Yuko Araki - IV
A note from Yuko Araki This might sound a little antithetical, but I am interested in making noise music that is free from unnecessary noise. I do realise how this sounds, but it is absolutely at the core of my new recording. I want to create maximum impact and dynamics in the music through using only the essential elements and materials. I am a huge fan of noise music, and in many cases I enjoy the excessive nature of that music. For my own work though I am interested in reducing this, boiling it down, to the very critical parts that can allow the music to profoundly affect those who choose to listen to it. I want to use what I have at my disposal with intent and with force. I also wanted to deepen my connection to, and place in, this music. To this end I have started to explore how it is I fit into the work. I explored how is my body part of this project beyond being a gestural interface between the various machines I use to make it. I’ve started to think about voice a lot and this has come into the process of the recording. I’m not so much interested in the way voice can speak to stories or singing for that matter. I’m more interested in how voice might haunt the music. I invited another artist, Taichi Nagura from the band Endon, to contribute some voice to this album too. He is featured on Sloshing and his voice absolutely captures this quality I am interested in exploring. It’s as if he is trapped in that piece, fight for and against the other materials in the sound. This tension captures, for me at least, the relationships I think are so powerful about making, and also listening to music.  Design by T.Pakioufakis

Because Redbubble has insane shipping costs, I’m moving shops!
I started my online shop yesterday, and while that is awesome, Redbubble has some insane shipping costs - for BUTTONS. You pay like twice or maybe thrice the price of the actual product, which is stupid. So I’ve decided to make buttons myself and sell them on ETSY.
HOWEVER
Button making machines are expensive af! I’ve found an affordable one though, since I really want to make buttons myself. The delivery time is 1-2 weeks, so I can’t make buttons straight away. But to see if it is actually worth getting this thing (it’s like 165 euros), I first want to check if anyone is even INTERESTED in BUYING my buttons!
Potential prices (these are not fixed):
Button itself: 2.00 - 3.00 Euros (2.40 - 3.60 USD) - plus maybe extra (taxes, Etsy regulations etc.)
Shipping: 1.50 - 2.00 Euros (1.80 - 2.40 USD) - depending on the country
I will ship these myself, via the mail, so I’m basing the shipping costs off of the prices that the Dutch Mail provides for international shipping. Obviously it’ll be cheaper for Dutch customers.
I’ve made a Google Form to check how many people would be interested!
(Sorry for potential German, my Google account is in German and I don’t know how to change it on the form)
Please take about 5 minutes to fill this in, so I can see if all of this is worth it. .
What can you expect in my future Etsy store?
Buttons
Stickers
Hopefully Prints
Maybe more, who knows
Mostly of my muses and some fan merch for my ongoing story, The Endon Project. Currently I’m making pride themed buttons like the one below, but I will also make more meme related ones!

Here I go with some ship asks! (Sorry in advance for some of these)
Lief x Jasmine (obviously)
Lief x Dain
Jared x Endon
Barda x Lindal
Glock x Neridah
Filli x Kree
Tira x Reece
Doran x Any dragon
Glus x The Hive (???)
Sharn x Prandine
Shadow Lord x Lief
Gorl x Nobody because he ain't got nobody
aklsjdf sorry for taking so long life got hectic all of a sudden
anyway ship bingo (based on this post) under the cut:
Tumblr media
literally my first otp i ever shipped. i love the slowburn and development of their relationship both romantically and non-romantically.
Tumblr media
if it was human dain au then,,, maybe. but idk. i guess it was one of my first reading experiences of a betrayal that little me has always harboured a dislike for dain, so it's hard to ship him with lief for me. i suppose i've also never saw them interact together and thought "what if...?"
Tumblr media
so i do love them very much. im very soft for their relationship, platonically or romantically. i think it can work as like a crush when you're young, but as they get older it does get Awkward when you ship lief x jasmine
Tumblr media
T H E M
words cannot express how much i love these two
Tumblr media
hahaha okay listen. i dont see how they could work in any shape or form but also im loving the image of them just annoying the hell out of each other. mAyBe they could partner up and annoy people together perhaps but idk.
