a kiss to Scar’s forehead, a little worried huff coming out of him as Scar once again attempted to reassure them he was fine. Grian stared into the woods around them as Mumbo and Scar bickered too quietly for him to really be able to hear, his entire body rigid. They weren’t safe here, he knew that. They all knew that. But he didn’t need the reminder.

You say you dont want people copying your work but you dont seem to have a problem with other mumscarian aus that clearly draw heavily on songbird like rift au? Explain

on a serious note:
first of all, belle (stitchthesewords) is a very dear friend of mine, and I happen to enjoy rift au very much. SECOND of all, rift au existed before songbird did. and I'll have you know, belle helped me plan songbird's base storyline. we talk about fic ideas all the time??
I'd genuinely love to see how you think rift au, a fantasy crime story with a resistance against king ren, draws "heavily" on songbird, a fantasy murder mystery with a deeply rooted theme of humanity. these two aus HARDLY have any similarities between them. so I'd love to see what you think is heavy influence.
the only similarities is the fantasy genre, and that mumbo is a vampire. other than that, the stories are two completely separate entities.
I'd rather people not copy my work, this is correct. but taking inspiration from it is fine?? as long as the inspiration inspires your own idea. this may shock you, but songbird took inspiration from the midnight series. and before you assume that series takes heavy influence from songbird, midnight existed first, hope that helps!
there is a fine line between taking inspiration and copying someone's work. copying songbird would be someone taking the plotline and ripping off of it. however taking inspiration would be putting your own spin on an idea or concept.
also it's not like I'm religiously stalking the mumscarian tag to see the fics either???
I don't know if you think I'm supposed to have a problem with other writers taking inspiration from me, but I don't. as long as the plot isn't a straight rip off from my own work, people can go crazy! creativity inspires creativity. that's how stories work! and that's okay. inspiration does NOT equal copying. are there some stories that draw a bit too much influence from my works? yes, I've seen them. and it's not like I can stop people from doing what they want. the most I can do is say "hey, please don't copy/rip off of my work" and hope that people are kind enough to listen.
as I always say, fanfic writing is a hobby, it's not serious or "professional" like publishing a book is. and BOY anon don't look at how publishing works, you might be upset over how the book marketing is done (spoiler alert: agents will ask you to compare your story to at least two other books that are similar to yours!)
you're allowed to take inspiration from the things you read.
and next time? you might want to check if the writers of the two fics you're claiming are "similar" are friends.

HI yes I've been thinking about it on and off all day LOL
It starts so fanfiction meet-cute. Poor overworked Mumbo who would never have any time for romance in his life has everything turned on its head when one day when walking back from work he's caught in the middle of a horrible villain attack. Not just that -- he's captured! Briefly, of course, before Hotguy rescues him.
Mumbo just about dies, right then and there. How pathetic would that have been? Has it really been that long since someone held him? (Yes. It has.)
When Hotguy sets him down he does his typical pull down of his glasses to give Mumbo a little wink and Mumbo almost faints, missing the look of genuine intrigue and affection on Hotguy's face.
Naturally, Mumbo becomes immediately and deeply infatuated with him. Hotguy symbolizes a fantastical escape from Mumbo's kinda shit life. His hours are long, his work isn't that fulfilling, and his roommate is LOUD and back at weird hours of the night, always bumping into things and waking him up. In his head, he lets Hotguy steal him away from that all....
Mumbo obviously thinks he's delusional for this. Hotguy does NOT think about him, because he's just some frazzled student who could hardly say thank you to the guy! But he gets to be a bit parasocial, as a treat. At least until his lease is up.
But Scar does think of him -- a lot. A cringe amount, for a superhero. It's inevitable they run into each other again and Hotguy offers to walk him home. From that moment forward it's over for both of them.
The decision to keep their eventual relationship private is a mutual one -- Scar doesn't want to subject Mumbo to that kind of press, nor does Mumbo really want to deal with it. Of course -- Mumbo emphasizes -- Scar would be worth it, but he would rather not.
A bit torn on where Grian is in this. He's either Cuteguy/another hero, or an extremely hero-critical reporter. Either way, he's definitely Mumbo's roommate who Mumbo is desperate to keep his fantasies/relationship private from.
There's a Mumscarian path here, too. If Grian is Cuteguy, he starts bothering Mumbo as Cuteguy to try and scare him off of Hotguy in an effort to keep Scar somewhat focused on his job. If he is a reporter, he wants to use his roommate's apparent relationship with a superhero to get some kind of dirt on the guy, because there's no way someone like that is all good. He's probably an asshole, Grian thinks.
ALSO a potential socmed angle which is sooo self indulgent for me specifically. I love you outsider pov social media fics. Would involve Mumbo and Scar's relationship leaking and ruining Mumbo's whole entire time because now he can't leave the house without someone stopping him on the street and asking about how Hotguy Really is. Plus sooo many unsolicited opinions about Scar's taste in men. Somewhat warranted.

