45. have you ever been in a boat?
I complain about people never playing ask games with me and then I forget to answer when they do, the hypocrisy and the ADD are strong with this one
Once! Did not like it! I love the water, but this was a tippy little guy that made me very sick to my stomach
oh wait wait there was my friend’s rowboat a couple years ago— yeah that was leaky but real fun :D

Hey Salty! I made a Birb AU for yer SAM:PN
Tumblr media
Basically, the Player who's also a bird handler for a wildlife sanctuary happened to get into a situation where the bois turned into Birbs for who knows how long.
They pretty much constantly wear their protective bird gear as to not get clawed in by the bois who constantly try to perch somewhere on Reader, with Hank as the biggest offender.
As for reasons the kind of birbs they are;
Hank's a Harpy Eagle cause of how they're really strong and big, being known as one of the strongest birds of prey on earth.
Sanford and 2BDamned are both owls bc of their canonically similar body builds.
Sanford being a Snowy Owl cause of how they square up and win against many different opponents. Snowy Owls can and will pretty much fight against animals bigger than them.
2BDamned being a Great Horned Owl being similar to Sanford. Stronk bois and their whole vibe of being intelligent and shit. It just fits him really.
Deimos as a Peregrine Falcon cause of him being a quick lil guy yet still dangerously good at his whole killing thing yanno?
Sorry if this doesn't make much sense lol. Not the best at describing things the way I wann'em too
(Harpy Eagles are so hard to draw. Also, sorry if Deimos is a lil too bright. I'll likely try to fix it later)
Omg! This is fantastic, I absolutely love it. <33333 You were spot on with your analysis of which bird they should be, with how Sanford and 2B would be owls because of their similar body builds while Dei is a peregrine falcon because of his speed. Hank being a Harpy Eagle is just such a good idea too, considering their size and how they excel at hunting.
This drawing is also really cute too, especially since you included their masks and other unique details. They're honestly just really adorable, even if their constant attempts to perch on you could get a little annoying. I can definitely tell why the Player had to use special protective gear since I don't think having four large birds of prey on you would be very light haha.
Speaking of the Player, while I'm not sure how the boys would end up as birds, it certainly wouldn't stop their attempts to "cuddle" with you. If anything, it just might make them do it more; it's not like Doc can do any work without hands, and the boys probably aren't effective at their missions like this (unless we're talking recon, cause who'd suspect a bird of spying on them). So now you have to deal with four huge birds attempting to take your attention, usually by perching on your arms and shoulders or barrelling into your lap so you can pet them. I can also see them attempting to impress you by flying and doing some tricks they figure out (mainly Deimos, but Hank definitely isn't opposed to doing the same).
(Although, they probably wouldn't have the best grasp of flying once they're first turned. Watching them crash goes from funny to horrifying real quickly once you realize just how brittle their now-hollow bones are. Luckily for you, they're quite sturdy, but it's not like they're unwilling to play up any injuries they might get just to feel you touching them and have you looking them over for longer.)
Also, I can see them just randomly attacking grunts if you have to go out (to get them food, no doubt) and someone is stupid enough to get in your way. Like imagine just being an agent and trying to capture this target the Auditor apparently needs back, only to be swarmed by four birds; having their talons claw into you as they peck at your visual cross and screech at you. And then having to explain to your supervisor why you're covered in so many bloody scratches and without the "Player."
You'd also probably have to explain to Jebus what happened because I think he'd probably be furious to find you without anybody for protection if he visits one day. He'd understand at the look of the odd birds who hang around you though, but you might have to stop Hank from trying to mess with him once he gets too close to your personal bubble. (And don't even get me started on Tricky; it's hard to kill him as a grunt, but Hank's not above trying even if he's not one anymore.)

Any news or suggestions of a possibly love interest for lonely Emmeline?
Darling Anonymous,
If you've found this bewitching parchment on your desk, then you're on the privileged guest list of Rita Skeeter's tea-time tale, coated with lashings of intrigue and a dollop of sinfully delightful scandal. Hold on to your pointed hats, dear readers of the Daily Prophet, as I, your ever-dedicated scribe, prepare to reveal the underbelly of our magical world's most tantalising tidbits.