Tumblr media
askdjfAKDH okay putting aside that these are animals of different species, i see them as part of a family so no way can i see any romance alksdfhj im down for platonic chaos but that’s about it
Tumblr media
reece seems too old and too much of an abuser for this to even sit right with me alksdjfh
Tumblr media
romantically, hard no. but i am very soft for doran’s connection and love and dedication with the dragons and it’s a mood
Tumblr media
lmaooo how’d you come up with this one?? anyway hard pass on this one but also they are very interesting and i am sorta intrigued to see how they would interact, especially as gem guardians who aren’t really evil, just vibing. in saying that, theyre not going to cope in the other’s environment i think
Tumblr media
noooo get it out of here alksjdf although now im thinking about sharn drop-kicking prandine into superhell and that’s an entertaining thought
Tumblr media
okay im usually soft for the enemies to lovers trope but this doesn’t fit that lmao the shadow lord is an evil malevolent consciousness harbouring vengeance. lief doesn’t deserve that. on a more blunt technical note, they dont have the kind of tension to make it work askjldfh. i mean it’s tense when they interact, but it’s like High Anxiety not an oooooh imma duel you and then accidentally let you get away so we can fight again
Tumblr media
aALKSDJFJLMAO honestly i looked at this with a blank stare. i didnt know what to circle, so was just going with conflicted. and then “it’s cute but missing that special something” was just a joke because it’s like,,, only part of a ship. and then digging the vibes of he’s got nobody with him but he’s also got no body with him. and then i did that self deprecating laugh and was like yeah i can project onto being alone asdfKAJHDF

(Edward Bunker) per aderire mandare mail a [email protected] PRIME FIRME: Moni Ovadia – Scrittore e Attore / Wu Ming – Scrittori / Caparezza – Cantante/ Ivan – Poeta e Artista / Andrea Cegna – Giornalista / Corrado Gemini – Produttore Ctrl / Massimo Carlotto – scrittore / Sandrone Dazieri – scrittore / Tito Faraci – Fumettista e Scrittore / Frode – Artista / Davide Atomo Tinelli – Artista / Andrea Marrapodi Kiv – Artista / Walter Contipelli Orticanoodles – Artista /Francesco Ferreri – Chekos’art – Artista / Mr.Wany – Artista / Pao – Artista / Endone Volks Writerz – Artista / Mister Caos – Artista / Vandalo – writer / Felipe Cardeña & Felipe Cardeña Crew – Artisti / Maurizio Tarducci EricsOne – Graffiti Artist / Mattia Bonora – calligrafo / Jacopo Ceccarelli 2501 – artista / Roberta Introvaia – artista, pittrice / Paolo Cerruto – poeta /Collettivo Tempi diVersi / Alessandro Augelli – Responsabile Politiche Giovanili Cooperativa Il Calabrone – Brescia / Davide Casavola DPA – Artista Urbano e Produttore / Stefano Bonora – Artista Illustratore / Marco Teatro” – Artista Pittore Scenografo Decoratore / Giovanni Candida (WallsOfMilano) – Fotografo / Simone Pallotta – Critico e Curatore / Piger – Artista / Rancy – Artista / Morkone – Artista / Ratzo – Artsita / Norberto – Artista / Mate – Artista / Soviet – Artista / Ctrl Project – Associazione Culturale / Artkademy – Associazione Culturale / Marco Tangocci – Scrittore / Andrea Candrian Saten – Sindacalista / ZAM – Spazio Sociale Occupato / A Mi Manera – serigrafia / Associazione 167b Street – Lecce / Giovanni Chiantera Awer – artista / Solid Vibes Raggae Crew – Produttori e Dj / Golden Bass Sound System – musicisti e produttori / Alessandro Bertoldi – Produttore / Sonika – Etichetta Discografica / Mara Di Noia – Scrittrice / Giulia Buonarrivo – organizzatrice / Giorgio Andrea Giannone – Architetto / Giacomo Spazio – Artista / Jet4 – Writer / Claudio Agostoni – giornalista Radio Popolare / Dario Cossutta – politico e imprenditore / Francesco Cellamaro El Crespo – Graffiti Artist / Und1c1 – artiere / Christian Gangitano – Curatore Indipendente /Giuliano Santoro – Giornalista/Alberto Guidetti – Musicista/Alberto Cazzola – Musicista/Enrico Roberto – Musicista/Lodo Guenzi – Musicista/Francesco Draicchio – Musicista/Fondazione Alfonso Gatto / Filippo Trotta – scrittore e produttore

Endodrome is the first virtual reality artwork by pioneering artist Dominique Gonzalez-Foerster. Officially invited to the main exhibition of the 58th International Art Exhibition of La Biennale di Venezia “May You Live in Interesting Times” curated by Ralph Rugoff, this VR environment is on view at the Arsenale from May 11 to November 24, 2019. This year’s Biennale features numerous artworks made using digital technologies, demonstrating growing recognition of works made using VR, AR, AI and other digital mediums. The artwork title is derived from the Greek word endon, meaning ‘internal’, and dromos, meaning ‘running, race track’, Endodrome continues Gonzalez-Foerster’s exploration of notions of space, alternative states of consciousness, and interiority. Presented in a staged environment, Endodrome can be experience by up to five people at once, with its theatrical setting suggesting the experience of a séance, incorporating sound, light, and projections of the visions that viewers experience via the VR headsets. The eight-minute experience begins by immersing viewers in a hypnotic, monochrome environment, before moving into an abstract visual space, in which bright color fields shift in response to the gaze and breath. The artwork draws on the artist’s experience of sound-induced cognitive trance with musician and author Corine Sombrun, who collaborated with the artist to create an accompanying soundscape. hands so bloody
Fandom: Deltora Quest Summary: Unbeknownst to its intended victims, the Shadow Lord begins the Conversion Project. Characters: Barda, Jasmine, Lief, mentions of others. Notes: This is for @anniebogoni who requested Barda and Jasmine between series 1 and 2. Thanks for the prompt! AO3 Content Warning: A suicide that is referenced in The Isle of Illusion makes an appearance here.
