Flora and Son (2023) Review

Flora and Son - sounds like a name for a barber's or a chippy. "Chippy"....my-my, I'm becoming more British by the day!

Plot: Flora, a single mother who argues with her son Max in an attempt to find him a hobby, retrieves a guitar from a dumpster and discovers that one person's rubble can be a family's salvation.

John Carney's musicals aren't really musicals. Having brought us such treats as Sing Street and Begin Again, all his projects feature original songs, however, they are never flashy staged sequences, but instead very simplistic and calming moments. Carney uses music as a connective tissue between characters who otherwise struggle to click. So with his new Apple TV+ indie feature Flora and Son he sets the events in Dublin, Ireland, and its another feel-good heartwarming experience,. The best parts are the musical moments, with the song lyrics and acoustic guitar sounding delightful, however despite good intentions and solid moments, the film itself fails to fully hit the mark.

The thing with most John Carney movies is that they all feature flawed characters, with individuals going through some serious issues such as divorce or loss or being outcasted, however, that never stops these characters from being likable people whom we as the audience can root for and have that interest in seeing them get their happy ending. With Flora and Son, however, even though the story is structured in that same pattern, the characters are all really unlikeable and at times horrible. Flora (played by Ewe Hewson) is a terrible mother who rarely gives her son the time of day. She steals, is mean to everyone and overall just enjoys living her miserable life by feeling sorry for herself. We are supposed to wish good things for her character, but by acting so self-centered and unpleasant throughout most of the movie honestly made me not care for her. Only in the last 20 minutes, she makes the sudden decision to develop a consciousness, however, even then there isn't really any build-up in her character arc to get her to that stage. She just suddenly decides "Okay, I'm going to be nice now". The son too, though you do feel sorry that he's not got a solid parent figure, also is a bit of a prick, excuse my French. Weirdly it's the ex-boyfriend who we're supposed to hate, who actually comes off as the more reasonable one at times. Naturally, it doesn't help that he's played by Jack Reynor who is such a lovely man, so no matter how dislikable he tries to act I just see him as the sweet Irish-talking brother Brendan from Sing Street. In reality, the only character that seems to have a solid moral code and is actually a nice person is Flora's online guitar teacher (played by Joseph Gordon-Levitt), but again, that connects to the main musical moments of the film, which again are its stronghold.

The cinematography is fairly bland, with the only noteworthy moments being when Flora helps her son film a music video, which results in a very amusing piece. The narrative itself is standard cheesiness which is to be expected in a romantic comedy drama such as this, but the storyline is pretty basic and more tame than usual compared to Carney's previous works. Again, within the last 20 minutes, it does come all together nicely even if the ending itself is a tad anti-climactic, but overall it is a well-intentioned little indie flick, with a great acoustic soundtrack, and enough heartwarming moments to make it worth a Saturday night watch with your partner.

Netflix Announces SANTA CLARITA DIET Season 2 Release Date

Immediately after Netflix dropped the second season teaser-trailer for Santa Clarita Diet, fans have been hungry to learn when new episodes of the horror sitcom would be available to binge. Well, the time has come: Netflix released word via Twitter that the second season of the cult, horror-comedy will be available to stream on Friday, March 23rd.

The first season of Santa Clarita Diet introduces Joel and Sheila Hammond (Timothy Olyphant, Drew Barrymore) as two realtors who live a humdrum life with their teenage daughter, Abby (Liv Hewson), in the Santa Clarita suburbs of California. After contracting an unknown virus, Sheila develops an appetite for human flesh and begins murdering her neighbors to satisfy her hunger. The Hammond family is forced to navigate Sheila’s newly undead identity, while attempting to maintain some semblance of normalcy.

  In an exclusive, EW revealed that season 2 will focus on the Hammond’s attempting to find a cure for Sheila’s affliction, while desperately trying to cover up the growing number of missing people from their small community.