Now, let's talk about our 'lovable' hermit, the one and only Emmeline Vance. The Curse Breaker of consequence has been causing ripples in the enchanted pool of society with her peculiar habits and conspicuously absent romantic endeavours.
As we all know, Severus Snape is not a man prone to social engagements. Yet, it seems that our reserved potioneer can't seem to keep his steely gaze off our enchanting Vance. An anonymous source reports hearing whispered conversations in the dim corridors of The White Wyern. There may not be any love potions at play, but this pair's simmering undercurrents are raising eyebrows, and, dare I say, temperatures.
But my oh my, isn't the plot thickening? Just the other day, a flustered gnome (who wishes to remain anonymous for fear of reprisal) claims to have spotted Emmeline sharing a cozy Butterbeer with the wizarding world's most eligible bachelor, Gilderoy Lockhart. Now, this dashing cad's charm is almost as renowned as his sparkly teeth, but could he be the one to thaw our icy maiden's heart?
We then approach the morose figure of Peter Pettigrew. Yes, our own pub-crawling Death Eater turned bartender. This pairing would be as startling as a Crumple-Horned Snorkack at a dinner party. Yet, several eyewitnesses (and their pet owls) swear to have seen Emmeline sharing earnest glances with him. Such a dark, tortured love story would undoubtedly be a guilty pleasure to watch unfold!
Moving further into the realm of the fantastical, suppose we pictured our reclusive curse-breaker entwined in a romantic riddle with none other than the feisty Rolanda Hooch? Now that's a Quidditch match I'd pay Galleons to watch! Two formidable women, fierce as a Hungarian Horntail, tackling the winds of passion. What a twist!
Now, brace yourselves for the most scandalous piece of conjecture yet - a rumoured liaison between Vance and the notorious Alice Lestrange. Yes, you heard right, Lestrange. An insider from the Ministry reports spotting the duo deep in conversation on several occasions. Talk about an explosion in the cauldron!
In this whirlwind of speculation, dear readers, we can only clutch our cloaks and watch as the heart's game plays out. Whichever way the love potion flows, your eyes and ears in the shadows, Rita Skeeter, promises to deliver the juicy morsels first-hand!
Scandalously yours,
Rita Skeeter.

Welcome, storytellers of the fantastical and the fearful! 🌌🦁 As we journey through the days of December 4th to the 8th, let us blend the realms of horror and fantasy into tapestries rich with wonder and dread. In your world-building, may you find the delicate balance between the eerie unknown and the awe-inspiring. This week's ledger of opportunities is imbued with the potential for both the wondrous and the terrifying, each link a gateway to new realms where your stories can flourish in the shadowed corners of imagination. As we delve into this week, consider the unique character of early December: Did you know that December 5th is known as Krampusnacht in some European traditions? This evening is marked by the appearance of Krampus, a horned, anthropomorphic figure who, in contrast to Saint Nicholas, punishes naughty children. This folklore encapsulates the dual nature of the season – the light and the dark, the joyous and the terrifying, themes ripe for exploration in horror fantasy. "Sometimes fairy stories may say best what's to be said," wrote C.S. Lewis. Let this wisdom guide you as you weave narratives where the fantastical elements serve to illuminate deeper truths, where the veil between worlds is thin, and where the eerie and the enchanting intertwine. As December's chill seeps into your tales, let them be a vessel for the ancient stories and myths, the kind that echo the depths of human fears and desires. May your writing this week be a tribute to the power of myth and the enduring resonance of fairy tales, where every shadow holds a mystery, and every light a hope. 📖❄️🌑 You can watch the video below: https://youtu.be/jzOuVH9fTnY This week's vid is up and I've spoken about: Obsidian Butterfly - Horror over the Handlebars https://horrortree.com/taking-submissions-horror-over-the-handlebars/ Owl Crate - Monsters in Masquerade https://horrortree.com/taking-submissions-monsters-in-masquerade/ Corvid Queen https://horrortree.com/taking-submissions-corvid-queen-2024-submission-window/ Haven Speculative https://horrortree.com/taking-submissions-haven-speculative-2024-limited-submissions-call-1-early/ Thanks as always, and if you're looking to support Horror Tree, please be sure to subscribe to our Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/horrortree Donate to our Ko-Fi: https://ko-fi.com/horrortree or order one of our recent editions of Trembling With Fear! Running a Marathon in Narnia
Tumblr media
Running a marathon in Narnia? Sure, it could happen...
