Ok but wasn’t the whole bespin luke vs Vader duel the REASON leia, lando, chewie, and the droids could escape? So is au a fusion? Like SW characters are Tolkienized or the other way around?

Yeah, the characters from Lord of the Rings are dropped into a Tolkien-ified version of the Star Wars universe. Aside from a few cases like the Thrawn(Kreia?)/Witch King idea that I posted before, there aren't many straight-up character mash-ups, and even in the case of Thrawn it's more about merging the characters' roles and styles into one than actually blending the characters.

The only other straight-up Combined Character that I've come up with so far is Elrond effectively being either Bail or Breha Organa. Here's thoughts from the unhinged bedtime typing:

Elrond: Bail Organa basically. Elrond, Senator of Alderaan, whose capital city is named Imladris and lies in a valley surrounded by rivers, so it's often nicknamed Rivendell by the locals; it's a peaceful planet that is secretly helping to fund and run the rebellion. His wife and three kids are in on it too (and the twins definitely take advantage of the fact that they look alike in order to alibi each other and generally just cause shit that the Empire has to deal with a la that post about Bail's ships "getting stolen, guess the Empire needs to reimburse me now!" and pre-ANH Leia being…well, Leia, lmao and just basically using her diplomatic status to Be A Shit), and Arwen and Aragorn totally are in love but cannot be together unless the Empire is destroyed and the Jedi can stop being hunted because she won't abandon the Rebellion and he won't turn his back on the Order so they can't just run off together; the only way they can be together in more than secret stolen snatches is after a complete victory. (Or if Alderaan gets exposed for the shit it's pulling and the Alderaanian leadership manages to survive and go on the run, of course. But that's not exactly the result any of them are hoping for.) Maybe when he was younger Elrond used to go on sort of "Space Doctor Without Borders" missions to help in war zones and refugee camps and stuff, and that's part of what radicalized him to join the Rebellion. That bg gives him good holonews cred, motivation, and a backstory that puts him in a position to have potentially been involved in military action in a very media-friendly sort of way (e.g. Last Alliance Herald) without actually having to have had the Clone Wars/Rise of the Empire be a recent thing. Either Celebrían is the queen of Alderaan like Breha, or we're making Alderaan a democracy and he's just their duly elected senator, but she's definitely some kind of Ruling Figure at home like a member of Alderaan Congress or something idk. (Or should she be the senator, who commutes to Coruscant, while he's the one who stays on Alderaan in between Mercy Missions, since he's the one in the "homely house" so to speak?)

Neither Arwen nor her brothers are likely going to serve as straight-up Leia analogs btw, because even the twins are more sensible and prudent than Leia, and we're going more for a Three Hunters And Company storyline (I think, in the story that definitely is not being written) than any sort of direct ANH/ESB/ROTJ sequence of events. But they basically serve the role that Leia did before she took over as senator, e.g. the children of the senator and queen? ish? who go around being an Optics Issue and lowkey pain in the Empire's ass while secretly moving information/supplies/etc around for the Rebellion, getting away with it because of Diplomatic Status.

Although the more I try to think of what to do with him, the more Gandalf seems to be falling into a sort of Kenobi/Yoda role. Which I'm pretty sure leaves Saruman as—a little too appropriately, yes I know—a Dooku/Tarkin combination. Oops?

TBB Tech Thoughts

I won’t bore you with the details of why I think he’s alive because it’s been rehashed everywhere for the past two weeks, but yeah I think there’s a decent chance he’s still alive. The real question is whether or not that's a good idea!

On a personal level I want him to come back because he is a major comfort character and I already miss him to death, just based on a sketchy death scene. Emotions go 0 to 100 on a daily basis about this but it hurts thinking about him alone out there, no burial and no brothers. I do think it's a cheap way of building “stakes” in a show that’s already destroyed the main characters’ homeland and familial ties, and if Omega were still captured with Tech alive, I don’t think the impact would’ve been lost. 

