The bottles swam in front of Karo’s vision as she tried to focus on the Doman Prince across the table from her. This was probably not a wise choice the night before battle, but, she had needed to unwind, and for once felt safe enough to do so in the company she was with.

A long blink later, and she realized she was being carried to her bedroll in the corner near the twins. Hien pressed a kiss to her forehead as he tucked the blanket around her, pointedly leaving a glass of water just within arms reach–but not close enough to spill if she flailed in her sleep. Curling onto her side, his watchful smile was the last thing she remembered before dawn.

The warm water was a very welcome and pleasant change from the chilly air of Sharylan, and Karo couldn’t get enough. The fact that it was completely private and isolated away from all responsibilities was a boon, and the overwhelming thought that all this land was hers, well, that was a thought for another day. There had been enough guilt for pushing and pulling everyone on the Star as far as she had–yes to save literally everyone–but it didn’t make the flexing of that power feel any better. Getting rewarded for it in this fashion was–a little unsettling–yet the benefits were starting to wear down at her frugal mind.

“You, my dear, are not supposed to be thinking that hard right now,” the words were spoken after strong arms bore her to the surface of the water, wrapping around her and lazily keeping them both afloat. An affectionate kiss was nuzzled into her neck by Thancred, as she belatedly realized that her lack of paying attention had led to her quietly slipping underwater while she was thinking. Not that this was a problem with the blessing of the kami, however, it was a tad embarrassing.

G’raha glided over to where they were floating, butting heads gently with her, and kissing Thancred on the cheek. They both had of course come with her when Tataru had dropped her off on the island initially, seeing as she was still technically recovering. This was a last little adventure for the three of them before having to buckle down on more serious work–Thancred going exploring with the ever patient Urianger, and G’raha starting to take up full time duties with the Students of Baldesion once more.

For now though, it was time to enjoy the sun, and her loves–so that was what she planned to do.

Amethyst eyes popped open as Ikarus leaned over her friend and lover, a good-natured scowl crossing her face.

“That sight of yours makes it very hard to surprise you, did you know?” Closing the gap, she finished the motion, kissing him as he chuckled.

“Sorry, little bird,” gracefully, she sank the rest of the way to the ground next to Hythlodaeus, curling up around him as he wrapped an arm around her. It had taken her longer than she liked to admit to find him, hidden away in a favorite clearing in the part near his office. Said office was of course the first place she looked, it being one of his working days, but she found the room empty besides abandoned concepts, yet to be reviewed.

She wasn’t supposed to be in Amaurot currently, as she was assigned to a task half the star away to survey the farms there. The rest of her friends and compatriots in the field were scattered for the time being, busy with their own missions, so she had been alone.

And alone was not how she wanted to be this night–for it was night where she had teleported from, bleary-eyed, and desiring comfort. It was a silly thing to feel so lonely when she was so respected and cared for when out in the world–yet here she was. Desiring someone to call her Ikarus again, not Azem.

When she awoke, Hyth had already slipped away, most likely to return to his daily duties, however, she wasn't alone. Emet-Selch, Hades, sat a few feet away, guarding her while she slept, oblivious to the world around her. How like Hythlodaeus to get one lover to watch the other. Her co-worker was reading, his own reports it looked like, so still not off the clock despite being dragged away from his desk.

Rolling over, Kar'a crawled the few feet to his side, peeking over his shoulder as he scowled at her–not as fiercely as he used to, but still at least pretending to be annoyed.

"Thank you," she leaned her head on his shoulder for a moment as he sighed with great exaggeration.

"Thank your partner in mischief," he turned back to his work as she chuckled.

"Ah, but you did come when he asked, so my thanks shall go to you," her childhood friend sighed again as her spirits rose. Moving quickly, she pressed a kiss to his cheek before he could jerk away, teleporting away immediately after. As the park disappeared around her, she could see him turn to watch her, expression softening to an exasperated fond smile.