Let me transport you to the enchanting realm of Narnia, where a marathon becomes a breathtaking journey through a land of wonder and majesty. Imagine the thrill of exploring this mythical world with each stride, as you embark on a marathon unlike any other.
As you stand at the starting line, a sense of anticipation fills the air. The mystical creatures of Narnia gather around, their eyes filled with curiosity and excitement. Talking animals, from regal lions to wise owls, watch with keen interest, their presence adding a touch of awe to the atmosphere. With a gentle breeze carrying the scent of pine trees and wildflowers, the starting horn resounds, and off you go!
The path before you winds through dense forests, where ancient trees whisper ancient secrets. Sunlight filters through the canopy, casting a magical glow on the moss-covered ground. You might spot friendly woodland creatures joining you for a stretch—squirrels scampering alongside, rabbits hopping through the underbrush, and deer leaping gracefully, as if in a choreographed dance.
As you traverse the forest, the melody of birdsong provides a soundtrack to your run. Each chirp and trill harmonizes with the rhythm of your breath, creating a symphony that celebrates the harmony of nature and the joy of movement. Be prepared for the occasional mischievous nymph or satyr, peeking out from behind trees and adding a whimsical touch to your journey.
Soon, the landscape opens up to breathtaking vistas. Rolling hills, adorned with vibrant wildflowers, stretch as far as the eye can see. Majestic waterfalls cascade down rocky cliffs, their spray refreshing your face as you pass. You might even catch a glimpse of unicorns galloping through meadows, their graceful presence inspiring you to find your own inner strength and grace.
But it wouldn't be Narnia without a touch of the fantastical. As you approach a serene, frozen lake, you notice that the ice sings with each step you take. The delicate, ethereal sounds reverberate through the air, creating a mesmerizing melody that accompanies you on your marathon odyssey. It's as if the very landscape is encouraging you to keep moving forward, to embrace the magic of the moment.
As you near the climax of your race, you find yourself in the presence of Aslan, the magnificent lion and the true ruler of Narnia. His golden mane glistens in the sunlight, exuding an aura of strength and wisdom. With a regal nod, Aslan acknowledges your determination and perseverance, instilling in you a sense of courage and resolve that carries you to the final stretch.
Finally, you approach the finish line, welcomed by a jubilant crowd composed of Narnians and humans alike. Fauns play merry tunes on their panpipes, centaurs raise their hooves in applause, and a chorus of voices fills the air with jubilation. As you cross the finish line, a sense of accomplishment washes over you, accompanied by the knowledge that you have not only completed a marathon but also experienced a wondrous adventure that will forever reside in your heart.
Running a marathon in Narnia is more than a physical feat; it's an immersive journey through a world brimming with beauty, magic, and the boundless power of imagination. So, my fellow runner, as you tie your shoelaces and dream of extraordinary landscapes, close your eyes, believe in the impossible, and let Narnia ignite your running spirit.

Any cursed biology knowledge to share with the class then Vazel?
