Since the engagement party, a video taken by one of the guests has gone viral, leading to Cristina to become the subject of death threats.

In a letter to the director of the Zona Bianca TV news programme, Christina said Massimo had committed an act of 'psychological violence' and had 'meticulously planned his revenge'.

She added that she had a valuable sapphire ring given to her by Massimo's mother to mark their engagement which had 'mysteriously disappeared' 15 days before the party.

Speaking to the Times, Cristina's adviser said she will be taking legal action for 'reputational damage' against he former fiance.  

'She has suffered very serious attacks on social media and threats from Italian citizens. It has been traumatic,' she said.

Her lawyer,  Claudio Strata, added the banker had 'intentionally humiliated her'.    

'The letter was read out in front of dozens of people and it was captured in a video that was sent to the newspapers. We don't think this was improvised.' 

Massimo categorically denies having published the video, let alone having allowed it to be filmed.

He has since accused Cristina of stealing €700,00 (£598,000) from the couple's joint account, but she says the money was transferred with his consent before the relationship ended. 

Cristina snapped back after the event in an interview with La Stampa.

She said that the bags for Mykonos 'were already packed' and urged onlookers to reserve judgement: 'Within every family, the dynamics are very complex and difficult to understand from the outside.'

She said at the time she thought: 'He's gone crazy'.

'He was very tired at the time,' she said.

She also noted: 'The work stands and I can't afford to lose it.'

'My professional life requires me to react and remain lucid. I will think about possible protections in civil and criminal matters.' 

Cristina  summed up: 'It was a farce, let's face it. Serious things are resolved another way.'

'Now I will consider whether to sue him,' she said.

Viviana Ferrero, former vice president of the Turin city council and friend of Cristina , described the put-down as a 'sexist lynching'.

She said: 'Two things hurt me, the end of a beautiful love story and the lynching in which Cristina it's been going on for days. A sexist, chauvinist, violent, horrendous lynching.

She went on: 'Dirty laundry is washed in the family and they, even if for a short time, were a very special family. 

'And they could have been one of the most beautiful couples there were, because they combined so many qualities.

Massimo's mother, Franca Bruna Segre, was also known as a key figure in Italian finance, at the top of Banca Intermobiliare before her son became its financier. 

The 64-year-old is also a director of Directa Sim, a company dealing in online trading, and has involvement in other sectors including health and media.

Complicating matters, Cristina is professionally tied into some of these businesses, listed on LinkedIn as a director of Directa Sim since February.

She also has been named CEO of Savio Thesan Spa, a company she joined by taking over his shares through the recently established Hope SRL. 

Cristina is the daughter of a renowned accountant from Turin and has held roles in politics and business over an eventful career.

In 2021, she backed the mayoral campaign of centre-right candidate Paolo Damilano in Turin, who promised to make her deputy if he won.

Damilano lost in the run-off to centre-left candidate Stefano Lo Russo, and as a candidate for councillor Cristina was able to collect only 318 'preferences'.

Segre and Cristina met around the time of the pandemic but had their wedding delayed twice as a result.

Chapter One: The Start

You relaxed into your sun lounger as you soaked in the Greek sun. The summer break was always something that you looked forward to. As much as you loved watching the racing, it was nice being able to spend some quality time with your friends. You had been friends with Arthur for as long as you could remember. Your mums had been friends since they met at university and their annual girly holidays had continued, even once they’d had kids.

As a child you spent the school year waiting to reunite with your best friends. As you grew up you'd seen them more regularly, college was more flexible and race weekends became a frequent event in your calendar. You thought that after leaving college to attend uni part-time alongside a flexible job would allow you to travel even more, but covid had other plans for you. That was one of the reasons you were so grateful to finally get away.

For months you and Arthur had talked about jetting off to somewhere hot after not having seen each other since Christmas. To say you'd missed him was an understatement. He’d invited you to a villa he and his friends were renting for the week in Mykonos and the second restrictions began to ease in England you had called him to arrange your flight out. 

You and Arthur had always been the closest out of the group, both in terms of age and friendship. The two eldest Leclerc brothers were considered to be part of the 'older kid' group. You weren't sure how and when the group divisions had started and where the lines were drawn, but you and Arthur was always among those that had to sit on the smallest chairs on the smaller table.

It had never bothered either of you much, you were usually just glad to be within each other’s company. Your closeness was something you were both often teased for, especially when his career in racing progressed and he increasingly entered the limelight. Neither of you had ever really understood it, the bond you shared was that of a brother and sister. The thought of overstepping that boundary had never even crossed your mind, let alone been considered.

Your reminiscent daydream was interrupted by the growl of an engine and your head snapped towards the driveway. The sight of the red Ferrari was enough to put a frown on your face, it wasn’t hard to guess who was driving it.

“I thought Charles was flying out next week?” you looked at Arthur who was laying on the sun lounger next to you, squinting over the top of your sunglasses.

