WELCOME TO TDP BATTLE SHIPS!
Welcome back, friends!
After a two year break I return to you with a new shipping tournament, which is a continuation of Rarepair Rumble.
While Rarepair Rumble was a celebration of rare and less popular ships, Battle Ships is an event where canon ships meet popular noncanon ships.
About the event
Battle ships is a non-elimination style tournament based on the Swiss tournament system which means that all ships will be present in every round and each round will face a different opponent.
Here’s a google presentation where I explain the event in detail and provide a breakdown of how each round will look like.
Participants
The list of Battle Ships participants consists of three groups:
canon ships;
popular noncanon ships;
top 6 ships from Rarepair Rumblr.
The first two groups are ships that were excluded from Rarepair Rumble. They are the reason I made this event in the first place, actually.

Tournament rounds
There will be 5 rounds in total. Which ships will face which each round will depend on their results accumulated in the previous rounds, with the goal of matching similar opponents. Basically, a ship with 3 victories will face a ship with 2 to 4 victories and not a ship with 0 or 1 victory. See the google presentation for a more detailed explanation.
Voting
Voting for ships will be done the same way it was in Rarepair Rumble. I will use google forms, as last time. Here’s an example of how the voting choices will look like:
You will always have the choice not to vote for either ship for whatever reason.
Social media presence
Unlike Rarepair Rumble, I will only be updating this event on tumblr, reddit, twitter and certain discord servers. It is too much work to manage more social media than that. However, you are free to share the event information with your friends c:
What happens at the end?
A winner is chosen (I may or may not draw art of them. No promises!) and I will also make a league table according to the ships’ score.

Let's dive deeper into the results below
Once again, here's a breakdown of votes by favorite ship.
NOTE: When I say “[SHIP NAME] shippers” or “[SHIP NAME] fans”, I refer to the people who took part in this specific round and chose [SHIP NAME] as their favorite ship.
Firstly, I wanted to comment on how active Rayllum shippers were this round! 47 people or half of total voters!
There were more Ruthari shippers, too (14), yet Viravos and Janaya numbers doesn't seem to grow. Also, 4 Virrow shippers and 3 Claaravos.
No surprises here.
Some Rayllum fans, understandably, found it hard to choose between two faves, while most other shippers seem to prefer Ruthari. Although some Viravos and Janaya shippers do like both ships.
I expected Harrai to win but not by this much! Admittedly, there's a number of people who like both ships but in this fandom canon ships always always win against noncanon ones, which we can see depicted in the table below:
Another expected result with unexpected proportions. Clauderry seemed like an popular newcomer among canon ships. However, Janaya is part of the big three and has had a much larger impact on the fandom as a whole over the years.
It's interesting how proportionally, Viravos shippers seem the most likely to pick Clauderry. What I mean is, it was picked by 12% of Rayllum shippers, 14% of Ruthari shippers and 23% of Viravos shippers. I'm not counting Virrow shippers because their margin of error is 49%. It's possible than while many shippers like Clauderry, Janaya is still many people's favorite, especially when it comes to Rayllum and Ruthari shippers. More Rayllum shippers chose the "I like both" when their own ship went against Ruthari than they did here, when Clauderry went against Janaya. Claaravos shippers are known to vote against rival ships.
I'll be honest, I didn't know who would win, since both are canon background ships, but I guess Lain and Tiadrin are Rayla's parents (and still alive). Notice how we get the biggest number of people who voted "I don't care" so far this round. In fact, it's going to be the second biggest.
Virrow shippers seem to be the only ones preferring the Queens of Duren, while Viravos and Janaya shippers don't show a strong preference either way. Ruthari shippers' votes absolutely make sense since Rutahri and Laidrin are friends. So do the Rayllum shippers' votes.
After Viravos lost to Corpeli by a hair split last round, I was sure we'd see a closer match between Viravos and Grazi. However, it seems Grazi isn't as popular. In addition, a quarter of people either don't care about either ship ir don't like them altogether.
Rayllum and Janaya shippers seem split between the two, while Ruthari shippers are showing a slight preference towards Grazi. Virrow shippers are, as always, in solidarity with Viravos shippers and Claaravos once again vote against their rival.
Another category where I expected a closer match. They got the biggest number of people who don't like either ship, too!
Rayllum shippers are split between both choices and disliking both as well. Ruthari and Claaravos also don't show a strong preference. However, Viravos once again voted in solidarity with Virrow and Janaya voted against their rival.
Here it is - the biggest number of "I don't care" voters this round :D despite that, Ezranya still managed to win with a big difference.
While most shippers don't seem to show a clear preference, the big three - Rayllum, Ruthari and Janaya - prefer Ezranya. It's a very strong preference in Rayllum's case, too!
Finally, poor Claaravos can never catch a break. They were beaten by Avibeia, a ship that, until now, lost every battle due to irrelevance. And they were beaten by a huge difference in votes even with almost a third of the voters either not caring about or disliking both ships.
The only ship without a clear preference is Viravos. The big three clearly favos Avibeia, while Virrow shippers prefer Claaravos.
Alright, that was it for this round. Next stop - the finale!