I dont know about "cursed" but techincally speaking if Stolas is an owl this means he has a uropygial gland, this gland is so birds can produce an oil for preening, waterproofing, ect. (you can look up uropygial gland and read up). On Owls they have one at the base of the tail. Technically this means Stolas is not just oily but specifically his butt. If Blitzo is based on a iguana based on his back spikes which tend to be one of the most prominent features maintained on iguanas, he should have a parietal eye which would presumably be where his forehead mark is as it's also not a readily visible thing. While Pikachu was design wise based upon a squirrel, in Detective Pikachu they gave him no paw pads, this is fairly consistent with how Pikachu moves as being a pokemon that seems to walk both digitgrade and plantigrade like rabbits, most of them do not have paw pads because they don't handle repeated impact very well and so instead they developed shock absorbing fur to withstand it. Tomato frogs sweat glue. No show connected i just remember that often and think it is cool. If any creatures you create have massive horns and or ears, they're likely important for temperature regulation because it allows blood to travel closer to the surface of the body and cool down before going back in. In the US when everyone was trying to kill off wolves, they also after some time tried to kill off coyotes seeing them as more pathetic wolves (iirc it was Mark Twain who even hated them and may have somewhat jump started this as he owned many cats and its likely some were killed by coyotes) but part of why the hate has remained persistent unlike wolves is because we failed to kill them because Coyotes have a thing where if they know theres less coyotes in the area they'll adjust their litter size to have more. I highly recommend looking up biology of the animals referenced for the fantastical creatures you create as it can lead to a lot of interesting things to consider! And if not at least can be funny to learn!

Bird Call: A great horned owl love affair | Lifestyle
Bird Call: A great horned owl love affair | Lifestyle
I am a journalist by day. And at night, I hunt owls. And by hunting, I deliberately head out at twilight to score a sight of a fantastic animal, not claim them with my bow and arrow. I’m not Van Helsing. All I find on my journey are great horned owls, although there was a spectacular sighting of a ghostly barn owl at Fountain Creek Nature Center a few years ago, recognizable for its distinctive…

Amity/ The Owl House + Celestial Imagery
Getting ready for Eclipse Lake
So, with Eclipse Lake coming out on Saturday and some serious Amity development ahead, I just wanted to talk about/ go over some of the lunar and celestial imagery in the series thus far (particularly in regards to Amity), and some of my theories.
A lot of this was covered in this post by @sugarcubetikki (one of the best Owl House blogs right now in my humble opinion-- the s2 coverage/ reblog over there each week is top notch), and I would like to add a few of my thoughts. @not-so-average-fangirl also has some wonderful theories/ thoughts on this in her many Owl House videos.
This meta about celestial imagery in TOH, and this meta about King’s connection to eclipses, are fantastic as well.
So-- where to start?
Lunar, eclipse, and overall celestial imagery are particularly prominent in season 2, most notably in the character of The Collector and the Eclipse Lake which undoubtedly connects to the Day of Unity (an eclipse being a union of the sun and moon). We see it all over the Collector’s design, and the crescent moon) the same as Amity’s necklace) above the Titan.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It should be noted that this looks suspiciously like King’s species-- the skull/ amour head, the horns, and fans coming down. With the symbolism in King’s nursery, his kind is likely connected to the Day of Unity as well as the eclipse.
And then, of course, there’s Amity’s necklace which showcases a crescent moon. It should be noted that this changing moon can not only parallel Amity’s arc as she changes and break free of her family, but it is specifically a waning crescent.
The last light before darkness, but also the promise of new beginnings. This is the darkest night before the dawn.
Tumblr media
And there is the moon imagery ALL over her design, and in Dana’s art which she always sneaks clues into.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So... what is Amity’s connection to the eclipse, and the Eclipse Lake?
Some people think she could become the Collector, and if this is a role/ duty passed down from person to person I could really see this happening and like this theory. Perhaps she takes on the role to help get the cure for Luz? If Luz’s condition is dire, I can see her doing that. This would especially make sense if the Collector is tied to the Eclipse Lake. Which....
Given the location of Eda’s segment of KKKOHD where we see the Collector, she very well could be.
No matter what, Amity is most definitely tied into the celestial themes of this season, and I suspect it’s tied to the eclipse/ Day of Unity.
If Belos is planning another Day of Unity to gain more power/ control, and the Day of Unity requires a sacrifice or “chosen” to do the ritual, Amity could be a prime candidate. Given that he needs all witches in a coven as well, Amity’s interest in going to the human realm with Luz might also be a threat to his plans. This would also explain why Belos (or Hunter sent on his behalf) is after the lake while Amity is as well.