Thinking about thancred at 5am I guess

#owen plays ffxiv #i love the characters arcs for so many of the ffxiv characters but #Thancred’s is I just think he’s neat territory #he’s introduced as the whole flirty subterfuge sort of character with a touch of womanizer. guy likes things in life and there’s this #not quite smug but he’s a guy who knows himself #but you get more into things and you uncover his relationship with Minfilia and his kinship with her and the duty he feels towards her #but you know from the start that there’s a reason why he’s with the scions. why he has the neck tattoos #please don’t make look them up along w the twins grandfather’s name #but he was chosen for a reason and I dare say that thancred as a character is one especially shaped by those around him #being a kid growing up on nothing and being taken in by all these people. these pseudo family units over his life #he’s got this strong sense of duty towards Minfilia and Louis something don’t make me say it #especially towards Minfilia who he had something of a hand in raising her #as a way to repay her losing her family (by his own perceived lack of being able to stop the tradegy from occurring)#if there’s one of several things I wanted more out of ARR in retrospect it’s more fleshing out the two of them #which we do kinda get right at the end of the warriors of darkness bit and later in ShB #definitely in ShB #which that expac takes what we know of thancred and turns it into….all that happens l #his complex relationship with ryne. his difficulties with coming to terms with minifilia’s fate in front of him through ryne #who is very much her own character and her responses to thancred #his hesistancy and closed off tendencies in the face of loss #her perception of his dislike of her because she isn’t ‘his Minfilia’ and the conversation he had with the real Minfilia in Arang #she just others herself so much. distances herself so much from her existence. comparing herself to the real Minfilia #the whole of her saying the real Minfilia is just. YEAH #no doubt her life is much better with thancred but there’s such this back and forth #going on with him in his perception of her and his own inability to let go of the past #those feelings of how he didn’t do enough for minifilia. the letting her down the feeling like he didn’t do enough for her l #him and ryne are so….gosh they’re so wonderful #thancred is such a nice character with how he’s…steeped in having/benefiting from someone to Follow #someone to care for. someone to protect which feels so natural looking at his life #it’s all through the lens of duty but never resentful duty

I think the time mismatch between you and your bros in ShB is such a good idea for character drama

#spoilers #major spoilers #you know how in stories there's always this whole loss of innocence angle with the whole 'you can't go back home again' adage #the whole idea that you can return to a place you knew intimately and find it utterly alien bc it's changed in the years you were gone #and you can never go back to that memory of what it was?#yeah. I mean 3/4s of the Scions have been here for (by their perspective) actual years. for the WoL it's been weeks at most #Joranir blinked and people grew up without them. Thancred literally (accidentally but still) disassociated so hard from the stress that he gave up his body to the bad guy for a bit. If anyone gets what youre going through, its probably going to be him. Hes not going to waste his time on empty platitudes: hes going to get you a glass of water, a warm blanket, and a hot meal, and let you cry it out on his shoulder for as long as you need to.

(And if that still doesnt help, well. Sex is still on the table. Its rarely a good idea, but hes all out of those.)

Urianger is probably breaking down with you lets be real. Every future my mans has ever read has included world-ending catastrophe, and, sure, youve thwarted it every time (usually with his help) but. What if this time you dont? What if this time you fail???? Its an unreasonable amount of stress for one man to be carrying. He probably does a fantastic amount of fantasy weed to cope and still all it takes is seeing you break down for him to also start blubber-crying.

Graha seems kind of detached and distant at first. "Shower water food" he commands you, in the voice of Lynas grandfather the Crystal Exarch, firm and uncompromising and impossible to disobey, and you might miss the way his voice and smile are strained. The way his hands clench and unclench at his sides. Hes never regretted turning back time to help you save two worlds, but. Its times like this that he wonders if he shouldnt try again to give you a happier ending.

Estinien is a firm hand on your shoulder, a steady shoulder to lean on, because he gets it. The feeling of being trapped in your own body, puppetted by powers so much greater than you can imagine, almost greater than you can comprehend... Youre breaking down for the both of you, honestly, because hes spent so long training the iron discipline to resist nidhoggs influence that he doesnt know how to anymore. This is. Cathartic. For the both of you tbh.

Aymeric wishes in this moment, more than anything, that he could just. Just be with you. Out on your journeys, giving you support by your side instead of from a distance. And he knows, he knows, that the support he gives you is important, that his ability to move nations in your favor has helped far more than any single sword at your side ever would. But he bears the weight of a nation while you bear the weight of a star, and that just. Doesnt seem fair to him.

Haurchefant knows that theres some things that hot chocolate cant fix but. Its a good starting place if nothing else. Something warm and sweet right now couldnt hurt, neither would a soft blanket and a roaring fire. He'll sit with you, bundled up together, and just listen if thats what you need. Or he can talk-- he has plenty of embarrassing stories about Artoirel that he hasnt shared yet. Either way, he'll happily help you wipe your tears away when youre done, and then drop a delicate kiss on your forehead.

Stand tall, he says. A smile better suits a hero.

Sidurgu is surprisingly good at this. Or, maybe not so surprising? Rielle is very mature for her age, but shes still a child. He probably does this whole song and dance every other week. And you feel a little bit like a child, the way he bullies you into the shower and then bundles you up in blankets and pushes food at you, but. Beneath the gruff words and scowl you can tell hes worried. Frustrated. This is exactly the kind of injustice that as a dark knight he swore he would fight, but hes just one man, there isnt much he can do about the desolation of the star. But he also needs you to know that he'll always be in your corner. Whether in this little way or if you need him to help you kill a god, he'll always come when you call.