Now, do I want him back from a writing point?

yeeessss ? and no. Yes because his death felt shoddily put together and almost as if we’re supposed to see all the holes in it, and no because there’s one season left and with all the plot lines they have to tie up, it’s hard to see the second coming of Tech fitting in well to an 16/18 episode run. 

I don’t care about the whole “Star Wars needs to stop faking deaths” thing because obviously they’re going to fake deaths, this is fantasy. But, Tech dying and coming back would make it much more difficult for any of the other batches to die believably in this season, which I think is a very real possibility. And, sorry, but the character writing in TBB can vary wildly and I’m content to have Tech’s character remain where he is and not get messed up via s3 shenanigans. Is it shitty to kill off your one autistic character for shock value? Definitely. I detest that. But, here we are. 

It’s hard to tell what the tone of s3 is going to end up as, because the teaser trailer (not sure where to find one, they've all been taken down) shows a very dark future for the batch, but they usually only show the first few episodes, so we can’t know where this ends up going. If it keeps with the darkness and gloom then bringing Tech back might be too much tonal whiplash, but if they want a ROTJ ending for this series after their ESB, then totally bring him back oh my god. This is just Han in carbonite again. 

As my final thoughts, I will say I am very excited to be delusional about Tech coming back, because this is fandom and I want to have fun with the show that I love!!! Even if he doesn’t come back, this would’ve been an interesting few months of theorizing, and it just shows how energized the Tech section of the fandom is. We all love this nerdy guy and whether or not he’s breathing, that love will be shown via sobs on twitter or rambles here on Tumblr. 

Ramblings on The Empire Strikes Back: From a Certain Point of View - Vergence

Between Obi-wan asking Yoda to train Luke and Yoda agreeing, Yoda visits the cave that we see Luke visit later in ESB (and the cave we saw Yoda visit in season 6 of TCW).

Yoda receives another vision where he is haunted by four ghosts of his regrets (in this order):

Count Dooku turning to the dark side

The Clones, not the ones that marched on the temple, but the ones who marched to their deaths at Yoda’s order (this is what the vision is - not a statement on Yoda’s leadership abilities or the role of the Jedi in the war - just gonna cut that off right now)

Ahsoka leaving the order

Anakin turning to the dark side

The bookends, Anakin and Dooku, no surprise. They fell, Yoda felt responsible for not being able to steer them away from the dark side. So many people died because of this.

The clones, also understandable, that was a huge thing. Millions of lives taken.

But Ahsoka. That vision is different. Compared to the other events, this one is minuscule. So why is it here?

Turning away from the council that Yoda led with arrogance. Yoda’s failure to her bright light in the galaxy. Ego and overconfidence leading the way.

It has been decades since those events, and yet, we still see Yoda’s regret. His hurt and his pain for her are still there. He still has major feelings about the council’s actions and the repercussions she had to bear from them.

When he first sees her death in this cave in season 6, the wrong Jedi arc is a recent event. The worse that is still to come is still to come. It is understandable that he sees her at this time.

But decades later? The whole affair still haunts him. He hasn’t forgotten.

I find it interesting and poignant that, while all of these are personal to Master Yoda, Ahsoka leaving the order is still included. This is not an event that resulted in the death of millions, or the destruction of his home.

This is a personal hurt. A regret he has of what was done to a member of his family.

He loved her, the same way he loved every member of his family.

In the end, Yoda rises above these fears, and releases them.

Old fears are these, stubborn. But see them I must.

Then he turns and speaks directly to the cave.

My thanks you have.

With this, Yoda resolves he will train Luke.

(Regarding our SW discussion) OH. OH MY GOSH. YOU HAVE TO WATCH SEASON 2. Season 2 was even better than the first one, and the first one was great. It is SO good. I won't spoil anything for you, but it is so amazing. I cannot WAIT for you to watch it sometime! Whenever you get around to it, let me know what you think. Eeek!