Whatever Belos needs the portal for, I suspect it will be destroyed in the end and mean Luz can’t go home. Given the very solid “Belos is Phillip/ a human” theory I love, this would give him even further motivation.
In the end, my guess is that the “Day of Unity” must occur on the eclipse or crescent moon, at the Eclipse Lake, and that both Amity and King are tied to this, as well as the Collector. Amity might be tied to the Collector and chosen for Belos’s plans, while King and his kind are likely liked the eclipse and the Titan as well.
Given that Eda seemed to “heal” by the lake, and Luz appears to be healing from her illness in it’s waters, or undergoing some level of transformation, my guess it has magical properties of a transformative nature that perhaps created the portal in the first place, and are connected to how the Owl Beast was able to be cursed into a scroll by the Collector.
Tumblr media
If the Collector is indeed connected to the Eclipse Lake, could she be watching over its waters? Could she be a third party antagonist who knows what Belos is planning and serves as its guardian? If something happens to her in all of this, could she chose Amity to wield her mantle next and pass down the cloak?
It’s no coincidence Amity has all of this moon imagery, and Eclipse Lake is an episode centered on her. There are all of these potential threads, and I can’t wait to see how they connect. Saturday morning, we will most definitely be getting a piece of the puzzle!

In honor of The Owl House’s return in two days, I drew TOH!Benchtrio! Ranboo’s in Potions coven and Oracle coven, Tubbo’s in construction coven, and Tommy’s in beast keeping coven.
(Image description under the cut)
[Image description: A digital character line-up of Ranboo, Tubbo, and Tommy in the style of Dana Terrace’s The Owl House. All three of them are wearing the coven uniforms mandated by Hexside: short black hooded capes, dark grey tunics, and black boots.
Ranboo is a tall lavender-colored reptilian. He’s wearing a pair of green-and-red oval glasses and a black-and-white face mask, under which presumably has an abomination of a mouth. His sleeves are yellow, and his pants are purple, indicating he’s in two coven tracks: Potions and Oracle. He wears a paper crown on his head and holds a green and gold book in his left hand.
Tubbo is a short satyr/goat hybrid with goat legs, ears, and a light brown overgrown brown hair, out of which peek two pair of formidable horns (the top ones are thick and curling; a long thin pair extend from the side). An eye and a mischievous grin peek out from beneath his bangs. His sleeves and pants are a dark brown, indicating that he’s in the Construction track. He holds an oversized hammer behind his back.
Tommy is a blond-haired, brace-faced witch with pointed ears. He’s standing confidently, resting his weight on his left leg, hand on his hip. His other hand holds up a coil of rope, which he uses to wrangle fantastical creatures. His sleeves and pants are a light orangey-brown, indicating that he is in the Beastkeeping track. His cape and tunic are ripped in places by claws.
The background is a simplified, stylized redraw of one of the hallways at Hexside academy. The trio stands in front of a row of red lockers, partitioned off by two marble pillars.]

What I Thought About "Echoes of the Past" from The Owl House
Salutations, random people on the internet who most certainly won’t read this. I am an Ordinary Schmuck. I write stories and reviews and draw comics and cartoons.
What probably gets debated the most in the fandom is the legitimacy behind King being the King of Demons. Some believe that there's truth to his statement, while others, like me, like to think that he was just some stray Eda picked up off the streets. Either option seemed likely, especially since Season One never gave an answer that leaned one way or the other.
Then here comes the writers finally answering the question of who King is in episode THREE of Season Two! Because, again, they don't waste time on giving fans exactly what they want.
Fans wanted answers behind King, we got 'em, and analyzing what those answers mean requires going deep into spoilers. So if you haven't checked the episode out yet, I highly recommend that you do. Trust me, it's worth seeing.
Now let's review, shall we?
WHAT I LIKED
Luz Experimenting with Spells: Hey, look! More proof that Luz isn't an idiot like some people flanderize her to be!