Battle Ships Round 3 Results

I once again made a table of votes by ship but I only included the results for Rayllum, Viravos, Ruthari and Janaya, because these got the most votes.
(I spoke in more detail about the margin of error and the relevance of these results in my post about Round 2 results)
NOTE: When I say “[SHIP NAME] shippers” or “[SHIP NAME] fans”, I refer to the people who took part in this specific round and chose [SHIP NAME] as their favorite ship.
Rayllum's victory here did not surprise anyone, I'm sure. What I found surprising was the number of Rayllum shippers who chose "I like both":
Viravos shippers, naturally, lean more towards Harrai, while Ruthari and Janaya - towards Rayllum. Only two people said they didn't like either ship and one of them was a Viravos shipper.
While Clauderry is enjoying popularity even before S4 has even aired, there was no way it would defeat an established giant like Ruthari.
It seems that the bulk of Clauderry's votes (10 out of 16) comes from Rayllum shippers, despite them still showing a preference towards Ruthari. The distribution of Viravos votes is almost equal on the grand scale of things, though Ruthari is still winning. 2 out of 4 people who didn't like either ship were Rayllum shippers, which I found surprising.
I honestly expected this to be a more equal match.
The big ship preferences seem quite intuitive here, though the dislike both choices are still surprising on Rayllum and Janaya's part.
Another instance where I expected a more equal match, however, most of the big ships lean towards Anneha, with Rayllum showing the biggest preference.
This one was very intense to observe! Viravos was leading at the very beginning until Corpeli started accumulating votes. Numerically, it's 27 votes for Viravos vs 29 votes for Corpeli.
Interestingly, Ruthari and Janaya seem to have different preferences here, with Janaya being the ones to prefer Viravos over Corpeli, which I found very surprising, but this is most likely due to my tiny sample size. Notice how the "don't like either" part has increased compared to the results above.
This one was not at all surprising. In fact, only 7 people voted for Sabos. And 5 of those votes come from Rayllum shippers.
This one was also pretty close, only 5 votes apart. It's incredible how many people chose "I don't like either", considering that Avibeia is a canon ship.
Most of Avibeia votes come from Rayllum shippers, who generally prefer canon ships to noncanon ones. Viravos shippers seem generally undecided, while Ruthari and Janaya shippers clearly show preference towards Grazi.
The category with Claaravos is always the most controversial.
Only Rayllum and Viravos shippers even voted for Claaravos, while Rayllum still showing a preference for Ezranya. The other ships, however, seem to dislike both.

RPR: Round 4 results
About the event
Welcome back! This week - only a quick update on the results. We’ll start round 5 on Monday, July 27.
Alright! We had 86 participants last week, which, if I remember correctly, is the biggest number so far!
I haven’t updated the main tournament table yet, so I’ll give the results as a pie chart and as a tournament table with pictures, as well as images as usual.