Season 2 boasts a number of notable guest stars, including Joel McHale (Community, Talk Soup), Maggie Lawson (Psych, The Ranch), Gerald McRaney (Deadwood, Mike & Molly), and Zachary Knighton (The Hitcher, Happy Endings). McHale and Lawson play Chris and Christa, competitive realtors looking to dethrone the Hammond’s. McRaney will portray a retired army colonel named Ed Thune.

Santa Clarita Diet’s first season debuted on February 3rd of last year. In spite of mixed reviews, the series was renewed by Netflix less than two months after its initial release. Series creator, Victor Fresco produces alongside Drew Barrymore’s production company, Flower Films.

Season one of Santa Clarita Diet is available on Netflix, now, so be sure to prep for season two by catching up! And don’t forget: The Family That Slays Together, Stays Together.

'Robin Hood': Primeras imágenes de Taron Egerton como el famoso héroe en el 'reboot'. Este proximo 21 de septiembre de 2018, Taron Egerton estrenará un rol menos elegante pero igual de heroico -al menos en la estadounidense- el nuevo 'reboot' de Robin Hood con Otto Bathurst (Black Mirror, Peaky Blinders) a la cabeza. Este viernes, Entertainment Weekly ha publicado tres nuevas imágenes de la película con Egerton de protagonista junto a Jamie Foxx en el papel de Little John y Eve Hewson como Marian. "Me contactaron poco después del estreno de la primera película de Kingsman, y mi respuesta inicial fue, siendo totalmente honesto, fue un '¿por qué?' Pero el director Otto Bathurst me explicó que querían narra la historia desde un nuevo punto de vista, algo que no se puede unir solo a un universo medieval", ha explicado el protagonista en este encuentro con EW. Cabe señalar que el actor ya ha prometido con anterioridad que esta será una historia divertida y oscura, al mismo tiempo que asegura que será una visión de los orígenes del personaje mucho más moderna que en anteriores ocasiones. "Lo que me emocionó de trabajar con Otto Bathurst es lo que hizo en Peaky Blinders... un drama histórico pero con modernidad. Un sentimiento contemporáneo de algo que ocurre en el pasado que es relevante hoy en día".

Marian; još jedan film o legendi o Robinu Hoodu

I dok upravo traje snimanje filma “Robin Hood: Origins”, u režiji Otta Bathursta i produkciji tvrtke Lionsgate, magazin The Hollywood Report upravo je objavio vijest o filmu “Marian”, najnovijem filmu koji će se temeljiti na legendi o slavnom Robinu Hoodu.

Naime, film “Marian” snimat će se prema scenarijau Petea Barrya, a bit će to produkt Sony Pictures studija. Radnja filma temeljila bi se na legendi o Robinu Hoodu, točnije na događajima koji su se zbili neposredno nakon njegove smrti te borbu za šefa Merry Men grupe koja i dalje nastavlja pljačkati bogate dijeleći plijen siromašnima. U središtu radnje naći će se i ženski lik, djeva Marian, koju će utjeloviti popularna glumica Margot Robbie. Osim glavne uloge, Robbie se navodi i kao jedna od producentica uz Donalda De Linea i Amy Pascale. Margot Robbie, producentski posao bi obavljala u ime svoje tvrtke LuckyChap Entertainment.

��ini se da nas u skoro vrijeme očekuju čak dva velika filmska projekta posvećena legendi o Robinu Hoodu, pa ćemo uz Jamie Foxxa, Tarona Egertona, Jamiea Dornana i Ewe Hewson, u filmu “Robin Hood: Origins” gledati i Margot Robbie u filmu “Marian”, u liku istoimene djeve. Zanimljivo je da će u filmu “Robin Hood: Origins”, Ewe Hewson glumiti Marian, središnji lik najnovijeg filma Margot Robbie, pa vjerujemo da će biti zanimljivo vidjeti te dvije interpretacije u tako kratkom vremenskom odmaku.
