there’s this rhetoric i hear a lot when whitewashing in casting is criticized, and it’s “Did a person of X ethincity/race audition?” as a gotcha--that it’s okay they cast a white person, because what if no one who wasn’t white auditioned! 

Which... is such a childish view of how movies and casting even work. For starters, when there are auditions, casting calls will usually describe the character including race and ethnicity if there is one in mind. If they exclude mentioning a race/ethnicity for a pre-existing character who is not white, that’s a bad sign, and it happens often. 

Secondly.... You guys know not every movie role has open auditions, right? Like, some roles, especially big ones, involve calling an actor’s agent and asking them to audition for it, or even if they just... are interested in the role. Like, not every role gets a casting call that anyone can try out for, and thinking that’s the case is so... childish. That’s not how it works. Sometimes a director or casting agent is like “we should get FamousPerson McWhite to play Character O. Colour” so they call them and the person says yes, potentially unaware that the character isn’t white or straight up not caring because they’re racist.

 That’s why you see such big names in a lot of these white washing roles, or people who already had connections via famous family.

Or, that one actor in the last Hellboy movie who dropped out of the role because he was totally unaware that the character wasn’t white in the comics, because he likely wasn’t told at any stage of the process he had to go through to be hired and wasn’t familiar with the original work.