“He managed to get some extra time off so decided to come out earlier,” Arthur casually mentioned. Your relationship with Charles was very different to that with Arthur. There was always something about Charles that you had found enticing. The similarities that everyone saw between Arthur and Charles weren't as obvious to you. You put it down to knowing them better than most people but deep down you knew that wasn’t the case.

You shouldn’t have felt nervous, you’d seen him a hundred times before, but ever since the last time you saw him there was this uncertainty of how our next encounter would go. 

“He said you bumped into him in London, at a pub or something.” Your eyes rolled as Arthur spoke. It was like he could read your mind.

"Yeah me and my friends briefly bumped into him at some bar, I can't remember which one. He was with some friends; Pierre was there too." 

The majority of that sentence was a lie, although it did portray elements of the truth. It hadn't been brief at all and you knew exactly which bar you were in when you'd bumped into Charles and Pierre, in fact you could probably retrace the night step for step. However, since Arthurs description of the encounter was so vague, you didn't want to add in any details that Charles had clearly failed to include.

“Pierre’s flying out tomorrow.” 

“That will be nice,” you twisted the bracelet on your wrist round in circles as you gazed over to the driveway. It was a habit you’d picked up to distract you from your nervousness. “I suppose we should go and say hello.”

“Do you think he’ll let me drive his Ferrari?” Ollie asked as you all picked yourselves up from your sun beds and made your way towards the drive.

“As if he’d let anyone else drive it.” Oscar scoffed.

“He won’t even let me drive it.” Arthur added. “I only wanted to drive to the shop but nooooo.” 

“Do you really think Charles would put his Ferrari in the hands of teenage racing drivers? With the lack of fear you guys have I don’t think I’d even let you drive my car!” You had a point. 

“If anyone deserves it, it’s me.” Dennis threw his hands up in a ‘just saying’ type fashion which earned a chuckle from the group.

“Am I already missing something?” Charles asked as you approached his car. He was midway through closing the door when he spoke.

“Out of all of us, who would you let drive your car?” Ollie’s question had caught him off guard as his gaze quickly flickered to you, offering you a signature smile which you returned before looking back at your hands.

“Probably Carla,” Charles brought her in for a hug. “She seems the safest”. Carla was Arthur’s girlfriend. You’d spent hours on facetime to her over the past few months, getting to know her as best you could with covid restrictions in place. You adored her, not only did she make your best friend incredibly happy to the point you almost cringed, but she was also the most genuine person you could’ve met. Her understanding of yours and Arthur’s friendship was beyond appreciated. Most girls usually heard about it and left. “That’s not fair!” Arthur protested.

“Maybe you’ll all have your own one day,” Charles suggested as he gave everyone a fist bump until he reached you. “But for now, you can stick to those!” He pointed in the direction of the various cars littered about the driveway. 

“Ma douce,” Charles whispered into your ear as he gave you a hug. Your French was nowhere near perfect, only being able to pick things up from what you’d learnt at school or when the boys repeated certain phrases frequently. Charles allocated you a different nickname every time you spoke to him and, despite not always knowing what it meant, the terms were always comforting to you.

“Hello Charles,” You felt his smile against your head as you addressed him. To most people his name probably sounded very basic coming from your mouth in a monotone, British accent. Despite how amazing they sounded in your head before the words left your lips, accents had never been your forte. Usually he preferred when people but in some effort to its pronunciation but when it came to you, he didn’t mind.

You were relived that the atmosphere wasn’t awkward between you both. Since you’d last seen him you had tried everything in your power to not think about the Monegasque standing in front of you. Scared of the ‘what ifs’ and ‘maybes’ you mind had the power of creating you had opted to distract yourself with other activities. You’d done a superb job of leaving the night in the past, despite flashbacks reigniting within you every so often trying to through you off course, and you couldn’t help but feel proud of how well you’d handled the situation. But as you felt yourself relaxing in his arms, breathing in his scent, you couldn’t help your eyelids from fluttering shut and rather than refraining from thinking of Charles, you allowed yourself a quick moment of reflection to the night you’d shared back in London.

The streets of London weren’t majorly busy, yet they were the busiest they’d been in months. Lucy was great at chatting up men, which is why when she dismissed herself to go up to the bar with a cheeky grin on her face you knew it wouldn’t be long until she returned with a fresh drink in her hand. 

“Has she found anyone?” you asked Natalie who sat opposite you. You had your back to the bar and couldn’t see how she was getting on.

“Of course she has!” Nat replied as if it was a given.

“If we have to spend the rest of the evening with him, I hope he’d nice to look at,” Katie admitted from beside you. “And preferably not boring.”

“Well lets hope so because they’re on their way over!” Nat began smiling from ear to ear ready to introduce herself to the new individual. Lucy spoke to a waiter on her way over who quickly grabbed not one but two spare chairs from an existing parties table and placed them at either end of your table of four.