But, seriously though, this is a perfect little thread to introduce into the story. Luz collecting knowledge from Lilith's old books and past work she and Eda made adds to Luz's intelligence while also providing a believable explanation for how she gets new spells. It's also nice to see that she has this little notebook (or spellbook) to help see what works and what doesn't. It's a level of experimentation that proves her dedication to becoming a witch while also exemplifying how she isn't stupid. Occasionally reckless, sure, but you can't say that the person who figured out an invisibility spell through showing her work is also an idiot.
Francios with a Knife: How did Francois get a knife? I don't know. But the fact that a random knife plopped out behind him with little to no explanation is funny, and I will not hear otherwise.
I don't make the rules. I just abide by them.
Luz’s Invisibility Spell: I breezed past this, but I honestly love this invisibility spell. More specifically, I love that there's a limiter. It can turn you, objects, and people you're in contact with invisible, but only as long as you can hold your breath. It helps make the spell something the characters can't always rely on, which is appreciated. Because if it works as long as they concentrate, what's stopping them from sneaking into Belos' castle and assassinating him in his sleep? It's a smart way of explaining why they can't always rely on something, despite how insanely useful it is.
Luz: Let's gush about Luz some more, shall we!
"Echoes of the Past" is another episode that has Luz on top form. She is constantly supportive of King, even if Lilith has a point in the dangers of indulging his fantasy as a powerful tyrant. Doing so would cause more harm than good, especially when King finds out Luz doesn't believe him, but her going along with it was all done with the best of intentions. Luz doesn't want to hurt her friend, and even if she did in the long run, she still makes up for it by helping King learn more about his past.
And, as another reminder, Luz isn't stupid. She's the first to say they should leave when it's clear how dangerous the castle is and is quick to figure out there should be more at the top. Luz is a loyal and caring friend who's also guarded and intuitive when the situation calls for it. This episode understood that, so here's hoping other fans will too.
Lilith: Yeah, she's still growing on me.
I feel like this episode shows a better idea of Lilith's place in the group more than the past two. She's a person who's obsessed with knowledge and learning but considers herself above the jovial nature of King, Luz, and definitely Eda. Therefore, she acts as the perfect catalyst for what jumpstarts this week's adventure. It doesn't surprise me in the slightest that she almost instantly dismisses King's claims due to considering herself more knowledgeable than everyone else. Still, I like how she's willing to believe King once she finally sees evidence that seemingly proves he really was the King of Demons, to the point of referring to him as "her lord." Hooty does the same thing, but it comes across as him fearing for his own life and choosing to be friends with someone who could maybe kill him in an instant. For Lilith, her newfound respect comes from the desire to learn more, and it's that desire that makes Lilith an enjoyable character to me. It's adorable to see, and it has some comedic flavor in moments like when she dismisses everyone else and their emotional revelations to take pictures of the carvings around her. I'm sure she'll cause some controversy like other characters with rushed reformations, but for me, I'm more than ok with her addition to the main cast.
More of Lilith’s and Hooty’s Friendship: HOW DOES THIS WORK!?
ON PAPER, IT SEEMS LIKE IT WOULD BE A BAD IDEA, BUT IT F**KING WORKS!
HOW?!
WHAT BLACK MAGIC DID THESE WRITERS USE TO MAKE A RELATIONSHIP SO UNEXPECTED COME ACROSS AS SO ENDEARING AND ADORABLE?!
And where can I get some for my stories...just asking.
But seriously: HOW?!
Hooty Making Himself Portable: Ah, yes. The classic bit where a character does something horrifically grotesque off-screen, and we have nothing but character reactions and sound effects to imagine what happened between shot A and shot B. It's an oldie, but given how hard I was laughing (mostly because of Luz's gagging), it's still a goodie.
Eda’s Portable Bathtub Boat Thing: I mean...I was expecting Eda would use something to catch up with the others, but...that thing...well...I mean, I'm still laughing just by thinking about it. That should tell you how well executed this joke was.