Weak sunlight cast the palace in a watery, washed-out glow. Barda squinted through the light to peer at the massive structure before him. It had been two months since he had called it home again, and yet it felt so terribly strange to walk up the wide steps.
He looked back at his companion, trailing just behind him. Without an official title or position, and with Lief and Doom almost always preoccupied, Jasmine would occasionally shadow Barda on his rounds. He did not discourage this habit, for otherwise she spent her time alone, and besides, she was the best kind of company.
“There is a place for you in the palace guards, should you wish it,” Barda had told her the week before, doing his best to keep his voice unaffected. “You would not need to apply.”
Jasmine had stared blankly ahead. Months earlier, he would have thought that the girl’s face was unreadable like this. But he could see the thought behind her sharp eyes, and the way her lips pulled downwards when she concentrated.
“Thank you,” she had said awkwardly. “But I would not want it.”
He had meant his words, but so had she, and so Barda had never offered again.
“Are you finished, already?” Jasmine asked, pulling him from the memory.
“My shift has ended, but I wish to look in on how the meetings are going. Mobley has only been my deputy for a few weeks, and I have left him in charge of guarding them.”
Jasmine grimaced. "I do not understand why all those people crowd into that room just for a chance to speak to Lief or Sharn. They all want food and money. As if Lief would not give it to them if he had any to give at all!”
“It is better that he listens to them say the same things, than ignore them and fall back into the old ways,” he said darkly, as if Jasmine’s thoughts had not crossed his own mind.
They reached the top of the stairs and Kree took flight from Jasmine’s shoulder, choosing the open air rather than the confines of the palace. Barda did not miss the wistful look that Jasmine followed him with.
The huge doors were splayed open in what was meant to be a sign of welcome. Barda had always thought they made the great hall appear cavernous, but he did not feel the need to say so. The line to speak to the king and his mother nearly spilled out of the entrance.
A young woman stood just outside of the doors. She was awfully thin, and the rough brown dress she wore did little to shield her from the cool morning air. She trembled and swayed as she gazed up at the massive palace, and Barda softened, despite himself. He had learned in his years as a beggar that looking upon the palace with hate and fear had been a ritual etched into the bones of the citizens of Del for generations. As he and Jasmine drew closer, he realized the woman was trembling. He recalled how he had shaken, when he fled the palace the night of the Shadowlord’s invasion. How he had stumbled away from the monstrous structure, gasping to catch hold of his panicked breath, clutching his sword with a sweat-slicked hand. But that had been so long ago, and there was no evil left to drive from inside the palace walls.
“You need not fear it any longer,” he said gently. The woman flinched, and turned to him, staring up with wide blue eyes framed by brown curls. A flash of recognition passed over her face; he and Jasmine had become as recognizable as Lief. Her eyes looked far away, but she gave him a brief smile, and darted away into the hall.
They went in after her, but the woman had already been swallowed by the crowd. Barda could see Lief and Sharn from where he stood. Lief was listening intently to a man surrounded by three children who clutched their father’s patched coat and stared at the king with undisguised awe. Lief had grown taller and broader during their journey, but he had only just turned seventeen. His face was still very much that of a boy.
Suddenly, Jasmine stiffened beside Barda, and placed a hand on his arm. Something was wrong, he realized. Jasmine’s instincts had never failed them before.
Screams suddenly rose like a symphony, starting near where they stood, and spreading through the crowd. Swifter than lightning, Barda and Jasmine swung around, pulling their weapons from their sheaths. Filli wailed from under Jasmine’s scarf, his thin voice joining the others.
