the infamous 'last sighting of a barbary lion in the wild' photo taken by marcelin flandrin (1925) haunts me to my core. there's something so achingly poetic about it.

Classic Comic Villains: The Unnatural Selector
Pinup scan from TyrannoMax #21, Cocytus Comics, 1977
Born in a lost corner of the cosmos, the cosmic demigod known as the Unnatural Selector has but one driving concern: life and its propagation. For millions of years he has wandered the cosmos, transplanting populations and terraforming worlds to seed life in new corners of space and in his time-accelerated Genesis Engines, where he can study evolution in all its forms.
Part of this study is the "Tournament of Life," a cruel experiment where champions of a given world face a series of deadly trials and battles against disasters and the Selector's prized monstrosities. The biospheres of those that fail are scoured in a mass extinction event.
The Unnatural Selector was a regular foe of TyrannoMax, and showed up in several Cocytus Comics titles including Johannes Factotum: Professor of Practically Everything, True Life Tales of Science Fiction, and Barton's Mix-Ups!
-
A little sneak peek of a panel from an upcoming multi-page TyrannoMax comic I'm working on, reworked into a pinup. Bonus points if you can guess what the Selector is an anthro of (its not an animal, exactly.)
The Selector is a heavy edit, the main components of which are here.
As with most of my Tyrannomax stuff, the images are first composited, then reverted back to B&W lines, edited and inked, before being recolored from scratch.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I accidentally saved over the unedited background image, and Dall-E 3 is bad at archival.
I probably won't be going into this kind of detail on my process for the full pages, because this here is just one panel.
The Selector is a character concept I've had for awhile, this is just the first time I solidified a visual concept. A mysterious space god with a taste for trials and tournaments is a classic comic villain archetype, after all, and the evolution-obsessed villain fits nicely with dinosaur characters.
Might do a whole Coctyus Character Catalogue entry for him if the druthers hit me.
Prompts:
A cobra standing on a chunk of rock floating in in the cosmic void, it is reared up, threatening, facing toward the viewer, comic panel by jack kirby and john byrne, 1977, angled view
a cosmic nebula in the vague shape of a DNA double helix, comic inks by jack kirby, 1968, trippy, in the style of syd mead
A robed creature stands, one hand outstretched, palm up, toward the camera, he has a lion's head with a mane made of green flames, wearing cosmic-tech gauntlets, imposing, mysterious, foreboding, standing on a rock floating in the starry void, wide stance, standing tall, comic panel by jack kirby and wally wood, 1968, in the style of 1960s marvel comics, eerie cosmic coloration, wide angle, full body. The mood is dramatic.

Gonkoken nanoi Alarcón-Muñoz et al., 2023 (new genus and species)
Tumblr media
(Select bones and schematic skeletal of Gonkoken nanoi [scale bars = 50 mm for B–G, J, K–N, Q, S, and V–X, and 100 mm for H, I, O, P, R, T, and U], with preserved bones in white, from Alarcón-Muñoz et al., 2023)
Meaning of name: Gonkoken = duck/swan-like [in Tehuelche]; nanoi = for Mario “Nano” Ulloa [discoverer of dinosaur bones at the site where the original fossils were found]
Age: Late Cretaceous (Maastrichtian), between 70.5–71.7 million years ago
Where found: Dorotea Formation, Magallanes, Chile
How much is known: Numerous bones including parts of the skull, limbs, hips, and vertebral column. It is unknown whether any of these bones belonged to the same individuals, though at least three individuals are represented.
Notes: Gonkoken was a hadrosauroid, closely related to but not a member of the “core group” of duck-billed dinosaurs (hadrosaurids). All other hadrosauroids previously named from South America were true hadrosaurids. In fact, prior to the discovery of Gonkoken, non-hadrosaurid hadrosauroids near the end of the Cretaceous were not known from the Americas.
However, reexamination of supposed hadrosaurid fossils from Southern Patagonia and Antarctica suggests that these may also be remains of non-hadrosaurid hadrosauroids. It might have been that hadrosaurids (which probably originated in the Northern Hemisphere) never made it to the southern reaches of South America prior to the end-Cretaceous mass extinction, allowing other types of hadrosauroids to persist there in the absence of competition.

I had some thoughts about Bhaalspawn being classified as outsiders under 3.5e rules, rather than humanoids (or giants, dragons, fey, w/e), and my decision to interpret Bhaal's direct children as extraplannar, because it adds to the cult isolation thing (they were not born on this plane, they are tied to the Lower Planes, they don't belong and Bhaal is their only real connection, etc; I'm betting born on the Astral (because that's where Bhaal's dead flesh would be) with Gehenna counting as their native plane)
But also Durge technically does has Torilian ancestry in a way, even though Bhaal shed all mortality long before they were "born". Regardless of which of the two backstories we look at, Bhaal was High Netherese; Durge's only ancestral tie to Toril is a culture that's been extinct for over a thousand years. (also something-something Crown of Karsus: Netherese magic being a huge driving part of the villains' scheme)

Conulariids are an extinct group of probable cnidarians with 4-sided pyramidal thecae. They are relatively uncommon fossils but ranged from the Cambrian (possibly Ediacaran?) to the Triassic, comprising tens of genera and hundreds of described species (Lucas 2012).
Here are the reconstructed thecae of a small selection of species from every period of the conulariids' range, starting from the Cambrian in the top left and reaching all the way to the Triassic in the bottom right.
Since their soft parts are virtually never preserved (due to them being cnidarians and all that) (Van Iten & Südkamp 2010), most of our knowledge of conulariid biology and evolution is based on their more fossil-friendly thecae, which were composed of thin organophosphatic lamellae (Leme et al. 2008). Live conulariids were attached to the substrate by the apex of their theca; they probably captured suspended food particles or small prey using tentacles, just like other cnidarians, but it's hard to go in any more (non-speculative) detail without preserved soft tissues.