John Luke: ...I'm gonna go ahead and add him to the list because HOLY S**T was this guy disturbing! From his design to his movements to even the sounds he makes when moving, everything about John Luke screams as something that will stay in kids' nightmares for a while. Now, this might seem like a complaint, but to be honest, I'm more than alright with how creepy John Luke is. I highly doubt adult viewers will consider John Luke scary, but I guarantee he'll terrify some of the youngins that this series is aimed for. And that's fine. It's good to creep kids out a little bit with something somewhat scary, as it might introduce them to more good horror stories later in life.
Plus, the reveal that John Luke was only a guard for King is pretty solid narratively speaking. You can see how John never really meant to hurt King aside from one accident when Eda escaped with him. If you want to read into it, I guess it might be questionable to tell kids that something that looks dangerous is secretly nice, but that's really nitpicky, in my opinion. John Luke was a fantastic threat that is designed and animated well, with a solidly executed twist. Some might hate what he presents, most will fear him, but we can all agree on one thing: His theme is awesome (can I get the track for that, please)!
King’s Backstory: Finally, at long last, we know who King is, thus putting an end to a year-long debate. And I fully mean it when I say that the writers gave the best possible answer. Because in a way, everyone was right. Yes, King was just an animal that Eda decided to adopt, like the nature-loving hippie she is inside (She's got the hair for it). However, while he may not be the King of Demons himself, he is still the son of someone who deserves that title. So while he isn't the King, there's a chance he might be the Prince. Once again, there's no direct answer, but given how the writers came up with something that pleases everyone while still providing more questions for debate, it acts as a brilliant move, in my opinion. So whatever answer we get next, I'm sure it will be just as perfect.
Baby King:
Tumblr media
My heart was not prepared for that level of cuteness!
King’s Breakdown: NOR WAS IT READY FOR THIS LEVEL OF SADNESS!
But in all seriousness, a HUGE round of applause to Alex Hirsch for his performance in this episode. He expertly captured the raw emotions of shock, anger, betrayal, and sadness that King must have felt when finding out that everything he believed he was is a lie. It's one of those moments where I don't hear a person voicing lines in a booth (or wherever the hell VAs are voicing characters nowadays), but instead hear a living person being emotionally torn apart. It was heartbreaking seeing King so vulnerable as he's so guarded with his emotions. Seeing him like this adds so much more layers to a character that many would mistake him as a cute, comedic animal sidekick. But just like with Luz, there's more to him than people will tell you.
“I don’t even know what’s real or fake anymore!”: I'm just pointing out this line because I believe it's what convinces Luz to help King learn more about who he is. Hell, not knowing what's real or fake is the main reason why Luz got sent away in the first place, so I feel like she can relate to King when he's in a similar predicament.
Hooty and Lilith vs John Luke: This was just a cool scene with some epic moments of dodging John Luke's attacks and some funny ones, like how Hooty said the word "pain." It's a ten out of ten that I would rewind to watch again.
King’s Other Horn: I'd question the logistics of how a horn that got broken off when he was a baby still manages to fit perfectly in the present...but it is neat symbolism of King accepting his past and letting it be a part of him, so who cares?
(The fact that the colors of the broken-off piece don't match the rest of the horn is nice attention to detail as well.)
WHAT I DISLIKED
It's a Little Too Predictable: I pretty much figured almost every little twist the episode offers. But, I'm willing to say that's because I'm in my twenties, and I've seen enough stories similar to this one, so I'm more likely to know what will happen. The little monsters watching this will see it for the first time, so they'll most likely get more surprised than me...And that was my only complaint about the episode...which is more of a personal problem than an actual issue...I guess that means it's perfect.
IN CONCLUSION
"Echoes of the Past" is an easy A+ in my book. It gives lore and backstory that furtherly develops the characters that episodes like this should. It also tells a tragic story about King that still sprinkles in a few good jokes every now and again to lighten up the mood. Sure, there are some nitpicks I could mention (how did King remember his own birth?). But when the good stuff is done so well, what's the point of dwelling on small, insignificant issues? This is still a phenomenal episode that flew past all expectations I had for it, and it continues the winning steak this season is having so far.
(But that's still three home runs in a row. Meaning that a stinker is coming. Ooiee, is it coming!)