I’m putting the regular pictures with ships, as well as my mini discussion under cut:
A quick discussion of the results:
1. I wasn’t sure who would win between Liren and Claudium and it’s fascinating that Claudium won by one vote only! As you can see - every vote counts! It’s a shame that Liren lost (it was the last Viren ship, after all), but I wish Claudium good luck next round - it’s going against Ezranya!
2. I’m not too surprised that Ezranya won, since it’s a very popular ship (arguably the most popular Ezran ship), but I didn’t expect such a big difference (21). Kaudia was another ship that I liked, so it was sad to see it go. In any case - I wish Ezranya good luck next round - it’s going against Claudium!
3. Here, the difference of the votes was also very surprising (29). Even though Corpeli is one of the most liked secondary ships (i.e. a ships people like, but don’t ship actively), Grenvus is also pretty popular. The tiny number of people who didn’t want to vote for either, however, shows that people who voted for one or the other most likely voted out of love for the respective ship. I wish Corpeli good luck next round - it’s going against Grazi!
4. This result was not surprising at all, seeing how Grazi is liked by many people and and Rugren is a very niche kind of ship. It’s sad to see Rugren go, but I wish Grazi good luck next round - it’s going against Corpeli!
5. Claravos never seizes to amaze me! It’s one of my favorite ships from those left in the competition and it managed to defeat a fairly popular ship - Sorgren - albeit by only 10 votes. I wish Claravos good luck next round - it’s going against Crowcos!
6. This match was very unexpected! Crowcos is a ship I added off the top of my head because I had spaces to fill and Raydia is a ship that has a stable fandom (albeit not very big). It’s also a fairly popular ship on ao3. It lost to Crowcos by mere 3 votes, but the 20 people who didn’t want to vote for either ship (plus the 5 people who skipped the question altogether), says that this match wasn’t a very popular one among most fans. Nonetheless, I wish Crowcos good luck next round - it’s going against Claravos!
7. According to my Shipping Poll, Soryx is the most popular Soren ship. However, Sabos has been liked by many fans at least ever since Sabah got a name (if not right after S3). It’s yet another example of a popular secondary ship beating a primary ship with a small following. In any case, I wish Sabos good luck next round - it’s going against Gremaya.
8. This result was not surprising at all, since we haven’t even seen Callum’s dad yet, and Gremaya has a stable fandom. Nonetheless, I still wish this ship good luck next round - it’s going against Sabos!

Welcome back to Rarepair Rumble! We are now in Round 4 and that means we are exactly halfway into the tournament. We have 16 ships left in the competition (or 8 competing pairs of ships).

I would once again like to take a week off. Sorry about that! >.< July 20-26 is the Reading Rush Readathon (an even where people read as many books as they can and complete challenges) and since I also have a job, I won't have time to update Rarepair Rumble. I'll try to publish the results on tumblr so you can at least know who won this round. Updating on all 6 of my social media platforms takes quite some time and I want to do it properly.
This means that Round 5 will most likely return on July 27. Round 5 is also the quarterfinal, so we'll only have 8 ships (or four pairs of ships) competing! Guys, we're getting close!
I'll try to finish Rarepair Rumble before September, because I will be moving house and I also want to start other events (as well as continue publishing results from the Shipping Poll - I still have some stuff I haven't published yet!).
Also, if you organize a TDP event of your own (a zine, a character or ship themed week, a poll of your own - anything were many people can be involved) - let me know. 1) I will happily promote your event and 2) I would like to put links to all TDP events in one place (most likely my tumblr) so that it's easier for the fandom to navigate.
A special thank you for those who answered the question about where they found the voting link - this information is very helpful to me as event organizer and it gives me some cool statistics.

Rarepair Rumble Round 2AB

Welcome back to Rarepair Rumble! We are finally entering round 2, which means 64 ships out of our initial 128 have left the competition.
Round 2 will be divided into two parts: 2AB and 2CD (the letters stand for different blocks of the tournament table).
The voting will go as usual with one alteration - I added a third voting option - “I don’t want to vote for either of these ships. A friend on on Discord pointed out that although you can skip the pairs you don’t care about or don’t like, the power of the binary choice makes it hard to skip them, getting the person stuck on making a choice. And it does make sense - I definitely feel that I want to make a choice whenever I’m presented with it, even if I don’t have an opinion on the subject matter.
The extra option also gives me some statistics on which ship pairs people don’t want to vote for.
Here’s an example of a ship pair with three possible answers:

You can see this round’s competing ships under cut. This time, there aren’t any ships I would consider problematic, however some of the ships have been the subject of heated debates.
The ships in question are Ruren (Runaan x Soren) and Calren (Callum x Soren). I don’t see these ships as problematic, but I respect people’s decision not to interact with them.