A lil theory I saw that I'm turning into headcanon
Since Jean is consistently regarded as the perfect phoenix host and is one of two people to achieve white phoenix status (the other being hope, we'll get to that), I'm making it so Jean is actually the origin of the phoenix force. Her being born and gaining her powers creates it but it doesn't fully manifest in her beyond the psychic raptor we typically see. It's something that exists in fragments throughout all of space-time which explains why Firehair in prehistoric times has access to it and why it's in every reality. It would also explain why it's drawn to individuals with significant telepathic prowess (i.e. nate grey, rachel, emma frost, etc.)
On the topic of Rachel being a phoenix host without going dark phoenix, I'll say that since Jean and the phoenix are one, Rachel's lack of heel turn is due to not just her own ability to control the power but the phoenix protecting Rachel from experiencing the same trauma Jean did as the host (especially considering Rachel's own trauma)
Pertaining to Hope, it's definitely a coincidence that a red-haired woman had a mutant baby (an apparently powerful one at that) at the time when mutantkind was on the verge of extinction and not only did this baby have phoenix host potential, but also wound up having the ability to activate and manipulate mutant powers. I say that Hope is a literal manifestation of the phoenix force created by Jean in the white hot room and sent to earth to be found by Cable. They time travel a bit, she grows up and fast forward to Utopia during AvX where we get into everything.
(This last bit kinda makes her even more of a plot device but w/e)

The last song | La última canción | A última canção
youtube
English
Moho braccatus, known as  ʻōʻō de Kaua was an endemic bird to the island of Kauaʻi officially extinct in the 20th century. Its extinction was a combination of several factors, such as mosquito-transmitted disease, introduction of mammalian predators such as the small Indian mongoose or Polynesian rat, and the destruction of its habitat, making the species more vulnerable to catastrophic weather events.
A male was last heard in 1987, the audio from this video. The images are from 1985, when he was last seen.
The silences between songs are meant for the female to fill with her  singing, since during the mating season they form a duet.
Dr. Christopher W. Clark : The last male of a species, singing for a female who will never come. And now his voice is gone.
Not only is the species extinct, but the whole genus was swiped away within the last male.

was hit w/ the mental image of lady sneasler hanging around exploring out in the wild with a little bag on her she carries around and inside are qna cards she hands out basically saying that yes shes a new pokemon, no you cant catch her shes a previously extinct species, also if you do anything sketchy she WILL attack you but only a little
(similar energy to pics of dogs in cars w/ a piece of paper saying to not break the window bc the ac is on and theyre listening to their tunes)
CRYNG FROM THIS MENTAL IMAGE
just giver her a shirt that says 'YES I KNOW IM EXTINCT YES I KNOW IM DA BOMB NO YOU CANT CATCH ME IM ALREADY CAUGHT' on the front with 'if found, don't worry, i can find my own way back to subway master ingo'
(ingo has a shirt that says 'i am subway master ingo. sneasler is strong independant snealser and will return when shes ready pls let her be for your own safety')
cdsl;dksdlfcksad;kfcasd
emmet makes her a bunch of hats, bags, baskets, w/e that all just have either really simple straight forward explanations OR really fucking bizarre statements about her status. she gets to pick which ever she wants to wear out that given day. poke-twitter has a lady sneasler bingo sheets and spotting games. like 'SHES WEARING THE INDEPENDENT LADY SHIRT TODAY' or 'lady spotted: she has the 'will bite' carrier bag!'
lady sneasler is meme-ing and somewhere, a sinnoh researcher is plotting world domination XD

Jack Headcanons!!!!
Thank you iminyourwalls2 for the suggestion btw-
Ok ok so-
Jack loves hanging out in the large trees surrounding the hotel (Imagine Redwoods but like half)
For god knows what reason he likes golden hour (The time of day that is Y E L L O W)
He likes collecting body parts from the other entities to study… He still really likes cryptids from when he was alive
This dumb ass molts and he turns really skinny and fleshy and wrinkled (Think baby owls mixed with a mole rat and Brian in that one episode of Family Guy where they shave him)
Jack can turn himself into any known non-extinct flying bird but the others will still be ravens, yes this means he can be a peacock.
Jack has severe depression and probably PTSD from being in both a gang and seeing his friends rotting corpses that one time.
TW SELF HARM I THINK?????!?!? He plucks his feathers when he’s stressed and this can lead to minor/major bleeding or scars(They do regenerate fairly quickly and it’s not often but hide always has to stop him or calm him down)
The last fact wasn’t just to be edgy is also because birds do that and he’s a bird :]
He likes eating rats and large bugs (Like roaches not Timothy)
He’s self conscious about his weird chicken feet that he has in his human shape
It’s all fun and games until Rush tries to hold him as a bird and squeezes a bit too hard-
He’s red on the inside! Almost all the other entities are black or black mixed with another colour
He drinks soy sauce instead of coffee because he’s a fucking idiot but also I think it’s by choice
Very shy about his emotions so much so that when he was alive if he told anyone about his girly popness he would probably have a heart attack
It took a lot of convincing from Hide while dead to get this man to admit that he’s into cock (Pun intended)
His favourite fruit is walnuts… That’s it.. He’s odd
If you were to touch him it would feel like the softest most comfortable and pillowy thing you have ever touched
He will never need a coat to go outside that’s what dawn is for 😎😎😎
Secretly this man is more kinky than Ambush just with a lot lower sex drive-
He loves to write, notes, letters, short books, basically anything. Along with that they’re arn’t many children’s books in the hotel so he had to write and illustrate all of the ones sally and timothy were every read :]