Frankly, the fact that you've told us the Midnight Series is like, 80k and you've only published like, 40k is tormenting me and I want all of it so badly XD I just read the 7th part of the series and I'm so ready for them to be put through the paces - I set up my ao3 to email me whenever it updates so that I can snatch them up as they come out. Keep doing what you're doing <3
Haha it's now a lot more than 80k cuz I keep adding more <3 I keep writing new scenes and adding more context and stuff now that I have the freedom of a "series" instead so >:3 There's even more hjkgfdjkgfdjk (in fact I'm rewriting a portion of it right now aaaa)

Then mumbo?? You break up with your partner. You take custody of one kid, him the other. Move to a completely new place! You try to get over your ex. Then you meet a guy! This guy is wonderful! You get together! Your child is an ass! YOUR CHILDREN SWAP PLACES. They try and get you and your ex back together! You still have feelings for your ex! But you also love your boyfriend. The inner conflict??
And GRIAN. Same start as mumbo. But you're alone! Thats ok though, you dont need anyone else. Children. Swap. Places. But mumbo is with someone now! Hes happy! And you can't have feelings for him still right? No, that would be silly. You deny it. You pull away. Everything sets fire because thats a great representation of the mental stateof everyone at this point <33
Don’t tell me theres a point where everyone is broken up- emotionally and literally i mean... and then they have to sit and actually TALK to eachother... (although we both know you are excellent at writing talks) figure out their issues... think about the future... and where it leves them...

