So I still haven't done every romance route in iwatec, but there are certain ones that I find more compelling on a story level. Namely Dys, Marz, Sym, and Vace (toxic version. Hey I didn't say happy stories, just compelling). Rex, Nem, and Tammy I love so dearly and fully that I fully see them as my Sol's family. (And don't get it twisted, I still love Tang, Nomi, and Cal. Don't wanna leave them out just because they aren't in the former two categories.)

That said, there's just something about Sym's romance. It feels Correct. Natural. It breaks my heart when I can't pursue him for a route I want, in a way the others don't. I thought maybe it was just because I'm an alien fucker, but there's more to it than that. It's in the way his scenes differ from everyone else's.

On the surface gaining affection with Sym is the same. Go to the location he's in, get the points. But it feels so much more organic to find him outside the colony, as if honestly stumbling into Sym rather than hounding the area just for his company. And the fact that he doesn't take any gifts, it feels removed from the usual video game formula. Yet he still falls in love with you, no matter who this version of You is. I suppose you can technically woo anyone without pursuing a certain life path, but it feels like you should (if only to get extra scenes with them at the location they frequent). But if given the time to, Sym loves you no matter the path and no matter your hobbies. He simply loves YOU.

Which pairs so well with him being the only person who accepts your knowledge and dreams of other lives. You can tell Dys, but even then he still feels at the very edge of all those implications (and I don't see my Sol telling him more than the basics, wary to bare themselves when in so many worlds he's broken their heart). Sym knows you, Sym loves you, Sym is the one character who really feels like he understands the full scope of You and he is in awe. Every version. Every you.

Even when finding happiness with someone else, anyone else, it always feels like keeping a large part of yourself hidden and locked away.

But Sym can truly know Sol, the good and the bad and the complete transcendence of time.

...Do you guys think Sym would like ARGs? Cause I think he does. I think he spends hours on those things, I think he analyzes every single frame and text and audio recording he can get his hands on. Sym starts one up with Nomi and it runs for years.

(I personally have never really been invested in ARGs, I've been invested in Unfiction stuff before, my favorite being Diminish, but I've never found an ARG I've been really invested in. However I can't imagine Sym Not liking the mystery and puzzle solving involved in an ARG. It just feels right up his alley.)