I have more appreciation for Boba Fett than I used to. When I was little, and first got into Star Wars, I didn't like him for this reason: "He was mean to Han." (Because, you know- Harrison Ford, my beloved 💕.) I was literally like 10 at the time, lol. The scene where Han gets frozen in carbonite in ESB used to absolutely shatter me. I cried every time I saw it for like...a year. I was so obsessed, oh my gosh. And I still am.

You may or may not like The Book Of Boba Fett. He's changed a lot as a character from the original trilogy. He almost doesn't act like the same character anymore. He talks a lot, lol 😂. I won't say anything else about it- I'll let you watch it for yourself and we can talk about it later sometime.

Also, there is a reason my rambles I leave in your ask box are always a mile or more long. That is because I am SO good at written communication. Like, text messages and emails? I can write books and explain everything flawlessly. But I swear, I can't talk for the LIFE of me. If you and I were to have an IRL conversation face-to-face, you would find that I literally cannot speak. Not even exaggerating right now. For another AU that I will probably never write out.

Pre-ESB,

Luke, Han, and Chewie encoutering injured, confused, slightly amnesiac Vader. His helmet is cracked, his prosthetics are sparking, and his respirator is wheezing.

But on seeing Luke, Vader says "My baby! She knew it was a boy!" And he's trying to hug Luke, but he can't stand properly. Vader ends up sitting on the ground. He's trying to cradle Luke, calling him "baby" and repeating, "She said 'support the baby's head'. Must support his head."

Luke wants to say "what the kriff! You killed my father, prepare to die" but Han and Chewie are way more pragmatic/ practical/ willing to take advantage of this.

Han, "No, Luke, we can use this. Now you just stay in Vader's lap, hug him, and call him daddy, while we call High Command. "

When a medical team, sent by Alliance HC arrives, they try to separate Vader from Luke. But when Vader attempts to strangle the medics, Luke ends up calming Vader down.

Luke accompanies the medical team to keep Vader quiet. Because sedation doesn't seem to last as long as it should on Vader.

When he's awake, Vader continues to babble on at Luke. At some point in the ramblings, Vader says something that causes Luke to realize that Darth Vader was once Anakin Skywalker.

Day 169: Saturday June 18, 2022 - “Buffalo to Boston”

 A hop filled road led us through Upstate New York, and the capital of the Empire State where we found a great brewery called Fort Orange, where we learned the history of the Orange in the area, while enjoying a Costco-chicken-picnic in the middle of the bartender’s send off party. “Cheers!” We thought maybe this would be the brew-ha-highlight of the day, but oh no-  just down the road in Mass. Dad introduced me to the Treehouse - now thats a brewery. Only had time to stand in awe of the greatness of the place, before ordering 12 cans to go that we’d enjoy in our hotel outside Hudson MA that night.  “That beer tried to kill me” but I did really enjoy the good Old Man ESB.  Resetting outside Boston, I got the gift of reading the stories my parents had written about their recent ramble and remembering all those cool places they had been together earlier in the year as part of Wms birthday present that also include some good Dr. Seuss...   William could have cared less - he was on a tear through the hotel room, free from his car seat, and squealing to himself as he played with the AC unit on the wall, the office chair, his cars, and of course some “monkeys on the bed” - thinking a great travel day was in the bag and couldn’t possibly get better, I was proven wrong for a second time....When AC set William down on the bed to sleep, he crawled over and fell asleep on me very intentionally.  Thats a first and I was so happy, laying there enjoying it while my parents snored in unison in the next bed over from us.

A rambling establishment with a good set of handpumps. It was a fairly typical town pub but certainly met with my approval.

A little micropub that I have been to before. A very friendly establishment with a nice selection of beers on tap.

Cricketers (Pub 53)

A very nice Fullers establishment. The pint of ESB I had was well kept and went down very nicely. I was also pleased to see a huge range of previous Good Beer Guides on the bookshelf.