“Get out of the way!” Barda boomed, but the people before him did not need to be told. The crowd parted as a figure barrelled through. It was the woman he had only just seen, but she had shed all of her fear. She was shockingly fast, and clenched a wicked knife in her hands. Mobley and Dale were at Lief and Sharn’s sides, but they could not see the source that was causing such panic. Lief had drawn his own sword and was searching for the culprit in vain, for she was shielded by the crowd.
“Son of Adin! Son of Endon!” The woman shrieked; a terrible cry of hate and rage. “Little Lief, come to me! We must away together, you and I! Do you not tire of playing a king? Does the game not grow old? I know a game that is much more fun!”
Jasmine dodged through the people, sweeping nimbly through the crowd as she had once darted between the trees in the Forests of Silence. Barda followed a little behind, keeping his eyes carefully placed on Jasmine’s back. After what seemed like an eternity, she reached the woman and hooked her foot underneath her legs, causing her to stagger and fall to the floor. Jasmine had the flat of her dagger pressed against the woman’s heaving throat when Barda arrived. He pressed his mighty hands against the woman’s slim shoulders, pinning her to the cold stone floor. She wailed and spat in his face.
“Do that again, and die,” Jasmine hissed. The woman turned her savage eyes to the girl and bared her teeth.
Barda used the woman’s distraction and tried to pull the knife from her hand. Her grip was of iron, and her fingers were white-knuckled. She flailed her free hand, catching Jasmine hard on her cheek, and grasped at the knife with both hands. Barda’s own hand slid down the hilt, and the blade bit into his palm. He gritted his teeth and tried to pry her fingers from the weapon, but the woman was relentless. Jasmine pulled her own knife away to give him room.
“No, no, no, no,” the woman sobbed hysterically. Blood ringed her arms in delicate trails; she had cut her own hands on the blade. It streamed onto Barda’s hand, and his fingers skidded down her arm for just a moment. It was all she needed. As her sobs turned to wordless screams, she raised the blade high and plunged it into her own heart. Her eyes rolled and her lips opened and closed like a fish out water, as she laboured toward the death she had chosen. Barda did not look away as her blood pooled under his legs. Finally she was still, and her empty eyes stared dully at the high ceiling.
Jasmine did not hesitate before pulling the knife from the dead woman’s ruined hands, as if she feared someone might pick it up and finish what had been started. She knelt beside him, and stared at the body with eyes of unflinching stone.
Barda finally raised his head. The silence in the room was deafening. Many of the people had fled the palace in the scuffle, but still more were staring at the body on the floor. His face was wet with the woman’s saliva and blood. He reached a hand out to Jasmine and together they staggered to their feet.
“We will reconvene tomorrow,” Lief’s voiced echoed through the massive room. One by one, the remaining people turned from the body to face their king. “I ask you to return to your homes for your own safety. Please.”
Slowly, as if recovering from an enchantment, they found their voices. Whispers and murmurs rose high, but they did as they were told, trickling from the palace achingly slow. Many eyes lingered on the body, and the two blood-splattered people that stood beside it, but Barda and Jasmine stared them all down.
“Get the king away,” Barda bellowed at Mobley and Dale when the crowd had finally left. “And find Doom.”
The guards nodded and followed Sharn as she steered Lief out of the hall, ignoring his protests and the desperate looks he shot back at his friends. A wave of exhaustion hit Barda like a blow.
“They failed him,” Jasmine said fiercely, watching the guards go. “They are supposed to protect Lief, are they not?”
“They did not leave his side, and he is alive,” Barda said firmly. “For now, that is enough.”
“And so protecting Lief falls to us?” Jasmine snapped. She let the dead woman’s knife clatter to the floor, and sheathed her own.
“Just as it has before. You knew that,” Barda said, just as angrily. “That, at least, has not changed.”
Still, he could not help but admit to himself that she was half-right. Had we not been here…
Jasmine’s brow was smeared with the woman’s blood, but her own trickled from the cut on her cheek left by desperate fingernails.
“You should bandage that,” he said gruffly.
She shrugged. “Yours is worse.”
Barda looked down. The battle-heat was wearing away and the nasty gash on his palm was beginning to throb. It would need to be sewn.
He looked at the dead woman, a thousand questions swirling in his mind.
“No one will claim her now,” was all he said aloud. “If she had any family, they will not come forward. Not when the Lief’s rule is so new. No one will want that kind of mark.”
Jasmine crouched by the body. She slipped her hands into the bloodstained pockets of the woman’s dress, and ran her hands along the seams. Barda looked away.