BONUS

Ardbert has never felt so helpless in his life. He cant touch you, cant be a shoulder you can cry on. He cant even fetch you a glass of water. All he can do is stand there and watch as you break apart in your bed in the Pendants, and its. Its torture, worse than anything any ascian could ever conceive.

Still. He does what he can. And if all he can do is sit at your bedside, his hand hovering half-through yours in a mockery of touch while he tells you stories of his adventures, or friendship and triumph and happier times, well. Its the least he can do.

On the one hand, I definitely get the perspective some people take of "the actual adults involved let Alphinaud down" in regards to the Crystal Braves, but I don't like it because it feels like it's trying to minimize Alphinaud's wrongdoing or absolve him of responsibility, and it's kind of insulting to treat him like he's well, a stupid kid that was in over his head.

Like don't get me wrong, he was up to his ears in the politics of Ul'dah and that's definitely a lot to put on anyone, especially someone as young and inexperienced as him, but the reason he was able to get into that situation at all is because, for the purposes of the story, Alphinaud is an adult. Like I see all the time the sentiment "why is this teenager allowed to do all this" and the answer is that in the setting, that's old enough to have independence and make important decisions! As far as everyone else in the setting is concerned, Alphinaud's a grown man that is just as qualified as anyone else to be doing the things he does! If he was just a loud mouthed kid, he wouldn't have the ear of Eorzea's military leaders or the Scions.

Whether you agree or not with the narrative decision to have 16 be the age of adulthood aside, the point is that Alphinaud should have known better. He is genuinely very smart, he knows politics and strategy, he SHOULD have anticipated his enemies trying to sabotage his plans. The Crystal Braves happened not because Alphinaud was ignorant, but because Alphinaud was arrogant. There WERE people telling him something was fishy, Riol was looking into it, the Monetarists' investments were brought to his attention, but Alphinaud didn't do anything about it because he was convinced he was invincible. He believed that if anyone tried anything, his troops were fanatically loyal to him and his enemies couldn't touch him. He had it in his head that he had solved the Primal Problem and created the weapon that would enforce Eorzea's peace forever, and he convinced himself that the Warrior of Light was his personal attack dog that would be there to kill anyone that got in his way. And worst of all is that no one could dispute this! His agents found a Garlean spy in the Immortal Flames, his personal action found Cid, saved the Scions, and turned the tide against the XIVth Legion. It would not have mattered if everyone around him was warning him about the coup, he wouldn't have believed it. The reason it hits him so hard is that he was so deep in his own ego as the savior of Eorzea that he started ignoring the corruption around him, and forgetting that his decisions affected the lives of dozens if not hundreds of people.

Taking that responsibility away from him to blame Thancred or Y'shtola or Minfilia or whoever just because they're older than him does a disservice to his character and the story of XIV as a whole.

Okay but I do need to talk about Edda.

I've been obsessed with her ever since my first run of Tam-Tara Deepcroft. Not hard mode. She's been living in my brain rent free since the very first time I saw the cutscenes with her after doing the level 16 normal mode dungeon.

She's like this strange allegory for the burden of responsibility. In my opinion at least.

Edda was the groups healer. A conjurer who, outside of using her magic, was seemingly also responsible for gathering adventuring supplies for her party members as well re: dialogue outside of Sastasha.

Averre mocks her for not using her own money to pay for more healing potions, but it's only mentioned that *he* gave her gil to begin with. Not Payo-Rayo, not Liavinne.

Just Averre. After which the burden immediately falls on Edda to use her personal funds for the group supplies. She is expected to forfeit anything she way want or need, because she's the healer. It's her job to heal them and provide for them right?

Even when Averre dies, and it was clear that it was entirely his own fault for rushing ahead of the group and out of Edda's spell range, Liavinne chooses to blame Edda.

It was her responsibility. It was her job to help them and heal them and she failed.

Her group abandons her.

And the WOL watches. Unable to help her.

I think it's perfectly reasonable to view her as a warning or an omen for the WOL of what they fear could happen if they fail the expectation of those around them. If they can't do their job right people will die, and it will be their fault. They're the WOL. It's their job to save everyone. To put themselves on the line and bear the burden of it all.

Tam-Tara Deepcroft (Hard) is the omen of what happens when you let guilt and grief consume you. When you can't let the past go. When you'd do anything for the person you love regardless of how good they were to you in life.

Edda is blinded by love, and guilt for letting Averre die. She sacrifices so much to try and bring him back and doesn't even care when she gets a voidsent monstrosity instead. That's still Averre to her.

This comes after you lose a lot of the scions, most importantly Noraxia, to Livia's raid. Where you almost lose Thancred to Lahabreaha. Depending on when you choose to unlock the dungeon as well, you may have lost Moonbryda, or G'raha Tia, or watched the twins lose their grandfather again.