You may in fact hug Scar because warning, it is physically impossible for me to write a fic where Scar does not either physically or emotionally suffer <3 Being my bias means being pitiful and hurt between the bamfery <3<3 He will be put through the ringer BUT IT'S OKAAAAAY IT'S FIIIIIINE THERE'S A HAPPY ENDING <3 That probably begins as a V poly before eventually becoming a △ poly bc Scar and Grian wouldn't really know each other very well at that point but neither would ever ask Mumbo to give up someone he loves because they're both open-minded people who want Mumbo to be happy <3
Like imagine Mumbo and Grian sitting Grum and Jrum down to talk to them, finally tell them the truth about everything and answer their questions, and the old feelings coming back and they're able to laugh together and look like a family, and then Scar comes around the corner (out of sight) and just stops and watches them and realizes he really is an outsider here, b/c Mumbo and Grian are laughing together again and the twins look so happy- and Grum is smiling like he never does when Scar (and Tubbo) are around and just. Thinking that's how things should be, and just quietly leaving thinking about it and and and-
YEAH what a blow that will be <3 Mumbo will also suffer because his grumpy kid doesn't want a NEW family, just wants the family Mumbo they lost back and almost loses Scar (and Tubbo) AND Grian almost doesn't stay anyway when he comes to collect his kid (but oh how now that Grian knows Grum he doesn't want to let go, and same for Mumbo with Jrum </3 So now a proper and fair custody is needed and just hjfdsjk) but yeah Mumbo and Grum very nearly ending up alone AGAIN and Grum just realizing what he's cost Mumbo (at least Grum blames himself for it) bc Mumbo doesn't want to lose Scar just like he didn't want to lose Grian and just hjfdsjkfd
And Grian finding out that what happened ~11 years ago was a massive horrible terrible misunderstanding and Mumbo let him leave anyway, and finding out that Mumbo still loves him but Mumbo also has someone new who he loves and who loves him and just. Seeing what a mess everything is. And thinking he and Mumbo lost their chance over a decade ago and demanding if Mumbo is REALLY going to just let Scar walk away like he let Grian, AND over another misunderstanding (though this one a bittersweet misunderstanding rather than whatever absolute disaster happened between Mumbo and Grian), and just sjkfgdsfgk
AND YES THE BONDING. The sibling bonding. Grum having avoided Tubbo for the time he's known him, but Jrum quickly befriending Tubbo (and learning Tubbo and Scar's story that Grum never knew jhfdsjk) and Grum seeing his twin and Tubbo being friends and instead of being upset or jealous starts wondering what HE missed and just. Just. The crushing realization that he'll never know when Mumbo sits him down and tells him Scar and Tubbo aren't coming home and the "what have I done" when he sees how TIRED and SAD Mumbo is and thinks he's ruined his dad's second chance at happiness, gave up what he already had for something that he never even had in the first place and just hjfdsjkf. SO MUCH needing to be fixed I just-

#Equinox AU: A mumscarian AU loosely inspired by Greek mythology, with a focus on the myth of Hades and Persephone. Grian is the God of the Dead, Scar the God of Spring, and after millennia the constant dance of the seasons has taking enough of a toll that cracks are starting to appear in their marriage. Mumbo is a demigod who wants nothing to do with his divine ancestry, but when he falls in love with Scar on a warm spring day, he gets pulled into the world of the Gods nonetheless. Also features biggri and treebark. Double Life fix-it Mythology AU with angst, fluff, romance, misunderstandings, and ultimately a happy ending.

#Kingdom of Boatem: a mumscarian arranged marriage AU. Scar is an elven prince, engaged to the youngest son of the Queen of Boatem since a young age. However, when tragedy strikes Scar’s betrothed, an entirely unprepared Mumbo, has to ascend the throne with Scar at his side. The matter is made no less complicated by the fact that Mumbo is in love with another man - his bodyguard Grian. Fantasy AU with hurt/comfort, denial of feelings, mutual pining, and medium-burn romance.

Happy Holidays! I uh. I wrote 10,000 words of Mumscarian [Or, Mumscarian Set Up in one case] fanfics for my friends and for you, my lovely readers. Without much further ado, here they are!
The Stars Float In Your Coffee - Written for @mochiwrites. A Fantasy AU based on Season 8 of Hermitcraft featuring Mumscarian + Boatem Found Family. Some Hurt/Comfort, some soup making, all good stuff. 2,833 words.
A Place In Between - Written for @braxiatel. Based on an idea they sent me and Atherix one day where Mumbo ended up in a Fae Custody Battle between the Vex and the Mother Spore. Featuring Mumbo, Scar, and Grian in a way that can be read as platonic or future romance. Lots of banter, lots of fluff. 2,302 words.
Home for the Holidays - Written for @sparksnevadas. Mumbo is finally back on the server after the crossover ends and, well, he's found Scar and Grian are in need of a little TLC. Very domestic, much sharing of a bed, my de facto Christmas fic. 2,682 words.
Healing Touch, Creaking Ship - Written for @atherix. Based on Atherix's Flying Pirate Ship au where Scar is an elven captain and Mumbo and Grian are on his crew. They just finished fighting the navy and are left to deal with their injuries and spend time togeter. Much Hurt, Much Comfort. 2,455 words.