“She has nothing,” Jasmine said finally. “Nothing at all.”
Barda looked at the woman’s spindly wrists and hollow cheeks. Jasmine was not wrong. He cursed harshly.
Jasmine rose to her feet, pressing a ginger finger to her cut. Despite her anger with the guards, she appeared satisfied at least with the conclusion. But Barda’s dread only increased the longer he stared at the body.
It has only been two months, he thought grimly. This is not a good omen.
As the woman’s blood began to tighten against his skin where it dried, Barda could not help but think that something much worse was still to come.
-----------------------------
I wanted to write something pre-series 2 before things started to go poorly with Lief and Jasmine, and Lief and the people. I imagine there was tension even before it became apparent that there were lies and secrets. I think it’s interesting how the attempted assassination attempts via the Conversion Project were really the catalyst for Lief very nearly losing the people’s faith. The Enemy is sly, indeed…

In January 2019, Scottish artists Geraldine Heaney and Ellie Griffiths travelled to Japan to explore inclusive music approaches. Geraldine co-runs KOR! Records, that create music projects for young people with additional support needs and releases their output. Ellie makes sensory performances for and with young people with complex needs, in which live music is a key component. The trip was funded by Creative Scotland and supported by Independent Arts Projects.

This research aimed to open up new, accessible ways of making and experiencing live music. Both artists were keen to embrace non-normative music cultures and practices that have the potential to widen out who is at the centre of the work. Although working in different ways, both artists are passionate about the power of music to create spaces where people can be listened to and express themselves authentically.
Japan is the a global centre for experimental and noise music, making it an ideal setting for this research. Referred to broadly as ‘Japanoise’, there’s a rich history of music here that has developed an expansive tonal palette to include abrasive textures, feedback, object noises, field recordings and even silence. Artists working in this way such as Boredoms, C.C.C.C. and Hijokaidan have gained huge cult success in the last few decades and strong international followings.
Here the artists talk about their time in Japan…
EG: On this trip, I wanted to open my ears. Since being a teenager I have had fairly set music taste that is largely restricted to rootsy, acoustic music. I’m slightly sound sensitive so tend to seek out low intensity listening experiences. In my work with young people who have profound autism, I have noticed a strong interest in object noises and have made the connection before between this and the work of Japanese artists such as Rie Nakajima. I notice many young people I work with seek really high intensity sound experiences. One parent told me how her son likes to go home after school, shut the curtains, take his clothes off, turn the lights out and listen to thrash metal music full blast. In terms of access, this is never what is imagined when making work for autistic audiences. This makes me keen to expand my musical horizons so I can make work that is engaging for a wider variety of people and preferences.
GH: We visited a range of venues: Small scale live houses with incredible lighting rigs, longstanding venues, repurposed Japanese houses, tiny cafes and the 100-year-old Guggenheim House that has become an established music venue, community hub and home. We attended a range of gigs: Noise, Punk, Experimental Improvisation, Melodic composition, Classical guitar and live music for children. We heard stories of: connections to Scotland, community projects, plans for adventure, ideas for establishing community, traditional tales, musical explorations, cultural differences and human histories. There’s so much to process and so many experiences that I know will take a lot longer to understand the full impact on my work and my thinking.
EG: A highlight for me was going to a noise gig by Endon, and also seeing experimental musician PHEW at Superdeluxe (the venue Café Oto in London was inspired by). Both are performances I wouldn’t have usually chosen to go to, but I found both utterly compelling. The vibration through the floor, the beat that feels stronger than your heartbeat at times, the mesmeric quality of having your whole body absorbed in sound. These were the sort of gigs you would never get my audiences at, and yet they were so sensory! I liked how having the focus of listening made us more sensitive to sounds that appeared in our everyday experiences. Japan is a noisy place in many parts. It was a great way to absorb this new culture, and fed into our thinking about active listening.
Tumblr media
GH: Improvisation was a theme in our trip. We saw a lot of brilliant improvised music. This can be  a naturally inclusive approach without the structures or rules of more classical or prescribed forms of music.  (more about this and meeting the inclusive improvisation collective Otoasobi Project in the next blog). We also improvised our journey around Japan. We took risks on things we didn’t know much about, took advice from locals and made changes to our plans to respond to what was happening. We missed trains and had to find new directions to go in. There’s a lot more to think about in terms or sound, noise, listening, inclusion, disability and connection.

I actually drew Lutezk’s spaceship and I’m very happy with how it turned out! The name is basically the ship’s designation/class/serial number, but it needs an actual name still .