The WOL is riddled with loss. Loss they blame themselves for.

Because they're the Warrior of LIGHT. It's their job to save people.

The idea that Edda serves as this massive warning sign for what the WOL could easily become if they didn't have the support surrounding them is fascinating to me.

Especially when Palace of the Dead throws at you special encounters with past foes. And again Edda herself. Someone who failed her role. Who you couldn't save. Who you didn't save.

She prepares the WOL for all of the loss ahead of them. Makes them aware of what is at stake if they fail. At the point you meet her you're still just an adventure. Sure you've done a few big things for the city you started in but your fame and standing are still subjecting to your future efforts. Your still vulnerable. Still just an adventure like Edda and Averre were.

You could have ended up just like she did.

On Minfilia

When you take Minfilia at face value, she’s honestly a good character. And her writing is consistent enough that I can’t completely say that the way the community reacted to her was due to it but at the same time... it kinda is, in my opinion, and most of the arguments given to “hate on her” by people are mis-attributed griefs with the storytelling itself or the gameplay.

(The way some choose to mis-attribute it speak more of those people than of the story or devs, though.)

To me, Minfilia is a just and kind woman, if a bit politically naive, who tries her hardest to fill in the shoes of Louisoix when it’s very much not what she signed up for in creating the Path of the Twelve. It’s a hell of a role to take on at 22 (time of the Calamity, since she’s 27 in ARR) and she did an admirable job with it. You can understand why those who’ve known her for a long time feel like she’s incredible, given the facts.

But if you’re not a Legacy player, you don’t know those stakes, you don’t know her, and she doesn’t know your character either (she recognizes Legacy WoLs from what I've gathered).

So your actual introduction to Minfilia goes like this: you get told by Momodi that a secret organization is interested in hiring you and to go to Vesper Bay. You go there and speak to Tataru.

A summary in two screenshots:

The named Scion depends on where you started: Thancred for Ul'dah, Y'shtola for Limsa, Yda and Papalymo for Gridania. It's not Minfilia who recruits you, it's them. She just gets to make it official because she's the boss and got the last word.

And not only that but you've traveled to the town, then get to pass three doors (and two loading screens) in total before meeting her: to enter the building, to go to the basement and, finally, to enter her office where she's talking to the main Scions.

Which seems entirely trivial but I feel like it create a pre-existing distance before you even get to meet Minfilia.

In the Solar, she introduces herself, then immediately puts some distance between you and her by walking behind her desk—ironically while telling you that you're amongst friends—and starts her speech about the Scions, the Echo, the Primals and the fact that your Echo is especially strong. A speech she ends with this (notice the crossed arms—distance, again):

The next cutscene is about the perks of the job, settling once and for all that your relationship with her, even though she calls you friend, is transactional and hierarchical.

Which is fine, I'm not complaining. But she's our boss, which sets her apart from every other character in the story, Scions included.

The next hours are literally spent executing her orders, going back and forth between Vesper Bay and wherever she sends you (and we didn't have the aetheryte tickets until patch 5.3) until she gets abducted.

We meet quite a lot of NPCs who tell us that she's a great diplomat (something we didn't get to see so far since she doesn't accompany us on our diplomatic mission to talk to the Sylphs about Ramuh) and talented to bring people together (which is probably true but always happens off screen). We don't get to see it until well after they made her go from our boss to a damsel in distress we need to save.

To quote Erenville: first impressions last.

Especially when the story doesn't give you opportunities to change it for hours of gaming time.

She's not as passive as people tend to remember, but they botched her introduction to non-legacy players, in my opinion.

So I can't say it's entirely fair to pretend there's no reason to dislike her, or at least to not care much about her. There are other characters who play a similar role to her up to a point: the Exarch for example. But the Exarch goes, literally, outside to meet with us. We get to see him deal with Ranjit and the threat of Eulmore. By the time he needs saving, we've seen what he can do, even discounting his help in the first dungeon. I don't think he would have received such a warm reception if he'd just been waiting for us passively in the Ocular for the first half of Shadowbringers.

It's worth mentioning that the writers were working on the 1.X patches at the same time they were writing ARR, though. And to me, it feels like they either forgot or didn't care that new players wouldn't have a pre-existing rapport with Minfilia.

After all, Louisoix tells her in one of the short stories to wait for "one who bears the light". When we meet her in the Solar, we doom her: her role was to serve as a bridge between 1.0 and 2.0. To wait for us.

And we're here now.

(I don't think they meant to keep her around, even without the general disliking of her that players had—and that's probably why the twins were here from the start.)

the character development of so many ffxiv characters mean so much to me :((