Unfortunately although it is time consuming, my best advice is to rewatch the original trilogy a lot. It's helped me pick up on the cadence of his speech, the way he reacts to certain things, his body language.

Ultimately the way I view and write Luke is super influenced by what movie/show I'm imagining my writing taking place. Luke evolves as a character throughout the trilogy which is ultimately what makes him so compelling. He's not one-note, parts of his character change and grow. ANH Luke and ROTJ Luke are, of course, the same person, but with different life experiences that change how he reacts to different scenarios.

There are some general constants I try to keep in mind when I think of him. A lot of people portray Luke as constantly in a good mood, and that's not necessarily true, as he's known to pout, whine, or ruminate about things just enough that it's endearing but not annoying (to me at least!). That being said, he is generally optimistic, gentle, and forward-thinking, especially when given some reassurance. He's confident, but not to the point of arrogance, and that's a thin line to walk. It works because he has lots of confidence about some things (his piloting ability, as an example) and less confidence about other things (his abilities with the Force around ESB era, as another example). He has "faults" that also double as "strengths"– an unwavering duty to his friends some people might call unreasonable, and the aforementioned confidence that occasionally walks the line of self-sacrifice.

I could probably go on and on about Luke's personality traits for pages and pages, which is hilarious, considering I generally only write smut and I know it might seem like a lot to do just to write explicit fanfiction. Ultimately, characters in fiction are up for interpretation, so you don't have to necessarily consider my opinion on Luke as correct, but you can use the same strategy of watching the OT and paying close attention to him to form your own opinions!

I can't necessarily tell you how exactly to write Luke, but I can tell you that from personal experience, your writing can totally benefit from rewatching even clips of the OT on youtube to pick up on his character! This probably wasn't exactly the answer you wanted anon, sorry if it's rambling! if you have a specific era of his personality you'd like to discuss more feel free to shoot me another ask! 1. luke skywalker 103- for the initiates 

dare i say the most iconic of all luke’s looks? he really came in swinging. the simplicity of the outfit really lets his natural beauty shine; the tunic says unassuming farmer boy but the hair says disney prince. i wanna touch it. the plunging neckline makes him look more shirtless than if he actually took his shirt off- i can’t tell if i’m repelled or turned on. but he looks like he’d be great at holding hands :) final rating: 10/10 absolutely iconic

what happened to the swoosh in his hair? we went from the most dashing look the 70s had to offer to......... what i actually picture when i think of 70s hair. i realize that luke probably didn’t have much of a wardrobe to choose from but the banana yellow isn’t doing him any favors. but he looks happy enough and i guess that’s what’s most important? final rating: 6/10 would take him to Target for his own clothes :/

similar in color to his dagobah outfit- maybe luke just really rocks the muddy greenish-gray? it’s not much of a fashion statement but sometimes less is more. while i do miss the biceps, i can’t resist a classy man and the sleeves at least give the illusion of classiness. his hair’s doing the swooshy thing again and it really pulls the look together for me :)  final rating: 8/10 hot but not too hot

luke’s out here serving us some emo looks and ngl i’m kinda here for it. the similarity to anakin’s costume design makes me think he developed a retro style between esb and rotj. i’m not mad; i just don’t think the leather vest or whatever it is necessary. but the wind in his hair makes him look very dashing, and the green lightsaber is nothing short of sexy final rating: 8.5/10 who’s that fella??? 👀

i.... i think this is the same basic outfit from jabba’s barge but without the leather? thank the lord. he really did decide to make a statement with the black shirt, black pants, knee-high black boots, and thicc black belt, but honestly the uniformity looks very sexy on him. epitome of class. again, you can tell luke has combed his hair recently; it’s lost its swoosh and it’s not my fave. BUT i’m obsessed with hand veins and gloves and he’s serving us both!!! sorry that he had to lose his hand but the glove makes it kinda worth it 

this look also marks luke’s character development from one hundred percent sub to a total switch. i dont make the rules :)
